Gold mineralisation in the gabbro sills is mainly stratabound to quartz- and Fe-rich, granophyric-textured units and is sited in undeformed, brittle quartz vein sets, which form pipe-like orebodies. Hydrothermal wallrock alteration consists of hornblende-plagioclase-calcite-quartz with minor biotite, garnet and chlorite and with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as the dominant sulphides. Geothermobarometric data suggest that gold was deposited at around 520 degrees C at 2.8-3.8 bar. Mineralisation is thought to have occurred during amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Fluid inclusion and isotope data indicate that gold mineralisation was the result of deposition from a low-salinity H2O-CO2-CH4 fluid of either metamorphic or magmatic origin. Although the Three Mile Hill deposit differs from others in the area in its wallrock-alteration assemblages, peak-metamorphic timing of gold deposition and distinct geochemical associations it forms a brittle stratabound ore body which suggests structural and gold-depositional mechanisms in common with those of the other gabbro-hosted gold deposits

A method is described whereby the behavior of the front is approximated when gas is injected into a thick reservoir having reasonably homogeneous properties. The method is applied to the Abqaiq field of Saudi Arabia. The producing member is the Arab-D, a high-permeability calcarenite which has no continuous betlding planes. Field performance indicates the injected gas to be partially miscible with the reservoir oil because gas volume factors experienced are lower than those predicted by the gas law. Eqlrilibril~m calculations confirnz ihis and also show that the volume factor may vary appreciably, depending on the relative quantities of oil and gas in contact in the reservoir; consequently, volutnetric balances are made for the purpose of determining the behavior of the gas volume factor during injection history. The effect of gravity segregation on position and shape of the gas front is approximated by dividing the producing section into three zones vertically and tracing the movement of the average interface in each zone, with counterflow of oil and gas taking place betweell zones behind the front. This results in a gas front that advances more rapidly along the top of [he formation than along the base, producing an "umbrella" effect in cross section that becomes more pronounced as the front progresses. The calculations cover the gas-injection period of Abqaiq field history through 1958, and the position of the gas front is plotted at one-year intervals. Finally, some comparisotls between the calcrlated fronial position and the gas-oil contact as Measured by neutron logs are made. INTRODUCTION Fig. 1 is a structure contour map of the Abqaiq field. For analytical purpcses, the field has been divided into two areas designated A and B, as shown on the map. Gas injection into Area A was begun in early 1954 into two wells located near the crest of the structure on the north-south axis of the anticline. During the period covered by this paper, the average injection rate has been 122 MMscf/D with a maximum sustained rate of 160 MMscf/D. The reservoir pressure has been maintained at 2,450 psig since start of gas injection. The reservoir originally was undersaturated but, prior to pressure maintenance, the pressure was drawn below the bubble point in most of the Area A section, creating an in-place free-gas saturation of 8 per cent at the crest of the structure. The average critical gas saturation is 13 per cent established by laboratcry core tests. That the entire reservoir remained below critical gas saturation prior to gas injection is borne out by the fact that none of the crestal wells have exhibited high gas-oil ratios during production history. The Area A reservoir is a carbonate section about 200-ft thick having average porosity and permeability of the order of 22 per cent and 500 md, respectively. What are future prospects for U.S. mining? In many quarters the assumption is made that this country has passed its zenith as a mineral producer -- that it is in a period of decline and that it is becoming a have-not nation like Japan and much of Western Europe. These industrial rivals of ours must depend almost entirely on others for their mineral supplies. In trying to answer this question one must of course distinguish between resources and productive capacity. In today's volatile and competitive markets, the definition of what are reserves and what are merely identified resources becomes ever more difficult. Many large deposits have been found that are unlikely to be viable in the marketplace under normal conditions but that can be of significance to the nation's military and industrial security in times of emergency. I should like to draw on personal experience from World War I1 for illustration. 4fter Pearl Harbor great concern developed over the availability of a long 1ist of strategic materials for which this country was largely dependent on imports. Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. "SummaryIn the Port of Naples a slurry wall has been realized through a sandy layer up to a deep tuff layer using the Cutting Soil Mixing technique.The executed panels have dimensions of 2.8 m x0.65 m in plan and a total length of 25 m. Primary and secondary panels have been executed using the wet to wet technique. During the panels execution the following parameters had been measured: injection pressure, injected volume, verticality. At the end of the works an exploratory campaign has been carried out through boreholes collecting samples for laboratory tests in order to verify the diaphragm thickness and its physical and mechanical properties (i.e. unit weight, unconfined compressive strength).The interpretation of the collected data allowed to verify the efficiency of the method, the volume of slurry loss due to permeation during the panels execution, the quantity of the obtained spoil compared to the volume balance equation, both for the sand and the tuff layer.Eventually, the measured physical and mechanical characteristics of the panels have been correlated to the execution method performed.IntroductionIn the Naples Port area there is a polluted site which has to be hydraulically isolated in order to prevent the pollution of the groundwater that flows from land to the sea through the Port area. A hydraulic cut-off wall has to be realized and particularly a slurry-wall realized using the CSM method had been executed.To date, two stretches have been executed, 140 an 110 m in length respectively, as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.After execution, the slurry-walls have been investigated with boreholes. In-situ and laboratory tests on the recovered samples of grout have been carried out; furthermore, the geotechnical parameters of the mix composing the wall have been measured."

One understudied area of environmental law is the socio-ecological impact of ownerless mines. This impact is particularly pronounced in resource-dependent regions like South Africa and Western Australia, creating significant rehabilitation challenges. This article hypothesises that effectively managed financial provision could be valuable for rehabilitating legacy mines. Using a qualitative, comparative methodology, the article analyses the financial provisions for mine rehabilitation in South Africa and Western Australia, focusing on statutory provisions, funding mechanisms, and rehabilitation outcomes. Key themes, such as context, measures, and outcomes, are explored to assess the effectiveness of each financial model. Purposive sampling is used to select case studies from both regions, and thematic analysis is applied to interpret the data. The analysis highlights the financial rehabilitation measures in both regions, providing a structured framework for ownerless mine rehabilitation. South Africa's approach, guided by the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) of 2002, depends on state budget allocations, leading to funding inconsistencies and slow rehabilitation progress. In contrast, Western Australia’s Mine Rehabilitation Fund Act (MRFA) of 2012 uses a levy-based system, ensuring continuous financial support for mine rehabilitation. South Africa's state-dependent model has led to delays in rehabilitating derelict and ownerless mines, while Western Australia’s funding model has facilitated steady progress. The article recommends that South Africa adopt a levy-based financial mechanism, strengthen legislative enforcement, improve financial oversight, and integrate proactive mine closure strategies to accelerate rehabilitation, reduce environmental hazards, and promote sustainable development in mining-affected communities.

Employees and dollars are necessary to all enterprises and any force, such as fire, which destroys either, can bring very serious consequences, including business failure. Since everyone acknowledges the necessity of conserving human life, we will devote most of our paper to the economic factors involved. A coal-mine fire is considerably more difficult to combat than a fire in a surface building because of the combustible surroundings in the mine, the explosive gases emitted from the coal, the suspension of explosive dust when mine timbers burn and the unsupported roof falls, the limited space in which approach to the fire can be made, and the limited avenues of escape. A survey of coal-mine-fire protection indicated that a rather low value was being placed on property and equipment. This prompted comparison with other industries. The comments made in this comparison are not intended as an indictment of the coal industry, since we do have mines that are well protected against fire, but the comments on conditions at the mines visited are factual and may help others to improve similar conditions. SURVEY PROCEDURES Plants of the steel, aluminum, rubber, chemical, and petroleum industries were surveyed, and all facets of the fire-protection scheme were covered. The industrial plant invariably had four times as much water readily available for instant use than the mine. In many mines where water is available, no equipment for applying it is provided, such as hose, nozzles, and adapters, so that time is lost in collecting this equipment. (See Table I.) EXTINGUISHERS Many more and generally larger portable extinpishers are available at the plant as compared to the mine. The extinguishers are generally placed nearer to sources of danger. In addition, respiratory protective equipment is always available at strategic points in plants but only in a few mines. (See Figs. 1 and Table 11) INSPECTING AND TESTING EQUIPMENT Plant water facilities are checked weekly and flushed at 6-month intervals, and hose is pressure-tested at least yearly; some mines check water yearly, but hose is not tested unless used. Fire extinguishers are inspected weekly in plants and completely overhauled yearly; one mine had monthly checks and overhauls only after use. FIRE BRIGADES AND TRAINING Every plant had designated fire-fighters and some complete full-time brigades; at one mine a chief mechanic was designated as being in charge of fires, and other depended entirely upon officials who might not be familiar with the equipment. COST OF FIRES AND PERCENTAGE OF CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN FIRE PROTECTION The direct cost of recent mine fires ranged from $128,000 to $240,000; indirect costs, such as lost tonnage, idled equipment, lost orders, and the like might run the cost to over $500,000. (See Figs. 2 and 3).

Regardless of the advantages of the Friction Stir Process (FSP), for age-hardened aluminum alloys, the mechanical properties such as hardness in the stir zone decreased after FSP due to the growth or dissolution of strengthening precipitates. Here, as a new technique, FSP was introduced to alloy copper nanopowders in Al7075 T651. Mechanical properties of copper nanopowder- alloyed Al7075 T651 together with micro and nanostructures were compared with those of as-FSPed Al7075 T651 using SEM, TEM, and Vickers hardness testing to understand structure-property relationships. It was observed that Vickers hardness of the stir zone in copper nanopowder alloyed Al7075 T651 increased by 20% compared to that of the heat affected zone, while the as-FSPed samples did not show a noticeable increase in hardness in the same zone. Xray mapping showed traces of copper nanopowder after the process. TEM is being used to verify if there was CuAl2 formed in the copper alloyed sample.

THE use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material :st be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, nulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, butt to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits.

In most oil fields, natural gas is the major source of energy causing flow of oil to the well. The amount of gas produced With the oil generally exceeds actual energy requirements, so that in time the gas reserve of the field becomes seriously depleted and the oil production nest be stimulated by some auxiliary means. One of these is to repressure the oil formation with natural gas; or, where a gas supply is not available, often air is used. Although air is a cheap and convenient repressuring medium, its use sometimes is attended with several disadvantages. First, the return air-gas mixture decreases rapidly in fuel value, often until it can be used no longer as a source of power. At the same time, explosive mixtures may result if recycling is used, causing hazards to life and equipment. Second, some fields experience considerable trouble with the formation of emulsions which become increasingly difficult to treat. Although there is no definite proof that air repressuring always causes these emulsions, many operators are convinced that this is the case.

"Process control technology holds very significant potential benefits for many mineral and coal processing plants. The impact can be expected in terms of performance improvements (e.g. increased throughput, better quality control, higher availability), through reduced operating costs (e.g. lower reagent consumptions, manpower reductions) and in the form of intangibles (e.g. reduced vulnerability to manpower turnover, increased productivity in the user group). However, the installation of a process control system will represent considerable capital expenditure and will generate an operating cost. No management team would approve the funding for such a project without some reasonable measure(s) of the profitability of a proposed system. This paper describes a methodology for addressing the justification problem. Of particular interest is the approach to quantifying performance improvements, frequently found to be the predominant benefit of process control.INTROPUCTIONProcess control has become widely recognized as an essential component of any processing operation. It has direct impact on productivity, process efficiency and product marketability. The reported pay backs associated with successful installations underscore this observation. As a consequence, many operators who have little in the way of process automation are looking to initiate control projects, while those who currently enjoy some level of automation are looking to upgrade existing control systems (= process + instrumentation + hardware + software + operators + support). While the emphasis here would appear to be on retrofit process control projects, new plants, or those currently in the design stage, will usually find themselves in one of these categories shortly after startup 1."

This paper describes the application of a cable disc elevator to continuous lift ore vertically from underground mines. Application of this system requires the tensions developed within the cable must remain within the carrying capacity of the cable including applicable safety margins. A critical element occurs at starting the system when it is fully loaded which requires the force developed by the system to exceed the static friction forces. This paper describes the laboratory rig developed to investigate the static friction forces. Details of the results of tests on three different ores for both dry and wet conditions are given. These results are discussed.

Furthermore, the published reports of the Bureau on subjects pertaining to petroleum and natural-gas technology come to the direct attention of a relatively large number of persons, whose interest in results and appreciation of the value of this type of work have caused them to be kept currently informed regarding available data.

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

Lime is one of the most extensively used chemicals in industry. Other than sulfuric acid, it is used in greater quantities than any other man-made industrial chemical. In 1974 there were 20,368,000 tons of lime used in the United States, which amounts to approximately 190 pounds for each man, woman and child in our nation. Lime also is perhaps the most diversely used of any industrial chemical. It is used in such areas as pharmaceutical, chemical, steel making, glass making, production of copper and aluminum, sugar refining, agriculture, construction, ecological endeavors, potable water treatment and sanitation. Figure I lists the major uses of lime for 1974, which is the latest year for which this data is available. The impact of the use of lime for ecological reasons did not show up to any appreciable extent in 1974, but we expect this to be a significant factor within the next few years. Fortunately, in the United States and also in most of the world, there are many deposits of high quality limestone available for the production of hood quality lime. For this discussion, we will assure that a limestone of a suitable quality and size consist will be available in a storage bin or stockpile near the kiln. Quality requirements for the lime product will be covered. We also will give a brief description of the three most popular types of lime calcining systems, how they function, and expected lime product quality from each of these. Commercial fuels and major accessory equipment will be discussed briefly.

Although theoretical and conceptual knowledge regarding the impact of horizontal stress on underground coal mining excavations have existed since at least the mid-1900s, it wasn?t until the late 1970?s that the theory and practical understanding began to mesh. Since that time, particularly over the last 25 years of this Conference, increased empirical study, as well as advances in measurement technology, computer simulation, and bolt design, has significantly improved our understanding of horizontal stress impact, and provided coal mine operators with tools to reliably predict and manage it. This paper provides a retrospective review of some of the more important horizontal stress-related advancements made during the 25 years of Conference proceedings, particularly those for predicting and controlling horizontal stress impacts within underground coal mines. Relevant and significant CONSOL experiences and studies will be presented in context, with particular attention to horizontal stress considerations for longwall faces and gateroads. The significance of horizontal stress will also be placed in context with respect to local geology and structure, ground support measures, and mining configuration, method, and sequence.

The abstract highlights the increasing use of mobile equipment in mining and its contribution to accidents. The research analyzes injury narratives from Ghanaian surface gold mines to understand the involvement of mobile mining equipment in injuries and explore the use of injury narrative data as a human factors tool. The study identified priority human factor issues, such as operating mobile mining equipment, part removal/installation, and the operator's cabin. The use of Sankey diagrams for multivariable analysis effectively identified specific operator-centered issues that warrant further investigation for improved safety interventions.
