In 1877 the Pennsylvania Railroad Company removed an old bridge from its line at Duncannon, Pa., built intermediate piers and erected shorter spans of the Pratt truss type, which had previously been in use on another portion of the road. The design of this truss would not admit of diagonals larger than 19 inches diameter, and in order to stiffen the bridge somewhat steel rods were introduced for the main diagonals in the first and second panels, 19 inches and 18/8 inches diameter respectively. These rods were threaded without upsetting, and by the ordinary formulae the strains were of the same intensity upon both, viz., 16,000 pounds per square inch with the maximum loading. The other main diagonals in the truss are 19 inches diameter, and of iron. It was specified for the steel rods: Elastic limit,.......46,000 Ibs. Tensile strength,. .. ,. .. 80,000 lbs. Elongation,,.,.,. 20 per cent. The steel was procured without difficulty, and it allowed a factor of safety of 23/4 at elastic limit, while a similar factor of 2½ had for a long time been successfully used for iron. In the course of three years, from time to time, six of these steel rods broke, three of them being 18 inches in diameter, and three 19 inches in diameter. The broken rods were tested, and three of them analyzed at Altoona to ascertain the cause of failure, and what modifications should be made in the steel for such service. Examination showed that all the rods were broken in detail close under the nut. The threads were well cut and properly rounded at the root. testing the rods micrometer screws, reading to .0001" with c bell to signal the contact, were attached to the test pieces, and by this means the modulus of elasticity and elastic limit accurately obtained.

BY surface treatment of coal is meant the application of a material, either solid or liquid, to the surface of pieces of coal. The purposes of surface treatment are varied. They may be to identify or "trade-mark" the coal, to modify the burning characteristics, the coking tendencies, or the behavior of the ash, to prevent the freezing of wet coal, or to control the dust. The control of dust is the usual purpose of surface treatment. TRADE-MARKING COAL The application of color to the surface of coal for the purpose of identification and registration of the trade-mark has been practiced to some extent. In 1928, the Glen Alden Coal Co. began to color its coal and adopted the trade-mark, "Blue Coal." The Old Ben Coal Co. later followed a similar practice with "Green Coal." A commoner means of identification of coal has been the stenciling of designs or pasting labels on large lumps or in the distribution of small cardboard tags through the smaller sizes. The details of the method used to color coal have not been revealed. Usually all of the coal is not treated, because of the expense. Only enough pieces are colored to show clearly when distributed through the coal. The patent literature gives information on some of the methods proposed. Esselen and Weiss 1 have patented the deposition of a coloring material in the valleys of the surface of the coal. Sperr2 covers the quenching of coke with water containing a pigment or dye that will deposit on the coke. He also suggests electroplating with copper or nickel. Glinsmann 3 subjects the freshly fractured coal surface to the action of an alkali or alkali earth ferricyanide and a ferric salt. Barsky and Hanson4 specify a method for the application of the same chemicals covered by Glinsmann.

ALUMINUM forms not only binary compounds with most of the metallic elements but also forms many ternary or more complex constituents. Several of those occurring in the more important alloy systems have been identified under the microscope and the action of various etching reagents has, been carefully studied.' The determination of the structure and composition of these complex constituents is a matter of some difficulty and little information is available. X-ray crystal analysis offers a promising method for the study of such constituents. First, and of considerable importance, is the possibility of recognizing the presence of a given constituent by means more positive than microscopic observation. Evidence can also be obtained concerning the nature and composition of the constituent in question and ultimately it should be possible, at least in some cases, to describe the structure including the relative locations of the various atoms. In this paper some results of an uncompleted study of the constituents of the aluminum-iron-silicon system are given and the methods employed are described. Inasmuch as iron and silicon are the chief impurities in aluminum, the constitutional relations of this system are of fundamental importance in the metallurgy of pure aluminum and its alloys; the system has been studied by several investigators and the more important contributions have been reviewed recently.2 Fig. 1 shows the structure of the aluminum-rich alloys after prolonged annealing at 560° C., in accord with one of the most recent investigations.3 The ternary alloys examined in the course of the present investigation were all annealed at 550° or 560° C.; in fact, some of the specimens were the identical ones used by Dix and Heath, who kindly supplied them for this work. IT is rather the general belief that acidified solutions of ferrous salts are readily oxidized when in contact with air, and often elaborate pre-cautions are taken to prevent it. This, however, is not the case and several statements may be found in the literature expressing surprise at the extreme slowness with which oxidation takes place when air or oxygen is bubbled through such a solution. Thus C. Baskerville and R. Stevenson1 "observed with surprise" that no. oxidation apparently took place, as shown by titration with 0.5 N KMnO4, when a stream of air was passed for 3 hr. through an acidified solution of ferrous ammonium sulfate or ferrous sulfate. The same authors state that even the presence of salts such as cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, etc., which usually act as oxygen carriers, had "no effect upon the oxidation as was observed by, passing air for 3 hr. through solutions of Mohr's salt acidified with sulfuric acid." While this statement will be proved further on to be at least partly incorrect the slowness of the oxidation of ferrous salts alone has been previously established by McBain.2. His investigation also showed that the rate of oxidation increases markedly with an increase in the concentration of ferrous sulfate as well as that of oxygen; the concentration of free acid had a comparatively small influence, which in the case of sulfuric acid was to retard slightly the rate of reaction. More recently R. Thomas and E. T. Williams3 investigated the catalytic effect of nitric oxide on the oxidation of ferrous salts, which had been earlier patented by McCulloch.4 They found that the probable mechanism of the catalytic action was the oscillation of the catalyst between two stages of oxidation and its interaction alternately with the oxygen and the ferrous iron.

For several years work has been carried on by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo., to develop improved methods of concentrating the oxidized ores of lead and zinc. Various samples have been investigated, and results on some have been published. For several years, the Bureau of Standards has been working in cooperation with an Advisory Committee on non-ferrous metals on various phases of the production and testing of zinc bronzes. The work has dealt especially with the type of metal known as "Admiralty bronze" in England and as "Government bronze" in this country and consisting of 88 copper, 10 tin, and 2 zinc. Several reports have been made on this subject and these should be considered in connection with this paper.' First Series of Five Foundry Tests A very brief summary of the first series of five foundry tests has been made12 but for the sake of clearness the results are given here in different form. The five foundries cooperating in this investigation were: Ohio Brass Co., Mansfield, Ohio; Titanium Alloy Mfg. Co., Niagara Falls, N. Y.; Packard Motor Car Co., Detroit, Mich.; National Cash Register Co., Dayton, Ohio; Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C. The object of the work was to determine whether uniform results could be obtained with this alloy in different foundries working under definite instructions. One of the participating foundries prepared, from virgin metal, a stock of ingots of the composition 88 copper, 10 tin, 2 zinc, and at the same time poured nine test bars from this melt of virgin metal. The results of the physical tests of these bars are shown in Table 1. Examination of this table shows that the highest and most nearly uniform results were obtained when the virgin metal was cast flat in chill molds and the lowest and- most variable results were encountered when it was cast, vertical in green-sand molds. In this, as in all other tables, the mean deviation was obtained by the usual method of taking the average of the differences of the individual values from the average values.

This paper describes the results of volumetric efficiency tests on oil well pumps handling gas oil mixtures. The work was performed in a large scale, above ground unit wherein test conditions could be accurately controlled and measured. The main variables studied were gas/oil ratio (including gas from solution and free gas mixed with oil), pump compression ratio, pump stroke length, pump speed, and clearance volume between the valves at their closest approach. Results are presented for two different pumps and for oils of two viscosities. Relatively small amounts of gas entering the pump resulted in large decreases in volumetric efficiency. Under conditions where the pump was operating at reduced efficiency because of the presence of gas, it was found that variation in the clearance volume between the standing and traveling valves had a considerable effect on pump efficiency level. This effect of the valve clearance volume was found to be significantly altered by the viscosity of the oil used in the tests. The effects on pump efficiency of the other variables studied were found to be relatively small over the range of conditions utilized. INTRODUCTION The production of oil by pumping is often hampered by low volumetric efficiency. A direct increase in lifting costs results from low volumetric efficiency. An indirect increase in lifting costs, probably greater than the direct increase, results from additional wear and tear on pumping equipment and from the down-time necessary for the repairs which can be traced to low-efficiency operation. Both increases in lifting costs tend to reduce economically recoverable oil. A number of different factors can contribute to low pump efficiency. A known basic cause of low efficiency is the presence of free gas in the pumped fluid. Pump volumetric efficiency is calculated only on the basis of liquid pumped and because any free gas pumped is discounted, this volume of free gas would represent a loss of pump efficiency. However, gas also causes a reduction in pump efficiency because it is a highly compressible fluid. It is known that pumps some- times "gas lock" because of excessive gas-to-liquid ratios in the pump barrel. Little is known of the role of gas compressibility in the intermediate case where the pump is operating at low efficiency. The opinion exists, however, that oil-well pumps tend to operate at higher efficiency with long stroke lengths at low speeds, but no quantitative studies of these pumping variables have been reported. It was believed that a much better understanding of the variables which control pump volumetric efficiency could be obtained and that possibly some suggestions as to the methods for increasing efficiency might be found from a study of the operation of pumps handling gas under closely controlled conditions. Previous investigators have studied the effects on pump efficiency of such factors as oil viscosity, oil temperature, slippage of oil. past pump plungers, pump submergence, valve size and spacing, pressure above pump plunger and fluid vapor pressure. However, none of these published investigations were conducted with pumps being subjected to large amounts of gas such as might be the case in a pumping well, nor did any of the investigations study the effect of variation in stroke length or pump speed. A large-scale teat unit was therefore constructed for studying the operation of pumps handling gas and for evaluating effects of such variables as pump stroke length and pump speed. PROCEDURE AND EQUIPMENT A schematic diagram of the pump testing equipment is given in Fig. 1. A 45-ft length of 6-in. casing is mounted vertically in a 65-ft tower. Sight ports are mounted in the casing at intervals near the location of the pump intake and the liquid level in the casing. These sight ports are fitted with Lucite windows sealed by neoprene "0" rings. The Lucite windows are machined to conform to the I.D. of the casing so that no obstruction to flow is present along the casing wall. The casing is fitted with a tubing head and 2-in. tubing is hung inside the casing. Pumps are seated in a shoe attached to the 2-in. tubing. A 1-in. polish rod is attacked directly to the pump without any intervening sucker rods. The top of the polish rod is attached to the weight carrier, which contains a number of weights to be used to force the polish rod in against tubing pressure on the down-stroke. The design of a tailings dam is a geotechnical engineering project of considerable scope. For the design, it is necessary to establish the engineering properties of the soil or rock strata which will support the dam and the tailings or other fill which will be used to construct the dam. The various field and laboratory investigations which are necessary to obtain the required design parameters are discussed in the paper and the use of these parameters to compute stability, settlement, and seepage are considered. The designer of a tailings dam can never assume an absolute knowledge of the properties of the foundation strata. Further, initial design assumptions are often approximate, particularly with regard to the distribution of pore pressures through and beneath the dam. Thus, the installation of performance monitoring instruments is recommended, since data obtained from such instrumentation can be used to check the stability of the structure both during construction and after its completion.

MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Processes in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carborization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, fictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1, 2 Taggart, 3 and Peele. 4 Shape In general, coal differs in shape from its accompanying dirt throughout the range of commercial sizes. Coal, breaking into roughly, cubical particles, contains a greater number of axes that are approximately the same length than does the dirt. The latter, consisting of pieces of slate and shale and lenses of pyrite, is flatter in nature. Further, flat coal often has a dirty, slaty appearance, even though of high quality. Mechanical pickers known as flat pickers, or "flatters," are widely used in the Pennsylvania anthracite region to remove flat coal from the final clean coal. This practice greatly improves the appearance of the final market product.

IN diamond coring salt beds to evaluate deposits, special techniques are applied to standard slim hole drilling to obtain a representative sample of the water soluble sodium chloride. Industrial consumers generally require a run-of-the-mine material of 98.0 pct sodium chloride. Since no commercial beneficiation has yet been devised to upgrade the lower quality salt beds, the only processing is crushing and screening to the size required by the customer. Coring salt sections has recently become important not only in dry mining, but also in the development of brine cavities by hydraulic fracturing and the formation of jugs for storing liquid petroleum products. Drilling Fluid: The fluid used in coring salt beds in New York, Ohio, and Michigan is a thoroughly saturated brine made from 3.0 lb rock salt per gal of make-up water. This mined rock salt, -4 mesh +10 mesh, is dissolved in a lixator, a double-bottomed cone hopper that turns fresh water to fully saturated brine.

Accurate ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fineness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by misuse, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to be actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

The tests herein described are part of an extended series of expel<ments, performed by the authors together with J. F. McClelland and L. W. Bahney, on the reclamation of metallics from foundry and manufacturing-plant scrap. The most obstinate problem encountered was the proper cleaning of the metal. Introduction In the manufacture of brass and brass products the weight of the finished product leaving the plant is much less than the total weight of. copper and zinc entering. A small part of this discrepancy is due to the unavoidable oxidation of the metals in melting, but by far the largest part of the loss is in the form of metallic particles of copper,. zinc, and brass. These losses occur principally at three points in the process: (a) in the casting-shop ashes; (b) in the slags from furnaces melting scrap brass; (c) in material spilled on the floor throughout the manufacturing process. The amount of these products in some plants is nearly 100 tons per 24 hours. Casting-shop ashes contain the metal spilled from the crucibles during melting and pouring, and the metal included in the slags formed in the melting process. The ashes also contain pieces of broken crucibles with adhering metal; 20 to 30 per cent. of unburned coal is also present. The metal in casting-shop ashes contains clean pieces of zinc or copper ingots weighing 1 to 2 lb., jagged pieces of metal of all shapes ranging in size from several inches down to the finest dust, and shot and botryoidal shapes ranging in size from 2 or 3 in. down to 0.01 mm. or less in diameter. Slags from furnaces melting scrap brass contain metal in the form of small shot. Floor sweepings occur in all shapes: spirals, thin shavings, pins and pin-like pieces, wire, rods, and buffing-wheel dust are the commonest.

IT has been observed that deformation in iron takes place by slip on {110} + {112} + {123} planes1,2 but in silicon ferrite with low deforma-tion temperatures or high silicon contents (exceeding 4 per cent) the authors have found that slip is confined wholly to {110} planes, at least with small amounts of deformation. The purpose of the present inves-tigation was to determine the effect of this alteration of slip mechanism on preferred orientations in cold-rolled and recrystallized strips. Inci-dental observations on the effect of the recrystallization temperature were also made. The numerous determinations of the texture of cold-rolled iron and steel have been in satisfactory agreement as to the principal features of the texture. (with the exception of a few conclusions that apparently have been based on insufficient data). The texture is chiefly one in which [110] directions of the grains lie along tile direction of rolling, with a deviation of a few degrees, and in which the (100) planes lie in the plane of the rolled sheet, with a deviation from this position chiefly about the rolling direc-tion as all axis 3-9. This deviation about the rolling direction as an axis has been measured by different observers and lies between about 45° and 50° or 60° for iron5,6,9 and is usually in the neighborhood of 50° for mild steel6,7,8. The range of this deviation is a function of the percentage of total reduction 8, 10. Post&apos; reported that it decreases with increasing percentage reduction, but apparently he .studied only the surface material, which Gensamer and Mehl7 found to be somewhat differently oriented from the material in the inside of the sheet. McLachlan and Davey10 found that the deviation also decreases with increasing percentage of total reduction for the material in the interior of the sheet and is independent of the percentage of reduction per pass.

Graton and Dr. Joseph Murdoch1 presented to the American Institute of Mining Engineers a notable contribution to economic geology under the title The Sulphide Ores of Copper. The value of the work was recognized by mine operators, and Mr. Graton was assisted in his plan to extend his investigations,. by the organization of a commission to undertake a "secondary enrichment investigation." This paper gives a brief summary of theory on radiation waves and describes experiments by the United States Bureau of Mines and by the Canadian Geological Survey at the Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. Dr. D. A. Keys, Dr. F. W. Lee and the writer did the experimental work, and Dr. L. V. King some of the theoretical work. In prospecting for orebodies underground it is a usual practice to employ a loop of wire carrying an alternating current that induces an electromotive force in good conductors beneath the earth. The conduc-tars are usually of such low resistance and impedance that currents of considerable magnitude may result in these orebodies or conductors, and these currents in turn induce an electromotive force in a detecting coil placed near the surface of the ground. By using amplifiers it is possible so to enhance the effect of this electromotive force in the detecting coil that the currents in the underground conductors are detected in spite of the powerful effects coming directly to the coil from the primary loop. In such cases distance or depth has primary importance, for the effects have to pass down to the orebody and the secondary effects induced therein have again to pass back through the ground to the observer&apos;s detection coil on the surface. However, there is another factor to consider—absorption of the electromagnetic disturbances by the intervening soils and rocks. This absorption will vary with their composition. Thus the main factors that determine the possibility of detecting ore underground are: 1. Its depth beneath the surface, 2. The magnitude of the conducting orebody, 3. The excellence of the conductivity of the orebody as compared with that of the surrounding strata, 4. The frequency of the alternating current,

THE observations here presented are those, not of an expert accountant, but of one who, while he has seen considerable service in the accounting departments of large companies, has spent more time in engineering and operating. This paper is intended to cover, in a measure, mine accounting for small mines, as distinguished from the elaborate systems, requiring many persons ;n the accounting department. I shall attempt to outline a system embracing the essentials of accounting, and simple enough in form to permit one or two persons to carry it on from month to month, in sufficient detail to be able to tell quickly the grade of ore, the prices received for metals, costs per ton for mining and milling, costs per foot for development, upward or downward tendencies in costs, ore settled or in transit, cash on hand, stocks of supplies on hand, efficiency of&apos; labor, etc. As in all accounting, there are two main divisions: that of revenue received for what is sold, and that of disbursements made for what is bought, so in mine accounting we have to consider chiefly the income derived from sales of ore or concentrates, and the expenses incurred in producing the said ore or concentrates in a marketable condition.

Continuous mining has revolutionized the coal industry but intensified the problems of earlier mechanization. From the installation of the first miner, it was recognized that face ventilation would be one of these problems. To establish an efficient work cycle for the equipment being used, conventional mechanized mining provides four or more development faces. Continuous mining, relying on a single machine, requires only one face, although more than one can be driven alternately by the same machine. In gaseous areas mined by the older methods, the intermittent rate of exposure allows time for the face to bleed off or be cleared, and the width obtained with conventional units makes it possible to hang a brattice line almost to the face. Continuous mining increases the ventilation hazards; there is no margin of time, and very limited space.

A method, based on radial distribution analysis, was developed for determining the effect of size to which a given ore is broken on the potential recovery in beneficiations targeted to selected concentrate grades. A measuring microscope and computer analysis are used to obtain the radial distribution of the valuable component in polished sections of ore.
