The evaluation of historical goldfields has been common over the past 15 years, reflecting changing economic conditions, improvements in knowledge and technology and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins, which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold, have variable geometry and architecture and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation, since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. Mine records include documents such as plans, sections, reports, news cuttings, production tabulations, etc. A major advantage for the modern explorer is the capability of computer modelling to display this data in 3D. Historical records can give the explorer substantial information on various deposit characteristics, not least grade and geological continuity, geometry and architecture, mineralogy, metallurgical properties, bulk density and ground conditions. From an evaluation perspective, historical records can be used to support a Mineral Resource estimate, though its application will depend upon the quality and quantity of the data and judgement of the Competent Person. Effectively used, historical records can reduce geological uncertainty and focus evaluation efforts û thus reducing project risk.

"Automatic flotation control in varying degrees of sophistication is practiced at a number of concentrators throughout the world. Practically, the variable conditions in the flotation circuit and the difficulty in maintaining accurate instrumentation information all add to the complexity of automatic control.Further development at the Kidd Creek concentrator has resulted in a 3075 mtpd copper flotation circuit capable of running twenty-four hours a day under the direct control of an optimizing supervisory computer.Three main streams, continuously monitored by an XRF analyser, supply circuit information to the optimizing computer. Circuit efficiency calculations (from smelter contract terms) and target setpoints allow the computer to determine the economic optimum direction to move the circuit based on the grade/recovery relationship. Circuit manipulation is accomplished by precise pumping of collector and frother reaqents together with accurate control of flotation bank pulp levels. The former uses computer controlled diaphragm pumps and the latter is achieved by control loops utilizing a float type level transmitter, variable position dart plugs and a process computer working to setpoints determined by the optimizing computer.The development of a fully automated flotation circuit is by no means complete, but increased knowledge and major hardware improvements have allowed its progression to a higher level of sophistication."

In the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program, the magnitude of the abutment loading adjacent to a gob area is calculated using an ?abutment angle? concept. The extent of the abutment loading is determined solely as a function of depth from an empirically derived equation. In the recommended calibration method for LaModel, it was believed that the empirical equations for calculating the magnitude and extent of the abutment load, as used in ARMPS, were the best available methods for determining these critical overburden loading values. Therefore, similar calculations were implemented in the LaModel calibration method. However, the latest in situ stress measurements of abutment loading performed in the United States and Australia have shown that there can be significant deviations in the measured abutment magnitude and extent as compared to the predicted values from the empirical formulas used in ARMPS and LaModel. It seems reasonable that the overburden geology, depth, extraction panel width, and mining height should have a significant effect on the extent and magnitude of the abutment load. However, the current empirical formulas do not incorporate many of these significant parameters into determining the abutment load on the pillars. In this paper, stress measurements from US and Australian mines were back-analyzed by using analytical and numerical methods to investigate the measured abutment extent and loading. Ultimately, it was determined that the original empirical abutment extent formula in conjunction with the original ALPS square-decay stress distribution function was supported by the case histories in this paper. Also, for depths less than 900 ft, the average 21° abutment angle was supported by the case histories; however, at depths greater than 900 ft, the abutment angle was found to be significantly less than 21° and should be calculated with a new proposed equation.

Mineral production was of little significance in the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a world-ranked producer of any mineral commodity during 1977. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited; however, reserves were sufficient to allow for much greater production, Economically, Bangladesh made some progress in 1977-782 in its struggle against poverty, underdevelopment, and rapidly increasing population. The gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8%, mainly owing to a 13% increase in food grain production, the key economic indicator in this highly agricultural nation. GDP at current prices dropped slightly in Fiscal Year (FY) 1976.77 to $6.6 billion3 and rose to $7.2 billion in FY 1977.78. The population rose from 81 million in FY 1975-76 to about 85 million in FY 1977-78, resulting in an increase of per capita GDP from $83 to $85 during the same period. The high annual population growth rate, over 3% in 1976 and about 2.8% in 1977, was recognized by the Government as the main problem facing the country. Average density was 525 people per square kilometer. A similar density would have the entire world population living within the continental United States.

PACMANUS is an actively-forming seafloor analogue of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide orebodies, situated on the crest of an andesite-dacite-rhyodacite ridge overlying rifted older arc crust in a back-arc basin. Hydrothermal deposits range from Mn-oxide crusts to Cu-Zn-rich massive sulfide mounds and chimneys containing significant Au and Ag. Preliminary data suggest a substantial magmatic component to fluids and metal sources, and we speculate that PACMANUS is the cap to a complete hydrothermal system including subvolcanic and intrusive-related mineralisation.

Implementing new technologies in industrial operations entails the challenge of measuring the improvements gained by the applied technology. Nevertheless, it is absolutely essential to assess the technical and economic benefits in objective and comprehensible numbers to create a platform for further management decisions. Underground coal mines are characterized by numerous, quite complex procedures which make it difficult to determine the specific economic benefit of a new machine, technique, or method. In the OPTI-MINE Project funded by the European Union?s RFCS programme, five underground coal mines applied the latest information and communication technologies (ICTs) to improve efficiency, mine safety, occupational health, and environmental im-pacts. An integral part of the project is the assessment of these technologies by using key performance indicators (KPIs). The paper will describe some examples of the selected KPIs and the preliminary findings.

"The link between ore texture and mineral liberation has previously been established at a microscopic scale. To construct ore texture models that can be used in mining applications requires this relationship to be retained at a significantly larger scale. This is initially dealt with by finding a basic set of microtextures that form the elements of the ore textures at the next larger mesoscopic scale, simulating these mesotextures at a fine scale, then changing the support of the mesotexture simulations to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. Thus, a mutually exclusive and exhaustive set of spatially locatable mesotextures can be used to fully characterize the metallurgical properties of in situ material.A method that generates expected distributions of mesotextures for any mining block size or shape is proposed, and includes: (1) characterizing the spatial correlation of the set of mesotextures with a single covariance function; (2) generating multiple simulations of mesotextures at a fine scale; and (3) using the simulations at a fine scale to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. A case study, using the George Fisher sediment-hosted base metal deposit in Queensland Queensland, Australia, is developed to demonstrate the proposed methodology as well as show the inadequacy of off-the-shelf approaches.Mining-scale texture models can be used to improve the in situ discrimination of ore from waste by exploiting the joint spatial variability of grades and textures to quantify the expected metal recovery of in situ material, then calculate local marginal cut-off grades. An artificial case study is presented to demonstrate the changes in ore/waste selection when considering ore texture models compared to constant metal recoveries."

A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

Many techniques that are used to characterize and monitor microbial populations associated with sulfide mineral bioleaching require the cultivation of the organisms on solid or liquid media. Chemolithotrophic species, such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, or thermophilic chemolithotrophs, such as Acidianus brierleyi and Sulfolobus solfataricus can grow quite slowly, requiring weeks to complete efforts to identify and quantify these microbes associated with bioleach samples. Real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assays in which DNA targets are amplified in the presence of fluorescent oligonucleotide primers, allowing the monitoring and quantification of the amplification reactions as they progress, provide a means of rapidly detecting the presence of microbial species of interest, and their relative abundance in a sample. This presentation will describe the design and use of such assays to monitor acidophilic microbes in the environment and in bioleaching operations. These assays provide results within 2-3 hours, and can detect less than 100 individual microbial cells.

These investigations were conducted to determine conditions for recovery of nickel and copper from Funter Bay, Alaska, sulfide ore and recovery of nickel from nickel-silicate ore, Nickel Mountain, Riddle, Oreg. Samples of Funter Bay cupriferous and nickeliferous pyrrhotite ore, were treated by beneficiation, roasting, electric smelting of roasted are for matte production, chlorination, leaching, and sulfatizing roasting with subsequent leaching. Funter Bay and Nickel Mountain ores were smelted together to produce matte. Total sulfide flotation, followed by magnetic separation of the tailings to recover entrained nickel-bearing pyrrhotite, resulted in the highest nickel recovery in beneficiation tests on Funter Bay are. Overall beneficiation resulted in recovery of 98.5 percent of the copper and 95.4 percent of the nickel in the concentrate that contained 3.5 percent copper and 1.7 percent nickel.

Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. The feasibility of redesigning and adapting the all- secondary-explosive, low-voltage, electric safe detonator for use as a delay detonator has been demonstrated. Experimental results have shown that operational characteristics can be adjusted to allow direct competition of safe delay detonators with commercial delay blasting caps. Five different experimental delay period models have been developed and tested. Test results are given and results are evaluated. Subsequent simplified and improved designs for practical and economical mass production are described. Design concepts to meet Bureau of Mines voltage withstand, incendivity, and spark sensitivity requirements are included. Recommendations are made for experimental procedures to ready the safe delay detonator for mass production and extensive use in mining and other industries.

This paper discusses the trials and tribulations of obtaining Velocity of Detonation (VOD) readings in small diameter blast holes in an underground mine. Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) obtained a time-domain reflectometer (TDR) type VOD monitoring unit. Purchase of the VOD monitor was justified on verifying explosives performance used in Montana Tech’s practical underground mining class and provide a teaching aid for the school’s rock fragmentation class. Before demonstrating the unit to students, we figured we better learn how to use it first so we give the students an appropriate experience. Our first learning was in obtaining the correct coaxial cable for the VOD monitor and how to properly terminate the cable. Once the cable was on-site and terminated, VOD testing could commence. Use of the VOD monitor was tested underground in small diameter holes (1.5-inch, 38 millimeter) pneumatically loaded with ANFO. After a few failed trials, and follow-up discussions with the supplier, VOD readings were obtained for the ANFO loaded holes. Additional readings were obtained for a pre-split product and detonating cord to satisfy our curiosity that the unit was performing as specified by the manufacturer. This paper will share our learnings in the hopes that others can benefit.

"INTRODUCTION Of the phosphate rock deposits of the United States that are being exploited actively at present, the land-pebble area in Florida is the largest producer. In recent years the land-pebble district, in Polk and Hillsborough Counties, has produced about 80 per cent of the raw phosphate rock that has supplied the requirements of the several national industries based on this essential commodity.In the land-pebble deposits sizes finer than 16 to 22 mesh are below the commercial limit in phosphate content, and washing-plant practice has been directed to the recovery of the coarser material. Recently, more extensive control of the washery plan has resulted in the saving of additional amounts of phosphate, the loss of which had been considered unavoidable. However, strict requirements of the trade regarding the lowest acceptable grade of phosphate rock prevent the inclusion of more than a very small proportion of the low-grade phosphatic sands with the washery output of phosphate roe:. Further advances in practice resulting in larger recoveries of phosphate can only be effected by the application of processes that are based on other principles than merely a difference of particle size. Research is be conducted actively along these lines by the industry and by cooperating agencies.Flotation has been studied for several years by the International Agricultural Corporation and its allied company, the Phosphate Recovery Corporation. Konkola No 3 shaft experienced severe mining induced stress and time related deterioration in ground conditions in an area where an over-cut and bench (OCB) mining method was used to extract a shallow dipping wide orebody. This caused an unacceptable risk for safe mining operations to sustain the required levels of production. After a review of the conditions it was decided to change the mining method to CASCADE to recover ore in the affected area and modify the OCB method and use a modified over-cut and bench method (MOCB) for new mining sections. This paper describes the geotechnical criteria included to derive the mining standards for the MOCB. The geotechnical risks are identified and taken into account to develop stope design parameters, stoping sequences and support requirements. A monitoring programme to assess conditions as mining progresses is also discussed.

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993. The design and scheduling of open pit operations are consistent problems encountered by the surface mining industry. Numerous techniques and algorithms have been developed to assist the mining engineer in the creation of optimum development strategies. Virtually all the practical techniques that have been produced have concentrated on one of the aspects (limit definition or scheduling) at the expense of the other. It has long been recognised, however, that the two activities are intrinsically linked and thus solving either problem independently of the other can only ever produce sub-optimal results as a whole. This has been termed the "circular reasoning problem". It has also been recognised that, for all practical-sized situations, solving both problems simultaneously is virtually impossible using conventional techniques due to the massive size of the search space involved. A technique is presented which is based on a self-learning genetic algorithm, which provides a combined pit limit and extraction schedule simultaneously in order to maximise the NPV (net present value) of the extraction. The theory is developed in two-dimensions and a number of examples of its application are presented. It is proposed that this approach is a highly efficient, heuristic technique offering the potential to transcend the circular reasoning difficulties of separate pit limit and extraction scheduling systems. Extension of the technique into three-dimensions and its application to realistic problem sizes are discussed

Recovery of Precious Metals from Chloride Solution by Magnetite The development of environmental-friendly lixiviants as alternatives to cyanide and the increasing recycling activities to recover precious metals from waste materials have prompted researchers to find efficient methods and alternative sorbents to recover precious metals, such as Au and Pt, from aqueous solutions. This study explored the use of magnetite (Fe3O4) as a sorbent to recover Au and Pt from chloride solutions. Magnetite is a semiconductor and has the capability of transferring electrons both within the solid state and across the solid-liquid interface and has the ability to reduce metal species on its surface. The sorption of AuCl4- and PtCl62- from NaCl solution on commercial grade magnetite powder was investigated by batch-sorption experiments. The effects of pH, contact time, NaCl concentration and precious metal concentration on the recovery were studied. Sorption experiments revealed that magnetite exhibited selectivity towards other metals with the strongest affinity for Au. Both Au and Pt recoveries showed similar pH dependence curves, with peaks at pH 6 - 7. At this pH range, a maximum of 4.4 ¦mol Au/g Fe3O4 and 3.0 ¦mol Pt/g Fe3O4 were recovered after 24 h at an initial metal concentration of 0.05 mol/m3. Increasing the initial precious metal concentration increased the Au and Pt uptake amount by magnetite. It was also observed that the recovery decreased with high NaCl concentrations. The SEM images of the magnetite particles after the treatment showed that gold, which was confirmed by the EDX analysis, agglomerated and were deposited on Fe3O4 surface.
