This report presents a literature review conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The review summarizes what has been learned from the large volume of empirical studies on the effectiveness of eight types of interventions intended to increase organizational effectiveness via in the management of human resources. The interventions concern the following: recruitment, selection, training, objective feedback, goal setting, reward systems, participative management practices and organization development. Although many of these interventions appear to have the potential for improving the safety and efficiency of mining operations, it does not appear that they are being widely used. Examples are given of the successful use of a few of these interventions at mining operations. An analysis of the relationship between coal mine productivity and safety is also presented. This analysis generally supports the view that good safety performance and high productivity are NOT incompatible goals. In fact, safe mines also tend to be more productive and vice versa.

Computerized thermodynamic databases for solid and liquid metal, slag and solid oxide phases in the Al2O3-CaO-CoO-CrO-Cr2O3-FeO-Fe2O3-MgO-MnO-NiO-SiO2-S system have been developed by critical evaluation/optimization of all available phase equilibrium and thermodynamic data. The databases contain parameters of models specifically developed for molten slags, liquid steel and solid oxide solutions such as spinels, pyroxenes, olivine, monoxide (wustite, periclase, lime), corundum, etc. By means of the optimization process, model parameters are found which reproduce all thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data within experimental error limits. Furthermore, the models permit extrapolation into regions of temperature and composition where data are not available. The databases are automatically accessed by user-friendly software that calculates complex equilibria involving simultaneously slag, metal, refractories and gases, for systems with many components, over wide ranges of temperature, oxygen potential and pressure. A short review of the available databases is presented. The critical evaluation/optimization procedure is outlined using the Al2O3-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2and Al2O3-CaO-MnO-SiO2systemsas examples. Several applications of the databases to deoxidation of iron and to inclusion control in steel are discussed. The Reefton Goldfield, both historically and potentially, represents a significant gold producing camp in the Westland province of New Zealand. Some two million ounces of gold have been produced from the Greenland Group host rocks between 1870 and 1951 with the most significant producers being the Blackwater and Globe Progress mines.   Steep terrain, high rainfall, poor outcrop, widespread fluvio-glacial deposits, tertiary cover and sometimes onerous environmental access conditions have proved a challenge to conventional exploration techniques. In addition classic exploration techniques have come up against a desire to reduce exploration cycle time and exploration costs while increasing both quality and quantity of geological information.   The trial, and subsequent implementation, of Wacker sampling has proved a highly successful and effective geochemical tool currently being utilised to target, discover, and define potential economic gold mineralisation in the Reefton Goldfield.

In 1944, the 78th congress of the United States enacted Public Law 290, which directed the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Bureau of Mines, to furnish industry with basic information and cost data for the development of a synthetic liquid fuels industry. Recently published information with respect to the cost of synthetic liquid fuels processes indicates a wide variation in estimated results. To clarify the results and inconsistencies for the hydrogenation of coal, the Bureau of Mines has prepared preliminary designs and calculated detailed investment costs from which the operating costs to produce 30,000 barrels per day of liquid products, mainly gasoline, by coal hydrogenation were obtained.

The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

"The self-heating facility developed at the Noranda Technology Centre [Rosenblum and coworkers, 2001; 1995] has now been established in the Department of Mining, Metals and Materials Engineering at McGill University. A research program into mechanisms has been initiated (with support now from four industrial partners under Camiro). The first investigation is into the role of pyrrhotite (Po), the most commonly suspected mineral to trigger self-heating. Following a standard experimental protocol, self-heating was assessed on samples of Po mixed with sand as an inert material. With increasing Po content, self heating progressively increased but, interestingly, the samples visually appeared less and less oxidized. A high Po content, it was hypothesized, may give a more reducing environment favouring formation of H2S. The presence of this gas could be significant as it has a high exothermic heat of reaction with oxygen. The system was modified to test the hypothesis by including copper pieces and copper sulphate to react with (and therefore reveal) the gas as copper sulphide. Evidence is presented in support of H2S production, which to our knowledge has not been shown before and introduces a potentially important avenue of investigation into self-heating mechanisms.INTRODUCTIONSelf-heating of sulphide minerals poses potential environmental and safety hazards in mining of ores, and storage and transport of concentrates. While some conditions are known to be critical, the reactions remain poorly understood making self-heating difficult to predict and control.A major advance in measurement was introduced by Rosenblum and co-workers [Rosenblum et al., 2001; Rosenblum and Spira 1995]. A self-heating assessment method was developed and applied to various sulphide-bearing materials The method is based upon automated calorimetric cells with data acquisition, now available to McGill researchers and which have been used for the study reported here."

The mining sequence at Noranda?s Bell-Allard mine calls for two mining fronts retreating toward a central pillar known as the Retreat Zone between pyramids A and C. It is clear from numerical modeling and rock mass characterization that the induced stress level in the pillar will exceed the rock mass capacity. A mining plan was developed including the re-dimensioniong of stopes in the Retreat Zone, additional ground support and instrumentation in order to ensure the safety of the workforce and to maximize ore recovery while minimizing production delays. The mining strategy consists in allowing the rock mass to fracture and fail progressively while maintaining control of the existing openings with the appropriate support. A systematic analysis of rockbursting and caving hazards was conducted for all accesses and stopes in order to plan ground support and instrumentation needs.

From 1993 through 1999 Cyprus Amax Minerals Company successfully completed eight major construction projects around the world. Six greenfield mines were brought into production, an ongoing operation was completely modernized, and an environmental issue was appropriately remediated. The projects stretched over three continents, from arctic Russia to the Atacama Desert, from 16,000feet to sea level, from city suburbs to remote wilderness, from a low of $130 million to over $1 billion. Open pit and underground; mill and leach; gold, copper, molybdenum, and coal were all encompassed. The breadth of diversity experience from these projects inspired Cyprus Amax to create a “best practices” project management protocol, to steer corporate expansion into the next millenium. This paper summarizes those best practices, while high-lighting project management pitfalls to avoid.

In responding to mine fires and explosions, accurate and timely analysis of the mine atmosphere is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting, mine rescue and mine recovery operations. For many years instantaneous analyses were available to rescue workers using handheld or portable gas detection equipment, including infrared, electrochemical, or catalytic measuring devices for a limited number of specific gases such as oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Instantaneous sensing technology is not available for all gases, such as nitrogen and hydrocarbons, found in a mine fire atmosphere and cross-sensitivity can be a problem with this technology. For these reasons, air samples are collected for injection into a gas chromatograph for a complete and accurate analysis for all gases including oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, as well as ?fire gases? such as hydrogen, ethylene, ethane, and acetylene. This method requires additional time for transporting the samples to the laboratory near the mine, as well as an instrument operator to inject the samples for analysis. The use of a portable micro gas chromatograph with a continuous and automatic injection system has been implemented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during mine recovery operations. The device directly samples the mine atmosphere from an underground location every twelve minutes and automatically analyzes the samples for all of the mine fire gases. The portable unit utilizes micro technology and the operating software has been modified to perform the calculation of sample results in and Excel® spreadsheet without user interaction. This paper describes the micro gas chromatograph system and its use at a recent mine recovery operation. The automated remote operation of the micro gas chromatograph has been shown to be a good alternative to infrared and electrochemical sensors used for mine atmosphere analysis.

"Construction of the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan is well under way. Production is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2007. When in full production, the mine is projected to produce a net 18,000,000 pounds of U3O8 per annum from a high grade ore averaging approximately 20% U3O8.Water management was a major issue that required substantial effort in the Cigar Lake design. Not only is effluent quality controlled, a tight water balance to minimize effluent volume is also designed into processes in order to minimize environmental impact. This paper focuses on the water treatment process and water handling equipment, as well as the operating philosophies that will reduce fresh water consumption to a minimum. An overview of the mining and ore handling systems, as well as aspects of controlling water production from the ore formation and the mine development areas will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Cigar Lake ore body has proven and probable reserves that total 232 million pounds U3O8. Cigar Lake is the world’s largest undeveloped high-grade deposit. It is the second largest highgrade deposit surpassed only by the McArthur River deposit another Cameco - operated mine in the Saskatchewan Athabasca Basin. Cigar Lake is owned 50% by Cameco Corporation, 37% by AREVA (COGEMA Resources Inc.), 8% by Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. and 5% by TEPCO Resources Inc. When production starts in 2007, ground ore slurry from Cigar Lake will be shipped to the McClean Lake mill (owned by AREVA) some 80 km away. All of the Cigar Lake uranium will be leached from the ore at McClean Lake. During initial production ramp up, all uranium will be processed at McClean Lake to yellow cake (uranium oxide). After the average production has exceeded a 10 million pound per year rate, Cigar Lake uranium will begin to flow from the McClean Lake Mill to the Rabbit Lake Mill. At this point, subject to regulatory approval, 57% of the Cigar Lake uranium, in a uranium rich solution, will be transported to Rabbit Lake mill (owned by Cameco) for purification to yellow cake. The major threat to the sustainability of Aluminium Industry is its significant contribution to global warming by way of generation of non eco-friendly gases during its production cycle from Bauxite to the finished product. Though reduction measures are taken in control and effective recovery of values from pot room gases, efforts in use of environment friendly additives in the final products production line is warranted. In this line, the present paper describes our efforts in the use of a new generation refining flux which apart from helping in effective removal of alkali metals, reduction in inclusions and ensure a better metal cleanliness shall also aide in reduction of obnoxious gases generated during the metal refining process prior to casting. The aim of the current work was to reconcile the practical results with the old generation fluxes used. Further improvements to bring in a better metal cleanliness will also be discussed.

This paper covers the application of a systematic maintenance plan by the Plant Engineering Department of Rio Algom Mines Limited, Milliken Division. The plan established the function of work study, developed and installed formal work planning and labour cost control procedures, and extended the existing preventive maintenance routines. In June, 1961, assisted by management consultants, a more scientific approach to maintenance was instituted. The emphasis was placed on the control of labour. The development and application of the primary control system was established with-in six months. Since then, the Department has operated for a year, consolidating the system. The procedure of the installation, the results achieved and the results to be expected will be discussed. JNTRODUCTION THE Milliken Division of Rio Algom Mines Limited operates a 3,000-ton-per-day uranium mine, in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, which went into production in April of 1958. The lowest operating level is 3,000 feet below surface. Mining is carried out by open stopping, with planned pillar support and footwall haulage on rail.

The shear behaviour of reinforced rock joints is investigated for the bolt-grout-rock interaction and for failure mechanism. The effectiveness of the bolt application under lateral and axial loading conditions within surrounding materials is investigated in different medium strength. Double shearing testing of bolts were studied in concrete blocks of 20, 40, 50 and 100 MPa strengths, subjected to different pretension loads of 0, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 80 KN respectively. The experimental study was complemented with three-dimensional numerical analysis. Parameters examined include: shear resistance, shear displacement, induced strains and stresses during bolt bending process and its ultimate failure across the sheared joint planes. The conclusions drawn from the study were; the level of bolt resistance to shearing was influenced by the bolt profile configuration, the strength of the rock or medium influenced the level of load generated on the bolt, and the increase in bolt pretension has contributed to the increased shearing load of the bolted medium.

Because of an urgent national need for manganese, the deposits in the Little Florida Mountains of Lune County N. Mex., were visited by O.H. Metzger, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 12 and 13, 1940, accompanied on the second day by S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey. After this preliminary examination, it was recommended that exploratory work be done by the Bureau of Mines on several properties in the district. An exploratory project of trenching, sampling, and core drilling was started by the Bureau of Mines in September 1940 and completed in May 1941.2/ Work was done on three properties - the Luna mine, the American group of claims, and the Manganese Valley mine. The Little Florida manganese district is situated on the eastern slope of the Little Florida Mountains about 2 miles south of U. S. Highway 80-90, 12 to 14 miles southeast of Deming, Luna County, N. Mex. The principal claims comprise the Luna Manganese, American, and Manganese Valley groups.

Discharge vessels of advanced light sources are made of translucent polycrystalline Al2O3(PCA).These tubes contain salt mixtures, which essentially consist of metal halides. The salt mixture is present as a melt at the coldest spot of the vessel under operating conditions and vaporizes partly. The temperatures of the coldest spot range between 1200 K and 1300 K, depending on the lamp performance. The maximum wall temperatures range up to 1500 K and for special purposes up to1700 K. Important constituents of the melt are alkali halides AX (A = Na, Cs, X= Br, I) and rare earth metal halides LnX3(Ln = Dy, Ho, Tm). Severe corrosion attack on the wall material is observed in the PCA discharge vessels. The aim of this work is to elucidate the corrosion mechanism. Annealing experiments under well defined temperatures were carried out in order to understand the complex chemical corrosion processes. Two different annealing vessels were used, one for experiments under isothermal conditions with a temperature of 1473 K and one for experiments with a linear temperature gradient from 1450 K to 1600 K. The vessels were filled with salt mixtures of different compositions and annealed for 1000 h. The corrosion attack was characterised by XRD, analytical electron microscopy, high temperature mass spectrometry, and chemical analysis of the salt melts. The results of our investigations show that the corrosion attack is caused by vapour species and by the salt melt. The most severe corrosion is observed in vessels filled with mixtures of alkali halides and rare earth metal halides. No corrosion of the alumina is practically observed if pure alkali halides or pure rare earth metal halides are present in the annealing vessel. "In late 1985, B-zone ore was first processed through the Eldor Mines mill at Rabbit Lake. Extensive modifications had been completed in order to mill this ore. In-plant process development was initiated to tune up the new circuits and concentrated on leaching, solvent extraction, impurity and uranium precipitation and tailing and effluent treatment. This process development effort and the results are described.INTRODUCTIONEldor Mines, a division of Eldorado Resources Limited, operates the Rabbit lake mine-mill complex at Collins Bay on the western shore of Wollaston Lake in northeastern Saskatchewan.The first orebody was discovered in 1968 by Gulf Minerals Canada Limited below a small body of water named Rabbit Lake. Ore from the Rabbit Lake (RL) deposit was first processed through the new mill in June, 1975, with depletion scheduled over the next ten years. Continued exploration in the area led to the discovery of four orebodies in the vicinity of Collins Bay: A-zone (1971), B-zone (1977), D-zone (1978) and Eagle Point (1980). Collins Bay is about ten kilometres from the mill facility.In 1982, Gulf Minerals was acquired by Eldorado Nuclear Ltd., who continued the development effort to bring the B-zone deposit into production. The RL pit was mined out in May, 1984 with stockpiled ore providing mill feed until startup on B-zone ore, which was scheduled for November, 1985."

Massive landslides display complex deformation processes. For instance, slope movements of the Downie Slide, monitored using borehole inclinometers, extensometers, and survey monuments, show considerable spatial and temporal inconsistencies in the displacement rates. This study assesses the influence that inferred shear surface geometry, as a key factor contributing to variable slope movements, has on resolving spatially discriminated slope deformations in three-dimensions. Borehole data defines the shear surface location at discrete points within the slide and therefore, the shear surface geometry for the extent of the slide must be largely inferred. A series of three-dimensional numerical simulations have been run to assess the effect of different interpretations of the shear surface geometry. This investigation illustrates the importance of rigorous geospatial definition of slip surface geometry and the value of three dimensional modelling.

Between 45,000 and 50,000 claims for subsidence are submitted each year to the German hard coal industry. In order to improve the service to claimants a quality management was established in 2005. This paper describes the process now used for handling these claims. A quality check has also been carried out by way of a customer survey, which was performed by an independent research agency. The results of the survey are presented in this paper. In Germany, research into mining subsidence mainly involves the prediction of ground movements caused by deep mining operations. Special areas of research are subsidence reducing aspects of the extraction panel planning, especially from the point of view of mining dynamics, as well as securing and restoration measures. This work seeks to prevent or minimize mining-induced damages close to the surface, for instance, buildings or infrastructure installations (such as pipelines), or underground mine openings (e.g. shafts). Roof collapses and surface fractures caused by shallow mine workings of an earlier era currently constitute a special area of investigation.

The Brisbane City Council has implemented a program of continual improvement at its Mount Coottha Quarry in the heart of Brisbane, Australia. The program has been underway for the past 6 years, and has resulted in very significant improvements in terms of both the cost effectiveness of its operation, and in terms of its environmental impact on nearby residents. The work has included a focus, amongst other things, on blasting efficiency and has challenged conventional thinking in terms of the size of blasts fired, the frequency of firing, the diameter of blastholes, and the use of bulk emulsion or slurry explosives.
