Introduction In contrast to the general type of crushing mechanism in which the crushing surfaces alternately approach and withdraw from each other, described earlier in this section, and continuous-pressure break¬ers such as rolls and roller mills that will be described in a later chapter, impact crushers load by striking pieces of rock while in free fall and hurling them at high speed against stationary surfaces. Because the impact crusher depends for its effectiveness upon high velocity, wear is greater than in the slower-moving jaw and cone¬type wear parts, and for this reason its use is strictly limited to rela¬tively soft, friable, and sticky rocks that are characteristic of many nonmetallic mineral deposits. A few of these are phosphates, lime¬stone, barite, clay, asbestos rock, and coal. However, several examples of their use on soft lead-zinc and precious metal ores have been known. Although the use of impact crushers is expanding today into the range of ores containing as much as 15-18% silica, Taggart16 set the practical limit at 5%, and in the 1940s and 1950s several installa¬tions in the US and western Europe exceeded the limits of economical maintenance and were quickly superseded by the slower-moving, con¬ventional crushers. A rock that tends to be plastic or bouncy in a jaw or gyratory crusher when the force is applied slowly to reach ultimate strength, may become brittle with rapid loading and thus increase the effective¬ness of the applied forces. For this reason it is to be expected that as the quality of hammers, grates, plates, and cages improves with advances in steel technology, the use of high-speed crushers of this kind will increase. Terminology Modern usage differentiates between the impactor and the hammer mill, the former relying primarily on the impact of hammers (fixed or free-swinging) and secondarily upon pieces striking one another or steel surfaces; the hammer mill relies on both the centrifugal impact force of free-swinging hammers and the attrition and shear action between these hammers and well-placed grates suspended at the bot¬tom just below the hammer circle. The hammer mill, because of its grate discharge, restricts discharge of oversize rock to the grate open¬ing, while at the same time providing a trap for removal of tramp iron or other uncrushables. The impactor discharges free, so generally works with a screen to control product sizes. The question of terminology, impactor vs, hammer mill, creates difficulties because the similarities appear to outweigh the differences by far; if one were to list the similarities in order of importance and then the differences, he would be forced to conclude that they would best be dealt with as a single kind of crusher. Taggart16 gave it four names and added "as it is variously known," but it must be remembered that in 1945 the machine was nearly exclusively of the flailing-hammer type, while today the fixed-hammer rotor is also com¬mon. In this chapter the terms impactor and hammer mill will be used where they seem to apply. It is perhaps unfortunate that this terminology is being confused with rock breaking at the mine, usually with hand-held tools, e.g., the article "High-Energy Impact Rockbreaking" by Grantmyre and Hawkes, CIM Bulletin, August 1975. General Description Impact breakers, impact crushers, and hammer mills accomplish material breaking and reduction primarily through impact action of the material with fixed or free-swinging hammers revolving about a central rotor. The material to be crushed enters through an opening at the top or top side known as the "feed opening" or "hopper opening" and falls into the path of rotation (hammer circle) of the hammers. Initial breakage is accomplished in midair by collision of the dropping feed material with high-speed hammers. The second stage of breakage occurs when the pieces hit plates or breaker bars which line the crusher boxlike frame. Hammer mills rely further on a shearing and attrition action between free-swinging hammers and grid bars or grates at the crusher bottom which restrict discharge of oversize material until it is broken sufficiently to pass through the grid opening. The term hammer is used in reference to the piece which strikes the material, whether it is fixed on the rotor or free-swinging. It

5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

The sand and gravel industry in Southern California has made a sizeable contribution to the construction development of the 15 County area in this part of the State. Facing this mineral extraction industry, in the next decade, is a problem of meeting the market demand. The question is, "how can sand, gravel and rock operations be made compatible with goals for sound and attractive community development?" Three basic principal characteristics of the land needed for this-mining industry are: 1. The land must have workable sand, gravel or stone deposits. 2. The land must be properly located for transportation purposes close to the market in order to sell the aggregate at a minimum cost. 3. The land must be zoned so that it will be permissible to mine.

Many of the gravel deposits in Mississippi which range in age from Mississippian to Recent are being exhausted. Particularly in southern Mississippi the supplies will become very short in the near future and some use of sand will have to suffice. All methods of exploration for sand and gravel are presently being used in the State and this will be of some assistance in finding other deposits. A good supply of material for expanded clay aggregates is present in the State and will be sufficient to supply the needs of this segment of the construction industry for years to come. Crushed stone has been a minor contributor in years past and will probably become no more important in the future.

Public-private partnerships (PPP) are gaining in popularity at the federal, state and local levels as the public sector seeks private capital to finance infrastructure and other projects that traditionally have been funded with public funds. In general, a PPP involves a development agreement between a public owner and a private sector concessionaire. Under the development agreement, the concessionaire is responsible for financing, designing, constructing and typically operating and maintaining the completed project for a concession period (often multi-decades in duration). The concessionaire typically enters into an agreement ? the design-build agreement ? with a design-builder to design and construct the project. The concessionaire may secure financing from banks, investors or from a combination of these and other sources (collectively the financier). While the PPP experience in the United States has been modest to date, an increasing number of projects involving tunneling or other significant subsurface work are already being delivered in the PPP mode. Public owners have significant options to address risk allocation for subsurface conditions on PPP projects. The same sound and fundamental principles of fairness in risk allocation that apply in other major subsurface projects should be applied and adopted in the PPP context

Despite the controversies that have surrounded asbestos over the past 20 to 30 years, no knowledgeable authority has doubted the usefulness of this material. Were it not for the health risks associated with the manufacture and use of asbestos products, its physical and chemical characteristics would continue to be hailed as an undeniable boon to mankind. However, it has become clear over the past 30 years that like other major contributors to our modern industrialized society, asbestos must be handled responsibly and with the full understanding that lack of care can lead to injury, suffering and death. In this sense, asbestos shares characteristics with nuclear power, pesticides and even motor vehicle usage. It is unlikely that modern society would be willing to walk away from the benefits bestowed by any of these valuable resources. Rather, the appropriate response to the identification of danger is to define the type of risk, quantify its incidence, search for methods of decreasing the risk and implement programs to achieve the goal of minimization of risk. We should recognize at the outset that the risk cannot be diminished to zero without elimination of the material entirely from our midst. The concept of acceptable risk is a complex issue involving medical, legal, financial, moral and even psychological factors that defy precise quantification. In essence, the major danger produced by exposure to asbestos is its potential effects on the respiratory system. Despite the fact that asbestos workers have constant skin contact with the material and porbably swallow it in the course of their activities, inhalation of the fibers is recognized as the major health risk associated with its use. Aerosols of asbestos are inhaled not only by miners, millers and fabricators but also by urban dwellers who have no direct occupational contact with the material. This occurs because asbestos has been applied to our buildings and has been used in a wide variety of products that touch our daily lives. While it is estimated that three to four million people in the United States have been occupationally exposed to asbestos, the number who have been non-occupationally exposed is many times that number.

INTRODUCTION A major function of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Denver Safety and Health Technology Center (DSHTC), Ventilation Branch, is to provide engineering analyses of underground mine¬ ventilation systems for coal, metal, and nonmetal in¬spection departments in accordance with field surveys and data analyses. Health and safety problems such as the control of diesel contaminants, dust, methane, radon, and radon daughters all are dependent upon ventilation. It is necessary for the ventilation engineers at DSHTC to have a complete understanding of the various and highly complex ventilation systems used in the nation's mines. Only through the proper assembly and analysis of data can the engineer determine the causes of prob¬lems and make suitable recommendations. Furthermore, the engineer must have the ability to predict the results of any such recommendations. In the study of the ventilation system at any indi¬vidual mine, it is common practice to collect data on airflow quantities and pressures at key points throughout the mine. However, these data give only a single point¬-in-time view of the system. As the mine develops and progresses, the system undergoes numerous changes; as the mine becomes more extensive, the ventilation re¬quirements increase, and the costs rise. For proper utilization of the available resources, it is necessary for the engineer to have a sound engineering basis for deci¬sions on how best to ventilate the mine. To evaluate the system as a whole, particularly re¬garding possible system changes, it has become necessary to rely on computers to perform the calculations in¬volved in analyzing the network. This chapter sum¬marizes the implementation of such computer capabili¬ties at DSHTC, as well as the services that are available from DSHTC. ANALOG SIMULATIONS AND ANALYSES OF VENTILATION NETWORKS As early as 1954, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) in Pittsburgh, PA, was using an analog computer as an aid in analyzing ventilation systems. The Mcllroy Fluid Network Analyzer used filament-tube resistance elements and an electrical power supply to simulate mine-ventila¬tion systems electrically. This system is shown in Fig. 1. Analog simulation has proven to be a practical tool, providing fast analyses of complicated problems after the initial setup has been completed. Advancements in electronic technology over the past 24 years have made possible the construction of an analog computer that has streamlined several operating features of the previous machines. The DSHTC Ventilation Branch now has an improved electronic analog computer to assist in the analyses of ventilation systems. General Features As shown in Fig. 2, the analog computer used at the DSHTC Ventilation Branch has three "element" cabi¬ nets, a console, and a printer. The cabinets contain the fan elements and the airway-resistance elements that are used to "program" an analysis problem; each element is independent of the others. The console contains the "patchboard" and the controls necessary to operate the analog computer. The patchboard connects the inde¬pendent elements into the circuit appropriate for simu¬lating the ventilation system. The total system is controlled from a panel on the console, while the value corresponding to each element is set on the individual controls located on the face of each element. The control panel has three visual output displays that give the quantity of flow, the pressure of the output junction with respect to a datum, and the differential pressure across each element. The control panel also allows manual selection of the element to be monitored, or automatic scanning and printing of values for the entire system. Capabilities The analog computer can simulate an existing mine¬-ventilation network. This is accomplished by collecting field data at the mine to give a complete pressure-¬quantity network. Resistance values for each airway branch may be determined from the quantity of flow in the branch and from the pressure differential between the end-point junctions of the branch. The basic rela¬tonship to determine the resistance is expressed as: H=R •Q2 where H is the pressure differential, R is the resistance, and Q is the quantity of air in the flow. After the resistance values are known for all of the airways in the circuit, the elements on the analog com¬puter can be set to the corresponding values. Introduction Labor is the major cost element for most mining operations. Labor costs are continually increasing, both in nominal and constant terms. This is true in developed as well as less developed countries. There are two ways to control unit labor costs - labor costs per ton of ore mined. Replace labor with capital (increased mechanization) or improve productivity (reduce the labor force). Every miner is aware of specific inefficiencies at his or her particular operation. But the miner has no comparative measurement standards. So it is difficult to know whether these inefficiencies are major or minor. The miner may also be unaware of large-scale inefficiencies because ongoing labor practices may have caused management complacency. Met Research studied mining labor productivity. The firm collected pilot data by sending direct-mail questionnaires to 320 nonferrous mining operations around the world. The response rate was 27%, of which 78 operations provided full data on production and employment.

The standard Gibbs free energy of formation (ΔGo f, 298) of bastnasite, (Ce, La, Nd, Pr)FCO3, was estimated using four different methods. The obtained average values were − 1589.5 kJ/mol for CeFCO3, − 1599.5 kJ/mol for LaFCO3, − 1589.1 kJ/mol for NdFCO3, and − 1595.4 kJ/mol for PrFCO3. The value for cerium bastnasite, CeFCO3, was used to construct a potential vs. pH (Eh-pH) diagram to investigate the stability relations of cerium bastnasite. The diagram shows that CeFCO3 is stable in neutral to basic conditions (pH ~ 6.5–11).

Introduction Limestone injection work was completed in a 440-kW (1.5-million Btu per hour) pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000-kg/h (110,000-lb per hour) industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives were to: (1) identify the important variables that affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum SO2 removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. A more detailed report is given by Lewis et al. (1985). The test program was divided into two phases. The objectives of Phase I were to determine the important variables that affect SO2 reduction and to investigate the effect of limestone addition on combustor operation and heat transfer surfaces. The objective of Phase II was to determine, using only the important variables identified during Phase I, the conditions that resulted in the greatest sulfur dioxide reduction. Phase I Test program Using one limestone, five variables were identified as having an effect on SO2 reduction. These are noted with their respective ranges: heat release rate [103 to 166 kW/m3 (10,000 to 16,000 Btu per hour-cu ft)], Ca/S molar ratio (0 to 3), flue gas oxygen concentration (3% to 5%), additive particle size [90% -150 µm (-100 mesh) and 90% -45 µm (-325 mesh)], and burner stoichiometry (SR = 0.75 and >1.15). A 2.3% sulfur northern West Virginia coal, pulverized to a nominal grind of 70% -75 µm (-200 mesh), was burned for the tests. The limestone used was obtained from a Maysville, KY, quarry and contained 51.75% (wt) CaO. An 11-run statistically designed program (plus three duplicates) was used to screen the five variables. The effect of limestone injection on the combustor heat transfer surfaces was determined by comparing the heat transfer rates through a slag panel and fouling probes during periods with and without limestone injection. Combustor operation was determined by noting any operating problems that occurred during the tests. Test procedure After furnace wall temperatures had stabilized at operating conditions, heat transfer surfaces (slag panel and fouling probes) and the convection section were blown clean, and a four-hour test was begun. The

During the last decade, advances were made in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) technologies. Combined with heap leaching, these technologies made it viable to exploit large, low-grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra Mine is a good example for such a deposit. The deposit is situated in northern Chile at an elevation of about 4,000 m (14,000ft), 70 km (45 miles) north of Calama. Codelco sold 51% of the El Abra to Cyprus Minerals in June 1994, with Codelco retaining the balance. In 1993, Cyprus and the engineer on the project began discussions withinternational companies regarding the materials-handling system requiredfor the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast-track project.

MINERAL EXPLORATION 'The Function of Exploration Mineral exploration aims at locating the presence of economic deposits and establishing their nature, shape, and grade. As all ore bodies are finite, exploration is essentially the lifeblood of the mining industry. It is divided into two phases, reconnaissance and target investigation. It involves geological mapping, geophysical prospecting (aerial and ground or both), geochemical surveys, prospect drilling, and/or exploratory under-ground workings. Successful exploration is followed by development drilling, mine development, and eventually operation. In underground mining, the term "ore" is applied rather loosely to metalliferous rock that can be profit- ably mined, but nonmetallic industrial minerals and energy related materials constitute a large and growing portion of the tonnage extracted by underground methods each year. It is appropriate, therefore, to consider exploration as the search for any useful substance occurring in the earth or in the oceans that is of sufficient value as to volume, grade, chemical and physical com- position, and location as to make extraction by mining commercially profitable for the investment required. The Selection Process The search for ore includes hundreds of mineral commodities. The more successful exploration organizations tend to restrict the search to the mineral commodities for which they have strong exploration expertise and which have a high probability of being concentrated in areas open to exploration and development in sufficient volume, grade, and proximity to the surface to warrant the large expenditures of risk capital in finding an ore body. Special expertise is needed to engage in mineral exploration and development for the extended periods required for success. Individual prospectors continue to discover mineral occurrences, but it generally takes an organization with strong financial resources to carry the exploration process forward to the point of developing "ore." Still greater corporate resources in the form of management, engineering, and sales capability are needed to develop an ore body into an operating mine. In the past, companies other than those engaged in mining rarely conducted exploration, since they lacked the technical skills and know-how to bring a mine to fruition. A notable trend in recent years has been the success of other resource-oriented firms, such as petroleum companies, that have not only acquired the necessary skills to engage in exploration for hard minerals, but are doing so on a far more intensive scale than known in the industry heretofore. The desire to diversify from increasingly regulated oil and gas, the potential for the discovery of a bonanza, and the large scale of mining projects for these capital-intensive firms are the attractions. US government and certain international organizations, such as the United Nations, have fielded sizable exploration programs in the past decade on behalf of Third World countries wherein many of the world's higher grade deposits and scarce mineral resources are located. The level of overall mineral exploration in the industry is, regrettably, closely geared to the business cycle. Accelerated search during the periods of strong demand, shortages, and high prices, together with the long lead times necessary to develop mineral finds, often creates surges in supply which invariably are followed by a collapse in prices. The trend is, therefore, to exploration funding by larger better-endowed firms having the staying power to weather the cyclical nature of mining. Tax incentives, tariff policies, and other incentives have a decided impact on the level and nature of exploration. Surface mining regulations and environmental forces have fostered a renewed interest in under- ground development despite the lower average costs of surface mining. Spiraling inflation has caused mining costs to outpace prices for many mineral substances. Organizations increasingly are directing their search away from high- grade but limited tonnage occurrences toward low-grade disseminated bulk tonnages amenable to mining on a vast scale. Mining continues, therefore, to grow even more capital-intensive with half-billion-dollar mine-mill- smelter complexes now commonplace, compared with the hundred-million-dollar projects of a decade ago. Reconnaissance Exploration Having elected to search for specific mineral commodities, the exploration company narrows its focus to a reconnaissance of those regions offering the best potential. A working hypothesis which is constantly up- dated concerning the geologic controls for ore occurrence guides the search. The possibilities for discovery are best in areas of existing mines and known ore bodies, where the probabilities are high for additional ore occurrences. In such areas, published data on the trends and geologic controls of known mineral occurrences aid the search. Even in some remote territories, a variety of geologic data is available to the explorationist. The major sources of basic geologic data are the libraries of the US Geological Survey (USGS), the state geological surveys, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the US Bureau of Mines, and various institutions such as Colorado School of Mines. Overseas, virtually all of the countries have their own geologic survey groups which are associated directly, or indirectly, with their respective ministries of mines. The objective of reconnaissance exploration is to narrow the search by pinpointing target areas having interesting mineralization. These favorable areas are then investigated in detail to delineate potential ore bodies.

Much has been published concerning the subject of coal preparation as related to electric power generation however it is always a most vital topic for both utilities and coal producers, It also constitutes a field of study that is never finished since new concepts and changing demands continually require altered perspectives. One graphic illustration that has been used to emphasize the rapidity with which times are changing is the fact that during World War I, a station that consumed 1000 tons per day was looked upon as a large central station, while today some single generators require 1500 tons during the same period, For further emphasis, at that time a 20,000 horsepower turbo-generator was a mighty large machine; today, a unit of this size is planned for driving the boiler water feed pump required for a single large main unit. During the past ten years alone, electric utilities have more than doubled their percentage of coal consumed as compared to the total market. They now account for approximately 40% of the United States consumption and one-third of all production including export, Conversely, approximately 70% of all U. S. steam electric generation is by coal and this percentage is expected to increase. It is further predicted that utility consumption will increase from the current 160,000,000 tons per year to between 400 and 500 million tons in 1975 which is approximately equal to todays total production

INTRODUCTION Block caving is distinguished from other types of mining in its requirements that the mineral body to be extracted must cave after a relatively large tabular open¬ing is created underneath it, and that the caving must be predictable and controllable for both operating and safety reasons. A mineral body that caves readily may present special problems with respect to ground support in the mining access openings, where stability, rather than failure, is the desired objective. The complete ex¬traction of a caving block, which may measure 50 to 100 m on a side and 100 to 300 m in height, tends to create a large void, resulting in significant changes in the ground stress system and a migration of rock from all directions toward the void; these events begin very early in the life of the mine and lead to additional spe¬cial problems with respect to control of ground move¬ments in the mine working areas, in the rock adjacent to the caving stope, and on the subsiding surface above the mine. Thus, the mechanics of an undercut-cave operation involve a broad range of geotechnical subject matter, including the determination of the lithostatic earth stresses, the structural properties of a large jointed rock mass, the flow properties of the fragments after caving, the stability of tunnel-like openings, and the stability and displacements of the rock structure (1 to 2 km in size) that surrounds the ore body. The objectives are achieved by in-place measurement of rock properties, laboratory tests, theoretical structural analyses of the related prob¬lems, measurements of structural behavior in and above the mine, and comparison of theoretical predictions with actual performance in order to interpret and refine the predictive capability. Undercut-cave mining (Julin, et al., 1973) differs from most other methods in that the caving is an essen¬tial and inherent part of the excavation process and in¬volves the movements of millions of cubic meters of rock over distances of hundreds of meters, as compared to the gradual 2-m settling of the overburden typical of full¬caving longwall coal mining. Undercut-cave mining may involve a rock mass on the scale of a 1-km diam open¬pit mine, but mining is several times deeper than that in the open-pit mine; furthermore, a large portion of the rock mass is in a failed, rather than a stable, state. Ground-control problems are inevitable in a situa¬tion where ground movements are occurring on such a large scale, and where the rock mass is expected con¬veniently to cave at one location but to be stable at an¬other. To devise effective responses to these ground¬control problems, one needs to know first of all what is happening, not merely at the point where the symptoms are observed, but more broadly with respect to the be¬havior of the entire mine rock-mass structure over the total area of extraction, including the effects on the sur¬face as well as those underground. Monitoring structural behavior on this scale would require a sizable group of people, if they attempted to measure all the significant mining-induced changes of ground displacement and pressure, even on a 100-m grid of points. The practical approach is to conduct the mea¬surements activity by a judicious sampling, making in¬termittent, concentrated efforts in selected areas of lim¬ited extent to study problems of immediate importance; simultaneously a minimum level of surveillance is main¬tained over the total structure to delineate long-term be¬havior trends in the major structure, which provide the baseline reference data that are so essential for interpre¬tive purposes. Mine-structure behavior depends not only on the mine extraction configuration and sequence, but on the rock structural properties and how they change from one location to another in the mine. Increasing attention is being given to determinations of rock strength and de¬formation by performing mechanical properties tests in place and in the laboratory, and by drawing inferences from the mapping of geologic structure in mine openings as they are driven and from the logging of cores ob¬tained from exploration drilling that may be performed primarily for delineating ore reserves. Monitoring of mine-structure behavior and inter¬preting it in terms of the growing excavations and the structural properties of the rocks have significant im¬pacts on designing the major undercut-cave operations of undercutting and drawing the ore, supporting the ac¬cess openings, and controlling surface subsidence. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the com¬mon ground-control problems encountered in undercut¬cave mining, to relate them to the mining process, and to explain the geomechanical approaches to analyzing these problems with emphasis on methods that are most readily available to the mine staff. UNDERCUTTING, CAVING, AND DRAWING A distinguishing characteristic of an undercut-caving method of extraction is the objective that the rock mass fails of its own weight in a predictable and controllable manner, after it is undercut by excavating a tabular¬shaped void, horizontal or inclined. Induced or forced caving refers to procedures that may be resorted to when the ore will not self-cave over the desired span. Block caving, panel caving, and mass caving are terms used to denote the particular sequence of undercutting and ex¬tracting the total area of the ore body on a single min¬ing level. The discussion herein is not specialized to any of these variations; the word block as used does not imply anything as to sequence. CREATING THE UNDERCUT A common undercutting method is to drive a series of drifts and blast the intervening pillars. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining was devel¬oped by Inco Ltd. in the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, to deal with abnormal ground conditions en¬countered in pillar recovery. Although it is now some¬times utilized as a primary stoping method, the main application continues to be in pillar recovery. In any mining method in which fill is employed, pillar systems tend to fail gradually as stoping pro¬gresses. As a result, most pillars are completely destressed and broken by the time pillar recovery com¬mences. Control of the back in such ground becomes a major problem and is contingent on local conditions as they exist in the workplace. In most mining methods, operations such as drilling, blasting, slushing, and tim¬bering can be readily assessed and the mining cycle pre¬dicted. However, in the mining of pillars with overhand methods, the time and effort required to maintain a safe back varies to a quite unpredictable extent. For years the square-set method was the most effective means available for pillar recovery. However, in areas where bad ground was encountered, square setting was a costly and sometimes hazardous method. As the tonnage mined from pillars increased, it was apparent that a safer and less expensive approach was required. Past experience indicated that the best way to deal with broken ground was to mine from the top down. Top slicing systems were examined but were rejected due to the major sub¬sidence which resulted. However, ideas generated from studying top slicing finally developed into the present method of undercut-and-fill. This method, which has almost completely replaced square-set mining, exhibits reduced costs, has improved safety and efficiency, elimi¬nates the factor of bad ground overhead, and allows a closer prediction of the actual mining cycle. The result is more accurate scheduling of pillar production. This factor is of increasing importance as the tonnage from pillar recovery increases in relation to total mine pro¬duction. Undercut-and-fill is a method of extracting a block of ore by mining successive cuts, working from the top down. After a cut of ore is completely mined out, lami¬nated timber stringers are constructed along the sides for the full length of the cut. Round logs covered by a wire screen are laid across the stringers to form a mat. The cut is then tightly filled with hydraulically placed cemented sand fill. Mining is then resumed on the cut immediately below the mat. As the cut advances, the timber stringers are supported by round timber posts seated on the solid bottom of the cut. Drilling, blasting, muck removal, and timbering operations are repeated until all the ore in the cut has been removed. At this time, another log mat is laid and the cut is filled. This sequence is continued until the block has been mined from level to level. The basic principles of undercut-and-fill can be adapted to a variety of mining situations. It can be applied transversely or longitudinally in ore bodies of varying width, that dip from vertical to flat lying. The method can be applied using conventional equipment or it can be mechanized through the introduction of small diesel or air-powered units for muck removal. Undercut¬and-fill is a selective method, ore recovery is high, and dilution can be controlled to an acceptable level. How¬ever, it is a high-cost, labor-intensive method and as such its use is restricted to areas where the less costly meth¬ods of ground support are not successful or where bulk mining methods are not adaptable. One basic require¬ment for undercut-and-fill is an adequate source of hydraulically placed cemented sand fill and a dependable sand plant and distribution system. The success of the undercut method is to a large degree dependent on the competence of the fill placed in each of the successive cuts. In theory, the weight of the fill on each cut is supported in part by the cemented sand itself as it binds to the rough sides of the mined¬out areas next to the pillar walls, and in part by the tim¬ber support. As mining progresses beneath the mat, a downward pressure is exerted within the cemented fill and a voussoir arch develops above the mat, across the full width of the cut. This supports the major portion of the load. The log mat and posts have a double func¬tion in that they carry the remaining weight not sup¬ported by the voussoir arch and in addition prevent any pronounced settling of the fill mass. Excessive settling breaks the bond between the cemented fill and the pillar walls, eliminating the arch effect and transferring the entire load to the mat and posts. The theory of a voussoir arch forming within the cemented sand fill mass is substantiated in practice by the fact that pillars have been mined from level to level with no more significant weight on the bottom cuts than was experienced on the top cuts. In effect, as mining progresses downward, there is no additional transfer of weight from previous cuts to the cut being mined. APPLICATION OF UNDERCUT-AND-FILL Because of their size, the Sudbury ore bodies are, for the most part, mined transversely and, to a considerable extent, by filling methods. Transverse stoping blocks are designed with 9-m (30-ft) crown pillars established be¬low each level and with stopes separated by vertical rib pillars. In past years, floor pillars were left above the level as well, but present practice favors the silling of primary stopes at the base of the rail. Rib pillars are designed to meet the ground control requirements of the primary stoping methods. Local conditions and past experience generally dictate their size. Historically, since the square-set method was to be used for recovery, rib pillars were designed to accommo¬date standard 1.7-m (5'h-ft) sets. A typical rib pillar is four sets wide [6.7 m (22 ft)] when located between two square-set or cut-and-fill stopes having a width of 8.4 m (27.5 ft). A nickel-copper sulphide concentrate was treated in a pilot plant at Warren Spring Laboratory during 1961, by a hydrometallurgical roast-leach- solvent extraction process devised to cleanly separate the metal values, and produce acid sulphate liquors containing the metals. It is shown that 86 percent of the nickel and 95 percent of the copper could be leached from the calcine, after a sulphatizing roast on finely ground flotation concentrate. Iron was removed from the leach liquor by limestone neutralization with a small loss of values. Copper and nickel were separated by solvent extraction with naphthenic acid in kerosene after partial neutralization of the iron-free liquors with ammonium hydroxide. Hydrogen sulphide and chlorine were used to remove zinc (and residual copper) and cobalt impurities respectively. The recovery of pure copper and pure nickel, by electrowinning, from the acidic solvent extract strip liquors finally produced, appears technically feasible.

Longwall coal mining in southern Illinois occurs beneath some of the best agricultural land in the U.S. This region is characterized by highly productive, nearly level, and somewhat poorly drained soils. Subsidence from longwall mining causes changes in surface topography which alters surface and subsurface hydrology. These changes can adversely affect agricultural land by creating wet or ponded areas that can be deleterious to crop production. While most subsided areas show little impact from subsidence, some areas experience total crop failure. Coal companies are required by law to mitigate subsidence damage to cropland. The objective of this study was to test the effectiveness of mitigation in restoring grain yields to their pre-mined levels. The research was conducted on sites selected to represent conventional mitigation techniques on the predominate soils in the area. Corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max.(L.) Merr] yields in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 from mitigated areas were compared to yields from nearby undisturbed areas. There was no significant (a=0.05) difference in soybean yields averaged over the four years. Average corn yields, however, were significantly lower than reference areas. The impact of subsidence and mitigation is variable and site specific. Results were also related to weather. In wet years, yields in mitigated areas tended to be depressed. This research demonstrated that mitigation of subsidence damage can be successful.

The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration. Minipiloting of the preconcentration and oxidation stages of the Porgera flowsheet are described. The influence of these processes on subsequent recovery of precious metals together with the technical and economic necessity of concentrate pretreatment prior to oxidation are discussed.

Laboratory leaching experiments were conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of acidic solutions of thiourea, CS(NH2)2, for dissolving gold from finely disseminated gold ores. The ore tested was from the Chipmunk orebody of the Northumberland mining district in Nye County, Nevada, USA. Extractions of up to 90 percent were attained from the ore. Extraction was shown to be dependent on thiourea concentration, ferric sulfate oxidant concentration, acid concentration, and leaching time. Optimum conditions were an ambient temperature leach near pH 1.0 utilizing 100-200 kg/t thiourea and 50 kg/t ferric sulfate for 8 to 24 hours.

The events which led to computer control of the grinding circuit at Brenda Mines are described, beginning with mill operating philosophy. High production rates are encouraged so that, despite severe upstream disturbances, a manual control method to meet this philosophy had developed. Unfortunately, due to the time interval between manual control adjustments, losses in production resulted. An analog control method was devised and, although superior to manual control in some situations, was found to suffer from several practical limitations. The data logging capabilities of a control computer seemed warranted. Circuit test- work combined with an analysis of operating data showed that (1) metallurgical personnel, at times could increase production rates by as much as 10 percent over that achieved by grinding operators, (2) the chosen data base required an increase of 2 percent or more to be statistically significant and (3) for a 2 percent increase there would be a significant rate of return of investment in a computer installation, Consequently one grinding circuit was fully instrumented, and a rented control computer was installed by Brenda personnel. Prior to installation, Brenda metallurgical and instrumentation personnel were trained in the use of the computer. An experimental program was devised with short and long term objectives. The short term objective was to develop a practical control strategy which would yield immediate production improvement. This goal has been met as described in this paper. Statistically significant increases in excess of 2 percent have been established. Work is being completed for the permanent installation of computer control on all four grinding circuits at the present time. Long term objectives are (1) off line analysis of the circuit using mathematical models of process units, (2) on line experiments to study alternative contol tactics, and (3) possible expansion of computer facilities to the crushing plant.
