A new Safety Library Publication (SLP), SLP-27, which is titled “Security in Manufacturing, Transportation, Storage and Use of Commercial Explosives” was recently released by the Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME). SLP-27 makes recommendations for both general security and enhanced security at explosives sites when security risk levels, declared by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) using its Advisory System, have temporarily increased.

Pig iron nuggets, which have similar chemical and physical properties with blast furnace pig iron, were produced by a single step heat treatment of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs. During this single step heat treatment the transformation of self reducing fluxing dried greenballs into pig iron nuggets did not take place instantaneously. Rather, it was composed of three transformation stages, (1) transformation of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs into direct reduced iron (DRI), (2) transformation of DRI into transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and (3) transformation of TDRI into pig iron nuggets. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate these transformation mechanisms by analyzing the transformation stage products. The transformation stage products were produced at a constant furnace temperature of 1425°C and various furnace residence times. They were characterized according to their microstructure, microhardness and apparent density. The changes in the product’s physical and chemical properties with furnace residence time were utilized in understanding the transformation behavior, the chemical events that took place and the controlling mechanisms. It was determined that the transformations were dictated by the changes in the slag viscosity and wetting properties, and by carbon diffusion into metallized areas.

This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards. First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change In coal seam inclination. Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in. diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, production to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. "The lead and zinc flotation circuits at Red Dog Mine are preceded by a preflotation circuit which recovers naturally-floating organic carbon contained in the ore. Organic carbon is a potential contaminant in the lead concentrate and is detrimental to lead-zinc selectivity. Prior to 2007, the Red Dog preflotation circuit consisted of a single stage bank of tank cells which floated the organic carbon. The preflotation concentrate was discarded directly to tailings, however, this stream contained significant amounts of lead and zinc. Zinc loss to preflotation ranged from 2% to 6%, relative to the zinc in the mill feed and was proportional to the amount of organic carbon in the ore. The main mechanism of the zinc loss was entrainment.Pilot plant and modeling testwork were conducted to examine the use of a Jameson Cell to clean the preflotation concentrate. Results indicated that up to 90% of the zinc deporting to preflotation concentrate could be returned to the flotation circuit for recovery. The installation of a 5.4 m Ø Jameson Cell with 18 downcomers was initiated in June 2006. The new preflotation cleaning circuit was commissioned in March 2007. Conservatively, preflotation cleaning has resulted in zinc and lead absolute recovery gains of 1.0% and 1.5%, respectively. The $9.1M project has a payback period of approximately 1 year at current metal prices.INTRODUCTIONRed Dog Preflotation CircuitRed Dog Mine is located above the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska. It is the world’s largest zinc concentrate producer with a production rate of more than 1.0M t/yr. Red Dog is operated by Teck Cominco Alaska Incorporated under an operating agreement with the Northwest Alaska Native Association (NANA). Due to the remote location of the mine, it is accessible only by air, or seasonally, by ocean-going barges.The Red Dog deposit is a rich sedimentary exhalative (sedex) zinc-lead-silver deposit. The major sulphides, in decreasing order of abundance, are sphalerite, pyrite, galena and marcasite. Due to the complex nature of the ore body, run-of-mine ore is blended in stockpiles before being crushed and processed through the concentrator. The average mill feed grade for 2006 was 6.1% lead, 20.6% zinc, 8.0% iron and 0.67 % organic carbon."

Never before have mine managers in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania been so seriously concerned about the rising cost of pumping mine water. Many of them know that future pumping charges may affect their operating profits adversely to an extent that will make it necessary to abandon some mines. Increased pumping charges in the anthracite industry are currently comparable in importance with higher mining costs; in fact, profitable operation of some mines depends not only upon the cost of mining coal but also upon whether they can be kept free from water at reasonable cost. Pumping charges are relatively low during the early development of a mine, but they increase rapidly as development progresses. Numerous crop falls, strippings, and. abandoned adjacent properties contribute unfavorably to the volume of water produced during mining. The foregoing conditions and the existence of large underground pools below existing mining levels present water problems of such magnitude and cost that some mine owners cannot continue to operate profitably.

Following the longest Smelter campaign in BCL?s history it was planned to completely rebuild the flash smelting furnace in 1987. This was the fourth major overhaul and the most extensive so far attempted. Detailed planning took place over several year$ preceding the shutdown and implementation was completed in 54 days. The key to minimising shutdown time was the method designed for installation of the new uptake shaft and reaction shaft. Major repair work was also undertaken in the waste heat boiler and electric furnaces. Both of these activities had an impact on the critical path of the flash smelting furnace overhaul.

The CSA Mine is located at Cobar, New South Wales, where it was in continuous operation from 1966 to the time it went into receivership on 29 January 1998. When it closed it was under the ownership of Golden Shamrock. Glencore International, in conjunction with Mt Lyell Mining, undertook a due diligence study to determine the feasibility to re-open the mine. This envisaged operating CSA Mine as a low-cost, copper concentrate producer under the direction of Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL). The new workforce would consist of contractor trades people in operating functions under the co-ordination of CMPL staff, both on the surface and underground. This was the key to establishing the new culture in the workforce. The orebodies at CSA Mine are steeply dipping with copper-lead-zinc mineralisation in zones of strong alterations in a fine-grained siltstone host sequence. The predominant economic minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. The major gauge minerals are pyrrhotite, pyrite, chlorite, sericite and quartz. Ore for the project is being developed and mined from two high grade copper lenses within the QTS North system. Chalcopyrite occurs in two forms. The first consists of coarse chalcopyrite grains in association with pyrrhotite or pyrite. The second form consists of chalcopyrite grains intergrown with pyrrhotite grains. This form of chalcopyrite is quite rare. It allows electrochemical interactions between grains, resulting in rapid oxidation of the chalcopyrite surface. Physically this ore looks like, and has been mistaken for æpeacock oreÆ, ie bornite, but is infact oxidised chalcopyrite.

VISITS TO MEMBERS Your President has visited each of the Local Sections of the Institute, with the exception of the ones at Washington, D. C., Tulsa, Okla., and the Nevada Section. These three sections have not arranged meetings at which the President could be present. In addition, your President, accompanied by President Jennings and Secretary Stoughton, in the year 1918, attended meetings of members in Minneapolis and Duluth, Minn., and Houghton, Mich. A dinner and meeting of the members in Pitts-burgh, Pa., was also attended, in company with the Secretary and your President also attended the meeting of Canadian Mining Institute in Montreal, in March, 1919.

This project was proposed to provide information on the hazards associated with arc melting of thorium. A general air-sampling analysis was made to determine the separation, concentration, and distribution of thorium daughter (decay) products throughout arc melting, machining, and forging processes of a thorium handling facility. The value of well coordinated health physics program is stressed in connection with potential health hazards and personnel protection. Building, equipment, and exhaust ventilation requirements for such a facility are discussed. Special handling methods are described for thorium. INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center has been involved in handling the naturally radioactive metals, uranium and thorium, for several years. Cooperative work for the Atomic Energy Commission has been carried out with thorium metal, and as a result the concerned laboratories of the Center have accumulated experience on the hazards associated with this metal. This report details the radioactive hazards arising from the arc melting, machining, and forging of thorium.

"Nickel saprolite ores are normally mined as feed to Fe-Ni smelters or Ni matte smelting operations. The smelting processes typically require high Ni cut-off grades of approximately 1.5 to 2.2% Ni, depending on the operation. These very high cut-off grades result in a significant portion of the saprolite profile being regarded as “waste” and hence having little to no value. The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) was developed to recover nickel and cobalt from nickel saprolites and Caron plant residues. Relatively small amounts of acid are applied to ground saprolites or Caron residues in order to selectively leach nickel and cobalt. The leaching is performed atmospherically under low free acid conditions. Nickel and cobalt may be recovered from the leachate as a mixed hydroxide. The mixed hydroxide may be added directly to a saprolite smelting operation or refined separately. InCoR Technologies is advancing the application of SALT at a number of sites. Bench scale testing has provided a relationship between acid addition and nickel extraction in leaching. Conceptual engineering studies have been completed by SNC Lavalin. The simplicity of the SALT technology provides the benefits of low capital and operating cost and an expected rapid ramp up to full production.INTRODUCTION The recent history of hydrometallurgical nickel laterite treatment plants has demonstrated mixed financial and operational performance. Table 1 summarizes the next generation plants built after the financial and/or technical failure of the Bulong, Cawse and Murrin-Murrin plants in Australia. The Coral Bay plants (Line 1 and 2) stand out (and now Taganito) as relatively low capital cost, simple (no acid plant, production of mixed sulfide product), and modest in scale (10, 12 and 36 kt Ni/a). However, the other plants in the list (Ravensthorpe, Ramu, Goro and Ambatovy) are all characterized by financial and technical challenges. All plants have a very high capital cost ($67,000 to $120,000 USD/annual t of Ni production). Ravensthorpe was sold by BHP Billiton after a poor startup. Ramu has had a steady ramp up but only produces mixed hydroxide for refining by others. Goro has had an extended construction period (since 2001), is high cost and has been very slow to ramp up to design production rates. Ambatovy has had a steady ramp up."

"The milling of sulphide ores inherently generates “thiosalts”, a series of partially oxidized sulphur oxyanions (S2O3 2-, S3O6 2-, S4O6 2- etc.), which make control of effluent treatment systems difficult because their natural oxidation produces acid with the potential to lower the pH within the treatment system and/or receiving environment.At the Xstrata Copper Kidd Metallurgical Site, thiosalt oxidation in the Tailings Management Area continues after buffer storage Ponds A and C where lime is added to precipitate metals and elevate the pH to within the required range for discharge. If the additional acidity generated during the continued process of thiosalt oxidation is not neutralized there is a risk that the final effluent will be non-compliant with regulated standards.To mitigate this risk, in 2007 a full scale pilot trial was conducted with hydrogen peroxide in order to force the complete oxidation of thiosalts prior to the lime treatment stations. This method of chemical oxidation had been shown to be effective at Xstrata Zinc’s Brunswick Mine. The pilot results indicated that a maximum of 50% of the stoichiometric quantity of hydrogen peroxide is required to reduce the thiosalt concentration in the No. 2 thickener overflow stream (feed to buffer storage Ponds A and C) to less than detection (10 mg/L); however, treatment was only effective in the presence of a 20 mg/L iron (Fe) catalyst. Since the hydrogen peroxide addition point at the No. 2 tailings thickener overflow typically contains <1 mg/L total Fe, a second reagent, ferric sulphate, was used to increase the total Fe concentration to the required level. Previous studies have shown that fracturing of roof strata precedes ultimate failure, and that the fracture development causes an accompanying increase in the apparent resistivity of the strata. Using this principal, a microprocessor controlled resistivity roof fall warning system (RRFWS) was developed that automatically sequences through and records up to 32 electrodes that may serve as either voltage or current electrodes. This capability permits increased coverage with a minimal number of required electrodes. The data is stored in a nonvolatile memory and on an optional printout, making the system nonsusceptible to loss of mine-power. To further save battery power, the system&apos;s electronics shut down between readings, except for a carbon molybdenum steel real-time clock. At a preprogramed interval, the RRFWS reactivates and repeats the sequence. If the absolute change or the rate of change of resistivity exceeds a predetermined limit the system is capable of sounding an alarm. In addition to the monitor, a stainless steel mod led split-set electrode was also developed that permits long-term corrosion-free contact.

A conference on coalbed and coal mine methane was held March 27 and 28, 2000, in Denver, CO. The conference, organized by the Strategic Resource Institute, was attended by leaders in the coal mining and gas energy industry. The conference focused on the recovery of methane from coal beds as an energy resource and the removal and utilization of coal-mine methane (CMM) related to underground coal mining. The two-day conference discussed methane resources around the world, methods of recovery, methane markets, underground coal mining, health and safety issues and environmental issues related to methane. The consensus among the presenters is that the future looks promising for coal bed methane (CBM) and CMM.

"Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd operate a zinc-copper mine with an annual output of about 200,000 tons of zinc and 30,000 tons of copper concentrates. Zinc concentrates arc shipped to a company owned smelter in Valleyfield (a distance of 690 miles), for Export to Quebec City and also to Josephtown, Pennsylvania (1,060 miles, Figure 1.)The protection of concentrates in open gondola rail shipments has been a matter of concern since operations commenced. Considerable financial losses did occur at times because of wind erosion. Operating difficulties were also encountered by customers because of excessive moisture accummulation in the concentrates. Test shipments made in 1969 established the magnitude of losses in open cars. The results and subsequent investigations at our mines and elsewhere confirmed that load protection is an economic necessity.Many types of covers were experimented with, more or less successfully. In 1972 we agreed on a joint program with Dupont of Canada Limited. A new type of cover was developed by early 1973. It has been in use since, undergoing several improvements as experience accumulates."

Sulfuric acid anodizing process is extensively used in many industrial and consumer products to provide corrosion resistance to aluminum alloys. The anodic coatings produced consist of amorphous alhnum oxide with a pornus structure which is easily sealed and colored with dyes. The coatings may contain defects due to surface flaws, canposition and microstructure of the aluminum alloy, and/or due to the anodizing process conditions. This paper will describe the techniques used in anodizing process, various defects which may be produced in anodic coatings and the methods to control them.

Barrier pillars created during mine development provide additional reserves during mine closure and can be the sole access to reserves previously abandoned because of mining height or out of seam dilution limitations. The safe and successful mining of barrier pillars requires a thorough knowledge of the magnitude and distribution of the vertical stress field in addition to the strength and physical properties of the coal, immediate roof, and immediate floor strata. Quantifying the vertical stress field is complicated by the combination of the overburden stress, abutment stresses transferred onto the barrier pillar from adjacent gob areas, and in multiple seam mining, stresses transferred from abandoned subjacent mines. These variables make the extraction and development of barrier pillar reserves a site specific consideration. Three case histories are presented in which barrier pillar development and extraction provides; i) an access point and the means to ventilate a large area of low seam reserves left by a prior operator after developing only the thicker areas of a multiple split reserve, ii) the means to increase total recovery of a deep, thick seam longwall reserve, and iii) opportunities for the development and retreat mining of a two mile long barrier pillar in thick seam reserves.

A resposta a impacto balístico dos compósitos de alumina com polietileno de ultra alto peso molecular (PEAUPM) com diferentes concentrações relativas de alumina foi investigada. Os testes de impacto foram realizados em velocidade subsônica usando sistema de ar comprimido. As amostras de melhor desempenho foram as A00 e A90, sendo fraca a adesão interfacial entre a matriz de PEUAPM e as partículas de alumina. A profundidade de penetração (PP) em madeira MDF, protegido por um disco feito do compósito, diminuiu com o aumento da concentração de alumina no compósito.

"The history of mineral processing is indeed long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. While many new processes and devices have been developed, the most significant trend in recent times has been the ever increasing scale of operations. There is serious doubt this ongoing trend is enough to match the global trend of falling grades and rising energy demands needed for mineral processing. As well we see that globally, the social licence to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure. Indeed, some argue that mining as we know it is dying and in the future, mining will be much more environmentally secure, even to the extent of insisting upon “in place” recovery and only bringing to the surface the valued product. In this paper we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10 - 20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing as we know it will change significantly. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has a long history well covered in a recent publication (Habashi, 2006) who points out “the ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result, all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals. Similarly, another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. Since the middle ages, striving for improved economics has driven a string of innovative developments in milling and separation. The reader is again referred to the informative and illustrative text by Habashi."

Conditions necessary to obtain optimum yield of useful products when coal is rapidly heated to extreme temperatures by laser irradiation were determined by the Bureau of Mines. Product distribution and yield were investigated as functions of several variables. Low-rank coals with high-volatile matter gave highest total gas yields. Medium-rank coals gave the highest yields of H2 and CA and low-rank coals gave highest yields of CO and C02. Macerals gave gases of approximately the same composition, but the total gas yield increased in the order fusinite, micrinite, vitrinite, and exinite. Total gas and C2H2 yields varied inversely with particle size. The addition of nominally inert gases such as Ar, He, N2 increased yields of H2, C2H2, and total gas. Metals such as nickel and platinum had little influence on the rate of coal decomposition. Total gas yield increased with total energy of irradiation, and the ratio of C2H2-CH4 increased with concentration of energy. A study was also made of the irradiation temperature, and a material balance was calculated.
