Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation is a zinc-lead mine located in southern of Namibia. It is currently considering the development of a low grade ore body containing about 2.8% zinc. This ore can be utilised by the concentrator if it could be upgraded prior to the ball mill. Preliminary work indicated that the ore may be upgraded in a pre-beneficiating stage by using dense medium separation, X-ray sorting or a combination thereof to a feed grade of minimum 9% zinc. This paper describes the process followed in evaluating the technologies for pre-beneficiation. The results from test work indicated that the low grade ore is amenable to pre-beneficiation by both dense medium separation and X-ray sorting. A comparison between the two technologies showed that dense medium separation marginally outperformed X-ray sorting on grade and recovery. The results for the X-ray sorting were achieved by tuning the calibration curve specifically for the samples tested.

Contract is a PC-based software program designed to satisfy the main features that have been identified to be lacking from cost estimation systems currently in place in the Australian coal industry. Contract was developed in conjunction with an Australian contracting company to refine the existing core structure used by the company for project evaluation. The key feature of Contract is the availability of analysis functions to explore multiple options within a contract project by altering identified variables. The ability to update project files has been incorporated into Contract to ensure that it is user-friendly and relatively simple to use. Lists of mining equipment and consumables are stored in MS ACCESS database files, along with the supplier details for each item. Each time a project is initiated there is a dynamic link to the database files and the most recent current information is retrieved and linked with the project. Contract provides an option to calculate the changes in metre unit cost as a function of the average development cost. Keywords: Contracting, cost estimation, sensitivity analysis.

The indirect estimation of intact rock properties is particularly useful for preliminary investigations in engineering projects. In this paper we examine the usability of electrical resistivity, a nondestructive measurement, for the prediction of physical and mechanical rock characteristics. Physico-mechanical tests (uniaxial compression, Brazilian tensile, density, and porosity tests) and electrical resistivity measurements were performed on specimens of 36 rock types. Before the resistivity tests, the specimens were completely saturated with saline solution. Evaluation of the test results showed that there are medium or strong correlations between resistivity and rock properties. There are also strong or stronger correlations between the two parameters for the rock classes. The regression equations developed were statistically tested, and their validity was confirmed. The results were also compared with previous studies. The conclusion is that electrical resistivity measurement can be used for reliably estimating physical and mechanical rock characteristics.

The concentrations of selected trace elements (As, Cd, Hg, and Pb in run-of-mine (ROM) coal, discard, and coal product were investigated to assess the efficiency of beneficiation in reducing trace element concentrations and ascertain any implications regarding environmental compliance to regulatory frameworks. Samples were collected from a colliery in Mpumalanga Province twice a month for a period of 24 months. The samples were ashed to approximately 0.21 mm, then digested in a mixture of 70% HNO3 and 40% HF and analysed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Except for Pb, the mean concentration of all elements decreased from the ROM stage to the coal product stage. The order in which trace elements occurred from the highest to lowest throughout the production chain was Pb>As>Hg>Cd. With the exception of Cd, the mean trace element concentrations in the discard were above the total concentration threshold (TCT) set for landfill disposal. The As, Hg, and Cd concentrations in the product were well below the thresholds for all land uses. However, Pb concentrations in the product coal were above legal limits, which is of concern with regard to environmental compliance and the performance and marketability of the product.

The time 06h30 in midwinter is a little early to set out on an excursion from Johannesburg. Yet this was the hour that members, many accompanied by their wives, started to assemble in the parking lot adjacent to the squash courts at the Wanderers Club, Illovo, for a visit to Premier Diamond Mine at Cullinan. All fifty were checked in and aboard the coach by 07hOO. Coffee and sandwiches, served en route by Doris Gardner and Pam Binstead, were most welcome. The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions. An oolitic iron ore from Gara Djebilet, Algeria was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrosopy and the phosphorus distribution between various phases studied. Two ore types were identified – a haematite-dominated, oolitic type and a more massive, magnetite-dominated type. The haematite-dominated ore had a higher phosphorus content, up to 0.6% in the iron oxide minerals, than the magnetite-dominated type (0.3% P). Owing to the very fine-grained texture of the gangue minerals, reducing the phosphorus content to levels suitable for steelmaking (below 0.05% P) by conventiobal means would entail an energyintensive process with a high carbon footprint. Preliminary leaching test work using a sulphurous geothermal water as lixiviant, assisted by solar thermal acceleration, gave very promising results, removing 0.13% of the residual P (or 21.7% removal of total P) from the high-phosphorus oolitic ore.

"This article is devoted to the introduction of a new technique of electrical resistivity data processing called residual resistivity (RR). We define RR as measured resistivity minus background resistivity. To determine the background resistivity, the data acquired from electrical resistivity measurements along a given survey line is evaluated, and then an equation is fitted to the data corresponding to a chosen measurement station as a function of current electrode spacing (or array length). The RR technique was applied to several synthetic models to compare the conventional resistivity inversion of each model with its RR-based inversion. A case study was carried out in a karstic area in Zarrinabad, Lorestan Province, western Iran, to detect the location and geometry of probable cavities by conventional resistivity inversion and RR-based inversion. The results showed that the anomalous zones are better highlighted in the RR-based inversion images in comparison with the conventional inversion images. In some cases, anomalies detected by the RR-based images were hidden in the conventional method. IntroductionThe geoelectrical resistivity method has been widely used since the early 20th century, and plays an important role in several fields such as groundwater and subsurface mineral exploration, geotechnical and environmental investigations, and archeological studies (Bayrak and Senel, 2012; Candansayar and Basokur, 2001; Fehdi et al., 2011; Hee et al., 2010; Osella et al., 2003; Wilkinson et al., 2010). The goal of geoelectrical resistivity surveys is to determine the distribution of subsurface resistivity by measuring the current-potential difference on the ground surface (Aizebeokhai et al., 2010). In the electrical resistivity method, an electrical current is injected into the ground by two electrodes, called current electrodes (AB), and the potential difference is measured between another pair of electrodes, the potential electrodes (MN). Several methods of interpretation are available for application to electrical resistivity data, the simplest being the graphical interpretation of the apparent electrical resistivity pseudo-sections along each survey line. A second method, electrical resistivity inversion, has been developed to create relatively accurate two- and threedimensional computational resistivity models of subsurface sections (Loke and Barker, 1996; Niwas and Mehrotra, 1997; Nordiana et al., 2014; Oldenburg and Li, 1994; Papadopoulos et al., 2009; Yilmaz and Narman, 2014). In the inversion method, models of subsurface objectives are mathematically inverted to reach optimal solutions subject to prescribed objective functions, constrains, and convergence criteria. A common problem when using the electrical resistivity inversion method is that the inversion model of an electrical resistivity profile may be non-unique because different inhomogeneities in the investigation media can result in the same electrical response (Smith and Vozzof, 1984)."

"The coal strength parameter is used in operations such as the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing/grinding equipment. However, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason a method for the indirect determination of coal strength from easy tests would be useful. In this study, the predictability of coal strength from the needle penetration test was investigated. This is a very easy and practical test method. Point load and needle penetration index (NPI) tests were carried out on coal specimens from Çayirhan coalfield in Turkey. The point load indexes were converted to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values by using the general conversion factor. The UCS and NPI values were evaluated using regression analysis. A strong linear relationship was found between the two parameters. The conversion factor for the UCS-NPI ratio is 0.35 for the tested coal samples. It is concluded that the UCS of coal can be predicted from the NPI.IntroductionKnowledge of coal strength is important for the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing and grinding equipment. Open stoping has become a popular mining method in hard rock mines, not only due to the safety of the method as a non-entry approach, but also because of the high extraction rate and low costs. At mine sites, stope performance is evaluated by calculating stope overbreak using the stability chart. However, limitations of the stability chart regarding the precision of the predictions, nonconsideration of factors such as the influence of blasting, and the exclusion of underbreak have led to non-optimal designs. The capabilities of today's computers have increased the amount of data being collected and the power of models being built. This article presents a step towards a new stope design approach where stope overbreak and underbreak are measured and georeferenced using octrees at an approximately cubic metre resolution and predicted using multivariate statistical models (partial least square, linear discriminant analysis, and random forest). Results show that overbreak and underbreak location along the design surface and their magnitude are predicted with good precision using a random forest model. These predictions are used to build the expected geometry of the open stope. The resolution of the data and the use of multivariate analysis has enabled the prediction of variation in stope performance along the design surface, going well beyond the simple qualitative per stope face prediction provided by a traditional stability chart approach.

A spiral concentrator is a density separation device used for the beneficiation of coal and various minerals such as iron ore, chromite ore, gold, beach sand minerals etc. The flow pattern developed in the equipment is complex and unique, yet the operation is very simple, with low capital and operating expenditure. Spirals are applied for beneficiation of material in the size range finer than 2 mm and are capable of recovering heavy minerals as fine as .01 mm. The understanding of the unique flow pattern has kept researchers engaged over the last few decades and attempts are being made to explain such flow patterns so that they can be controlled and modified to improve the operating efficiency, Ep (Ecart Probable Error, also known as probable error in separation) and acceptability of spiral concentrators for processing of fines and slimes - currently being discarded and dumped in the tailing ponds. An attempt has been made in this paper to explain the generation of complex flow patterns with application to classical solid mechanics in the fluid and slurry system. The same has been used to explain the selective separation of particles in different zones in a cross-section on the spiral trough. The paper also discusses the application of a force balance model to explain the generation of secondary circulation. Due to the presence of laminar and turbulent flow regimes in the spiral concentrator, varieties of equations have been proposed in the literature, consisting of different equations for different zones. An attempt has been made to present a unified flow equation for calculation of flow velocity at different positions on the spiral trough. The thermodynamic properties for the CaO-CaF2and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using Born-Mayer-Huggins type pair potential. The parameters of interatomic potential were obtained by fitting the thermodynamics properties of CaO, CaF2and BaO with the experimental data. The phase diagrams for the CaO-CaF2 and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by the thermodynamic properties obtained by MD simulation. The eutectic composition and temperature of the CaO-CaF2system calculated by MD simulation were about 28 mole per cent CaO and 1575K, respectively. The calculated eutectic point agrees very well with experimental data, which are about 22 mole per cent CaO and 1633K, respectively. The conditions of a stability of metallurgical films on a surface of solid on the basis of classical regularities of a thermodynamics are considered. For specific conditions of metallurgical processes the basic equations relevant to non-metallic inclusions (product of steel killing) migration and transfer through the interface boundary of metal-slag are obtained. The basic criteria equations of conditions of stability of metallurgical dispersed systems are developed in view of films formation. The probable thermodynamics reason of wetting due to formation of stable films are discussed. The experimental measurement of thin and thick films elastic resistance for metallurgical systems are carried out and the results are discussed. The presence of a wetting thick film increases stability of dispersed systems (facilitates an inverse implication of non-metallic inclusion in a melt) due to a barrier effect of wetting films. The quantitative evaluations of non-metal inclusion stability for steel in contact with any metallurgical slag are carried out. The results are in accordance with technological experience. The construction of the Guaigui Multipurpose Project includes a 74 metre high concrete face rock fill dam, a 350 metre long diversion tunnel and a 350 metre long spillway tunnel. The topography in the project area is very steep, and the rock masses are characterized as soft rocks. The stability of the 80 to 100 metre high dam abutments and the excavation of the tunnels in soft rock conditions have caused various challenges and problems to be solved. Limited pre-investigations have called to a great extent for estimation of parameters for the stability calculations based on experience. The preliminary calculation of the stability of the planned rock slope above the spillway intake platform has been carried out by conventional partial factor methods and by use of a computed based Slide Program. The two methods of calculation give different results , and that rock support is necessary to obtain an acceptable factor of safety for a slope inclination of 52o. The input parameters for the rock mass characteristics need to be verified for the permanent calculations.

"Underground coal gasification (UCG) is an unconventional mining method that converts coal in situ into a fuel gas that can be used for electricity generation. Residue products from UCG have the potential to leach into surrounding groundwaters. The geochemistry and leaching dynamics of these products are explored in this study. The products include char, ash, and the heat-affected zone in the surrounding rocks. Core samples from the pilot plant at Majuba are the first ever to be recovered from a UCG cavity in Africa, and they give key insights into the geochemistry of the gasification zone. Mineralogical and chemical analyses were performed on the samples, and acid-base accounting (ABA) was used to predict the acid-producing capacity of the gasification zone, particularly for char samples. Some of the char contained pyrite, although not all samples were acid-producing as determined by the ABA analysis. The ABA results showed that some of the unburned coal has moderate levels of sulphur, which could be the driving medium for acidic conditions. The ABA analysis indicated that water in contact with the gasification zone would eventually have a pH lower than 7, which could lead to acid rock drainage. These results form part of a preliminary investigation into the geochemistry of the reaction zone, post gasification. IntroductionUnderground coal gasification (UCG) is an unconventional mining method that converts coal in situ into a fuel gas that can be used for industrial purposes, including electricity generation. The gasification process leads to the formation of a cavity composed of char, rubble, and void space (Bhutto, Bazmi, and Zahedi, 2013). Residue products from UCG have the potential to leach into groundwater. These products include char (devolatilized coal), which can generate acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is caused by the oxidation of sulphide minerals, which acidifies the leachate, thus increasing the solubility of some environmentally toxic metals (As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn, etc.) (Bouzahzah et al., 2015).The main source of ARD is oxidation of sulphide-bearing minerals due to interactions with oxygen, water, and microorganisms (Simate and Ndlovu, 2014; Kefeni, Msagati, and Mamba, 2017; Bouzahzah et al., 2015). Although ARD occurs naturally, it can be enhanced by mining activities that escalate exposure of sulphide minerals to water, air, and bacteria (Simate and Ndlovu, 2014). At the Majuba pilot plant, the unburned coal remaining in the cavity has been in contact with groundwater since the gasifier was shut down in 2013. It is possible that in a commercial UCG plant, most of the coal will be consumed and no unburnt coal will be left in the cavity. Most of the sulphur will be converted to H2S during the gasification process and transported with the syngas to surface, where it can be removed and captured as elemental sulphur."

Dr Stander, Director of the National Institute for Water Research, gave an interesting talk, illustrated with slides and a short film, on the conservation and reclamation of water in South Africa. After question time, Mr Hector, Witbank Town Engineer (visitor) thanked Dr Stander. The meeting closed at 7.10 p.m.

Geometallurgy represents an integrated approach to mine planning and operation whereby the naturally occurring ore variability and its effects on all key downstream activities in the mine life cycle are considered. Process mineralogy is one of the key components of this integrated approach. This paper focuses on understanding some of the mineralogical variability across the Swartberg Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide ore in South Africa and its consequent effects on flotation performance. This process mineralogy project is motivated by the planned changeover and expansion of the Black Mountain Mines concentrator to process solely Swartberg ore compared to the run-of-mine blend currently being treated at the plant. Eight samples spanning the main lithological units of the ore body are described using quantitative mineral-textural data and bulk sulfide batch flotation performance to establish five process mineralogical or geometallurgical units comprising: quartz-pyroxmangite-magnetite, quartz-amphibolemagnetite, quartz-magnetite, garnet-magnetite-quartzite and mica-quartzite ores. Important mineralogical characteristics affecting Cu, Pb and Zn recovery, grade and selectivity specific to the different ore samples are discussed. Ultimately, the use of ore-specific process mineralogical and geometallurgical knowledge allows for better mine planning and plant optimisation. Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties as well as the behaviour of the mould fluxes during melting, important in order to improve continuous casting operations. Lubrication and control of heat transfer in the mould are the more relevant functions of these materials. Values of physical properties like viscosity and surface tension at melting range temperatures are required, as much as the thermal behaviour under process conditions. The heat extraction from the liquid steel has an important effect in the final quality of products. Mould fluxes are constituted by different oxides, and may form glasses and crystal phases during cooling. The solidification rate and the chemical composition determine the proportion, type and crystalline morphology, which are responsible of the thermal transfer processes. In this paper, viscosity values are reported in the melting range temperatures calculated by means of the Riboud model and compared with fluidity results obtained by the inclined plane technique. Also the linear expansion of the mould fluxes at high temperatures was determined by dilatometry. The crystallization in two different fluxes was determined by DTA tests and correlated with the basicity index. Crystal phases were evaluated by scanning electronic microscopy on quenched samples at 1300°C. This information is relevant to increase the knowledge on the peritectic steel grades casting process in order to improve its quality. One of the important facets of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is its service to its members. One way of achieving this objective is by pursuing an active branch structure. In this Spotlight, Richard Beck, Holder of the Regional Development Portfolio, gives the aims of the Institute's branches, with a short note on each branch prepared by the regional chairman. Aims of the Branches: The primary aims of the Branches of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are those of the Institute itself: to further the interest of its members, to uphold the status of the mining and metallurgical profession, and to promote the image of mining and metallurgy. Beyond these 'high' objectives, the branches have a special function in providing a more intimate relationship between the Institute and its members. The branches enable members who live outside the Johannesburg area to participate in the affairs of the Institute to an extent that would not otherwise be possible and that they themselves can define. This is achieved through the holding of social events, colloquia, and visits.
