LMENITE, rutile, zircon, and other heavy minerals are found in small amounts in the sand that covers most of Florida. Small enriched deposits occur on the beaches and coastal dunes. One beach deposit east of Jacksonville was worked during World War I and another near Vero Beach during World War 11. Both ceased operation when the resumption of imports reduced prices. Early in World War II reduction of rutile imports made a domestic source of the mineral necessary to maintain the expansion of armaments. Explorations made near Jacksonville discovered a relatively large body of low-grade ore about 10 miles inland from the beaches. A plant installed by Rutile Mining Co. of Florida using both flotation and tables encountered difficulties because of low plant capacity and organic slimes in the ore. In 1944 Humphreys Gold Corp. solved the problem of concentrating the low-grade ore by using the newly developed Humphreys spiral concentrator and by mining with a hydraulic dredge. This combination of low cost mining and concentration permitted the plant to continue operation in competition with foreign ores when imports were resumed following the war. The success of the Jacksonville operation renewed interest in Florida as a source of titanium. An extensive survey of the state was made by E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Inc., under the direction of J. L. Gillson in 1945 to 1946. Sampling was carried on by drive pipe drilling to depths of 20 to 25 ft. Encouraging values were discovered near the location of the present Trail Ridge mine, 50 miles southwest of Jacksonville, near the town of Starke. The United States Bureau of Mines was interested in exploring for heavy minerals in Florida, and on the recommendation of both the state geologist of Florida and of Du Pont geologists, drilled deeper where marginal indications were found on Trail Ridge. In 1947 it was discovered that sufficiently higher values occurred at depth to make the deposit commercial. The orebody at Trail Ridge is a long sand deposit averaging about 1 mile in width and 35 ft in depth. It is approximately 1 1/2 miles wide at the north end of the portion now being worked, tapering to a blunt point 3 miles to the south. The ore reaches a maximum depth of 65 ft near the center and feathers out into barren sand at the edges. The ground surface is relatively flat and is covered with vegetation including pine, scrub oak, palmetto, and occasionally in swampy areas, cypress. The remain of a dense woody growth underlies and marks the bottom of the Ore 'One. It is difficult to drill through this layer, but in some cases where it is less than 5 ft thick it has been possible to drive through the wood. Sand lying below is coarser than that in the ore zone and contains no values. THE importance of the Donets coal field (the Donbas) to the national economy of the Soviet Union is well known. Great as was the significance of this tremendous deposit of coal in prewar days it is destined to become an even greater factor in the economic life of the country now that the tremendous havoc wrought by the Germans is being remedied. Since the war began, new coal fields have been extended; for example output of the Moscow and Karaganda (Kazakhstan) fields has become considerably larger while new mines are producing coal in several parts of Uzbekistan and Kirghizia. The huge West Siberian coal field, the Kuznetsk Basin, is producing more coal than ever before to supply the industries of that region and of the Urals. But so great has been the development of industry to meet war needs, especially in those districts of the Soviet Union that lie to the East of the Urals, that the coal obtained, eked out by such locally-won fuels as peat and wood, is still barely sufficient to meet industrial requirements. The main burden of the coal supply for the restored industries of the West, therefore, will fall on the Donbas.

One of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production since its commercial development in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experimenting on the extraction of zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained British Patent No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode material in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electro-deposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must, be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electro-deposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as are the copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality. Reasons advanced for the ease with which deposits may be stripped from the aluminum surface are: (1) presence of a permanent oxide coating on the metal, (2) failure of aluminum to alloy with the deposit, (3) differences in coefficient of expansion, (4) high position of aluminum in the electromotive scries of metals. Of these reasons for nonadherence, which may have some application in general deposition, probably the oxide coating has the greatest bearing on the subject of zinc deposition. ZINC is one of the effective elements introduced to enhance the strength of aluminum. This strengthening is principally attributable to the high solid solubility of zinc in aluminum and the pronounced variation of solubility with temperature. Consequently an accurate determination of the solid solubility curve is desirable. The solid solubility relations have been studied by numerous investigators. Shepherd' first established the existence of a solid solution region at the aluminum end of the diagram (y phase) by specific volume and microscopic determinations. Bauer and Vogel2 published a constitutional diagram which showed the limits of solid solubility as determined by thermal and microscopic methods. Hanson and Gayler3 presented the aluminum-zinc diagram which is now most generally accepted (Fig. 1). Chill-cast samples were given thermal treatments designed to obtain equilibrium conditions, quenched, and microscopically examined.. The solubility was placed between 15 to 20 per cent at 600 C., 20 to 22 per cent at 140° C. and 36 to 38 per cent at 270° C. Sander and Meissner4 decidedly modified the limits of they phase field of Hanson and Gayler's diagram by using similar methods on chill-cast specimens annealed for a shorter period of time. Tanabe,5 utilizing dynamic hardness, electrical conductivity and dilatometric measurements of specimens at temperature, obtained values comparable to Hanson and Gayler's at room temperature, but appreciably lower at higher temperatures. Nishimura6 concluded from age-hardening results of aluminum-zinc alloy chill castings, which had been quenched from 400° to 500° C., that the solubility of zinc in aluminum at room temperature is less than 5

The variation of binary-diffusion coefficients with composition in the liquid Bi-Sn system at 300°C was measured using the capillary-reservoir technique. The experimental coefficients did not exhibit a simple composition dependence. A number of tests were also made to determine the effect of variation of density with composition on convection within the capillaries. These tests indicate that the density changes arising from composition duferences may give rise to high diffusion coefficients unless care is taken to maintain a stable configuration. In recent years there has been considerable interest in diffusion in liquid metals. However, the bulk of the work done to date has involved measurements of self-diffusion or diffusion of dilute concentrations of "solute" metals. Because there are possible applications to liquid phase processing of metal alloys and since additional data may help to clarify the nature of diffusion in liquid metals, investigations of the concentration variation of diffusion coefficients in binary alloys have been undertaken. Of past studies only two have covered large ranges of binary composition. Niwa et al.' investigated the Pb-Sn, Bi-Pb, and Bi-Sn systems and Grace and Derge2 investigated the Bi-Pb system. Because of the discrepancy between the data of these investigators, it was deemed desirable to check the possibility of convection arising from the variation of density with composition. The capillary-reservoir technique of Anderson and saddington3 was chosen for the present investigation since it has been widely used for measurements involving dilute solute concentrations and it was the technique used by Grace and Derge.2 It was necessary, however, to modify the normal procedure of using a pure metal bath to avoid measurement of integral diffusion coefficients over large concentration ranges. The alloy system chosen for study was the Bi-Sn system for which there are some data available.' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In order to utilize the capillary-reservoir technique for measurements of diffusion coefficients as a function of composition, it was necessary to modify the normal procedure slightly. This modification consisted of using a reservoir composition which was only slightly different from that in the set of capillaries, in order that the integral coefficients measured might be taken over a small composition range and might thereby be assumed to approximate the differential coefficient at some average composition between that of the capillary and that of the bath. It was found that a composition difference of approximately 0.10 mass fraction provided a satisfactory compromise between a small increment in composition and reasonable accuracy in measuring changes of composition. The alloys were prepared from tin and bismuth of 99.999 pct purity. The materials were first cleaned of surface oxides, then weighed and melted to form a homogeneous alloy in a Pyrex filling apparatus. The capillaries used were of precision bore Pyrex tubing 1.000 *0.005 mm bore. Capillaries of various lengths (from 2.85 to 5.85 cm) were cut and sealed at one end by fusing a 3-mm Pyrex rod to the end. The capillaries were filled by inserting them into the filling chamber, evacuating the chamber, submerging the capillaries, and pressurizing the chamber with argon. Two sets of capillaries were prepared for each run. One set contained an alloy more dense than the bath alloy and one set a less dense alloy. This procedure was followed so that the effect of density difference on the measurement could be determined. After filling one set of capillaries, these were placed open end up in a capillary holder and transferred to the diffusion chamber which consisted of a Pyrex tube inserted into a graphite block. The second set of capillaries was then filled and placed into the diffusion chamber. The reservoir alloy, which had been melted in a separate crucible, then was poured carefully into the diffusion chamber. Sufficient reservoir alloy was used to cover all capillaries to a depth of several centimeters. All of these operations: capillary filling, melting of alloys, and diffusion anneal, were carried out in a fused-salt bath which maintained a temperature of 300"*1°C. In Part I, a study of pressure build-up curves calculated for conditions under which both oil and gas flow led to the conclusion that the presence of a dispersed free gas phase in an oil reservoir must be taken into consideration to estimate accurately average reservoir pressure and permeability from build-up curves. Familiar methods based on the assumption of no free gas can be extended to the two-phase case by using total compressibility and mobility in place of single-fluid compressibility and mobility. These methods give correct values for average pressure and permeability when gas saturation is small. Errors become larger as the gas saturation increases. However, for the use to which the results will be put, the methods are satisfactory for reservoir engineering purposes. An improved method of calculating the performance of depletion-type reservoirs is presented in Part 2. Because the mathematical relationships describing simultaneous flow of oil and gas are quite involved. simplifying assumptions are made to provide means of obtaining approximate solutions of reasonable accuracy. One such approximate method now in use is the constant-GOR solution. It involves the assumption that at any instant, the ratio of total gas flow rate (both free and disolved) to oil flow rate is the same at all points in the reservoir. The approach is not applicable unless the free gar saturation in the reservoir is everywhere greater than the critical gas saturation. This paper presents a modification which, by avoiding the constant-GOR assumption, makes the method applicable to all reservoir conditions, and so far appears to be more accurate than the constant-GOR solution and to he comparable in required compuctation time. PART I— BUILD-UP CURVE ANALYSIS INTRODUCTION Pressure build-up characteristics of shut-in wells have been used for many years by engineers to evaluate average reservoir pressure, effective permeability thickness of the pay section, effectiveness of well completion (skin effect) and reservoir size. A number of methods of analysis have appeared from time to time."" Without exception, these methods are based on the assumption that the reservoir contains but one fluid of constant small compressibility and constant mobility. It has been suggesteda" hat these single-fluid methods may be applied to data from reservoirs containing both oil and gas by substitution of some effective total properties of the multiphase system in place of the corresponding single-phase properties. The present investigation was undertaken primarily to evaluate this approach. METHOD A number of theoretical build-up curves were calculated for conditions of two-phase flow, under the assumption of certain reservoir and fluid properties, and were analyzed by single-fluid methods with appropriate total compressibility and total mobility values for the corresponding single-fluid properties. Results of the analyses were compared with the assumed conditions. The theoretical build-up curves were completed by procedures similar to those of West, Garvin and Sheldon." Since these calculations require a considerable amount of computer time, an attempt was made to derive an approximate calculation method. The attempt was unsuccessful for calculating build-up curves, but the effort did result in a new approximate method of calculating the performance of solution gas drive reservoirs, which appears to be an improvement over the constant-GOR method" used previously (see Part 2). The West, Garvin and Sheldon calculations involved the following assumptions: (1) the reservoir is circular and completely bounded, with a completely penetrating well at its center; (2) the porous medium is uniform and iso-tropic, with a constant water saturation at all points; (3) gravity effects can be neglected; (4) compressibility of rock and water can be neglected; (5) the composition and equilibrium are constant for oil and gas; (6) the same pressure exists in both the oil phase and the gas phase; and (7) no afterproduction occurs, i.e., the well is shut in at the sand face for build-up. These assumptions make it possible to describe two-phase flow of oil and gas by the partial differential equations:

IN Bessemer-steel practice, air is blow, through a bath of iron, or projected strongly upon its surface to burn out silicon, manganese, and carbon. Toward the end of the blow, when the iron is not protected. from oxidation by these elements and the excess of air becomes great, there is oxidation of the iron. In open-hearth practice, the same difficulty is experienced with dissolved gas and oxides in the product, though not to as great or severe a degree as in the Bessemer process because the oxidizing conditions grow less severe as the end of the heat is approached, and if the bath is allowed to boil for a time it undoubtedly frees itself from a large part of the gas and oxides which have been absorbed in the earlier part of the process. Basic open-hearth steel is usually assumed to contain a larger proportion of oxides than acid open-hearth steel, but it may be said that all steel, Bessemer and open-hearth, contains more or less oxide of iron dissolved in the fluid metal at the end of the "blow" or "heat." That certain metals are solvents for their respective oxides has been shown, in the case of copper, by Heyn, and, in the case of iron, by Law. It is indicated that the solubility of iron oxide in iron increases with the purity and temperature of the metal. This confirms what is observed and known by operating men, and these observations may be summarized as follows: 1. Cast irons is rarely subject to oxidation, as is logical from its composition. 2. Normal steel, unless deoxidizers are added, contains blow holes. 3. Steel known to be oxidized is full of blow holes. 4. The addition of deoxidizers prevents, to a greater or less degree, the formation of blow holes in normal steel. With these observations in mind, it is logical to deduce that the cause of blowholes lies in part in the presence of dissolved oxide of. iron in the

Results of a Debye-Scherrer X-ray investigation are given which show that the order-disorder transformation is a first-order or heterogeneous reaction in Cu-AU alloys with compositions near CuAu. Evidence was found for conventional tie-line segregation across a usual type of two-phase field separating the ordered and disordered fields in the Cu-Au equilibrium phase diagram. The horizontal and vertical widths of the two-phase fields are about 3 atomic pct and 20°C, respectively, at 43 and 54 atomic pct Au. No evidence for the existence of an ordered structure based on a stoichiometric composition of Cu3Au2 could be found. ALTHOUGH the modern theories relating the de-Agree of order of binary alloys to temperature and composition have met with considerable success, the nature of the transformation from the disordered state to the ordered state and vice versa has never been well understood. It has been assumed by some' that this is a second-order transformation, that is, a homogeneous change of state. Others2 hold that the transformation is first-order and that the effects characteristic of heterogeneous phase transformation apply. Since this subject is discussed in detail in a recent paper,' the arguments will not be repeated here. The present paper summarizes an experiment which was designed to distinguish between these two viewpoints for the case of Cu-Au alloys near the composition CuAu. The Cu-Au system is an important one because it furnishes prototype alloys, the behavior of which has formed the basis of much of the present-day order-disorder theory. It has recently been shown- hat in alloys near Cu3Au there is a temperature range within which the ordered and disordered states coexist in equilibrium and are distinguishable as separate phases. Therefore, the transformation must be first-order for these alloys. A similar demonstration for alloys near CuAu, however, has been lacking. Experimental Method Essentially the experiment consisted of equilibrating Cu-Au samples at various temperatures, quenching them in water to retain the high temperature states, and then examining them at room temperature for the coexistence of the ordered and disordered structures. The thermal gradient method of heat treatment- as used because it was important that all temperatures over the transformation range should be represented in the test. Briefly, this method consisted of holding a wire of the desired composition, sealed under vacuum in Pyrex, in a known temperature gradient for a long enough time to allow each part of the wire to assume the crystal structure characteristic of the temperature at which it was held. The temperature gradient was produced by inserting into an ordinary wire-wound cylindrical laboratory furnace, an 18 in. length of 1/8 in. ID ceramic tube which was heavily wrapped with asbestos. The furnace power was controlled by a Tag-liabue Celectray controller and a chromel-alumel thermocouple with the junction located on the heating elements. During the equilibrating treatment the widest variation of temperature within the gradient tube was approximately 4°C at the highest temperature. ONE of the most interesting features of the world's platinum situation has been the steady increase of Russian production, which had dropped to 11,000 oz. in 1920, but increased to 92,000 oz. in 1926, and to probably over 100,000 oz. for 1927. It is ex-pected that Russian production of platinum will, be-fore long, closely equal its pre-war production, or approximately 200,000 oz. annually. The world production before the war was around 250,000 oz.; that for 1925 has been estimated at 160,000 oz., and for 1926 probably 170,000 oz. The consump-tion of platinum has, however, decreased. The esti-mate of the International Selling Agency was a de-mand of 130,000 oz. new platinum against a normal pre-war demand of over 200,000 oz. The high price of platinum during the war gave an added impetus to the search for substitutes for the metal, and sev-eral were developed that are now used extensively in place of platinum. The demand for platinum for high-class jewelry, however, was not greatly affected by the high prices, but "white" gold did replace platinum in the cheaper jewelry. Colombia is the most important producer of plati-num, next to Russia, and the production has increased from around 10,000 oz. pre-war production to 55,000 oz. or more in 1927. In 1924 important discoveries of platinum were made in South Africa. Prior to these discoveries practically all platinum was recovered from alluvial deposits, and the South African opera-tions are first to work an ore profitably for the pri-mary recovery of platinum. A number of companies were formed to develop these deposits, but only a few made any real progress. Total production for 1926 was about 5000 oz. The United States production is unimportant; that in Canada has increased to around 9000 oz., principally as a by-product in nickel-copper ores.

GENTLEMEN Submitted herewith are the report of the Treasurer for the year 1938 and reports for the same year of the following standing committees: Admissions, Membership, Papers and Publications, Mining and Metal¬lurgy (Magazine), Library, Speakers for Local Sections and Student Societies, and Student Relations. To these reports members are referred for further details. Membership.-The end of the year 1938 saw Institute membership at an all-time peak: 12,474, made up of 2898 Student Associates and 9576 members of other classifications. The next highest level had been reached at the end of 1921 when corresponding figures were: total, 10,329; student members, 1450; all other classifications, 8879. The net gain for the year was 1495, of which 751 were Student Associates and 744 in the other categories. Two factors contribute to the growth of membership: (1) the enrolment of new members; and (2) the retention of members already on the roll as reflected in a relatively small number of resignations and suspensions for nonpayment of dues. For the first, much credit goes properly to the general Membership Committee that functioned for a second year under the chairmanship of Clyde E. Williams. With the cooperation of Institute members in general, to whom Mr. Williams expresses appreciation in his report, the Committee has been successful in acquainting eligible nonmembers with the purposes, activities and advantages of the Institute. The result has been the receipt during the year of 1162 applications, exclusive of Student Associates. This compares with 1212 during 1937 and 1266 during 1936. However, in considering this modest decline, account must be taken of the somewhat less prosperous conditions prevailing in the mineral industries and, consequently, among engineers engaged ?in those industries.

(written discussion ?).-This paper is a real contribution to technical science; it will make it' easier to think accurately about the inner workings of a blast furnace. I was rather surprised to read that the authors regarded as a new discovery the idea that a molten mixture of CaO, A1203, and Si02 is a molten solution of the compounds of these oxides rather than of the oxides in each other. Surely no. chemist with an active respect for the known facts of chemical affinity could believe that these oxides could be melted together without forming compounds, and that these compounds would then dissolve in one another. This work does, however, help to establish what it was supposed must be true. I think it is worth while, in the light of the work of the Geophysics Laboratory, this work of the Bureau of Mines, and that of previous investigators, to visualize what happens as a charge passes down through a blast furnace, thinking especially of the slag-forming materials. These are chiefly kaolin (Al203.2SiO2.2H2O), quartz, and limestone. These substances do not undergo much change until the limestone decomposes at about the middle of the furnace, whereupon the chemical affinities of CaO and SiO2 must begin to he active; especially if there is any amorphous Si02 present. This forms CaSiO3, and the SiO2, CaSi02 and Al2-032SiO2 then come together to form the binary and ternary eutectics so well located by the work of the Geophysics Laboratory. No matter how much lime has been charged into the furnace, the formation of this eutectic will start it about the same height in the furnace and the gangue will start to get pasty at the same height. DITHIOPHOSPHATES and xanthates are the principal collectors for sulphide minerals, and consequently any knowledge of mineral-collector systems of this type is of value. In the present investigation an attempt was made to obtain information on the interaction of a typical dithiophosphate with galena. In carrying out this study, radioiso-topes, so much discussed in the past few years,', ' were extensively employed. By using radioactive dithiophosphate synthesized from radioactive phosphorus, a rapid and sensitive analytical procedure G. L. This permitted determination of such important quantities as the rate of uptake of dithiophosphate by the mineral, the amount existing at equilibrium on the mineral surface and in the solution, and the desorption of the agent from the surface. Such measurements were possible even on single crystals of galena. In addition the exchange of dithiophosphate between the solution and the sorbed phase was examined, a matter which could be accomplished only by the use of isotopes. It is desired to point out at this time that throughout this paper the term "sorption" has been employed to designate the uptake of agent by mineral, without implication as to the nature of the process by which the uptake was accomplished. Experimental Materials: Galena: The galena was from the Tri-State district. For studies on ground mineral four preparations were used during the course of the investigation. These were prepared from selected large crystals by wet grinding in order to reduce surface oxidation. Alcohol was chosen as a convenient medium for this purpose. The ground mineral was then fractionated by sedimentation in alcohol, dried by evacuation, and stored in a nitrogen-filled desiccator. Data on the preparations are tabulated in table I. The size analysis indicated that the areas of the preparations were of comparable magnitude, even though the absolute values may be somewhat incorrect. DITHIOPHOSPHATES and xanthates are the principal collectors for sulphide minerals, and consequently any knowledge of mineral-collector systems of this type is of value. In the present investigation an attempt was made to obtain information on the interaction of a typical dithiophosphate with galena. In carrying out this study, radioiso-topes, so much discussed in the past few years,', ' were extensively employed. This permitted determination of such important quantities as the rate of uptake of dithiophosphate by the mineral, the amount existing at equilibrium on the mineral surface and in the solution, and the desorption of the agent from the surface. Such measurements were possible even on single crystals of galena. In addition the exchange of dithiophosphate between the solution and the sorbed phase was examined, a matter which could be accomplished only by the use of isotopes. It is desired to point out at this time that throughout this paper the term "sorption" has been employed to designate the uptake of agent by mineral, without implication as to the nature of the process by which the uptake was accomplished. Experimental Materials: Galena: The galena was from the Tri-State district. For studies on ground mineral four preparations were used during the course of the investigation. These were prepared from selected large crystals by wet grinding in order to reduce surface oxidation. Alcohol was chosen as a convenient medium for this purpose. The ground mineral was then fractionated by sedimentation in alcohol, dried by evacuation, and stored in a nitrogen-filled desiccator. Data on the preparations are tabulated in table I. The size analysis indicated that the areas of the preparations were of comparable magnitude, even though the absolute values may be somewhat incorrect. ELECTROLYTIC, production of cadmium at the Great Falls plant started in the first part of the year 1925. Prior to that time, an experi¬mental unit had been in operation for a few months during the year . 1922. At present the plant is the largest producer of cadmium, not only in the United States but in the world. Electrolytic cadmium is characterized by its very low content of impurities. The main impurities, which are lead, copper, zinc, and iron, do not aggregate more than 0.05 per cent., leaving a cadmium content better than 99.95 per cent. The consumption of cadmium has increased rapidly since the war, with the growing use in the plating industry. Cadmium plating has come into prominence because of its connection with the automobile and radio industries. As a protective coating, a deposit of, cadmium is superior to zinc. Cadmium is also used extensively in alloys. Important among these is the alloy with copper used in telephone and trolley wire. In proportion of 0.5 to 1.2 per cent., cadmium adds materially to the strength and wearing qualities. Practically all commercial zinc concentrates contain a small amount of cadmium. In the electrolytic zinc process, the cadmium that is dissolved in the regular leaching operation is removed from solution with metallic zinc, generally added in the form of zinc dust. This precipitate also contains the copper taken into solution and the excess of zinc dust, which is required in order to insure a complete removal of all impurities. The precipitate is treated by a separate process to recover the copper, cadmium and excess zinc. In order to make the metals more soluble and to render insoluble such impurities as iron, arsenic and antimony, the precipitate is roasted. The roasting is carried out in gas-fired McDougall furnaces, with a roasting temperature of about 700° C.

• A new curriculum for combined liberal arts-engineering education has been announced by 6 middle western colleges. The plan involves three years of ;study at one of the 5 liberal arts colleges and two years and a summer of 'engineering work at Case; graduates receive both the A.B. and B.S. degrees. * A new kind of mining is being pioneered by a pest Virginia coal operator which enables four men to produce 800 tons of coal a day. The machine that makes this possible is a giant auger, 5 ft in diam and 100 ft long. Together with the carriage in which it is moved about, it weighs 60 tons. A mobile, but separate power plant of 1000 hp drives it. ' * The Sorel smelter, which will reduce Allard Lake titanium ores, will utilize five 6-electrode rectangular electric furnaces. Furnace hearth size will be about 18x50 ft, and the furnace will smelt about 300 tons of ore per day, producing 100 tons of iron and 130 tons of 70 pct Ti02 slag. The furnaces will be fed continuously by gravity from charge bins, and tap at intervals of 4 hr or more. Slag will be transferred to a high speed casting machine, using cast iron molds, then crushed for shipment to pigment producers. The iron will be treated to reduce its sulphur content to 0.03 to 0.05 pct, and then cast into small pigs or ingots for shipment to steel mills. • Flying of North Africa's first airborne mangetometer survey was completed this month, covering approximately 20,000 sq km in north central Tunisia for Gulf Exploration Co.'s program there. Mapping was completed in less than 30 days. •Yore than 9000 employees of 11 electric companies are enrolled in a 6-hr program that successfully informs workers on the principles of the American economic system. The course is given by the Middle West Service Co. which claims that before and after employee opinion polls show that the course instilled a better understanding of free enterprise and consequently a favorable response to it. •According to a report issued by the American Geological Institute there will be 2865 graduates in geology, including advanced degrees from U.S. colleges in 1950. This supply of geologists compares with requirements for 1278 at the professional and subprofessional levels. The report contains a detailed statistical study of the supply and demand situation for geologists in the 1949-50 period. •The dark cloud of over-production in the bituminous coal industry has a silver lining, according to Natural Resources Notes. Closing marginal mines, mostly strip and truck mines, will result in lower average costs and higher quality of the coal still produced. The producers that will then constitute the industry will be properly equipped and adequately financed to carry forward an intensive campaign to holdd and increase the markets for bituminous coal. •A light, compact, highly reliable blasting machine which does not rely for its effectiveness on the operator's skill is being tested by the Army Engineers. Operating under all climatic conditions from -65 to 125F, the 50-cap machine consists of a springwound do generator and is waterproof.

Frank L. Bader has been appointed to the sales staff of Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. in the Philadelphia territory. H. C. Burrell, former coordinator of raw materials, Pittsburgh, Penna., has been made manager of raw materials for Columbia-Geneva Div. of U. S. Steel Co., San Francisco. J. H. Cazier has resigned as general superintendent of Bagdad Copper Corp., Bagdad, Ariz., to devote full time with E. A. Scholz to the operation of the Copper King, Phillips and Black Pearl Mines near Bagdad. They have operated the Copper King zinc mine for more than two years.. Production started from the Black Pearl and Phillips tungsten mines during the past year. Robert T. Chapman has resigned from Reynolds Mining Corp. to join Westmoreland Manganese Corp. as general superintendent. Annan Cook, with Kennecott Copper Corp.'s exploration dept. for the past three years, has been appointed district geologist for the eastern states.

Safety and health are no longer secondary responsibilities but must be of paramount concern to every mining operation, according to Anthony J. Thompson, an attorney with Hamel, Park, McCabe & Saunders of Washington D.C. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) forecasts an estimated 19,000 inspections during 1979, and the economic and psychological impact of these inspections may he significant. To illustrate his point Thompson reviewed the experiences of a relatively large operation during a recent MSHA visit. The inspector was on the premises for two months, issuing between 250 to 300 "significant and substantial" (s&s) citations. During the most intensive period, about one month in duration, the operation experienced a production loss estimated between 2500 to 3000 tons; an accident rate up 30% over the previous month and 20% over the same month in the preceding year; 100% of the safety director's and safety engi¬neer's time was devoted to the inspection; 50% of top level management's time; and 90% of the mid-level or front line supervisory's time.

The fundamental equations that are used to describe two-phase fluid flow in porous media are Darcy's law for each phase and an equation of continuity for each component. The special case of one-dimensional, incompressible, two-phase flow has received much attention in the petroleum engineering literature.1-10 The basic paper on the subject is that of Buckley and Leverett.2 Buckley and Leverett showed that one could eliminate the pressure and obtain a single partial differential equation for the saturation. They solved this equation for the case when gravity and capillary forces are negligible. A frequently encountered property of the solution of the basic partial differential equation is that, as time progresses, the saturation becomes a multiple-valued function of the distance coordinate, x. Buckley and Leverett interpreted the formation of multiple values as an indication that the saturation-distance curve had be-come discontinuous. They developed a method of determining the position of the discontinuity from a material balance. We solve the Buckley-Leverett partial differential equation using the method of characteristics and the concept of shocks. Our treatment is analogous to treatments used in the theory of supersonic compressible flow." Although the numerical results obtained are the same as those obtained by previous methods, we believe that this approach is more logical and has broader applicability. It can, for example, be generalized to treat the case when the fluids are compressible. It is not clear how one would go about doing this using the method of Buckley and Leverett. To illustrate the power of the method of characteristics with shocks, we solve a problem in gravity segregation which has not been treated previously in the literature. A special case of the general method developed here was used by Welge, to solve a particular fluid displacement problem. We consider two-phase incompressible flow along the vertical direction x in a porous medium. We assume that there is no flow transverse to .x. We measure positive in the upward direction. The fundamental equations are obtained from Darcy's law and the mass conservation law. Since the two phases are incompressible, mass conservation is equivalent to volume conservation.

One of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production since its commercial developmerit in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experimenting on the extraction of zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained . British Patent No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode material in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electro-deposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electro-deposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as are the copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality. Reasons advanced for the ease with which deposits may be stripped from the aluminum surface are: (1) presence of a permanent oxide coating on the metal, (2) failure of aluminum to alloy with the deposit, (3) differences in coefficient of expansion, (4) high position of aluminum in the electromotive series of metals. Of these reasons for nonadherence, which may have some application in general deposition, probably the oxide coating has the greatest bearing on the subject of zinc deposition.
