Microbiological leaching has been used as an alternative approach to conventional hydrometallurgical methods of uranium extraction. In the microbiological leaching process, iron-oxidizing bacteria oxidize pyritic phases to ferric iron and sulfuric acid, and uranium is solubilized from the ore due to sulfuric acid attack. If uranium in the ore material is in the reduced, tetravalent form (UIV), a red ox reaction is involved whereby uranium is oxidized to the hexavalent form (UvI) upon dissolution. In acid-leaching systems, the primary oxidant is ferric iron, which is reduced to ferrous iron by its chemical reaction with UIV. The ferrous iron thus formed is reoxidized to ferric iron by iron-oxidizing bacteria such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. Nutritional requirements and responses to environmental extremes of acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria are appraised. The S-entity in Fe-sulfides is oxidized to sulfate by bacteria similar to Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Pyrite and marcasite oxidation is a sulfuric acid forming reaction. Heap, dump and in situ leach techniques are feasible as bacterial leaching systems.

The Pokorny sulfur deposit is located in the northwest comer of the Delaware basin in the Rustler Springs sulfur district of west Texas. To date, 57 sulfur test wells have been drilled by Addwest Minerals delineating a resource of greater than one million long tons (It) of native sulfur. The deposit, hosted by the Permian Ochoan Castile Formation evaporite sequence, is a sulfur-bearing bioepigenetic limestone replacement of banded bituminous anhydrite. Three distinct mineralized horizons are present that correlate with zones of halite dissolution in the Castile. Sulfur mineralization occurs as hydrocarbon-poor disseminated grains, and as crystalline linings of discontinuous planar voids and large vugs.

This study examines the accuracy of area sampling for measuring the dust exposure of mining machine operators in coal mines. The specific objective of this research was to find locations where an area sampler might work better than earlier studies have indicated. The results show that fixed-location area sampling cannot accurately predict the dust exposure of a machine operator, even when the best fixed location is sought, the fixed location is quite close to the operator and the bias due to the dust concentration gradient is corrected. Industrial hygienists have known for many years that area sampling is unsuitable for measuring air contaminant exposures in the workplace. Near contaminant sources, the dilution air and the contaminants are not evenly mixed. Therefore, when workers are near contaminant sources, exposure measurements must be taken from the worker's breathing zone to be accurate.

The development of new processes has to follow "best practice" rules in order to be technically and economically as efficient as possible. However, innovations, new process routes and new rules are continuously emerging to minimize financial risk and maximize environmental compliance. Process simulation, which offers a complete overview of the flowsheet, makes it possible to cope with this new challenge-minimizing waste production and water consumption. Furthermore, simulation provides an estimate, at the early stage, of the cost of alternative technical routes. Four examples involving biotechnological circuits are presented, both at the design and commissioning stages.

Utah has produced about 31.7 kt (1 billion oz) of silver, more than any state in the United States except Idaho. Several high-grade ore systems in Utah, where the mines are now closed, occur within large polymetallic limestone-hosted districts related to plutonic complexes. These mines fed several major lead smelters for nearly a century. Interaction of magmatic chloride-rich fluids with carbonate rocks localized significant bonanzas within these districts. A low sulfidation state was produced in the fluids by their passage through limestones. The Bingham openpit mine has also yielded more byproduct silver than other porphyry copper-molybdenum-gold systems. Away from exposed intrusive rocks, some large silver-only systems occur in Mesozoic sandstone and in caldera-related veins in volcaniclastic rocks. Thick permeable latest-Proterozoic basement metaquartzite sequences present beneath western Utah may have been important, as perhaps they were in the Coeur d'Alene district of Idaho, in providing chloride and silver-rich ore fluids. However, it is clear that specific Tertiary magmatic events played an essential role in the evolution of the Utah silver-rich metallogenic province. The largest silver districts in the state are genetically related to Tertiary porphyritic plutonic rocks.

Pit slope designs at Nickel Plate Mine have used relatively steep interim and final wall slopes of 60 degrees overall. The rock is unusually strong and tough with most discontinuity sets being steeply dipping. An integrated program of monitoring and drainage has been used. Stopes of large extent which are generally unsupported occur on the property. For the most part, no deterioration of the stability of the stopes has occurred over the last 30 or more years. Mining methods through these areas have used a combination of fill s placed via VCR drop raises and crater blasting of the backs. One of the major challenges in mining through the stope areas is to maintain slope stability conditions and to reduce dilution of the higher value ore zones occurring immediately around the stope areas. The underground portion (about 10 km) of Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line consists of eight shield tunnels connected with Kawasaki Man-Made Island in between, at four underground locations. The connection work had to fulfill strict precision and safety requirements in the ground about 60 m below soft seabed, but was completed successfully in May 1997. This report describes the connection work in detail, featuring the method of investigating shield machines’ relative positions, ground freezing method and connection mechanism and procedures. It also mentions the present state of Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line that was put in service on December 18, 1997.

Phytotechnologies use plants to remediate various media impacted with different types of contaminants. These technologies can be implemented either in situ or ex situ. The affected media in which phytotechnologies can be applied include soil, sediments, groundwater and surface water. They are best applied at sites with shallow contamination of organic, nutrient, or metal pollutants that are amenable to one of five treatment options: phytoextraction, phytotrans-formation, rhizosphere, bioremediation, phyto-stabilization or rhizofiltration. Phytoremediation can be used along or, in some cases, in place of mechanical cleanup methods. Phytoremediation can be used to clean up metals, pesticides, solvents, explosives, crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and landfill leachates.

Sustainable development is a principle for the way we should act in the present. It ensures also options for the future to achieve a balance between social, economic and ecology development. The efficiency of raw material utilisation is being enhanced through technological developments, starting from extraction through all the following stages of the value creation chain. The use of domestically produced resources helps to assure the technological know-how. Additional indicators being collected and published by individual companies are questionable in countries with a tightly regulated legal framework such as in Germany, but make sense in developing and threshold countries. Sustainability in terms of efficient use of raw materials will manifest itself at the next stages of the value creation chain. Examples for efficiency improvement can be found in the steel, the power generation and agriculture industries. The approval procedures for German mining operations entail an internationally extremely strict assessment of the potential impact on the environment. All the mining activities include remediation and recultivation where the practise in Germany has become model character by international levels.

In contrast to pyrometallurgy's six thousand year history in the production of metals, that of hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it at all was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in wpper production in the present century, paricularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching, and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. Solvent extraction has become a major factor during the past quarter century by permitting novel leaching technology which produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulphuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends which should grow in importance in the future with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed briefly and key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared to that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

Cyprus Pima is a medium-sized open-pit copper mine located 35 km (22 miles) south of Tucson, AZ. The ore body was discovered using geophysical prospecting methods in 1953 and was originally worked as a small underground mine followed by small open-pit operations. As mining equipment grew larger and the economic ore grade dropped, the operation grew in size, through four expansions, to the present 50 500 tpd (56 500 stpd) milling rate. The remaining stripping ratio is about 2.5 to 1. Mining equipment includes 11 electric shovels ranging in size from 6 to 15 m3 (8 to 20 cu yd) and 42 diesel-electric haulage trucks ranging in size from 89 to 223 t (100 to 250 st). Mine planning is performed at Cyprus Pima to serve several functions. The most important is to plan ahead, one year at a time, to predict the ore grade and stripping requirements on a month-by-month schedule. This yearly plan is necessary for budget preparation and is revised once each quarter to incorporate variations in actual production experienced during the preceding quarter.

Slurry system are the principal method for storage and transportation of solids within and between concentration operations In a mineral processing plant. A slurry 1s a mixture of solid particles In water, or a chemical solution, that behaves like a liquid. The design of slurry transportation systems is generally analagous to pumping and piping water, but with a few notable exceptions: • The interaction of particle on particle affects slurry transport. • Particles often interact with the fluid, particularly when chemicals have been added to the system. • Particles have a frustrating tendency to settle from the slurry suspension, especially into locations not considered In the design. • Solids have an affinity for wetted surf aces and tend to wear them away. Slurry transportation systems Include a number of separate components, each requiring special design considerations. A systematic evaluation of each component of a slurry transfer system will help overlooking the small details that could cause operational headaches. Most slurry transport systems include: • A receiving sump or tank that provides for mixing and/or momentary storage of slurry. • A driving force.. by a pump, atmospheric pressure or gravity. • A suitable conduit for transportation.. pipes or launders. • A delivery objective.. another sump or process vessel, or distribution system to several process points. • A control strategy and design to regulate the transfer operation. Cost-effective underground mine configurations have been designed in highly fractured rock masses where the stone possesses a high material strength. A limestone mine in the eastern United States is used to demonstrate procedures for the geotechnical design of one such operation. The mine discussed is located in both limbs and the axis of a recumbent fold that fractured the rock mass. In a highly fractured rock mass, where the host rock has high strength, a design can be developed to alleviate intact rock failure. This is possible because in most cases as the stress levels needed for intact failures are approached, the stresses are quickly dissipated due to movement along discontinuities, which represent planes of weakness. As a result most underground failures in highly fractured rock are due to sliding or toppling. Even when intact rock fails in a highly fractured rock mass, it is the movement along an existing joint or other weakness plane that often initiates or causes this failure. It is therefore important to obtain the characteristics of weakness planes that are the discontinuities within the mass. The required information on weakness planes, geology, and strength of materials is discussed and recommendations for obtaining this information are presented. A discussion is provided on failure modes and the use of developed information for their evaluation. The impact on geotechnical design is demonstrated through pillar sizing procedures; however, this approach can also be applied to mine roof and pillar foundations.

Within the national and international strategy of the German based construction company HOCHTIEF, the majority of its business units is equipped with the comprehensive software package ARISTOTELES. This software is a powerful business information system for all accounting and controlling related processes in medium-sized and large construction and other related companies. Due to the complexity of the software, time constraints, and limited financial resources an implementation of this software package requires thorough project management. In this paper the relevant elements of project management are outlined based on practical experiences gained during this international IT - implementation project. Special emphasis is directed to the identification and management of potential risks. In this case particular acknowledgement was given to the multinational nature of the project and modernization of the business. This includes thorough reorganization of the company, significant changes of job requirements, and substantial trainings for its employees. At the same time key success factors like knowledge transfer, adoption of Czech legal requirements, commitment of management, networked thinking, and integrated project planning come into play. The costs for implementation had to be carefully evaluated because the software was implemented in a country with a considerably low cost I price level. All these impacts to the business had to be managed within the scope of transformation of business and political environment from socialist to market driven economy.

This paper describes the application of foam to control respirable dust in a double-drum longwall mining section. The feasibility of injecting an adequate quantity of foam through the shearer drum was initially established in the laboratory. Thereafter, underground testing of the foam system to determine its effectiveness on an active operating longwall was conducted in a mine in West Virginia. The foam system proved superior to the water spray system. The details of the laboratory and field investigations, the results obtained, and the degree of acceptance of this system by the mining company are discussed in this paper.

The complexity of surface mining operations is increasing as attention is directed towards mining larger tracts of lower grade, higher cost deposits. Large tonnage requirements from these mines necessitate utilization of many large pieces of equipment. This equipment must be utilized efficiently, with production maintained at or near designed capacities. Basically, the problem is to select, size, and schedule equipment to maximize profits and minimize adverse environmental impacts (Anon., 1977). The time, manpower, and cost limitations required to analyze a wide variety of situations and alternatives in planning surface mines have been sidestepped with the application of simulation methods using a digital computer. Since a simulator can be programmed to represent the situations which are to be analyzed, many alternatives can be evaluated in a relatively short time. Input variables are easily changed and the resulting changes which take place in the system can be analyzed. When standard methods of analyses are applied, weeks and many man-hours are involved in analyzing large-scale mining operations. At the same time many simplifying assumptions must be made since these operations are dynamic and transient. Hence, it becomes difficult to make sound engineering decisions and take proper and timely corrective action in the absence of simulation methods. This chapter is concerned with the application of one such method, namely, the open-pit materials handling simulator (OPMHS) developed by the Mining Engineering Section, The Pennsylvania State University (Manula, Albert, and Ramani, 1977).

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in cooperation with mine operators, conducted a study of heat stress exposures among mine rescue workers in underground mines. Mine rescue workers face extreme heat loads as they enter hot and poorly ventilated environments, particularly when they are wearing breathing apparatuses. The burden of wearing a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA), the inability to drink fluids for extended periods of time, and the potential for ventilation disruptions and fires combine to increase the risk of heat illness during a response to an emergency. In this research, ambient environmental conditions and heat strain indicators were measured using conventional ventilation monitoring tools during mine rescue training exercises. Heat strain was measured with an ingestible temperature-sensing pill that measured core temperature continuously. In addition, a heart-rate monitoring chest strap was used to indicate physical strain resulting from physical activity and heat. Both core temperature and heart rate data were trans-mitted to a remote recorder worn by a rescuer and time-stamped. Team activities were also observed to determine the contribution of work rate to a person’s total heat load. The effectiveness of several engineering controls, such as cooling the air inhaled by rescuers through an apparatus, wearing cooling vests, and supplying water through the CCBA masks, were investigated. Administrative controls, such as limiting the duration of exposure and controlling the work rate through forced-rest regimens, were also evaluated. Results to date are discussed, and tools for evaluating team condition and estimating the length of time it would be safe for rescuers to work are proposed.

Ore blending for process optimization is becoming an increasing factor for managing cost and productivity. Economic mining and processing a very low value ore in an extremely competitive market results in constant cost-cummng initiatives. The inherent conflict between the lowest possible mining cost and the lowest possible milling cost is reviewed here in the context of blasting for autogenous mills. Iron ore blending focuses on a number of properties-liberation values, weight recovery and concentrate silica being the most important. Other chemical and metallurgical factors are also commonly controlled. Recent research has fueled an emerging interest in blending on physical ore properties as well. Fully autogenous mills rely on the large, competent fraction of crushed feed to act as grinding media. Previous test work indicated that Hibtac mills require specific amounts of 6- to 10-inch ore. High recirculating loads require a steady influx of large rock fragments. Blast designs, therefore, are presently characterized by wide patterns and low powder factors. Current efforts are aimed at improving mill throughput while reducing overall energy costs. Based on research and published case studies and the advent of optical measuring devices, Hibbing Taconite Company has embarked on a blast optimization program to identify optimum mill feed and to design blast fragmentation goals for each geological unit and each mining area. This paper outlines the preliminary findings of an ongoing, broad-based team effort which requires close cooperation of geologists, mine engineers, crushing and milling personnel. Three specific areas of investigation are reviewed: I) Historical relationships between powder factor and mill performance, 2) Blast fragmentation modeling using the Kuz-Ram model, and 3) Drill

The advances in knowledge of world bauxite resources in the last few decades include contributions to the geology of deposits, discovery of large resources, shifts in availability, and changes in. the industry in response to political and economic pressure. Improvements in the understanding of geology have resulted from the larger numbers of geologists working on bauxite and better exchanges of information. The large deposits discovered are mainly the laterite type in tropical regions. These discoveries have led to major increases in bauxite resource estimates as well as to shifts in bauxite availability and in the ranking of producing nations. Changes resulting from political, environmental, and economic pressures have resulted in increased costs of bauxite and in renewed interest in potential nonbauxite sources of aluminum. Aluminum is produced from nonbauxite raw materials only in the U.S.S.R.; however, research on extraction processes or investigations of nonbauxite alumina resources has taken place in several countries.
