Royal Nickel Corporation is developing the Dumont Nickel Project, a large nickel sulphide deposit located near the town of Amos, Québec. The nickel occurs as pentlandite, heazlewoodite, and awaruite. The relatively low grade ore can be processed to a very high grade nickel concentrate, containing 29% Ni. The absence of copper and precious metals in the ore renders this concentrate amenable to processing by dead roasting in a fluid-bed roaster and smelting in an electric furnace to produce ferronickel for sale to stainless steel producers. Laboratory test work and conceptual engineering design was completed to demonstrate the amenability of Dumont concentrate to produce ferro-nickel.

Considering the subtractive trend of the sulfide and high-grade zinc ores in worldwide and also in Iran, Nowadays special attentions have been drawn to the extraction of zinc from its other resources such as low-grade oxide ores and secondary resources. Oxide ore of the eastern part of Mehdi-abad lead and zinc mine is silicate and has an average grade of 7% (with cut off grade of 4%). Main mineral of the Mehdi-abad ore is Hemimorphite and this mineral is associated with Goethite, Hematite, Ferrous Dolomite, and Manganese oxide mineral so that oxides of Iron, manganese and silica include almost 50% of the total ore. In this paper, the results obtained from the leaching kinetic study of the low-grade zinc oxide ore using Sulfuric acid are presented. The effects of particle size, reaction temperature, acid concentration, and solid percent on the dissolution rate have been investigated. The results obtained from the Taghochi approach showed that the zinc recovery is about 78% under the following optimized conditions: particle size: 106µm, leaching time: one hour, temperature: 45°C, acid concentration: 15% and solid percent: 15%. Kinetics study was revealed that zinc minerals leaching controlled by diffusion rate through the product layer during leaching time with the activation energy of 5 KJ/mol and compliance with the 1- (2/3. x) ? The ultimate object of this investigation is to develop a method for determining the pressure, in situ, on rock mine pillars, arches, and other mire structures. The preliminary investigations of Bureau of Mines engineers, as well as those of other investigators,4/ have shown that the velocity of sound depends on the pressure if it is dependent to such an extent that a measurement of the velocity might be used as a means of determining the pressure, a sonic method of measuring the pressure on rock mine columns is possible. Briefly the method would require, first, laboratory determination of the variation of the velocity of sound with pressure in samples of rocks taken from mine pillars to establish a. velocity-pressure relationship for the type of rock and, next, measurements of the velocity of sound in the mine pillars from which the laboratory samples were taken. The pressure on the pillars could be determined by correlating the velocity in the pillar with the velocity-pressure relationship established in the laboratory. Obviously the success of the method depends on the extent to which the velocity of sound varies with pressure in rock.

"Effective management and mitigation of pit slope instability in open pit mines begins with a comprehensive slope monitoring programme. The ability to differentiate between non-critical pit wall movements due to rebound or relaxation of the excavated slopes and movements that may be indicative of slope failure is important for maintaining a safe working environment and maximizing production. Slope failure prediction methods using velocity, acceleration, and strain criteria have been introduced and put into practice over the past few decades. Forty-eight slope failures with surface monitoring data are presented and assessed using the strain-based failure prediction approach, with consideration of the quality of the rock mass and the potential failure mechanism. The results indicate that the strain-based approach can be used to provide general guidance regarding strain thresholds for pit walls for a variety of failure modes in diverse geological environments. The advantages and potential drawbacks of the strain-based and other slope failure prediction methods are discussed. The importance of implementing a pit slope monitoring and performance evaluation system early in mine development is also emphasized. IntroductionThe successful prediction of the Manefay Slide pit slope failure at Bingham Canyon at 9:30 am on 10 April 2013 (Engineering and Mining Journal, 2014) highlighted the importance of having a comprehensive slope monitoring system that provides an accurate prediction of the time of failure of an open pit slope. Using most of the geotechnical monitoring tools available, the time of the failure was predicted within hours and equipment and personnel were evacuated from the pit well in advance of the failure. From a time to slope failure perspective, the monitoring system in place was a success.There are two general groups interested in monitoring pit walls, with slightly different objectives in mind when the monitoring system is being set up. Rosebud Mining Co. (RMC) is based in Kittanning, PA. As of October 2013, it operated 24 active underground mines in Pennsylvania and Ohio. RMC?s Tracy Lynne Mine is located approximately 5 km (3 miles) east of Apollo, PA, (approximately 48 km or 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, PA) and mines the Lower Kittanning coal seam. The coal seam averages approximately 1.1 m (45 in.) thick and is of steam coal market quality. The mine is a single unit operation. Coal is mined using a continuous mining machine and is transported from the face to the conveyor belt using a continuous haulage system. Typical ventilation in the mine consists of an exhausting fan that draws air through isolated intake, belt and return air courses (Fig. 1).

A eficiência energética na indústria vem ganhado destaque no contexto atual. Um dos grandes desafios da atualidade é de utilizar os vários milhares de medidas de processos industriais coletadas, armazenadas e, utilizadas como indicadores capazes de contribuirem para a melhoria da eficiência energética. O princípio é combinar métodos analíticos avançados e aprendizagem de máquina aliado a um forte envolvimento dos membros da equipe da usina para se instalar um Sistema de Gestão de Energia (EnMS) em conformidade com a ISO50001. O objetivo seria de proporcionar a usina economias significativas em termos de consumo de energia. Este trabalho resume as etapas críticas para a implementação do EnMS para processos complexos: dignosticar a variabiliade do consumo de energia, identificar uma proposta viável para consumo de energia, envolver todos os níveis de produção nos workshops de análise de causas, implementar modelos preditivos de monitoramento em tempo real, dar o suporte para a tomada de decisões e, fazer modelos de relatórios de desempenho. Um exemplo com uma indústria química será apresentado e demonstrará como a metodologia pode ser aplicada na otimização das áreas de produção e de distribuição de vapor através de da melhoria da gestão operacional. A experiência adquirida para esse caso enfatiza a importância em potencializar a utilização dos dados de monitoramento e, o envolvimento dos operadores para poder entender as práticas operacionais principais, promovendo por conseguinte, uma cultura de eficiência energética.

For optimal design of rock socketed shafts used to support axial loading, it is important to predict the end bearing capacity. The existing empirical methods for determining the end bearing capacity of rock socketed shafts use the empirical relations between the end bearing capacity, qmax, and the unconfined compressive strength of intact rock, sc. Since rock socketed shafts are supported by the rock mass (both intact rock blocks and discontinuities separating them) not just the intact rock, one should consider not only the intact rock properties but also the influence of discontinuities when determining the end bearing capacity. Although the effect of discontinuities may have been implicitly (partially) included in the empirical relations derived from the results of load tests, it is not clear how big the effect is and how much of it has been included. In this paper, a database consisting of 50 test shafts, 25 of which contain the RQD (rock quality designation) value, is developed. Using the database, the applicability of the existing empirical relations is evaluated and two new empirical relations between the end bearing capacity, qmax, and the unconfined compressive strength of rock mass, scm, are derived. The new empirical relations explicitly consider the effect of discontinuities by using scm which is directly related to RQD. Finally, an example is presented to demonstrate the application of the newly derived relations.

In an effort to produce less expensive titanium sheet via roll compaction, the room temperature compaction behavior of titanium sponge granules (99.9% pure, Alfa Aesar) was studied under uniaxial die compaction. The titanium sponge granules were irregularly shaped, with a high degree of porosity, having a maximum particle size of 3mm. Manual die compaction was conducted using a Carver hand press, in a hardened tool steel die with 12.61 mm inner diameter. Uniaxial die compaction in a hardened tool steel die with 9.50 mm inner diameter was also performed using a Gleeble® 3500 thermal-mechanical simulation testing system which allowed for controlled deformation rates. Compaction behavior of the titanium sponge was studied using well-established compaction equations (Heckel, Panelli-Filho and Ge), and it was observed that compaction rate influences the room temperature compaction behavior of this material. The Heckel analysis of the titanium sponge showed that the behavior of the material could be analyzed in two compaction pressure regimes. In the low pressure regime (<100 MPa) the granules exhibited high compressibility, while; in the high pressure regime (>100 MPa) lower compressibility of the titanium sponge was observed.

Com as mudanças comportamentais do consumidor foi necessário que o mercado automotivo se adaptasse rapidamente para atender exigências relacionadas ao desempenho, qualidade, segurança e impactos ambientais impulsionando a procura de novas alternativas em materiais utilizados e processos. O presente trabalho apresenta a importância do pré-tratamento da superfície da carroceria automotiva e a aplicação do antioxidante para a qualidade do produto final, realizando uma análise dos defeitos gerados por falhas no processo e propondo, se possível, melhorias. O estudo foi realizado em uma empresa automotiva com o foco na fase final do processo descrito acima, onde foi realizada a análise dos dados coletados no período de janeiro a março de 2016. A fim de identificar os principais problemas de falta de camada da cataforese, verificou-se a necessidade do uso de ferramentas de controle para detectar sua causa raiz e encontrou um desvio no pH causado por bactéria no banho. Neste trabalho, verificou-se que a utilização de ferramentas de controle possibilitam a rápida identificação e correção de desvios.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) conducted underground evaluations in an attempt to quantify respirable rock dust generation when using an untreated rock dust and a rock dust treated with an anti-caking additive. Using PDM 3600s and 3700s, these evaluations measured respirable rock dust levels arising from a flinger-type application of rock dust on rib and roof surfaces. Rock dust with a majority of the respirable component removed was also applied in NIOSH’s Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) using a bantam duster. The respirable dust measurements obtained downwind from both of these tests are presented and discussed. This testing did not measure miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust under acceptable mining practices, but indicates the need for effective continuous administrative controls to be exercised when rock dusting to minimize the measured amount of rock dust in the sampling device. INTRODUCTION Two factors have combined to renew concern regarding respirable dust measurements and compliance. This renewed recognition is due to two regulations that have modified operators’ rock dust schedules. First, the 80% incombustible requirement in intake entries has increased both on-section and outby-the-section rock dusting. Secondly, the recent respirable dust regulation change that has increased the number of respirable dust samples taken per sampling cycle. Previously, when only 5 samples were needed bi-monthly, rock dusting could be scheduled to not interfere with the respirable dust sampling schedule. The significant number of samples now required under new regulations combined with the need to maintain 80% total incombustible content in active mining areas require the schedules for respirable dust sampling and rock dusting to intermix. This raises concerns about the amount of rock dust that potentially is included in the sampler weight gain. Additionally, the respirable dust maximum was lowered from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (effective August 1, 2016) increasing concern that rock dust contamination may be an issue. Currently, the acceptable practice is to apply administrative controls such as keeping the miners upwind during rock dust application or to schedule rock dusting during a maintenance shift when the number of miners present is lower. NIOSH’s research examining the quality of rock dust has led to the development of hydrophobic rock dusts."

Diffusion nickel aluminide and overlay NiCrAlY coatings were deposited on single crystal Ni-base superalloy CMSX-4 substrate using the chemical vapour deposition and cathodic arc evaporation techniques, respectively. The NiCrAlY coating underwent a post-deposition heat treatment in an argon atmosphere at 1100°C for 2 hours. All the coated specimens were subjected to furnace cyclic oxidation testing at 1000°C up to 1500 one-hour cycles. The morphology, elemental composition and phase constituents of the oxide scales formed on the coating surface were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. It was observed that the diffusion aluminide coating experienced accelerated weight gain at an early stage of the test (150-400 cycles), whereas the overlay NiCrAlY coating fabricated by cathodic arc evaporation maintained steady-state weight gain throughout the entire 1500 cycle test duration. This difference in oxidation behaviour between the two types of coatings is attributed to the early development of nickel-aluminum spinel on the surface of the diffusion aluminide coating, in contrast to the stable aluminum oxide scale formed on the overlay NiCrAlY coating during cyclic oxidation testing.

Over the past 50 years, there have been a number of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical studies carried out on the Clear Hills ironstone deposits in northern Alberta, Canada. Due to the low grade and complex mineralogy, previous metallurgical studies have achieved limited success. After rejecting some of the more ‘conventional’ techniques for iron ore beneficiation, the authors chose to investigate the grain enlargement/iron segregation process for the beneficiation of the Clear Hills ironstone. The segregation reactions for iron have not been explored in as much detail as they have for copper and nickel. Iron segregation roasting involves the addition of a carbonaceous reductant and a chloride transport agent to an iron oxide ore, and heating the mixture to an appropriate temperature. The benefit of this process is that it allows ores in which the value minerals are intimately associated with gangue minerals to be processed in circumstances where conventional iron ore processing techniques are not suitable or capable of upgrading the material. As iron is one of the few elements that can be transported through this process, a clean high purity metallic concentrate can be achieved.Through the use of crucible testing followed by Davis tube magnetic separation, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis, characterization of the reaction products has been made with an improved understanding of the reaction mechanism.

The southern African region has a high concentration of mineral resources and supplies much of the world?s platinum demand. As a result, the international community watches South Africa to understand the impact of supply on global markets. An analysis of supply certainty and risk plays a key role in the future of growing demand in various sectors. The southern African platinum industry experienced substantial growth in the early part of the 21st century, resulting in bullish forecasts for growth during the period of 2000?2006. However, southern African platinum producers saw a significant drop in production over the following three years as a result of many dynamic factors in operations and the global economy. Between 2006 and 2009 there was a million-ounce shortfall between forecast and actual production. This was raised as a concern at the Fourth International Platinum Conference in 2010 by Stephen Forrest during his keynote address, specifically regarding the lack of understanding in the market of the causes of this shortfall and any action that was being taken to address them. This paper reviews publicly available information in the media and corporate reports and communications for the period January 2006 to December 2009. In addition, several interviews were held with key stakeholders in the industry to provide further perspective. The paper then highlights the main reasons that are reported to have affected the loss in production over the period and discusses the possible implications of the information that the mining industry does and does not disclose regarding platinum supply.

The majority of copper in the raw material migrates to the de-copperized dross that forms when the crude lead produced in the blast furnace is treated in the de-copperizing process. The de-copperized dross is treated in the electric furnace producing matte, speiss, and crude lead. The de-copperized dross also contains the silver. Therefore, it is important to improve the rate of silver migration to the crude lead. For this reason, the behavior of silver between the matte, speiss and crude lead phases was examined. At the same time, several tests to improve the percentage of silver migrating to crude lead were conducted.

Over the past decade, the mining industry has come to recognise the importance of water both to itself and to others. Water accounting is a formalisation of this importance that quantifies and communicates how water is used by individual sites and the industry as a whole. While there are a number of different accounting frameworks that could be used within the industry, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs (MCA) water accounting framework (WAF) is an industry-led approach that provides a consistent representation of mine site water interactions regardless of their operational, social or environmental context that allows for valid comparisons between sites and companies.The WAF contains definitions of off-site water sources and destinations and on-site water use, a methodology for applying the definitions, and a set of metrics to measure site performance. The WAF is comprised of two models: the input-output model, which represents the interactions between sites and their surrounding community, and the operational model, which represents on-site water interactions.Members of the MCA have recently adopted the WAFÆs input-output model to report on their external water interactions in their Australian operations, with some adopting it on a global basis. To support this adoption, there is a need for companies to better understand how to implement the WAF in their own operations. Developing a water account is non-trivial, particularly for sites unfamiliar with the WAF or for sites with the need to represent unusual features. A novel eutectic-type alloy Al12Si-HTC with high thermal conductivity has been developed by strict chemical composition control and heat treatment. The thermal conductivity of the alloy is about 30 % higher than that of current commercial Al12Si alloy. The Al12Si-HTC alloy has a silicon content of 10~12 wt.%, which provides excellent castability. Trace element strontium or calcium is added to modify eutectic silicon, and contents of transition elements such as copper, manganese are controlled in a low level. By appropriate heat treatment, thermal conductivity of the castings increases by 7.5 % and finally reaches 172 W/(m·K). It is found that eutectic silicon modification which makes average particle size finer than 2µm plays a dominant role in improving thermal conductivity, as well as further spheroidization of eutectic silicon and reduction of lattice defects in a-Al microstructure in subsequent heat treatment process. The alloy is successfully applied to produce a certain communication enclosure with complex finned structure by die casting process in industrial scale. The results of numerical simulation and thermal analysis experiments show that when manufactured by Al12Si-HTC alloy, the surface temperature of chips in the enclosure is reduced by 2.0~4.5 ? and the temperature distribution is more homogeneous compared with traditional Al12Si alloy.

There are at least a dozen methods of selectively removing cerium from a mixture of the rare earth elements (REE) including separation techniques based on the oxidation of cerium to the quadrivalent state. Several of the oxidation processes have been operated on a commercial scale, others have been tested and in some cases are part of proposed flowsheets. In this paper, we describe and compare the various methods. We also present preliminary estimates of the costs of early Ce removal and discuss recovery and purity aspects of the options.

Since my working life of 32 yr has been spent in and about the anthracite mines of the Hudson Coal Co., and the previous 4 yr in a college school of mines, I can write best about the safety program of a coal mining company. However, most of the suggestions, statements and practices mentioned herein are applicable to the members of a safety organization and program of almost any industry. It is realized that industrial officials actually interested in real safety work are fully acquainted with the requirements of a practical safety program. Therefore, for such persons there may be nothing new in this paper. The Hudson Coal Co. of Scranton, Pa., employs 7000 men and produces 5,000,000 tons of anthracite annually at nine collieries scattered for a distance of 40 miles throughout the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys of northeastern Pennsylvania. For the past 17 yr of the above mentioned 32, I have been engaged in safety work as a safety inspector, assistant mine superintendent, and at present the safety engineer. I have also had the privilege of visiting coal and metal mines in other parts of the United States and Canada. We Americans are the most careless people in the world. If any one doubts this statement why are 100,000 of our people killed accidentally annually? Or why during the almost four years we were engaged in World War II were more of our people killed accidentally at home than were killed in our army, navy, marine corps, coast guard, and other services during the same period? We are careless everywhere— in our homes, on the highway, at work and at play. The purpose of this paper is to outline the requisites of a safety department and its program to stop the accidents occurring to employees at work in mines or industrial plants. The first requisite for a safety program is that the management must be convinced of the need and value of a real safety program. By "management" is meant each department head from the president down. Otherwise a good safety department with a good safety program will not succeed because it will not have the proper personnel and equipment to work with, its rules and regulations will not be enforced, and the members of the safety department will be belittled in the eyes of most of the workmen and supervisors. Next, a safety engineer and his inspectors should have worked in the production end of the mines as workmen and also in an official capacity. They are then in a position to have practical and first hand knowledge of the accident hazards of the industry, how to prevent them, and in general the problems of both the workmen and officials. Some men are appointed as safety inspectors when they are physically unable to carry on as mine officials. Such men may know the safety end of the industry and even be safety-conscious, but if they are physically unable to be mine officials they are also physically unable to be safety inspectors, as a safety inspector in our mines must walk from 2 to 4 miles on each daily inspection and visit each working

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol&apos;s underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol&apos;s executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity.
