The U-Cr system is of the simple eutectic type with some solid solubility of chromium in r and ß uranium. The eutectic occurs at 20 atomic pet Cr and melts at 859°C. The maximum solubility of chromium in y uranium is 4 atomic pet at the eutectic temperature, and in ß uranium the solubility is estimated to be 1 atomic pet. y-ß and ß-a transformations were found to occur at 737°estimatedt° and 612°C respectively. DURING 1944 and 1945, the U-Cr constitution diagram was studied in this laboratory as a part of a research program on uranium metallurgy in the Manhattan Project, and the work was described in a Manhattan Project report issued in December 1945. This paper is based on that report, which has been declassified. Prior to this study, it had been shown by other Manhattan Project workers that the low Cr-U alloys could be quenched to retain the form of uranium. Experimental The uranium used in this work was massive metal prepared in this laboratory and contained less than 0.1 pct of other elements. The chromium was 200 mesh powder obtained from the A. D. McKay Co. and was found on analysis to be 99.5 pct Cr with 0.3 pct Fe the major impurity. Alloys, weighing 400 to 600 g, were prepared by induction heating the components to 1700°C in slip-cast ZrO, crucibles in a vacuum of 3x103 mm Hg. TO prevent too violent agitation of the melt by the induction field with subsequent crucible breakage and sample loss, the ZrO2 crucible was placed in a graphite crucible, which was surrounded by a layer of powdered carbon insulation 2 to 3 cm thick. Polished vertical sections of the alloys were examined microscopically to confirm their homogeneity. Heating and cooling curves were taken on the alloys by reheating them in ZrO, crucibles to 1200°C and inserting a mullite-protected chromel-alumel thermocouple into the melt by means of a slip seal in the vacuum head of the furnace. A recording potentiometer traced the curves which had a slope of from 3" to 6" per min. Samples of the alloys were prepared for metallo-graphic examination by conventional mechanical polishing techniques followed by an electrolytic polish in an ethylene glycol-phosphoric acid-ethyl alcohol bath. The structure of the alloys was brought out clearly by this procedure so that no further etching was required. Samples for chemical analysis were taken from drillings from the top, center, and bottom sections of the alloys. The uranium was determined by titra-tion with Ce(SO1)2, while the chromium was titrated with FeSO,; the uranium and chromium totaled at least 99.6 pct in all of the alloys prepared. X-ray samples were prepared by filing bulk specimens in a helium-filled glove box and annealing the resulting powder in a zirconium-gettered helium atmosphere. A 114.6 mm diam Debye-Scherrer camera and a Weyland nonsymmetrical self-focusing camera were used with filtered copper radiation to obtain the powder X-ray diffraction data. Results The data obtained in this study have been combined to construct the constitution diagram of the U-Cr system shown in Fig. 1 where the arrests observed in cooling curves are indicated by dots. The liquidus arrest was quite distinct in thermal data taken on alloys in the range 0 to 20 atomic pct Cr. The eutectic arrest was not observed in studies on the 2.5 and 4.5 pct Cr samples but appeared in the 7.5 pct samples, which suggested some solubility of chromium in y uranium. On quenching from 859 °C, the 2.5 pct sample showed but one phase while the 4.5 pct sample contained a small amount of the eutectic along the grain boundaries; see Figs. 2 and 3. From this the maximum solubility of chromium in r uranium has been set at 4 pct. X-ray studies on these samples showed that the r phase was not retained at room temperature by quenching, but in each case a pattern was observed .which has been identified with the ß phase of uranium. Thermal data show the y-ß transformation of uranium lowered to 737°C as a consequence of this solubility. On quenching from the ß range (660°C), precipitation of chromium in the primary uranium is observed in the 2.5 and 4.5 pct Cr samples (see Figs. 4 and 5),

The phenomenon of the change of volume of pressed powder compacts upon sintering is well known in the field of powder metallurgy. Depending upon the metal or metals involved and the pressure used in forming, a compact may, in the course of time of sintering at a given temperature, expand mono-tonically, contract monotonically, or first show a volume change of one sign followed by a change of the opposite sign. It is clearly desirable to have accurate knowledge of the magnitude and sign of the change in dimensions to be expected in any given case, both from the point of view of direct usefulness in the fabrication of parts by powder metallurgy, and from the longer range viewpoint of elucidating the fundamental mechanism of metallic sintering. The present study was therefore undertaken as a first step in acquiring systematic and reasonably quantitative knowledge of the change in density of metal powder compacts during sintering. For practical reasons, copper was selected as the material to be studied first, and its densification followed as a function of temperature and time of sintering in hydrogen and in vacuum. Experimental Procedure The copper powder used was that designated by the manufacturer (Metals Disintegrating Co., Elizabeth, N. J.) as MD-151. This powder was sifted through Tyler standard screens to separate the fraction having particle size range between 200 mesh and 325 mesh, and this fraction was used in all the subsequent work. Compacts weighing about 10 g were then pressed in a 1 in. diam round die, using a pressure of 20,000 psi throughout. Sintering was carried out in commercially built electric furnaces in which the resistance windings are so disposed as to produce a nearly uniform temperature along the axis of the furnace for a length of about 18 in. centrally located. In order to be able to sinter in a controlled atmosphere, a 2 in. stainless steel tubing was inserted in the furnace. Each end of the tube was cooled by a water jacket about 7 in. long, and closed with a rubber stopper. The hydrogen used for one series of specimens was purified as described in Ref. 1. For the other set, a pressure of about 0.5 mm Hg was maintained during sintering by a Welch Duo-Seal Pump. The specimens were heated on square trays made of stainless steel. In placing specimens in the trays, a thin even layer of powdered aluminum oxide was first sprinkled on the bottom of the tray. A copper guard disk about half the thickness of the specimen was then placed in the tray and covered with a second layer of alumina. The actual specimen was then set on the guard disk, and a final coat of alumina sprinkled over the specimen. This technique was evolved for sintering the specimens in such a way as to reduce the influence of unknown extraneous factors to a minimum. If the specimen is placed directly on the tray and sintered, it is found that the resulting shape is that of a frustum of a cone, rather than a section of a right circular cylinder, since friction with the tray prevents the bottom of the specimen from contracting at the same rate as the top. In the arrangement used in these experiments, the guard disk provided a support which shrank at the same rate as the specimen, and the alumina powder reduced to a minimum friction between guard disk and tray, and between specimen and guard disk. The procedure followed in sintering consisted of bringing the furnace to the required temperature, and then inserting the specimen into the central heated portion of the furnace tube in one of the two atmospheres used. At the end of the heating period, the specimen was cooled by bringing it into a portion of the furnace surrounded by a water jacket. These manipulations were carried out without opening the furnace, by means of rods which were attached to the trays and operated through a sliding seal in the rubber stopper. The progress of densification of the copper compacts was studied at 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, and 1800°F. At each of these temperatures, a specimen was allowed to sinter for each of the following time intervals: M, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 hr. The thickness and diameter of each specimen were measured with micrometers before and after sintering, and each was weighed on an analytical balance after sintering. Results The techniques described in the preceding section were found to give satisfactory results. The specimens were not detectibly warped after sintering, and were usually of uniform diameter (that is, truly round) to within 0.001 in., a very few showing a variation in diameter of ±0.002 in. I. L. Dillamore (University of Birmingham)—The different textures developed in various fcc metals have long awaited satisfactory explanation and it has now become clear that these differences are related to parallel differences in the deformation characteristics of the metals. Liu is correct, therefore, in seeking to account for the observed textures in terms of the flow mechanisms but I believe, for the reasons outlined below, that the particular interpretation of flow mechanisms proposed by Liu is open to substantial objections. By considering the forty-eight possible designations of the twelve octahedral slip systems found in fcc metals as distinct and separate deformation modes, Liu has fallen into the error of assuming that only positive glide dislocations associated with each system are present. In fact both positive and negative dislocations will be present and the only difference between for instance the systems B4 and B4' (in Liu's notation) is that under a stress of given sign the direction of motion of a dislocation is reversed on changing from B4 to B4'. For both orientations positive and negative dislocations will be present. In considering possible dislocation interactions it is, therefore, inadmissible to differentiate between R4 and R4' as Liu does. Liu considers those dislocation interactions which give the biggest reduction in energy to be the most favorable and neglects, on the grounds that they will form strong barriers to slip, interactions between dislocations with perpendicular Burgers vectors. Setting aside interactions between positive and negative dislocations of the same slip system, which must occur regardless of the combination of slip systems chosen, the biggest reduction in energy occurs for the Lomer-Cottrell interaction and it is Lomer-Cottrell barriers which are thought to provide the stronger dislocation obstacles. On the other hand the intersection of dislocations with perpendicular Burgers vectors is thought to be a low-energy process which contributes only a fairly small temperature-dependent part of the total work hardening. On this basis it seems doubtful whether the reduction in energy through possible dislocation interactions provides a reasonable criterion for choosing the operative slip systems. From the point of view of texture development it is unsatisfactory to ignore the slip rotations leading to an end position and to neglect to consider the stability of the chosen end point. It is also unsatisfactory to treat the two stress axes as interchangeable since, if the stress system is idealized as biaxial, one stress is compressive and the other is tensile. For the same reason the rotations of the two stress axes are not made compatible simply by assuming that the same slip directions are responsible for the rotations of the two stress axes. It is, in short, essential to treat the two stress axes as acting together on the same slip systems. Turning to the question of the difference between the copper-type and the brass-type texture, there now remains little doubt that the difference is attributable to differences in stacking-fault energy (y), as noted by Liu, but it is doubtful whether the temperature dependence of the texture in copper and in silver is due to increasing stacking-fault energy with increasing temperature. The results of Swann and Nutting42 cited by Liu were obtained in Cu-A1 alloys and the apparent increase in stacking-fault energy on raising the temperature may be influenced by short-range ordering. In pure metals such effects are absent and the only data available on the variation of y with temperature are those of Buhler et a1.43 for silver. They report a minimum at 200°C which does not fit the hypothesis put forward by Liu. It is much more likely that thermal activation of cross slip is important in determining which texture develops, as proposed by Dillamore and tors. These workers have proposed an explanation for the differences in observed texture among the fcc metals and the pole figures predicted consist of an orientation spread which is in better agreement with observation than the limited number of discrete orientations suggested by Liu. The theory of Dillamore and Roberts is also able to account for the differences between aluminum and copper which Liu still leaves unexplained. Y. C. Extensive geological work was initiated — and continues — when operations of the Iron Ore Co. of Canada commenced in the Labrador-New Quebec area. Such geological operations include: mapping, test pitting, drilling, underground workings, volume factor and structure tests, and the calculation of ore grades and tonnages. Details of such work are given. Development is carried sufficiently ahead of mining to provide reliable tonnage and grade estimates and allow final mine planning. In order to make full use of geology in mining operations, the pit engineer combines the duties of geologist and mining engineer. The iron deposits of the Knob Lake range are located in the central part of the Labrador peninsula, a territory nearly twice the size of Texas, which is bounded by Hudson Bay on the west, Hudson Strait on the north, the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the south. The mining district proper is about 1000 miles northeast of Toronto. A 360-mile railroad links this mining area to the port of Sept-Iles on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Schef-ferville, which is only a few miles from the open-pit mines, is the center of operations of the Iron Ore Co. of Canada. It has a population of nearly 5000. The nearest settlement is Labrador City, some 120 miles to the south, where this company is erecting a large plant for beneficiating its huge reserves of local low-grade iron ores. HISTORY The mineral possibilities of the area were recognized as early as the end of the last century, when A.P. LOW' of the Geological Survey of Canada made his famous trek across the Labrador Peninsula. After mapping several belts of iron formation, Lovr recommended that the area be thoroughly prospected for iron. In 1929, two well known Canadian geologists, J.E. Gill and U'.F. James, led a private expedition in central Labrador and discovered the first deposit of high-grade iron ore near what is now the Ruth Lake Mine. In 1936 the Labrador Mining and Exploration Co. was formed to 11ake over a prospecting concession of over 20,000 sq miles in central Labrador. An adjoining concession of 3900 sq miles in New Quebec was obtained in 1942 by Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, which had just Purchased the Labrador Co. The same year the M.A. Hanna Co. Purchased an interest in both exploration companies. From 1942 to 1950 extensive exploration was conducted by the Hollinger-Hanna technical staff to systematically appraise these vast concessions. More than 40 deposits of high grade ore were found and, by the end of 1950, the total ore reserves reached 418 million tons. In 1949 five American steel companies joined the Hollinger-Hanna interests and formed the Iron Ore Co. of Canada. Financing and full-scale construction were decided upon in 1950. This included the construction of a 360-mile railroad through very difficult terrain, the erection of two hydroelectric plants, the installation of terminal port facilities at Sept-IIes, the building of a modern town-site at Schefferville, the construction of crushing and screening plants, and the preparation of deposits for mining. Ore was first shipped in July 1954. Total open-pit mine production to date is 66 million long tons of direct-shipping ore. GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING The above achievements would not have been possible without irtegrated teamwork of people of diverse skills and extensive use of geology. In their paper on the role of geologists in the development of this iron ore field, (Gustafson and Moss1 rightly emphasized the difficulties facing the early workers in the area. In an uninhabited land with no roads or railroads and no navigable rivers leading to the interior, everything had to be flown in. It was not until 1948 that aerial photographs and adequate base maps became available. In spite of these and other difficulties, an impressive amount of field work has been done since 1942. AS an outgrowth of its spodumene recovery operation at Kings Mountain, N. C., Foote Mineral Co. has been recovering a heavy mineral by-product. Foote leased this idle plant in 1951, reactivated it, using a new spodumene recovery process, and purchased plant and properties in October 1951. While the operation at Kings Mountain is primarily concerned with the production of spodumene concentrate, pilot plant work determined that the pegmatites also contained heavy minerals including cassiterite. Plans were made to recover the heavy minerals as a by-product and the flowsheet incorporated these facilities when the mill was modified for the new spodumene recovery process. The orebodies consist of spodumene, feldspar, quartz and mica. Apatite, tourmaline, and beryl are present in small quantities. The wall rock is pre- dominantly hornblende shist. The heavy minerals, including cassiterite, columbite, pyrrhotite, monazite, pyrite, and rutile represent about 0.2 pct of the ore. The fine-grained heavy minerals are disseminated throughout the dikes, apparently unassociated with the spodumene. The pegmatites are quarried and secondary breakage is by mud-capping and block-holing. Power shovels load into trucks transporting the ore to a coarse ore bin. A Telesmith 10x36-in. apron feeder delivers the ore to an 18x36 in. Traylor Jaw crusher adjusted to discharge -3 in. product to a primary conveyor. The conveyor delivers to a 4x5-ft Tyrock single deck vibrating screen using 3/4 in. cloth. The screen undersize is elevated to the crushed ore bin. Screen oversize goes to an Allis-Chalmers Hydrocone Crusher fitted with 4 in. concave and set to deliver approximately 66 pct minus 3/4 in. The crusher discharge returns to the primary conveyor. The crushing and screening installation has a capacity of about 60 tons per hour. Spirals The crushed ore is delivered at a rate of 350 tons per day to two 6x8-ft Hardinge Pebble Mills, equipped with 20 mesh Ton-Cap trommel screens. The screen oversize is pumped to a 12-in. hydroclone for primary desliming. The hydroclone underfl spirals. There is no heavy mineral loss in the hydro-clone overflow. The spirals bank consists of eight 5-turn Model 24-A Humphreys Spirals. The top port and the last four ports of each spiral are blanked, the remaining nine port splitters are adjusted to remove about 5 pct feed weight. The heavy mineral rougher concentrates are upgraded on a Deister Overstrom table. The spiral concentrates contain approximately 4 pct heavy mineral, and the spiral reject, which goes to another section of the plant for spodumene recovery, contains about 0.03 pct heavy mineral. There is an interesting feature in the spirals installation. An adjustable splitter mounted on the discharge boxes splits out a mica fines product containing very little heavy mineral. The mica product is cleaned by spiralling and screening. Thus the spirals recover two products; mica, and a heavy mineral rougher concentrate. Table Treatment The rougher spiral concentrate goes to a Deister Plato table, modified to receive a Deister-Overstrom No. 6 rubber cover with sand riffles. The table is operated with a 5/8 in. stroke, 270 strokes per minute, and a slope of 1/2 in. per ft from feed to tailings side. There is no slope adjustment from motion to concentrate end. Wash water consumption is relatively high, since the large spodumene grains tend to report with the fine heavy minerals. A middling band about 4 in. wide is maintained in order to produce clean concentrate. The middling, representing about 10 pct of table feed, is recirculated by air-lift. A band of concentrate grade coarse spodumene occurs just below the middling. This is removed and delivered to concentrate storage. The table tailing, containing approximately 0.7 pct heavy minerals, is returned to the spodumene feed preparation circuit. The heavy mineral table concentrates are approximately 45 pct cassiterite, 33 pct columbite, 14 pct pyrrhotite and 8 pct monazite, together, with some rutile, pyrite, and copper from blasting wire. Concentrate is collected at 24 hour intervals. and dried. If the concentrate remains in wet storage appreciably longer surface oxidation takes place which seriously interferes with the subsequent magnetic separation process. About 150 lb of heavy mineral concentrate is produced per 24 hours and shipped to the company's plant at Exton, Pa. for final separation into tin and columbium concentrates.

The effects of grain size and shape on alloys of titanium with nitrogen and aluminum have been determined. Increasing a grain size decreases strength and hardness and increases impact resistance. Quenching from the ß field produces subgrain markings delineating a plates in Ti-N alloys but not in Ti-AI alloys. This suggests a precipitation from the high nitrogen alloys. ALPHA titanium alloys are single-phase alloys with the hexagonal-close-packed structure of a titanium. If these alloys are worked and annealed within the a field, equiaxed structures result in which strength is derived from the solid solution of the alloying elements present. Strain hardening can be used to increase further the strength of a titanium alloys. This is the only other mode of strengthening the a type of alloy. Quenching from the ß field has been noted by many investigators to have little effect on the strength of iodide titanium and on commercial titanium. Ti-A1 alloys were found to be little different in hardness, whether annealed in the a field or quenched from the ß field.' These facts illustrate a characteristic of a titanium alloys: they are insensitive to heat treatments from the ß field. Underlying this heat-treatment insensitivity are the facts that the a-ß field is generally narrow in a titanium alloys, the transformation-temperature range increases with a-stabilizing content, and the a solubilities of the alloying elements are greater than the ß solubilities. When quenching is done from the ß field, there is no supersaturation of the alloying elements in the acicular transformation structure produced. Welds in a titanium alloys generally are ductile, because no transformation hardening occurs during cooling.1,2 Other desirable features of a alloys are: no thermal-stability problem, excellent toughness, and retention of strength at elevated temperatures better than a-ß or ß alloys of comparable room-temperature strength. The prime factors governing the properties of a titanium alloys are the amount and kind of solute present. This can change the a phase from a soft, tough material into a hard, brittle material with no apparent change in microstructure. Moreover, brit-tleness can exist over a wider alloy-content range, without change of phase, than in most other metals. The solutes for a titanium may be divided into interstitial and substitutional types. Oxygen and nitrogen dissolve interstitially in rather large amounts, extending well through the brittle range, and the transformation-temverature ranges are raised in the process.:' , carbon has a maximum interstitial solubility of about 0.5 pct at the peritectoid temperature, while at lower temperatures the solubility decreases to about 0.2 pct.3,5 Substitutional a solutes include aluminum and tin. Aluminum has a high a solubility of 25 pct Al, and increases the transformation-temperature range markedly.6,7 Tin has a high a solubility of about 20 pct, but has a relatively innocuous effect on the transformation-temperature range.' The choice between interstitial and substitutional solutes generally has been conceded to the substitutional solutes because of a belief that they do not have as adverse an effect on ductility and notch toughness. However, a recent investigation8 on the effect of hydrogen on titanium has shown that this element, which is not under compositional control, has a powerful detrimental effect on notch toughness. Hydrogen was shown to form a hydride which is practically insoluble (about 0.002 pct) in a titanium at room temperature, although the solubility at the eutectoid temperature of about 300°C is relatively high, about 0.16 pct. Limited data were presented on the effect of hydrogen on a alloys, where the same impairment of toughness as in unalloyed titanium is found. The work reported here describes the effects of interstitial and substitutional solutes on 1—the mechanical properties of high purity titanium free of titanium hydride and 2—the influence of structural variables on these properties. Nitrogen was selected as an example of an interstitial solute with high solubility and aluminum as a substitutional solute with high solubility. All compositions were well within the ductile range, since it was not intended to study the brittleness problem here, but to study only the factors influencing optimum mechanical properties. Procedures The alloys were prepared from iodide titanium as 1/2 Ib ingots double melted to insure homogeneity.

AS I told you before in the treatise on ores, once these are found (whether they are ores of metals or semiminerals) it is necessary to assay them in order to know what is in them, since the judgment of the sight is not sufficient for recognizing the quantity or even what substance they contain. For this reason, it is necessary to come to assaying and, with the knowledge of experience, to weigh their virtues and to proceed with the work or withdraw from it and its expense; and also through knowledge to make provision for their defects if some evilness harms the ores. For if you should have need of a thing that would help them and should not find it, all that you have done would be lost; and, on the other hand, if you should find that the ores are abundant and rich and easy to smelt, you take courage to continue without respect for anything. Therefore, in the following book I shall tell you first in general how the assay of all the metals should be made. I shall enlarge in particular on silver more than on any of the others since it is more important. Then I shall tell you how the ores should be prepared for smelting and also how blast furnaces and other furnaces for smelting such ores should be constructed, and finally how all elemental mixtures of metals are to be separated one from the other with the ability and power of art, and how they are reduced to their final perfection and fineness according to their species.

With the signing of the armistice on Nov. 11, the direction of the main concentration of effort of the United States was changed. In order to win the war, all industrial efforts had to be organized and centralized. With the war won and peace in sight, this centralization of effort stopped and the full play of individual initiative was allowed to resume its sway in the community. During this period of reversal of direction of effort, there was a natural loss of momentum and the United States, as well as the rest of the world, is in for a period of readjustment. The immense progress that was made in one direction under the stress of the necessities of war, which focused the energies of a nation in one direction, is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished if a community with many varying interests can be united on one objective which it desires to attain. The realization that the fusing of many interests into one stream of effort is difficult should not prevent us from taking the long view ahead that is necessary in order to be able to measure the progress made. If we don't have a mountain peak to guide us, we are very likely to run in circles in the plain without reaching the goal to which we strive. The most efficient development of natural resources is an ideal that, from a material point of view, appeals to the engineer. This ideal includes giving of opportunities to everyone to take a share in the development of these resources.. It also contemplates rewarding foresight

While the occurrence of phosphorus in coking-coal has assumed less importance with the development of the opeu-hearth method of steel-making, it may not be without interest to note the form in which phosphorus exists in one particular coal-seam. In the examination of what is known as the Big seam, which outcrops a few miles west of Columbiana, Ala., my attention was called to the distribution through the coal, in the form of minute veins and particles, of a resinous-looking substance. A small amount of this was selected, and was provisionally identified as evansite (Al6 Y2 O14, 18 Aq). Subsequently, through the courtesy of Dr. J. Sharshall Grasty, of the Geological Department of the University of Virginia, I was able to secure an additional amount of material, which was purified down to about 0.3 g. This was examined by Prof. John J. Porter, of the University of Cincinnati, and gave the following partial analysis: Per Cent. Loss on ignition,......... 37.43 Phosphoric anhydride,..10.33 Alumina,..........36.33 There was also a trace of silica, and quite a considerable quantity of lime and magnesia. Professor Porter was led to think that the material was not pure, but a mixture of several of the phosphates of aluminum carrying lime and magnesia. The material available did not permit of the convenient determination of the other ingredients. One form in which phosphorus occurs in coal is evidently as a hydrated phosphate of aluminum; and any coal which shows to the eye the occurrence of a light-colored resinous-looking material should be looked on with suspicion as being high in phosphorus.

The attention of travellers, upon the desert bordering the Great Colorado of the West, is often arrested by broad stretches of pebble-covered plains, or mesas, glittering in the sunlight from the myriads of polished surfaces, giving, at a distance, the appearance of a sheet of water. It is not alone the well-rounded, polished surface of these pebbles which commands attention, but, in addition, their nearly black or darkbrown color; and, above all, their uniform distribution in a level sheet, covering the plain in a continuous layer or pavement like a vast mosaic without sand or soil. Hundreds of square miles along the lower Colorado, especially in Yuma county, Arizona, and on the borders of the Colorado Desert in California, are thus covered. It is evident that the former cxtent of such pebbly plains was much greater than now, for the continuity of the mesa is broken into by the numerous dry arroyos or " washes " formed during exceptional showers or deluging rains. In some places there is an underlying bed of pebbly conglomerate, a mixture of pebbles and sand; in others the pebbles rest on a sandy, earthy foundation. The rounded pebbles are distinctly alluvial in origin, and pertain to the ancient Colorado drainage system; but it is not comprehensible that such regular layers of polished pebbles could have been left by subsiding floods or river action. Attention was early directed by me to these remarkable plains, first examined in 1853, when exploring for the United States and seeking a practicable route for a railway to the Pacific coast.* The cut and polished surface of the pebbles

The specifications for bridge-steel are usually not severe. The main difficulty is to secure a material which will roll easily, without showing signs of cracking on the corners of the blooms or on the flanges of the beams. In many mills sulphur has been deemed the most harmful constituent in this respect. It has been thought hazardous.to roll steel containing over 0.07 per cent. of sulphur. Yet, in making steel for the Phoenix Iron Company, I have produced from stock running as high as 0.13 per cent. of sulphur a material which rolled very satisfactorily. It is reasonable to infer that the injurious effect of sulphur can be neutralized, to a great extent, by proper treatment in the open-hearth furnace; and the following notes from my usual practice here may be of interest to those obliged to use high-sulphur stock. The steel made at Phoenixville in the 20-ton furnaces has about the following composition : Per cent. Carbon,...0.15 to 0.20 Manganese,.........0.50 to 0.60 Sulphur,..........0.11 to 0.13 Phosphorus,.: .0.04 to 0.06 Silicon,.......... 0.01 to 0.02 The best running heats were made with a small amount of pigiron. In using large proportions of pig the quantity of ore is also increased. This not only cuts the bottom, but also lengthens the time required to bring the charge down. Up to 50 per cent. of pig may be used, but 25 per cent. is much better. A 40,000-pound charge, containing 10,000 pounds of pig and 30,000 pounds of Bessemer butts or beam-scrap, works very well.

ALL the ores of any kind whatsoever, even though they be semiminerals and may be perfect in their qualities, have to be recognized by experienced and good sorters. These men must have a detailed as well as a general experience of the metals so that in this first preparation, which is most important, they may know how to distinguish the good from the bad, and to know what is rock and what is ore. They must use patience in this, breaking and cutting and king the ore from the earth. They must separate the good ore from the bad, avoiding as far as possible every occasion for poisoning it by traces of other ores, evil stones, or other things inimical to its nature. Finally, with the judgment of the eye and with tools, and, in the end, by roasting it with fire and then quenching it with water, or by washing and re-washing it, the ore must be made as pure as possible in order to join it better with the companions that seem to be the most beneficial for its needs. Ores would be useless stones without smelting. Therefore, when it is certain that such ores are of divers elemental mixtures, aid must be given to each one according to the evil ingredients [47v] that harm it. But because such evil qualities are things that are often not apparent to the eye, such as too great a burning, or too much earthiness so that when they are alone the fire burns these ores before it melts them, it is necessary to temper them with other materials. INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid combustible mineral substance resulting from the alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. It occurs in nature with varying percentages of mineral matter associated with and incorporated into the coalified material. If the amount of this inorganic mineral matter is sufficiently small, and if selective mining can be practiced so as to avoid the incorporation of ash- bearing material from adjacent strata and/or parting seams, the coal can be used as-mined. Otherwise, it must be given a preparation treatment. In 1980 the bulk of the approximately 525 coal preparation plants were located in the eastern half of the U.S., largely in the Appalachian and to a lesser extent in the midwest coal fields (1). Only 17 of these preparation plants were located in the west; these were in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. In the past, however, a great many more preparation plants were operated in these and other western states. The upsurge in both the domestic and world- wide demand for quality coking and steam coal will certainly lead to an increase in the number of preparation plants in the west. In fact, there has been a massive development of coal mines and their associated preparation plants across our northern border in Alberta and British Columbia, largely to serve the export coking and steam coal market. Most of the tremendous increase in newly-mined coal in the western U.S. has come from thick seams of inherently low-sulfur, low- ash coal, easy to mine selectively without significant contamination with ash-forming minerals and requiring no preparation. Although a considerable amount of practical importance attaches to systems involving gases and molten metals, little is known regarding the effects of alloy elements upon the solubility of gases in liquid iron. The solubilities of hydrogen1 and nitrogen2,3 in pure liquid iron arc known and it has been shown that small amounts of silicon and aluminum3 exert only a small effect upon the solubility of nitrogen but greatly increase its rate of solution. This paper presents the results of a study of the solubility of nitrogen, at pressures approximately one atmosphere, in molten iron containing up to 15.8 per cent silicon. EXPEBIMENTAL METHOD There are two general methods by which the solubility of a gas in a molten metal may be determined. In the first, which Sievertsl employed, the gas is measured from a burette into the enclosure containing the metal and the amount absorbed is found by subtracting from the total volume that of the dead space in the container. The second method, which was used successfully for pure liquid iron, is to expose the molten metal to the gas until absorption ceases, then to solidify and analyze the metal. In either method the stirring produced by inductive heating prevents the development of a stagnant layer at the metal surface and ensures actual attainment of equilibrium. Obviously the second method is accurate only when the saturated metal is capable of solidifying without gas evolution. Since the rate of solution of nitrogen in iron is increased by the presence of silicon, it was to be expected that the rate of evolution would be correspondingly increased and for this reason the first method was selected. As an accompaniment to the interesting papers which discuss the practical aspects of forced drive, or flooding, in our oil fields, and to others which deal with laboratory or field tests on the same subject, a few remarks on the theoretical principles concerned may not be considered inappropriate at the present time. Without claiming to have had the field experience which some of you certainly possess I venture to present some of the results of an analytical investigation upon this method of increasing the recovery of oil from our natural reservoirs. I firmly believe that these results will accord with your experience. I shall confine the present discussion to the consideration of a perfectly ideal situation Let us assume that the productive formation lies perfectly horizontal, that it is of uniform thickness, of perfectly homogeneous texture, and that it contains oil with gas in solution, and no water, throughout a definite, although undefined, lateral extent. We shall furthermore assume that the pressure existing within the reservoir as thus specified, is such that some of the gas is in the free state, spread uniformly throughout, in the form of minute bubbles within the pores of the formation. We now have an ideal reservoir subject to the peculiar action of capillarity as described by the French physicist Jules Jamin. In all directions within the reservoir we see these bubbles of gas, separated by globules of oil which tend to remain in the capillary channels that connect the pores. The action of these bubbles and globules under the application or release of pressure has been fully described by Jamin.1 Most of our oil fields in the Mid-Continent and Eastern districts are subject to this action of capillarity: The fact that the actual reservoir is often far from being ideal in the manner specified above does not preclude the, influence of this phenomenon. Definition of Ae 1.—-Just as we call A 1 of rising temperature Ac 1, and that of falling temperature Ar 1, so we may give the symbol Ae 1 to the equilibrium position of A 1. Preliminary Assumptions.—In deciding what weight to assign the various data, and indeed what data are to count, three assumptions should be made. These are : 1. The corollary from the phase rule, that the temperature of Ae 1 is constant and independent of the carbon content, though, of course, it may be changed by the presence of other elements. 2. That because neither in heating nor in cooling can the transformatioil begin before the temperature reaches Ae 1, though it may be delayed by lag till after the temperature has passed beyond Ae 1, therefore Ae 1 should be at or below the observed beginning of Ac 1 and at or above the observed beginning of Ar 1, and, a fortiori, it should be at or below the observed maximum of Ac 1, and at or above the observed maximum of Ar 1. It may be necessary to take these maxima into consideration in view of the experimental difficulty of detecting these beginnings. 3. Because of the extraordinary degree of lag in the immediate neighborhood of Ae 1, as proved by Brayshaw, little weight should be attached even to the most conclusive evidence that the transformation has not occurred on reaching, or even staying at, a given temperature, because that failure to occur may always be due to lag. Evidence that the transformation has occurred, or has even begun, at a given temperature deserves incomparably greater weight. In other words, the temperature may pass beyond Ae 1 without inducing the ' transformation, but the transformation cannot be induced except by

Copper Basin in Yavapai county, Arizona Territory, about twenty miles southwest of Prescott, is well named. It is a depressed area, and a region of cupriferous impregnation.* The geologic conditions are simple. The foundation rock is a coarse-grained granite and gneiss, in which soda feldspar predominates. There are also dykes of porphyritic rock, and a large quartz vein containing pyrites. Superimposed on this crystalline foundation, we find heavy beds of mechanically formed rocks, conglomerates, breccias, and sandstones, in horizontal layers cropping along the bed of a creek, and apparently the remnants of a much more extended formation, now denuded and largely carried away by gradual atmospheric erosion. The heavy beds of conglomerate are in many places much broken and tilted up, even standing on edge in large blocks, as if they had been lifted by some great convulsion; but the cause is much more simple, being merely the removal by gradual disintegration and erosion of the softened and decayed granitic rock below. The materials of these sedimentary beds are chiefly fragments of granite, gneiss, and plutonic rocks loosely mingled. They are the chief repositories of the copper-ore, which forms the cementing substance. This copper-ore is the blue and the green carbonate, azurite and malachite, and the ore is so generally spread through the mass of the beds that the blue and the green croppings can be seen at a great distance, particularly after or during a shower of rain, when the colors are extremely brilliant and beautiful. The copper carbonate is not only a matrix and a cementing material for the fragments of rock, but it invests and covers these fragments so that only malachite and azurite are visible. The beds are from three to ten feet or more in thickness, and, although seemingly solid carbonate of copper, rarely contain over 12 or 15 per cent. of that metal. ANY mechanism, either natural or artificial, for regulating the func-tioning of a given unit in the general economy must operate toward the maintenance of equilibrium if it is to survive. The petroleum industry, concerned as it is with the production of a natural resource of specialized character, is surrounded not only by the economic factors common to other industries but by an extra set of unique elements centering about the fugitive character of crude petroleum under conditions of competitive development. The term equilibrium, therefore, so far as the oil business concerned, involves a combination of economic and physical factors: the first set having to do with supply, demand, costs, profit margins, purchasing power, and the like; and the second, with underground pres-sures in oil pools, efficient rates of extraction, and all other aspects of engineering that may be summarized by the familiar term "conserva-tion." The two categories, in fact, are not as clearly divided as the foregoing statement would imply, for in practice it will be found that the economic and physical aspects have a pervasive interaction and interrelationship. If the development of the petroleum industry in the United States is examined from its inception in 1859 down to the present, it will be found that, beginning about 11 years ago, a new mechanism for regulating the production of crude petroleum made its appearance. Prior to this recent period, the production of this raw material was determined by competitive forces operating without outside restraints. At present the output of crude oil is subjected to supervision by regulatory bodies in most of the oil-producing states, which impose upon the operators certain conditions having to do with the manner and rates of production. Thus, in the space of a decade, the mechanism for producing crude oil has changed from an automatic to a designed procedure called proration. And in its short history this method has been marked by a rapid evolution in its nature and incidence, with progressive changes still under way.

LARGE quantities of fine anthracite with associated impurities are discharged with the waste water from the coal-cleaning plants in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. Furthermore, for many years this fine material has accumulated and formed silt banks. The difficulty of removing the impurities from the fine material and the lack of adequate markets are responsible for the waste of this material. In view of a larger demand for fine coal, mainly for pulverized fuel, the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. decided to investigate the froth flotation process for recovery of fine coal from these waste solids. A test plant was constructed and operated for six months during 1942 in order to determine the practicability of recovering coal from the waste water of a cleaning plant (breaker) by froth flotation, and to obtain operating data for designing a commercial plant if the results were favorable. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION Before the pilot plant was constructed information was obtained by field and small-scale laboratory tests to serve as a guide in the design and operation of the pilot plant. Size and ash analyses of a representative sample of the material discharged in the wash water from a cleaning plant are given in Table I. [ ] The refuse content increases progressively as the size of the particles decreases. The larger particles (+35 m.) are low in ash content and could be marketed without cleaning. Since these solids are discharged from the breakers with 90 to 95 per cent water by weight, the first step in the recovery of the coal was that of reducing the quantity of water so that water in excess will not have to be handled. Furthermore, it was found that the removal of most of the minus 200 mesh high-ash material was desirable to permit the most efficient flotation of the coal. Classification tests were run and showed that a hydroseparator overflow rate of 12 ft. per hour was sufficient to eliminate much of the minus 200-mesh material while allowing the coarser material to settle and be thickened.
