The work was done to develop a relatively efficient muffler for quieting the exhaust of a rock drill . The exhaust of a pneumatic rock drill is the source of the major part of the noise generated by the drill . The exhaust noise can be reduced in a number of different ways , but this study involved only reactive mufflers . The reactive muffler can be simulated by an electrical circuit . Information obtained from analogous electrical circuits was used to design an efficient exhaust muffler for pneumatic rock drills . Electrical analogies proved to be a valuable tool in the design of mufflers .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines explored new methods and technology for extracting coal from the Appalachian Mountain region of the Eastern United States. These methods were aimed at extracting coal from thin seams and focused on the use of "roof-fall-tolerant" (RFT) mining concepts. These methods could be used on existing, abandoned highwalls or in conjunction with new highwall mining. The research was conducted using small-scale and quasi-full-scale physical models to obtain experimental results. Details are provided on (1) the quasi-full-scale model for cross-ridge mining, (2) the quasi-full-scale model for down-ridge mining, (3) the test results of these models, and (4) recommendations for future research. Significant results include demonstration of the RFT concept, a discussion of expected coal produced from these methods, and recommendations for future research.

"Improving the safety of underground openings and optimizing ground support systems requires reliable ground characterization. This includes understanding the joints, discontinuities, and rock strength. Joint information can be obtained from borehole cameras, but measuring in-situ rock strength is very difficult. Use of borehole probes can be an ideal and efficient way to meet this requirement. This paper discusses the development of the Rock Strength Borehole Probe (RSBP) and presents the preliminary laboratory/field test. This device can be an accurate, flexible, quick, non-disruptive, and cost-effective alternative to estimate the rock strength inside boreholes in underground mines and tunnels. In addition, the scratch testing procedure in the laboratory by means of a newly developed miniature linear cutting machine is explained. Based on the results of these tests, two equations are developed to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of the sedimentary/metamorphic rocks. These equations, are based on testing 27 different sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks by full-scale scratch tests, including the cutting tests by a miniature disc. The results show a good correlation between the normal force and the compressive strength of sedimentary rock if the depth of the scratch is known. No significant correlation was observed for igneous rocks, due to the impacts of grain size.INTRODUCTIONEstimated rock mass properties are essential input for geomechanical studies and stability analysis for any structure constructed in or with rock. The availability of geological information is the crucial component of rock mass classification. One of the important parameters in evaluating rock mass properties is the intact rock strength. This parameter is usually measured by testing the core samples, obtained from exploration boreholes. These samples are subsequently tested in geomechanics laboratories. The test results offer limited information about the rock at the few boring locations despite all the efforts and costs. In addition, these results may not necessarily be representative of the behavior of the rock in the field as the test cannot provide the insitu condition of the ground."

O objetivo deste trabalho é utilizar a termodinâmica computacional para estudar as propriedades de escórias iniciais dessulfurantes utilizando misturas com diferentes fluxantes: fluorita, sodalita, borra de alumínio, B2O3 e ilmenita. A princípio, as misturas foram definidas e em seguida foram realizadas simulações para o aquecimento dessas misturas a 1350 ºC por meio do software FactSage 7.2. Assim, foi calculado o fator de dessulfuração (FDeS) para cada mistura com base nas condições de equilíbrio. As misturas contendo 5 e 10% de fluorita e 5% de sodalita foram as que apresentaram maior FDeS. Em contrapartida, as misturas com 10,15 e 20% de B2O3 tiveram os piores resultados nessa análise. Misturas da literatura também foram simuladas a fim de se obter o FDeS e relacioná-lo com a eficiência.

What exactly does clean coal mean? Mining coal creates dust and releases methane gas. And burning coal liberates CO2 and emits particulates, including SO2 and NOx. Coal creates wastes that are often stored in unsightly and potentially dangerous slag heaps and lagoons. When clean coal technology is discussed, it sometimes seems that creating modern or ?ultra super critical? coal-fired power stations is presented as the main or even the only answer. However, there may be a more holistic approach. Using the energy potential of coal is always going to have environmental impacts. Some of these will be negative. But the need to secure future energy resources demands that society tackle these negative issues and find ways to minimize and offset them.

Although production operations at mines, representing the extraction and removal of the mined material, often appear to receive the greatest amount of attention, the emphasis given to auxiliary operations is continually increasing. This is due to the changing economic, social, and environmental climate in which modern mines must operate. Auxiliary operations can best be described as those activities that are not directly related to the extraction and removal of the mined material, but must receive proper attention if recovery is to take place in a safe, efficient, and socially responsible manner. In fact, certain mining auxiliary operations, such as strata control and ventilation, are considered to be of such importance that they warrant separate sections in this Handbook. Judging from a mine-personnel standpoint, it is not uncommon for a mine to hire the same number or more individuals responsible for auxiliary operations as the number assigned to production.

This report is one of a series describing investigations within the Missouri River Basin in Montana made by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and and others concerned with the planning of Federal power developments in the basin. The report contains such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. The field investigations in Broadwater County were made during the late fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within the county were investigated. However, some long inactive mines and prospects on which little or no information is of record may have been omitted inadvertently. Many of the mines and prospects have been inactive for extended periods. Most of the underground workings now are inaccessible. Because of such conditions, impressions gained by the inspection of surface features have been supplemented necessarily, where possible, by information obtained from Federal and State publications.

The Bureau of Mines gas been studying the blast furnace for a number of years and has published detailed reports on various phases of its investigations. Inquiries frequently received for information of a more general character than that given in the detailed reports have promoted the preparation of an information circular to cover in a general way the important features of the Bureau of Mines blast-furnace investigations. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS OF FURNACE The modern blast furnace approximate a refractory-lined steel cylinder about 90 feet in height and 25 feet in diameter. It actually consists of a number of cylinders and truncated cones superimposed upon each other. The shape and dimensions of a modern furnace are shown in figure 1. The bottom section, commonly referred to as the hearth or crucible, is a cylindrical section about 12 feet high. Liquid metal and slag collect in this part of the furnace and are withdrawn at regular intervals; iron is removed at a level about 2 feet above the bottom of the furnace and slag at a level about 5 feet higher. Depending upon on the size of tie furnace, 40,000 to 75,000 cubic feet of preheated air per minute is introduced through from 10 to 16 tuyeres equally spaced around the periphery of the hearth.

THE object of the work was to increase the capacity of the plant and, if possible, to reduce costs of the actual unit grinding while doing so. The accompanying assays of an infra-sizer analysis of the cyanide tail (Table l) illustrate the problem in hand. The cyanide tail is a combination of two products, gangue and FeS2. The assay alters by virtue of a change in gold value due to grinding and the relative quantity of FeS2 in the sizes, which itself varies with the grind. The disposal tail is the residue after the cyanide tail is scavenged by flotation, most of the pyrite being removed for roasting. It presents a somewhat different problem, since grinding gangue is all gain, but -10 micron FeS2 does not float nearly as well as + 10 product. This results in compromise in the final size to be aimed at. Extra grinding has hardly any appreciable effect on the gold extraction from the FeS2. Spectral reflectance data for 335 minerals, including 228 minimum-maximum combinations for anisotropic minerals giving a total of 563 data sets, have been collected from the literature and combined into a single database. Quantitative color values for x, y, Y, Ad , and Pe referred to ICI standard i11uminant C have been calculated from the spectral reflectance data and are included in the database. The programs plot spectral reflectance curves together with all quantitative color data for each mineral in the database. The plots and data can be directed to a dot-matrix printer such that a databook of quantitative color and spectral reflectance having one mineral per page can be generated for the ore microscopy laboratory. In addition, by sorting the database and grouping the minerals, groups or individual minerals can be plotted on the chromaticity diagram, and this plot can also be sent to a dot-matrix printer. The programs are written in compiled BASICA for an IBM-PC with graphics capabilities and at least 128KB random access memory (RAM). The databases are accessible either through the BASIC programs or through any commercial database system capable of loading and writing to an ASCII format sequential file. The programs and database are available by sending a blank diskette and self addressed, stamped envelope to the authors.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an interactive computer program that enables mine operators and others to identify the effect of cut-ting system changes on relative dustiness at the face. The program, which simultaneously evaluates machine parameters, coal seam parame-ters, and operator-controllable parameters, was developed for use on any microcomputer using BASIC programming language. The program allows the user to change one or more of the cutting system parameters at a time to see how these changes affect relative dustiness. A complete program listing and flowchart are included along with operating in-structions and sample outputs. An example showing how to use the program is also included.

The. problem of supplying enough magnesia for the American war effort has become highly important. Before hostilities began, only about two-thirds of our, require vents came from domestic sources; now they must supply almost all the magnesia we need. A further burden is placed upon our own supply by the fact that more and more magnesia is being required, not alone to pace the war tempo of general industrial activity, but also to replace chrome ore in refractories and to make magnesium metal. The domestic magnesite and brucite industry is equipping itself to satisfy much of this greater demand for magnesia, but the remainder must be obtained elsewhere. The principal sources of magnesia are magnesite, brucite, dolomite or high-magnesium limestone, natural brines, sea water, salt-works bitterns, magnesium silicates, and magnesium salts. Although dolomite is tae subject of this paper, it should be considered in perspective with all these highly competitive sources of magnesia.

Os aços avançados de alta resistência (Advanced High Strength Steels - AHSS) vêm sendo uma solução atrativa na construção de estruturas automotivas mais leves e seguras, pois combinam alta resistência e boa conformabilidade. Neste trabalho, foram realizadas simulações numéricas e experimentos em escala industrial, com aços fornecidos pela Usiminas, da estampagem de uma travessa dianteira de suspensão automotiva. O objetivo desses experimentos foi avaliar a estampabilidade deste componente, que atualmente é fabricado com o aço de alta resistência baixa liga (HSLA340, 2,0 mm), quando substituído pelos aços Dual Phase (DP600, 1,6 e 1,8 mm) e Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP700, 1,6 mm). As simulações numéricas reproduziram o padrão de deformação destes materiais durante os processos de conformação e o perfil geométrico do componente. A travessa de suspensão automotiva foi estampada com sucesso com os AHSS propostos.

O projeto e a operação de estruturas que podem vir a conter trincas demandam estudos de integridade estrutural suportados por propriedades mecânicas à fadiga e à fratura advindas de ensaios experimentais (p. ex.: curvas J-R ou da/dN vs. ?K), sendo tais experimentos altamente dependentes da medição instantânea do tamanho da trinca. Essa medição em muitos casos é realizada com base na variação da flexibilidade com o crescimento do defeito. O objetivo do presente trabalho é validar experimentalmente soluções numéricas recentes de flexibilidade elástica que descrevem o tamanho instantâneo de uma trinca em corpos de prova de geometria C(T) e SE(B) incorporando efeitos tridimensionais. Ainda, objetiva comparar tais soluções com as disponíveis nas normas ASTM vigentes. Corpos de prova C(T) e SE(B) foram usinados conforme as referidas normas e testados em máquina universal de ensaios MTS 810.25. Na sequência, os dados obtidos foram convertidos em valores de flexibilidade normalizada (µ), determinando-se o tamanho de trinca (a) esperado com base nos referidos equacionamentos. As previsões de tamanho de trinca geradas foram comparadas com medições reais da profundidade de trinca obtidas de fractografias das amostras após separação final. No geral, tanto as soluções da ASTM como de Moreira (2014) foram consideradas acuradas e com erros máximos abaixo de ~ ±1,5%. No entanto, os resultados mostram equivalente aderência experimental das soluções disponíveis nas normas ASTM com as de Moreira (2014) para amostras C(T), mas melhor desempenho das propostas de Moreira para amostras SE(B) de variadas geometrias e profundidades de defeitos.

As ocorrências recentes de terremotos em diversos países têm incentivado o desenvolvimento de vergalhão com características sísmicas, ou seja, que apresente elevada resistência mecânica sem que a ductilidade seja deteriorada. Este trabalho propôs uma abordagem investigativa dos principais fenômenos metalúrgicos atuantes no processo de laminação a quente de vergalhão em rolo Ø20 mm. Foi utilizado um modelo matemático de evolução microestutural com equações capazes de prever a quantidade de elementos microligantes ao longo do processo, a cinética de precipitação e o comportamento do tamanho de grão austenítico durante todo o tempo de laminação. Os resultados industriais de microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas convergiram com os resultados previstos pelo modelo. Com combinação do modelo matemático com testes industriais foi possível obter vergalhão com limite de escoamento superior a 600 MPa e alongamento de 15 %.

Aços baixo-carbono com microestruturas ferrítico-bainíticos, bifásico, ou multifásicos têm características apreciáveis para a indústria automobilística, pois, combinam resistência, ductilidade e conformabilidade, permitindo produzir chapas mais finas resultando na redução do peso. Com o intuito de avaliar as características mecânicas e microestruturais obtidas através da variação da temperatura de bobinamento, desenvolveu-se um estudo a partir de um aço baixo carbono com microadição de molibdênio e nióbio, onde se verificou a possibilidade de produzir um aço dual phase na forma de chapas laminadas a quente, em escala industrial. Pode-se verificar que para menores temperaturas de bobinamento, obteve-se melhor desempenho quanto ao aumento da resistência mecânica e garantia de uma alta ductilidade vinculados a um refino expressivo no tamanho de grão da matriz ferrítica em conjunto com uma segunda fase com evidência de ilhas de martensita.

La pyrométallurgie du cuivre est essentiellement une chaîne de trois étapes successives d’oxydation préférentielle du fer et du soufre et des impuretés moins nobles que le cuivre qui sont contenues dans le concentré de cuivre issu de l’usine de concentration du minerai, aussi appelée concentrateur. La Figure 1 illustre la chaîne complète d’élaboration du cuivre depuis la mine jusqu’au cuivre pur. La voie hydrométallurgique traite le concentré par lixiviation, c.à.d. par dissolution en phase aqueuse à température typiquement inférieure à 100 ou 150⁰C, alors que la voie pyrométallurgique traite le concentré par fusion à température de l’ordre de 1200 à 1300⁰C.

NOTHING in this paper is to be understood as even suggesting a moment's suspension of the splendid work now going forward on the Isthmus of Panama, except so far as it is related to the proposed locks. All the work already done, and all material purchased or ordered, would be available for the plan herein proposed. The situation and the problem concerned may be summarized as. follows : The scheme of a lock-canal through the Isthmus of Panama was adopted, as is well known, on two principal grounds-namely, the greater expense of a sea-level canal, and the longer time required for its construction. Of these, the latter is believed to have been the more influential. But further developments have diminished the weight of both, so that a reconsideration of the question is warranted. It is the purpose of this paper to advocate such a reconsideration-emphasizing the importance of certain objections to the lock-canal not mentioned or not duly appreciated in the report of those members of the International Board of Consulting Engineers who favored this form; showing the nature and bearing of the new facts developed; and, finally, proposing a combination of well-known methods and apparatus, which would, in my judgment, effect the construction of a sea-level canal in less time, and perhaps at no greater cost, than will be required for the remaining work on the lock-canal. I. OBJECTIONS TO A LOCK-CANAL. 1. Earthquakes. Two centuries ago Panama is said to have been destroyed by an earthquake. O presente trabalho apresenta um estudo da influência do tratamento de nitretação a plasma sobre a dureza de lâminas utilizadas em prensa-facas de um picador de toras industrial. Tais peças são fabricadas em ligas com alto teor de Cromo e Carbono, assemelhando-se quimicamente aos aços para trabalho a frio AISI da série D. Para o estudo em questão, pequenas amostras das lâminas receberam tratamento térmico de têmpera e duplo revenido,e posteriormente foram nitretadas a plasma por 30, 90, 180, 360 minutos, em temperatura de 450°C, com pressão fixada em 2 Torr e mistura gasosa de 20%N2 e 80%H2. Logo após foram realizadas análises metalográficas com auxílio de microscópio óptico, ensaio de dureza superficial e perfil de dureza com microdurômetro em escala Vickers. Os resultados mostraram que para todos os tempos de tratamento houve endurecimento superficial em relação ao material não tratado, onde o tempo de 180 minutos propiciou a formação de camada com maior valor médio de dureza superficial “1171,20 HV”.
