Control of flotation processes is mostly managed by plant operators, who assess the performance of the plant based on their own experience and other heuristic rules. These rules tend to be subjective or ill-defined, since most of them are concerned with the structure of the flotation froth, such as colour, bubble size and shape distributions, froth mobility and froth stability. These phenomena are very difficult to quantify objectively, and inexperience on the part of the operators, human error, etc., can lead to significant inefficiencies in plant operation. In this paper the development of a fuzzy system to support the control decisions of plant operators is described, which leads to significantly smoother control action and more stable plant operation than could be obtained with crisp sets of rules or manual control strategies. The LaModel program has been used successfully in the United States for many years to design pillars to ensure global stability of pillar recovery operations. However, the recent Crandall Canyon Mine collapse showed that further research was required to improve the design of pillar recovery under deep cover. Toward this end, a new calibration procedure was implemented in LaModel. This calibration procedure prescribes techniques for calibrating the critical LaModel input parameters based on empirical abutment loading and pillar strength, as utilized in the time-tested ALPS and ARMPS programs. The calibration procedure is intended to help guide a novice modeler in choosing calibrated input parameters that produce a standard model that fits within the verification database. However, the rigid parameter specification incorporated in the calibration procedure also removes most of the flexibility in LaModel for specific calibration to the unique conditions at a given mine site. In this paper, a number of the LaModel input parameters are varied outside the bounds of the suggested calibration and the effects on the model results are analyzed. Ultimately, it is shown how the LaModel user might vary certain input parameters to adjust the model to site-specific conditions, while still maintaining the general accuracy and philosophy of the recommended calibration.

Elandsrand started shotcreting back in 1991. This paper will share the experiences of the mine by looking into the past, the present situation and the way Elandsrand plans to approach the future. It looks at the application of drycrete and discusses the factors that led to the introduction of wet fibre reinforced shotcrete. The logistical constraints of getting shotcrete material underground will be solved by the development of an underground batch plant, using run of mine waste rock as an aggregate.

Anglo Platinum has initiated a project to investigate hydraulic hoisting technology for platinum mines. Hydraulic hoisting systems are categorized as pumping, fluidizing feeder or displacement feeder systems. Positive displacement piston diaphragm pumps are most suitable for pumping systems but they require that the ore be milled prior to pumping. Fluidizing feeders are unsuitable for platinum ore applications due to the large percentage of fines in the ore. The three-chamber pipe displacement feeder has been most widely used for hydraulic hoisting and is the most suitable technology for platinum mines. Eight hydraulic hoisting applications covering pumping and displacement feeder technologies are reviewed. The key factors to be assessed in selecting a hydraulic hoisting system for a platinum mine are discussed. A typical platinum mine configuration will comprise an ore preparation plant (to produce -15mm material through screening or crushing), motive water pump on surface, high pressure water pipeline from surface to underground, ore slurrification plant, three-chamber displacement feeder, and a high pressure slurry pipeline to surface. The water and slurry pipelines are housed in a purpose drilled borehole. A hydraulic hoisting system selection chart is presented. A 150mm diameter system with a 25 MPa pressure rating is required to hoist 60 000 t/m from a depth of 1 200 m. Generic capital and operating costs are presented. A major potential advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the fines, which contain a high percentage of PGMs, are captured underground and transported directly to the concentrator. Hydraulic hoisting technology is ideally suited to providing supplementary hoisting capacity to existing shafts that have reached the skip hoisting capacity limit. The main advantage for new shafts is the potential to significantly simplify underground rock handling and transportation. All hydraulic hoisting system components are proven. The only risk area is the wear rates of the valves and piping. Current estimates are based on gold ore. The business cases investigated show that the financial viability of the installations are not sensitive to wear rate. To help insure the continued viability of the minerals and materials sector of the U.S. economy, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research and disseminating technology that will result in more efficient minerals extraction. As part of this effort, a process is being investigated that involves an aqueous chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure to treat complex sulfide concentrates to produce ZnCl2. Subsequent fused-salt electrolysis of the ZnCI2 produces high-purity zinc metal. Previous reports described preliminary, small-scale research on the chlorine-oxygen leaching system and fused-salt electrolysis of ZnCl2. This report discusses the details of design, construction, and longterm, continuous operation of both monopolar and bipolar fused-salt cells. The effects of temperature, electrode gap, current density, electrolyte composition, and electrode configuration on current efficiency and energy consumption were determined for a ZnCl2-KC1-NaCl electrolyte system. Zinc metal was produced at the rate of about 50 lb/day in a monopolar cell which was operated continuously for 60 days with current efficiencies from 85.8 to 98.6 pct and an average power consumption of 2.1 kwhr/lb. Bipolar cells with several different electrode configurations were operated for 90 days. A current efficiency of about 70 pct and power consumption of about 1.7 kwhr/lb of zinc were achieved using a three-electrode-pair, bipolar assembly with a chlorine gas lift pump to circulate electrolyte.

In 1984, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 8,500 acres of the 20,250-acre Seven Blackfoot Wilderness Study Area (WSA) consisting of all 3,950 acres of MT-024-657A and 4,550 acres of the 4,850 acre MT-024-657B in order to evaluate the mineral resources. Within this report these 8,500 acres are referred to as the study area. Located about 30 miles northwest of Jordan, MT, the study area is underlain by outcrops of Quaternary alluvium and Cretaceous to Paleocene sandstones, shales, clays, and coal. No mines or prospects were found in the study area. Except for some current interest in petroleum and natural gas, there has been no mineral exploration activity in the study area. The study area contains subeconomic clay, placer gold, and coal. Land within the study area is leased or under lease application for oil and gas.

The field tests involved ten coal mines in which transients were initiated on the dc system from which the parameters of the dc mine electrical power system could be determined. The data processing involved the use of a Fourier Analyzer to filter noise and fit an exponential curve to the field waveforms. From this data analysis it was possible to find the dc system resistance, inductance and time constant. The survey of nationally recognized laboratories was conducted to establish that the recommended test criteria were practical. The development of test criteria for dc fuses used in mines was based on the measurement of parameters in the field, the survey of testing laboratories, literature searches, laboratory test, etc. A computer program was written to analytically predict the parameters measured in the field. This approach has limitations but reasonable agreement with field results was obtained. A brief laboratory testing program was carried out to verify the practicality of the recommended criteria and establish the accuracy of the conclusions concerning dc fuse performance.

Subduction zone magmatism is a direct response to tectonic and chemical processes operating at convergent margins. Changes in the tectonic configuration of plate boundaries in SE Asia during the Cenozoic had consequences for the nature and volume of magma produced. Retreat or advance of the trench hinge has probably been an important process in controlling the presence or absence of magmatism in SE Asian subduction zones. This process also provides a means of replenishing the mantle wedge and counteracting the effects of melt extraction in depleting the wedge. Changes in the nature of recycled material and lithologies of the over-riding plate also have the potential to influence the lavas that are erupted in arcs. Several locations in SE Asia have experienced magmatism bearing the geochemical signature of subduction but are remote from coeval subduction zones. Such magmatism requires an earlier period of mantle enrichment by subduction but may result from localised extension. The distribution of such magmatism may provide information of tectonic value. Some adakitic magmatism occurred in tectonic settings where there is no evidence for subduction of young oceanic crust at the time of magma genesis. Slab melting in such settings is not possible and alternative mechanisms are required to explain the occurrence of, at least some, adakitic lavas.

An extensive ferromanganese nodule field south of New Zealand (Fig. 1) has existed beneath the flow of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) and Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) for at least the past 15 m.y. West of 174°E, between 59°S and 48°S, the field is 300-500 km wide, but east of 174°E, where current flow impinges on the eastern slope of the Campbell Plateau, the field narrows from ca. 200 km at 55°S to ca. 120 km at 51°S. This narrowing coincides with deflection of current flow eastwards, and consequent reduction in bottom-current velocity and eddy kinetic energy. Based on sea floor photographs, dredge samples and 3.5 kHz profile data, six distinct seafloor substrates are delineated, forming broadly parallel zones eastwards from the lowermost Campbell Slope (Fig. 2).

The location, features, qualities, and extent of iron occurrences and the associated resources--limestone and dolomite, bentonite, coal-lignite, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water--are evaluated. The results of pioneer beneficiation tests on South Dakota taconite are discussed. In addition, pertinent features of taconite development, cost factors, the Western and Central United States trade area and markets are reported. The State's production of iron ores until 1963 has been small and for purposes other than the manufacture of iron. This investigation disclosed the probability of large resources of taconite in Pennington and Lawrence Counties. The average iron content is 29 percent, and a 65-percent or better iron concentrate might be produced. Ample resources are available for mining and processing taconite. An investment of at least $26 million would be required for a plant capable of turning out 1 million tons of agglomerated iron concentrate per year. The feasibility of such an enterprise is indicated, but intensive investigation and research must be completed to justify such an investment.

The City of Alexandria, Virginia, Public Safety Center (PSC) is a 64,000 square foot facility that houses the Police Department, Office of Sheriff and the Office of Magistrate. In addition, the center includes a detention facility for local and federal inmates, operated by the Sheriff. The PSC is composed of a 3-story building to the west and a 6-story building to the east constructed on a landfill in a wetland area in the flood plains of hunting Creek. The existing ground floor of the 3-story building is a floating slab-on-grade, with the interior and exterior columns, exterior walls and upper floors all supported on belled, drilled shafts. Portions of the floating first floor slab have undergone excessive settlement due to the apparent consolidation of the underlying organic soils. The magnitude of the settlements of the floating first floor slab is sufficient to require replacement of the slab and relocation of a portion of the facility. The rehabilitation was complex and required staged construction, consisting of constructing Auger Pressure Grouted (APG) Piles in low overhead conditions. This paper summarizes the geotechnical conditions that lead to the excessive settlement of the floor slab, the construction of the (APG) Pile foundations in low overhead conditions and the evaluation of potential future settlements.

During the later part of 2007 I was lucky enough to visit the Atlas Copco facilities in Sweden, and to see first hand what a large and diverse company Atlas Copco is. The reason this paper calls the Atlas Copco experience a bonanza is that it means a source of great and sudden wealth or luck; a spectacular windfall or a rich mass of ore, as found in mining. I think this aptly describes the scholarship as it has greatly increased my wealth of knowledge of the mining industry. This paper intends to encourage all those eligible to apply for this fantastic scholarship opportunity, and seeks to thank all those involved who made this scholarship the amazing experience that it was. Atlas Copco produces most of its Swedish products in the town of +rebro, and it was here that I spent most of my time, visiting the Underground Rock Excavation group, the Surface Mining Equipment group and Rocktec. I also travelled around Sweden and was able to visit one of OricaÆs manufacturing plants, the Secoroc groupÆs manufacturing plant, the Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration group as well as being fortunate enough to visit the LKAB mine in the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The trip was not all information on Atlas Copco products and services however; I was able to go to the Ice Hotel in JukkasjSrvi and drink Absolut Vodka out of ice glasses, go on a reindeer safari (as well as eat them!), sample the fine meat from a moose, drink local schnapps, attend the Atlas Copco Christmas party, wander around the wonderful city of Stockholm and generally immerse myself in the great Swedish culture.

AS a new departure the annual business meeting was held at 4 p. m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16, instead of in the morning, as previously. The retiring President, Robert E. Tally, called the meeting to order and briefly spoke of the large measure of success that had been attained in balancing the budget of the Institute in 1931, so that, although receipts had declined over $26,000 compared to the previous year, expenditures had come within $3,000 of income. He referred in complimentary ,terms to the work of the committees on Membership, Admissions, Papers and Publications, and MINING AND METALLURGY, from which more would be heard late:. He also announced that a large and important committee on economics has been under consideration, and will be announced later. As an evidence of growth it was noted that a new Division, Mineral Industry Education, had been organized just an hour previously.

In 1988, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 12,740-acre Blue Canyon Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-073) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is in Malheur County, OR, about 27 miles northwest of Jordan Valley. The study area is underlain by Tertiary welded tuff, tuff, perlite and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks capped by basalt. Jasper has been mined from several localities. Some mining has been done by hobbyists. However, the area has been covered by mining claims since 1964, with mining done by commercial operators. This region has been a source of "Owyhee picture" and other similar jaspers. More recent exploration has focused on the gold potential of nearby areas such as Quartz Mountain and Red Butte.

"A hybrid Deep Mixing (DM) shoring system was recently constructed for a high-rise development in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for the temporary support of a five-level basement excavation. The site is bounded by an existing bridge off-ramp structure along its longest side and by city streets on the other two sides, which formed a truncated triangle in plan. A conventional secant pile wall was installed along the longest side, about 380 ft (116 m) in length, of the site. Hybrid shoring walls (HSW) 1 and 2 were installed along two shorter sides with each being 235 to 246 ft (72 to 75 m) long. HSW 3 completed the excavation support system along the shortest side with a length of about 55 ft (17 m). Cutter soil mixing (CSM) was proposed by the excavation and shoring design-build team in lieu of conventional secant piling. CSM was the preferred method to construct the infill panels between soldier piles because of the speed at which the shoring system could be constructed in the variable fill, peat, wood waste and overburden. Design ConsiderationsTo minimize the impact on buried utilities along the outside perimeter of the excavation, the temporary shoring was designed to limit the lateral displacements to less than 0.8 in (20 mm). Factors taken into consideration for shoring design included the lateral earth pressures from the fill and native soils, groundwater pressures, temporary construction loads (e.g., crane or heavy plant/equipment), and permanent structural requirements. The subsurface conditions at this site typically consisted of fill (cohesive and granular), overlying peat and/or wood waste, overlying clayey silt to sandy silt, overlying weathered to dense to very dense clayey silt till to sandy silt till with silt layers. Localized, perched groundwater was observed within the fill, peat, wood waste and sandy silt layers above the dense till."

"Huge amounts of air pollution scrubber sludge have been generated during ferromanganese production using blast furnace. These residues have been historically deposited in ponds near steel making plants. They are very rich in zinc, manganese and lead (5 to 40 %) and also contain aluminum and iron. Considering the market value of these metals, brownfield sites can now be used as secondary resources. These ponds also have to be cleaned up to meet the environmental regulations.We have developed a hydrometallurgical process to recover Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce valuable compounds of Mn and Zn and recover the final Pb residue by pyrometallurgy. The Zn and Mn compounds need to be pure enough to be economically valuable. Batch laboratory tests were carried out to determine suitable selective leaching conditions. The investigated operating conditions were acid concentration, pulp density and temperature. Optimal conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (95.9 %) were found using sulfuric acid and sodium metabisulfide. The final residue contained 14.8 to 23.8 % of Pb. Then, Zn was recovered in the form of ZnO or ZnS by precipitation and Zn metal by electrowinning, while Mn was recovered as MnCO3 with a fairly acceptable concentration of impurities.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese has been produced by pyrometallurgy in much of Western Europe for centuries. Use of wet scrubber to remove pollutant and dust particles from gas stream was common for most of these operations. Those residues contain high concentration of Zn, Mn and Pb. They have been left to decant in settling ponds installed close to the steel production plants. They now constitute heavily contaminated artificial soils. Those sludges are so contaminated with Zn, Mn and Pb that they can be used for metal production. Currently, no method is available to decontaminate these residues and recover Zn, Mn and Pb. Therefore, an approach considering these brownfield sites as secondary resource is in development. Doing so would achieve two goals, decontaminate the site and produce metals.. Cyanide destruction by Caro’s acid is one process commonly employed by gold operations to meet regulatory requirements and/or the International Cyanide Management Code compliance for weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide in cyanidation tails or waste water from such operations. Typically smallscale bench tests to evaluate and assess the suitability of the Caro’s acid destruction process are conducted. Additionally, the experimental procedure used during these preliminary investigations may also differ from that implemented at the full-scale. This paper presents the results from a fundamental investigation of the Caro’s acid process to establish a more detailed understanding of the impact that the experimental procedure has on the destruction of cyanide. In particular, it was found that the control of pH was important to avoid copper(I) cyanide precipitation at low pH and maximise WAD cyanide destruction. Residual peroxide in the preparation of Caro’s acid has the potential for subsequent cyanide destruction and could be exploited.

From 2015 to 2021, five massive pillar collapses occurred at four underground stone mines in the eastern USA. These events resulted in powerful airblasts that damaged mine infrastructure and mobile equipment, seriously injured miners, and disrupted underground travelways. Each of these pillar collapses propagated through the overlying strata, causing a subsidence sinkhole on the surface. Pillar collapses are particularly hazardous for miners because they can occur with little warning and can affect miners that are far from the pillar collapse area. The following case studies show that certain factors may increase the likelihood of a pillar collapse. For instance, each of the 5 events involved at least 12 benched pillars with width-to-height ratios (w/h) of 0.8 or less. This study elaborates on these factors and proposes a framework to assist mine operators where they identify similar hazards.
