"Phosphorus slag is the most heavy-tonnage waste of yellow phosphorus production, which is stored in the dump fields for many years creating ecological problems in the regions. Despite of the actions taken to utilize the slags, most of them remain in the slag disposal area. One of the relevant and priority directions is rare-earth metals production (REMs), presence of which in the phosphorus slags allows considering the latter as an acceptable raw material source. Phosphorus slags contain about 30–40 wt% of silicon dioxide, therefore they can serve as a source of production of precipitated silicon dioxide highly required in different industries.The purpose of this work is the most complete REMs recovery in the solution while leaching and subsequent processing of siliceous cake. The work shows results of researches on establishment of the chemical and phase compositions of phosphorus slags, determination of the forms of presence therein of REMs compounds, processes of phosphorus slag leaching by nitric acid and processing of produced siliceous cake by NaOH solution.Based on the data of the instrumental and chemical methods of phosphorus slag analysis, it was established that it consists of pseudowollastonite a-CaSiO3 for 90–92%. It was found out that REMs are present in it in the form of carbonate apatite Ca10(PO4)6CO3 or rare earth apatite, and La2S3 compound inclusions.Optimum parameters of phosphorus slag leaching process were selected: HNO3 concentration 7- 7.5 mol/L; L/S ratio = 2.6–3 mL/g; temperature – 50–80o?; duration – 1 h; pulp stirring – 500 rpm. Recovery of SREMs, CaO, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 into the solution were achieved at 98.0, 99.1, 99.0 and 18.8%, respectively. Presence of 10 elements of the rare earths group in the phosphorus slag was established. It was found out that recovery of almost all REMs is within ~92–99%, except for Sc and Lu – ~39% and ~28%, respectively.For the purpose of optimization of siliceous cake leaching by NaOH solution, influence of some physical and chemical parameters was studied: N?O? concentration, L/S ratio, temperature, and duration. Results of the experimental data will serve as a basis for development of the technology of complex processing of the technological waste of phosphorus industry with production of REMs concentrate and precipitated silicon dioxide."

A drop tower and methodology were developed to study the impact of mineralogy on the flash combustion behaviour of copper concentrates. Reaction shaft conditions of a flash furnace were simulated using a drop tower reactor and different molar ratios of oxygen gas to sulphur in the feed. Five feeds were tested in the drop tower including pure minerals chalcopyrite and pyrite as well as two mineralogically distinct copper concentrates and a blend of the two. The behaviour of each of these five feeds were evaluated through analysis of the solid combustion products for elemental sulphur, mineralogy and particle size. Desulphurization curves for each of the feeds were produced. It is thought that the desulphurization behaviour of pure minerals can be used to estimate the behaviour of a concentrate and that a blending recipe could be developed, which can optimize the chemical and mineralogical inputs to the flash furnace and guide operations on the optimum furnace conditions. Overall, the drop tower has proven to be a useful tool for studying flash combustion processes. Experimental results suggest that mineralogy has a significant impact on the conditions required for the production of matte with consistent grade. This finding is especially significant for custom smelters, which may see several different blends in a day. INTRODUCTION Flash furnace smelting is a continuous feed, batch tap, pyrometallurgical process that is used to produce copper matte from copper sulphide concentrates. Dried concentrate(s), silica flux, and secondary materials are blended to a target chemical composition, typically given by the Cu/S ratio, before processing. This fine, dried feed is dispersed throughout the heated furnace reaction shaft with an O2-enriched reaction gas. The particles heat up in the shaft of the furnace, ignite and undergo reactions that pre-oxidize the iron sulphide and some of the impurities in the feed. Oxidation reactions in the shaft of the furnace desulphurize the feed and produce an SO2-containing off gas. The reacted particles fall into the furnace settler and separate into a Cu-rich matte and an iron-silicate slag, while the SO2-containing off gas is carried out of the furnace for heat and dust recovery, as well as H2SO4 production. Some concerns during operation of the furnace are dusting, over or under oxidation of the feed, and a stable flame.

Electrospark Deposition (ESD) is a low heat-input, high energy density, micro-welding process. The short pulse duration and high-pulse frequency, in combination with the small amount of material transferred during each pulse, results in the evolution of extremely rapid cooling rates, believed to approach 105-106 °C/s [1]. This rapid solidification event results in the refinement of the microstructure to the nanostructured or amorphous level [2, 3]. Figure 1 displays the resultant microstructure of an Al-17%Si alloy deposited by the ESD process. Furthermore, it was determined that the microstructure of the deposit remained unchanged after subsequent layers were welded onto the presented layer. Freeforming of materials is a rapid prototyping process in which the deposited feedstock is built-up to the desired geometry in a near-net shape manner. Figure 2 displays the automated set-up employed produce three dimensional freeformed objects via multiple deposition trials of the ESD process. The automated XYZ table is equipped with CNC software to transform CAD renderings into three dimensional tool paths. Figure 3 displays an Al-12Si freeformed gear (2" diameter, 12 teeth) produced by the ESD process, prior to removal from the substrate. An SEM analysis of the freeformed component showed that the microstructure did not coarsen during the deposition of subsequent layers during the freeforming process, as depicted in Figure 4, resulting in the production of a bulk nanostructured component. This paper represents a summary of the capabilities of ESD to fabricate advanced materials possessing refined microstructure. In particular, results on the microstructural evolution obtainable for various wear-related systems will be presented. In addition, the feasibility of using the ESD process to freeform three-dimensional objects via multiple deposition passes will be presented and accompanied by a characterization of the properties of the freeformed component. THE realization by metallurgists of the important effect that traces of impurity may have upon the properties of a metal, and their steady demand for purer and still purer metals, have made the special cools for 'trace' analysis of increasing value. In the United States at least, spectrographic analysis is becoming the standard method for determining the impurities in zinc die-casting alloys. The Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, as a producer of virtually pure zinc, uses the spectrograph to control the purity of its products, and-as the electrolytic method is employed here-to control both the impurities in the electrolyte and those 'trace' elements, which, while they do not contaminate the zinc, have a great effect on the plating efficiency. The general plan of the laboratory is shown in Figure l; the housing for air purification, which is on the roof, is indicated by broken lines. One of the chief factors affecting the layout was the easy way in which a spectrographic assay can be spoiled by contamination. To minimize the quantity of dust tracked in, the laboratory was made separate from the general research laboratories, and an office was placed between the two. This arrangement has its drawback because of the traffic through the office, but it has effectively cut down dust. For similar reasons, the available space was subdivided into a number of small rooms, and the air currents in the laboratory were so arranged that dust would be carried where it would do least harm. Air is drawn in at the roof over a 50-kilowatt bank of Calrod heaters, through Annis air filters, by a No. 4 Sirocco fan. Most of it is forced into the spectrograph room, but some goes to the office and darkroom. The air flow is from the spectrograph room, through the plate-measuring room, into the chemical laboratory, where it is exhausted by a No. 1% Sirocco fan on the fume hood. Air can also re-circulate from the plate-measuring room back to the heater. The arrangement is such that the air in the laboratory is maintained at higher pressure than the outside air; consequently, no dirt enters through cracks about the windows and doors. A thermo-regulator holds the temperature constant within one or two degrees; only on the hottest days in summer does the temperature rise enough to affect the focus of the instrument.

Although most in situ operations in Alberta do not encounter significant problems during resource extraction, there have been a few documented occurrences of oil or steam releases as a result of compromised caprock seals. The objective of the Oil Sands Caprock Integrity Project (OSCRIP) is to characterize the units above and below bitumen zones to determine which geological factors affect the quality of the caprock seal. In addition, geomechanical properties and stress measurements of the bitumen reservoir and overlying units will be examined to provide a better picture of the containment conditions in which in situ operations occur. The information from this study will aid regulatory staff and industry in determining the zone-specific geological and geomechanical factors that could affect the design, operation, and feasibility of in situ recovery projects. The OSCRIP study area (Townships 87 to 99 and Ranges 1 to 13, West 4th Meridian) encompasses the surface mineable area, the northeast extent of the Wabiskaw-McMurray bitumen deposit and the Clearwater Formation, as well as a wide band of the Devonian salt-dissolution zone. Regional geological mapping of the Cretaceous strata focuses on the spatial extent and thickness of the caprock seal. Mapping of the underlying Devonian strata is targeted at better understanding the potential effects of salt dissolution and collapse of overlying strata on the integrity of the caprock seal. Examination of LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) bare earth DEM in the study area has revealed localized depressions that may represent sinkholes rooted in subsurface collapse features in Devonian carbonate and evaporite strata. Mapping the location and understanding the timing of salt dissolution-related features and deformation in the Devonian strata will help address questions about the possible effect that geological structures, such as sinkholes, have on the integrity of the caprock, as well as the potential for localized variations in the stress regime of the bitumen zone and overlying units. The stress regime in units above 350 m is such that any induced fractures are believed to be horizontal, and therefore, there would appear to be no mechanisms that would allow these fractures to reach the surface. However, recent incidents have shown that vertical pathways can occur, linking the subsurface to the surface. The final phase of the project will evaluate the changes that may occur in the stress regime under thermal operating conditions in the study area.

PUBLIC attention was first attracted to the Crow River area of north-western Ontario by the discovery of gold in 1928. The first three discoveries were eventually developed into Central Patricia, Pickle Crow, and Albany River mines. In 1929, preliminary developments were carried out at the Howell vein on N.A.M.E. (later Pickle Crow) claims, and in 1929 and 1930 surface and underground work indicated an ore-body at Central Patricia mine. However, due to the financial depression and the distance of these properties from the railway, it was not until 1934 and 1935 that, benefitted by the revaluation of gold, the real potentialities of these two properties began to be realized. Their immediate success led to a resumption of activity on neighbouring properties throughout the area in 1936 and 1937. Preliminary prospecting in the earlier period had been limited by the scarcity of rock exposures in the country. The procedure in the recent programme of intensive exploration has been along similar lines at most properties and has consisted lf detailed geological mapping accompanied by geophysical surveys and followed by systematic drilling of favourable zones. The present importance of the camp may be judged by the fact that, in 1937, Central Patricia and Pickle Crow mines together produced bullion valued at $3,662,953, and paid $1,450,000 in dividends. In addition, there were pro-mising gold developments at Albany River mine. During the past two seasons, the Geological Branch of the Ontario Department of Mines has been making a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits in the Crow River area. It is the purpose of this paper to present a brief statement of some of the structural features of these deposits; a summary of other geological information essential for the understanding of the main topic is included. A more detailed report on the area will be published shortly by the Ontario Department of Mines. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment here for all help received, for the writer is in-debted to the management, staff, and consultants of every Company in the camp for generous co-operation in the field and for information, plans, maps, and records placed at his disposal. Reports and articles on properties in the area have been written by Hurst (1), Cormie (2), Reid (3), and the staff of Pickle Crow Gold Mines ( 4).

The steadily growing demand for metals and their price increase at metal exchanges make the mining and utilization of marine mineral resources like polymetallic nodules, manganese crusts or sulfide deposits in the near future a viable option to potentially increase the supply of base and precious metals. For a country with low potential to mine land-based resources like Germany, the industrial recovery of metals from marine mineral resources could lead to a decreased dependency on imports. In this study, seafloor massive sulfides from the German license area in the Indian Ocean (Kairei field, Southern Central Indian Ridge) are treated to recover copper and precious metals. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the transferability of existing metallurgical techniques to the raw material of deep-sea massive sulfides. As a starting point to process this unconventional resource, samples from the Indian Ocean are chemically analyzed and mineralogical characterized. A comparison is carried out between the samples and land-based copper resources, to highlight the potential which lies in mining the deep-sea floor. This paper will show the general possibility of applying a two-stage pyrometallurgical process, based on a concentrate smelting operation, followed by a converting operation in lab-scale to the provided samples of massive sulfides. Generated slag from the concentrate smelting and the converting operation are investigated by X-ray diffraction to determine the mineralogical composition. The two-stage pyrometallurgical process is investigated by the thermochemical modelling tool FactSageTM 7.2 to evaluate the phase distribution of relevant elements between the metal, matte, slag and gas phase. The thermochemical boundaries of the pyrometallurgical process are therefore set and the results of the thermochemical study can be used as an indicator for the efficiency of an up-scaled process and the generated amount of side-streams, which need to be further treated or circulated back into the process. INTRODUCTION Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) are the third kind of discovered deep-sea minerals besides ferromanganese nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Sharma, 2017). They occur in water depths around 250–4,000 m (Koschinsky et al., 2018). SMS are characterized by a high base metal and sulfide content. They were created by fluid circulation and hydrothermal convection over time (Han et al., 2018). Commonly, areas rich in SMS are associated with hydrothermal vent fields on the seafloor (Keith et al., 2018).

Chondrite-normalized rare earth elements (REEs) profiles and high field strength elements (HFSEs) in rocks and minerals represent important tracers of geological processes. Of these the birdwing-shaped profile with negatively-sloped light REE ((La/Sm)N >1), positively-sloped heavy REE ((Tb/Yb)N <1), and strong negative Eu anomalies is commonly associated with large-scale hydrothermal systems or granitic intrusions. In a different way, severe deviation of Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios from those of chondrite may also indicate hydrothermal signatures in the rocks involved as these ratios are generally stable and chondritic in normal magmatism as a result of their nearly identical ionic radii and charge. In this study, we present a typical setting where birdwing-shaped REE profiles together with Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios unusually higher than those of chondrite, are systematically developed in a series of garnetite, quartzofeldspathic gneiss, Fe- or Mg-rich aluminous gneiss, and sulfides and magnetite. These units and associated Cu-Au mineralization form a VHMS-style hydrothermal system in the granulite-facies 1.4 Ga -1.35 Ga volcano-plutonic, arc-related Bondy gneiss complex (BGC), western Grenville Province, Canada. Outside the recognized hydrothermal system of the BGC, such REE profiles are not observed. Instead the surrounding felsic and mafic gneisses display primary trace element characteristics of island-arc magmas, suggesting that granulitefacies metamorphism did not modify significantly the trace element signatures of the protoliths. Although magmatic fractionation of accessory minerals can produce birdwing-shaped profiles, it cannot explain the extreme fractionation of isovalent trace elements (Nb-Ta) and the high Zr content of the hydrothermal rocks. Neither is it compatible with the lack of significant Nd depletion that would normally incur during this process. Following our study, we demonstrate that F-rich fluid and mineral phases enriched in LREEs and HREEs respectively must have been involved in the main hydrothermal alteration and REE fractionation process in the BGC. Preferential removal of REEs from the interstitial glass of the volcanic protoliths together with dissolution of plagioclase and subsequent external influx of HREEs and HFSEs can produce birdwing-shaped REE profiles. In turn, such profiles and/or unusual Nb/Ta, Hf/Sm ratios can be used as a sensitive marker of hydrothermally altered rocks in targeting mineral exploration.

"Abstract-Grass roots exploration has an emphasis on good precision at low (sub-economic) concentrations of an element, in order to identify "anomalies" which may lead to drilling targets. Although it is wise to have well-defined quality controls in place during early stage sampling, the control procedures at this stage tend to be rudimentary. When a deposit warrants detailed delineation, the need for accurate geological characterization and assaying of ore-grade rock must be supported by appropriate quality control procedures.As a project returns more promising results, and the likelihood of the project warranting a prefeasibility study increases, it is time to tighten quality assurance requirements and quality control protocols. Delays in instituting adequate quality control and verification procedures may lead to costly remedial actions that can also delay completion of the prefeasibility or feasibility study. Sometimes, as a project matures, the quality control and quality assurance aspects fail to keep pace with the changing nature of the work: an increasing emphasis on precise and accurate assaying of oregrade rock.A resource model is like a house of cards. The foundation of the house is the geological observations, the sampling methods and the geological interpretations performed upon those samples. Upon the sampling, which includes all the sub-sampling steps of sample preparation, rest the assay results. The quality of the assays can be no better than the quality of the sampling. Good assaying technique will preserve all biases and imprecisions introduced during sampling and sample preparation; it cannot remove them. If the sub-samples and/or assays are bad and must be redone, all the succeeding levels of the house of cards must also be rebuilt, or at least patched up.From geological observations, a geological interpretation is built, the quality of which is critical to the construction of an acceptable resource model. Geological elements are difficult to assess, and are not discussed here; they are dependent upon the expertise of the geologists involved. Geological knowledge contributes essential quality control elements to resource/reserve determinations (Sinclair and Postolski, 1999; Postolski and Sinclair, 1999).This paper consists of five sections: (1) overview of quality control protocols, (2) maintaining quality control of databases, (3) quality control of drill sampling, (4) optimizing crushing and grinding requirements, and (5) quality control of assay data acquisition."

MR. F. E. LATHE: In studying any subject whatever, one should at least occasionally stand back from the canvas, as it were, and take a broad view of the picture. It is such a view of the subject of industrial minerals that Dr. Wilson has given us today, and, in consideration of our efforts to utilize Canada&apos;s resources to the utmost in the present emergency, it seems most timely. I shall confine my remarks on the subject to the resources of the atmosphere and hydrosphere. We seldom stop to realize our dependence upon the atmosphere, not merely as a source of the oxygen we breathe but also of other indispensable elements. As recently as the beginning of the present century, grave concern was felt lest the rapidly increasing population of the world should ultimately starve for lack of the nitrogen required for crop growth. I recently noticed a reference to the Scientific American for March, 1890-just fifty years ago-in which an account is given of work on the fixation of nitrogen, which, said the article, "leads to the conclusion that while cyanides and ammonia may be thus produced experimentally, there are as yet insuperable difficulties in the way of adapting those methods to industrial purposes". Y et, in the early part of the present century, the development of the arc, cyanamide, and synthetic ammonia processes of nitrogen fixation was such as to remove, for all time to come the possibility of a shortage of nitrogen. Today, the atmosphere is by far our greatest source of nitrogen, and the capacity of the nitrogen fixation plants of the world is at least 4,000,000 tons annually-much more than can at present be utilized. Pure oxygen or oxygen-enriched air offers great possibilities in metallurgy and industrial chemistry, but, so far, little application has been made. In a paper presented to the Institute in 1926, 1 pointed out the theoretical savings which could be effected by the use of oxygen in burning carbon-when the gases pass off at 2,460°F., the fuel saving is no less than 50 percent. The use of oxygen on a commercial scale is intimately tied up with the question of refractories, but we should not forget that the possible changes in metallurgical practice by the use of oxygen are truly of revolutionary character.

"THE LETHBRIDGE COAL FIELD lies mainly .to the north and west of the city of Lethbridge. Mining carried on in this area for over eighty years until 1965. Before the building of a railway the coal was carried by bullock wagon to Montana for use in smelting, and for a while by river boat to Medicine Hat for railway use. The single, almost flat, worked seam is designated the ""Galt"" seam and is about 1.5 metres thick. It belongs to the Belly River formation and is under cover of 80 to 180 metres of weakly stratified sediments. A complex system of cross faults adds to the mining difficulties. Close timbering required in the entries and rooms reflected in a high timber cost and lower output per man shift. The coal is High Volatile"" C"" bituminous in rank with maximum gross calorific value of 11,200 Btu per pound and with a well defined cleavage. Roof conditions in the field range from very tender and very heavy on the south end of the field and west of the Oldman River to a more stable character to the north. Relatively speaking, the whole field would earn a rather tender rating and definitely so in relation to many U.S. fields. Floor conditions are characterized by a bentonitic type heaving in the south end of the field west of the Oldman river to a more stable situation in the north, which can tolerate shuttle car operation if kept drained. Water problems are minimal, except paralleling the Oldman River, where the seam dips below the river level. While vigilance is necessary to prevent accumulations of gas, the volume is rather limited. The seam was entered by shafts, except where small mines were located along the Oldman river banks and gained access by drifts. The coal seam was developed by driving either 3 or 4 Face entries 2 1/2 metres (8 ft) wide on 18-metre ( 60-ft) centres. Sets of dual butt entries driven at right angles to the Face entries completed development work. Normally rooms up to 8 metres wide were turned off the butt entries on up to 11 - metre centres. These were worked in groups of three to five, depending on the roof conditions, and normally advanced 60 m (200 ft). In some areas rooms had to be abandoned short of their objectives due to roof pressure, heaving floor and intermittent work."

"Three types of structures, the main shear zone, the north shear zone, and a series of hanging-wall fractures, contain all the orebodies so far discovered at the McKenzie Red Lake mine. Lenses and veins of quartz in these zones and fractures are the sources of the ore. The ore-bearing structures are unusual in that they are in a complex intrusive mass known as the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock. They are believed to have been produced by compressive stresses from the south andsouthwest.The mine is on the northeast side of McKenzie island, in Dome township in the central part of the Red Lake area. The original discovery, the main shear zone, was made in 1928, about 3 years after the property was staked, by M. L. Bouzan who was in charge of prospecting and development work on the property. Subsequent diamond drilling and underground exploration led to the installation of a mill, which came into production early in 1935. The hanging-wall fractures were found branching out from the main shear zone during development work on the 350-foot level. The north shear zone was discovered in 1940.From 1935 when the mill began operation until the end of 1946 total production from the mine was approximately 269,349 oz. gold and 69,317 oz. silver, having a value of $9,679,739, recovered from 823,527 tons of ore.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock has a total length of approximately 1 ½ miles and a width of about ½ mile. It was intruded into a complex synclinal fold in Timiskaming sediments. The sediments, which have been cut in only one place in the underground workings, are principally wellbedded greywackes. The stock is composed of large masses of diorite and granodiorite, a small mass of hornblende pyroxenite, and basic dykes of two ages. The diorite occurs as irregular masses in large measure surrounded by the granodiorite that it intrudes. It contains tabular crystals of andesine, having a maximum length of3/4 inch. The hornblende pyroxenite is an elongated lens or dyke in the diorite. The granodiorite masses occupy about two-thirds of the stock. Along its eastern side the main mass tends to become darker and more dioritic toward the diorite contact.Basic dykes of pre-vein and post-vein age are the youngest intrusive rocks at the mine."

The use of gold compounds in homogeneous catalysed organic reactions has been undervalued for many years due to the preconceived opinion that gold is an expensive and extremely chemically inert metal. However, recent reports have changed this assessment and gold salts in small amounts are known to display high catalytic activity.[1] Thus, it has been reported recently that anhydrous AuCl3 catalyses the formation of C-C and C-O bonds (usually mediated by hydrochloric and other protonic and Lewis acids).[2] Some examples include Michael type additions, selective cross cycloisomerisation/dimerisation of propargyl or allenyl ketones, benzannulation between o-alkynylbenzaldehides and alkynes or cyclisation of alkenyl furans. It is noteworthy that some of these reactions[2a] can be also catalysed by silver salts but with much lower yields. The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrones to alkenes is a powerful synthetic method that has found numerous applications in the synthesis of a variety of carbon frameworks.[3] Several laboratories have focused on the development of Lewis acidic reagents to modulate the selectivity of the reaction.[4] Despite the extensive study performed, there are not many examples in which a metallic complex catalyses the dipolar cycloaddition. Most of these reactions require the presence of a metallic complex and nitrone in a 1:1 molar ratio. Recently, we have carried out stoichiometric reactions of the N-benzil-C(2-pyridil)nitrone, 1, with different dipolarophiles in the presence of zinc and silver compounds.[5] Apart from an increase of the reaction rate and the selective formation of one of the possible isomers, we have shown the formation of zinc and silver-nitrone complexes during the reaction, which behave as the intermediates in the cycloaddition process. As suggested by the results obtained with silver complexes, we decided to test gold derivatives (in the oxidation states of I and III). Interestingly, we have found that they can be used not only as stoichiometric reagents but they can also mediate these cycloadditions in catalytic amounts (5 to 10 mol % respect to the nitrone). Here we present the results on the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of the N-benzil-C(2-pyridil)nitrone (2-PyBN), 1, and methylacrilate, 2, (Eq. 1) catalysed by gold(III) derivatives.

It is possible to selectively mine an orebody by combining the use of the SSW probe with any bulk mining methods as well as narrow vein exploitations. In other words, thanks to the use of the SSW probe, mining operators will be able to reduce and control dilution that is generally associated to every mining operation. Already, quick and substantial savings have been obtained. Falconbridge mines have demonstrated in Sudbury and Raglan operations, that the SSW probe can log nickel, copper and iron sulphides in blast holes. They have raised the grade and reduced dilution by outlining the limits of the ore zones before selectively loading explosives in the blast holes. By lowering the probe in a blast hole, a profile of the ore content is instantly measured and recorded. Logging cored diamond drill holes at the mine have demonstrated that the ore content (nickel, copper, cobalt, PGM) as assayed is proportional to the intensity of the probe?s electromagnetic response (EM), probably because the nickel / pyrrhotite ratio is uniform within a given orebody. The probe also measures the intrinsic conductivity of the sulphides and the percentage of magnetite. All probe readings are displayed and automatically stored at a 10-cm interval within the same reading unit. A 30-meter blast hole takes less than 2 minutes to survey. The whole instrument is light (12 kg) and very simple to use. One operator can carry the SSW system and survey either down or up-holes. The probe works from ?40°C to +50°C. Plotting the measurements of the SSW probe in blast holes (2-3-4-6-10 inches in diameter) before blasting allows to determine the exact shape of the orebody within the waste rock and uneconomic low-grade ore. Thus, only the portion of the holes that contains ore is blasted. The dilution is then much reduced and, by leaving the waste and low-grade ore in place, the mine saves on transportation, blasting, crushing, backfilling, milling, etc. Thousands of dollars are thus saved. Some savings may also be achieved during the development of stopes by guiding development drifts and by replacing diamond drilling by percussion drilling. In some circumstances, when the probe shows that some of the rich ore was not drilled-off, additional blast holes will allow to recover pockets of rich ore that otherwise would have been abandoned in the walls of a stope.

"There is a world-wide trend toward underground bulk mining methods employing hydraulically placed backfill. This trend is recent and therefore there is little in the literature to assist an operator in the design of backfill properties, the design of drainage facilities, the calculation of the operating forces on a bulkhead, and the control procedures considered necessary before, during and after pouring. This paper presents recommended procedures that are based on over to years of experience in the various aspects of backfilling large openings. Free-draining timber or concrete block bulkheads are shown to be a viable alternative to massive reinforced concrete bulkheads for the containment of backfill pours. Hydrostatic pressures cannot develop in backfills provided adquate drainage facilities are installed.IntroductionThe increasingly adverse relationship between mining costs and mineral values has led mining companies to develop more productive, lower-cost, bulk mining methods. This has led to the increasing use of large, more or less continuous, hydraulically placed backfill pours to enable the recovery of a higher proportion of pillar ore. The success of any bulk mining method depends on the degree of stability maintained during the stoping operations with reference to the mining rate, the performance of the backfill with respect to the per cent extraction of pillar ore, and the control of the mine structure with respect to safety and productivity. One such method has been previously described(I) where a steeply dipping orebody is being mined with a sub-level method that employs large, hydraulically placed tailings pours for delayed pillar recovery. The paper describes the rock mechanics analysis undertaken to establish the stope and pillar geometry and the approach taken to establish backfill strength requirements to prevent dilution during pillar recovery. Production with this method started in 1970 and because few, if any, large bulk pours had previously been used in- this way (judging by the lack of information in the literature), design data and criteria were needed for several aspects of the work. Methods to establish backfill quantities and pertinent ""in-place"" fill properties are described in 2, 3 and 4 in the list of references. Results of field measurements taken to establish fill pressures for bulkhead design purposes are described in 5 and 6. Laboratory large-scale model tests undertaken to confirm a fill strength design equation, which takes into account fill arching, have recently been completed. A paper describing these tests and the results will be forthcoming in the near future."

"The Edmonton region accounted for 40% of Alberta&apos;s sand and gravel production in 1981 (about 12 million m3). Most of this production was by commercial operations (75%) for use in essential public works projects (64% in road and asphalt production).Although the Alberta Geological Survey delineated 1157 million m3 of gravel, a number of areas are considered to be in short supply. An econometric model was used for forecast demand in the region. Predictions, based on this forecast and estimated supply, are that 15% of the region&apos;s gravel and 3% of the sand will be consumed by the year 2010.The City of Edmonton is the largest consumer of aggregate in the region. Approximately 40% of the gravel in Edmonton&apos;s current supply area (about 55 km radius) will be used by 2010. These estimates are considered optimistic because the supply figures do not account for sterilization of deposits - some has already taken place in the region. If 25% to 50% of Edmonton&apos;s current supplies (one major deposit) were sterilized it would result in $1,000 million of additional cost due to increased haulage alone.Information on the value of aggregate resources, the location of sand and gravel deposit s and forecast demand has been made available to all municipalities in the region to aid planners and regulators in effective future use of this important resource.INTRODUCTIONAlberta is the second largest producer of sand and gravel in Canada at ab out 50 million tonnes annually. Value of provincial production exceeded $120 million in 1985. In Albert a, aggregate is used primarily in road and building construction (about 50% and 15%, respectively) and is important in such activities as petroleum exploration, oil sands development and the forestry industry.The Edmonton region (Fig. I) accounts for about 40% of provincial production and has a per capita consumption rate of about 13.4 m3 of sand and gravel per annum. Although Edmonton dominates, with approximately 50% of regional production going into the city, aggregate is produced in every county and municipal district in the region.Sand and gravel is essential to the current way of life in the Edmonton region. The resource is valuable and dwindling. The Alberta Geological Survey (a department of the Alberta Research Council) has collected information on aggregate in this region for the last decade which ca n aid government planners and regulators in pre venting sterilization and misallocation of this critical resource. This paper is a summary of that information."

"The history and analysis of a structurally complex open-pit rock slope displacement are described. The failure involved part of the only haulage access to a major ore zone. The ongoing movement was monitored using an electronic distance measuring device and a continuous electronic system specifically designed for the problem. A major fault, infilled with a thick clay gouge, and intersected by other structural features, resulted in the transfer of weight to a rock mass acting as a buttress in the lower regions. Movements were affected by blasting vibrations and ground-water conditions. Remedial measures included limiting blasting levels and lowering the water table, following which mining was successfully resumed in the area.IntroductionBrenda Mines is situated in a mountainous region of the southern interior of British Columbia; the location is indicated on Figure 1 . The elevation is approximately 5000 ft , giving a climate typical of more northern areas. Temperatures vary from -30°C to + 30°C. A snowfall level of 400-800 cm is experienced from November to April. During the spring, a heavy runoff period occurs, increasing the pumping rate in the pit from a nominal 50* gal/min to 2000 gal/min.The orebody occurs in a fractured Jurassic rock mass referred to as the Brenda Stock; it is approximately 3000 ft in diameter and 1000 ft deep. The Brenda Stock was intruded into the Upper Triassic Nicola Group tuffs, breccias and argillites. Mineralization occurred in several stages in a relatively homogeneous quartz diorite host rock. Shearing, faulting and jointing occured later in many stages, producing mineralized clay gouge zones up to several feet in thickness&apos;> , These gouge zones have a major effect on the stability of the pit walls.The structural geology of the pit walls is otherwise relatively simple. Figure 2 is a conventional pole diagram indicating the orientation of the rock structural systems which are present. The major system has an average dip of approximately 70 degrees to the south and strikes approximately east /west , it is not undercu t by the pit slope. Figure 3 is a photograph of part of the North wall on which this system is indicated.The basic pit design consists of a working bench height of 50 ft, with a final wall height of 100 ft between berm s and a 100-ft-wide berm every second lift. Combined with a local face slope of 50-70 degrees, the resulting wall slope, not including haulage roads, is 45 degrees. Figures 4 and 5 are generalized plans and sectional views of the pit."

"La Mine Doyon is a gold mining operation located in northwestern Quebec, approximately 35 km east of Rouyn-Noranda and 85 km west of Val d&apos;Or. The mine is jointly owned by Lac Minerals Ltd. and Cambior Inc. with Lac Minerals as the manager. Production statistics as of February 1987 are 6.4 million tonnes milled at an average grade of5.8 g/t Au. Current reserves of9.9 million tonnes at 5. 7 g/ t Au to a depth of400m have been outlined. Indicated reserves below this horizon could considerably increase this reserve.The mine currently consists of two open pit and two underground mine operations, producing approximately 3600 tonnes per day of ore at an average grade of6 g/t. The ore is currently processed at the La Mine Doyon mill at a rate of1400tid and at Lac&apos;s East Malartic mill at 1950 t/d. Ore is also processed intermittently at Lac&apos;s Les Terrains Auriferes mill and at Noranda&apos;s Horne Division.La Mine Doyon is currently in the midst of a program to expand and upgrade the mill at La Mine Doyon. The expansion to 3000 t/day includes the conversion of the existing crushing and grinding circuits to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill circuit and the existing filter wash plant to a CIP (carbon-in-pulp) recovery plant. The economics of this project are based on reduced operating costs (milling and trucking) and improved recovery due to updated technology. HistoryThe area between Noranda and Val d&apos;Or has a long history of mining activity in both base metals and gold, dating back to the early 1930s. More recently, several new orebodies have been discovered and exploited in the area including La Mine Doyon, Lac&apos;s Mine de Bousquet, Dumagami, and the Kiena operation.La Mine Doyon was discovered in the early 1970s, and brought into limited production in late 1979. The mine was started on are reserves of 2.75 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t and was, thus, considered a small, short-term operation. Mining started at an initial rate of 550 tI d with all the ore being shipped to Noranda&apos;s Horne smelter as flux. When Lac&apos;s East Malartic mill became available for custom milling, Doyon commenced shipping to that facility at a rate of 650 t/d. As a result of some equipment additions and an improved understanding of the ore, the East Malartic mill throughput was gradually increased from 650 t/d to the current rate of 1950 t/d."

"Large-diameter flotation columns are subject to severe axial mixing which has reduced column recovery and has generally limited it to cleaner applications. It has been assumed that columns with diameter greater than 1 m should be baffled to reduce axial mixing, but little work has been reported quantifying the effectiveness of baffling. Tests were done on a 0.2 m by 2 m column fitted with baffles of different geometry. It was generally found that the inclusion of baffles in the column worsened rather than improved mixing conditions in the column. This is explained in terms of a model for the effect of poor gas distribution on the behaviour of the column; this showed that under typical conditions a 16% excess of gas flux in the one compartment of a two-compartment column could result in one of the compartments being ""dead"" (i.e. with no net flow of slurry through it), resulting in a substantial loss of performance. The quality of mixing in the laboratory column was only reliably improved when the baffle was raised so that its top was positioned above the froth-slurry interface level. It should be possible to increase column recovery substantially with this configuration. The improved residence time distribution also means that columns can be used more effectively in roughing and scavenging applications. IntroductionFlotation columns have generally been used in cleaner applications, starting with their dramatic success at Mines Gaspe(1). Their lack of applications as roughers and scavengers is probably due to their poor residence time distribution (RID) when compared to the conventional cells they would replace. Espinosa-Gomez et al,(2) recently used them in rougher applications but installed three columns in series, presumably to cope with this disadvantage.Dobby and Finch in their seminal papersl(3,4) on the scale-up of flotation columns were the first to quantify the impact of axial mixing on the performance of industrial flotation columns. Laplante et al.(5) collected further data from the literature for column diameter D, ranging between 5 cm and 183 cm, gas superficial velocity Jg ranging between 0.7 cm/s and 2.8 cm/s and per cent solids in the feed S ranging between 3% and 52%. These data were analyzed with reference to the axial mixing model using the boundary conditions for closed vessels (the latter are more appropriate for flotation columns but the model is more difficult to use because analytical solutions for the RID are not available). "The results of a series of model stope pours designed to investigate working pressures on bulkheads during hydraulic pouring of classified tailings backfill are reported. Total bulkhead pressures and fill water pressures were monitored under the condition of a fully saturated backfill. Similitude of the model testing is discussed and equations are developed to estimate bulkhead pressures under prototype conditions. The model results show that good base drainage, combined with a bulkhead setback, can reduce the expected bulkhead pressures to values such that timber or concrete block structures should be capable of supporting a saturated backfill. Introduction Bulkheads are used in underground running operations to block drift openings in order that hydraulically placed sand backfill can be contained in stope pours. Whenever possible, the sand fill is designed to have sufficient percolation rate so that excess hydraulic transport water will gravity drain out through the bulk headed drifts. This avoids costly decanting systems. Early bulkhead design assumed that the bulkhead pressure could be as high as 0h = Hy where H is the fill height and ""y is the saturated unit weight of the fill (Thomas et al., 1979)(1). A typical design pressure for a 50 m fill height would be 1250 kPa giving a design force of 12,500 kN on a bulkhead located in a drift of 10m2 in area . Typical bulkheads were 1 m thick heavily reinforced concrete structures formed and poured into a notched drift. Not only were these expensive structures but the associated problems of inside drainage systems and curing time delays increased production costs. As experience with bulkheads for large bulk pours increased and fill pressure measurements became available [see, for examples, Libby et al., 1975(2), Askey et al., 1978(3)] , &apos;free drainage&apos; timber and concrete block bulkheads were designed. Substantial savings have been realized using these types of bulkheads but greater engineering design and monitoring of backfill pours is necessary to ensure that backfill pressures do not exceed the bulkhead design pressures.The effective and total stress components of fill pressure, the engineering concepts associated with the &apos;free drainage&apos; design and some detailed design considerations have been discussed by Smith and Mitchell (1982)(4) . It is important to the safe use of these designs, however, that the basic engineering concepts be demonstrated and communicated to those responsible for the day-to-day backfill operations. This paper describes and explains observations from a series of model studies designed to measure bulkhead pressures in a saturated fill."
