While calcium ferrite slags have been successfully used in continuous copper converting for the last 30 years, ferrous calcium silicate slag was proposed about 8 years ago as an additional alternative for copper smelting. Although both slags are normal extensions of each other their phase relations have not been completely clarified. In this paper the liquidus relations of both slags have been quantified at various areas that cover both of them. The existing experimental data have been first reviewed and discussed in relation to the solidification procedure. An original physical model is then used to predict various diagrams of the liquidus surface of both slags. It is shown that the ternary liquidus diagrams normally used for FeOx-SiO2-CaO system are not suitable for industrial slags. The new model diagrams of Fe/CaO versus SiO2 and Fe/SiO2 versus CaO as well as Fe/CaO versus Temperature and Fe/SiO2 versus temperature are proven to be much more convenient for ferrite and ferrous calcium silicate slags. Based on these diagrams the effect of SiO2 and CaO on the melting temperature is quantified. The effect of Cu2O is also quantified through the model. Some Fe/CaO versus Cu2O and Fe/SiO2versus CaO at various copper contents are predicted and the results show good agreement with the experimental data. It is also shown that in the presence of liquid copper, Cu2O is dissolved in the slag depending on the oxidation degree of the system and might lower the liquidus temperature. Some discussions are also presented taking into account plant observations and important conclusions are drawn for copper smelting and converting

In the flash smelting technique, developed by Outokumpu Oyj, off-gases with dust load are directed into the heat recovery boiler (HRB). As the temperature decreases, metallic sulphates become thermodynamically stable. Sulphation of oxidic particles initiates. The release of heat causes an increase in particle temperatures, and soft sulphated particles can stick to the heat transfer surfaces. Dust accretion may form and cause operational problems. The objectives of the project are to study sulphation reaction mechanisms and kinetics of flue- dust particles under HRB conditions, and get more information for the flue-dust treatment possibilities. The sulphation behaviour of synthetic Cu2O particles (37-53 pm) was studied using a fluid-bed reactor of laboratory scale. The experimental parameters in the latest campaign were oxygen and sulphur dioxide contents of 2.5-10 vol-% 02 and 40-60 vol-% SO2 respectively and temperatures of 600-660°C. Samples were examined microscopically (SEM+EDS) and chemical analysis were conducted. The sulphation rate was found to have a maximum at the certain temperature, which was dependent on the gas SO2 content. Regardless of the level of SO2, a rise in oxygen content promoted sulphate formation.

A long term research project is in progress to establish the parameters of an acid leach process to recover alumina 'froui' high-iron and/or low-iron white bauxites, kaolinite, coal. ash and copper mine tailing. In this paper the results of acid leaching of copper flotation tailing for the removal of alumina are presented. The tailing is very complex material which contains 25% Al203 in the -10 lim fraction. X-ray diffraction indicates presence of quartz, kaolinite and minor 'alunite. After classification and ,separation of the -10 lim fraction, the raw material is fired to 550GC and leached at 90GC. Filtration is applied for the separation of white silicate residue form leach liquid. After the purification step, aluminum salt is crystallized from the solution, and calcined to alumina. Kinetic correlation and regime, of the processes are defined and presented in the paper.

"The steelmaking industry which uses electric arc furnaces (EAF) generates approximately 250.000 tons of EAF flue dusts annually in Turkey. These flue dusts contain valuable metals such as zinc, iron and lead. For example, if these flue dusts can be treated efficiently, disposal problems certainly decreases and annually almost 40.000-75.000 tons of zinc can be recovered. In this study, powder and pellet forms of EAF flue dusts taken from a steel mill were carbothermally treated in a temperature controlled pilot scale rotary furnace via carbothermal reduction in order to investigate the reduction behavior of Zn and Pb. Temperature (900-1000 and 1100 °C) and time (0-90 minutes) were selected as reaction parameters. The chemical analysis was performed for the sample residues.IntroductionTurkey’s steel production reached to 23.3 million tons in 2006. There are three integrated steel plants of which capacities vary from 0.7 to 3 million tons per year and seventeen EAF steel plants of which capacities vary from 0.06 to 2 million tons per year [1]. When it is considered that more than 74 % of the Turkish steel production is produced by EAF method and approximately 10 - 15 kg of dust is formed per ton of steel during this process, the amount of annual generated EAF dust may be estimated at approximately 0.25 million tons. EAF dust which contains valuable metals such as zinc, lead, iron, cadmium, and chromium, is considered as hazardous waste product in steelmaking industry. If these flue dusts can be treated efficiently, not only the disposal problems certainly decrease, but also annually almost 40.000-75.000 tons of zinc can be recovered. Many studies which exist on recovering of the valuable metals from EAF dust, propose and practice many hydro-metallurgical and pyro-metallurgical treatments [2- 7]. In this study a laboratory scale work were performed to investigate reduction behavior of zinc and lead in EAF dust by carbothermal process in a rotary furnace."

"The strategy of developing the Romanian textile industry sub-sectors envisages the achieving of certain superior production indices, from a physical and value point of view, in 2010, a quantitative increase of textile wastes by 14% in 2010 as compared to 2000, implicitly. The percentage of the turned-to-profit wastes will have an increasing tendency, from 53.6% in 2000 to 74.7% in 2010. The article synthetically presents the innovative elements of the technology of processing the industry textile wastes.1. Introduction“People will need to re-adopt this sense of rarity that has been forgotten over the last two centuries. Humans need to collect, sort, recover, going back to the old ideal of alchemists: complete the material cycle, turn waste into resource, reduce all forms of predatory behaviour as much as possible”Irrespective of the historical period, geographical positioning, economic power or employed technologies, wastes resulted and will result in a bigger or smaller quantity as long as life and activity on Earth go on. The negative effects of these over the environment factors and implicitly over population health are well known all over the world and not approaching this matter enough may have catastrophic consequences over life. Having in view these aspects, finding solutions for diminishing the general waste quantity and limiting the negative effects of those products is important, by effecting the reusing of the recyclable ones in the production processes as secondary raw materials, and by ecologically treating and storing those than cannot be reused.2. "1. Introduction The North-Bohemian Basin area is known for its largest Czech brown coal deposit. About 50% brown coal reserves have been exploited in the North-Bohemian Basin by the mining company of Severoceske doly, a.s. (North Bohemian Mines, j.s.c.) today. The opencast mining of brown coal naturally led to vast landscape damages. Therefore reclamation work has acquired great significance. The specific feature of Severoceske doly, a.s. mining is the fact that the mining has been realized in two geologically absolutely different localities. This fact demands even rather different methods of reclamations. The main problem at Doly Bilina localities is the occurrence of overburden rocks from the series of rocks of coal seams. These rocks are texturally light but large amounts of coal (cca 5 %) and sulphur (cca below 3 %) which makes the soil reaction extremely acid. If they appear on the surface of the dump, they create a phytotoxic area, reclamation of which requires special methods. Rocks from Doly Nastup Tusimice localities are more suitable to reclamation use, but texturally extremely heavy rocks with large fraction of physical clays appear there that can generate a sterile soil area. Their reclamation requirements are completely different from those on Doly Bilina phytotoxic areas. That is the reason of the application of some non – traditional restoration methods. This report briefly summarises the experience in application of fertilizable soils, power plant stabilizer, power plant ash and aerial sowing of charlock. The results are documented by the monitoring of the physical, mineralogical and pedological parameters of rocks in testing areas.2. Properties of Overburden Rocks in Opencast Mines Bilina and Libous The reclamation work methodology in the North Bohemian Basin is above all determined by the properties of overburden rocks which occur in the top horizon of the reclaimed sites. The research of the rocks reclamation properties dealt with four current mining localities in the central part of the basin. It concerned the Bilina and Libous mines. This chapter states the stratigraphic status properties of these sites with respect to reclamation availability. The total status of the area of interest is shown in the figure No. 1."

"Natural fibers obtained from plants have increasingly been used as reinforcement of polymeric composites in engineering applications. This is the case of the fiber extracted from the piassava palm tree, a native of the southeast region of South America, which for a long time has been used in simple items like brooms and brushes. Recently it was reported that the tensile strength of the piassava fiber varied inversely with the equivalent diameter. Following that previous work, the elastic modulus and the density dependence on the diameter of stiffer piassava fibers of the Attalea fiinifera species was investigated. Precise measurements with a profile projector and Weibull analysis of the experimental results indicated that both the elastic modulus and the density of piassava fibers also follow an inverse correlation with the diameter. Scanning electron microscopy observations of the microstructure and fracture surface showed that defects and participation of microfibrils are responsible for this correlation.IntroductionIn the past decades, both the increase in the price of the petroleum and climate changes due to greenhouse gas emissions are motivating the use of renewable and low cost natural materials as a substitute for energy intensive and CO2 contributor synthetic materials [1]. A typical case is that of natural cellulose-based fibers extracted from cultivated plants in comparison to glass fibers, which are extensively used for composite reinforcement. In fact, these natural lignocellulosic fibers are increasingly being investigated [2-6] as possible reinforcements of polymeric composites, and in some cases, successfully replacing glass fiber composites in engineering applications [7]. The automobile industry has remarkable examples of lignocellulosic fiber composite substitutions [8-10]. Not only do some of these fibers display specific mechanical properties comparable to glass fibers but their composites also contribute to lower equipment wear and better finishing of molded components [6]."

The current status of metal hydride alloys for NiMH batteries was systematically reviewed. Extensive application-oriented research and development has successfully made the NiMH battery an important part, with growing potential, among rechargeable batteries. The rare earth based metal hydrides (AB5) have been considered the best alloy material for use in the negative electrode in NiMH batteries. However, being in demand for high performance electronic markets, the still young NiMH industry is facing serious technical challenges in developing better products. Among all the efforts to respond to the challenges, advanced AF3, alloys are in great demand: the capacity enhancement race requires new or improved alloys possessing higher volumetric capacity; price competition mandates MH materials with low cost; high performance under severe service environments calls for alloys with high corrosion resistance when subjected to electrochemical cycling; and finally, high power service requires the negative electrode to deliver current at high rates.

The falling real price level of copper metal and changes in the treatment and refining charges has been characteristic to the copper industry during the last few decades. Outokumpu's continuous development of the Flash Smelting Technology and increased productivity of the smelters based on these improvements may be one of the basic reasons that have influenced to these trends. From the early beginning of the Flash Smelting Technology, it has been characterized by low operation costs and low emissions, and the vision has been to develop the technology towards Direct Blister Flash Smelting. In Direct Blister Flash Smelting, both smelting and converting are carried out in one furnace making it possible to reduce the number of unit operation steps and thus lower both operation and investment costs. The merger of large copper production companies taken place during the last few years is a sign of a new age in copper production business. Now, the aim is to increase the productivity of copper production not just by utilizing the economy of scale but also by increasing integration and optimization of the whole production chain from mine to refinery. This also means increasing win- win based cooperation between companies. A Production Network concept based on the Flash Converting process enables existing smelters to decrease the operating costs and expand the smelting capacity with minimum investment and at the same time to decrease the emissions of the smelters. The new structure in ownership and partnership between copper production companies makes it easier to adopt the Production Network concept to both new and existing plants, where there exists a lot of built-in capacity. The paper presents Outokumpu's prediction on how the new options for the smelters will contribute to further changes in the structure of copper production. These visions are illustrated by giving examples on how the combination of matte production, Flash Converting, and Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting could be adapted in existing and new smelters.

"The article introduces the process EAF with De-P hot metal charging for Melting Stainless Steel in Baosteel stainless steel Branch. Based on the practice of production, the main effect on the Cr Loss during EAF with De-P Hot Metal Charging Melting Stainless Steel including using oxygen, the material charging and making slag are theoretically analyzed. The optimization of using oxygen can reduce the oxidation of Cr during EAF Melting Stainless Steel. The optimization of material charging, especially Si content is suitable can reduce the loss of Cr. Effective reduction can realize the lowest Cr oxide in slag. Based on the character of the process EAF with De-P hot metal charging for Melting Stainless Steel, applied the integrated control method, the Cr loss during EAF melting stainless steel decreased 43.10%. 1 INTRODUCTION EAF with De-P HM charging for melting stainless steel is a technology for stainless steel making. Practice prove that the new process can shorten tap to tap time, reduce the special power consumption, dilute the impurity element from the stainless steel scrap that is propitious to produce the high quality stainless steel, alleviate the shortage of stainless steel scrap to the production. As a new technology, the process has some technical problems and difficulties. The proportion of Cr alloy charging exceeds 20% during EAF with De-P hot metal charging melting stainless steel. As Cr alloy is difficult melting and easy oxidation, too much Cr alloy charging result in Cr loss too much and tap to tap time too long for EAF production. By applying the new technology, Baosteel stainless steel branch has increased the technology level and economy index. Now the content of Cr oxide in slag reduce from 8.59% to less than 6.0%. The Cr loss during EAF melting stainless steel decreased 43.10%. According to the practice application, the process of EAF with De-P HM melting stainless steel are theoretically analyzed. The main factors affecting the Cr loss during EAF with De-P hot metal charging melting stainless steel are discussed."

HW Process Technologies has successfully developed and commercialized various applications utilizing Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS?) systems for the processing of acidic copper hydrometallurgical solutions and wastewaters. Copper hydrometallurgical EMS? applications include water balance control and increased copper concentration in heap and dump copper leach operations, tankhouse bleed stream treatment to separate/recover copper and cobalt from iron, and removal of PLS/Electrolyte suspended solids/colloids to eliminate "crud" formation during copper SX/EW. Similar applications are underdevelopment to provide ionic separations in copper refinery bleed streams, copper smelter acid plant streams, as well as organic/LIX removal from aqueous electrolyte and raffinate streams. Copper mine wastewater EMS? applications include treatment of copper leach solution contaminated groundwaters for copper recovery and treatment of unwanted heap/dump drainage to provide enhanced precipitation, a smaller precipitation plant, improved operating costs and better quality discharge water, particularly in terms of TDS and sulfates. A discussion of the EMS? technology and general separation results on typical process solutions and wastewaters will be presented. HW Process Technologies, Inc. commercial installations treating copper pregnant solutions and leach solution contaminated groundwaters are in-place at an old Asarco smelter/refining operation, Mexicana de Cananea copper mine, and a major U.S. copper mine, with several additional installations pending. Several case studies, including results from a selection of these installations, will be included with detailed capital, operating cost, and system payback data.

"Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) studies of tetravalent platinum from acidic chloride solutions have been carried out with Alamine 336 as an extractant diluted in kerosene. The title metal shows the inverse behavior at higher acid concentrations. Plot of log D vs. log [Acid], mol.L-1 gave a straight line with a negative slope of 0.8±0.03 indicating the exchange of one mole of hydrogen ions for every mole of platinum(IV) extracted into the organic phase. Extraction of platinum(IV) increases with increase of extractant concentration. The plot of log D vs. log [Extractant], mol.L-1 is linear with slope 1±0.3, indicating the association of one mole of extractant with the extracted metal species. The plot between metal distributions to aqueous to organic phases is 1.3±0.01; it indicates monomeric species was formed in organic phase. Stripping of metal from the loaded organic (LO) with mineral acids such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric acids and bases like ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide are studied. The results indicated that hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide are the better stripping agents when compared with other acids and bases. Increase of temperature decreases the percentage extraction of metal indicating the process is endothermic. Regeneration and recycling capacity of Alamine 336 and extraction behavior of associated elements such as aluminium(III), magnesium(II), cobalt(II), iron(III) and nickel(II) were studied.IntroductionThe demand for platinum group metals (PGM’s) has risen in the last five years expected to keep in rising. Right now, the demand is already beyond the supply. The primary use of PGM’s today is in the automotive industry. Catalytic converters used in the PGM’s process to reduce greenhouse gases. Because of the current demand to reduce the green house effect the expected need for platinum is here stay. Country’s now advancing in the use of car production also are phasing increasing the needs for this metal. Chemical processing also use it, too. These industries account for more than 50% of all platinum production. Jewelry is other primary use of this precious metal whose value is much greater than gold. Other uses include computer data storage, scientific developments, fuel cell technology and in the glass manufacturing processes."

To improve value metals recovery, a new operating concept for the Inco flash furnace was investigated, in which the flash furnace coke addition practice would aim at establishing a reducing barrier on the surface of the molten bath. The descending partially oxidized sulfide mineral particles would reach the supernatant coke layer prior to the formation of slag. The key for success depends on the effectiveness of the coke layer to produce a sulfur deficient matte while maintaining furnace production capacity. The mechanism and rate of carbon reduction of the phases formed in the flash flame, i.e. sulfide (matte) and oxysulfide was investigated by means of crucible graphite reduction test work. The objective of these tests was to measure the rate of solid graphite reduction of matte, oxysulfide, slag, and matte+slag mixture at different temperatures. These tests were expected to permit understanding and explaining the reduction mechanism of each material by comparing the respective reaction rates, product reaction gas compositions, reduced material assays, and other relevant parameters. Direct visual inspection of the test crucibles would provide additional information.

A comprehensive three-dimensional two-phase mathematical model was developed to represent a channel type reactor with intense bottom gas agitation. Tracer dispersion and particle tracing methods were used to conduct the analysis based on the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Different operational parameters, such is gas volume flow rate. bubbler separation aspect ratios and liquid Input flow rates, were investigated for the purpose of reactor optimization. The numerical calculations were compared with experimental results obtained at the University of Missouri and a good general agreement was observed. Relatively low longitudinal mixing was observed characterizing the system as a "plug-flow" type reactor, in contrast to the intense vertical mixing, under the conditions investigated. Some general mixing characteristics are also discussed In connection to the behavior of other metallurgical reactors.

"The removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from coking wastewater was experimentally investigated using a three-dimensional electrode reactor. The experimental results showed that the refractory organics in coking wastewater can be effectively removed by this process, and COD removal efficiency was affected by the operating parameters, such as electrolytic retention time, particle electrode dosage, initial pH, current density, aeration amount and electrical conductivity. The experimental results show that the three-dimensional electrode could have a COD removal efficiency of more than 60% and a running cost of no more than 6 YUAN (RMB)/t. This indicates the great potential of a three-dimensional electrode reactor in engineering applications as an advanced treatment methods for coking wastewater.IntroductionCoking wastewater is generated from coal coking, coal gas purification, and by-product recovery processes of coking; it is composed of phenolic compounds, heterocyclic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ammonia, cyanide, polycyclic nitrogen-containing aromatics, acyclic compounds, etc. Most of these constituents are refractory, poorly biodegradabile, toxic and carcinogenic [1-3]. Currently, coking wastewater is usually treated by different forms of A/O biological nitrogen removal processes as the primary treatment means, but the aforementioned processes are not efficient enough to meet the requirements of the National Discharge Standard in China (GB13456-1992). According to the continuous requirement on improving environmental protection for the coking industry (revised 2008), increasing wastewater utilization ratios and reducing the discharge of effluent in the coke industry have to be implemented for cleaner production and sustainable development. Therefore, advanced technologies need to be developed to treat coking wastewater and reutilize the product as industrial cooling water, which would be one of the best choices to achieve zero discharge of wastewater and reduce water consumption per ton of steel produced. In this study, a three-dimensional fluidized bed electrode reactor was adopted for the advanced treatment of coking wastewater, and the effects of operating conditions, including particle dosage, initial pH, current density, supporting electrolyte, as well as aeration amount on the COD removal rate, were investigated. Its running costs were also estimated."

"Spent potlining is unavoidable solid waste from aluminum smelters. About thirty kilograms spent potlining is discharged in China to produce per ton primary aluminum. Spent potlining has high level soluble fluorides and cyanides so that it brings heavy pollution to environment. It is prohibited to keep a large amount of spent potlining in open air because it will lead concentrated pollution to local soil and water source due to hydrated reactions between spent potlining and rain water/moisture in air. Landfill may solve pollution of spent potlining provisionally, but it is difficult to be accepted by aluminum smelters because of its high investment, troublesome monitoring and perennial maintenance. Detoxifying of spent potlining not only can remove deleterious fluorides and cyanides in SPL, but also can make fluorides in SPL recycle and return to aluminum electrolysis cells, at the same time benign SPL solid residue can be recycled and ready for cement production.IntroductionChina became the largest primary aluminum manufacturer in 2001. In the past few years, its aluminum output increased by twentyfive percent every year and reached 12.56 million metric tons in 2007. The whole world was very surprised and focused attention upon Chinese aluminum industry. It is more and more important to keep sustainable and steady development with the rapid development of Chinese economy. Aluminum industry is an important base industry and does a great contribution to Chinese economy. But aluminum industry is high energy-consumption and heavy-pollution industry. The government has paid more attention to aluminum industry in recent years. Nowadays the bothersome problem which counterworks Chinese aluminum industry is pollution from solid wastes. Main Solid wastes from aluminum industry are red mud from alumina refineries and spent potlining (short as SPL) from aluminum smelters. Spent potlining are waste lining materials from aluminum electrolysis cells. During production of aluminum, due to reactions between melted electrolyzer and pot lining as well as penetrating of fluorides into pot lining, newly-formed compounds inlayed in pot lining, destroyed the lining structure and brought pot lining cracking. Melt rushed out of lining cracks, cells have to be stopped running and ready for heavy repair. Cell life generally varies from 1500 to 2000 days. Spent potling is an unavoidable solid waste from aluminum industry."

"The main goal of the present work is the quality improvement of the recycled aggregates produced by a construction and demolition waste (C&DW) recycling facility located in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal. The recycling process was developed on a pilot plant scale with 50 t/h of capacity. Process operations are the hammer mill comminution, magnetic separation and screening.In order to improve the knowledge on the C&DW, a characterization procedure was implemented by hand-sorting, magnetic and density separation on representative samples. On the other hand, to improve the quality of the produced aggregates, the bar screen size fractions were analysed, according to the Portuguese Standard (NP EN 933-1 2000).Wood was identified as the critical contaminant, representing 17% by weight of the total contaminants. Sieving results showed that about 97%, 76%, 56%, 98% and 57% were on the correct size range, which lower results are probably due to the type of screens and/or the material characteristics of the recycled aggregates.IntroductionThe construction and demolition waste problemConstruction and demolition waste (C&DW) is generated by the construction activity, resulting from both, buildings or other structures construction and old structures demolition. As a reference, it can be told that C&DW comprises about 40 to 50% of rubbish (concrete, asphalt, bricks, blocks and dirt), 20 to 30% of wood and related products and 20 to 30% of miscellaneous wastes [1]. In Portugal, C&DW is classified in the LER (Portuguese nick name for the European Waste List), Chapter 17, and includes a diversity of wastes, like concrete, bricks, ceramics, bricks, wood, glass, plaster, copper, zinc, lead, iron, steel, as well as insulation and roofing materials. C&DW stream has several characteristics which make it particularly difficult to deal with and are summarized in the following five items.(1) Lack of information on quantities generated: In Portugal, the C&DW sector has been neglected over the past years, which meant that there are not consistent information concerning the quantities and composition of these wastes yet. Several estimates, based in different assumptions, indicate different results, which may vary from 219 Mt to 10 931 Mt [2]."

Today, copper production from direct leaching of oxidized copper ores followed by solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) accounts for about 15% of the total primary world output. SX-EW is a well-accepted process with an operating cost in the range 16-20 cents/lb. copper for small and medium size plants, depending on the plant size and local conditions. However, this technology presents some drawbacks that affect the operating cost and cause environmental concerns. ENGITEC and Paques Bio Systems have developed a new process that avoids the solvent extraction step and operates the copper electrowinning step at a lower cell voltage because of the depassivation of the anodic reaction. The consequence of this new concept is that the direct operating cost is in the range 10-12 cents/lb. copper. This new process is composed of the following steps: ? Selective precipitation of copper from leach solutions by biogenic H2S, yielding CuS and regenerating acid ? Leaching of the CuS with a ferric fluoborate solution to dissolve copper and produce elemental sulphur that is recycled back to the H2S biogeneration step ? Electrowinning of copper fluoborate solution in a diaphragm cell with the ECUPREX® Process, producing copper cathodes and regenerating the ferric fluoborate solution to be recycled back to the leaching step ? Biogeneration of H2S from the elemental: sulphur generated during the leaching step, with the nutrient source for the anaerobic bacteria selected form a wide range of organic substances and/or some industrial by-products containing carbon and hydrogen This paper describes all process steps with particular reference to the biological H2S generation technology. Also discussed' is the capability of the ECUPREX® Process to treat copper sulphide concentrates and copper matte.

"The METTOP-BRX-Technology is a novel manifold electrolyte inlet, which allows improved productivity and production in new and existing tankhouses by achieving higher current efficiency and cathode quality, as well as using current densities higher than 400 A/m2. Two installation examples are shown: Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, Brixlegg, Austria (upgrade of existing tankhouse) and Xiangguang Copper, Yanggu, China (new tank house). Montanwerke Brixlegg AG has been using the METTOP-BRX-Technology since 2005, and converted half of the whole tankhouse to METTOP-BRX in 2011 in order to use a current density of more than 400 A/m2. Xiangguang Copper started up their second tankhouse in May 2011. This tankhouse was constructed in the same way as the existing tankhouse, but was designed for 292,000 t/a cathode copper (existing tankhouse: 200,000 t/a) by using the METTOP-BRX-Technology. This production increase is a consequence of a much higher current density, namely 410 A/m2, compared to 280 A/m2 in the old tankhouse.IntroductionCopper electrorefining has been practised for more than hundred years, the last big change being the implementation of stainless steel cathodes in the 1980s [1], In 2005, the METTOP-BRXTechnology was first introduced. This technology was developed jointly by METTOP and Montanwerke Brixlegg, Austria, and allows improvements in productivity and production in new and existing tankhouses in an economic way. "Classical thermodynamic analysis of any thermal and chemical process is usually based on the first law of thermodynamics. Such an approach is not sufficient when deeper understanding of the nature of each elementary process is required. The use of the first and second law of thermodynamics together is necessary to solve practical process more effectively. Enthalpy and exergy balances allow to enhance our understanding of thermal processes especially when cumulative consumption of energy and exergy is calculated. To ensure reliability of such an analysis the least squares method for adjustment of mass balances of principal chemical elements has been applied and described in detail. Numerical analysis has been carried out to compare two different processes of copper production – shaft furnace and flash smelting.IntroductionClassical thermodynamic analysis of any technological process is usually based on the First Law of Thermodynamics in the form of energy (enthalpy) balances. Such an approach is useful in engineering practice as it makes analysis easier in the global scale neglecting modeling of the elementary processes, allows calculation of the thermal efficiency and makes possible to control quality of the measurement results. Additionally, graphical presentation of the energy balance is simple in the form of Sankey diagram.In the case of aluminum electrolysis process, design of the new electrolyzer or its modernization is always based on the enthalpy balance.However, deeper thermodynamic analysis leads to the conclusion that such an approach is not sufficient. The First Law of Thermodynamics guarantees the exact equivalence of the various forms of energy (allowing all forms to be measured in the common unit such as joules) but it does not guarantee interconversibility. Thermal energy (heat) is in a peculiar and unique position, for whereas all other forms can be completely converted into thermal energy, the reverse process id impossible, only a portion of the heat can be converted into mechanical energy. Explanation comes from application of exergy balances. As we know exergy expresses the amount of mechanical work necessary to produce a material in its specified state from components common in the natural environment, in a reversible way, heat being exchanged only with environment [1]. Consumption of exergy connected with the fabrication of some considered product appears not only in the plant manufacturing the product, but also in all plants delivering raw materials for the final production process"
