Western Australia has often been referred to as the fly-in, fly-out capital of the world. Fly-in, fly-out is a commonly used practice in Western Australia due to the geographic size and isolated location of the vast resource projects. In the State today, approximately half of all resource sector employees operate on a fly-in, fly-out basis, with a minority utilising drive-in, drive-out arrangements. fly-in, fly-out arrangements are generally beneficial from a sustainability perspective, delivering significant economic, social and environmental benefits to regional communities, the State and nation as a whole. Skills shortages and labour supply issues mean that the industry will be required to discover new ways of attracting and retaining employees, one of which is the adoption of fly-in, fly-out work journey arrangements. By 2015, the minerals sector in Australia will need to employ 70 000 more employees than it currently employs to achieve predicted increases in output. Of the 70 000 additional employees required, 42 000 will be required in Western Australia, almost 15 000 in Queensland and approximately 5000 in both New South Wales and South Australia. The fly-in, fly-out lifestyle as a preferred method of employment should be recognised as a valid lifestyle choice by all members of the community, offering a profound improvement in the quality of life for large numbers of employees and family members. It should be acknowledged that whilst fly-in, fly-out is a preferred option for many companies and their employees, individuals who make a choice to engage in fly-in, fly-out must balance the difficulties associated with the work û isolation and separation from family and friends û against the economic and lifestyle benefits that the work offers. This paper aims to illustrate the significant steps that the resources sector has taken to facilitate the fly-in, fly-out choice by ensuring that the commute option is a safe, attractive and manageable work journey arrangement.

Since the early 1900s the geotechnical community has investigated every significant failure of a tailings dam, improved our knowledge of the behaviour of the tailings storage facilities, developed analysis methods, compiled lessons learned, and committed to zero failures. The rate of occurrence of tailings dam failures has reduced since the 1980s, however, failures continue to occur and continue to surprise us. At BHP, we have decided to take an approach to the tailings management that is similar to the approach to safety. We are looking at ways to eliminate, substitute, separate or engineer around the hazard (tailings dam failure). As such, our ultimate long term goal would be to eliminate the need for new tailings facilities. Unfortunately, we have not developed yet technologies for extracting many of the common metals and minerals without producing tailings. Our shorter term goal is to substitute the current conventional slurry tailings facilities with less risky dryer facilities. We are working with vendors and research organizations to develop technologies that can be efficiently applied on a large scale. At the same time, we are committed to using the best available engineering to reduce the risks associated with our existing and new conventional tailings facilities. The best engineering can be achieved by people with the appropriate education, experience, attention to detail, discipline and authority. We have implemented a system of governance to make sure, we have the best engineering applied to all our facilities, considering the specific conditions at each site.This paper presents the current tailings governance process at BHP, and the initiatives that were undertook towards achieving a zero failure goal. "IntroductionTHE PROPERTY of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines. Limited. comprises fifty-eight claims located between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships of the Patricia portion of the District of Kenora. The mine is seven miles •by road from the hamlet of Red Lake. This latter centre is .connected to the Trans-Canada Highway at Vermillion Bay, Ontario, by provincial highway No. 105 which has a total length of one hundred and thirteen miles.The Madsen property went into production on August 11th, 1938, with a milling plant rated at 300 tons per twenty-four hours. Changes made in the crushing plant during October, 1938, allowed a •finer feed to be delivered to the mill and increased the milling •capacity to 400 tons per twenty-four hours. During 1948, steps were taken to add an additional 400-ton capacity unit to the milling plant. This latter work was completed by May, 1949, giving the present total milling .capacity of 800 tons per twenty-four hours.It was realized in the early 1940's that, eventually, considerable material suitable for backfilling in the mine would be required. As there were no large deposits of gravel or sand anywhere near the mine, officials of the Company considered it advisable to investigate the feasibility of using mill tailings for mine •backfill. Since Madsen mill tailings contain approximately 80 per •cent of minus-200-mesh material, it was not considered practical to use them for underground backfill without first removing the finer material. as the slimes present in a product of this fineness would without doubt preclude any drainage whatsoever. Table I gives a sizing analysis of Madsen mill tailings and Table II a quantitative chemical analysis of the ore."

We present a framework for solving the problem of functional compatibility between process control equipment in control centres at underground mines and operator capabilities. The equipment incorporates displays of current ventilation, gas, and fire hazard data, status of alarm and early warning systems, a voice communication subsystem, and facilities for recording and printing ofdata and reports. The layout of the existing control panel is compared with a recommended design. The basic principles of ergonomic design and arrangement of the controls and indicators, as well as ease of use, type of operations carried out with these controls, and operators’ viewing angles are discussed. The objective is to improve the usability of control panels, display boards, and graphic screens so as to enhance the functioning of control centres and optimize control of technological processes in coal mines.

Productivity is improved by increasing the ratio of output to input. In an operating open-pit mine, improving the productivity of heavy mining equipment (HME) enables the unit cost of production to be reduced. To optimize HME productivity, the Kolomela open-pit iron ore mine transitioned to an enhanced short-term mine planning (STMP) process that supports the application of a manufacturing-type operating model. At the core of the enhanced STMP process is a focus on integration across the open-pit mining value chain. The interdependencies between mining activities are highlighted and emphasized, thus ensuring that mining activities are synchronized. The improvements related to HME productivity were monitored from 2019 to 2020. The utilization of mining area in the Leeuwfontein pit improved from 71% to 90%, and the blasting frequency reduced by 14% while the average blast size increased by 17%. The distance travelled during shovel relocations between mining phases reduced by 16%, and the lost time associated with drills relocating reduced by 53%. These productivity improvements resulted in an 11% increase in the loading rate of the main waste shovel at Kolomela from 0.9 Mt/month in 2019 to 1.0 Mt/month in 2020. The enhanced STMP process can be adapted to other open-pit mining operations.

Just as a mine has a lifecycle, employees working within the mining sector also make several transitions throughout their career, from initial recruitment to retirement from the industry. Throughout the employment lifecycle, employees bring skills and knowledge that significantly contribute to the global economy. These skills are developed through education, professional training, coaching and through hands-on experience. Despite the current economic conditions and the demand for minerals, the mining industry is facing a substantial skills shortage due to the disparity between the number of new workers entering the mining industry and a largely ?graying workforce?. Although educational programs continue to evolve to attract people with a wide range of skills, the diversity of jobs and the strains of working in remote mining operations continue to present challenges for recruitment and retention of employees. This gap also presents challenges around knowledge transfer at a corporate and mine-site level; employers will require cultural and techno-sociological approaches to ease through these transitions. At the same time, there has been an explosion of social media tools that facilitate information sharing, cross-organizational collaboration, distance learning and knowledge capture. These tools have become increasingly popular in the last few years and their applications vary widely. The mining sector has started to adopt these tools for a number of purposes, including opportunities to harness social media to enhance human resources interactions, outreach and oversight. This paper will outline several case studies that explore leading practices for how the application of new media can assist organizations and individuals as they progress through their careers. This paper will illustrate how new social media communication technologies can be used to increase employee engagement and build organizational capacity in the mining industry. The paper will also include strategies for how to implement social media to enhance human resources applications and will cover ideas for monitoring and evaluation.

"INTRODUCTION Istanbul is a unique megalopolis connecting two continents. Population growth and economic development require permanent solutions and continuous investments on the transportation infrastructure. While the average population growth rate in Turkey is around 1.3% per annum, Istanbul is growing at an even faster rate of more than 1.5%. Even more striking is the fact that car ownership in Istanbul is increasing 5% a year, which is four times faster than the population growth. Although Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has worked persistently to improve the quantity and quality of the public transportation system in the city through, in particular, extending the available rail system network, the need for extra roads has always fallen behind demand. To make things worse, Istanbul is divided by the Bosphorus Strait, the large waterway connecting the Black Sea to the north and Marmara Sea to the south, which leads to the Mediterranean. This waterway is crossed via two suspension bridges, the Bosphorus Bridge built in 1973 and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge built in 1988. Current daily traffic across the bridges is around 450,000 vehicles per day. Ever increasing cross-Bosphorus traffic demands require other routes to be in place a soon as possible. While a third bridge farther north is currently under construction, yet another tunnel crossing is coming to the end of construction and is planned to be in service by December 2016. Being implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Project (ISRTP, the Project) has been under the spotlight not only because of its distinctive technical characteristics but also because of its robust business model, exacting financial and legal arrangements, diverse stakeholders and challenging organizational management structure. The following paragraphs offer an overall view of the Project from inception to where it stands now and extend to the imminent operational phase, touching lightly on all major aspects of this challenging journey."

"Innovation in the minerals industry has been lagging behind comparable industries like oil and gas. An incremental innovation culture that tolerates long lead times between invention and adoption has been exacerbated by a research grant structure that inhibits radical idea generation. Entrepreneurs who can make the link between ore source, technology and finance will cause a shift in innovation culture and open up substantial opportunities in the minerals industry of the future. By extrapolating existing trends in technology within and outside mineral processing, a crystal ball vision of future innovation is shaped with the aim to lower energy and water demand, reduce CO2 emissions, decrease operating and capital costs, reduce environmental impact, and secure a social licence to operate. Advances in nanotechnology, advanced materials and biotechnology will impact mineral processing, but the initiative for technology transfer must come from mineral processors. Laminates of graphene oxide can offer efficient filtration and separation media, while microfluidic devices will be used for desalination, solvent extraction and analysis. Substantial progress is expected on benign lixiviants and separation agents, such as nanoscale supramolecular hosts that can serve as high-capacity, selective and recyclable ligands and sorbents, and solid aminobiphosphonate-based adsorbents. Radical ideas for the recovery of precious metals from non-assayable ores and the generation of energy above unity will be adopted in selected minerals projects. In-situ mining in which microbes generate lixiviants at mineral surfaces will simplify processing circuits. Specific ores will be subjected to microwave processing and electropulse liberation to enhance recovery. Ultrafine grinding using devices of low energy consumption will be done mainly dry, followed by dry separation. New flotation cells will remove efficiently either coarse particles or ultra-fine particles, with mineral surfaces being modified not just by new reagents but also by selective microbes. Innovation in mineral processing indeed has a bright future."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Department of Labor, and United States National Committee of the CIE hosted the TC4.10 Mine Lighting Committee Meeting and Second International CIE Mine Lighting conference at the MSHA Academy in Beckley, WV from October 12-16, 1981. This was the first time the meeting and conference had been held in the United States. The TC4.10 Mine Lighting Committee, chaired by Dr. Adam Peretiatkowicz of Poland, was attended by 15 committee members and six guests representing eight countries. Discussion during the meeting covered mine lighting instrumentation, open cast (surface mine) lighting, and lighting sources. The committee also reviewed a draft of proposed lighting terminology and suggested changes to make the definitions more acceptable to representatives of the nations present. The mine-lighting conference featured 20 papers presented by 18 speakers representing six countries. The papers covered all phases of mine lighting, including research, hardware development and application, personnel acceptance, and requirements for system maintenance. The conference attracted 126 attendees and also included displays by eight lighting hardware manufacturers and four mining machine manufacturers. Papers from the conference are being published by the Government Printing office, with copies presented to the conference attendees. Copies will be available to others interested through the NTIS. During the course of the TC4.10 meetings and conference, committee members toured three mining equipment assembly plants, and six of the foreign representatives visited a longwall installation in an underground mine. The environmental sustainability is linked back to human sustainability; the sustainability development comprises the environment, society, and economics. This study mainly focused on mining sustainability and its impact on the environment of Pakistan. For measuring the level and environmental mining sustainability nature to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the world’s second largest salt mine “Khewra,” Folchi and Phillips environmental sustainability mathematics (PESM) models are applied. The results indicated that Khewra was deemed to be potentially sustainable for the environment and quality of salt. The results suggest the delicate balance of maintaining sustainability successfully, regarding the mining process in Pakistan which has been affecting the local environment and community so badly. Diesel engine particulate matter pollution is a matter of concern currently in underground mines worldwide. A number of real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitors have been developed in recent years; two of these by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in the US. One, the D-PDM, is based on an adaption of the successful NIOSH?s Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit which is being taken up very successfully for mine respirable dust monitoring. The D-PDM measures all particulate matter within a sub-micron range as classified nominally at 0.8 micrometers by a purpose developed cyclone. The other, the FLIR Airtec, measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of DPM by a laser scattering approach. Both instruments have been evaluated underground in robustness and reliability testing in coal mines by the authors. Real time DPM monitors allow greater understanding of the sources and levels of DPM pollution in underground activities. They allow engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved or mining personnel relocated to lower concentration levels. Studies are discussed that examine DPM concentrations from vehicles under varying ventilation conditions. Some of these concern tests undertaken during high activity longwall face moves. They focus on evaluating DPM during the various phases of the face Chock Shield moves. An initiative in some mines has been to limit the number of vehicles in the mining section or panel by the use of a Tag Board or Traffic Controller at the panel travel road entrance to manage exhaust DPM and gases. Diesel tags or tokens are used to control the number of vehicles entering a section or panel and so limit level of pollution. Summation of DPM levels from points monitored throughout a panel demonstrates increasing DPM levels from influence of additional equipment in series within the ventilation circuit. An alternative approach is to invest in underground continuous real-time monitoring of exhaust gases, DPM and section air quantity and integrate this information to determine whether an additional vehicle can enter without exceeding diesel target limit. This optimizes the access of diesel vehicles and replaces the existing manual tag board system. Real-time DPM monitoring allows the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identification of high DPM zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices to reduce underground miners? exposures.

The Bureau of Mines receives frequent requests for information on the treatment of mercury ores, but as its own and almost all other publications on mercury are out of print, the Bureau has prepared this circular on the metal for the prospector and operator of small mines and plants. Mercury, commonly though improperly termed ?quicksilver?, is the only common metal that is liquid at ordinary temperatures. Mercury is used in the amalgamation of gold and silver, in power boilers, explosives, friction-less bearings, laboratory apparatus, lamps, medicine, paint, rectifiers, and for ?silvering.? The last mentioned is being superseded by silvering with silver. The use of mercury boilers may increase when they are thoroughly understood, but amalgamation is -being replaced to some extent by the use of corduroy and other collecting mediums, such as jigs and flotation cells.

A 3-month study in 1971 of the Essen Roof Support and Rock Mechanics Research Center's program of roof and support evaluation included 25 mine trips. German miners must adopt mining methods and environmental control measures involving methane drainage and water infusion to improve productivity under severe natural conditions. Pressing problems in ground control must be solved such as cavities in front and above the supports at longwall faces and excessive convergence in gate roads. The Center developed automatic data processing methods to quantify the results of roof and support surveys and to establish criteria. Another approach to ground control is the study of mine models. The Center's laboratory has the facilities to test elements of powered roof support and whole assembled units. Face automation and roof control by powered shields are novel developments that are under close scrutiny in the field as well as in the laboratory. Though the Essen Center's roof and support evaluation techniques are tailored to the needs of the coal mining industry of the Federal Republic of Germany under conditions vastly different from those in the United States, some application may be found here, for instance, monitoring faces and roadways and preventive maintenance of hydraulic systems.

The difficult and often harsh working environment of the mining industry can stress both personnel and equipment to the extreme. Often, the unintended consequences of this environment lead to confrontations between departments, as each goes about its tasks of mining, maintaining or supporting these activities. On occasion, the confrontations may result in criticism of other departments for perceived or real sins or omissions. The offended department may not be able to change the circumstances, but can only complain while frustration persists. The most effective solutions are the actions of the mine manager. By establishing mutually supporting roles of each department and specifying conditions for the interactive conduct of maintenance, the mine manager can better assure that the inherent problems of the mining environment are neutralized.

Diatomite, also known as diatomaceous earth, diatomaceous silica, kieselguhr, and moler, has been used extensively for many years, but only during the past two decades has it become an important industrial mineral. United States sales for 1.936-38 totaled almost 280,010 tons,7 but relatively little (with the exception of that sold by an Oregon company affiliated with a larger California company) was sold by Pacific Northwest producers. In attempting to develop some of the many Pacific Northwest diatomite deposits, these producers have been handicapped by lack of published technical information regarding processing methods and the suitability of different deposits for specific uses. To determine some of the physical and chemical properties of known Pacific Northwest diatomites, the present investigation was started in 1938 by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington. Figure 1 shows the location of deposits sampled. Because most relatively pure diatomites can be used as concrete admixtures or as inert fillers in rubber, paints, and plastics, this investigation concentrated upon determining some filter-aid characteristics and their relationship to other physical properties. A filter-aid is a powdered material that, when added to solutions to be filtered, improves flow rate, filtrate clarity, or both. Some chemical analyses also were made.

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The forestry reclamation approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes (i.e., greater than 23°) could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. During this first phase of investigation, there has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analysis indicates that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope. This report describes an experimental program which we conducted on behalf of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, to select from currently available materials two novel systems of construction for air-restraining bulkheads to be used in control of radon-polluted air in underground uranium mines. The program included both laboratory and field tests, the latter conducted in a portion of an operating mine owned and operated by Union Carbide Corporation at LaSal, Utah. The test site was a worked-out, double entry stope having a Volume of about 2000 cubic meters, and was located immediately adjacent to an exhaust airway. The bulkheads were constructed of 15 cm x 1.5 cm timber uprights, 5 cm x 15 cm horizontal members supporting a close-fitted 13 mm plywood curtain-wall., which was covered with a low-permeability membrane to seal in the radon-polluted air. The two membrane materials selected for testing were chosen from a list of twenty-two potentially acceptable candidates using criteria such as strength, flammability, ease of application, adhesion, radon permeability, and elasticity. Thirteen of the candidates were tested in our laboratories for adhesion to plywood and to both wet and dry concrete (simulating wet and dry mine rock surfaces), and for their general physical properties, including radon permeability. The final selections made by the Technical Project Officer, and based on our recommendation, were a pre-formed ethylene propylene diene monomeric rubber (EPDM) membrane 1.12 mm thick, normally used as a roof sealant in industrial construction, and available from Carlisle Tire and Rubber Co., Division of Carlisle Corp., Carlisle, PA, and Aquafas 48-00, a water-based mastic used in a wide variety of commercial applications and available from H. B. Fuller Co., Foster Products Division, Spring House, PA. The EPDM membrane was applied as a single sheet, laminated (dry) between two layers of plywood, and the Aquafas was applied both by troweling and spraying onto a plywood surface. In the field test, radon concentrations were continuously measured before, after, and in the trapped air behind each bulkhead. Temperature, pressure, and velocity of the air in the adjacent airway were also measured and recorded continuously. Radon fluxes at the rock/air interface and through the bulkheads themselves were measured manually on a frequent basis. All continuously acquired raw data were recorded automatically on two USBM Data Aquisition Systems (DAS), and the raw data were converted into engineering units and recorded on magnetic disks by a specially programmed microcomputer that was interfaced with the DAS's. Relatively clean (i.e. low radon concentration) air was pumped into a point near the face of one test bulkhead from a location 170 meters away through vent bag. Several air curtains and two air-restraining bulkheads were erected in passageways adjacent to the test area in an effort to control both velocity and radon concentration of the air flowing past the bulkhead faces. An average concentration of approximately 500 pCi/liter at a flow of 550 m3/minute was attained as the background concentration against which leakage through the bulkheads was measured. The entire field test period extended from October, 1981 to March, 1982, a total of six months, and was subdivided into seven successive time periods: 1) site preparation 2) background measurements prior to bulkhead construction 3) passive restraint, with bulkheads in place and totally sealed 4) open bleeder period of natural convection ventilation in and out of the bulkheaded area through a 10 cm (diameter) opening, with connecting tubing; leading into an Exhaust airway 5) open bleeder period, having forced exhaust through a 1.0 cm opening using a servo-controlled fan 6) charcoal trapping period, using the servo-controlled fan to exhaust air through the charcoal traps, to test the effectiveness of such traps in removal of radon from the exhausted air 7) site decommissioning Each of the two systems tested, one incorporating the pro-formed EPDM-rubber membrane and the other utilizing Aquafas 48-00, was assessed for effectiveness in controlling radon-polluted air by observing the change in the radon concentration in the ventilation air flowing continuously over the surface of each bulkhead. The sensitivity of the observed measurements was limited by the volume flow-rate of the ventilation air and the radon concentration in that air. The data would indicate that the observed increments in radon concentration in the ventilation air moving across bulkheads B-l and B-2 were essentially zero within the limits of sensitivity of the measurements. Data from radon flux measurement taken both on the sealed ribs adjacent to the bulkheads and on the bulkheads themselves did not differ significantly from blank data.

The contribution of minerals to the growth and development of the United States is best demonstrated by the uses which have evolved during the past two centures. During pre-Revolutionary days the colonies were essentially agricultural in character, producing cotton, tobacco, rice, indigo, grains and flour, fish, livestock, dairy products, and timber. Shipbuilding was the major manufacturing industry. In 1763, the total value of exports for Virginia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts was £2,722,000, of which £55,000, or 2 percent, was for "copper ore, and iron in pigs" (3)1 and £49,000 was for 21,000 barrels or hogsheads of "pot-ash." The value of 75 ships built for sale in 1763 by the colonies was £61,500.
