Ferromanganese crusts are found on most hard-rock substrates in the deep ocean (800-3,000 m). Their distributions on seamounts are complex and controlled by a wide-variety of factors including seamount morphology, current patterns, mass wasting, substrate rock type and age, subsidence history, and others. However, the development of this potential resource ultimately depends on this distribution, as well as on the small-scale topography, grade, and tonnage. The parameters that will ultimately be used to define a mine site are unknown, but reasonable assumptions based on 25 years of data collection can be used to bracket likely permissive characteristics.

Major interest and investment in southern Africa's west coast diamond deposits have resulted in the development of various tools for sampling and mining in the varied geological conditions encountered. Namco's project progression from sampling to mining is discussed with particular reference to the ROV technology employed for both phases of the operation. The Namrod sampling tool was mobilised in June 1995 and following extensive sampling resulting in resource definition, detailed research, design, and engineering was undertaken to develop the NamSSol mining system in conjunction with SubSea Offshore Ltd., a Dresser Industries company. Mining operations commenced in early 1998. History of the background to the development leading to design criteria, engineering considerations, operational parameters and discussion of field performance are presented. The innovative systems employed by Namco represent significant developments in a rapidly expanding technological field.

A seafloor based robotic drilling system is being developed for the National Institute of Ocean Technology in Chennai, India to support a National initiative for marine methane hydrate research. The system will be capable of core sampling to 150m below the seafloor in 3000m of water under telemetric control of an operator onboard a research vessel at the surface. Unlike previous robotic drilling systems, this unit (designated the ACS) will use wireline methodology to reduce the number of tool handling operations required to complete the borehole (conventional rod drilling requires 2025 tool handling operations to complete a 100m hole, while wireline requires only 48 operations to reach the same depth).

Modern Kuroko-type deposits have been much reported in submarine calderas and cauldrons in the EEZ of Japan since 1988. Some of them have been found based on heavy mineral analysis of sediments in which sulfide particles may be derived from hydrothermal sources in the ambient areas. From the end of August to early September 2007, in the middle Izu-Ogasawara arc south of Tokyo, ROV expeditions were carried out in submarine calderas in order to examine mineralogical features between intact heavy particles spouting out from sulfide chimneys and heavy minerals such as sulfides in sediments around sulfide mounds in Kuroko-type deposits, and to find more newly formed hydrothermal sulfide fields in those areas. Some preliminary results from the ROV expeditions are reported here.

Every year approximately 22 million tonnes of marine sand and gravel are dredged form British waters. The eastern English Channel (EEC) contains substantial reserves, a proportion of which have been identified by the aggregates industry for potential future exploitation. The main aim of this study is to produce broadscale marine habitat maps of the EEC area. The UK aggregates industry has formed a consortium of representatives (the eastern English Channel Association), and have sponsored an initial baseline survey and follow-up sampling programmes as part of a Regional Environmental Assessment (REA) covering a patchwork of aggregate prospecting areas. To complement this effort, a large-scale geophysical survey was conducted in 2005 to place the REA in a wider spatial context and, thereby, to help assess the environmental significance of any future impacts arising from commercial aggregate extraction over the broader region of the EEC.

Various kinds of sediment-hosted polymetallic sulfide deposit are known on land in ancient marine sequences, many tending to be larger and more valuable than massive sulfide deposits genetically associated with volcanic host rocks. Often such deposits are attributed to subhalative or shallow sub-seafloor precipitation processes, and structural control by faulting is commonly evident. Apart from the famous but anomalous Red Sea metallic oozes and several NE Pacific sites (Middle Valley, Escanaba Trough, Guaymas Basin), however, modern analogs of the sediment-hosted polymetallic sulfide category are lacking. Some deposits hosted by volcaniclastic rocks, such as JADE (Okinawa Trough) and Suzette (Eastern Manus Basin) are strictly sediment-hosted, but their formation is associated with the igneous activity and they are better considered a variant of the more abundant volcanic-associated polymetallic sulfide deposits.

The exploration of the seafloor regarding the abundances of poly-metallic nodules has received growing attention recently. Image-based exploration using cameraequipped deep-sea observation systems has been introduced successfully to increase spatial resolution in the exploration process but the evaluation and interpretation of the huge amount of image data creates a serious bottleneck. In this paper we present a new software solution to the problem of automatic detection and segmentation of poly-metallic nodules in underwater images, which is not only accurate but so fast that real time image analysis is definitely in reach. Thus, an application on an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) seems possible in the near future.

Ferromanganese crusts on the seamounts in the Pacific Ocean are potential resources of cobalt, nickel, platinum and REEs. Particularly, those of the Republic of Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) waters are believed to be of the highest resources potential area in the Pacific Ocean. The total six cruises using the Japanese Research Vessel Hakurei Maru No. 2 were carried out in the seamounts of the Marshall Islands in 1996, 1998 and 2002, and of the FSM in the 1997, 1998 and 2005 for evaluation of economic potential for cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts as part of the Japan-SOPAC joint project. During these cruises numerous data such as bathymetric, geological, geophysical and environmental data were obtained. Geophysical exploration with backscatter mapping and side scan sonar, visual imaging using towed TV camera and geological sampling using dredge bucket and/or benthic multi-coring system (BMS) were conducted on these seamounts. In this presentation, we will report the mode of distribution of the crusts and calculated resource estimation based on the results of these geological and geophysical shipboard survey and land-based analyses. Stephen D. Scott Steven Scott is a Professor of Geology, Director of the Marine Geology Research Laboratory and, until May 1997, was Chairman for 9 years of Geological and Mining Engineering, all at the University of Toronto. Steve also holds a cross appointment at the University of Western Brittany's European University Institute of the Sea in Brest, France. He was educated at the University of Western Ontario (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) and at Penn State (Ph.D.). Steve is a geologist/oceanographer specializing in base and precious metal massive sulfide deposits which he and his students have studied on five continents and on the bottom of three oceans. He was the first ore deposits geologist and first Canadian to witness "black smokers" on the ocean floor. Since 1982, he has participated on 21 oceanographic surface and submersible expeditions, many of them as Chief Scientist. His research team is currently carrying out projects in the W and NE Pacific Ocean. Steve has published more than 150 research papers and lectured in more than a dozen counties. Popularized accounts of his work have appeared in various media.. He has been honored by several awards and distinguished lectureships. Steve is President of the Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility, which operates the Canadian ROPOS robotic submersible, and is President of the International Marine Minerals Society.

Hyperspectral remote sensing has been used extensively on land to identify minerals for the mining industries. An underwater hyperspectral imager (UHI) has been developed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. It captures optical fingerprints within the spectral range of 400-700 nanometers, with 1 nm resolution. The UHI has been tested on nodules and SMS deposits in the laboratory and on the sea floor to establish if this technology can be used to identify marine mineral deposits, to determine type of deposit and distribution.

Six active Kermadec arc submarine volcanoes, located between 34°S and 36°30'S were mapped and sampled between April and July 2005, using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mothership R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa. The purpose was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits, structure of the volcanoes, and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, including metal-rich plumes and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial polymetallic sulfide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of approximately 1,650 meters near the base of the northwest caldera wall of Brothers volcano has produced a field of chimneys, up to seven meters high and discharging black smoker venting. Temperatures up to 300°C were measured from the active vents. Clark volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 meters. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with five-meter tall venting chimneys with smaller structures around the periphery. Water temperatures of 200°C were recorded for these chimneys.

Gregg Marine, Inc. (headquartered in Signal Hill, California) has recently introduced an innovative seafloor drill system for offshore geotechnical site investigation and seafloor mineral exploration. The system is capable of working in water depths of up to 3,000 meters and is rated to drill to a depth of approximately 150 meters below mudline. The remote operated system integrates established drilling technology with proven Schilling telemetry and controls. The flexible nature of the patented wireline drilling technology enables the use of standard sampling systems (up to PQ-size core and 3? thin-walled tubes) as well as downhole testing systems (including CPT testing, vane shear testing, downhole sensors and borehole geophysical tools). The modular nature of the seabed drill system and the accompanying launch and recovery system (LARS) enables the use of local vessels of opportunity for projects resulting in reduced project costs and improved mobilization responsiveness times. Research on marine gas hydrate and the methane cycle has a tradition at IFM-GEOMAR. In summer 1996 during a cruise with RV SONNE offshore Oregon (USA) scientists of the former GEOMAR recovered the largest amount of gas hydrate from the seafloor. This discovery stimulated research on marine gas hydrates in Germany and induced funding of scientific programs such as LOTUS and OMEGA with numerous innovative technologies within the special program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN of BMBF and DFG. The primary objectives of ongoing and future research are to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of: • gas hydrate distribution and quantity; • variation and regulation of gas hydrate formation and dissociation as well as of the related fluid flow; • functioning of chemosynthetic communities in methane oxidation, carbonate precipitation and methanotrophy as biological barrier against methane emission and • delineating the escape routes of methane to the hydrosphere and atmosphere.

The marine diamond industry off south-western Africa is maturing rapidly. Some of the larger explorers have reached an advanced stage in their resource development and new mining operations have been started in the last year. Most of the major exploration, mining and marine engineering companies have offices in Cape Town. As a result of the increased activity and experiences to date, new approaches to marine diamond exploration and mining are now evolving. Primary factors contributing the new approaches are namely 1) the concentration of expertise in a localised area 2) the significant increase in the base of available exploration and production results and 3) parallel advances in the marine engineering design and geophysical survey equipment. The sea floor geology and setting of the marine diamond exploration areas is now better understood. Consequently the strategy for exploration and the selection of appropriate survey equipment is improved. Due to new equipment developments, different exploration alternatives now exist, depending on the programme objectives. Significant advances have also been made in the data processing and modelling undertaken to assist in the identification and targeting of potentially diamondiferous prospecting features. Similarly, the design of appropriate prospecting tools and programmes has also been improved. Following exposure to the requirements of the marine diamond industry, the design engineering and operating companies have responded with innovative designs for new prospecting tools. In recent years the availability of relevant information on marine diamond prospecting and production has increased. As a result, there is now sufficient basis for the construction of meaningful financial valuation models that can be effectively used to control and guide the exploration projects, to the benefit of both the explorer and the investor.

Recommendations have been drafted following an international multidisciplinary panel discussion organized at UNESCO/IOC by the Académie des Sciences d?Outre-Mer on 15 December 2010 conveyed, according to its mandate, to the French government and to an international pool of scientists and stakeholders. These take into consideration the relevant Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982, the Rio ?Earth Summit? Convention of Biological Diversity of 5 June 1992 as well as the activities and recommendations implemented for the world?s oceans and seas, in particular by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the recent reports and scientific works (including those implemented by the ISA Kaplan, Ifremer, COI-Unesco). The recommendations integrate, for one of the ecosystems, the conclusions of the project of the conclusions of an IOC-UNESCO / Government of Flanders project (2004-2010) implemented by Dr. V. The Cook Islands are 15 islands located in the Southwest Pacific (between 8-23°S latitude and 156-167°W longitude). The total land area is about 200 km2. However, because its islands are widely scattered, the EEZ of the Cooks encompass an area about 2 million km2. The Cook Islands government exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction over its EEZ according to international law and convention as a member state under UNCLOS1. Accordingly, the Cook Islands government exercises full control over resources in its EEZ, including minerals on the seabed. Decision making on allocating licences for exploration and ultimate mineral recovery is by the Cook Islands government and will be set out in relevant statutes. Seabed minerals investigations within the EEZ of the Cook Islands and adjacent waters were first carried out by, USSR, US, and New Zealand research vessels in the late 1960 early 1970?s and indicated the presence of high concentrations of manganese nodules. There is increasing recognition that in order for a development project to proceed successfully, it must first obtain a ?social licence to operate? from concerned stakeholders. Obtaining this ?licence? is in many ways a separate process to the legal one which involves, among other things, submitting an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) to the appropriate regulatory authority for review. Essentially, the function of an ESIA is to present a project?s technical, financial and social benefits, together with its environmental and social impacts in a transparent way to enable regulators to make an informed decision about whether the benefits outweigh the impacts, and thus whether or not the proposed project should proceed. The focus in the early days of ESIAs was primarily technical and was aimed to answer two fundamental questions: ?Can the project be built?? and ?Can we minimise impacts to a level that is acceptable to the community?? Basically, the ESIA process was a technical test of competence, but more recently, ESIAs have become much more than this. The main ESIA risk is now more akin to a test of a project?s legitimacy ? i.e., with more weight placed on the social licence, or the political test of moral authority ? with the process involving stakeholders from multiple backgrounds and disciplines, including some anti-development NGOs/civil society groups with their views on mining, (particularly in developing nations), often already pre-determined. Within the backdrop of this potential maelstrom, now enter a proposal for a new industry (such as deep sea mineral extraction).

Column flotation is a promising technique for processing as-mined, cobalt-rich, ferromanganese crust to separate the valuable crust component from barren substrate-rock, either aboard ship or within the water column. Column flotation testing was carried out in a seawater medium using samples obtained from the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the mid-Pacific Ocean near Johnston Atoll. The collector reagent was a mixture of diesel fuel, fatty acid, and sulfonate previously developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for crust flotation using conventional flotation cells. Results are dependent upon particle size and reagent dosage, especially *as these factors affect froth volume and stability. Column flotation results are compared with previous studies in conventional cells. An overview of how column flotation might be applied in an offshore mining and processing system is given.

An analysis of noble metals (NM) in natural samples is most problematic. Determination of their traces in geochemical samples, in part, for the purpose of deposit evaluation, is a difficult analytical task. A number of international standard reference materials of rocks and ores, in which NM content is certified, is estimated at a half dozen. For example, in the International proficiency test for analytical geochemistry laboratories (GeoPT), which is held by the Department of Earth Sciences (The Open University, United Kingdom), the data for gold and platinum are observed very rarely, and the results obtained in different laboratories differ on 1-3 orders of magnitude. It is caused by low contents of NM in nature, by a variety of their complex and mineral species, as well as by a complicated matrix composition of platinum-containing objects. Among these objects are ferromanganese ores, enriched strongly with Fe, Mn, Ni, REEs - the elements hampering a precise determination of NM due to a complexity of instrumental inter-element correction. The absence of the reliable methods of NM determination in these ores drastically limits the possibility of deposit evaluation.
