At mines with low tonnes per vertical metre, like the Jundee Mine in Western Australia, operated by Newmont Asia Pacific, high development rates across multiple mining areas are critical to achieving the delivery outlined, or promised, in the annual business plan. The challenge is to deliver the short-term requirements while keeping in balance with the long-term strategic direction. Newmont Jundee has developed a system called æMine Planning by QuartersÆ that integrates the planning process with the business process in one end-to-end continuum. Short-, medium- and long-term schedules are reviewed and updated by applying four integrated subprocesses, which capture new information as it becomes available. The four subprocesses are: resource development planning û evaluating mineral resource,reserve development planning û preliminary design for new reserves,mine operating planning û final mine design for reserves, andmine production planning û detailed plans for stoping a proved reserve. Commercial mine planning software is used in these subprocesses to facilitate the flow of information into a central storage æhubÆ for uploading into the rolling business plan. A regular and consistent quarterly review helps to identify and qualify areas of business risk at an early stage, allowing time to plan for contingency and minimise the impact of the risk.

The Accha-Yanque zinc belt in southernPeru is a major zinc-lead rich metallogenic province. In the belt are comprised several non-sulfide-type occurrences, extending on the periphery of the Yauri-Apurfmac batholith (Oligocene-Miocene). Zinc mineralisation at Accha (almost fully oxidised) occurs in breccias of sedimentary and tectonic origin in the limestone of the Ferrobamba Fm (Middle to Upper Cretaceous). Non-sulfide association consists mainly of smithsonite and hemimorphite replacing both primary ore minerals and carbonate host rocks. Mn(hydr)oxides and Zn-clays (sauconite), can be locally very abundant. Differences in mineralogy of the ore and gangue minerals, as well as the composition of the host rock can have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption, and therefore on the economic value of the deposit. The integration of iron rejection as hematite with the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process has been investigated on the laboratory scale. The two-stage pressure leach process is applicable for a greenfield zinc plant, or for replacement of the conventional roast-leach circuit in an existing zinc plant. An excess of zinc concentrate is used to accomplish acid neutralisation in the first stage of pressure leaching, and the residual concentrate in the first stage residue is treated with an excess of acid solution in the second stage of pressure leaching to yield high zinc extraction. Integration of hematite precipitation with this process allows for the potential sale of the iron residue, greatly decreasing the residue disposal problem. Two flowsheets containing the desirable features of both of these processes are described in this paper, along with laboratory Results.

This paper presents a quantitative assessment model for the assessment of environmental load in gold production, which is based on environmental ecology, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and artificial neural network. In LCA evaluation indexes include resource consumption, energy consumption, gas waste, liquid waste, solid waste and so on. Each item represents an aspect in gold production while their combination reflects the relationship between gold production and environment. In this paper an utility function of evolution index on environmental load is given by linear or non-linear transformation, which changes evaluation indexes with different dimension into an equivalent value in range of [-1, 1]. This paper also provides a new approach to make decision on the weight for quantitative assessment with the help of a three-layered artificial neural network. The proposed approach in this paper has been successfully used to a real synthetic assessment for the environmental load in gold production, which include seven kinds of different operational technologies in China. The applications prove that the new approach is successful and reliable. It provides a new tool for the assessment of environmental load of the gold production.

In the Renison Bell area of western Tas mania, a series of Lower Cambrian quartzites, shales, carbonate beds ("dolomites"), cong- lomerates, tuffs and argillites have been folded into a broad monocline whose general strike is NW-SE, plunging slightly north and dipping NE. The downwarped eastern side of the monocline is disrupted by a steep (50-800) east dipping normal fault, known as the Bassett Structure, whose throw is in excess of 500 m. A series of flat north dipping normal faults, each with a throw of approximately 50 m, further disrupts the sequence. All major faulting was pre-mineralization. A cassiterite- bearing Devonian quartz porphyry body intrudes this Cambrian sequence 2 km south of the currently operating mine. Of economic importance is the presence of three carbonate beds in the sequence. These carbonates consist of a mixture of calcite, dolomite and siderite. The No. 1 (youngest) and No. 2 carbonate beds are each approximately 15 m thick and are separated by 20 m of hematitic conglomerates and tuffs. The No. 3 (oldest) carbonate bed is approximately 5 m thick and is separated from the No. 2 horizon by 50 m of dark grey, finely laminated shales and quart- zites. INTRODUCTION The use of activated charcoal to recover gold from alkaline cyanide leach liquors is the most rapidly expanding technology in hydrometallurgy today. The process, known as carbon-in-pulp (CIP), has replaced countercurrent decantation as the method for recovering gold by cyanidation. Carbon-in-pulp entails mixing activated charcoal with a ground ore-water slurry containing gold cyanide, allowing the charcoal to adsorb the gold, and then mechanically removing the gold loaded charcoal from the pulp. The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources has, since 1974, administered the Derelict Mines Rehabilitation Program (DMRP) to reduce the environmental impacts of abandoned and orphan mine sites. The application of the DMRP is presented in case studies of sites from the South Maitland Coalfield featuring residual drainage of acidic and saline water in a semi urban and rural community setting. The acidity here is typically derived from iron oxidation in shallow underground coal mine workings and in surface emplacements of coal washery reject materials. This paper presents summary information on AMD investigation, monitoring and rehabilitation. The experiences of community expectation, stakeholder consultation and peer review are discussed.

Ernest Henry Mining Pty Ltd started production in August 1997. The Ernest Henry orebody consists of two distinct parts, a complex supergene ore zone overlying a primary ore zone. The economic copper minerals in the supergene ore were chalcocite, bornite, secondary chalcopyrite and native copper while the primary zone has only chalcopyrite. The variability of the supergene zone made concentrator operation difficult and predicting metallurgical performance using mineralogy essential to establish the capabilities of the concentrator. A paper presented at the 1998 Mine to Mill Conference entitled Mineralogy Controlling Metallurgy at Ernest Henry Mining (Barnes, Strohmayr, Brindley and Munro, 1998) presented the testwork and initial plant surveys that showed that the mineralogy of the ore controls the metallurgy of the concentrator. This paper presents the data obtained from the subsequent years of operation treating both the supergene and primary ore types. A review of the actual supergene mineral distribution in feed and subsequent recoveries compared to those predicted as part of the flowsheet design is also presented.

Gold and silver mineralisation at the Chatree low sulfidation deposit is hosted in andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks and characterised by multiple hydrothermal alteration assemblages and quartz-carbonate (chlorite-adularia) replacements, veins and breccias. The ore-bearing veins are influenced by intersecting structures and host rock lithologies. Emplacement of the host succession occurred at 250 ¦ 6 Ma (dated with laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb zircon techniques), which was closely followed by mineralisation at 250.9 ¦ 0.8 Ma based on the analysis of adularia from coarse-grained quartz-sulfide (chalcopyrite-pyrite- sphalerite) veins using laser ablation Ar-Ar methods. Because of the work of the pioneers of sampling theory, we know the principles, test work and equations to use to design sampling systems to meet targets for precision and accuracy. However, we do not see such æproperÆ systems deployed everywhere a sample is obtained around mineral processing plants. In many cases, we do not have solutions that satisfy all of the theoretical, economic and practical considerations. There are some well-known problems, such as high-volume streams with wide size distributions combined with a sparse valuable component that is heterogeneously distributed (such as gold ore SAG mill feeds). However, other difficult sampling issues are common, such as streams which vary widely over a day in flow rate and slurry density (many flotation concentrates), and loaded CIP carbon on transfer to elution. Inventory measurement issues abound, especially for leaching operations where daily inventory change is significant for metallurgical accounting. The result is that operators realise that although they issue reports daily, they do not know what is actually going on in their plant on a daily basis with sufficient confidence to quickly diagnose problems or confidently predict the benefits of potential enhancements. The industry needs practical and economic solutions that can be awarded the ætheoretically correct samplerÆ tick in order to better understand and optimise their processes.

In an industry that is data-hungry and increasingly international in its outlook, the role of the New Zealand Government in facilitating exploration and mining activity here presents unique challenges. All things being equal, the Regime itself should result in æefficient outcomesÆ, however central to this rational economic tenet are the assumptions that the regime is in keeping with the times, other legislation works in tandem with it, and that those who administer the regime have the knowledge and experience to apply the rules wisely. Following the Crown Minerals review in late 2003, a shift in emphasis from Crown Minerals æmanaging the ActÆ towards proactively æmanaging the mineral estateÆ for greater benefit for all New Zealanders means that these assumptions are being increasingly challenged and addressed through a variety of initiatives. These include improved access to relevant data sets, minimisation of red tape and compliance costs, increasing emphasis on permit holder compliance with work programme obligations, changes to the Minerals Programme and regulations, closer collaboration with and representation to other government departments and councils, and additional recruitment of industry-experienced staff. This presentation will highlight aspects of these initiatives, and examine how they will collectively contribute to facilitating future exploration and mining activity in New Zealand.

The production of high-grade calcined bauxite is very dependent on the moisture content of the final product. Existing procedures rely on the ignition of small samples to monitor the effectiveness of the calcination process. The results obtained by this gravimetric technique are several hours behind production and do not permit regular adjustment of the furnace to optimize the control of the chemically bound water content (LOI).To provide rapid and hence more relevant results, a neutron moderation technique has been developed for measuring the LOI of bulk samples of calcined bauxite while they are still hot. The method uses fast neutrons from an 241 Am-Be neutron source to irradiate the samples, and the backscattered thermal neutrons detected are a measure of bound moisture content.The rms deviation between neutron and conventional determinations of LOI, in 15 calcined bauxite samples, was 0.08 per cent LOI over the range 0.1 to 0.9 per cent LOI. When allowance is made for the rms error in the ignition method, the error in the neutron method is found to be 0.07 per cent LOI.

Smaller deposits of high grade chalcopyrite or the concentrates of low grade and complex copper bearing ores, can be subjected to extraction processes other than smelting and converting. Low temperature chlorination and segregation processes are among those mentioned in the literature. In the present work, extraction of copper from a Brazilian chalcopyrite concentrate by slurry chlorination with chlorine gas at room temperature, dry chlorination by chlorine gas in the temperature range of 350 to 450¦C and segregation roasting of the calcined concentrate in the temperature range of 650 to 800¦C have been carried out. The effect of several experimental variables on the extraction of copper has been discussed in all these cases. Under optimum experimental conditions, 100 per cent Cu extraction was possible by either slurry or dry chlorination processes and around 86 per cent Cu by segregation roasting. For all the three cases, possible methods have been suggested to trial the studies on a pilot scale to assess their technoeconomic viability.

Power supply for remote mining developments is compared with supply to the general public with the conclusion that the private power plant operator has many opportunities to minimise his costs which are not open to public utilities. The main features of diesel, gas turbine and steam power plant and the limitation upon their application which may be imposed by the fuels available and the local conditions at remote sites are outlined. Reference is made to the value of joint examination by the mining engineer, metallurgist and power engineer to decide how to make best overall use of capital, labour and energy in co-ordinating the design of power and process plant and in setting no more than adequate standards of reliability and efficiency. Fluctuations in world markets make it difficult to plan mining operations to a firm time base. Suggestions are made to minimise the financial risk in forward expenditure upon power plant which in large sizes due to longer construction time may have to be ordered before a final decision is taken upon the mining development it is to serve.

The paper describes the application of New Zealand's environmental impact assessment procedures to a proposed gold and silver mine in the North Island of New Zealand. The project is described and a summary is provided of the statutory permits or consents that are required prior to operation of the project. Emphasis is given to the requirement for environmental impact assessment and the preparation of a formal environmental impact report. The company's approach to impact assessment is described, with examples of how this assessment and the identification of management alternatives influenced the engineering design of the project. This paper was prepared as a contribution to a working session of the International Association of Impact Assessment VII Annual Conference, July 1988.

The use of options theory in business has become well established in recent years and is currently one of the most exciting areas of current finance research. The theory can be used to value levered firms, and streams of contingent payments. This technique also has very practical applications in the areas of capital investment analysis and the valuation of equities in the natural resource industry. The use of options theory has been well accepted and used for many years in the trading of commodity options and futures contracts, in banking and insurance and in other industries. It also can be used to value such diverse contingent claims problems as the income tax liabilities of the firm and share underwriting agreements.Its application to the more complex options, such as those present in the resource industry, is only now becoming known. This lag is, at least partially, due to the difficult mathematics involved in solving complex options problems. Another factor is the almost overwhelming abundance of uncertainties, such as grade, tons and other natural risks, which must be considered in the evaluation mining projects.

Alliance Gold Mines was established in the early part of 1994 to acquire the assets of Diamin Resources NL at Maldon, Victoria. These comprised Exploration Licence 3422, some 20 sq km in area and enclosing the main part of the Goldfield, and a CIP plant - with a nominal capacity of 250 000 tpa - which was commissioned in 1988. Between 1988 and 1992 Diamin had mined - by open pit methods - and milled around one million tonnes of low grade gold ore, and recovered 55 000 ounces of gold. By 1992 the known shallow resources had been depleted. Historical gold production from the Maldon field is about 1.75 million ounces, at the surprising average recovered grade of 28 g/t. The last significant mine closed in 1926: since then there has been no comprehensive exploration program, though Lone Star Exploration NL tested part of the field for shallow open-pittable resources in the 1970s and Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd carried out widely-spaced drilling on the three main reefs from 1979 to 1982. Diamin (1983 - 1994) commenced a careful compilation of old mine records and newspaper clippings, and drilled several cored holes.

It is now recognised that rotary sample division is by far the best laboratory tool for extracting subsamples from a lot of material. In terms of sampling theory, rotary division, by virtue of the fact that it can extract many increments from the lot during the division process, radically reduces the variance due to distributional heterogeneity in the sample being divided. There are a number of occasions in sample preparation when it is necessary to extract a subsample of a target mass. To do this with rotary dividers taking a fixed fraction of the starting mass is a tedious task. In response to this problem, a variable split sample divider has been designed and built for the mineral industry. This paper discusses the utility of the device and presents test data showing that the machine is capable of making accurate mass split while overcoming segregation in the material being divided.

The activiltion of sphalerite with electrolytically generated copper ions from a copper electrode instead of the usual practice of the addition of copper sulphate was studied in the laboratory. A large surface area of copper was provided by lining three sides of a bench flotation cell with copper sheeting. The lining was connected to the positive terminal of a low voltage d.c. source, and the cell impeller to the negative terminal.Sphalerite was effectively activated by this arrangement and was subsequently floated using xanthate as the collector.Flotation results comparable to those obtained with 1 lb/ton CuS04.5H20 (0,255 lb/ton copper) were obtained using 0·1062 lb/ton of electrolytic copper and 0·488 kWh of electrical energy. The wastage of copper due to the formation of insoluble precipitates was found to be dependent on the length of time the current was passed. Maximum current was passed for the shortest time to minimize wastage.

Computer programs for the storage, retrieval and use of basic thermodynamic and physical property data for chemical substances are described. Methods are presented for the collection, critical assessment and pre- processing of source data for files containing enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity data for 3000 compounds, enthalpy and excess entropy for 200 dilute solutions and critical propert- ies and vapour pressure for 600 compounds. Retrieval programs are discussed which allow the tabulation or plotting of many basic and derived thermodynamic properties for chemical substances or balanced reactions. Examples are given of the use of such data to infer the stability or corrosion resistance of materials and the feasibility, yield and heat release of reactions. A general purpose calculation program is discussed which allows the equilibrium compos- ition to be found for complex systems with many species and phases, using the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Methods of correction for non-ideal behaviour in these systems are discussed, as well as methods for fixing, maximizing or minimizing any desired property of the system. Examples are given of the simulation of various laboratory Experiments and industrial processes by this method.
