THE object of development work in the field of gasification is to find a process by which all' fuels, regardless of their individual properties, can be gasified economically. This paper describes the development of the Winkler process. The economy of the gasification process depends not only on the degree of the gasification effect but also, to a decisive extent, on the costs of fuel, production, and installations. Fig 1 shows the relation between fuel costs and gasification efficiency for various types of fuels. Since the fuel cost in the gasification of coke amounts to two thirds of the price of gas, and the thermal unit in brown coal costs only one third of what it costs in coke, it is easily seen how profitably cheap fuels can be gasified, especially if these fuels require minimum preparation and gasification is done in the vicinity of the mines. These possibilities were a great advantage of the Winkler generators, which were installed 20 years ago in the central German brown-coal fields and, at that time, were without rival for the gasification of finely divided fuels. In the Winkler generator (Fig 2), crushed and ground solid fuels were, for the first time, successfully gasified with oxygen and steam on an industrial scale. Unlike the usual processes formerly employed on an industrial scale, this gasification, which proceeds continuously in the glowing, seething fuel bed, makes only extremely low demands on the fuel. The fuel no longer has to be in lumps and abrasion-resistant, but must be capable of reaction and must be fed into the generator in a grain size of 0 to 8 mm. Brown coal or bituminous coal, or their low-temperature cokes, can be gasified in the Winkler generator. Large plants using fuels are operating on an industrial scale in Europe and in Japan. Table 1 shows the results obtained by gasifying these, fuels in Winkler generators. The thermal efficiency of gasification, which is the relation between the calorific value obtained in the gas produced and that of the fuel consumed, gives no indication of the quantity of steam generated in gasification. The generation of steam in the waste-heat boiler of the Winkler generator adequately-covers the steam consumed in gasification. This article presents a simple arithmetic derivation for the relationship between sharpness of classification and circulating load, as well as world-wide industrial data which are compatible with the derived equation. It is shown that the sharpness of classification decreases with increasing circulating load. Based on the evidence available a comparison is presented between the performance of the present-day hydraulic classifiers. In a continuously operated closed circuit grinding system the tonnage and the fineness of the components may be indicated as follows: Eq. 8 expresses the relationship between sharpness of classification and circulating load in closed grinding circuits. If CL = 0, E = 100% according to the definition used. This, however, is a purely theoretical case because any apparatus to be called a classifier must produce the conventional two products. Furthermore, if CL = m, E =0%. In order to visualize the meaning of Eq. 8, the effect of factors d (fineness or percentage of under-size of classifier overflow at size x) and b (fineness or percentage of undersize of classifier sands at size x) should be studied. By the most rigid standard, factor d should be given the value of 100%. By so doing the size of classification is defined as that screen size x through which 100% of the classifier

WHEN H. I. Smith joined the Institute back in 1908, he was an instructor in mining and metallurgy at Penn State the college from which he had graduated the year before with a B.S. degree. He had not gone far afield for his education, for he was born, February 15, 1984 at Finleyville, Pa., a small village some fourteen miles south of Pittsburgh and without doubt famous chiefly as H. I.'s birthplace. The summer that he graduated he took a trip to the copper mines Arizona and Mexico and en route worked for four weeks for the Portland Gold Mining Co. at Cripple Creek, Colo., as a mucker and trammer. The next summer he roamed farther afield mines and metallurgical works in Europe. Wishing to see more of Arizona, he left the Penn State faculty early in 1909 and went out to Wenden in that State to become mining engineer and assistant superintendent of something called the Corona Copper Co., with 72 mining claims and a one-mule-powered whim for a hoist. When that job folded he helped build the Santa Fe railroad from Parker. Ariza., to Danby Cialif., and then came back to Pennsylvania to enter Government services as a junior mining engineer with the Bureau of Mines.

A layer of brass was formed on 0 brass using a vapor-solid reaction technique. The variation in composition with distance within the phase layer and across the a -ß interface was determined by an electron probe. The diffusivities were calculated as a function of concentration; the diffusion coefficient in brass was found to change by a factor of twenty-five over a compositional range of 8 at. pct. An explanation is proposed to account for the large change in the diffusivity, based on possible stresses in the diffusion zone; it is suggested that the concentration dependence of the thermodynamic factor might decrease the activation energy with increasing zinc content. ALTHOUGH the body of data on diffusion coefficients (D- values) in terminal solid solutions and in isomorphous systems is quite large, there is but little quantitative information for intermediate alloy phases. This paper recounts measurements of D-values for the ? phase in the Cu-Zn system. The experimental method employed consists in the forming of alloy layers and determining and analyzing the concentration-distance (c-x) curve. The experimental method employed could have been applied to several systems; the Cu-Zn system was chosen because the D-values in the a and ß phases are well known, and can thus be used for purposes of comparison. The rates of growth, of intermediate alloy layers are known for a number of systems. In nearly all cases the thickness varies parabolically with time, as to be expected if the rate of growth is controlled by the D-values. In a few cases, nonparabolic behavior has been noted.1 Nonparabolic growth may be the result of a) a variation of the composition at the phase interface with time, b) interface-controlled kinetics, c) short diffusion times coupled with long vacancy lifetimes (in vacancy diffusion),2 and d) crystal reorientation during diffusion in anisotropic systems.3 In the Al-Ni system4 and in the Al-u5 system parabolic growth kinetics are slowly approached after an initial transient period. In general those phases stable at a given temperature in a system A-B appear as separate phase layers when A and B are put in contact and given a diffusion he at-treatment. In most cases the compositions at the interface of adjacent phase layers are those read from the phase diagrams for the termini of the respective phases. This discontinuity in concentration is taken as independent of time, and the growth of one phase at the expense of another is assumed to be independent of interface kinetics, i.e., the rate of interface movement is controlled by volume diffusion in the phases concerned. wagner6 has given many solutions for multi-phase diffusion processes, assuming that the chemical diffusion coefficient, D, is independent of concentration, as have others. Jost7 has pointed out that the familiar Boltzmann-Matano solution is as valid for a (c-x) curve exhibiting concentration discontinuities at phase boundaries as for the usual single-phase case. Heumann and associates8,9 have applied this solution to the multi-phase case, but lacking concentration data within the several layers were forced to assume linear concentration gradients, thus calculating only average D-values. The purposes of the present study were: 1) to determine the dependence of D on concentration, 2) to calculate the intrinsic diffusion coefficients D?Cu and D?Zn, 3) to establish the time-law for the movement of the interface, 4) to determine the concentration limits at the ß-? interface, and, 5) to attempt to clarify the mechanism of diffusion. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The ? phase is exceedingly brittle; conventional solid couples and conventional sectioning methods were thus inapplicable. Vapor-solid couples were accordingly employed. Unfortunately the equilibrium vapor pressures of Zn for the ? phase are unknown; to escape this awkwardness, samples were enclosed in a capsule containing powder of an alloy of known composition, sufficiently large in quantity as to be effectively an infinite source, maintaining the concentration of Zn at the sample surface constant with time. The sources of Zn-vapor which can be employed in reaction with Cu, or a brass, or ß brass, to form a layer of ? brass satisfactorily wide in concentration range, are alloys of the phases ?, or ? + E or ? + d (depending on the temperature).

LOCAL yearly taxes levied on bituminous coal lands in Pennsylvania have become a cost of first importance to the coal industry of the State. In Pennsylvania there is no State tax on real estate, but local taxation of real estate furnishes the greater part of the revenue necessary for the small governmental unit, as counties, townships, boroughs, and local school, road, and poor districts. Coal in place in the ground, whether or not title thereto has been severed from ownership of the surface, is assessed as real estate and on its supposed sale or market value. There are eight classes of counties in Pennsylvania, based on population; in populous counties of the first, second and third class, assessments are made by a county board appointed by the county commissioners and are fairly uniform throughout the county. In counties of the fourth to the eighth classes inclusive, property assessments are made by property assessors elected by and for each township within a county. In these counties the board of county commissioners acts as a board of equalization and review to hear appeals. In most counties, therefore, where there is a large unmined reserve of coal, assessments on that coal vary for each township, irrespective of the fact that the coal bed is continuous under many townships.

INTRODUCTION Because large aqueous suspensions of various fine solids originate during the beneficiation of ores, the Mining Industry constantly requires efficient and feasible dewatering methods. Among the techniques currently in use (1,2), filtration (vacuum, press) and centrifugation are fairly expensive and thus are limited to use with more valuable materials. Furthermore, installations of reasonable size produce only moderate outputs. Therefore, tailings from ore dressing plants are usually treated by sedimentation or settling techniques with a tailings dam as the ultimate sedimentation basin (3). Apart from growing environmental and economic questions, the solid product obtained from the tailings dam basin has in most cases, a rather high moisture content and a persistent semi-fluid consistency. Thus, it is difficult to transport and use further. On the other hand, the solids may be utilized as a filling material, fertilizer, etc. providing they are dry enough and properly granulated. Demands for an improved technique are met to a great extent, by the technique presented in this paper. AGGLOMERATION OF FLOCCIJLATED SLIMES Origin and Qualitative Description of the Process Phenomena of consolidation and pellet formation in flocculated fines were first observed by Yusa and Gaudin (4) while studying rheological properties of flocculated kaolinite. On this basis, methods of separating liquid from solids have been worked out (5-7) and many possibilities for application have been suggested (5,6). Yusa termed the technique "wet pelletization''.

This paper presents a method for making a water-rlrive ana1gsis without prior knowledge of aquifer geometry and uniformity using a standard desk calculator. Although it is necessary to know the initial oil in place to use this method, this is a minor limitation to the scope of (he method since in most reservoirs it is possible to obtain reasonably accurate volumetric oil-in-place estimates. An equation is developed which relates pressure at the water-oil contact to the water influx rate as a function of time by a factor called the resistance function. The resistance function introduces the composite effect of the aquifer geometry and flow resistance disrribution. It is pointed out that the characteristic shape of this function makes it possible to start with on approximation of the function and successively improve the approximation until the correct resistance function curve is obtained. In this fashion water-drive estimates can be made without the limitation of assuming simplifed aquifer shapes and flow distributions. This is the novel feature of this development. Methods are given for extrapolating the final curve to calculate future aquifer behavior. Equations are developed for adjusting the pressures and water influx rates where it appears that possible errors in these quantities make it difficult or impossible to obtain a useuble resistance function curve without this adjustment. Application of the pressure build-up analysis techiiique to estimate. some of the aquifer properties is also presented INTRODUCTION A great many oil pools are the result of oil accumulation in some type of trap in an otherwise large and continuous porous stratum. The void space of this stratum outside of the oil pool itself is filled with water or brine. In analyzing performance of the oil pool surrounded by this water aquifer, it is quite necessary. in most cases, to include behavior of the water. When the pressure at any point in a fluid system is lowered, such as by opening a well in an oil sand, fluids in the immediate neighborhood of this point will begin flowing towards this lower pressure sink. As pressure in this area drops due to flow towards the sink, fluids from farther out will start to flow towards the lower pressure. As more and more fluid is removed from the system, the distance from the sink or well within which flow is occurring will continually increase; that is, thc region of disturbance will grow. If some rigid boundary such as a fault is reached by the disturbance, this area will cease to grow; but if some movable boundary is reached, such as a water-oil contact, the area will grow on out into the water, although rate of growth may and almost always does change. The relation between amount of pressure drop and amount of fluid flowing at any point and at any time in an aquifer depends on such factors as compressibility and viscosity of the fluids, the porosity and permeability of the rock, geometry of the whole system and withdrawal rate or pressure drop. With these factors known, it is theoretically possible to calculate the pressure-flow behavior of the system, However, in practice true solutions to the problem are next to impossible due to complexity of reservoir systems. A number of approximate methods of solution have been developed based on various simplifying assumptions. One frequent assumption is that the water-oil contact can be located and equations defining oil reservoir and aquifer solved separately by assigning values to various parameters so as to match past pressure and production history. Usually the properties of the aquifer are not known, since few, if any, wells are drilled through the aquifer; but the water influx and the pressure at the reservoir boundary are known over some time. If it can now be assumed that the aquifer is circular, pie-shaped, or linear, and that it has uniform properties, it is possible to fit a theoretical dimensionless curve to the past aquifer performance history and therefore calculate future water drive. These theoretical curves are available in the literature,1,2,3 Of course, the assumption of uniform aquifer properties is almost always somewhat in error. Fortunately, however, moderate variations from the average have little effect on behavior of the system; and, hence, the best fit of a theoretical curve is frequently satisfactory. In other cases variations in aquifer properties and geometry are large enough that none of the available theoretical curves will give an acceptable fit of the data. The importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.l It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a, new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Ressemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstatten figures.4 Osmond Observed structures in a steel ingot analog-ous to those found in meteorites. Russia's first "Petaletka'' has ended. Technically it did not succeed but practically it has been a great achievement in the petroleum industry. Out of the chaos of revolution and civil war Russia has developed her oil industry to second place in the world's production. For 1932 production of crude oil is estimated at 150,000,000 bbl. and refined products at 145,000,000 barrels. Russia has been able to give the petroleum industry every advantage that a government can extend to a fast growing industry. She has obtained all of her property by confiscation. Under government ownership, operation and control, her petroleum industry is not handicapped in any way by state rulings or by unnecessary competition in production, refining and marketing. There are no damage suits resulting from offsetting, flooding, repressuring, laying of pipe lines, building of docks or other necessary work. Russian oil fields2 have been easy to develop and operate. They lie advantageously to transportation for foreign markets. The chief disadvantages have been a lack of credit and technical cooperation, but the former is being overcome by the sacrifice of the people. They go without the comforts of life that all salable articles may be exported for the imports of modern machinery. Modern machinery is fast replacing the obsolete and worn-out equipment. Technical cooperation has been difficult because it has been necessary to train thousands of adults to do technical and mechanical work. Great quantities of pipe, tools and electrical equipment were necessary for the rapidly developing fields and refineries. The supplies have been inadequate and the quality poor. This lack of equipment, along with the untrained technical supervision, has been the cause of the proposed quota falling short. Fig. 1 shows the production for 1931 and 1932. During 1932 a large percentage of the oil was produced in the proven fields of the Caucasus.

The two principal methods of room-and-pillar mining practiced at White Pine make it important to predict variations in the thickness and rock types of a stratum called the upper sandstone. In full column mining, the nearly barren upper sandstone occurs between two ore horizons (called upper shale and parting shale, respectively), and is mined as a part of the ore column. In general, full column mining is not practiced where excessive upper sandstone thickness causes full column ore grade to be substantially lower than parting shale ore. In parting shale mining, the upper sandstone forms the mine roof. Difficulty in predicting upper sandstone character arose because the extent and directions of its variations were not apparent in the property's diamond drilling, in which holes are spaced on 1000-ft centers. A study of sedimentary features, undertaken to improve the predictability of trends in the upper sandstone, led to an interpretation of the sedimentary environment in which the sandstone was deposited. Ripple marks, mud cracks, and cross-bedding, as well as other, less well known features, such as channel casts, flute casts, and current crescent casts, were mapped or recorded. These data, coupled with the knowledge of regional facies changes gained from studying drill core, show that the upper sandstone was deposited by a series of streams flowing northeastward over the underlying parting shale. Deposition of the lowermost bed of the upper sandstone, near the ancient shoreline, was locally preceded by erosion of the parting shale, and the greatest thicknesses of sandstone are found in channels scoured out of the parting shale. Awareness of the rather strong linear trends in the upper sandstone makes it possible to project continuous areas of thick upper sandstone through apparently isolated "highs" in the upper sandstone thickness contour map, which is based on drill-hole information. Since local exceptions to general stratigraphic trends exist, a method was also needed for esti- mating, in detail, the thickness and degree of shali-ness of upper sandstone forming the roof in active parting shale mining areas. Because locally the parting shale was thinned by erosion during the deposition of upper sandstone, parting shale thickness is inversely proportional to upper sandstone thickness. Utilizing information taken from short drill holes into the roof, curves were constructed for the correlation of parting shale thickness (measurable in the mine) with the upper sandstone total thickness, as well as the thickness of its basal member. The White Pine mine is situated in Ontonagon County, approximately 6 miles south of Lake Superior, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Fig. 1). The orebody mined by White Pine Copper Co. occurs in the lowermost 20 to 25 ft of the Nonesuch formation, a series of middle- to upper-Keweenawan shales, siltstones, and sandstones. This paper discusses the solution of problems in ore grade control and mine planning arising from the presence of an essentially barren sandstone stratum within the orebody. THE OREBODY AND MINING TYPES A brief description of the orebody and mining methods is necessary to show how the upper sandstone affects mine planning and grade control. In the mine, the cupriferous zone of the Nonesuch shale is divided into three major portions, as shown in Fig. 2. Lying conformably on top of the Copper Harbor formation (or "lower sandstone") is the lower part of the orebody, the parting shale. The parting shale is overlain by the upper sandstone. On top of the upper sandstone, the basal portion (8 ft) of the upper shale is quite similar to the parting shale. Both the upper shale and parting shale are divided into a number of smaller stratigraphic units, each having a characteristic copper content, as shown by the histogram of Fig. 2. Other authors1'3 have dealt in detail with the stratigraphy and mineralogy of the orebody. However, in this article, we are concerned with the major subdivisions only, and it will suffice to note the low copper content of the upper sandstone, shown in Fig. 2. The interaction between British gum 9084 and dode-cylammonium chloride (DAC) at quartz and hematite surfaces was established from coadsorption studies and streaming potential measurements. The cationic DAC interacts with the somewhat anionic British gum 9084, leading to the formation and adsorption of a binary complex of DAC-British Gum 9084 at the interface. The parallel ability to depress quartz along with hematite as a result of the interaction between DAC and British gum appears to be the main reason for the ineffective depressant action of starches and starch derivatives in the cationic flotation of iron ores. Amines are not particularly selective collectors for the flotation' of siliceous gangue from iron ores and, therefore, a suitable iron oxide depressant is needed for a satisfactory separation. Various starches and their derivatives have been extensively tested with oxidized iron ores,'-3 and it has been empirically established that British gums and dextrins are preferable. However, for the flotation upgrading of magnetite-taconite concentrates from 8 or 8.5% Si O2 to about 5% Si 02, British gums, which have been used so successfully on oxidized iron ores, have been found to have no effect and oftentimes are actually deleterious.4 In previous articles,5-7, starches were shown by adsorption measurements, flotation tests, and floccula-tion tests to interact with calcium ions in solution, and it was thought that a study on the interaction between starches and dodecylammonium ions would be able to shed some light on the anomalous flotation behavior described above. In fact, starches are known to interact markedly with paraffin-chain-type surface active agents and, thereby, to precipitate the starch or inhibit the iodine-starch reaction.8 From X-ray diffraction studies and viscosity measurements, the formation of a helical complex between mylose and a surface active agent has been postulated.9 The interaction with other types of hydrophilic colloids, such as synthetic polymers and proteins, has also been investigated and is usually explained in terms of van der Waals' force interaction and/or ion-ion interaction. In the present investigation, the interaction of British gum and dode cylammonium chloride on quartz and hematite was studied by adsorption and streaming potential measurements in an attempt to establish the mutual adsorption behavior of British gum and dode-cylammonium chloride on mineral surfaces and to clarify the anomalous depressant activity of British gum in the cationic flotation of iron ores. All the measurements were carried out at a natural pH of near 7 because dodecylammonium chloride gives maximum selectivity of flotation separation at this pH2 and to avoid any third parameter in the system. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Minerals: The quartz and hematite samples used for the adsorption tests were prepared as described in a previous paper,"J except that the specific surfaces of the samples were increased to 5,860 and 16,000 Sq cm per gm, respectively. For the streaming potential measurements, the 48165-mesh fractions screened out of the original samples were etched with hydrochloric acid, washed repeatedly with water, and stored under water in Pyrex bottles. Reagents:DodecyIammonium chloride (DAC) was prepared1 1 by bubbling dry hydrogen chloride gas through a benzene solution of high-purity dodecylamine supplied by Armour and Co. British gum 9084, received from Corn Products Co., was solubilized by first dispersing it in water to produce a 0.05% solution and then homogenizing it in a blender for 5 min. Distilled water was used in the preparation of the samples and the solutions and for all test work. Adsorption Measurements: The procedure for the adsorption density determinations was also the same as that described in the previous paper.1° The residual concentrations of the British gum and the DAC in the supernatant solution were analyzed colorimetrically by the phenol-sulf uric-acid and amine-picrate methods, respectively. The validity of the mine-picrate method for the colorimetric analysis of DAC in the presence of British gum and the analysis of British gum in presence of DAC were checked by establishing calibration curves between optical density and concentration. MUCH information on intermetallic diffusion has been obtained in experiments in which two volumes, initially at different uniform concentrations, are maintained in contact at an interface which is plane, or nearly so. Concentration-distance curves are obtained after suitable times, and analyzed on the basis of a one-dimensional form of Fick's law In early work the linear equation to which Eq. 1 reduces when D is independent of concentration was used. However, when the initial concentrations c, and c, are appreciably different this simplification is often unjustified, and the suggestion by Matanol in 1933 of a way of avoiding it was welcomed. Matano's paper was based on work done as early as 1882 by Boltzmann.2,3 In 1938 Rhines and Meh14 reported an extensive investigation of systems in which the diffusion coefficient depends strongly on concentration, and included a detailed description of the Matano-Boltz-mann method. To a large degree, this description represents the formal method as it is understood and applied today, most later discussions having emphasized thermodynamic and mechanistic aspects of diffusion. Exceptions are the comments of R. V. Churchill, contained in a paper by Ham, Parke and Herzig,5 and the papers by Hall8 and by Kirkaldy.7 More discussion appears necessary since some aspects of the problem remain obscure. Better computational procedures are also needed. The common method, involving graphical determination of slopes and areas, is inconvenient and makes the estimation of errors difficult. The outstanding engineering accomplishment of the last three decades has been the development and application of more and cheaper power and its use instead of the labor of men and animals. Substitution of power for manual labor has taken effect on every hand in the United States. With the aid of energy mechanically available to his hand, one man does the work that only a few years ago required two, three or even a greater number of laborers. The results in respect to the favorable economic effects are well known; namely, increased production, higher wages and lower costs. On the other hand, the vast social effects, both good and bad, have been none the less important, even if less understood and only casually regarded. The chief sources of energy today are the mineral fuels, coal and petroleum. In the United States they yield more than 90 per cent of the total energy demand. Thirty years ago the proportion of energy supplied by the mineral fuels was likewise above 90 per cent, but the division according to origin was very different. These relations are shown for the years 1900, 1930 and 1950 in Table 1. Method or Preparation and Interpretation of Statistical Data The fuels comprised in this study are: (1) the coal group including both bituminous and anthracite coal; (2) the petroleum group, taking in not only petroleum but natural gas and natural-gas gasoline. Literature on the electrolysis of aluminum from cryolite melts and on the structure of these melts is surveyed critically. Data on density, freezing point, and other properties are reviewed. Theories of the electrolysis are examined in the light of these data. Two theories are presented which account equally well for the observations. ALTHOUGH the production of aluminum is a large-scale industrial process, consuming approximately 3 pet of all of the electric current generated in this country, the mechanism of the Hall Process remains a 70-year-old mystery. It is a remarkable fact that the aluminum industry, which was established largely through research and owes much of its growth to research, still employs as its basic process the one developed by Charles Martin Hall while he was still a young man working in a woodshed. There are, of course, modifications in detail and a tremendous expansion of the size of the units used, but basically the process employs carbon anodes and a carbon-lined iron vessel as a cathode for the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten salt. Of the almost infinite variety of salts available, the relatively minor Greenland mineral, cryolite, 3NaF.A1F3, is still the only one which gives good performance in the electrolysis. In the early days, the process was thought of as a simple one. The dissolved alumina dissociated and, during the electrolysis, the aluminum was carried to the cathode where it was discharged and collected in a pool of metal. The oxygen was carried to the carbon anode where it reacted to form primarily carbon dioxide together with some carbon monoxide. About the only virtue that can be claimed for this hypothesis is that of simplicity. The actual mechanisms must be tremendously more complex. This paper is devoted to a rather narrow part of the whole subject, namely, what ions are present in the bath, and by what mechanism the current is carried. The complexity of the literature on this system is demonstrated in Table I, which shows the ions postulated as being present during the process. This system is not easy to investigate. Cryolite melts at about 1000°C, so that all the investigations are at relatively high temperatures. Molten cryolite fumes in air, particularly if excess aluminum fluoride is present. The cryolite changes composition on heating at 1000°C, principally by reaction with moisture in the air, but apparently also by reaction with oxygen. Cryolite reacts with most of the customary materials of construction, and those that are not attacked by cryolite seem inevitably to react with molten aluminum. Graphite is the only common material that is inert to the electrolytic bath. Pure cryolite can be held in platinum. There is hope that some of the newer refractories will stand up in bath, and their development for this purpose would be a major advance in the field. The techniques to be discussed, then, are not the most advanced ones. Rather, they are examples of old standardized methods applied under difficult conditions. The principal methods that shed real light on the mechanism are density, electrical conductivity, freezing-point lowering, transport number, viscosity measurements, and reactivity of bath with carbon dioxide. The first measurement to be discussed is density. This procedure is relatively straightforward. A hollow platinum bob is suspended by fine platinum wire from an analytical balance into the melt being investigated. Density1-4 of the system sodium fluoride-aluminum fluoride is shown in Fig. 1. There is a maximum in the density near the cryolite composition, but actually the maximum is on the NaF-rich side of cryolite, close to the composition NaF - Na3AlF8. Density measurements are also useful in giving a clue to the nature of cryolite-alumina melts.1, 4 On the first addition of alumina, density decreases, Fig. 2, although the density of alumina, either solid or liquid, is higher than that of cryolite. These density results indicate that the systems are not simple. A great deal of effort has been spent in measuring the electrical conductivity of molten cryolite and of cryolite with various additives. Conductivity measurements are quite easy for fused salts that can be measured in a dip cell, but no successful dip cell has been made available yet for cryolite. Recourse is had

A TOTAL eclipse of the sun is a brief, exciting spectacle witnessed by most men but once or twice during a lifetime. But to an astronomer an eclipse of the sun is an event of utmost scientific importance. For then, certain phenomena of the sun normally obscured by the brilliant glare of sunlight become spectacularly visible. For over seventy years prior to 1930 astronomers vainly attempted to discover a means of observing all of these eclipse features of the sun without a natural eclipse. But in 1930, through the genius of the French scientist, Bernard Lyot, astronomers met final success. Dr. Lyot invented a new kind of telescope known as a coronagraph, which made possible photography of all of the eclipse features of the sun. In 1940 Harvard University completed final testing of its Lyot-type coronagraph. the only one in the Western Hemisphere, and shipped it to Climax, where Donald H. Menzel, of Harvard College Observatory, supervised its establishment on the southeastern edge of the mining community of the Climax Molybdenum Co., with whose help and advice the modern residence and telescope dome of the observatory were constructed. Ever since that summer the station has been operated by me, first as a graduate student, and now as a staff member of Harvard College Observatory.

MAGNETIC torque studies of ferromagnetic single crystals have been carried out in a number of laboratories during the last decade1,2 and some work has been reported on polycrystalline material showing preferred orientation. Goss3 used the method extensively in developing electrical sheet with desirable magnetic properties, but he used it as a control rather than as a means of studying the texture. Bozorth4 made a quantitative correlation of a torque curve he obtained from some cold-rolled iron with the texture as determined from X-rays, but did not extend his studies beyond the one specimen. Other studies, which have been reported from time to time 1.5 have also been incomplete in the sense that no effort was made to study a whole series of samples, differing only in degree of cold reduction, or in the annealing temperature, in order to ascertain the effect of such treatments on the texture as revealed by torque measurements. It is the purpose of this investigation to make such a study, mainly in order to see how useful the method can be made when used under favorable circumstances and to find what kind of a correlation can be expected between magnetic and X-ray studies of texture. Before proceeding further, it is desirable to say a little about single crystals, so as to make clear the concepts involved in magnetic torque measurements.

John L. Miles (Arthur D. Little, 1nc.)—Pollack and orris" have reported measurements on electron tunneling through A1-A12O3-A1 sandwiches in which the oxide was formed by gaseous oxidation in a glow discharge. From these measurements they deduced the asymmetry of the barrier and, since this is small, conclude that the mechanism suggested by Mott19 for the growth of oxide in thin A12O3 films is inapplicable. In earlier papers20 Pollack and Morris report similar work for oxide films grown thermally. In this case they find a greater asymmetry and conclude that the Mott mechanism is valid. I would like to point out that both these conclusions are quite unjustified. Mott suggests that the growth of the oxide film on aluminum results from the passage of ions through the already present film of oxide under the action of an electric field. This field results from a constant voltage which is in effect a contact potential between metal on one side of the barrier and adsorbed oxygen ions on the other side of the barrier. The theory does not require that the oxide grown is nonuniform either in stoichiometry or structure. It does however specifically assume that the partial layer of ionized oxygen on the surface remains adsorbed on the surface of the growing oxide. In other words, the so-called "built-in field" remains in the oxide only as long as the ionized oxygen is present. When a counter electrode of aluminum is deposited on the oxide, it will react with the adsorbed oxygen on the surface of the oxide, thus forming a small additional amount of oxide. It is clear, then, that there is no requirement in the Mott theory of oxide growth which would necessitate tunneling currents through an Al-A1203-A1 sample to be different when the polarity is reversed. Neither does the theory eliminate the possibility that some additional mechanism could cause the tunneling barrier to be asymmetric and hence tunneling currents to be a function of polarity in such a sandwich. Thus these tunneling-currents measurements are not germane to the question of whether the Mott mechanism is the true method of growth of aluminum oxide films. In fact, it is not surprising that there should be a difference between the oxide properties at the two interfaces (with resulting asymmetry in the tunneling barrier) since the growth conditions and growth rates must have been quite different at these two positions. S. R. Pollack and C. E. Morris (authors' reply)— The point raised by Miles above is one has caused some confusion in the past. The following is an attempt to clarify this point. The built-in field which is responsible for the growth of the thermal oxide at low temperatures arises, according to Mott, because of the passage of electrons from the Fermi surface of the oxidizing metal to surface states introduced by the adsorbed oxygen. It is assumed that the energy of these surface states lies below the Fermi energy of the metal. Electrons therefore continue to flow from the metal to the surface until the built-in electric field raises the potential energy of the surface states to the value of the Fermi energy in the metal, at which time equilibrium is obtained between the surface states and the metal. That is in equilibrium as many excess electrons pass from the metal to the surface per unit time as vice versa. The surface of the oxide prior to deposition of a metallic counterelectrode can then be pictured as follows. The Fermi energy lies in the energy gap of the oxide and is essentially pinned at the energy of the oxygen surface states. The vacuum work function of the oxide is then given by the sum of the electron affinity of the oxide (i.e., the difference in energy between the vacuum and the conduction-band minimum) plus the energy difference between the conduction-band minimum and the Fermi energy. The deposition of a metal onto the surface of the oxide can result in a transfer of electrons across the extremely thin oxide only if there is a contact potential difference between the deposited metal and the parent metal or oxide. That is if the vacuum work function of the deposited metal differs from that of the parent metal, then charge can be redistributed across the oxide in order to equilibriate the Fermi energy across the structure. THERE is probably no phase of basic open-hearth steelmaking that is more of an art and less of a science than mold and pouring practice. It varies widely from plant to plant; consequently it is obviously impossible to set down in detail in this chapter the many ramifications of practice that are now used. The discussion that follows therefore attempts only to give an outline of the more common methods, with examples sufficient to indicate some of the variations in procedure, and to emphasize a few of the many underlying problems that face the open-hearth operator at the pouring platform. MOLD DESIGN Ingot molds are hollow castings of considerable wall thickness. Despite this, non-uniformity in wall thickness should be strictly avoided to prevent the setting up of unnecessary stresses. Molds are cast in various forms, sizes, and shapes depending on the type of steel, and on whether the ingot is to be withdrawn from the mold or the mold from the ingot. The selection of ingot-mold material, which is usually cupola or blast-furnace iron containing approximately 3.5 per cent carbon, 1 per cent silicon, 0.9 per cent manganese, 0.2 per cent phosphorus, and 0.07 per cent sulphur, is governed by numerous considerations that affect mold life. (1) Factors in addition to wall thickness that should be given primary consideration at the foundry are casting skin, shrinkage stresses, and casting temperature. Factors in Mold Design. In use, mold thickness is of greatest importance, for it must be heavy enough to freeze the molten metal rising in the mold and to reduce the temperature of the steel below that of the melting point of cast iron to prevent the inner surface of the mold from melting, which would result in the welding of the ingot to the mold. The skin of an ingot, which solidities immediately upon contact with the relatively cold walls of the mold, must soon become thick enough to contract on the fluid mass and pull away slightly from the sides of the mold. The separation of the ingot from the mold depends entirely on the heat taken up by the mold from the steel.

THE history and efficiency of 40-ton capacity dump trucks for surface waste removal at the New Cornelia opencut copper mine, at Ajo, Ariz., are summed up in this paper. Tabulations of truck performance, together with detailed cost figures, prove the value of truck transportation for certain special operations at a large mine. Emphasis is given to the fact that truck transportation not only reduces the haulage costs but also reduces the breaking ground and shovel-loading costs per ton. The New Cornelia opencut copper mine is in the desert. The climate is ideal for seven months of the year, but the five summer months are uncomfortably hot. The elevation is 1820 ft. above sea level and the annual rainfall is approximately 6 inches. The ore body is a monzonite-porphyry deposit. The waste-rock capping consists of hard rhyolite, conglomerate and porphyry. All the material is hard and cannot be excavated without blasting. The rhyolite and conglomerate waste is very blocky. The weight of the rock in place is 2.16 tons per cubic yard. The average mine production per day is 22,000 tons of ore and 18,000 tons of waste rock, the latter consisting of surface rock and material within the ore body too low in grade to send to the concentrator. The rock is loaded by electric shovels with 4 ½ -cu. yd. dippers. The primary transportation of ore to the concentrator and waste to the dumps is by 30-yd. dump cars and oil-burning steam locomotives; therefore truck haulage of waste is a minor factor of the New Cornelia operation. However, as New Cornelia was one of the first mines to use large-capacity dump trucks for haulage, the results obtained are of interest. EQUIPMENT On the south side of the New Cornelia is a hill rising about 500 ft. above the normal surface elevation, roughly 1000 ft. in diameter at its base, called locally Arkansas Mountain peak. Exploratory drilling in this area developed additional ore that could be made accessible for open pit operation only by moving the mountain face a maximum distance of 400 ft. to the south. The slope of the mountain adjacent to the pit averaged 35°, and the small area involved precluded the use of train haulage for the removal of the 4,000,000 tons of waste estimated above the normal pit elevation. A study of dump-truck haulage at Boulder Dam and San Gabriel Dam led to the decision to use large-capacity end-dump trucks rather than smaller trucks, for the following reasons: 1. The truck would have to withstand the impact of hard, heavy chunks, some of them weighing as much as 10 tons, which would be dumped from the 4 ½ -cu. yd. dipper. 2. The coarse, rocky, abrasive material would soon damage a light truck body. 3. The body of a small truck could not be efficiently loaded with coarse rock.
