This case study assesses the application of Mine-to-Mill optimisation combined with Whittle Consulting’s Prober<sup>®</sup> economic optimisation for the purpose of economic value uplift in open cut base and precious metal operations. The study extends the application of these optimisation methods to incorporate the recent practice of Ultra High Intensity Blasting (UHIB) developed by Orica Mining Services. The case study deposit known as “Marvin” is a copper/gold porphyry resource that is commonly used in optimisation software training and industry case studies. It has many similarities to Newcrest’s Cadia Hill open pit mine in NSW. Prior desktop research and industrial trials employed static assessments of Mine-to-Mill effects. No prior work other than a Whittle Consulting client study, has sought to assess the impact of variable fragmentation on enterprise economic value. This paper presents an analysis of significant Australian-based R&D programs focussed on the minerals industry, which was commissioned by CRC ORE. The landscape analysis may assist organisations with R&D management issues including program creation, program/partner selection, portfolio management, and public policy settings. The dataset was collated early in 2020, and contains programs being conducted by or with Australian-based ‘Research Service Providers’ (RSPs), most notably Universities and CSIRO. It does not include R&D being conducted in-house by mining and METS companies, or by them with other organisations that are not RSP’s. The dataset contains 65 R&D programs, with total annual cash funding of $229m (70% from industry and 30% from government). The total funding compares unfavourably with the combined R&D expenditure of Australian universities and CSIRO of over $12b, and minerals industry export revenues of over $200b. The R&D landscape is analysed by program numbers and funding, technical domain, geography, and funding source. Areas of relative strength are noted in ‘mineral processing’, CSIRO Minerals, and the CRC program. Areas of relative weakness are noted in ‘bulk materials handling and logistics’, ‘tailings and waste management’, and ‘social and community’. The field of preconcentration is noted as a current area of R&D strength, but it is under significant threat with the impending completion of CRC ORE. The overall R&D landscape is characterised by a majority of small-scale programs, low levels of industry coordination, a low focus on step-change innovation, and total funding lower than should be expected for such a large critical industry. It is hoped that key stakeholders in the Australian minerals industry, particularly governments, and mining and METS companies, reflect on the analysis and act to address holistic weaknesses.

Chromite was recorded among the rare minerals in the natural beach sand concentrates on the coast of Northern New South Wales by Whitworth(l) in 1931, and the commercial production of zircon and rutile from these beach sands has yielded concentrates of ilmenite with small amounts of chromium. The chromite is a detrimental impurity in the utilisation of the ilmenite, and the difficulties that attend the separation of the small amount of chromite from the ilmunite have raised suggestions from time to time that chromite occurs with ilmenite in composite grains. The absence of such composite grains and the nature of the chromite grains has been indicated by the following mineragraphic examination of magnetic concentrates containing chromite which were prepared by the C.S.I.R. Ore Dressing Laboratory, Melbourne University, from ilmenite concentrates from beach sands at Norrie's Head, County Rous, New South Wales and Stradbroke Island, Queensland.The magnetic concentrates from each locality are divided into five fractions, and the No. 1 concentrate is the most highly magnetic and the tailing the least magnetic. A fundamental component of grade control at Tarmoola Mine has been the monitoring of assaying through quality assurance programs. The programs have concentrated on issues related to accuracy and precision of leachwell and fire assay techniques, sample preparation and grade variability within a sample. An outcome of monitoring has been identification of shortcomings in the application of assaying techniques to Tarmoola ore types that contain coarse particulate gold. Leachwell has shown satisfactory precision since introduction as the primary assay technique in October 1998 but leachwell accuracy and recovery through comparison with fire assay techniques has identified bias. A bias toward higher fire assays in grades above 2 g/t invoked an investigation into the cause of the discrepancy between leachwell and fire assay. Testwork evaluated Leachwell assay recovery by varying leach time duration, which showed that by increasing the leach time improved recovery significantly. Monitoring of leachwell against fire assay had shown that a leachwell (200 g) with a one hour leach has under-called grade when compared with fire assay by up to 18 per cent, on average, for Tarmoola ore types. Alternatively, optimisation of the leachwell assaying technique using a 200 g pulp and a two hour leach has returned, on average, higher assays than fire assay by up to eight per cent. Testwork on screen fire assays, duplicate assays and fire assay to extinction has demonstrated assay variability associated with coarse, particulate gold. The variability and distribution of gold in Tarmoola ore types has emphasised the importance of high quality sample preparation for leachwell assaying to ensure liberation of gold to leaching solutions. Assay quality assurance protocols are vital to assay data integrity and enable confidence in delineation of ore-waste boundaries and provide early recognition of problematic assaying periods and isolation of grade control practices, which depart from performance standards critical to the operation.

There are several well-known, extensively researched and tested methods of suppressing a coalmine methane and coal dust explosion. The choice of method used is dependent on the legislative requirements of each country, which in turn are influenced by mining conditions in that jurisdiction. For example, seam gas content and the dustiness of the coal will combine to create the hazard, while the physical and chemical properties of the seam might influence the possibility of ignition sources such as frictional ignitions. The mining method and layout will also influence the choice of preventative or proactive suppression devices. The decision as to which method is approved and adopted should be based on currently tested and available technology and the latest research outcomes, and should be subjected to a rigorous risk assessment, since a methane explosion propagating into a coal dust explosion cannot be countenanced.Every new technology must undergo stringent tests and these tests must be certified by accredited research facilities or laboratories. Upon approval, an explosion suppression system or the critical components of such a system should be tested in a more realistic environment. This environment can ideally be found in an operating underground mining section for evaluation purposes. Based on the insight gathered in such an environment, a realistic evaluation of the effectiveness of a potential system can be carried out. The explosion suppression system described in this paper has been tested on numerous occasions at accredited test facilities. The technology described in this paper has been used in various applications in underground coalmines and has been adapted to fulfil and exceed the requirements set out for methods currently in use. Good morning and thank you for the opportunity to address this yearÆs New Zealand Minerals Conference.   As you have already heard from the Associate Minister of Energy, the Government believes that the minerals industry is an important part of our economy. In particular, our coal and lignite resources have the potential to play an important role in New ZealandÆs energy sector as both a primary fuel and as a means to produce electricity.   The Government has taken a keen interest in the primary fuel sector given the declining reserves of natural gas sector. The energy sector is a key driver of economic growth and it is therefore critical that we have a reliable supply of primary fuel as part of the energy mix.   In a global sense, New Zealand is like many other countries regarding the need to secure energy for the future. Natural gas will be a key bridging fuel in the transition from an energy market based on fossil fuels to one based on renewables over the next century.   However, natural gas as a solution to this energy transition has some pragmatic limitations for New Zealand. There is uncertainty as to when new domestic reserves of gas can be discovered and developed. And the alternative of imported LNG poses a number of costs and risks to the economy.   New ZealandÆs coal resources are vast-estimated to be enough to last hundreds of years at the current rate of extraction. The main question is can extraction be increased and sustained to meet the demand of domestic power producers and at the same time meet commitments to lucrative international markets?   At this point it is appropriate for me to place coal into context with Governments overarching policy objectives for energy. The Government has stated objectives for the energy sector emphasising energy efficiency and an increased focus of renewable energy, while still ensuring security of supply and certainty as to energy costs and risk. Coal certainly can make a contribution to these objectives going forward.

The primary mine planning focus during early study phases of future mining projects is Life of Asset ore production and grade quality, this will always be the situation. While waste schedule optimisation is generally considered in the latter study phases nearing execution for a limited number of schedule periods only and not a true optimisation considering all attributes such as waste destination location, design, cycle time and closure. This can be particularly applicable in large multi-pit bulk mining operations where one approach to meet Life of Asset ore tonnes and grade targets has been to maintain pit development flexibility resulting in large open pit areas and substantial expit Overburden Storage Area (OSA). The presence of reactive metal sulfide minerals in waste rock contributes to the hazard of spontaneous combustion in dumps, as these minerals react with air and water entering the dump at ambient temperatures to form various mineral products and significant heat. This reaction series can also be an initiator of self-heating of carbonaceous material present in the waste rocks if sufficiently high temperatures are reached. Characterisation of these reactive minerals has primarily been to assess the risk of acid mine drainage, which is not necessarily an indicator of spontaneous combustion risk. No systematic testing procedure has been adopted by industry to assess the spontaneous combustion propensity of the waste rock. As a consequence, the principal management strategy for spontaneous combustion has been a reactive approach of dealing with events as they arise.Recent advances in adiabatic oven-testing have enabled more definitive assessment of the spontaneous combustion propensity of coals, including the quantification of the accelerating influence of reactive pyrite (Beamish and Beamish, 2011, 2012; Beamish, Lin and Beamish, 2012). This same test procedure has been used to assess the self-heating performance of metal concentrates and is therefore amenable to assessing the metal sulfide oxidation process from low ambient temperatures. The data obtained from such testing can be used to quantify the more prone waste rock sequences of a mineral deposit in advance of mining. The Hidden Secret ore body is located within the Mt Charlotte underground mining system in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Mineralisation of the Hidden Secret ore body is lode style and therefore differs from the typical economical mineralisation mined at Mt Charlotte and consequently demanded a novel approach to the mining methodology. The ore body is lens like in shape, extending 200m along strike, 210m vertically, and dipping at 55 degrees. The lode width varies from 1.5m at the extremities to over 22m in the central zone of the ore body. Average grade is 3.4 Au grams per tonne. The initial mining methodology was Modified Avoca utilising Longhole Open Stoping with pillars, in a bottom up stoping sequence. However, as Hidden Secret became better defined and wider than initially modelled, it was identified that a high portion of gold would remain in the pillars and other mining concerns emerged such as remote backfilling large open voids and potentially unsafe vertical standoff distances between levels and wide open stopes. A re-evaluation of this method was undertaken and a new approach adapting a variation of Avoca methodology was identified to remove the rib pillars and replace them with a sill pillar separating the 4 levels into 2 distinct blocks. This new approach provided an immediate advantage by removing the bogger backfilling activity from the same level of the active stope front, enabling stope drilling and prepping to occur during the backfilling cycle. Bogging productivity has also improved as the fired ore is funnelled to the draw point by the backfill rill, significantly reducing the requirement for remote bogging thus improving bogging productivity. This mining method is currently in progress in the first of the two mining blocks and is on track to realise the targeted recovery of 7,700 ounces from the rib pillars.

In this paper, the pretreatment of concentrates by roller press was present to improve the granulation of blends comprising some 30 per cent iron ore concentrates and enhance the sintering performance. It is shown that by pretreatment of fine concentrates through roller press, the content of +3 mm fractions of granulation mixture and sinter mixture permeability are elevated by ten per cent and 35 per cent. In the meantime, a sinter productivity increase from 1.51 - 1.62 t.m-2.h-1 is attainted in pot tests with similar sinter tumble index and at lower coke rate. The mechanism of the pretreatment of concentrates process to improve sintering performance of fine iron ore concentrates was demonstrated by mineralogy that better permeability help form more calcium ferrite and good microstructure of sinter, further proven by the better metallurgical performance of sinter.

The usual focus of papers on fatty acid collector action in non-sulfide flotation is on the adsorption of the carboxylate and/or neutral molecule species at the mineral-solution interface. Little attention is paid as to whether or not the solution conditions correspond to true solutions, micellar and other self-assembly objects or precipitates. Our examination of the solution chemistry of the important fatty acid collector, oleic acid, has revealed that many, if not most investigators set their experimental conditions to be in micellar or precipitate domains while arguing, often by implication, that they have only solute species present. We have investigated the equilibrium solution domains usually encountered in studies of oleic acid flotation of such minerals as barite, calcite and fluorite. The alkaline earth-fatty acid and liquid oleic acid precipitate phases exert a strong influence on the solution chemistry, a fact not often appreciated in many studies.

The concept of a ‘critical velocity zone’ in the longwall goaf environment for the development of a spontaneous combustion event has been supported by numerical modelling. However, there is no experimental data available for Australian coals to show ventilation effects on the self-heating incubation behaviour of broken coal in the longwall goaf. A preliminary study using incubation testing has been completed on three high volatile bituminous coals (A, B and C) with R70 self-heating rate values of 3.86°C/h, 3.15°C/h and 2.09°C/h and moisture contents of 11.3 per cent, 3.9 per cent and 4.7 per cent, respectively. Mass to flow rates used in the adiabatic oven reaction vessel have been selected to be indicative of a sluggish, natural air leakage and medium ventilation environment. Under a sluggish ventilation flow rate all three coals incubate to thermal runaway in minimum time frames of 2.8–3.1 years, 34–42 days and 79–95 days, respectively. When the ventilation flow rate is increased to natural air leakage, coal A with the highest R70 value and highest moisture content selfheats to 28°C above mine ambient temperature before heat loss takes over due to moisture evaporation. However, both Coals B and C at this flow rate incubate to thermal runaway in a shorter time frame than under sluggish flow. At the medium ventilation flow rate, only Coal B incubates to thermal runaway, albeit after a significant extended period of time. These results show how important it is to determine the heat balance between the coal intrinsic reactivity (as indicated by the R70 value) and moisture content. The results also have implications for the possible location of the ‘critical velocity zone’ and subsequent hotspot development and migration.

The ZA-27 zinc base alloy was poured into cylindrical moulds and solidified under different conditions ie normal freezing and unidirectional freezing. In addition a cylindrical ingot with rheocast material was obtained by stopping the stirring action and, at a specific solid fraction, gravity casting it into a graphite mould. It was observed that the material obtained under normal freezing conditions is likely to present both segregation and inverted pipe. In contrast, the unidirectional solidified and the rheocast cylinders showed the absence of inverted pipe. The segregation pattern was quite irregular in the rheocast ingot while such segregation was more uniform in the unidirectional solidified cylinder. By virtue of these observations, the inverted pipe formation may be ascribed to the interdendritic flow, while the irregular segregation pattern in the rheocast ingot may be attributed to an irregular distribution of the liquid and solid fraction along such a cylinder.

Efficient blasting requires constant vigilance with respect to the actual layout being used in the field. Objective measurement techniques are required in laying out a pattern as the 'by eye' or 'thumb suck' methods cannot guarantee consistent results in layout. Erratic blast results are the consequence of such an approach. In a case study at Sons of Gwalia mine, it was demonstrated that incorrect front burdens had a snowballing effect on otherwise carefully laid out blasts, resulting in both excessive amounts of boulders caused by preconditioning of bench fronts and tops, and tight digging. Both problems caused lower excavator productivity and excessive excavator damage, as well as making it difficult to set out subsequent blasts correctly. Several field measurement methods are available to aid in determining correct blast layouts and one is described in this paper.

The constructionhunnelling industry in Hong Kong has taken an upturn during the last few years due to the commencement of works to relocate the International Airport to Chek Lap Kok Island. The Airport Core Program consists of ten individual projects including roads, landfill, bridges and tunnels to build the airport and link it to the mainland of Hong Kong. Part of one of these projects is Cheung Ching Tunnel located on Tsing Yi Island. The proposed tunnel consists of a 1.6 km twin tube road tunnel through the island's central ridge, taking three lanes of traffic each way. Each tunnel is 16 m wide - (the widest road tunnel in Hong Kong) and are 10 m high. ICI Explosives (China) saw an opportunity to supply bulk explosives to the Cheung Ching tunnel and contacted ICI Australia to determine availability of a bulk system for tunnel blasting, and assist in its introduction. This paper discusses the methodology behind developing that bulk system to suit a large tunnel drill and blast operation. It also looks at the problems encountered along the way, from the development of the product to the application of the system in the tunnel and the eventual success of introducing a bulk system into a large tunnelling project.

In Japan, evaluation of rock mass is crucial in mountain tunnels that are constructed using the NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) to determine the support pattern that in turns determine the final support structure of the tunnel. The current evaluation method is highly dependent on the observations of on-site expert engineers that grades the rock mass in four levels across nine criteria: A. Condition of tunnel face. B. Condition of excavated surface. C. Compressive rock strength. D. Weathering. E. Spacing of discontinuity. F. Condition of discontinuity. G. Orientation of discontinuity. H. Spring water. I. Water degradation. However, in recent years, the number of said experts are decreasing rapidly due to labour shortage caused mainly by an aging population and declining birth rates. This is one of the biggest challenges that the construction sector currently faces, and this may affect the efficiency of tunnel construction projects in the future. Thus, this study proposes the implementation of a deep learning tool called the convolutional neural network (CNN) to quantitatively evaluate rock fractures on tunnel face. In addition, Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) is applied to visualise CNN, as well as verify the applicability of CNN to the evaluation of rock fractures. In other words, by creating heat maps of tunnel face images, CNN is utilised to evaluate rock mass in categories that are associated with discontinuities. The CNN model is most accurate when six convolution layers, four pooling layers, and three dense layers are used. This yields an accuracy of 75.0~88.0 per cent. Thus, the CNN model is verified to be feasible method to evaluate rock fractures.

The mining industry faces complex and urgent challenges driven by an increasing demand for raw materials, and a socially demanding globalised world. The extraction of primary raw materials is today more important than ever as one of the cornerstones towards a sustainable future since the increasing demand for the raw materials required for the energy transition. In the last three years, leading countries as USA, China, Canada, Australia, and the European Union (EU) have developed and adopted strategies to enhance domestic extraction capabilities, diversifying sources, fostering innovation in recycling, and promoting international collaboration related to critical raw materials. On 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law in the USA, in June 2023, the Australian Critical Minerals Strategy 2023–2030 was published and in March 2024, the Council of the EU adopted the European Critical Raw Materials Act. On the other hand, raw materials extraction is facing higher environmental and safety standards and regulations, as well as scrutiny from the broader public. Regrettable environmental accidents as tailing dam failures or acid mine drainage occurrences have led to a general distrust of mining activities leaving mining companies with the dual imperative of increasing output while implementing sustainability, decarbonisation, and circularity as a core value in their production processes. This challenging environment offers the opportunity to enhance ‘blue mining’ (BM) as a sustainable holistic approach that integrates the principles needed to plan sustainable, reliable, and responsible mines for today’s and future generations by implementing the principles of circular economy (CE). This requires a fundamental shift from the traditional linear economy approach to a sustainable, circular economy strategy. At its essence, BM encapsulates four crucial aspects – energy, ergonomics, water, and circularity and integrates these four aspects into integrative mine planning, defining clear goals and objectives from the ‘blueprint’ of a mine towards a beneficial post-mining activity. Its implementation can lead to maximisation of resources beyond the life of the extractive mine and sustainable use of materials by integrating the principles of circular economy and multiuse mine, see Figure 1. These concepts complement and recognise the need to minimise environmental and social impacts while advancing economic development. Finally, this contribution explains the requirements and challenges of moving from linear to dynamic planning approaches under the BM concept. This way, BM stands as an approach that can contribute to the mining industry receiving necessary approvals and support from society leading to a long-term transformation of the industry’s image.

The measurement of error in assays collected as part of a mineral exploration program or mining operation, including errors introduced during sampling, sample preparation, or geochemical analysis, historically has been undertaken in a variety of ways. Different parameters have been used to describe the magnitude of relative error and each of these parameters is related to the standard measure of relative error, the coefficient of variation. Calculation of the coefficient of variation can be undertaken in a variety of ways; however, only one produces unbiased estimates of measurement error: the root mean square coefficient of variation calculated from the individual coefficients of variation. Recent changes to environmental legislation and trends in the environmental regulation of mining in the Northern Territory are being driven by (among other factors) Federal Government policies and international agreements on the environment. These trends are discussed and the expected application of the NT Water Quality Management Strategy (based on the National Water Quality Objectives) over the next few years is examined with respect to mine environmental management practices. Some of the potential conflicts and changes in approach which may develop are identified and examples discussed. Proactive means of integrating trends in environmental legislation with mine planning and waste management are discussed.
