In todayÆs evolving and globalised world, mining companies are being pressured to move beyond compliance towards long-term sustainability and sustainable development. Companies are expected to æengageÆ communities and measure the success of these engagements without a clear understanding of æhowÆ to do this. This move, away from compliance, develops more of a focus on sustainability and æcommunityÆ social responsibility rather than corporate social responsibility. This shift leads to the development of world-class projects that provide sustainable development for people, reduce the incidence of costly delays, and promote good global citizenship for companies. The process of æengagingÆ communities in mining project design and development leads to sustainable development, a stronger license to operate, and a reduction in social and political risk. To create this mutually beneficial relationship between communities and companies, communities must be æengagedÆ in the project development and risk assessment processes as early as possible, preferably during the exploration or the concept phases. How to create this æengagementÆ and manage this risk will be discussed.

"Mining companies routinely invest in improvements to their processing operations, but often these enhancements do not work to full effect.Improvements can be ineffectual because underlying process problems are not identified or prioritised for correction or repair.This is frequently because ‘black box’ solutions deployed to implement process control improvements typically rely on instrumentation to provide data for algorithms to work effectively, and these solutions are often ineffective or disabled at mineral processing sites.There are three key reasons they can fail to deliver: vital instrumentation is not calibrated or functioning as required basic process control and loop tuning was not implemented correctly or is in need of tuning there is an inability to support the ‘black box’ solutions on-site.Many of these problems can be overcome by implementing operational analytics that identify where problems are occurring and prioritise where improvements need to be made.Incorporating operational analytics into process improvement is not a new methodology. It is more a back-to-basics approach to make more efficient use of capital and systems already deployed.Data collection systems, such as the OSIsoft PI System, provide real-time and historical process information for process control experts to analyse and identify areas for improvement. However, most systems are not used effectively. With some simple enabling, data collection systems can provide evidence for prioritising investments in improvements and determining an investment’s effectiveness.MIPAC advocates that the initial step, with analytical evidence, is that clients review the control strategies and implement small influential instrument repairs/calibrations and operator training. The state of sampling practice in South African minerals industry must be appreciated in the context of the changes that the country has recently lived through. These include the entrepreneurship and investment in local mineral developments, the 'unbundling of mineral assets', the rising foreign control of South Africa's mineral assets, developments in the regulatory environment, and the training that has come to the industry through international experts. In terms of their financial contribution the five most important commodities in the South African mining industry include gold, platinum, non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, and coal. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards form the basis for international trade in two of these commodities and have had a steadying influence on sampling practice over the years. The contribution of the minerals industry to the economic well-being of South Africa and the strong financial links between good sampling practice and minerals marketing, has acted as a driver for improved sampling practice. The state of sampling practice at mining operations of the five main commodities was found to be quite widely divergent with 'pockets of sampling excellence' in each of the commodities. The stages of mineral development at mines for each of the commodities have been described in terms of the sampling sites, sampling mechanisms, and associated problems at different stages of mineral production from exploration, through face sampling, blasthole sampling, and in-mine grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical subsampling, process subsampling, and subsampling in the laboratory. In each case the principal errors were identified and their potential impact on value erosion was estimated. In the final analysis it is evident that the greatest problems arise in the early stage of mineral development, and that ferrous metals and coal are particularly susceptible to loss of value through poor sampling practice. Several examples of value lost through poor sampling at the marketing stage that arise from breaching contract specifications, either in terms of grade or sizing, are described. The conclusion is that larger companies with larger ore deposits and greater human, financial, and capital resources are probably more compliant with 'best sampling practice' than smaller companies. Finally the message that equipment suppliers are sending is that business is booming and the awakened awareness of the issues around sampling practice are translating into rands and cents spent on improved sampling equipment.

After considerable input from the mining industry, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) finalised National Instrument 43-101: Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects. This Instrument, which became law across Canada on 1 February 2001, applies to all technical public disclosure on mineral projects and requires all technical disclosure to be based on the work of a æqualified personÆ (QP). While the QP is quite similar to the Competent Person in Australia there are important differences when it comes to all disclosure. This paper will summarise the main areas in which the Instrument introduces major changes to Canadian disclosure standards on mineral projects including the role and responsibility of the qualified person; the increased requirements to file technical reports; the incorporation by reference of the October 2000 CIM definitions of resources and reserves and additional rules governing written disclosure of scientific and technical information. In October 2001, eight months after the implementation of NI 43-101, the CSA compiled a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and CSA responses to assist mining industry participants and their advisors in understanding and applying NI-43-101. This document has been well received by industry. The CSA plans to update the FAQs when further guidance is requested. Two industry committees have been established to provide the CSA with technical advice on the application of NI 43-101. As recommended by the Ontario Securities Commission/Toronto Stock Exchange Mining Standards Task Force, the CSA has established an external industry advisory committee û the Mining Technical Advisory and Monitoring Committee (MTAMC) û to monitor the application of NI 43-101 and advise the CSA on industry and professional developments. The role of the CSA-Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Working Committee on Reserves and Resources is to ensure that the future changes and updates to the CIM Standards can be efficiently and effectively incorporated in NI 43-101. During this first year, the Canadian securities regulators have seen an improvement in the quality of disclosure on mineral projects, which will increase investor confidence in the industry.

Poor standards of electrical installation and maintenance continue to contribute to electrical related fatalities and injury risk in the mining industry. Electrical isolation has the potential to initiate major unwanted events (MUEs) and as such requires thorough analysis to demonstrate adequate management. There have been 719 incidents related to accidental contact with electricity over the past five years in the Queensland mining industry (Queensland Government DME, 2012a, 2012b) with the last fatality being recorded in 1997 (MESA, 2012).A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has developed a form of a safety case using the four-layered æCoal Mine Safety Regime (CMSR)Æ approach. The CMSR is transparent and robust as it includes full site risk assessment and special issues risk assessment to be demonstrated as part of the process.The practical application of the CMSR has been demonstrated using a longwall mining case study site, where a unique 11 kV armoured face conveyor (AFC) is in operation. The case study has involved progressive application of the requirements of each layer of the CMSR (see Figure 1) to high voltage (HV) electrical isolation related issues. The project has specifically concentrated on understanding and analysing two high priority MUEs, electric shock and unplanned movement of equipment, through Layer 1 analysis. These two MUEs are an important part of the project as they have demonstrated the steps that may be taken to satisfy the risk management processes at Layer 1 of the CMSR and have contributed to resolving issues at the other three layers of the CMSR.The analysis of HV electrical isolation has been used as an exemplar to demonstrate the CMSR process and its practical application. The CMSR is applicable to major/principal hazards management as identified by the New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions.This paper provides an overview of the development of a form of safety case using the CMSR and introduces the case study application for HV electrical isolation risk management at underground coal mines focusing on the major unwanted event of electric shock.This project provides the mining industry with a documented, publicly accessible, form of safety case using the CMSR approach for the first time.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Griffiths, D, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. I once read an æarticleÆ in FHM Magazine entitled æThe Coolest Jobs There Ever WasÆ. It was about a group of guys who were pursuing careers that any person on the planet would just kill for. I distinctly remember drooling over the pages, thinking how much I would love to be Michael SchumacherÆs Chief Engineer at Ferrari, or the Principal Designer and Tester for one of the big Dutch rollercoaster companies. From that moment on, I decided that I wanted a career that was cool enough to make it into the pages of that article. Throughout my time at university, I always had that article in the back of my mind. As a result I constantly wondered about what sort of job I could end up with once I left university. More importantly, I wondered if FHM would be banging down my door to put me in the magazine! After a long and stressful job hunting process (in between completing a thesis and studying for exams) I finally managed to land myself a job with Orica Mining Services. I can honestly say I didnÆt know what to expect when I first joined Orica. Most of my friends ended up working for big mining companies, while I was offered a position with one of the biggest suppliers to these mining companies. However, I had a feeling when I was discussing the role with my future supervisor during the interview process that the job was going to be awesome. I have now spent a year working for Orica and I absolutely love it! While I feel that my job is worthy of being in that FHM article, unfortunately, I donÆt think I am going to get my opportunity to be in the magazine. Apparently I donÆt look too good in a bikini! However, I would love to have the opportunity to discuss the journey that I have taken so far û from my time as an environmental science graduate, then moving on to mining engineering, to now, being part of the Orica Mining Services Graduate Program. My suggestion is to use this paper as a resource. I have learnt during my time at university, as well as my time in the workforce, that the best people you can learn from are your peers. Take what you feel is relevant from the paper; hopefully it will help guide you in shaping your own career.

Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements com- menced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and com- pared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Program- mable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

The ability to precondition (weaken) a rock mass to enhance caving (cavability and fragmentation) is becoming increasingly important, as more potential caving deposits are in stronger rock masses, and at greater depth. This paper discusses a full-scale blast preconditioning experiment conducted at the Cadia East mining operation, including quantification of visible and microscale blast damage. From a cave mining perspective, the objectives of the experiment were to quantify the effect of confined blasting on rock mass characteristics relevant to enhanced caving, and to provide calibration data for the purpose of numerically modelling alternative blast preconditioning designs.The experiment was located approximately 360 m below surface, and consisted of two f165 mm blastholes (60 m vertical holes) and eight HQ diamond drill monitoring holes (35 m horizontal holes). The diamond drill holes were used to sample the rock mass before and after the blast at varying distances from the blastholes. Rock mass blast damage was quantified both visually using core logging, and on a microscale using LABYRINTH® statistical analysis of X-ray microtomography data. Results from the experiment indicated four major findings:on the visible scale, the experiment indicated a 147 per cent increase in the number of hairline cracks within 5 m (p value = 0.015), but no change in geotechnical logging parametersmicroscale tomography of intact rock samples indicate significant localised intact rock damage up to 4 m from the blasthole (p = 0.007)preliminary point load test results indicate that blast damage results in a significant reduction in intact rock strength (p = 0.050)the significant increase in porosity and microfracture size associated with damage provides a mechanism for reduced intact rock strength due to confined blasting.CITATION:Stewart, P C, Brunton, I, Francis, D and Chitombo, G, 2016. A case study is presented that details the safety journey at a North American project involving two major contracts: a 1000 m shaft recovery and rehabilitation, and the development of a drainage gallery in a large open pit operation. In the early stages of the contracts, there were a number of incidents that created tension between the owner and contractor, which resulted in the contractor being placed on a final warning with almost imminent potential termination. As a result of this, it was agreed to initiate a focused safety recovery plan as a ‘last chance’.Over a period of two years, the engagement and consequent performance of the contractor was turned around, steadily working to set it up for success such that in one of the contract work areas, a record of ‘one year LTI (lost time injury) free’ was achieved. The journey involved the owner and the contractor teams working cohesively to educate all parties in the safety requirements and, most importantly, providing the context and understanding for certain requirements being put in place. Early on in the process, it was recognised that the owner team unknowingly was an impediment in that they did not fully understand the safety requirements and so was not able to lead the way for the contractor effectively. The journey to rectify the situation was supported and followed up by focused engagement with the project team, which generated a progressive improvement in a very challenging environment.In particular, the contractor turnaround was significant and of enough value for the contractor to ultimately export some of the safety systems from this site to other contract sites. Quay Magnesium Limited (QMG) listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late September 2004 having raised approximately A$30 million with the object of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a 15 000 tpa magnesium alloy production facility in Nanjing, China. Site construction commenced in February 2005, with installation of all major components completed by the end of October 2005. Hot commissioning was simultaneously commenced with the final stages of installation, leading to the first stage of continuous ingot casting by mid November 2005. Since that time, ramp-up to the name plate capacity has been undertaken. This presentation highlights some of the more significant technical and logistical hurdles that have had to be overcome in order to meet the high quality product specifications required by a range of QMG customers.

The world-class Golden Mile gold deposit in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia is part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) operation, which is wholly owned by Northern Star Resources Limited. Current mining operations across the Golden Mile is dominated by the large Fimiston Open Pit, which is over 4 km long, 1 km wide and 600 m deep. It is part of a larger mineralised system that stretches over 8 km and includes the Mt Charlotte Underground Mine, which is also operated by KCGM, as well as numerous historical open pit and underground mines. This mineralised system has been continuously mined for over 125 years and is set to continue well into the future. The Golden Mile deposit is in the Norseman Wiluna Greenstone Belt which is made up of a series of mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that have been structurally deformed and intruded by granitic rocks. There are two main styles of mineralisation across the Golden Mile. Firstly, the Fimiston style, which consists of shear hosted Golden Mile lodes with abundant sulfides and tellurides and secondly, the Charlotte style that comprises younger stockwork veins. Fimiston style mineralisation is the primary style of mineralisation within the Fimiston Open Pit. Historically, in excess of 3500 m of underground development and over 755 stopes were mined prior to the consolidation of the area and the commencement of Fimiston Open Pit operation. Old underground workings, known as voids, are either empty or backfilled and extend to more than 1.2 km below surface. Although they are a routine part of mining operations at KCGM, voids pose a significant challenge for the geology team in terms of planning and executing exploration and grade control drilling, geological modelling, grade and tonnage estimation, drill and blast design and execution, marking up ore block designs, mining, and reconciliation. This paper will discuss the various challenges faced by the geology team due to the presence of voids, solutions used to overcome some of these challenges and the results of these activities.

This paper presents an application of the newly developed risk-cost-benefit (RCB) framework to support risk management decisions for the selection of wall monitoring technologies at an open cut mine site. The RCB framework quantitatively assessed the risk of unstable slope-induced wall failure and its impact on both loss of life and coal recovery. The RCB framework was utilised in the selection of an optimum group of risk-controls to effectively manage the risk of wall failure to ensure safety and optimal production occurred. The RCB framework incorporates mathematical modules that integrated RCB calculations and risk-control effectiveness assessments to determine the risk reduction and financial impact of the examined safety initiatives.This paper provides an overview of the five-staged RCB framework, incorporating the RCB decision support tools, RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its application to slope stability risk management at the case study site. The RCB charts are designed to display a balance between risk, cost and benefit for easy interpretation by decision makers to support the objective selection of an optimum suite of risk-controls. The RCB analysis revealed that a combination of ævisual inspections, automatic extensometers and radarÆ for fast- and slow-wall failures with structure were sufficient to reduce the probability of loss of life (PLoL) to the æModerateÆ zone as defined by the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS, 2007) for the case study site. The new framework presented in this paper provides a method to effectively determine the suitability of risk-controls and supports industry efforts to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).CITATION:Kizil, G V, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. Since the independent review of fatal accidents in the mining industry carried out by Dr Sean Brady (the ‘Brady Review’), High Reliability Organisations (HROs) and their operating principles have been discussed across the Queensland mining sector. HROs are organisations said to consistently avoid serious failures, reliably delivering their organisational objectives despite operating in environments characterised by high levels of inherent risk and/or operational complexity. HRO concepts have previously found application in other similarly hazardous industries to mining. However, as Hopkins (2009) pointed out, HROs ‘are very elusive creatures that inhabit the realm of theory more than the real world’. The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) with support from the Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health initiated a review of how HRO principles can be translated to the mining industry. The review was conducted by Noetic, an Australian management consulting company that specialises in hazardous industries, including mining and metals, and has prior experience applying HRO theory.

Analyses of scheelite from all the known scheelite fields in the South Island of New Zealand have shown that the scheelites are essentially molybdenum-free. The scheelites are almost stoichiometric CaWO4, except for some strontium replacing the calcium, with a maximum of 0·92 per cent SrO. Variation in strontium content appears to be' related to the metamorphic grade of the enclosing rocks.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the prestressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels.An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct extends the full length of the 4.6 km-long twin two-lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approximately 4.3 km) were constructed using two 12.4 m diameter double-shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit-out challenges. A key component of the civil fit-out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels, which was designed as a precast solution.The slabs, which each measure 8.62 m long × 2.0 m wide × 200 mm thick and weigh close to 9?t, need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space-proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100 mm.This paper tells the story of how the Transcity Joint Venture (JV) tunnel fit-out team comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system in solving this challenging problem. The Mount Carlton project in Queensland's North East sits on a high-sulphidation epithermal style deposit rich in gold, copper and silver. Mt Carlton is an open pit mining operation with ore processed using a primary crusher, single stage SAG mill and flotation to produce a concentrate for sale. Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) was involved in the original design of the comminution circuit and the project was commissioned in late 2012, with first concentrate shipped in March 2013. When Evolution sought to optimise the project in 2015, OMC was invited to assist by undertaking a circuit review to identify opportunities for the optimisation. During 2016, the Mt Carlton site team implemented the optimisation strategies developed in conjunction with OMC. These included reconfiguring the SAG mill discharge arrangement, reducing the average ball diameter and allowing the mill to operate at higher speed and under more autogenous conditions. Cyclone operation was changed to constant pressure and the vortex finder size was decreased. The combined strategies improved energy efficiency and allowed higher SAG mill power utilisation. The additional power has been used to increase throughput by 2.4 per cent while achieving a 27µm reduction in product size (P80) to gain downstream recovery improvements. The reduction in grind size has been achieved with only 6.8 per cent increase in specific energy consumption because of a 6.5 per cent increase in grinding efficiency. The circuit product size is also notably more consistent due to the improvements made to the cyclones, providing benefit to the downstream flotation circuit. A significant decrease in ball consumption was also gained, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in operating cost.This paper will discuss the circuit design, start up and will detail the changes made during the optimisation and why these were successful.CITATION:Putland, B, Lovatt, I, Cervillin, A and Schwann, D, 2018. Western Australia has often been referred to as the fly-in, fly-out capital of the world. Fly-in, fly-out is a commonly used practice in Western Australia due to the geographic size and isolated location of the vast resource projects. In the State today, approximately half of all resource sector employees operate on a fly-in, fly-out basis, with a minority utilising drive-in, drive-out arrangements. fly-in, fly-out arrangements are generally beneficial from a sustainability perspective, delivering significant economic, social and environmental benefits to regional communities, the State and nation as a whole. Skills shortages and labour supply issues mean that the industry will be required to discover new ways of attracting and retaining employees, one of which is the adoption of fly-in, fly-out work journey arrangements. By 2015, the minerals sector in Australia will need to employ 70 000 more employees than it currently employs to achieve predicted increases in output. Of the 70 000 additional employees required, 42 000 will be required in Western Australia, almost 15 000 in Queensland and approximately 5000 in both New South Wales and South Australia. The fly-in, fly-out lifestyle as a preferred method of employment should be recognised as a valid lifestyle choice by all members of the community, offering a profound improvement in the quality of life for large numbers of employees and family members. It should be acknowledged that whilst fly-in, fly-out is a preferred option for many companies and their employees, individuals who make a choice to engage in fly-in, fly-out must balance the difficulties associated with the work û isolation and separation from family and friends û against the economic and lifestyle benefits that the work offers. This paper aims to illustrate the significant steps that the resources sector has taken to facilitate the fly-in, fly-out choice by ensuring that the commute option is a safe, attractive and manageable work journey arrangement.
