The Bureau of Mines has calculated general time-dependent solutions for radon diffusion from cylindrical and slab rock samples containing uniform radium distribution. Results have been obtained for several sets of boundary conditions. The method is suitable for determining the effective diffusion coefficient and the effective porosity for radon.

This Bureau of Mines report and its companion report (Information Circular 9074) have been prepared as a complete reference on underground coal mine lighting. This report discusses the fundamentals of light and its interrelationship with the visual process. The purpose of the report is to insure an understanding of the numerous complex and interrelated factors that must be considered to design and implement a mine lighting system that will satisfy human needs for good vision and comfort. Topics include history, objectives, and technical considerations of coal mine lighting; light physics; light and vision relationships; and disability and discomfort glare.

This summary appears in Minerals Year- book volumes I-II, and III, which cover mineral production in the United States, its island possessions, the Canal Zone, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as the principal minerals imported into and exported from the United States. The sections of this chapter and the area chapters in volume III contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

To a greater or lesser extent, the economies of the smaller Caribbean Island countries continued to have common problems. These included unemployment, inflation, foreign exchange shortages, trade deficits, and unstable world prices for their exports. Declining prices for petroleum provided some relief from scarce foreign exchange. Overall, the mineral sector remained stable. The Amerada Hess Corp. crude oil transshipment terminal on St. Lucia was completed during 1981. However, there were no shipments during the year. No official reason was offered for the delay in opening the terminal, but it may have been related to the world surplus of crude oil that occurred in 1981. There has been no further action on the refinery, which was to complete the island's petroleum complex. During the first half of 1981, an announcement was made that a second oil transshipment terminal would be built on St. Lucia. The report indicated that the terminal was to be financed by Saudi Arabia and include underground storage. After the original announcement, no further information was made available. This terminal, like the Hess petroleum complex, may have been temporarily postponed because of the crude oil surplus.

This report gives general expressions for evaluating various thermo-dynamic properties applicable to a two-component system, including liquid-vapor equilibria. In addition, expressions are developed for some of the quantities useful in making thermodynamic consistency checks on phase equilibria data. These formulas were developed from the general principles of thermodynamics and are expressed in terms of the compressibility factor, which is assumed to be an explicit function of the molal density, the absolute thermodynamic temperature, and the composition.

This chapter summarizes data on crude mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. Except for the mineral fuel commodities, the detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. In October 1977, responsibility for the collection of data on mineral fuels-coal, petroleum, natural gas, and natural gas liquids-was transferred to the newly created Department of Energy. Although chapters covering these commodities will no longer appear in Volume I of the Minerals Yearbook, quantity and value data have been included in most of these summary tables to maintain statistical consistency in State and national value of overall crude mineral output. This shift in responsibility has also resulted in changes to the composition of the "Nonmetals? and "Mineral Fuels" groups in table 1 and table 2. The commodities-asphalt and related bitumens (natural), carbon dioxide (natural), helium, and peat-have been removed from the ?Mineral Fuels" group, and are now included under the "Nonmetals" group. There has been no change in the components of the "Metals" group.

Introduction A wealth of information exists which deals with electrical grounding, both from a general viewpoint and from a specifically mine-oriented approach. Many parameters must be investigated in order to thoroughly cover all of the variables which govern the performance of electrical grounding systems. The emphasis of this work on open-pit practices re- presents a new development in the field of grounding research, and an exhaustive review of the relevant historical documentation is especially desirable. Grounding System Purposes What purposes are served by a grounding system? The answer is four-fold and may be summarized as follows. First, it must limit potential gradients between conducting materials in a given area (56). When a phase conductor comes into contact with a machine frame, current flows through the equipment, which tends to become elevated above ground by an amount equal to the voltage on the conductor. If a man were to touch the machine while he was simultaneously connected to ground in some manner, his body would also tend to become elevated in potential, possibly to a lethal extent. Thus, the grounding system should provide a low- resistance path for the fault current to return to the source. The maxi- mum potential to which a man could be exposed when touching a machine frame is equal to the voltage drop along the ground conductors inside the power cable, as shown in Figure 1 (54). All the coal lands in Alaska are publicly owned, and the Federal Government is the principal consumer of coal. Therefore the Government has long been concerned with the wise utilization of the coal reserves of Alaska as well as with the availability of coals meeting the specifications for use in various Government installations. Coal preparation plays a key role in both of these areas of interest. The proper choice and operation of coal-washing equipment permits the mining of inferior deposits, minimizes waste of coal in preparation, and assures a prepared product of the best quality obtainable from the raw coal. Thus, from time to time, the Bureau of Mines has made washability examinations on most of the coals mined in Alaska. Generally, these examinations were made when new mines or new beds were opened, when construction of new preparation plants was being considered, or when the operation of existing plants could be improved by better knowledge of the raw coal. The purpose of this report is to bring together all the washability data available on the coals of the Matanuska Valley and Beluga River fields. The pattern of energy development for the rapidly growing Anchorage area is not clear at this time. Formerly coal was the only fuel available for large-scale space heating and power generation. More recently both oil and natural gas have entered the market, and several hydroelectric projects have been completed. Additional major hydroelectric projects are being considered. The role that will be played by coal in this competitive energy market is uncertain. However I if coal is the fuel used in future power plants or industrial installations, the information contained in this report will be useful in indicating the quality of the coals that can be supplied and in selecting proper preparation techniques.

Natural gas was Bangladesh's only significant exploited mineral. A few other minerals or mineral-based commodities were produced for local consumption. The most valuable were nitrogen fertilizer, salt, cement, and clay for brick.2 The most important mineral industry development of 1987 was the start of modest production of crude oil, the first discovered and produced in the country. PRODUCTION AND TIADE Production of natural gas from the nation's huge reserves continued to increase but was limited by the lack of residential and industrial demand. Gas reserves of 7 trillion to 16 trillion cubic feet were sufficient for far more production than the country could efficiently utilize for many years. The country's consumption-to-reserves ratio was one of the lowest of the developing nations. Mineral exports have been insignificant, comprising a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogenous fertilizer exports could become important when planned new capacity comes on-stream. Mineral imports were dominated by crude petroleum.

Drilling with water has the potential to significantly reduce the respirable dust concentrations generated from small-diameter rotary drills when drilling blastholes on surface mining operations. However, water adverseky affects tri- cone drill bits commonly used in surface drilling operations, causing excessive wear and premature replacement. Consequently, dry drilling with a dust collector system has the most widespread use in the industry. Tests have been conducted by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) on a newly designed device for smaller diameter drills that separates the water from the bailing air before it reaches the bit and thus provides the cost benefit of dry drilling while providing the benefit of wet drilling for dust suppression. The water that is delivered to the hole with the bailing air is separated from the air by a proprietary mechanical device that is encased in a drill sub (short section of drill rod/pipe) located immediately behind the cutting bit. A cascade cyclone and a real-time dust monitor were used to sample dust emissions from the holes. Dust concentrations and silica content were measured when drilling dry versus drilling wet. The tests show that drilling with this water separating sub can reduce both measured dust emissions from the boreholes and visible dust around the drill rig.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the research, development, and evaluation demonstrations conducted by the Bureau of Mines under the Health and Safety Act of 1969 to improve the means of notifying miners underground, who are away from their own phone, that they are being called.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of platinum from known major deposits in market economy countries. Fifteen of these deposits contain demonstrated resources totaling 302 million troy ounces of platinum. Detailed geologic, engineering, and cost evaluations were performed on each deposit to determine its potential for platinum production. There are large amounts of demonstrated platinum potentially available from market economy deposits that were not analyzed owing to lack of adequate data or to technological limitations. These include 297 million troy ounces contained in the UG2 and Platreef of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. This analysis indicates that about 11 0 million troy ounces (2.3 million ounces annually) of platinum are potentially available at the January 1980 producer price of $420 per troy ounce, nearly all from South Africa. An additional 85 million troy ounces occurring in Zimbabwean deposits would become available only through more than a quadrupling of that price. In order to meet projected world demand of 3.5 million troy ounces in 1990, platinum price may have to increase. Only one domestic deposit, the Salmon River in Alaska, is capable of producing platinum at $420 per troy ounce. Regardless of price, at assumed production capacities, domestic deposits could supply less than 10 percent of annual U.S. requirements.

"INTRODUCTION Wood burned for commercial heat and power usually is waste material from some manufacturing process. The amount of it reaches substantial proportions. It is estimated that over 50 percent of the timber cut for lumber becomes ""waste"" in the process - sawdust, shavings, trimmings, slabs, and bark. Woodworking manufacturing processes also produce much waste. The incentive to use this waste has resulted in much development of wood-burning equipment to produce heat and power. To answer general inquiries received by the Bureau, this publication covering developments along these lines was written. Moisture is essentially always associated with wood. Green wood contains approximately 30 to 50 percent moisture; air-dried or seasoned wood contains 15 to 25 percent and kiln-dried about 8 percent. Exposed to the weather, wood absorbs and gives off moisture depending on weather conditions and water contact.""Dry"" wood ignites relatively quickly and readily gives off volatile matter when heated. Long flames and smoke easily occur during burning. The burning action is substantially retarded, however, by appreciable moisture content; ignition is more difficult. When the moisture content is more than about 70 percent, an auxiliary fuel is required to maintain combustion. One of the main factors in the problem of the satisfactory and smokeless combustion of wood is its moisture content."

"Agglomeration processes and agglomerate characteristics are largely controlled by the forces of interaction between particles. The nature and typical magnitude of these interaction forces are evaluated relative to the external forces commonly present in agglomeration systems. The specific roles of the interaction forces in the various stages of agglomerate formation and growth and their effects on the integrity and mechanical strength of agglomerates are briefly reviewed. Because the interaction forces affect different aspects of agglomerate development in different ways, conflicting requirements can arise. Examples of such conflicts are given and used to demonstrate the importance of evaluating the effects of interaction forces etc., in the context of the overall agglomeration process and its ultimate objectives.INTRODUCTIONThe term agglomeration is generally used to refer to processes whereby discrete particles are caused, or allowed, to associate into clumps in which the individual particles retain their identity but are held together by relatively weak, usually physical forces. Various other designations are given to these processes, depending on the specific circumstances under which agglomeration occurs. The terms balling and pelletizing are often used to describe agglomeration in dry or semi-dry powders; coagulation and flocculation are used to refer to agglomeration of particles dispersed in fluids. Common to all of these cases is the fact that the formation, growth and integrity of the agglomerates depend primarily on the forces acting on and between particles. The same forces are, of course, responsible for manyaspects of the behavior of colloidal systems and their study and evaluation constitute the,basis for colloid and interface science.FORCES ACTING ON FINE PARTICLES AND AGGLOMERATES It is convenient to classify the forces acting on and between particles into two general types: external forces and interaction forces. It should he recognized, however, that a sharp distinction is not always possible.External Forces Gravity and inertial forces act on all particles and their magnitude is proportional to particle mass, i.e. they vary with the cube of particle size. Such forces are oftensignificant for large agglomerates but may be negligible for individual, fine particles.Hydrodynamic (""drag"") forces are important, for particles suspended in fluids. For very small particles, the drag force is directly proportional to size (Stokes' Law) while for very large particles or agglomerates it varies with approximately the square of size (Newton's Law). A useful procedure for estimating drag forces over a broad range of particle sizes and physical conditions has been given by Concha (1)."

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the application of a spark-source mass spectrograph equipped with a spinning-electrode system for the study of various high-molecular-weight materials derived from coal. Conclusions from the investigation of anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, coronene, truxene, a coal-tar pitch (800 to 850 C softening point), and anthracene-chrysene synthetic mixtures follow: 1. Simplified mass spectra of anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, coronene, and truxene, from which the molecular weights were easily determined, were obtained by the spinning-electrode system. 2. Eight structural types having molecular weights from 178 to 252 corresponding to compounds previously observed in an electron impact mass spectrum of a coal-tar pitch sample were affirmed by this technique. 3. Mass spectra obtained from synthetic mixtures of anthracene and chrysene demonstrated that the technique is applicable for semiquantitative analysis.

Early research on coal dust explosions by the Federal Bureau of Mines and in other countries is reviewed to examine the effect of a single inhibitor, rock dust, on the explosion limits of coal dust. The parameters studied in this research included coal dust fineness, volatile content, and type of initiation. This research resulted in appropriate safety regulations in the respective countries. Also reported are the results of recent research in the Experimental Mine of the Bureau of Mines to investigate in detail the limits of coal dust explosions; the research used three types of coal with rock dust added as the independent variable. New experimental techniques and new criteria for defining propagation/nonpropagation were applied to the experiments. Also, a limit explosion propagation model is proposed based on the assumption of rapid devolatilization of the coal particles, with the subsequent combustion of the evolved volatile products contributing primarily to the propagation of the explosions. The model assumes also that the resultant char acts mainly as an inert diluent similar to the rock dust. The model also suggests that the function of stronger initiation is mostly to lift more dust from the mine surfaces.

Sulfur content data from Bureau of Mines routine analyses of 1,060 United States crude oils were used with crude oil production data for the years 1956-66 to prepare tables and charts that illustrate the volume and percentage distribution according to sulfur content of crude oil produced in 10 geographical areas of the United States. Similar relationships for foreign crude oils based on analyses of 201 crude oils and production during 1966 are illustrated for Africa, Canada, Middle East, and South America. Tables are included giving field name, sulfur content, geologic name and age of producing formation, depth of producing formation, and production during 1966 for 882 United States crude oils and 201 .foreign crude oils. Between 1955 and 1966 the average sulfur content of crude oils produced in the United States decreased from 0.73 to 0.67 percent.

Massive roof overlying the working seam in longwall operations can cause hazards if it does not cave readily behind the face supports. The overhang thus formed can overload the supports and endanger personnel when it collapses suddenly as a large rock mass. This Bureau of Mines report proposes the use of a concentrated load, either strip or point loading, applied onto the roof with the help of the upward thrust of the face supports. An experiment was conducted in the laboratory to obtain information about break characteristics and the values of significant parameters of three sedimentary rocks. The results were used to determine the breaking load requirement for a strong roof possibly encountered in typical longwall operations. The results show that the roof slab of moderate thickness can be fractured within the load capacity of off-the-shelf powered supports.

Areal distributions for ash, total sulfur, and sulfur forms were developed for the top 12 inches, the middle section, the bottom 8 inches, and the total seam of Pittsburgh coal in southwestern Pennsylvania. The sulfur and ash exhibit an apparent high local variability. As a general rule, both the sulfur and ash show high concentrations in the top 12 inches and in the bottom 8 inches of the seam relative to the concentrations observed in the middle section of the seam. The high-low sulfur and ash concentrations in the top 12 inches of the seam are not coincident with the high-low sulfur and ash concentrations in either the middle section or the bottom 8 inches of the seam. With respect to sulfur and ash, it is suggested that the top and bottom sections of the Pittsburgh coal may reflect both a syngenetic and epigenetic origin. Present data support the belief that paleotopography controlled Pittsburgh seam deposition. Evidence is presented to show that channels were cut at various times into the semilithified sediments that buried the Pittsburgh seam. In this channeling process, portions of the Pittsburgh coal may have been eroded away. Following channel development, the lower part of the Pittsburgh sandstone filled the complex system of braided channels to produce the "want areas" encountered in present mining operations. In localized areas of the Pittsburgh seam, impingement of Pittsburgh sandstone may be responsible for the lateral displacement of the coal. Information of this type becomes important in the assessment of exploration data, in the development of a quality control system for mine output, and in mine life planning.

Data from experiments and literature on gas and dust explosions in closed vessels are presented to show the effects of the vessel size and shape; the initial pressure, temperature, and turbulence; and the fuel-air ratio and the strength of ignition source on pressure and rate of pressure rise. An attempt is made to correlate some of these parameters with an elementary mathematical model. Analyses of data on 17 vessels--spherical, cubical, cylindrical, and rectilinear in shape--ranging from 0,018 to 905 cubic feet in volume were made. Although the study was initiated to provide information primarily on dust-explosion phenomena, some data were obtained for gas explosions so that the factor of initial turbulence caused by the pneumatic blast used to disperse dust could be evaluated. The mathematical interpretation of the explosion phenomena was in general accord with the experimental data, and correlation was obtained for several factors affecting explosion development. Neither vessel size nor shape affected maximum pressure (when heat loss was neglected). The rate of pres-sure rise decreased as vessel size increased, and the rate was proportional to the ratio of the surface area of the vessel to its volume. Induced initial turbulence markedly increased the rate of pressure rise and slightly increased the maximum pressure. Changes in initial pressure produced proportional changes in maximum pressure and rate of pressure rise. Initial temperature and maximum pressure were inversely related, but initial temperature had little effect on the maximum rate of pressure rise. Comparative experiments showed no appreciable difference in explosion development of gas and dust fuels. The vessels and experimental work are described, and all data are given in tables. The mathematical model will facilitate extrapolation from laboratory to industrial conditions and will allow comparison of results obtained in different laboratories.
