"Image analysis techniques are widely used for blast fragmentation measurement, and various commercial packages are available for this purpose. These packages are very versatile and serve as a useful tool for optimization of blasting practice. But many times, the results provided by image analysis techniques do not match with sieved and predicted data. This leads to the suggestion that understanding the limitations of this technology is as important as understanding its usefulness and versatility.A study was conducted in two stages:(a) Comparison between the results of image analysis and screened data using laboratory scale muck piles.(b) Comparison between predicted (Kuz-Ram) and measured (Image analysis) blast fragmentation results for several bench blasts.During laboratory work, muck piles with known size distributions were analyzed with the help of image analysis technique. A disparity was observed between the sieved and measured results because the image analysis techniques cannot accurately determine the % of fi nes in the muck. During fi eld work about fourteen blasts were monitored. It was observed that predicted (Kuz-Ram) results rarely matched with measured (Image analysis) results. The Kuz-Ram curves were modifi ed by changing the rock factor so that the Kuz-Ram and Image analysis curves match in the vicinity of the 50% passing size. The pairs of curves (modifi ed Kuz-Ram and Image analysis) were divided into three categories depending upon their differences in the coarse and fi nes ranges. The blast design parameters affecting the difference between the pair of curves have been outlined. The suggestions have been made to better utilize the image analysis system."

The application of Fourier spectral analysis to records of ground vibration generated by over 100 explosions from an open pit mine is used to develop empirical predictor equations that relate the response spectra to the blasting parameters used to generate the excitation motion. Time series representations of ground particle velocity are transformed into the frequency domain where the appropriate modifications are made such that the inverse Fourier transform yields the time series representation of particle displacement and acceleration. Compensations are made for the transform function of the recording system in the frequency domain. Spectral analysis of the three types of ground motion is correlated with the blasting parameters. The results show that the frequency content of ground vibrations generated from a mine blast can be quantified in terms of the predictor equations.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s in conjunction with other oil and gas well stimulation studies, personnel from the Dynamic Effects Lab performed model testing to demonstrate the effectiveness of utilizing an open section of borehole just before a plug. We called the process stem induced fracturing. The open section beneath the stem was used to increase the pressure magnitude and spread out the duration of the pressure pulse. This technique was later utilized to by Frank Chiapetta (1) in the fracture and fragmentation of rock in quarry blasting situations. He called his technique air deck blasting. In fact, Frank found that the Russians had previously discovered the same technique. There is currently interest in utilizing air deck blasting with an open section of hole beneath the explosive at the bottom of the bore hole to better remove the toe in a fragmentation shot. This paper reviews the development of stem induced fracturing and then describes a series of model tests conducted to measure borehole pressure at points along a borehole when an explosive charge is detonated at the midpoint of the borehole. Tests were conducted in both stiff boreholes (aluminum) and less rigid boreholes (PMMA-Plexiglas). Pressure time profiles were measured at the charge site, midway between the charge and the bottom of the hole, at the stemming at the top of the borehole, and at the bottom of the borehole. Crack initiation sites and crack propagation were also determined in the PMMA models. Some high speed pictures were taken of the event in the PMMA.

Blasting is the most effective and economical tool available to fragment and move rock for most applications. If properly executed, it can improve down-stream operations such as loading, hauling and crushing. It is not possible, however, to have full control over the energy released by the explosives when a poorly designed blast pattern is used. A poorly designed blast can produce serious damage to equipment and create a potentially hazardous condition to people. Advanced mining technology has been developed to address these potential hazards and optimize the blast pattern. This profiling technology can assist with blast planning and provide quick, precise data about the condition of the rock structure to be blasted. The 3G BlastMetrix system presented here uses three-dimensional (3D) stereo photogrammetry to model the rock mass in a fast, practical and safe manner. Through the image overlapping method, a 3D model is created with thousands of points that provide a significant amount of data regarding geology, geometry and topography conditions. The blasting plan can then be made in a way to optimize the rock fragmentation and avoid areas that could create flyrock. This paper is a case study concerning usage of stereo photogrammic surveying and borehole survey systems in a blasting operation at the Brazilian Quarry, Incopel. One 3D image of a drilled bench was generated using photogrammetry survey technology and the borehole survey data collected using the rodded Boretrak borehole survey system. Utilizing the minimum burden profile reports, explosive loading could be done accurately, resulting in an optimized blast with good heave and fragmentation as well as increased safety.

The era of non-electric systems as an initiating system has revolutionised the blasting world by introducing a very safe initiating system that is reliable, with initiation sequence possibilities that are superior to those of purely pyrotechnical or electric systems. Electronic initiation has brought with it accuracy, programming and controls that were lacking in the non-electric systems. However, it has also led to a certain degree of complexity, which works against user-friendliness, sometimes introducing a few constraints that are balancing out the intrinsic performance of electronic detonators. The introduction of a hybrid initiation system, Electronic and Non Electric, offers accuracy, and flexibility that were lacking in non-electric systems, whilst removing the inherent complexity of electronic systems. This paper endeavours to summarise the advantages and disadvantages of non-electric and electronic initiation systems that have been recorded after years of experience on site. The paper will then describe how a hybrid system only keeps the advantages whilst eradicating the disadvantages, via a case study.

This paper summarizes the course of mine blasting safety, particularly in underground coal mining, in the USA for over a century of mining operations. During the late 1800's and especially in the first decade of the 1900's, a large number of mine explosions occurred in which blasting played a significant role. A contributor to the large number of mine explosions during this time period was the use of black blasting powder to extract coal and other minerals. A review is made of some of the more significant underground coal mine explosions that resulted from blasting operations during this time period up to the present day. The safety measures that were adopted and required by a series of laws as a result of mine explosion disasters in which blasting was one of the factors are examined. The time line of historical improvements in blasting safety and the tremendous reduction in fatalities and injuries over a century is illustrated and discussed. The improvements, which included the elimination of black powder and dynamite and the introduction of safer explosives termed "permissibles" occurred slowly over time and culminated from the occurrence of many coal mine explosion disasters. The blasting accident history over the past decade is discussed to show the great gains made when compared to the first decade of the 1900's. The most recent blasting accident fatality that occurred in October 2006 at a U.S. underground coal mine is also discussed. Although the blasting accident record is significantly improved from over a century ago, continual improvement is needed to reach the goal of zero fatalities.

The Pinkerton Tunnel open cut project is part of the National Gateway Clearance Initiative improvement project to achieve a minimum of 21 feet of vertical clearance along CSX Transportation rail corridor so that double-stacked intermodal railcars can be transported between mid-Atlantic states and their ports to midwest markets in the U.S. This project involved drilling and blasting of 1.2 million bank cubic yards of rock over a 14 month period while maintaining rail traffic of two passenger and 38 freight trains daily. The environmental problems arising from ground vibration has been faced and discussed frequently in various industries such as quarry, mining, civil works, shaft, tunneling, pipe line and dam construction etc. where the blasting operations are unavoidable. In bench blast design, not only the technical and economical aspects, such as block size, uniformity and cost, but also the elimination of environmental problems resulting from ground vibration and air blast should be taken into consideration. The prediction of ground vibration components plays an important role in the minimization of the environmental complaints. This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in the quarries located on the different sides of Çatalca district in Turkey. In order to predict peak particle velocity level for this district, ground vibration components were measured for shots during bench blasting at these quarries. In blasting operations; ANFO is commonly used as blasting agent at the quarries. The type of priming and firing differed from quarry to quarry. The parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events by using different type vibration monitors. The absolute distances between shot points and monitor stations were determined by using GPS. The equation of square root scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity. In order to predict, and compare the influence grades to the neighboring buildings, and structures at the Çatalca district, the particle velocities and frequency values of all blast events are evaluated according to the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) and German DIN 4150 Norms due to the lack of a national standard in Turkey. Then, the data pairs belonging to these quarries were gathered together to represent the district and were analyzed statistically. At the end of statistical evaluation of the data pairs, an empirical relation which gives average line at 95% confidence level and upper bound 95% prediction line with a reasonable correlation coefficient was established between peak particle velocity and scaled distance

As someone who has enjoyed photography as a hobby for many years, aerial photography to me has always been an exciting way to give a different perspective to my images. Our industry is always in search of new technology for bet­ter and more cost effective methods to improve our trade and aerial photography is a great tool to improve project planning or document its progress. It has typically involved conventional aircraft both fixed wing and helicopters but neither method is always available or cost effective. The lat­est innovation since digital imaging is the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones. But there is a lot of uncertainty with this amazing new technology’s fu­ture in the U.S. as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is under review and development of UAV regulations for commercial use which are slated to be completed in 2015.

The Carajás Iron Mine, recognized as the largest iron ore province in the world, is notable for its continuous efforts to improve operational efficiency and safety. In response to these objectives, a QA/QC (Quality Assurance and Quality Control) Program was implemented and integrated with Blastscout Probe technology to optimize drilling and blasting processes. The program supports the standardization of operational parameters, the execution of regular audits, and real-time data analysis, facilitating precise and timely adjustments. The implementation led to significant improvements, including an 80% increase in operational compliance, a 49% reduction in drilling depth deviations, and a 30% enhancement in Jaspelite fragmentation. This study presents the methodology employed, the outcomes obtained, and the positive impacts observed in both operational performance and environmental management.

Blasting operations took place on Channel coast NW of France to extend Flamanville Nuclear Power Plant (EPR new generation). The closest operating reactor building was monitored by a 24 remote vibrations transducers network to fulfil, on one hand, the severe environment constraints and satisfy high degree of productivity required by the project, on the other hand. Although these requirements usually are incompatible, this challenge compelled to introduce a seismic modelling technique to optimize blast designs using electronic initiating system. The “Hybrid Seismic Modelling” (MSH) uses blastholes signatures (seismic vibrations records) which are greatly dependent on geology and alteration of rock mass, explosives, charge geometry, blast configuration, and the final excavation shape. In order to respect severe vibrations limits, excavation layout was divided into areas with specific blasting modules - type and number of charges, single charge, initiating sequence. Thanks to this technique, it has been possible to reach lowest blasts vibrations levels and a better productivity compared to classical blasting operation at the same location in the past. After the modelling method presentation - principle and use precautions, technical improvements are reported.

In a time when data has become a highly valued commodity within many mining and quarry operations, managing large amounts of current and historical information can be difficult. If not managed properly, trying to leverage the data to make informed operational decisions promotes another challenge. Geographic Information System (GIS) is an environment that uses computers and software to create, manage, analyze, and map all types of data. Currently, the mining industry is faced with a challenge to produce the demanded critical metals and minerals that drive our economies. GIS is leveraged in many large mining industries today to help drive decisions, save cost and plan for future operations. Specifically in the Drilling, Blasting and Quarrying industries, data is being captured at many different levels, whether it is a subsurface geological, blast performance, quarry surveys, loading and hauling, or crushing performance. Pen and paper logs and reports compiled lack the dimension that GIS can bring for extracting value from real-time or historical data. GIS connects data to maps, integrating location data with all types of descriptive information. Paired with Artificial Intelligence, additional analytical layers can be built on platforms to extract data and automate workflows. Having the ability to encompass several forms of collected data to drive operational decisions can bring huge savings to the bottom-line. This paper will dive into the areas where GIS data can drive value into operations by assisting in the management and analysis of the types of data being captured, specifically with Drill and Blast. Whether it is tracking haul road conditions, monitoring locations of equipment, environmental conditions, quantifying blast performance or developing a quarry plan based on geological models. GIS can collectively encompass all of this data to bring tremendous value to the operations, improving safety, efficiency and production.
