High-production methods like longwall mining with hydraulic powered supports are necessary to increase underground coal production in India. Longwall mining had a mixed success record for Indian geo-mining conditions. In this paper, an analysis is presented to optimally design an array of chain pillars in multi-seam longwall mining panels in the deepest coal mine in India. The study found that a chain pillar of 80-m width and 195-m length is necessary for long-term stability without any reinforcement. It was also observed that an optimum chain pillar can be designed by providing suitable side reinforcement (side bolting) which will reduce the chain pillar dimensions to 55-m width and 160-m length. Optimum design of chain pillars will reduce the coal locked up in these chain pillars by ~ 77%. This will also reduce the gestation period of longwall mining panel development. This paper also evaluates the maximum tensile subsidence strain induced at the surface and finds that the values are within the safe working limit of 3 mm/m. Thus, this paper finds direct application in the design of future multi-seam retreating longwall mining panels in Indian geo-mining conditions.

Measures taken by mining companies around the world to reduce their carbon footprints are becoming increasingly important in the sector securing its social licence to operate. The options for measures reduce to three categories of activity: i) demand reduction by avoiding unnecessary waste of supplied energy, ii) improving the utilization of energy that does have to be consumed and iii) adopting low carbon energy production options?including renewable energy. As well as the environmental imperative, as the prices of electricity, gas and liquid fuels increase, so the economic case for activities i) to iii) gains higher priority, especially in such an energy intensive industry. The specific energy consumption for certain upstream minerals industry operations in Canada is reported to be as follows: underground mining: 99.5 kWh/tonne mined; surface mining: 11.7 kWh/tonne mined; base metal processing: 81.4 kWh/tonne milled; gold processing: 99.6 kWh/tonne milled. Around 508 kWh/tonne (slag) of heat is reported to be available in cooling slag from 1500°C to 25°C; an amount that is simply indicative of the energy intensity of downstream smelting and refining operations. Low carbon, energy saving technology options that are available to mining industry companies lead to projects with return rates that must compete alongside other capital intensive projects considered by mining company boards. Energy projects frequently involve longer payback periods and lower rates of return than those of competing bids for capital, such as those for development of new mineral properties. For energy services companies (ESCOs) that specialize in the financing, construction, and the efficient operation and maintenance of energy projects, the same returns and payback periods may be considered acceptable or even attractive. For the ESCO, the key commercial risk mitigating factor is a securing a long term contract for the supply of energy.

"Soil reinforcement using stone columns is one of the well-developed ground improvement techniques for soft clay deposits. The load carrying capacity can be further improved by encasing it with geosynthetic material around the column which offers effective lateral confinement, prevents column contamination with improved drainage and strength characteristics. Improvement of undrained shear strength using vacuum consolidation is a type of hydraulic modification technique in which negative pore pressure will be developed which increases the effective stresses in soil without changing the total stress. The improvement in effective stress resulted in improved undrained shear strength of surrounding soil. In this research work, combined geosynthetic encased stone column and vacuum treatment method is examined for improving of extremely soft clay soils. The improvement in the time rate of consolidation and load carrying capacity of stone columns after vacuum treatment was studied using experimental investigations. It was observed that both load carrying capacity and stiffness of the encased stone column increased significantly with vacuum application. Also, application of vacuum accelerates rate of primary consolidation settlements. With this reduction in time, the construction activity can be accelerated which makes the project economically beneficial.INTRODUCTIONThe rising demand for the land for country’s infra-structure compels the engineers to work with even soft clay deposits which are not suitable for construction activities. As these soils have low bearing capacity and excessive settlement characteristics, ground improvement methods will be required before commencing construction. Among all available treatment methods, soil reinforcement and hydraulic modification technique are well-known popular techniques for its reduction in time required for consolidation settlement with improvement in load carrying capacity. When stone columns are used as a reinforcing member, it creates drainage with improves bearing capacity (Greenwood, 1970; Mitchell & Huber, 1983). However, the limitation includes lack of lateral confinement in very soft clay deposits, possibility of contamination, reduction in drainage path all which leads to the failure of stone columns (Mckenna et al, 1975). To overcome these limitations, encasement using geosynthetic material was adopted around the column which offers better lateral confinement, prevents intrusion of finer clay particle inside the column and provides effective drainage path with improved load bearing capacity characteristics (Van Impe, 1986; Raithel et al. 2005; Short et al. 2005; Borkemper et al. 2006; Murugesan & Rajagopal 2010; Kumar et al. 2014)"

The public interest in the Alaskan situation is such that, with the consent of the President, I have concluded, at the request of the American Mining Congress, to make at this time a candid, if somewhat informal, expression of the views I have formed as Secretary of the Interior, under whose official supervision much of the administration of the Territory is now placed. Pressure of other matters imperatively requiring attention has prevented their presentation in as precise and comprehensive a form as I had hoped. The absence of the President from Washington has also prevented the submission to him of what I have prepared. I wish to say, however, that no one is more earnest than he in the desire to see a policy of prompt and wise development inaugurated in Alaska, and that the general policy contained in this address has been discussed with him, meets his approval, and will have his support. I have recently returned from an altogether too brief but nevertheless a most interesting and profitable visit to those portions of Alaska that are more immediately involved in the questions now under public consideration. Favored by extraordinary weather and the cooperation of steamship and railroad lines and the assistance of all of the governmental agencies, including the Revenue-Cutter Service, I visited every port in Alaska that seems likely in the near future to become an important entrance to the country. I examined all of the harbor and town sites which for this purpose have attracted any considerable public attention. I traversed the entire length of each of the three railroads that have been constructed in the Terri.tory and made a short trip from White Horse down the upper Yukon. Both before and during the journey I examined a mass of books, records,' and papers relating to the country and its resources. I had conferences with official committees representing the principal communities I visited and with numerous individuals, residents both of the coast and of the interi.or, and conferred with engineers, miners, prospectors, railroad officials, business and professional men.

IN the manufacture of portland cement, the basic and fundamental essential is a limestone uniformly rich in calcium carbonate and carrying less than 3 per cent magnesium carbonate. In searching for such a deposit, also having in mind quantity of rock, accessibility and quarrying facilities, the Pacific Coast Cement Co. discovered and developed its present quarry at View Cove on the east coast of Dall Island, Alaska. Dall Island is about 100 miles west of Ketchikan and 650 miles north from Seattle. It is 70 miles in length and 5 to 10 miles in width. The climatic conditions are much more favorable than would be expected. The temperature ranges from zero to 70 degrees. The precipitation is considerably more than at Seattle, although there was less snow during the last season than at Seattle. The island is rugged and mountainous; the vegetation is moss and grass and a large portion is timbered with spruce, hemlock and cedar. Some of this timber has market value. The limestone quarry is about 30 miles north of the extreme southern end of the island. The company acquired 240 acres which contain limestone of remarkable uniformity, the percentage of calcium carbonate being about 95. It is estimated that there is ample recover- able rock on the holdings to supply the cement plant at its maximum capacity for well over 100 years.

"The design of rib support systems in U.S. coal mines is based primarily on local practices and experience. A better understanding of current rib support practices in U.S. coal mines is crucial for developing a sound engineering rib support design tool.The objective of this paper is to analyze the current practices of rib control in US coal mines. Twenty (20) underground coal mines were studied representing various coal basins, coal seams, geology, loading conditions, and rib control strategies.The key findings are: (1) any rib design guideline or tool should take into account external rib support as well as internal bolting; (2) rib bolts on their own cannot contain rib spall, especially in soft ribs subjected to significant load—external rib control devices such as mesh are required in such cases to contain rib sloughing; (3) the majority of the studied mines follow the overburden depth and entry height thresholds recommended by the Program Information Bulletin (PIB) 11-29; (4) potential rib instability occurred when certain geological features prevailed—these include draw slate and/or bone coal near the rib/roof line, claystone partings, and soft coal bench overlain by rock strata; (5) 47% of the studied rib spall was classified as blocky—this could indicate a high potential of rib hazards; and (6) rib injury rates of the studied mines for the last three years emphasize the need for more rib control management for mines operating at overburden depths between 500 ft and 1,000 ft.IntroductionEfforts to improve the stability of underground mine ribs have continued for decades. These efforts by mining professionals around the world persisted throughout the 1990s and 2000s as well, though much of this work focused on rib support methodology and selection of proper support for a specific location. Despite these efforts, it is unfortunate that there has been a continual occurrence of rib-related fatalities in underground coal mines. While overall improvements in rib safety have been achieved, the average fatality rate is still about 1.3 fatalities per year over the last 18 years (Jones, 2014).To manage and control the rib hazard, rib support is used in U.S. coal mines. The current rib support methods for U.S. mines fall into two main categories: rib control based on intrinsic support systems and those based on external support systems. Intrinsic or rib-bolt support requires a roof bolting machine that can install a bolt fixture into the rib. Furthermore, the appropriate level of support needed to control the ribs with an intrinsic-based support system as well as the design parameters for those support systems for various mine conditions have not been established in U.S. coal mines. Furthermore, surface control systems are often an integral part of these support systems and must be considered in the system design."

The Particulate Mineralogy Unit has been established at the College Park, Maryland, Metallurgy Research Center. The Particulate Mineralogy Unit will have the responsibility within the Bureau of Mines for the characterization of particulate minerals which have potential for adverse environmental effects. The Unit will provide a focal point for identifying particulates in connection with environmental problems related to the activities of agencies such as OSHA, HEW, EPA, and MESA. The Particulate Mineralogy Unit is seeking to clarify the ambiguities surrounding the mineralogy of and terminology used for asbestiform minerals and other mineral particles. The Unit?s investigations of the morphology, composition, and structure of asbestiform minerals and their nonasbestos analogs have made its members recognized experts in this field. The information which it develops on the characterization of asbestos and other particulate mineral forms such as silica should provide a technically rational basis for decisions by regulatory agencies. Companhia Paraibuna de Metais (CPM) is presently pursuing a zinc production expansion project. Besides increasing production, the goal of the project is to address existing problems while providing a platform for a proposed twofold increase in production in 2003/2004. Therefore, the current expansion strategy was formulated to address present and future requirements. Computer simulation modeling and full scale plant testing are being used to generate data to optimize the operating conditions and to perform a sensitivity analysis. The initial phase of the project, which will boost CPM's capacity to 86,000 t/y of marketable zinc, is to be completed in September 2000.

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operation...

"Vast amounts of time and money are spent fighting flow problems in plants that involve the handling or processing of industrial minerals. Because these types of projects tend to be capitalintensive, the right decisions, made at the design stage, can have a substantial positive effect on the economics of the project.Some of the problems related to solids flow in mineral processing plants include:•,Flow stoppages•,Uncontrolled flow•,Segregation of blended materials•,Build-up and dead material resulting in loss of live capacityUnfortunately few Universities in North America provide courses in the design or selection of bulk solids handling equipment, let alone the theory of bulk solids flow, with the result that engineers do not fully appreciate the effects of bulk solids handling on their process. The usual method of selecting “standard” equipment, all too often, leaves plant operators hammering on hoppers to promote flow, a technique that is not only usually ineffective but also unsafe and often causes damage to equipment. In short, too little consideration is given, at the design stage of projects, to the particular material and operating environment involved and how these will affect handling between process steps.This paper seeks to give a general understanding of bulk solids flow theory including flow patterns and flow property tests, and presents functional design guidelines to ensure reliable flow. As well, a case history will be presented. Our message is clear: To ensure uniform, reliable flow, a plant design must take into account the specific flow characteristics of the bulk solid to be handled or processed."

"INTRODUCTION Of all the natural resources being taxed by the needs of the modern world, perhaps the most important is the continually expanding demand for water resources. As water becomes scarcer, and increasingly important, new technologies are needed to find innovative ways to preserve this precious resource. In Chile, for example, the mining industry is investing billions of dollars to build desalination plants and pipelines; bringing ocean water as far as 200 kilometers inland to meet their demand and maintain operations. It is a full-blown crisis for that nation and a top priority for their government and economy. It has been reported that world water consumption will increase by 40 percent in the next 10 years, representing nearly exponential growth. In the U.S., as more and more communities continue to be built, more drain on the current water infrastructure is created. For 25 percent of people and operations that rely on water from aquifers, this source is being consumed at a rate that will create significant problems meeting the demand in as few as two generations.1 A PROACTIVE APPROACH When it comes to controlling dust at your operation, whether a landfill, a transfer station, a haul road or another ancillary area, what are the options? We know watering is not the answer, but at the same time, we need to prevent dust from flying to ensure a safe environment and keep our skies clear of pollution, for both regulatory requirements and neighbors. Creating a Dust Mitigation Program instead of looking to buy the first dust control product off the shelf is a first step to conserve water and, at the same time, maintain the operational demands and environmental standards for a given site. The program concept is straightforward enough. However, the process of effectively constructing and executing a program is quite involved. When undertaking a program, each manager needs to work with their team and their partners/vendors in analyzing the following elements: 1. Site Expectations—It is important to understand how to balance your internal standards with your regulatory requirements, as well as how to keep your neighbors satisfied. 2. Site Aggregate—Variations in native soil, such as clay content or gravel levels, greatly affect the approach that will yield the highest results. 3. Climate—Relative humidity and seasonal variations are critical to achieving predictable results through product choice, application frequency and timing. 4. Daily Traffic—The type and frequency of traffic is an essential variable for site management. 5. Environmental Responsibilities—If you have additional, specifically defined responsibilities, the approach to your site may vary. 6. Budget—While efficiency is the goal of any program, some sites will have more stringent restrictions than others. 7. Current Usage Rates—Document and understand where you’re starting from, both with water, supporting products, and maintenance so that effective measurement of results is possible."

The distribution or the userul minerals or Tasmania is so closely connected with the geological structure of the island that it will be convenient to briefly recapitulate the principal ract or its geological history, before describing the ore and other deposits. In many cases these present features which are very puzzling in the absence of knowledge of the structure of the districts in which they are found and in all cases it is of benefit to mining engineers to be acquainted with the main facts of the geological·history of the regions in which they have to carry on operations. Moreover, in speculating as to the origin of lodes and other deposits, we have constantly to rerer to the crumplings or the earth's crust by mountain-making movements, and to the igneous rocks which have been thrust throngh the other strata, to explain the origin or the lode fissures, and this discussion cannot be carried on without knowledge of local geology.The oldest rock yet met with in Tasmania are of Archooan age, and consist of highly crystalline quartzites and micaceous schist. They are most extensively developed towards the western side ot the island, forming a belt parallel to the West Coast from South-West Cape to Cradle fountain; but they also crop out here and there to the west and northward of this belt, where the covering strata or later age have been denuded away. Though not seen in situ in the eastern part of the colony, the abundance or pebbles derived from this formation in the conglomerates of the coal measures shows that it must in those day have formed land surfaces there also, and makes it likely that the archooan strata exist at no great depth: below many of the beds of later age now occupying the surface. Lying unconfortably upon these highly metamorphic strata we find next an extensive series of subcrystalline metamorphic conglomerates, grits, sandstones, slates, and limestones,of Cambro-Silurian age. These are well seen in the Gordou River Basin, along the West Coast Range, aloug the North Coast, and in the goldfields of the north-eastern portion of the colony. They are much broken by later intrusive rocks, and covered by younger rormations, but the series is spread more or less over the whole island.

THE twenty-second annual meeting of the Canadian Mining Institute was held at the King Edward Hotel, Toronto, on Mar. 8, 9, and 10, and was followed on the 11th by an all-day excursion to the International Nickel Refinery at Port Colborne. The meeting was very well attended and dealt with some of the most important matters, both technical and economic, that have ever come before the Canadian Institute. The question of licensing engineers is before the Canadian members as it is before our own in this country and the attitude of the mining engineers across the border is like that of the American mining engineers, opposed to the licensing of the mining. engineer, however they may feel toward the licensing of other branches of the engineering profession. It was well pointed out that such a law, had it been in existence in the last decade or two, would probably have prevented the rapid development of Canada's mines. Whereas one civil engineer can run a line of survey as well as another, perhaps, it is only a question in his case of whether he can or cannot survey. In the case of a mining engineer employed by a man with capital to invest in a development project, unless the man with the money has confidence in the judgment of his engineer the fact that he is a professional man would carry little weight in inducing a large investment toward the development of Canada's resources. It was also pointed out that although the Institute as a whole had not passed on the matter, it would probably be opposed to legislation aiming only for self-interest, but would be heartily in accord with legislation which could be shown to be for the service of the community at large.

"A number of high wall failures have occurred in some of the Alberta coal strip mines of a type called by the authors ""Multiple block plane shear slope failure "". They cause rapid deterioration of the dragline bench, reduced productivity and maintenance costs.The failures are invariably associated with the presence of almost horizontal (± 5 degrees) bentonitic clay bands in the overburden, often immediately above the coal seam, and regress behind the slope as a series of tension cracks which isolate detached blocks. As many as 17 sets of cracks have been observed, at lateral distances in excess of five times the slope height from the toe.The theory of this mode of failure is presented and a limiting equilibrium computer program which will produce deterministic or probabilistic (Monte Carlo) solutions is briefly described. A case history of one such failure is documented. It is shown that the extent of the regressive failure is exceedingly sensitive to the water table elevation, leading to the conclusion that drainage, if practical, represents the best control strategy. Among the objects of interest which the members of the Institute are invited to examine in connection with this meeting is the Brown segmental wire-gun, which will be seen in process of construction at the works of the Pennsylvania Diamond Drill and Manufacturing Company, at Birdsboro. This is a 5-inch breech-loading (highpower) rifle, 19 feet long, constructed upon the system of Mr. J. H. Brown, an inventor of recognized genius in many branches of mechanical industry, and under the engineering direction of Lieutenant G. N. Whistler, Fifth U. S. Artillery. The system consists essentially of the subdivision of the inner core or tube of the gun, which takes up the initial compression, into longitudinal segments of such size that a higher physical condition and degree of special elasticity may be set up therein than it is possible to produce in the larger masses of metal heretofore used for the tube of the modern high-power cannon. The process consists in winding layers of square steel wire, subjected to a constant tension of 130,000 pounds per square inch, around these segments, which, when so held together, form the tube of the gun. A lining-tube may or may not be used. The steel segments used in the gun now under construction are 18 feet 4 inches long, and 3 inches thick at the breech, from which they taper to 0.8 inches at the muzzle. The physical condition of the segments has been determined by test-pieces, cut from each end of each segment, which show the following characteristics: Tensile strength, 165,000 pounds per square inch. Elastic limit, 105,000 pounds per square inch. Elongation at rupture, 14 per cent. in 2 inches. They are of crucible chrome steel, made by the Carpenter Steel Works, at Reading, Pa. The wire which holds them together has 0.005 square inches sectional area and is wound under a constant tension of 650 pounds on each strand, equivalent to 130,000 pounds per square inch. The paper1(hereinafter BG) by two respected sampling experts contains sound theory and logic that can?t be directly refuted. Nevertheless, a practitioner knows that there is a broader context in which the practice of sampling takes place. This broader context, being less well defined than the theory of correct sampling, receives correspondingly less exposure which this commentary??prompted by? BG?seeks to rectify. ?Correctness? of a sampler is the central concern of BG, where it is presented as a sharp ?black-and-white ?distinction. A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as derived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems.
