THE chemistry of clays and shales has been assuming increasing importance in the petroleum industry, and two factors have greatly influenced this trend. The first has been the growing evidence that the marine shales are source beds, and that the petroleum compounds have migrated to the sand reservoirs overlying or underlying these shales: the second has been the demand for drilling fluids better adapted to penetrate these marine shales without difficulty and expense. ORIGIN AND. GENERAL COMPOSITION OF CLAYS AND SHALES Clays, shales and- surface soils are all closely related materials. They are mixtures of finely divided compounds formed during the weathering of the solid crust of the earth. Their nature is essentially colloidal; that is, their behavior is determined by the state of division of the materials and the surface reactions of the smallest grains. Many of their chemical changes affect only the exposed areas and do not involve the interior of the grains of matter. The extent of these reactions is more nearly proportional to the area of the substances than to their mass, therefore it is possible for a small amount of a material in an extremely fine state of division to completely dominate the character of the mixture. More than 83 per cent of the crust of the earth is composed of three elements-oxygen, silicon and aluminum. Consequently, the corrosion products of the crust are predominantly aluminosilicates, or compounds of aluminum, silicon and oxygen. If we add the compounds of six elements-iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and hydrogen-more than 98 per cent of the crust, has been accounted for. These six elements, together with the first three, also appear in soils, clays and shales.

THE record of the development of physical metallurgy since the founding of this Institute embraces by far the greater part of physical metallurgy as this subject is recognized today. Yet it is not to be supposed that the metallurgist interested in the properties and behavior of solid metals at the beginning of this period was without important and even fundamental information. He had an empirical knowledge of the behavior of solid metals which extended backward into prehistoric times and he had the early beginnings of many of the chapters in the science of metals. Industry was burgeoning in many directions, for methods had been developed, especially in the manufacture of steel that provided materials in extremely large tonnages, permitting applications of metallic materials on a very widespread scale. These multitudinous new uses of metals created an increased interest in the behavior of metals, and provided the basis for the rapid development of a science of metals. Indeed, the development of science generally that accompanied the industrial revolution reached a flood tide toward the end of the century, furnishing the metallurgist basic principles in chemistry, physics, mechanics, and crystallography that would shortly be extensively applied to metallic behavior. In this account, the early developments in the wide metallurgical field will be traced, in order that the status of physical metallurgy in 1871, when this Institute was founded, may be clearly seen. The subject of metallurgy in antiquity has been written upon frequently and at length. We shall here no more than indicate the main features that we need to define the position in 1871 and to provide a proper background for discussing subsequent developments. THE art of natural-gas compressing is now over 25 years old, and has grown at practically the same rate as the increase in domestic natural-gas consumers. There are now over 200 natural-gas compressing stations in North America, aggregating more than 320,000 hp. of compressor capacity and representing a property value of more than $22,000,000, and compressing more than 85 per cent. of all the gas used. The age and magnitude of the art make it evident that the use of gas compressors is a recognized integral part and universal custom of the natural-gas business. The public also is not without its rights and vital interests in this problem. Approximately 1,700,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in North America are dependent upon gas compressors for their natural-gas service. That is, if the use of compressors were to be prohibited, the majority of these consumers would be unable to secure adequate natural-gas service. Each consumer represents between four and five persons, and it therefore follows that the comfort and well-being-as far as natural-gas service is concerned-of at least 8,000,000 persons would be affected if the use of natural-gas compressors should be prohibited. These 1,700,000 consumers have invested, in services, house piping, fixtures, and appliances, an average of about $90 each, or an aggregate of $153,000,000, which is much more than the companies' investment in gas compressors. Furthermore, in all cases where the rate paid by the consumers is fair to the gas company-considering the value of the service rendered by the gas company-the consumers are entitled to continued service and protection of the investment they have made on the faith that the gas service would be continued in the future.

The technologist who has devoted much attention to the foundry-business will perhaps have noticed that the present scientific development of foundry-practice is in a condition similar to that of the steel-business some twenty years ago. In many cases chemistry is looked upon with suspicion, and the old cutand-try-methods are still in vogue, especially in the smaller foundries. The larger works have laboratories and more extensive means for applying science, and have devoted considerable time and attention to the improvement of foundry-practice. This is more especially true in the East, although in the West there are numerous firms devoting considerable attention to improving their metllods through the application of chemistry to work in the iron-foundry. It is hardly necessary to dwell extensively upon the effects of the different metalloids associated with iron, in pig- or castiron, in the way they are given in most text-books. The writer has thought proper to consider more particularly new developments in eupola-practice, particularly those pertinent to the discussion of the physics of cast-iron. In this connection some new ideas which recent practice has developed will be mentioned, and some results of practical tests along the same line will be described. Yet it has been deemed advisable also, by way of introduction, to outline the effects of the metalloids as they are described in most text-books, without going into detail. The question is sometimes asked, What is the most important element governing the quality of cast-iron 'for any particular purpose ? The writers have no new system and no new principle of taxation to propose. The general subject of taxation is as old as governments are and as familiar to taxpaying Americans as the general thesis on the inalienable rights of man. We believe, therefore, following the committee of the National Tax Association, that improvement in the general conditions of taxation, including mine taxation, maybe brought about mainly through a better adjustment of known and tried principles and methods of taxing to modern complex forms of property and income, and that not much is to be expected from abandonment of experience for new ways and means, methods and principles, should anything new be discovered, which in our opinion is very doubtful. The committee referred to has constructed the general framework of its Model System of State and Local Taxation1 on familiar forms of taxing, by eliminating some that ' have proved bad, suggesting improvements in others, and adopting the best, leaving plenty of room for the accommodation of the general plan to the varying conditions of taxation in the several states. Unfortunately, the taxation of mines is dismissed by the committee with the statement that the subject has been reassigned for further investigation and report by a special sub-committee, frankly recognizing that the peculiar difficulties of this phase of the subject require special study and investigation. Much may be hoped for from the labor of this sub-committee if the problem is approached from the viewpoint of recommendations already published. In this paper, the writers state their opinion on some of the broader aspects of mine taxation with too little attention to the grounds on which they rest. Contrary to inclination space requirements compel them to resort to summary statements without adequate discussion for a satisfactory presentation of the whole subject. All they can do is to qualify the witnesses and record the testimony. MANY fires have occurred in the mines of Butte in recent years, and while all have been of a serious nature, simply because they were mine fires, six of them have been especially dangerous in respect to loss of life and property, and the expense of extinguishing or controlling them. It is not my intention to discuss the relative merits of methods used in fighting these different fires because the conditions under which they occurred varied in each case, and it was not always advisable to expend the large sum of money necessary to actually extinguish them if they could he bulk-headed off from the rest of the mine. It is needless to say that everything possible has been done to check all fires at the beginning, but without success in some cases; and it has then become necessary to bulkhead all connections to them, in which state several now exist. The mine fires of Butte, or fires in any mine, may be divided into two classes, namely: Those occurring in accessible workings, and those occurring in inaccessible workings; because these two conditions govern to the greatest extent the methods of fighting fires. Accessibility and in-accessibility in the case of mine fires concern not only new open workings and old closed workings, respectively, but also the condition of the ventilation in and about those places. When a fire is accessible at the start it should not be difficult to confine it to a small area and extinguish it in a relatively short time, but when it is impossible to actually reach a fire in old filled, abandoned workings, or there is no opening by which the gases may be conducted away from the fire zone, then the time consumed in changing those conditions permits the fire to increase to such an extent that it is a long, hard fight to overcome it.

Results of a primary stress measurement investigation conducted on the 1100 copper ore body of the Mt. Isa mine, Mt. Isa, Queens., Australia, are presented in this chapter. The investigation started in September 1965, after discussion with the engineering staff at Mt. Isa, and consisted of both underground or in-situ tests at Mt. Isa and laboratory tests on Mt. Isa rocks and stress measurement techniques at the Australian National University in Canberra. Underground stress measurements were made in and adjacent to the 1100 copper ore body. The primary stress measurement site was in J 32 west crosscut on 14 Level. Approximate coordinates on the mine grid are 3000 north, 1650 east. The vertical depth below ground surface at this point is approximately 2180 ft. Some preliminary measurements were made in M 30 west crosscut on 13 Level, coordinates 3000 north, 2000 east, depth beneath the surface approximately 1990 ft. Additional flatjacks were installed on 11 Level in L 30 west crosscut, coordinates 3000 north, 2200 east, and depth beneath the surface approximately 1580 ft. All of the sites were in rock that from a mining engineering viewpoint must be considered extremely sound. The 13 and 14 Level crosscuts were approximately 14 ft on a side and nearly square and the 11 Level crosscut was approximately 10 ft on a side. All of the crosscuts had been standing open for several years and no artificial support of any type was necessary. Extraction openings hundreds of feet on a side have been made in this mine in similar rock and these have remained open also without additional support (see Davies 1 for a recent summary of mining techniques and conditions). THE subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is confined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years passed have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjustment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less power, steel and maintenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representative concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion. Circulating Load In this particular paper it seems advisable to deal with the classification phases of the work that to a major extent govern the success of any closed-circuit grinding unit. In determining what kind of pourer should be adopted for the works of the Moctezuma Copper Co. at Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, certain considerations imposed by local conditions had to be taken into account. Water.—During most of the year the water-supply is abundant for all purposes, but it dwindles rapidly when the dry season sets in, reaching a minimum flow which is entirely undergrouad. It was evident, that with the greatest care in keeping down the unavoidable loss of water in milling and smelting, these operations and hence the capacity of the works mould ultimately be limited for about two months of the year by the small watersupply available at the period of minimum flow. Transportation.—The nearest railway terminus was in Arizona, at the international boundary-line; and the price of supplies at that point would be enhanced at Nacozari by the additional cost of a 90-mile wagon-haul. During the rainy season, transport to Nacozari was much impeded, and at times made impossible, by the condition of the roads. Hence, to insure continuous operation at the works, it would be necessary to provide for hauling the year's supplies, including fuel for power and coke for smelting, in less than eleven months. In other words, the average freight delivered daily at the works should be at least 10 per cent. more than the average daily consumption. For moderate quantities of freight, pack-carriage by burros is astonishingly cheap. But it has a capacity-limit which is generally very soon reached. A 200-lb. load, and 10 miles a day, 5 with and 5 without load, is the full capacity of a burro. This means one burro per ton-mile of the round trip; and,

INTRODUCTION. IN India the production of mica, which in other countries is of very minor importance, is one of the staple, long established industries, and ranks high in the statistics of mineral products. Nearly two-thirds of the mica of commerce comes from India. The Indians have used mica for glazing and decorative purposes through many centuries. About 14,000 men are employed in and about the mines, and the indigenous and primitive mode of mining is still followed; but, by reason of the exhaustion of the surface supply hitherto won without intelligence or capital, it will not be many years before the present interesting and casual methods will be replaced by a less archaic and more profitable system. India on the whole has little mineral wealth, but the unique resources of its mica fields, cheap labor, and favorable natural conditions render it unlikely that any other country can ever more than temporarily contest her leadership in the production of this one minor but essential mineral. Mica plays a small but indispensable role in a variety of fields of dissimilar application. Its use and value depend upon characteristics which different kinds of mica have in varying degrees, each kind being adapted to 'its own special purpose. Its well-known characteristics of transparency, flexibility, elasticity, toughness, high dialectric, strength, perfect flatness; ease of splitting into thin films, ability to stand high heat and sudden changes in temperature, give it value in many industries. No other substance, natural or artificial, has this combination of qualities. The oldest use of mica is in glazing. Polonis,and R Taggart (Uuivevsity of Washington)—Dispersion hardening in titanium-copper alloys is of particular interest to us in view of our current research activities in phase transformations in this system. We should like to raise questions concerning several points in the paper. The flow sheet for fabrication and heat treatment (Authors' Fig. 2) indicates that 0.045 in sheet is treated in air for a period of 30 min at 1625' F. Were any surface coatings used to reduce oxygen contamination at this stage? One might ask the same question about the 8-hr annealing at 1400F. Contamination during fabrication and heat treatment of such thin sections could be considerable without some protection. Although the authors state that no analyses were made, they note that contamination masks the distinction between base strengths of the different alloys. In this connection, what fabrication and heat-treatment procedures were used in obtaining the comparison specimens of unalloyed titanium? It would seem that oxygen contamination must cast doubt on the reliability of the proposed strength-mean free path relationship deduced from the data (Authors' Fig. 5). It is usual to evaluate dispersion hardening on the basis of yield strength rather than ultimate tensile strength, and accordingly we have replotted the authors' Fig. 1 to include yield strength. The yield strength data do not justify a discontinuity of 3 p at either 70" or 1000 OF. Can the authors substantiate their conclusion 1) with additional evidence? Otherwise it seems that they have succeeded only in pointing out the possibility of a linear relationship between yield strength (or Uts) and the logarithm of the nleall free path, comparable with that demonstrated for iron-carbon alloys (Authors' Ref. 2). Work in our own laboratories has shown that the hardness of the phase Ti,Cu is 235 Vpn, and that of a 1.5 pct (at.) (2 pct wt) supersaturated solid solution of copper in titanium is 190 Vpn. This small difference in hardness would suggest that Ti2Cu should not be a very effective dispersion-hardening phase. D. N. Williams, R. W. Wood, H. R Ogden, RI. ROBERT J. ANDERSON, Cleveland, Ohio (communication to the Secretary *).-The paper by Messrs. Bellis and Hardy was interesting to me and has led me to make a few remarks concerning some of the points brought out. The question of employing correct hardening temperatures is one that is sadly neglected, particularly in many large plants that forge and treat their machine tools for private use. As is most aptly remarked in this paper, "The custom of using one, high-speed temperature for all tools is very poor practice;" still, such practice is more common than otherwise. An instance came to my attention some time ago, in connection with some work with the standardization of high-speed steels for machine tools, where there were no less than six different brands of alloy steels being used for machine tools such as lathe, shaper, planer, boring mill and cutters of like nature. All of these different steels received identical heat and forging treatment-or at least that was the aim of the tool hardener. That the results were highly unsatisfactory goes without saying. That the hardening department of many plants is conducted on a rule-of-thumb fashion is the reason for a great deal of the trouble and disappointment which seems to be the lot of many tool-steel users. Exceedingly crude execution is the rule rather than the exception, and it is no small wonder that the results are as good as they sometimes happen to be. It would seem that at the present price of alloy steels the subject should receive a closer scrutiny by purchasers than it does. One not familiar with the workings of souse plants that disdain to lend an ear to scientific heat treatment would scarcely give credence to some of the methods employed, not only in the treatment of the steel but also in its selection and purchase. Heating for hardening should be conducted under close pyrometric control only after the correct hardening temperature has been determined.

In the zeal for opening up new ore-bodies, or for extracting the ore from attractive bodies already opened up, we very often lose sight of the fact, that, after all, the operation of a mine is a business proposition, pure and simple, and, for the best working-results, should be treated upon a strict business basis. Of course, in every mine of consequence, a record is kept of expenditures and receipts, and such glittering generalities as " gross receipts," " net receipts," " mining expenses," and a per cent. profit," can be told to the cent; but does this record show economy of management, as compared either with the same record of other months, or with the record of other mines of the same class ? Moreover, if such a record shows that the cost of mining is high, does it in any way enable the manager to put his finger on the leakage ? Does it necessarily follow that a mine which makes a profit of, say, 40 per cent. on 25-dollar ore, is doing less economical mining than one which saves 60 per cent. on 80-dollar ore ? Of course the figures in the latter case look the more attractive; yet when it comes to the point of saving everything which can be saved, and of cutting down expenses to the lowest possible cost of operation, the former mine is doubtless on the firmer and more economical financial basis. But as to the relative merits of the system of mining in the two cases, nothing could be decided without a basis of detailed comparison ; if one system is more economical than the other, why is it so, and wherein does the advantage lie ? This can be shown only by keeping accurately the cost of each mining operation. And no matter how dissimilar two mines may be in character and operation, yet there are a few general heads common to all mining operations. ONE of the advantages presented by electric drive in many classes of work is the ease with which the electric motor can be controlled automatically. In a large number of cases certain features of the control are automatic-for example, the rate of acceleration may be limited automatically or the equipment may be stopped automatically at the limit of travel-but the equipment is started and ordinarily is stopped by hand. . In other cases the motion of the machinery is utilized to start, control the: speed, and stop the motor automatically, independently of any operator. A considerable proportion of the large mine hoists now in use have certain automatic features, particularly protective devices against over-winding, and, in some classes of electric hoists, devices for preventing excessive acceleration or retardation. The large automatic hoists discussed in this paper, however, are completely automatic, i.e., capable of snaking their trips without the presence of an operator at the control levers. According to circumstances, various advantages may be obtained by automatic control, chief of which are decreased power consumption', increased precision and safety of operation, and decreased, cost of attendance. The first step in the analysis of a prospective automatic mine hoist is to determine whether automatic operation is feasible at all. If men are to be hoisted, or levels changed, the attention of an operator is required for these purposes; but tinder some conditions it may be entirely practicable and advantageous to build the equipment so that, while provision is made for hoisting mien or changing levels, ore can be hoisted automatically from, any one level. If, however, an operator's attention is required every few minutes for changing levels, handling men or drills, or other work requiring hand control, it is obvious that automatic operation between times will not be of any, practical benefit.

The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation system is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside; it must move men in and out of the mine; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served : 1) Face Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production. POWDERED nonmetallic minerals and rocks of many different types are used extensively in industry for incorporation in compositions and manufactured products The term "mineral filler" is commonly employed to designate a material that is used for a specific purpose but not as an essential or reactive component Such a definition is not without objections, and it is indeed difficult to define fillers in any fully satisfactory manner, since the term has come to have so many different meanings and to cover such a wide range of uses. A filler is defined, for the purposes of this chapter, as a substantially inert material not specifically employed as a reactive or essential component, the primary function of which is to modify the properties or processing of a composition of matter or fabricated article Emery1 has emphasized that fillers change the properties of the product but are themselves unchanged in compounding or use The term "filler" appears to be rather general when referring to usages m bituminous compositions, rubber, composition floorings, fertilizers, plastics, textile finishes, and some others. In paper manufacture, in the paint industry and with insecticides, other terms are frequently employed, as is indicated, herinafter By placing emphasis on the function of the material used in modifying the properties of the composition or article, it is believed that a more useful classification of filler products and their applications may be derived. FUNCTIONS OF MINERAL FILLERS All of the manifold functions of mineral fillers cannot be listed in a summary review. A survey of the uses for these materials, however, shows that in nearly all cases the powders are employed to modify the properties of a composition of matter or those of a fabricated article, or to perform some useful function In the manufacture of either. Restriction and proration of petroleum production have increased materially the difficulties attendant upon the estimation of reserves, particularly in large, "flush" fields. Such practices preclude the use of decline or other curves, from which, under capacity production conditions formerly prevalent, much could be learned as to the ultimate recovery to be expected from a given field or lcase therein. In restricted fields that would produce at many times the low rate allowed by the regulations in force if allowed to flow without restraint, one is forced to use other information than production performance to predict the volume of oil recoverable. Examples are: at Kettleman Hills, California; the Conroc, Van and East Texas fields, Texas; the Iowa field, Louisiana. It is beyond the scope of this paper to apply a definite method to the determination of the reserves in any actual field, therefore the discussion will be limited to a consideration of available methods and an enumeration of important factors governing the accuracy of such estimates. The problem is to determine not only oil in place but recoverable oil in place, for a given field or tract, which is complex and depends not only on the characteristics of the reservoir but also on the plan of development, the production allocation scheme, the rate of production and many other factors. Many data must necessarily be considered, weighed as to inportance, and assigned quantitative values. Estimates of recovery in prorated fields have been discussed by Brace', Shaw2, Snider3 and others. A STUDY of the ore to be treated should be the first step in deciding on a machine for crushing or grinding. Coarse crushing is practically confined to the jaw and the gyratory crushers, the large-size jaw type being often employed in large installations as a primary crusher, followed by the gyratory type for secondary reduction. In small plants where mine-run ore is reduced in a single step, either of these machines will do the work. In intermediate and fine grinding, various machines are used. The relative merit of the different types will be governed in no small measure by the size of the installation, the character of the ore to be reduced and the final product desired for subsequent treatment. It should be possible, nevertheless, with the data available, if properly classified, to arrive at an approximation of the relative efficiency of these intermediate and fine grinders. It should be possible, also, to determine the economic grinding range of the different machines. With this in mind, it will be the object of this article to indicate, in rough outline, how the data available may be classified, rather than to attempt to discuss any particular practice and compare the results with other practices. Conclusions or generalizations can not be drawn without an exhaustive classification of data; in fact, many vital points will have to be determined by additional experiments which can be carried on most advantageously in the laboratory. The expense en-tailed in such experiments would be worth while if the data obtained should lead to definite conclusions that would aid in standardizing and simplifying grinding practice.

When mining operations were first instituted in the mines of the Miami Copper Co., at Miami, Ariz., the relatively hard character of the ground in the western section of the property made it seem advisable to use a wide shrinkage stope and pillar system. The system as finally evolved was applied to the mining of 2,300,000 tons of ore by the use of stopes and pillars each 50 ft. in width. Development, mining and extraction of this reserve has been continuously in progress since 1910, and the final stages of extraction are now reached. A complete survey of all phases of this system can therefore be made. Modification in working methods was obviously necessary, and the system to be described is believed to be typical of the best features. Development The preliminary work had three main objectives: The opening of a haulage level, the construction of a drawing-off level, and the driving of sublevels for use in stoping. In addition to these, some extra sublevel drifting was necessary to determine exactly the boundaries of the orebody, the general outline having been determined by churn drilling. This development was based on the requirements of stopes 50 ft. wide, with pillars 50 ft. wide between each stope. The length of these units varied from 200 to 500 ft.. Haulage Level The tramming level was 50 ft. below the floor of the stopes, and the tramming lines were run parallel with the long axis of the stopes. These lines were also beneath the middle of the stopes and pillars. Each line therefore served one stope or one pillar, this arrangement making it possible to load along an entire stope without switching or uncoupling. This advantage is apparent principally during the process of stoping when rapid drawing of excess broken ore is desirable. During the past four years the experimental work in coal washing carried on by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington has been devoted mainly to the development of special methods for the tabling of fine sizes of coals that are difficult to wash. One important outgrowth of this investigation has been the application of hindered-settling classification to coal tabling. Although used for many years in ore dressing, the term "classification" as used here may be new to many readers. It may be defined as the separation obtained when a bed of particles is held in a uniform state of suspension in an upward current of water, either continuous or pulsating, just sufficiently strong to keep the bed in a mobile condition. A common example of this type of separation is a jig in which there is no suction stroke. When the hindered-settling classifier is used with the coal-washing table, the fine-size raw coal, instead of being fed direct to tables, as is the prevailing practice, is first fed to the classifier and grouped, according to the rate of settling against the upward current of water, into perhaps six separate products. After dewatering, each of these except the sixth, a refuse product, is elevated to a seperate feed bin arid washed on a separate table. This paper gives a brief discussion of the basis for the use of hindered-settling classification of a table feed; a description of the experimental work; a comparison of the results obtained with and without classification; and a discussion of the application of the classifier in commercial coal washing.
