Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul Trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilizaion. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an Automatic Truck Control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Company, in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting for truck use a proven automated control system previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles.

"Classic engineering economics provides the mining engineer with a fundamental approach to choosing between capital spending alternatives. This approach has been heavily used over the years and is an accepted technique for most investment decisions. There is a shortcoming that I have run into over the 15 year period when I worked in business planning roles. The classic time value of money approaches such as Net Present Value, Return on Investment, and Internal Rate of Return provide good estimates, but the input assumptions may fall short of describing the real material differences required by these analysis techniques. If the cost benefit analysis is defined solely on the improvement of the item being replaced or improved, the true profitability of the decision may be overestimated. Productivity improvement based capital projects can yield more accurate forecasts when conducted in concert with a “bottleneck analysis”. INTRODUCTION A review of the Theory of Constraints, (Goldratt, Cox, 1984) Lean, (Womack, 2003) (Rattner, 2006) and Six Sigma (Cryger, DeFeo 2015) lead us to recognize that these process improvement methodologies are oriented to the manufacturing process. These systems generally involve a factory that the material moves through on the way to becoming a final product. The mining challenge has many similarities to manufacturing once the ore has been won and made ready for processing. Before that point, however, the process is somewhat inverted while the ore is being won. Instead of the material moving through the factory, the factory is moving through the material. The Theory of Constraints (TOC) was used in an underground context by Baafi, Cai and Porter at 2015 APCOM, but even this groups’ analysis did not carry the concept from mining to shipping of the final product. There can be spatially distributed data that can affect the mining throughput constraints, some of which can be determined from exploration results. Identifying constraints can lead us to mapping productivity bottlenecks on future mining. Knowing this may improve decision making by eliminating one of Jim Fishbein’s three deadly sins of strategic planning: incomplete planning. When evaluating capital investment alternatives you should evaluate the impact of any proposed improvements on the entire operation. At the core of any mining system is the materials handling system. This can be typically expressed as the system that handles the raw material from the “face” through processing and then handling the finished product as well as the waste material. A “Bottleneck Analysis” is an investigation into the factors limiting a material handling system’s productivity (Goldratt, Cox, 1984). Mining material handling systems are usually composed of several linked components such as draglines, shovels, loaders, hydraulic excavators, continuous miners, longwalls, highwall miners, bucket wheel excavators, LHDs, feeders, conveyor belts, stockpiles, crushers, processing plants with various circuits, and waste handling systems. Each of the aforementioned components has a slightly different throughput capacity. When these are linked in series, the one with the lowest throughput capacity limits all of the others, creating the bottleneck for the system. Every material handling system has a bottleneck. In the mining environment, a subtle, but very significant phenomenon may also occur. The bottleneck may change as a result of a change in the raw feed qualities, face recession, overburden depth, digability, learning curve, and many others factors which may be derived from the drillhole data. These parameters often change as a function of the location in the reserve base, and may also vary with time."

"The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

This paper is a brief review of the recent history, and the present status of, of the program designed to develop practical new processes for producing pipeline quality gas from coal. Clean synthetic pipeline-quality gas from coal became a major objective during 1971. Agreement was reached with the American Gas Association, Inc., to cosponsor a $120 million, 4-year program to be funded $80 million by Government and $40 million by American Gas Association. The program was first announced by President Nixon in his Energy Message on June 4, 1971, and a portion of the additional funds needed for the program was approved by the Congress in the December 1971 supplemental budget action. A natural gas shortage has developed in the United States and every indication is that it will worsen. Many transmission and distribution companies have already been forced to curtail sales because of the shortage. Large sums are being committed to systems needed to bring liquefied natural gas from abroad and to plants to manufacture synthetic natural gas from petroleum--also largely imported. On the other hand, there is sufficient domestic coal to supply all of the needed gas through the next century. This accelerated program is designed to provide processes for making gas from coal at costs, including security costs, below the imported alternates. As outlined in the President's Energy Message, OCR and A.G.A. have accelerated the coal gasification program to make it possible to construct and operate a "demonstration plant" (semicommercial size) after 1975. Several processes, in various stages of development as will be described later, are being supported. Concurrently, the overall program will be constantly monitored and evaluated with the assistance of an independent, unbiased contractor. C F Braun of Alhambra, California, was selected for this task and has been actively engaged in it for the last several months. A coal-fired fluidized bed combustion (FBC) system will be installed at the Owatonna Tool Company, Owatonna, Minnesota. Two FBC combustors will burn solid fuels: coal, petroleum coke, and wood and paper wastes. Crushed dolomitic limestone will be used to control sulfur emissions to EPA limits. The combustors will supply indirectly heated hot air and hot water for paint drying operations, washing processes, and space heating. The program is sponsored by the United States Department of Energy and the Owatonna Tool Company, and is one of five programs designed to demonstrate industrial applications of coal-fired fluidized bed equipment. The paper will describe the combustion system and the results of development tests with dolomitic limestone for sulfur emission control.

A hydrocyclone is a piece of equipment commonly used as a classifier in mill circuit operations. Traditionally, hydrocyclone performance is characterized by the classification efficiency parameter, such as cut size (d50c), sharpness of separation () and bypass (Rf ). A plethora of endeavors have already been made to develop parametric models to determine hydrocyclone performance that correlate design and process variables. In contrast to those studies, we made an attempt to develop an approach to derive required design parameters purely from hydrodynamic principles that provides a platform to optimize the operation of a hydrocyclone for a given application. In this selection methodology, we calculated the differential pressure at the air core, as well as the tangential velocity at the boundary of the air core from the vortex principle in a confined geometry at different operating regimes. A series of experiments were conducted using Weir’s Cavex® hydrocylone where process variables—such as solids concentration and feed flowrates—were experimentally studied to determine the key classification parameters. For the validation of the current approach we used the same process variables to derive design parameters and compared them with the existing design. The current approach can provide insights towards the selection of design parameters and can be useful for mining industry professionals to optimize different operating parameters of hydrocyclones to achieve the best performance.

In this paper, the problems which occurred on introduction of dense medium cyclone coal washing in Australia are reviewed together with the subsequent measures taken to obtain a satisfactory magnetite. Specification and testing of magnetite for exploration, quality control and in-plant check purposes is discussed. The disposition of Australian magnetite deposits in relation to the main coal producing areas is examined, and comments are made on the economics of mining, milling and beneficiating magnetite for coal preparation uses alone. Future trends in the Australian Coal Industry are predicted, and the need for a planned approach for the future is demons traced.

The precise definition of an ultimate or economic pit has, over the years, received much attention in the literature on the subject of mine planning. Unfortunately, relatively little has been published in the area of pit sequencing and scheduling--an aspect which is typically of much greater economic significance both during the life of a mining operation, as well as in the evaluation of an exploration project. This paper discusses an overall mine planning methodology with emphasis on the design of an optimal sequence of pit expansions or phases. Although the concepts given are not new, it is hoped that some practical suggestions will be made. The paper will also describe graphical techniques which have been found useful in comparing the merits and impacts of alternate planning strategies and production schedules.

Reclamation of surface mined lands has two basic objectives: (1) the elimination or abatement of undesirable environmental conditions, and (2) the restoration of mined land to its former or more productive uses. This paper addresses some of the planning concepts and site factors that influence the selection of suitable land uses for surface mined lands. Three planning concepts included in the discussion are: (1) mine land planning, (2) comprehensive land use planning, and (3) environmental site planning. The site factors that will influence the selection of an appropriate land use have been grouped into three categories: (1) legal, (2) geographic, and (3) natural. The natural factors are further subdivided into three groupings: geomorphology, soils, and climate.

Zero emission coal plants capture their own CO2 emissions. Since they have no smoke stack, they emit no pollutants to the air. Zero emission plants circulate a gas stream, to which fresh fuel is added and from which spent fuel and impurities are removed as solids or liquids. Coal is gasified via hydrogenation, steam reforming or CO2 gasification (Boudouard reaction). The gas is oxidized in a fuel cell and the resultant water and CO2 are partially removed before returning the remaining gas to the gasifier. The high conversion efficiency of zero emission power plants, which exceeds 70% even in realistic designs, stems from combining fuel cells with careful heat management. The paper generalizes the concepts and outlines the thermodynamic basis of zero emission power plants.

The paper deals with the experimental application of a pilot flotation column to baryte and fluorspar ores. The column has been installed in parallel with the cleaning stages of two different industrial flotation plants where the above ores are processed using conventional cells with mechanical impellers. The effect of several parameters, including froth height, wash water additions, pulp feedrate and air supply rate, has been investigated. It has been shown that by finely tuning the above parameters good flotation performances can be achieved. The experimental results demonstrate the greater versatility of the column flotation and its superior separation efficiency, especially for the fine particle size fractions, over conventional cells.

The occurrence of borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo is well documented by McAnulty and Hoffer (1) and Lefond and Barker (2). Further investigation indicates the presence of priceite and meyerhofferite in addition to the howlite (1) and colemanite (2). Analcime occurs in addition to the clinoptilolite and phillipsite (2). The Mesa del Alamo area is about 200 !a south of Tucson, Arizona, and 13 km southeast of Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico, just south of the unpaved road to Cucurpe (Figure 1). The geology and mineralogy of northcentral Sonora is known only on a regional basis except for small areas mapped in detail during copper exploration. The study area is within the Basin and Range province of North America from which borates and zeolites are now produced in California. The borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo occur in geological environments similar to those of the Mojave and Death Valley regions of California (3, 4). Thus, a detailed exploration pro- gram in the Magdalena area could result in the discovery of economic borate and/or zeolite deposits.

Linear programming on desktop computers is commonly used to optimize coal blending proportions. The objective function is usually the cost of the blend. The constraints consist of materials and heat balances as expressed as linear functions of the blend. This is illustrated in Example 1. Inclusion of a sulfur compliance constraint in more complex because the maximum permitted sulfur percentage is not a pre-specified constant. Rather, it is a function of the calorific power of the blend itself. The current limit of 1.2 pounds of sulfur dioxide per million Btu may be expressed as: [Sulfur Max%= 0.6 . Hl10,OOO with H in Btu/lb.] A proper constraint equation may be formed by defining for each coal a function that is the difference between the actual sulfur percentage and the maximum sulfur percentage. This may be regarded us an excess sulfur percentage. For Coal A of Example 1. this would be: [ Sulfur Excess%=0.5-0.6 13,000/10,000=-0.28] This value would be used as the coefficient of the weight proportions of this coal in the blend. The complete constraint equation would then be the sum of such terms for each coal set less than or equal to zero. This is illustrated in Example II. [ ]

INTRODUCTION High in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, some 50 airline miles (80 km) northeast of Fresno, and near the John Muir Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park, a large underground hydroelectric project is under construction. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Company's 1,125 MW Helms Pumped Storage Project exhibits a number of impressive statistics, unusual features, and other characteristics of interest to the tunneling or power plant designer and construction contractor. The most significant underground facilities include almost 20,000 ft (6,096 m) of 27-ft (8.2 m) diam concrete-lined pressure tunnel; 3,700 ft (1,128 m) of access tunnel; 1,600 ft (488 m) of steel-lined high-pressure conduit, 2 major underground chambers more than 1,000 ft (305 m) below ground; 3 deep vertical shafts, and one steep inclined shaft. Maximum static pressures within the conduits range from 200 ft (61 m) to 1,744 ft (532 m), with hydraulic transients that increase pressure to 2,500 ft (762 m). The purpose of these underground works is to provide 475,000 hp (354,350 KW) of water power to each of the 3 reversible pump-turbines, each connected to a 375 MW generator motor. The units, rated at 1,744 ft (532 m) maximum static head, are among the world's front-runners, considering the size-head combination. The Helms Project develops the existing power drop between two of PG&E's reservoirs, Courtright Lake and Lake Wishon. These reservoirs are retained by two concrete-faced rockfill dams completed in 1958, each storing approximately 125,000 acre ft (154 x 106 m3) of water. A numerical analysis and an experiment were done on groundwater flow past a bore hole with a cylindrical obstacle at its center. Flow around the obstacle in the bore hole was studied in detail. Two dimensional governing equations to simulate this flow were written for the hydraulic head and seepage velocity in a porous medium and for the vorticity, stream function, and velocity in the bore hole. These equations were non-dimensionalized and solved by using the alternating direction implicit and successive-over-relaxation finite difference methods. Flow visualization experiments and velocity measurements in the bore hole were done with a two dimensional model composed of a porous medium. The numerical analysis procedures were validated by a comparison of numerical and experimental results. Effects of the Reynolds number and obstacle size on flow in the bore hole are clearly shown in the velocity and streamline profiles. The quantitative relation between the seepage velocity in the porous medium and the velocity of flow around the obstacle in the bore hole also were estimated.

In surface mining for coal, common practice for the disposal of preparation plant refuse is to bury it. As with surface refuse piles, these buried wastes can ignite and can also lead to ground and surface water pollution. Steps to ameliorate these problems have been devised over the years. C and K Coal Company, of Clarion, Pa., the largest Pennsylvania surface mining company, has incorporated all of these steps and added of few, of their own in their latest disposal practice. In addition to layering and compacting, C and K practices selective placement and dilution to minimize longterm problems.

Many industries, including mining, are experiencing an increase in the use of robotic and other artificial intelligence (AI) systems to improve efficiency, productivity and precision. For example, a 2023 survey showed that mining industry executives wanted to integrate more autonomous equipment to improve productivity and alleviate workforce shortages (Haas, 2024). This feedback was coupled with an increased appetite to advance the types and uses of automation and AI in the workplace. However, there is also an increasing concern about the ways that robotic applications may unintentionally affect worker safety. Humanmachine interaction poses potential risks, especially when industrial robots operate near workers in specific environments (such as drilling, handling and transporting materials, equipment inspection and lifting heavy loads). Research has explored the unintended consequences of introducing new technologies or processes in the workplace to include incidents such as being struck by equipment and challenges around data privacy (Lööw et al., 2019; Khurram et al., 2025; Haas and DuCarme, 2015; Almeaibed et al., 2021; Zio and Miqueles, 2024). More recently, the use of digital twin technologies and simulations (hereafter referred to as digital twin systems) has been boasted as a tool that can help prevent unintended consequences around worker safety by identifying and mitigating risks before a worker completes a task in tandem with a robot or other new technology. Digital twin systems produce a virtual replica of a physical environment or process (Almeaibed et al., 2021; Zio and Miqueles, 2024; Saes, 2024). To this end, this article explores the potential role of digital twin systems in enhancing safety within mining and other similar environments. It will primarily focus on environments where robots and human workers may interact, although digital twin systems can be useful with other technology applications. First, we define digital twins and digital simulation as components of a system. Then, we highlight possible applications of digital twin systems in mining to replicate real-world processes, followed by potential benefits of their use and where more research may be needed.
