"Verifying the quality of cast-in-place foundation applications, particularly those cast under slurry, is of course important, due to its great dependency on the methodology employed and on the practices of the site personnel. Due to the techniques used to install these elements, it is usually not possible to inspect the hole prior to grout or concrete placement, but there are several Non Destructive Test (NDT) methods available to assess the integrity of the completed foundation elements. This paper will compare several NDT methods with the Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) method for verifying the integrity in Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles and Bored Piles. The Thermal Integrity Profiling method will be described and some examples will be presented where TIP testing was used to confirm the structural integrity of CFA piles and Bored Piles.IntroductionThere are several Non Destructive Test (NDT) methods available for integrity testing of foundation elements. Each of those methods has advantages and disadvantages (White et al, 2008). Some methods test the integrity based on the reflections of a stress-wave generated by low or high-strain impact, while others require tubes to be installed prior to concrete pouring, and test the integrity between those tubes, or within a small proximity of them. The former methods (especially the low-strain) are faster and more cost-effective, but are not able to detect the quadrant where the damage is located. The latter methods are able to determine the quadrant, but do not test the region outside of the reinforcing cage, that is, they are not able to determine the concrete cover. The Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) NDT method overcomes the limitations of these other NDT methods.Overview of Shaft Integrity MethodsUntil now, the most widely used methods to test the integrity of Bored and CFA piles were the low-strain pile integrity testing and the cross-hole ultra-sonic testing. The low-strain method for integrity testing (PIT) involves attaching an accelerometer usually to the pile top (using a putty or wax) and striking the pile surface with a handheld hammer, which causes a compressive wave to enter the pile. This wave is totally reflected when it reaches the end of the pile or a major defect, and is partially reflected when it encounters any change in crosssection, or a change in the resistance or density of the pile material. These reflections arrive at the top at a time determined by the distance and wave speed, and causes a noticeable change in the signal detected by the accelerometer. The acceleration signal is normally converted to velocity by simple integration, and sometimes the force applied by the hammer is also measured. The velocity (and force) signals can be processed by the pulse-echo method (in the time domain) or by the transient response method (in the frequency domain)."

This paper presents a case study of a piling contract undertaken at Keble College in Oxford in the year 2001. Unusually, and for the first time in the United Kingdom, piles were successfully constructed containing a network of plastic pipes, which are subsequently to be connected to the heating and cooling system for the new building. The pipes cast in the piles facilitate the transfer and storage of geothermal energy between the structure and the underlying ground mass, allowing the new building to be both heated in winter and cooled in summer economically and in an environmentally friendly way. The philosophy of the geothermal pile technology is presented, together with the modified pile construction techniques employed on the site.

"A 17 story building was constructed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on a site with a long history of development. Most recently the site supported a dewatering well and craneway to service two adjacent drydocks. The subsurface conditions generally consist of the following strata and approximate depths: miscellaneous fill and debris to 20 ft., organic soils to 35 ft., liquefiable sand to 45 ft., varved clay to 65 ft., glacial till to 95 ft. and gneiss bedrock.Hollow core bar piles replaced 18 in. diameter caissons on a 1.67:1 basis. The resulting service loads on the hollow bar piles were 600 kips compression, 21 kips lateral, 180 kips tension and 450 inch-kips moment. The top 30 feet of the hollow bar was cased with a 16 in. x 0.375 in. Grade 50 steel pipe. The piles were socketed 6 feet into bedrock. An extensive load testing program confirmed the axial and lateral load capacities. The paper will also discuss some adjustments to the installation procedure based on the load test program.PROJECTThe hollow bar piles were installed to support a 95,000 sf footprint, 17-story office building at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Brooklyn Navy Yard was first developed in the late 1700’s to build merchant vessels. The federal government purchased the old docks and adjoining 40 acres in 1801. The site was an active U. S. Naval Shipyard from 1806 to its decommissioning in 1966. At its peak in World War II it employed 70,000 people, 24 hours a day. Since 1966 the property has been converted to private manufacturing and commercial activity.The site is located between Dry Docks 2 and 3. The adjacent drydocks extend 40 to 43 feet below grade. The drydock walls are restrained by tierods extending back to deadman anchors. The site is also underlain by piles that were installed to support rail lines and a craneway. The building footprint also covered an 85 ft. wide, 70 ft. deep dewatering well which had a thick slab. The structural engineer for the project, ARUP, designed the building to span over the dewatering well.SUBSURFACE CONDITIONSIn September 2014, Langan Engineering conducted a geotechnical engineering study for the project. Figure 1 provides a subsurface profile through the long axis of the site. The general soil profile was very erratic but generally consisted of miscellaneous fill and debris to 20 ft., organic soils to 35 ft., liquefiable sand to 45 ft., varved clay to 65 ft., glacial till to 95 ft. and gneiss bedrock. The fill contained numerous obstructions from the over 200 years of site development. The organic soils were mostly very weak and compressible organic silt. The depths and thicknesses of the varved clay, and sand varied"

"New developments are required day by day. On the one hand site to improve the actual situation, on the other hand site to create the future and to ensure that future demands can be fulfilled. This requires for instance the development of technical support systems, which enable a more constant and quality ensured installation of special foundation products like piles. As part of the quality control, real time installation control of the production process, data transfer and reporting systems become more and more important ensuring the five dimensions of a jobsite. That means not only the three well known dimensions (width, height, depth) are cover, but also the dimension of time and money. Beside small, but important, details, also the demand of extending the use of methodologies in terms of getting deeper or allow their use in various soil conditions require the development of new tools and equipment. Therefore, the paper will describe some of these new approaches and activities required for these new developments. It will describe also the main equipment which will be needed to execute these works under the various conditionsINTRODUCTIONNew developments are required day by day. "Toronto’s Union Station, a National Historic Site occupying an entire city block, is the busiest commuter rail transportation hub in Canada. An extensive project is being undertaken to revitalize Union Station while maintaining the historical significance of the building and minimizing disruption to commuters. A significant stage of the revitalization involves excavation indoors, to a depth of up to 5.5 m below the existing floor level to create space for a new transit concourse and a new lower-level pedestrian retail concourse. A hybrid excavation support system utilizing micropiles as soldier piles was constructed over an 18 month period between 2010 and 2011.Development and testing of connections between the micropiles, shotcrete facing, lagging, walers, and tiebacks presented significant challenges. The existing viaduct structure was constructed in the 1920’s on land reclaimed from Toronto Harbour, so there was significant (and ongoing) uncertainty with respect to buried obstructions including relic timber wharfs and abandoned steel and timber piles. Collectively all these conditions precluded the use of conventional methodology; new techniques, installed using modified equipment, and for the first time in the Greater Toronto Area, were required.Details of the existing site conditions, installation challenges, design, construction and performance of the hybrid excavation support system inside this historic structure are presented.INTRODUCTIONUnion Station in Toronto, Ontario is the busiest passenger rail facility in Canada, with 65 million passengers annually and an average of 200,000 passengers each day. Construction of the station was completed in 1920. It has been designated a National Historic Site of Canada and inducted into the North America Railway Hall of Fame in the Facility and Structure category.The Union Station Revitalization Project (USRP) was tendered in 2010 and awarded as a 6-year, $450M construction management / trade contract package. Included was a large scale grade reduction, referred to as “The Dig Down”, to create two basement levels and this required extensive excavation support constructed entirely indoors within the active station setting."

"Tailing pond of an iron ore mine necessitated raising the height of its embankment to create additional storage capacity. The tailing pond is located in eastern India and raising the height of embankment was going on during the month of January, 2014. Upstream method of construction was adopted since there was no space available at the downstream side. During the construction, about 200 m stretch of the north east embankment of height about 5.5 m failed forming a classical slip circle on the upstream side involving about half the top width of the embankment. To find out the root cause of the slope failure, detail geotechnical investigation work was carried out within the embankment as well as in the adjacent areas within the pond. About 7.5m thick very soft tailings were detected below the constructed embankment. Shear strength of the soft tailing was very low and was inadequate to sustain imposed embankment load. This resulted in the failure of the embankment. Analysis of the tailing deposit revealed that even after failure, settlement was continuing due to imposed embankment load. Under normal onedimensional consolidation, the tailing deposit would have taken about 5.7 years for 90% of primary consolidation. However, in order to mitigate the scarcity of storage space, mining plan required raising the height of the embankment within next six to eight months. Therefore, despite the fact that there was a failure, it was necessary to continue the construction on the underlying weak stratum. The system was redesigned with installation of prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) to accelerate the consolidation process thereby gaining the in-situ strength. Strength was additionally enhanced by installing geogrids in multiple layers. It stabilized the existing embankment and also ensured construction of additional height over and above the existing embankment.INTRODUCTIONBeneficiation plant in the Iron mines enhances the mineral content by separation of contaminants and fines. The residue (waste material) is called tailings/tailings depending upon the grain sizes. These tailings in a slurry form are generally disposed in a pond called as tailing pond/tailing pond. Height of embankment of such ponds is increased either by upstream or by downstream or by centrally raising methods in different phases as quantum of deposition in the pond increases with time."

"The application of piled raft foundations has significantly increased during the last few years. In this system, the raft and the pile group collectively transfer the applied building load to the underlying soil layers. Determination of load sharing between the raft and the piles derives the complexity of piled raft designs due to its multi-parameter nature. These parameters are but not limited to: soil density, pile length, pile spacing, raft geometry, and piles installation technique. This study is to examine experimentally the effect of sand density and pile installation techniques on the load sharing mechanism. Experimentally, tests were conducted on a square rigid raft with a single pile in sand under three different soil densities; 30%, 45%, and 60%. The experimental results are used to determine the pile and the raft shares in non-displacement and displacement piled raft systems. The results of this study reveal that soil density changes the load sharing of displacement piled raft; the pile share increases in higher soil density. However, this is not the case in non-displacement piled raft and load sharing is independent of soil density in working loads.IntroductionThe piled raft foundation is a combination of shallow and deep foundation which transfers the superstructure load to the soil by a complex soilstructure interaction. The interacting mechanism among foundation elements and their surrounding soil is illustrated schematically in Figure 1 and could be classified into two categories: (1) pile-soil-pile and (2) pile-soil-raft. The pile-soil-pile interaction is the same as the free standing pile group and is a function of pile spacing and pile installation method. Pile-soil-raft interaction, which only involves in piled raft foundation design, could be affected by: the length, spacing, and roughness of the pile, the rigidity and dimension of the cap, soil condition, and the pile installation method. Pile-soil-raft interaction could have favourable and unfavourable effects on bearing capacity and settlement, respectively. The pressure between the cap and the soil favourably increases the horizontal stress on the pile shaft and consequently increase the shaft resistance. Whereas, this pressure induces negative skin friction on the piles which increases the settlement. The pile-soil-raft interaction mainly controls the load sharing mechanism of piled raft foundation when pile spacing (S) is more than 3.5dp."

Temporary working platforms are generally required in order to ensure that heavy construction machinery such as drilling and trench wall units, pile drivers, vehicle and crawler cranes can be set up safely at the site of operation. Considering all possible operating and loading conditions, especially on ground of low shear strength and stiffness, the design and construction of temporary mobile working platforms needs to be considered more as a serious engineering task than as a second order structure of minor relevance. Working platforms reinforced with one or several geosynthetic layers have proven to be especially effective with regard to stability, serviceability and durability but their design requests even more sophisticated approaches. Existing design models are often based on simplified assumptions and do not consider the complex interaction between construction machinery, working platform and subgrade. Non-monotonic loading as well as elastoplastic and time-variant deformation of cohesive subsoil can adversely affect the base layer system and the serviceability and stability of the construction machinery operating on it. In this context, there is a need for improvement of design approaches and their optimisation considering that there are no generally accepted design approaches or technical codes of practice available for the design of temporary working platforms. The present paper deals with the multifaceted and non-trivial interaction effects of working platforms investigated by model tests, field measurements and numerical simulations to develop a design approach that ensures a safe installation and operation of heavy plants on unstable ground.

"Solidification/stabilization (S/S) treatment is used to treat hazardous wastes for disposal and in the remediation/site restoration of contaminated land . SIS is also an increasingly popular technology for Brownfield (industrial property) redevelopment, since treated wastes can often be left on-site and to improve the soil for subsequent construction. This paper discusses the applicability of the technology to various wastes, basic cement chemistry relating to SIS, tests used to design treatability studies and to verify treatment, basics on implementation of the technology in the field , and examples of SIS use at brownfield sites, including a former wood preserving site, former manufactured gas plant sites, a former electric generating station, and a shopping mall development.INTRODUCTIONSolidification/Stabilization (S/S) is a widely used treatment for the management/disposal of a broad range of contaminated media and wastes; particularly those contaminated with substances classified as hazardous in the United States. The treatment involves mixing a binding reagent into the contaminated media or waste. The treatment protects human health and the environment by immobilizing contaminants within the treated material. Immobilization within the treated material prevents migration of the contaminants to human, animal and plant receptors. SIS treatment has been used to treat radioactive wastes since the 1950s and hazardous waste since the 1970's (Conner 1990). SIS continues as a cornerstone treatment technology for the management of radioactive waste, hazardous waste, and site remediation and Brownfield redevelopment."

The author is trying to clarify the existing problems in designing and laying out dynamic consolidation for soft ground improvement. Field testings and observations including vibrational parameters, pore pressures, stereoscopic photogrammetry etc. were run in order to trace the real behaviour of ground movement during tamping. It is believed that all the data got from the field work are rather informative and illustrative than that from theoretical modelling in the laboratory, thus some highlights relating effective thickness of compaction, maximum spacing between compaction points, number of blows for optimum tamping and seismic attenuation for environmental consideration are given.

As Technical Director of the Naples, Italy based Fondedile, a geotechnical construction firm specializing in static restoration of structures, Fernando Lizzi, Ing., devoted over 30 years to the pursuit and advancement of static restoration and subsoil strengthening. Seismic events, construction of new structures on polluted and/or unstable soils in urban areas, and a need to carefully preserve and restore delicate, war-damaged historical structures, manifested the need for underpinning projects. Traditional construction methods and approaches, such as underpinning with additional foundation masonry, were not suitable and would have further jeopardized the stability of the structures. The introduction of the palo radice (root pile) revolutionized the field of underpinning. At the time of the first application of micropiles, the industry standard was driven piles. The drilled micropile was conceived and first implemented in the early 1950s, as an innovative means to underpin sensitive, historic structures and structures in urban areas. Specifically, the new construction technique was conceived as a less expensive alternative, designed to accept structural loads, be installed in limited access areas, in varied working and sub-surface conditions, which did not involve changing soil characteristics, and had minimal disturbance to the structure being underpinned, or to adjacent structures.

Construction of a new ship dock at a major Philadelphia area refinery required geotechnical design and field consultation. The new dock, which consists of a system of mooring dolphins and platforms, will be capable of docking the Stena V-MAX Oil Tanker (V-MAX). The 1100 ft long V-MAX is currently the largest tanker to travel the Delaware River and will induce significant lateral loads on the new ship dock. Lateral loads induced on the dock will be resisted by over 200 pipe piles installed on a batter. The piles used for support of the dock included 20 and 30 in. diameter reinforced, concrete filled pipe piles. Complete construction of each pile included driving of the pile to the design ultimate capacity, flushing the pipe pile casing clean of overburden materials followed by drilling rock sockets into the underlying Wissahickon Formation. Variations in depth to bedrock, rock quality and degree of weathering and presence of very hard quartzite lenses created a complex geologic environment that presented challenges for the pile/rock socket design and installation. The design of the pile system, installation methods, QA/QC and testing (Pile Dynamic Analysis), as well as the challenges that were encountered through the duration of the project are presented and discussed.

Recently, large diameter drilled shafts are often used for foundations of large-scale marine bridges with high capacity and required to resist lateral loads. Steel casings are essential in supporting the hole-diving concrete installation of the drill shafts constructed in the sea. The casings, however, are usually not considered as the structural elements and their load bearing capacity is often overlooked in the design of drilled shafts. As the diameter of drilled shafts becomes larger, there are higher demands for more efficient and economical design of large-scaled drill shafts in the sea. Steel-concrete composite columns are popular for the superstructure of bridges, and the outer steel attached to the shaft increases the shaft resistance through confining the concrete. In this study, the lateral resistance of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts was evaluated quantitatively based on the numerical analysis. When steel casings are used as structural elements such as the composite columns. Ultimate lateral bearing capacity of composite drilled shafts with various diameters was numerically calculated through the 3D finite element analysis. For that, elasto-plastic model with the perfect plasticity is involved to capture the ultimate load. A commercial FEA program, MIDAS-GTS, is used in this study. Real field conditions of the west coast, Korea were examined to set up the ground conditions and pile lengths required for this parametric studies. Detailed characteristics of the stress and displacement distributions are evaluated for the better understanding on the mechanisms of the composite shaft behavior.

Analysis of deep foundations in terms of axial capacity has been a topic of great interest in the soil-structure interaction problems. Soil behavior is governed by a series of complex stress-strain changes that occur during pile installation and subsequent loading. Owing to the difficulties and uncertainties on the basis of the soil strength-deformation characteristics, one of the most frequently followed design practice is to refer to the formulae correlating directly the pile axial capacity components of unit base resistance (qb) and unit shaft resistance (fp) to the data collected from cone penetration test (CPT), i.e. to the tip stress (qc or more proper qt), sleeve friction (fs), and shoulder pore water pressure (u2). The elementary basis for such formulations has been the idea of considering cone penetrometer as a mini-pile foundation. This has resulted in plethora of correlative relationships in the past over 60 years. Such correlations, although empirical, have been worked out on the basis of load test results from both instrumented and un-instrumented full scale piles and are able to accommodate many important variables. A quick review of the evolution process and development of such design formulations is presented with a view to propose recommendations for future research directions, where the latest version of CPT i.e. seismic piezocone test (SCPTu) can be used to advance from capacitysingularity to the complete axial pile load–displacement (Q–w) response.

The City of Manchester is hosting the 2002 Commonwealth Games. A world class Stadium with a 38,000 capacity was commissioned for a site located close to the City Centre. The Stadium location is in an area that was derelict and in need of regeneration and it is envisaged that the Stadium will be the spur for this. The industrial and residential history of the site has left a legacy of buried foundations together with chemically contaminated soils. This Made Ground deposit overlies Glacial Deposits which in turn overlie bedrocks of the Central Manchester Coalfield. Coal mining has taken place from at least 1761 leaving several worked seams and shafts. In order to support the stadium, 1159 conventional augured piles of 600 to 1200mm diameters were used. This paper will deal primarily with the piling operations and testing, but will also discuss the coal seam treatment with respect to piling. A substantial trial pile test programme was carried out together with 11 static load tests on contract piles. The results of the pile tests will be discussed and conclusions drawn.

The Trenton Water Treatment Facility in Trenton, New Jersey, is expanding to upgrade existing facilities and to meet the increasing demands of the public. The facility sits uncomfortably between the northern bank of the Delaware River and Route 29, a busy traffic corridor. Flooding along this bank of the river occurs frequently and disrupts traffic along Route 29. The expansion plans for the facility call for several large clarifying tanks on a mat foundation covering an area of about 100 x 350 ft. The original design was to remove and replace up to 20 ft of existing fill and soft materials. Due to the close proximity to the existing structures and the Delaware River, it would be necessary to use sheet piles and tiebacks to support the proposed excavation, as well as the existing structures. The solution adopted consisted of the installation of vibro-replacement stone columns to improve the in situ soils and eliminate the need for excavation and replacement. This approach was tremendously successful. It mitigated the significant risk of flooding of the excavation, and provided a cost-effective alternative to mitigate settlement of the proposed tanks on the poor soft subgrade soils. This paper presents the details of the criteria for selection and design of the stone columns, and the process followed for installation of the stone columns and for verification of the level of soil improvement achieved. It also includes a back analysis of the results of a large scale, 10- by 10-foot plate load test performed on a group of stone columns using numerical procedures and recommendations for design and construction.

Results from full-scale loading tests showed the use of the dynamic increasing energy test (DIET) to verify the capacity of deep foundations. This method allows the measurement of dynamic resistance - displacement curve and the prediction of the static resistance -displacement curve of the pile-soil system. The comparison between the use of DIET versus the static load test is also considered herein. This work was divided in two different phases, the first accomplished in Salvador (Bahia) and the second in Brasilia (Federal District), both in Brazil. The first phase consisted of field loading tests carried out on piles comprised by an approximate 10 to 12 meters thick deposit of fine saturated sand, overlying a stiff clay layer, which is found in certain areas of the Brazilian Northeast. Two metallic (rail track) piles were field loaded in this site. One of them was dynamically tested and the other was statically tested. The second site belongs to the Post Graduate Program of the University of Brasilia. It is comprised by an approximate 8 to 14 meter think deposit of porous clay, overlying a hard strata of saprolitic state. In this site a unique precast driven centrifuged pile was tested. The DIET procedure has demonstrated to be a tool of fast execution and low cost (if compared to static load test). It is a promising procedure to evaluate the behavior of pile-soil system.

The choice of a design concept for a bridge foundation is guided by various factors; several of these factors are indeed of technical origin, like the environmental conditions in a broad sense, but others non technical factors may also have a profound impact on the final design concept. The foundations solutions adopted for the Rion Antirion bridge are described and an attempt is made to pinpoint the major factors that have guided the final choices. The Rion Antirion bridge is exemplar in that respect: the foundation concept combines the simplicity of capacity design, the conceptual facility of construction and enhances the foundation safety. The design of these foundations was a very challenging task which required full cooperation and close interaction with all the parties involved: concessionaire, contractor, designers and design checker.
