A LITILE north of the geographic centre of the Province of Saskatchewan, 150 miles north of the city of Prince Albert, is a narrow green-stone and sedimentary belt of pronounced structural characteristics. This belt, generally known as the Sulphide Lake belt, is about two and a half miles wide. During the past three years prospecting has uncovered numerous gold-bearing showings occurring chiefly along the centre of the belt for a distance of at least nine miles. The number of these showings, the nature of some of them, and their relationship to strong structural features, make it altogether likely that intensive work will eventually locate ore-bodies that will be of economic importance. The discovery of gold in the fall of 1938 on the south shore of Mackay lake, about five miles northwest of the Sulphide Lake gold-bearing belt, indicates that there are neighbouring zones of interest. This paper, an attempt to outline the present status of the interesting mineralized belt, is based largely on the information gained on a five-day tour of this district, made in August, 1939, on behalf of the Department of Natural Resources of the Province of Saskatchewan. The Sulphide Lake belt is named after a small lake centrally located in it. This lake and others are just north and within short portage distances of some of the long bays along the north shore of Lac La-Ronge, an irregular, island-studded lake, about twenty miles in diameter, in relatively rocky Precambrian country, just north of the Palaeozoic contact. The fur-trading post and settlement of Lac La-Ronge is on the west shore of this lake and a road, now under construction, will shortly link this community with the city of Prince Albert. In the past, the most direct route was an indifferent canoe route, in part following Montreal lake and river; more recently, the aeroplane has made this section easily accessible.

Infrared spectroscopic data collected using HyloggerTM technology is being used to assess the mineral composition of Archean iron ore bedrock and Cenozoic detrital units in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Analysis of infrared spectra enables quantification of: (1) composite iron mineralogy, (2) composite clay mineralogy, (3) hydrous silicates and (4) carbonate mineral abundances. Stratigraphic and rock mass unit logging of core has identified several detrital and bedrock units recognisable across the Pilbara. However, due to alteration related to mineralisation, weathering and later stage precipitate overprinting, it can often be difficult to assess the detrital-bedrock boundary and the occurrences of specific geotechnical units in the detritals and bedrock, particularly when using non-core drilling techniques and traditional geochemical assays. Infrared spectroscopic data collected concurrently on core from several sites has shown distinct correlation against existing unit subdivisions and associated geochemical parameters. Where infrared spectroscopic data have also been collected on rock chips recovered from reverse circulation infill drilling, these correlations allow robust geological and geotechnical models to be developed based on the typical mineralogical-geochemical signatures. The geotechnical sub-units identified in core can be readily distinguished using the various iron and clay minerals captured by the HyloggerTM technology as opposed to total iron, potassium, and alumina captured by geochemical assays. Further, some of the minerals targeted by infrared spectroscopic analysis (eg gibbsite, white mica, vitreous goethite) and their ubiquitous presence as the products of weathering, assist in recognition of various ancient weathering surfaces and help to define the origin of the material, whether bedrock or detrital. Overall, HyLogging of core and chips allows important mineralogy focussed data to be captured at minimal additional financial outlay. Correlations against geochemical unit identifiers are robust both within deposits and between deposits. Significant improvements in the confidence of geological and geotechnical models are attained.

Aluminum boron carbide particulate reinforced composites have found new applications in nuclear industry due to their special capability to capture neutrons, Recently, Alcan successfully developed a liquid metal mixing process to fabricate Al¬B4C metal matrix composite instead of powder metallurgical technology. In the process, titanium is added into the composites to control interactions between boron carbide particulates and aluminum matrix, To understand the effects of titanium on the composites, the solidification microstructure of Al-16%B4C without or with titanium was examined by optical and electron microscopes. The results show that titanium can improve the uniformity of the particulate distribution within aluminum matrix if the titanium content in the composites is more than 0,5%, Furthermore, it is found that the layer with rich titanium on the surface of the particulates can limit the formation of AlB2 type compounds, which may greatly deteriorate the fluidity of the composites, In addition, it is also found that the amount of the reaction products in the composites increases with the increase of holding time. However, the rate of the increase is mitigated by the increase of the content of titanium in the composites. Besides, a procedure was proposed and implemented for the evaluation of uniformity of particulate distribution within aluminum matrix.

Conventional hypereutectic Al-Si alloys such as A390 are used principally for the casting of components used in wear applications requiring abrasive resistance such as in engine or compressor blocks. A comprehensive study was undertaken to investigate the potential of improving the mechanical properties of these alloys by the addition of magnesium. A thorough thermodynamic study of the effect of the addition of Mg to the conventional A390 alloy showed that Mg2Si starts to form as a primary phase at 4.2% Mg as well as in the products of the binary and ternary eutectic reactions forming the matrix. Experiments were carried out in producing castings with different cooling and solidification rates of alloys with up to 10% Mg. Mg additions were found to increase the hardness over the as cast alloy due to solid solution strengthening. Also, T6 heat treatment greatly improved the tensile properties of these alloy compositions due to the strengthening effect of the theta-Al2Cu phase. The elongation of these alloys generally decreases marginally with Mg content. The most significant property improvement of the alloys with higher Mg content is the substantial increase in wear resistance. This is attributed to the dispersion of smaller particles of Mg2Si and their coherence with the matrix as compared to the large Si particles in the conventional alloy. A new rheoforming process for A390 is presented that improves the processing of the semi-solid slurry. Structure modification elements were also added to refine the primary and eutectic silicon greatly improving the processing of the semi-solid slurry.

Investment in coal resource development is affected by a variety of uncertain factors. Investors can make a flexible, strategic decision to achieve the value of risk implicated in those uncertain factors. Therefore, based on real-option theory, we identified key uncertain factors that affect a coal resource investment project, and revealed the formation mechanism of option value in coal resource developing investment project. Then, a multi-factor decision making model was established for a coal resource development investment project with random changes of coal price, interest rate, convenience yield and production cost. Finally, we tested the model and analyzed relevant parameters by applying living data. Our results indicate this model reflects the value of risk implicated in uncertain factors for coal resource development investment, and is able to determine a critical point of decision making change when coal price and production cost varym respectively. By means of parameters analysis, the convenience yield has a positive effect on the project value. The interest rate has a negative effect.

"At an average of 90.3% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), Zincor’s zinc recovery was well below the industry standard of 96%. The losses through the residues, in particular the iron residue, were the biggest contributors to the overall zinc loss. It was believed that this loss could be decreased with the implementation of seed recycling. A plant trial was run to test the implementation of a seed recycle. The rate of seed addition through recycle was increased over a 4-week period. The presence of seed decreased the insoluble zinc loss by providing additional surface area for iron to precipitate onto, and reducing coating of unleached neutralising agent. The soluble zinc loss was also decreased at low and moderate seed recycle volumes. The improvement was attributed to agglomeration growth of the recycled particles, which improves the dewatering characteristics of the precipitate. In contrast, the soluble zinc loss increased at high seed recycle rates. This result was attributed to particle crowding and a low wash ratio.INTRODUCTION The Zincor refinery, which closed in December 2011, was situated just outside of Springs in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and employed the conventional Roast-Leach-Electrowin process, which accounts for 75 to 80% of the annual primary zinc production in the world. The refinery fed up to 220 000 t/a of zinc sulphide concentrate. The major portion of the raw material was sourced in Southern Africa from the Rosh Pinah and Black Mountain mines. Between 20 000 and 40 000 t/a of material was imported to make up the deficit and to improve the grade of the feed material. The iron contained in the zinc concentrates, at an average of 6.03% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), resulted in the formation of zinc ferrite during roasting, which is insoluble under atmospheric leach conditions. At Zincor, most of the zinc ferrite was dissolved in the residue treatment plant at elevated temperature and high acid strength. The leach liquor from this aggressive leach contained between 15 to 30 g/L of iron, mostly in the ferric form, and was known as the hot iron solution (HIS). The presence of iron in the liquor had an adverse effect on the zinc operation, particularly on the current efficiency in the electrowinning circuit. Therefore the iron needed complete removal."

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a holistic environmental assessment tool that allows the compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs, and potential environmental impacts of a product or service throughout its life cycle, from cradle to grave (i.e., from resource extraction and transformation to final disposal, including production and use stages). The relevance of LCA for the mining industry is twofold. First, the mining industry has a role in providing the LCA community the data that allows subsequent evaluations of the life cycle environmental impacts of primary materials such as metals, as well as the environmental comparison of the downstream products of the mining industry with other competing materials for specific uses. Second, the mining industry can use LCA in order to evaluate the environmental impacts of its activities, identify their environmental hotspots and compare the impacts of available technical options. For example, the environmental impacts of different extractive and processing technology can be compared through the use of LCA. This latter use of LCA by the mining industry is less common. This paper discusses the use of LCA to compare sulphidic tailings management options. The paper also presents some of the LCA research challenges that still have to be addressed to increase the relevance of LCA results for the specific context of mining activities.

"A description of the equipment used and the electrical-mechanical problems encountered in sinking a deep shaft is given. This shaft is currently being sunk to a depth of 7,115 feet. Some of the features of the sinking plant are a 6,500-hp double-drum hoist, a Blair stage hoist, special high-capacity mucking gear, a Galloway stage, high-tensile stage suspension ropes and 12-ton sinking buckets.INTRODUCTIONIN THE EARLY FALL OF 1965, a contract was let, by The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, to Shaft Sinkers (Canada) Limited -J. S. Redpath Limited -Joint Venture, • to sink and equip the Creighton No. 9 shaft at their Creighton Mine proper-ty in Ontario. This paper describes the electrical and mechanical equipment used by the contractor on this project, and details various problems that were en-countered.The shaft itself is circular in section and is lined with monolithic concrete. Upon completion, it will feature twin skip compartments, a cage compartment, counterweight compartment, manway and pipe compartment. The finished diameter of this opening will be 21 feet and the shaft will bottom 7,115 feet below the collar. The present depth of the shaft (April, 1968) is 5,400 feet. The opening is concrete lined as excavation takes place and the steel will be placed in the shaft upon completion of sinking. Hoisting is done on rope guides which are part of the stage suspension system."

Cu–Ti alloy wires doped with and without a small amount of Ni were fabricated by over-aging and using intense drawing procedures. For both the Cu–Ti alloys with and without Ni doping, the over- aged microstructure was occupied fully with a coarse lamella of Cu solid solution and β-Cu4Ti plates precipitated discontinuously by grain boundary reactions. The full-lamellar microstructure was developed much more rapidly by aging in multi steps at 873 K to 723 K rather than by isothermal aging at 723 K. Ni doping in Cu-Ti alloy was also effective to accelerate the formation of the lamellar microstructure. When drawing the over-aged alloy with inferior hardness but superior electrical conductivity, the strength increased steadily and eventually exceeded that for the wires drawn from the peak-aged alloy. In addition, the electrical conductivity of the wires drawn from the over-aged alloy was always much greater than that from the peak-aged alloy. Eventually, the procedure of over-aging, followed by intense drawing, could enhance both the strength and electrical conductivity of Cu-Ti alloys, whichever they contain a small amount of Ni or not, rather than the conventional peak-aging and drawing process. INTRODUCTION Cu-based alloy wires, which have an excellent combination of strength and electrical conductivity, have attracted extensive attention for highly mechanically stressed electrical devices, such as conductive lead wires and wires in suspension springs. Cu-Be alloys are widely used for such electrical components owing to their combination of strength and electrical conductivity among industrial Cu-based alloys. However, since beryllium is potentially toxic and also a rare element, substitute materials for Cu-Be alloys have been searched for several decades. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti based alloys have been proposed as candidates because their mechanical and physical properties are comparable to those of Cu-Be alloys; however, their electrical conductivity is inferior (Datta & Soffa, 1976; Soffa & Laughlin, 2004). In order to satisfy the requirement of downsizing and streamlining electrical devices, further improvement of the mechanical and electrical properties of Cu–Ti alloy wires is needed. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti alloys, which contain approximately 3 to 6 at.% Ti, are typically prepared using a solid solution treatment above 1100 K and then aging at a moderate temperature of 700 K to 800 K. It has been revealed that the microstructural events during aging progress as follows (Soffa & Laughlin, 2004): (1) compositional modulation of the parent supersaturated Cu solid solution in an initial aging stage (Laughlin & Cahn, 1975), (2) continuous nucleation and growth of fine needle-shaped precipitates of metastable β’-Cu4Ti with a tetragonal structure in a peak-aged stage, and (3) discontinuous precipitation of cellular components laminating the plates of a terminal Cu solid solution and stable β-Cu4Ti with an orthorhombic structure at the grain boundaries in an over-aging stage. It has been also accepted that the highest number density of dispersed fine β’-Cu4Ti needles should contribute to maximal strengthening. On the other hand, decease of the strength in the over-aging stage occurs due to the replacement of the fine β’- Cu4Ti needles with cellular components containing coarse β-Cu4Ti plates, while the electrical conductivity is significantly enhanced due to the depletion of solute Ti in the Cu matrix. This suggests that a combination of strength and electrical conductivity for age-hardenable Cu-Ti alloys is in a trade-off relationship, and that innovative improvement of both properties might be limited to tuning the aging conditions.

Moving to Australia in 1929, he was assistant smelter superintendent, Mount Isa Mines Ltd., Queensland, until 1934, when he returned to Canada, spend-ing one year as metallurgist with B.C.

"As part of a larger investigation on generation of fines from mining activities and their effect on downstream operations, ore samples from Onaping area stockpiles of Falconbridge Ltd were studied. Batch flotation tests were conducted on the stockpile samples and fresh ore samples to explore the effect of stockpiling on grade-recovery performance. Head grade and particle size distribution of the samples from stockpiles were adjusted so that the samples compared are similar to each other. In additional tests, fresh ore samples were blended with stockpile samples at various percentages, representing 27.4, 50.2 and 81.5% of stockpile samples.The samples from stockpiles produced inferior nickel grade-recovery curves compared to fresh ore. The poorer grade-recovery performance was attributable to two factors. First, a significant dilution effect was observed due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. Secondly, while pyrrhotite from stockpiled ore became highly floatable, the same stockpiling conditions caused nickel losses that were attributable to non-floatability of some pentlandite.In the case of blending, there was generally insignificant difference in the nickel grade-recovery between fresh and blended samples when the blending cases involved 27.4 and 50.2% stockpile samples. However, an increase in pyrrhotite recovery was observed for both blending cases. At 81.5% blending case, degraded grade-recovery was significant primarily due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. There was a small, but noticeable amount of nickel loss for this case. However, for lower ratios of blending this loss was negligible.The increase in pyrrhotite recovery was partly attributed to its activation by Cu and Ni ions. Formation of a significant amount of elemental sulphur was also apparent from analysis of stockpiled samples. It can be concluded that pyrrhotite is mildly oxidized under stockpiling conditions while part of the pentlandite undergoes a more severe oxidation."

"Modeling of big faults or weak planes of strong and weak discontinuities is of major importance to assess the Geomechanical behaviour of mining/civil tunnel, reservoirs etc. For modelling fractures in Geomechanics, prior art has been limited to Interface Elements which suffer from numerical instability and where faults are required to be aligned with element edges. In this paper, we consider comparative study on finite elements for capturing strong discontinuities by means of elemental (EFEM) and nodal enrichments (XFEM) for Geomechanical applications. For general fracture scenarios, Oliver et al. (2008) have demonstrated advantages of EFEM over XFEM for including: (a) ease of modeling in any standard finite element code due to the possibility of static condensation, (b) higher accuracy in some cases for coarse meshes, and, (c) a reduced computational cost. However, there has been no work that considers cohesive fractures in Geomechanics. We present a numerical analysis based on a linear constitutive model and linear triangular elements for the bulk and a linear constitutive behaviour for the fault for a representative set of fault planes in a circular tunnel made in rock mass. In the numerical examples we consider both well-traced and bad-traced meshes. We focus on traction profile analysis for both EFEM and XFEM, since that is crucial to understand the cohesive fracture behaviour specially rock joint. Therefore in each case, shear, normal and stress ratio are compared across the two methods along the fault plane. This is the first such work that compares XFEM and EFEM behaviour for Geomechanics problems.For the considered class of problems and the sharp penalization approach without regularizations adopted, it can be observed that accuracy and robustness of EFEM may strongly depend on the fault orientation with respect to the element edges, while, XFEM is independent of fault alignment with element edges. It has been also observed that, with mesh refinement model, stress oscillation completely removed with XFEM however EFEM fails to provide oscillation free results with finer mesh in case bad-traced model. We also performed error analysis and found that in case of bad-traced mesh the average error in the XFEM is 84% smaller than of EFEM and for XFEM the error goes to zero with increasing mesh resolution, while for EFEM the error increases with mesh resolution. Thus, we experimentally demonstrate that, XFEM performs better than EFEM in terms of accuracy and rate of convergence with marginal increase in computational cost. This work hence provides novel insights on the application of XFEM and EFEM in Geomechanics."

"Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. Froth flotation is used to produce nickel and copper concentrates. As is the case at other operations, the presence of magnesium is detrimental to the flotation products. In the past year, the exploitation of a new deposit has increased magnesium in the feed. Thus, it has been challenging to meet the required ratio in the final nickel concentrate. In search for a consistent solution for this problematic, an empirical flotation simulator making use of selectivity curves was developed. The circuit was expressed as a system of linear equations, which considered the distribution of copper, nickel and gangue minerals in the different streams. The relative quantities of each mineral are given by the separation efficiency curves of the various banks in the circuit. Three sources of data were used to calibrate the simulator: historical plant data (metallurgical balance), infinite dilution bench-scale flotation tests, and direct sampling of flotation cells. The calibrated separation curves were used to predict the recovery of the different species based on a single mineral recovery. Validation of the simulator showed good fit for the valuable minerals. The simulator was then used to infer the optimal operating conditions of the flotation circuit to optimise magnesium oxide content of the nickel concentrate. Simulation of two re-arrangements of the circuit gave a promising solution with a Fe:MgO ratio 2.42 times higher than the minimum value.INTRODUCTION Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and re?ects in?ltrative ?uid ?ow, wall rock reaction, temperature variations, and ?uid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonationusually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knifesharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although,visually striking and scienti?cally interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations areless useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonationpattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarnor other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wall rocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gos-san in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to gar-net, to pyroxene, to massive-sul?de replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal loca-tions. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet: pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation pat-terns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is com-monly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, re?ecting particularly reducing wall rocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcicgarnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisens stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite.Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wall rocks. Gold-rich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa-Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with signi?cant zones of massive sul?des within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wall rocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and meta-somatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. Differences in oxidation state correlate well with different skarn zonation patterns, particularly garnet: pyroxene ratios and compositions, and can be used in both classi?cation of and exploration for skarn deposits

The Chagres Smelter is located 80 kilometres north of Santiago - Chile, in the middle of an agricultural valley which is also one of the poorest districts in the country. This condition sets the main focus for the smelter&apos;s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes, which ultimately aim at building self sustainable social and economic capital in accordance with the local capacities. With the help of Anglo American&apos;s SEAT (Socio Economic Assessment Toolbox), a corporately developed instrument designed to help the operations understand the needs of the communities and the impacts of those operations, the Chagres Smelter implemented several programmes, such as the CETTA (Experimental and Applied Technology Transfer Centre) programme. This project started in 2003, and consists of creating a centre for the transfer of sustainable techniques and skills for the small agricultural and livestock producers that live in the rural areas near the Chagres Smelter. Its main impacts are: Improved production quality (goat cheese and bee honey) and access to relevant markets, improved training and self-sustainability levels of producers, enhanced socio-economic level of the District&apos;s inhabitants by improving their income earning opportunities and technical knowledge, creation and promotion of a local brand as a symbol of quality products from the valley and a positive environmental impact of good breeding and native flora protection practices in the area. Other relevant social programmes are the &apos;Environmental Strivers&apos;, which created a recycling centre in the community; and the &apos;Beautiful Valley" project, which provides management knowledge and skills to local youngsters and leaders who can contribute to finding solutions for local environmental needs.

THE chief object in presenting this paper on bentonite is to attract general attention to one of the least known and most neglected industrial minerals of Canada, a mineral of extensive commercial possibilities, as evidenced by its development and exploitation in other countries, principally in the United States and Germany; countries upon which some of our most important Canadian industries are dependent for their supply of special clays, such as Fuller&apos;s earth and activated bentonite. It was in view of these conditions and the knowledge of the presence of large quantities of bentonite in the Canadian West that the work here reported on was under-taken. While the investigational studies have not been completed, the results indicate that among the many samples tested there are some of real merit and industrial importance. While it has been the author&apos;s privilege to examine deposits and samples of bentonite from all of the Western provinces, his chief activities in the field and in research studies have naturally been confined largely to Saskatchewan materials. Notwithstanding this, however, this paper is presented in the hope that it may stimulate a more general interest in, and study of, Canadian bentonites as a whole, a matter of such importance that provincial boundary lines should be overlooked. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BENTONITE According to Schurecht and Donda (1), bentonite is commonly composed of the mineral montmorillonite, (Mg,Ca)O.Al203 5SiO2 .nH2O, though some are known to consist of beidellite, Al2O3 3SiO2.nH2O: where n is approximately 4, and in certain cases the Al2O3 may in part be replaced by Fe2O3. For present purposes, however, it may be sufficient to state that, in general, bentonite is a "soapy&apos; clay-like mineral or group of minerals composed largely of hydrous aluminium silicate, but frequently carrying small percentages of the alkalies, alkaline earths, and free silica, as well as silicates, gypsum, and other admixed detritus such that purification is usually necessary.

"The Westerose Leduc (D-3) pool, a Devonian reef reservoir situated in Central Alberta, Canada, has now been producing for over seven years. As a unit operation, the pool pro-vides an interesting example of the full exploitation of gravity segregation tendencies. The reef has a 238-foot oil column, underlain •by bottom water and over-lain by a substantial gas cap. The original hydrocarbons in place were 147.96 million STB oil and 94.4 MMMCF of Taw gas cap gas. Nine-teen producing wells on 80-acre spacing have been completed, most of which are highly productive. Gas injection operations return solution gas to the gas cap. A study of the rock and fluid properties of the pool show it to be conducive to production by gravity segregation at high rates. Monthly average producing rates have varied between 800 B/D and 8,000 B/D and have recently totalled 3,000 BID to 5,000 B /D. Recovery and performance predictions under partial pres-sure maintenance at 10,000 BID indicate an ultimate recovery of 66 per cent of the original oil in place. In the absence of pressure maintenance, recovery would be only slightly less."

If the metals sector is to contribute successfully to sustainable consumption we must adopt principles and practices which address the entire life cycle of the materials we produce. Progress must be founded on a sense of shared responsibility for the resources we utilize and the materials we create - it is this integrated approach which lies at the heart of materials stewardship. Materials stewardship means mining and metals companies producing materials in a responsible manner and then working with others, beyond their site, to ensure that the downstream material flows and applications are managed properly to create maximum societal value. In September 2006 ICMM published &apos;Maximizing Value: Guidance on implementing materials stewardship in the minerals and metals value chain&apos;. This document takes a practical view presenting structured guidance as well as good practice case studies. In the publication, materials stewardship is described in terms of the range of activities that can be undertaken to ensure that all parties work collectively toward the responsible use of metal and mineral resources. This paper introduces the materials stewardship concept as set out in `Maximizing Value&apos; and describes the business case for implementation as well as the ICMM framework for promoting materials stewardship.
