Sodium sulfide is used extensively to increase the recovery of oxidized copper and lead minerals by flotation, particularly when using xanthates as collectors. It is generally assumed that the sodium sulfide converts a film of the oxidized mineral to the sulfide, and that the xanthate, while not a very effective collector for the oxidized minerals, is a good collector for the sulfide. On the other hand, Taggart and his collaborators1 claim that unless sulfide minerals are oxidized they cannot adsorb xanthates and do not float. Gaudin2 states that amyl xanthate, used in conjunction with sodium sulfide, gives better results than ethyl xanthate. Rabone3 and Mayer-Schranz4 agree that excess of sulfide functions as a depressant. Owing to the greater solubilities of the oxidized minerals than of the sulfides, the consumption of sodium sulfide is greater than that of most other flotation reagents, up to 10 lb. per ton of ore being used in some plants. Luyken and Bierbrauer5 recommend a water washing to remove soluble heavy metal salts; by this means sulfide consumption may be reduced. It was desirable to determine the limits of the sulfide concentrations between which contact is possible at surfaces of anglesite and cerussite in xanthate solutions. Similar determinations were desirable for the sulfide minerals with which the oxidized minerals are usually associated, since conditions should be chosen, if possible, so that the two types of mineral will float together. Because of the formation, especially in acid solutions, of hydrogen sulfide and of the hydrosulfide ion (HS-), the permissible limits of sulfide addition are obviously dependent upon the pH value. Sphalerite responds to ethyl xanthate only in the presence of an activator; for example, copper sulfate. It was necessary, therefore, to determine whether sodium sulfide interferes with the activation of sphalerite by copper sulfate. The combined effect of sulfide and copper sulfate was determined also for galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite.

The mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are situated in the Morenci-Metcalf copper district in southeastern Arizona. This copper-bearing district covers a triangular mountainous area of about 3 square miles, rising abruptly from the gravel plateau of the surrounding country. In this area, an immense intrusion of porphyry lias displaced, shattered, and engulfed the shales, limestones, and quartzites formerly bedded on the basal granite. Outcrops of oxide ore were discovered in 1873, and these surface ores were found to connect in depth with large bodies of high-grade oxide ores in the limestones and shales. The mining of these high-grade ores continued until about 1893, when their rapid exhaustion led to the discovery and exploitation of the low-grade sulphide ores in the adjoining porphyry. Methods of concentration were then devised and the low-grade ores finally rendered profitable. The Arizona Copper Co. and the Detroit Copper Mining Co., operating in the same district, were the pioneers in the successful development of the low-grade "porphyry" properties of to-day. The largest mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are the Humboldt and Clay at Morenci, and the Coronado, Metcalf, and King at Metcalf. These mines produce about 4,000 tons daily of concentrating ore containing from 2.5 to 2.8 per cent. copper. The topography of the country is very rugged and mining operations are conducted principally through adit levels. A few of the mines are opened by shafts, the deepest being 1,100 ft., in the Coronado mine. Ore Occurrence The low-grade sulphide ore occurs as: (1) disseminated deposits in the main stock of quartz porphyry; (2) lode deposits in fault fissures in granite. The high-grade oxide ores were found as tabular deposits in limestone and shale close to contacts with porphyry dikes. Low-grade oxide ore formed the outcrop of some of the sulphide orebodies; the majority of the outcrops, however, were barren.

A foRmer paper1 described in detail various methods of calculating coal analyses to obtain the composition and calorific value of the pure coal substance—that is, of the coal free from its mineral matter. The paper included a table showing calorific values of pure coal, as calculated from float-and-sink portions, by means of the Parr formula for "unit coal" and by the customary moisture-free and ash-free formula. A modification of the Parr formula was proposed, based on the assumption that one-half the sulfur present in Coal occurs as pyritic sulfur and one-half as organic sulfur. In the published discussion of the paper Cady gave a table of results on a large number of Illinois coals as obtained by the Parr formula and the proposed modification thereof. The results obtained by Cady indicate that the Parr formula applies better to Illinois coals than does the modified formula proposed by Fieldner and Selvig. The present paper gives results obtained by applying the modified Parr formula to the analyses of the float-and-sink portions of the coals shown in the former paper, and results obtained by applying the Parr formula, the modified Parr formula, and the simple moisture-free and ash-free formula to various coals of the United States ranging in sulfur content from less than 1 per cent to more than 4 per cent sulfur. A graphic method of estimating the calorific value of pure coal and determining the relation of the coal ash to the mineral matter of coal, as proposed by Stansfield and Sutherland,2 was applied to a number of coals, and the results are given herein. Testing Formulas with Float-and-sink Separations The former paper by Fieldner and Selvig gave heat values of pure coal of the float-and-sink portions of 21 coals, as calculated by the Parr formula

The presence of gas in coal mines necessitates the use of costly ventilation arrangements and the use of expensive mining methods. On the other hand, the gas itself in many instances is of considerable intrinsic value, and its separate recovery might conceivably be a profitable undertaking. This paper is concerned with a study of the movement of gas in coal strata with the object of determining the laws governing gas movement and thus making at least a preliminary step toward the solution of the more practical problem of its control or recovery. Naturally, so important a subject has received much attention from scientists and engineers. In most cases, however, the studies have been concerned with the origin1$, the amount" the composition3 and the method of retention4 of the gas in coal; or, from the more practical side, have been concerned with the phenonlena and conditions associated with outbursts5 or explosions and their control. Numerous studies also have been made of the permeability of coal to gas" of gas pressures measured in coal seams, etc. The authors are unaware, however, of any attempt to present a consistent or complete picture of the laws governing the movement of gas through the coal. Study in West Virginia A recent study conducted at this University7 gives the first presentation of the distribution of pressures in a small section of a coal seam. Holes were drilled into the coal rib to various depths and at various distances from the coal face. The location selected for study was as remote as possible from disturbing influences of mining operations, faults, "wants," etc. The pipes extending into the coal that were used to determine pressures were grouted into the borehole for the entire depth of the hole, and great precaution was taken to insure accurate pressure readings. During the course of some magnetic investigations which the authors have under way, six bars of 0.43-carbon steel were tested, a permeameter designed after the Hopkinson yoke type being used. The results obtained were of some interest and although far from complete serve at least to show the necessity for a careful investigation of the previous history of the samples under study as well as the chemical composition. A steel of given chemical composition may assume a great variety of structures, depending on its treatment. Professor Sauveur has devised a very clear and effective means of illustrating this point. The accompanying microphotographs show some of the possible structures assumed by a 0.30 carbon steel (Fig. 1). It is now a well-established fact that a structural change is accompanied by changes in the tensile strength, elastic limit, hardness, etc., and it seems reasonable to assume also, a change in the magnetic properties. Six bars of a 0.43-carbon steel were used, all the bars being taken from the same rod and treated as follows: Bar 1. Heated to 1,100° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 2. Heated to 1,000° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 3. Heated to 900° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 4. Heated to 1,000° and cooled in air. Bar 5. Heated to 900° and cooled in air. Bar 6. Untreated. The bars were then turned to 13 mm. diameter and tested by the Hopkinson yoke method. After testing, three specimens were taken from each bar, one from each end and one from the middle. The homogeneity of the bars was tested in this manner and in no instance could any difference in structure in the three specimens1 be detected. Bars 1 to 3 inclusive are pearlitic in structure. The deposits described in this paper occur over much of Wayne County and in the southeast portion of Hardin County, Tennessee, and in the northeast and northwest portions of Mississippi and Alabama respectively. The presence of tripoli in this region has been known for some time and descriptions of various occurrences in Tennessee have been made by Jewelll and Miser2, while Hilgard3, Lowe4 and Logan5 have treated the deposits that occur in the adjacent portions of Alabama and Mississippi, but there has not been a 'general survey of the entire field summarizing completely the geology of the deposits with respect to their origin and stratigraphic relationships. During 1934, while engaged in surveys of mineral resources through this region for the Tennessee Valley Authority, the writer collected data with this in mind, and has assembled them in this report. He is indebted to H. S. Rankin and N. A. Rose, of the Tennessee Valley Authority Geology Division, for field assistance. Location of Tripoli Deposits Fig. 1 shows the locations of deposits of tripoli in a long belt that extends from northeast Wayne County southwestward into northwest Alabama and thence passes into Mississippi, where the formations carrying it are finally covered by Cretaceous sand and gravel of the Mississippian Embayment. Occasional deposits occur also in the southeastern corner of Hardin County, Tennessee. While tripoli is found at nearly all points along this axis where the related formations are exposed, the largest deposits are grouped about three different centers. Waynesboro-Collinwood District.—In the area between Waynesboro and Collinwood, in Wayne County, Tennessee, tripoli of various grades outcrops in the valley of Green River and in tributary valleys on either side. This district is roughly 12 miles long in a northeast-southwest direction and has a maximum width of 5 miles at its northern end. INTRODUCTION Ideally, this paper should start by citing examples of slope failures in open pit mines during earthquakes. I do not know of any such examples, although - since my search of the literature has not been exhaustive - such examples may well exist. However, there certainly are many examples of devastating earthquake-induced landslides, and there is no reason why such landslides cannot occur at large open pits. Moreover, many of the actual earthquake-induced landslides have seriously affected mining operations in one way or another. Hence, this paper will treat earthquake-induced landslide phenomena in general, in the hope and expectation that the reader can apply this general knowledge to the specific problems associated with open pit mining. Ultimately, of course, the aim is to predict the likelihood of the occurrence of earthquake-induced landslides, and to delineate steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of their occurrence. These aims can be achieved only imperfectly at the present time, for our knowledge concerning earthquake-induced landslides is still in an embryonic stage. Nonetheless, much useful knowledge does exist. In order to understand and apply this knowledge, it is necessary to: 1. Review the nature and extent of actual earthquake-induced landslides; 2. Have a grasp of the basic terminology and concepts of seismology; 3. Study the fundamentals of probability-based seismic risk analysis; 4. Appreciate the way in which earth materials behave during earthquake loadings; and 5. Have a general knowledge of the methods currently available for analyzing the dynamic response of slopes. Much of this paper is devoted to this necessary background. Information of practical use in connection with various classes of slope stability problems is assembled in the final sections. The Durham Iron Works of Messrs. Cooper & Hewitt, near Riegelsville, Pa., occupy a site which has been almost continuously the scene of iron-manufacturing industry since 1727. Doubtless if Anthony Morris and his thirteen associates, who in that year erected a blast-furnace on the Durham Creek, a short distance above where the Durham Iron Works now stands, could have had a vision of the improved and enlarged apparatus of their successors, they would have been not less astonished by the huge stack, the hot-blast ovens, and the blowing-engines of the modern blast-furnace, than by the railroad which now follows the bank of the river on which their clumsy " Durham boats " once floated pig-iron to Philadelphia. In one particular, posterity must confess their snperiority. We are told that in November, 1728, they shipped three tons of Durham iron to England. The proprietors of the Durham Iron Works are not now shipping iron to England. The present Durham furnace was built (in place of two smaller ones) in 1874 and 1875, and made its first blast in 1876. A description of it, with other works of the same proprietors, at Trenton, N. J., by A. L. Holley and Lenox Smith, was published in London Engineering for January 31st, and February 21st, 1879. Since that time, a number of improvements, dictated by experience, have been made in the details of the furnace and fittings; and the recent roilclusion of a long and successful blast presents a convenient opportunity for a description of the works and a statement of the results of practice. The accompanying drawings will show the general arrangement of the works. The furnace, Plate I., Figs. 1 and 2, is 75 feet high by 19 feet bosh. The hearth is 11 feet 4 inches in diameter, with seven tuyeres 5 feet 6 inches above hearth-line. For many years sulphur and its congeners selenium and tellurium have been regarded as very harmful elements in copper and copper-rich alloys. Like many similar prejudices, this has been found to be partly wrong. All three of these elements actually have no great effect on the working properties of copper and its alloys, and are desirable additions in that they considerably enhance the machinability of alloys in which they are present. Because of their possible commercial importance, a study of the machinability and other properties of the pure binary alloys was made, as described in this paper, and the effect of selenium on a large number of copper alloys was determined. The current opinion regarding the deleterious effects of elements in this group undoubtedly arose because of occasional failures of tough-pitch copper containing unusually high tellurium, and because of the well-known fact that sulphur causes spewing and unsoundness in tough-pitch copper. Siebe,1 also Deretchey and Margolina,2 studied the effect of sulphur on copper and showed that in the absence of oxygen it was present in the form of copper sulphide, which was less harmful to the properties than an equivalent amount of copper oxide. No data have been published on selenium and tellurium, although the statement is often made, following Eggleston,3 that tellurium makes copper hot-short. Copper specifications call for only traces of these elements. Skowronski and Mosher4 give data on the effect of selenium and tellurium on the conductivity of tough-pitch copper. In private communication Mr. Skowronski says that the samples were hot-forged from small castings and drawn to 0.081 in. diameter, but it should not be inferred from this that these elements are harmless to the working properties of wirebars and commercial shapes. THE Wisconsin zinc district, also known as the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc district, is an area of about 2500 sq. mi. in the southwestern portion of Wisconsin and adjacent parts of Illinois and Iowa. It includes Iowa, Grant and Lafayette counties in Wisconsin, Jo Davies County in Illinois, and an irregular strip of Clayton and Dubuque counties in Iowa, parallel to the Mississippi River. During periods of high metal prices mining has been quite active in this district, but recently the lower metal prices have caused many companies to suspend, so that at the present time there are only a small number of mines operating. The short life of these mines and the low mineral content of the zinc deposits limit the investment in development and equipment, and necessitates the operation of this equipment at maximum running time and maximum capacity. The tonnage of rock handled (locally termed dirt) is large in comparison with the tonnage of concentrate produced. Moreover, the zinc content of the concentrate is low, varying from 25 to 40 per cent zinc, and the value per ton is correspondingly low. The life of the mines varies greatly. An exception-ally good deposit may produce 2,000,000 tons of rock during a period of ten years, market value permitting, from which will be obtained 100,000 to 150,000 tons of concentrate. One property which might be con-sidered as fulfilling the requirements of a profitable operation was developed and equipped in 1925, oper-ated continuously for a period of two and a half years, produced 484,292 tons of rock, from which was obtained 37,659 tons of zinc concentrate, 34.4 per cent Zn, and 1155 tons of lead concentrate, 67 per cent Pb. During the war period prices of ore permitted the mining of lower grade ores than has been possible in the past few years. The maintaining of a higher grade mill-feed has resulted in reducing the size of stopes formerly carried in the old mines and confining the workings within narrower limits.

KYANITE, long known to occur in Georgia, did not excite commercial interest until about 1930. Investigations revealed two main types of deposits: (1) separate kyanite crystals embedded in mica schist; and (2) crystal aggregates of kyanite associated with quartz in small and very irregular veins. The second kind at first sight appeared to be the best source of supply. Large boulders or dornicks of kyanite with more or less quartz were found on the surface at many places throughout the Piedmont and Highland sections of the state, but prospecting failed to disclose a sizable vein. These dornicks seem to be a surface accumula-tion from small veins or lens-shaped masses not more than one or two feet thick, and with a horizontal extent of not' more than a few feet. The larger surface accumulation of kyanite dornicks, where not too badly stained by iron oxide, may prove to be marketable, but it is extremely doubtful whether a vein large enough to mine will ever be found. In 1932 deposits of the kyanite-mica schist were known to occur in two places northwest of Clarkesville, in Habersham County. In 1934, at the request of and in cooperation with the Georgia Geological Survey, the United States Geological Survey made a thorough investigation2 of the deposits and found that the two known areas of kyanite-mica schist in Habersham County were but a part of an unsymmetrical, U-shaped belt (Fig. 1) with a western limb extending into Rabun County and somewhat longer than the eastern limb. The total length of the belt is about 30 miles. The width of outcrop ranges from 100 ft. to 1/4 mile or more. Deposits of kyanite-mica schist of very doubtful commercial importance were found in several other counties. Only the deposits of this kyanite-mica schist belt in Habersham and Rabun counties will be discussed in this paper.

ANTHRACITE SMALL power-driven, toothed, cast-iron rolls were used first to break anthracite in 1844. Prior to that time, men with hammers, who stood on perforated cast-iron plates, broke the large lumps into commercial sizes. In order to convert run-of-mine into the various sizes required by the anthracite industry, about 20 million tons must be broken, annually, into smaller sizes. This phase of anthracite preparation is of major importance, because the degradation accompanying reduction in coal sizes should be kept at a minimum. The exclusive use of toothed rolls for that purpose indicates that comminution by rolls is the best solution of the problem. Many improvements have been made in tooth design, but the most important was a reduction of the peripheral speed of the rolls from 1000 to 300 ft. per minute. The higher speed was based upon and approximated the velocity of a falling piece of coal when it entered the rolls, Exhaustive roll tests at the slower speed showed that the same size reduction could be affected with less degradation. The adoption, therefore, of slow-speed, compound geared rolls, especially for breaking the larger sizes, became quite general after 1912. A high-speed roll is shown in Fig. 1 and a slow-speed roll in Fig. 2. Anthracite Crushing Problems.-Crushing anthracite presents the problem of selecting a series of rolls that will produce the greatest percentage of the prepared sizes of nut and over. The size distributions to be expected are shown in Table 1. Coal breaking and crushing practices in anthracite breakers involve the use of equipment for comminuting the following classes of material: 1. Run-of-mine-plus 6 ½ -in. coal. 2. Sized coal-steamboat, broken, egg, stove, nut, and pea. 3. Flat coal--coal that is flat and hence not suitable for the market. 4. Bone--a piece of laminated coal and slate, crushed for the purpose of reclaiming the coal. 5. Breaker refuse, reduced to a size suitable for flushing into a mine for back-filling purposes.

It has been observed that deformation in iron takes place by slip on (110) + {112) + (123) planesl, 2, but in silicon ferrite with low deformation temperatures or high silicon contents (exceeding 4 per cent) the authors have found that slip is confined wholly to (110) planes, at least with small amounts of deformation. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effect of this alteration of slip mechanism on preferred orientations in cold-rolled and recrystallized strips. Incidental observations on the effect of the recrystallization temperature were also made. The numerous determinations of the texture of cold-rolled iron and steel have been in satisfactory agreement as to the principal features of the texture (with the exception of a few conclusions that apparently have been based on insufficient data). The texture is chiefly one in which 11101 directions of the grains lie along the direction of rolling, with a deviation of a few degrees, and in which the (100) planes lie in the plane of the rolled sheet, with a deviation from this position chiefly about the rolling direction as an axis. This deviation about the rolling direction as an axis has been measured by different observers and lies between about 45" and 50" or 60" for iron5, 6, 9 and is usually in the neighborhood of 50" for mild stee16, 7, 8. The range of this deviation is a function of the percentage of total reduction8, 10. Post8 reported that it decreases with increasing percentage reduction, but apparently he studied only the surface material, which Gensamer and Meh17 found to be somewhat differently oriented from the material in the inside of the sheet. McLachlan and Davey10 found that the deviation also decreases with increasing percentage of total reduction for the material in the interior of the sheet and is independent of the percentage of reduction per pass. IN Polk County, Florida, the mining of raw phosphates began some 50 years ago with dredging operations on the Peace River, and in other near-by places by removal of shallow overburden with negroes and wheelbarrows, or with mules and scrapers, and the excavation and screen-ing of deposits found close to the surface. There were many individual operations of comparatively short life. Later steam shovels removed the overburden, and still later hydraulic methods were substituted for the steam shovel. Within the last 10 years large electrically operated drag-lines have almost entirely replaced hydraulic mining for overburden removal. The matrix is still mined by hydraulic giants and pumped to the washer or recovery plant. The many small operations have long since disappeared and the most desirable phosphate lands have gradually been acquired through purchase or merger by the seven companies that are operating in the field today. These companies are producing and selling about 2,000,000 long tons of phosphate per annum, or about two-thirds of what the industry likes to think is the normal output, with 1929 and 1930 in mind. To produce these 2,000,000 long tons of raw phosphate, they mine and treat about 1,000,000 tons of tailings from older and less efficient opera-tions, about 11,000,000 tons of matrix, and remove from above this matrix some 22,000,000 tons of overburden. The mining practice that has made possible the excavation and handling of 34 million tons of material to win but 2 million tons of merchantable product, selling for probably an average of only $4 per long ton when dried, should be of interest to the mining profession, though little has been written of it. The Florida Pebble Field, as it has come to be known, comprises an area (Fig. 1) within a radius of about 18 to 20 miles centering around Mulberry in Polk County, a small town 30 miles east of Tampa, Florida's largest port on the gulf coast.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March,1910.) THE Giroux Consolidated Mines Co. is equipping a five-compartment shaft at Kimberly, Nev., which will serve the Alpha mice. The depth of this shaft, January, 1910, is 963 ft., and of this depth 948 ft. was opened by raising, 15 ft. of sinking was done so that the bearers, collar-set, and three shaft-sets might be installed and concreted, and with this done it was possible to erect the necessary surface-equipment for resuming shaft-timbering on the completion of the raise. The arrangement of the shaft-timbering is shown in Fig. 1. At the 1,000-ft. level of the Alpha, and 750 ft. SW. from the Alpha shaft, a 14- by 18-ft. station was cut, and a 25-h-p. air-hoist *as installed. From here the raising commenced on July 5, 1909. The raise was cut approximately 13 by 21. ft. in area, and supported by timbering with square sets, illustrated in Fig. 2, which shows the division into four compartments. The end compartments, which were used as chutes, had the center girts heavier than in the others on account of the wear from falling rock. The chute-lining was braced by inserting 8- by 8-in. stiffeners parallel to and half way between successive caps. Similarly, the lagging on the wall sides of the cage-way and the compartment for pipes and ladder was stiffened with 4- by 6-in. timbers. In the pipe-and-ladder compartment the chute-stiffeners were reinforced with 8- by 8-in, struts, and as the cage-way was partitioned off by braced lining, there was practically no chance of rock entering the ladder-way in case a chute burst into the cage-way. Over the two center compartments the last two, sets were always bulkheaded with 8- by 12-in. timbers, shown in Fig. 3, and from the lower bulkhead the cage sheave-wheel was suspended. IN many of the old placer-mining districts are still to be found large tracts of gold-bearing gravel not suitable to be worked with a dredge, because the bed is too shallow- or the gulch too narrow. Frequently there is not enough grade to handle the gravel successfully by ground-sluicing or a bedrock flume, or it contains too many boulders to be worked successfully with the ordinary pipe or tube hydraulic elevator. In southwestern Oregon, two practical placer-miners named Ruble, after working for years trying to make money out of placer-ground containing many large boulders, invented and patented a hydraulic elevator of an entirely new type, and one . that has been found to work very successfully in flat' ground and in gravel containing many large boulders. It is a very simple contrivance. A few years ago I acquired the property near Pierce City, Idaho, known as the American placer-mine. Various attempts .bad been made to work this ground. A bed-rock flume had been installed by one company, an Evans elevator by another, and still other methods were tried on a smaller scale. All were unsuccessful. I installed a Ruble elevator, and it has proved very satisfactory. Working under 100-ft. (pipe) head, the 'ground has been handled at a cost of a little less than 8 cents per cubic yard. The conditions at the American mine are exceptionally hard, the boulders being large, heavy, and numerous. Basalt-boulders, up to a size of 16 by 18 by 32 in., have been elevated to a height of 16 or 17 ft., with a 4-in. nozzle-stream, under 100-ft. head. Boulders larger than this size are blasted. At the American mine, a foreman, two pipemen, and two laborers are-required per day of 24 hr. to operate the elevator. With the constantly increasing sales competition, coal to be sold today must meet the test of quality in every respect. The producers must be able to make all marketable sizes that will meet such general requirements as follows: 1. Ash content must be consistently low, depending upon the use to be made of the coal. 2. Sulfur content must be controlled accurately according to requirements. 3. All sizes must be positively free from visible impurities. 4. Free moisture of washed sizes must be reduced to a minimum. 5. The freezing of wet coal in cars must be prevented. 6. The percentage of fines in small mixed sizes must be controlled to give the uniform and proper combustion when used on various types of automatic stokers. 7. The undersize particles or degradation caused by handling must be kept to an absolute minimum in all sizes loaded. Many difficulties may be met in bringing any particular coal to meet these quality requirements, because the extent to which the quality of a coal may be controlled is determined largely by its physical characteristics. Preparation of an Impure Coal Bed The application of modern and scientific methods in the controlled preparation of bituminous coal from a bed in the mid-western field will illustrate the results that can be accomplished by adequate preparation: The bed referred to contains coal inherently excellent as to low ash and other desirable characteristics; in fact, the coal itself is one of the best in the field. It is, however, divided into four layers by dirt bands of soft shale 1 to 2 in. thick. It also contains much sulfur in the form of sulfur lenses and laminated sheets. Horsebacks or rolls varying from 6 in. to 12 ft. in width are encountered in the mining of the bed and heretofore have rendered it practically unworkable. The mines operating in this
