The problems of poor drilling in underground operations have been highlighted on many occasions. Incorrect collaring and poor angular deviation can all lead to an increased block size, dilution, over-break adding to both cost and time, while in a tunnelling operation sidewall damage and a poor percentage pull from a blasted round has similar consequences. This paper sets out to further investigate the ability of the laser scanner method of obtaining drill hole deviations and collaring errors at the face as described by Wetherelt and Williams (2006). Tests were carried out to compare measured inter-hole burdens from this method in comparison to that obtained using a total station survey. To investigate the ability of these methods to accurately determine drilling errors, a field test was carried out through an analysis of a series of pre-drilled blast holes of known inclination and direction. A time-motion study was also conducted for a varied number of holes to assess the usability of each method. In line with current research into blast vibration being undertaken at the Camborne School of Mines, 6 cut blasts were carried out to establish the effect of poor drilling on a blasts success to see whether an increased burden at the toe of a hole had an influence on vibration.

Gasification is a process that converts a carbon feedstock into synthesis gas (CO+H2). Slagging gasifiers operate at high temperature and pressure and in a corrosive-wear environment from the slag. Cr2O3-based refractory linings are used to protect the steel vessel that comprises the gasifier from the aggressive gasification environment. Increasing service life of the gasifier is one of the keys for wide spread development of this technology. In support of the goals, research on the gasifier atmosphere, the slag chemistry, the interaction of Cr2O3 refractory with different feedstock mixtures (e.g., coal and petcoke) were characterized by post mortem analysis of bricks from service in gasifiers and thermodynamics simulation of the environment. Examples demonstrating how thermodynamic calculations can explain the post mortem results and make predictions of material interactions will be given. Attention is placed on the possibility of Cr+6 in different feedstock mixtures and operating conditions.

Fines and unnecessarily small rock fragments are created by as many as four identifiable breakage mechanisms which operate close to the charged section or sections of the blasthole. The peak blasthole pressure (Pb) should not exceed that value at which the rock starts to fail in compression. Excessive Pb values can be prevented by carefully selecting:1. the composition, density and/or diameter of the charge, and2. the initiation/priming system.The percentage of fines increases with:1. increases in the charge diameter:blasthole diameter ratio, burden distance, blasthole diameter, effective sub-drilling and size of blast, and2. decreases in blasthole spacing, stemming height and the length:width ratio of the blast block.Decked charges tend to reduce the percentage of fines.Excessive fragmentation is more evident in buffer blasting and sinking cut shots than in blasts fired to a clean free face. Initiation sequences which give effective burdens considerably less than drilled burdens encourage the minimization of fines, as does an inter-row delay time which promotes good progressive relief of burden.The wastage of explosive energy in creating fines is most pronounced where fully-coupled, energetic charges are fired in weak and/or highly porous rocks. This is especially so where forward movement of the strata is impeded by buffer rock, excessive burden distances and/or inadequate inter-row delay times.

THE ore bodies of the Butte district1 are found in many different vein systems having many different structural characteristics; some are narrow with self-supporting ore but with weak walls; some are wide with weak or strong ore and weak walls; some of the veins dip steeply and others do not; some have well defined walls, and others, in the "horsetail" area, are mined to sample limits. Consequently, many types of stoping methods are used in mining these ores. The stoping methods used in the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's properties are the square-set and cut-and-fill. The square-set method is the principal stoping method used because, generally speaking, the ore and walls are weak, the ore is high grade, and good extraction is required. These square-set stopes may be classified as conventional, vertical slice, slot, timber rill, and Mitchell slice types. The conventional type square-sets are those of various shapes and sizes, mined by horizontal slicing to the boundaries of the stopes. The rock is slid to the chute and the filling is moved by gravity. The ore and waste may be handled with a scraper when local conditions require it. The vertical-slice square-set system is the type used in narrow veins that are mined in vertical panels. The slot stopes are stopes in wide veins that employ a slot across the vein instead of a con- ventional chute to handle the ore. The timber rill fs a type of square set in which the ore is mined as in inclined cut and fill but the square-set timber is used. The Mitchell slice is the type used for some broken or heavy ore blocks, or for pillar extraction between two converging slot stopes. The cut-and-fill method is used where the ore will stand without much support although the walls may be weak. The principal type of this method is the horizontal cut-and-fill, with mechanical scraping. The inclined cut-and-fill, or rill, stopes are used in some veins too narrow for scraping. The production from the various meth: ods in use for the second six months of 1944 are shown in Table I. [ ] This paper deals mainly with the vertical slice and slot types of square-set stoping, because of their effect on production locally and their potential possibilities here and in other districts, with sufficient reference to conventional square-setting for comparison.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is constructing a new tunneled route under Seattle to replace the existing State Route 99, Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV), which follows the historic waterfront for several miles. The viaduct separates the businesses that rely upon the tourist trade from the down-town area. The reconnection of the city to the waterfront areas will occur following the completion of the SR99 Re-placement program that replaces the aging structure that was severely impacted by the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, with a state-of-the-art, twin-deck highway with a world record-breaking 17.4-m (57.3-ft) bored tunnel. Constructed in the 1950s, the double-tiered viaduct is nearly 3.2 km (2 miles) long and runs parallel to city?s waterfront. The viaduct, which is partially supported by the seawall, is a vital local and regional transportation link and carries about 110,000 vehicles each day. The seawall, built from concrete and timber in the 1930s, extends along Seattle?s waterfront and supports the soil behind it. Studies in the 1990s showed that the viaduct was nearing the end of its useful life, apparent by its exposed rebar and weakened columns. The 2001 Nisqually earth-quake further damaged the viaduct, forcing WSDOT to temporarily close it for inspection and limited repairs. The viaduct and nearby seawall are vulnerable to an-other earthquake and continue to show signs of age and deterioration. In engineering design of operator?s compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra-low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomics principles within the collective design process, ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost-effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity.

"A gold bearing pyrite concentrate was treated at the demonstration scale (15 t/d) for the extraction of gold using a cyanide-free process. The pyrite was depressed in the flotation circuit in order to promote the flotation of copper and to achieve a sufficient copper grade to meet the copper smelter criteria. However, the recoveries of copper were 80% and only about 50% for the gold was found in the copper concentrate. The balance of the gold (50%) and copper (20%) contained in the pyrite concentrate as a reject from an overall flotation circuit. The gold grade in the pyrite concentrate is 5.40 g Au/t and copper about 0.77%. About 170 tons of pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant. The concentrate was first oxidized using a fluid bed to produce a calcine. Copper was then extracted as copper sulphate using diluted sulphuric acid. The residual solid was submitted to the DST chlorination process for gold extraction. Thereafter, the gold was recovered from the pregnant brine by precipitation over silica using DST proprietary process. The maximum gold recovery by chlorination was 90%. The average gold recovery by cyanidation of these calcines was 71%.IntroductionDundee Sustainable Technologies (“DST”) has developed a chlorination process as an alternative to the conventional cyanidation process for the extraction of precious metals from ores or concentrates. The technology offers viable and efficient gold recoveries and the ability to handle refractory ores and contaminated material (As, Hg, etc..). The process was successfully demonstrated on hundreds of samples provided by various mines, exploration and development projects and has evolved from laboratory experiment to demonstration at an industrial scale.DST’s chlorination process operates in a closed loop circuit, which implies that no liquid effluents are generated. The chemistry and process design allows precious metal deposits containing base metals to be treated viably. The tailings from the process are inert and non-toxic, sulphide depleted and thus non-acid generating. The efficiency of the process has demonstrated excellent gold recoveries within a fraction of the time needed for cyanidation to obtain similar results. The company completed in 2015 the construction of the first industrial demonstration plant operating with the DST technology. The plant has a capacity of 15 tons per day of mineral concentrate, and the ability to extract gold and silver utilizing DST chlorination technology.DST has tested its chlorination technology at demonstration scale on the refractory pyrite concentrate containing 5.40 g Au/t and 0.8 %copper. This auriferous pyrite concentrate, was by-product of copper concentrate respecting the copper smelter norms, is produced in a country where cyanide is prohibited and refractory to cyanidation. The pyrite concentrate was initially processed successfully (gold recoveries: > 90%) by the DST technology at laboratory (2011: 20 kg) and pilot (2014: 5 tons) scales to extract gold. About 170 tons of this pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant located in Thetford Mines."

River Des Peres Foul water Interceptor (Skinker–McCausland Tunnel) is a gravity sewer tunnel constructed to eliminate dry sewage overflows during high river stages and to improve the wastewater collection and treatment. The original 78-inch (2m)finished diameter Skinker-McCausland Tunnel started as a 21,500 feet (6.5km)interceptor with 13 work, drop and access shafts. The tunnel constructions included soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling in karst formation with maximum overburden of 175 feet (53m). Due to the success of the project, the tunnel alignment was extended another13,361 feet (4.1 km) and 7 new structures by negotiating two additional segments with the contractor and the designers.

El presente texto describe las características estructurales y estratigráficas de los yacimientos epitermales de baja sulfuración en el corredor estructural de San Pablo en Porculla, Cajamarca. En este sentido, el corredor se relaciona a un sistema de fallas regional que tiene rumbo general NW-SW y está segmentado por fallas transformantes de dirección NE-SW, que limitan bloques estructurales. Asimismo, sobre este corredor estructural se ubican en forma alineada una serie de yacimientos epitermales del tipo baja sulfuración. Los yacimientos están controlados por fallas de dirección NW-SE y contienen mineralización en vetas y mantos con relleno de cuarzos, calcita y baritina con importantes valores de oro y oro-plata y las estructuras menores relacionadas a las fallas transformantes. Finalmente, estos yacimientos pueden constituir un nuevo e importante objetivo de exploración por minerales de oro – plata del tipo bonanza.

With the dawning of a new century came the beginning of a new era in the coal industry. Instead of the traditional practice of only buying and selling produced coal in the United States, a coal futures market was established. The New York Mercantile Exchange began trading coal futures in July 2001. But, even in this new era, many of the old is-sues that have beset the coal industry still remain, as was evident in2001. Coal production increased to are cord level during 2001, according to preliminary data from the US Energy Information Administration(EIA). Production in 2001 rose by4% to 1.01 Gt (1.12 billion st), compared with 2000 (Table 1). This barely surpassed the previous record level of 1 Gt (1.11 billion st)set in 1998. Coal consumption remained unchanged. The additional production was used to replenish the depleted stockpiles that had resulted after two years of declining coal production and increasing coal consumption.

There are several thousand remote stream crossing structures in the Tongass National Forest in need of removal. In 2007 thirty-three collapsing log bridges, log culverts, and metal culverts no longer in use were removed with explosives. Species of salmon, trout, char, and sculpin are present in the project area. Blasting overpressures may injure or kill fish in streams and ground vibrations can damage salmonid embryos in streambeds. Regulatory agencies offer guidelines with limits for blasting induced overpressures and vibrations. However, there has been no quantification of blast overpressures in shallow streams. Methods used to predict lethal levels for various blasting applications have not been completely validated. This research provides guidance for analyzing ground vibrations and water overpressures during blasting activities in or around fish streams.

President Lien presented Mrs. Holmes with the first of speaker appreciation gifts presented by his firm Amax Coal West, Inc. These were books by Rand-McNally entitled The Executive Golfer Guide. Following the coffee break, Clark Moseley presented the first annual Institute Safety Achievement Awards for the safest mines in the eight member state region. The awards were based on: 1. Large diameter piles (2 to 3 m diameter, both driven and drilled) are being used more frequently by designers of bridge foundations. The use of these large piles allows the pile cap to be positioned off the bottom but usually still below water. Conventional cofferdams as shown in Figure 1 below are not suited to this type of pile cap. However, float-in cofferdams offer a viable alternative. This paper describes the float-in cofferdam system, its initial development for use on the Bath-Woolwich Bridge in Maine and its most recent application on the new Carquinez Bridge in California.

During the production of pure TiO2for the pigment industry, ilmenite, containing 35?60% TiO2, is reduced to high titania slag, containing 70?95% ?TiO2? and pig iron. The high titania slag produced, consists mainly of titanium in different oxidation states and FeO in equilibrium with liquid iron. To predict the phase and chemical reaction equilibria in a furnace, a suitable solution model is required with accurately determined binary interaction parameters, as slag melts tend to behave very non-ideally. This paper investigates two popular slag models, namely, modified quasi-Chemical (MQC) model and the cell model and provides the binary interaction parameters based on recently published data of the ternary system and critically assessed published unary and binary data. Very few modelling results have been published on the ternary Ti-Fe-O system pertaining to high titanium slags. The solution models, with their regressed interaction parameters, can subsequently be implemented in commercial software of the slag-metal phase equilibria to predict how much and which type of solids will precipitate for a given bulk slag chemistry and operating temperature or, alternatively, above which temperature should a furnace be operated to avoid excessive solids precipitation.

Design and construction of the Epping to Chatswood Rail Line tunnels in Sydney, Australia required an innovative approach to define hydrogeological properties of the Sydney Hawkesbury Sandstone and provided an insight into the hydraulic behaviour of fractured sedimentary rocks. To meet restrictive water inflow and infiltration criteria both the pre-treatment of zones of fractured or highly jointed rock, and waterproofing using an interior spray on membrane for the finished drained tunnels and stations was required. Methods typically used to address the interaction of groundwater and tunnels in the Sydney Basin are demonstrated by case histories from major design-build tunnel projects.

In iron ore sintering, packing the granules onto the sintering strand to form a porous bed with optimum permeability is a complex dynamic process. The packed bed voidage is the key factor determining the flame front speed and the final sinter productivity and quality. Previous studies have found that granules are soft quasi-particles with a typical structure of nuclei with an adhering fines layer. The deformation of the adhering layer greatly affects the bed voidage during packing, which is related to the strength of the adhering layer and the force exerted on the granules. In this study, tablets simulating the particle size distribution in the adhering layer of granules were made for four single ore blends. Both the tensile strength and shear strength properties of these tablets were investigated as a function of water content by the uniaxial compression test and direct shear test respectively. The results of compression tests show that the adhering layer becomes weaker and more compliant with the increase of moisture. The most porous ore has a more rigid adhering layer than the other three tested iron ores at any given moisture content. In direct shear tests, the internal friction angle of the adhering layer ranged from 31° to 37° and varied little with the moisture content or ore type. The cohesion constant is around 1 kPa and is quite small compared to the stress applied to the granules during packing. Combined with the results of granulation and packing experiments, the influence of the adhering fines layer deformation on the degree of voidage loss is specifically discussed.CITATION:Zhou, M, Zhou, H and Honeyands, T, 2017. The shift of mining activities to increasingly more diverse locations places the industry in conflict with local residents over land use and water access. In Perú, there have been significant rises in mining community conflicts with few long term resolutions being apparent. This paper examines the role of culture in these conflicts and suggests that progress maybe able to be made should deliberative engagement occur. Also, that mining conflicts are inevitable and that Peru’s cultural heritage, while contributing to the distance between parties is also the basis from which to start of a process of resolution, should both sides wish to gain the appropriate skills for a more deliberative approach.

For the purpose of determining confidence limits for ore grade estimates, an extensive simulated data base was used, which included 1728 ore blocks with ‘actual’ grades and the corresponding estimates based on ordinary and simple kriging. The practical results show that conditional unbiasedness is essential and that acceptable confidence limits can then be set using Normal theory for the simulated error distribution based on the logarithms of the ratios of ‘actuals’/estimates with a variance related to the kriging variance. The mean of the data used to prepare the variogram and the estimated block grade are to be used properly in this approach. A practical analysis was also done of the actual point and block data from a very large mined out Carbon Leader area. The distributions of the actual grades for two levels of block sizes with different levels of variability were fitted using three models, ie. 2-. 3- and compound-lognormal. The trends of tonnages, grades and relative profits for a range of pay limits, as well as the usual tonnage-grade curves, show a practical insensitivity for the choice between the three lognormal models considered.

Quarries around Auckland have reached or are reaching the ends of their lives, which raises issues about rehabilitation. Significant volumes of 'cleanfill' are generated by the City, particularly during phases of urban renewal and development. Emplacement of the fill in quarries removes the problem of fill disposal and provides an opportunity for restoration of the quarry site.There is a compatibility between quarrying and cleanfilling because at quarries:Truck routes are already established Neighbours are accustomed to the effects and appropriate buffer distances have been established Bringing fill into a site attracts aggregate sales and is very efficient. Fill originates from construction sites and ad-hoc excavations and therefore it is not surprising that sampling has shown the quality to be variable. Both Winstone and the Auckland Regional Council have surveyed undisturbed soils in the region to attempt to determine natural background levels of common contaminant substances. Comparison of these levels with delivered fill shows that a high proportion of delivered materials can be regarded as mildly contaminated. Therefore the term 'cleanfill' is, in the Auckland region at least, a misnomer and the term 'managed fill' has been adopted.Historically and presently the only control on quality of 'cleanfill' has been some visual inspection. This leaves the fill operator open to potential liability for creating a contaminated site. Implementation of controls at WinstoneÆs operations has progressed slowly, over some ten years. This is mainly due to the perception that mobility of contaminants within and out of the landfill will be very limited because of the near-neutral pH and abundance of clay minerals in the fill. The methods of control and results of environmental risk assessments at WinstoneÆs Puketutu Island Quarry will be briefly described.
