Since January 1959 a zinc refiner of novel design has been in operation at Blackwell, Okla., producing 99.995+ zinc from the output of the Blackwell horizontal retort smelter. The refiner is a continuously operated, pyro-metallurgical unit with principal dimensions horizonhl permitting one floor operation. It is very ruggedly constructed. Furthermore it is not subjected to deterioration from high concentrations of iron in the feed metal because the boiling units are separate from the rectification columns and constructed with silicon carbide brick arches through which the heat is transferred radiantly to the zinc. A zinc refiner of novel design has been in operation since January 1959 at the Blackwell, Okla. plant of the Blackwell Zinc Co., Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of American Metal Climax, Inc. Developed by the company's technical and operating staffs, the new refiner produces special high-grade zinc (nominally 99.995+ pct Zn) from the prime western1 slab output of the Blackwell horizontal retort smelter. The refiner is a continuously operated, pyromet-allurgical, high-capacity unit employing fractional distillation to separate zinc from its impurities, consisting principally of lead, cadmium, and iron. In prime western slab, these elements may vary in concentration from 0.005 to 1.6 pct. Table I shows the impurities usually encountered in the Blackwell prime western metal fed to the refiner together with their boiling points and vapor pressures at 907oC. The commercial pyrometallurgical smelting processes for extracting zinc from ore include distillation from retorts and a limited degree of refining can be accomplished by redistillation in similar retorts. To achieve special high-grade purity, an impractical number of batch redistillations would be required, however, with an accompanying loss of much metal. A continuously operated and integrated unit is required in which fractional vaporization and condensation can take place in a large number of stages. The first commercial continuously operated unit was developed by the New Jersey Zinc Co.4 In the separation of any two substances the degree of separation is limited if a mixture exists having a constant boiling point. The Zn-cd5 and Zn-pb6 systems contain no constant boiling points and hence these metals may be separated to any degree of purity. Basically, the pyrometallurgical refining of zinc involves three steps: a) iron, copper, and other metals having no appreciable vapor pressures at 907ºC concentrate in the bath when the impure zinc is boiled, b) lead, bismuth, antimony, and other metals having boiling points above but closer to that of zinc are selectively condensed from the vapor boiled from the bath, and c) cadmium and other metals having lower boiling points than zinc are fractionally distilled by reboiling and subsequent condensation of the zinc from the vapor. The boiling and condensation of zinc must be conducted in vessels constructed of materials which are refractory at the temperature involved (907 ºC) and it is highly desirable that they also be resistant to attack by the various metals. This requirement dictates construction from relatively small, simply shaped pieces which limits the pressures which may be employed to avoid leakage through the numerous joints. Stresses induced must be limited essentially to compressive ones and suitable provision must be made to permit thermal expansion of the components in order to minimize these stresses. Where heat is to be added for boiling or removed for condensation, refractory material through which the heat flows must have a high thermal conductivity. Silicon carbide is highly conductive but is subject to attack by iron and is expensive compared to other commonly employed refractories. A hard, dense aluminous fireclay is well suited to contain these metals where high thermal conductivity is not required. Zinc will penetrate the pores of fireclay brick but only to a limited depth in an exterior wall and has little effect other than an increase in weight and conductivity. The design objectives of the Amax refiner were: a) to achieve a long life by heavy, rugged construction and by employing silicon carbide refractories only where required for heat conductivity and not in contact with liquids of high iron concentrations, b) to simplify operation, manning and control by essentially horizontal construction, and c) to obtain high capacity in a single unit. Fuel problems of two lesser developed countries (LDC 's) are presented. In particular, the paper reviews cement technology and the fuel-intensive cement industries of the Philippines and South Korea. Based on current financial and cost data, analyses are presented of the proposed substitution of high-sulfur and slow-sulfur American coal in place of fuel oil. The analyses show that economic substitution of coal for oil is not only based on relative prices for coal and oil, as expected, but also to be an inverse function of degree of intensity of energy use, and a direct function of financial incentives such as accelerated depreciation, taxes on the savings made by the use of coal, and cost of capital.

In the years following World War II, L. de Roll S.A., Zurich, Switzerland, perfected its vertical kiln. De Roll first became interested in cement-manufacturing equipment in 1947, not only kilns but also the crushing, grinding, and handling equipment required for a complete cement plant. The parent company, Louis de Roll Iron Works, S.A., Gerlafingen, Switzerland, was founded in 1804. In its six plants, and with its associated companies, de Roll manufactures and installs equipment for a wide variety of industries-chemical and metallurgical operations, fats and oils plants, and municipal refuse incinerators and sewage disposal installations. Vertical shaft kilns, of course, are as old as Portland cement itself. Their fuel economy has long been recognized, particularly in Europe where fuel costs are high. But the disadvantages of old-type shaft kilns have been the lack of consistent quality of the clinker, the small capacity, and the relatively high labor costs.

Officials of the State Department have expressed their hope that a considerable number of technical men will take the examination for consular service. The Department recognizes that the interest of the United States will be served best if technical men are made available through these examinations for vacancies at points where their training will be of special value. Industrial engineers who have passed the con-sular examination will be assigned to industrial centers of Europe or South America. Mining engineers, chemists, electrical engineers, etc., will be assigned to industrial centers requiring special training.

Longwall working in Britain developed to overcome problems arising from depth of seams causing roof and ventilation difficulties. This system became very widespread particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. In the thinner sections, in order to remain competitive, the longwall undercutting machine was developed. Following the development of the coal cutter, every other aspect of the face operation was examined and mechanized as it became a bottleneck to output and efficiency. The face system itself was modified and workings concentrated with the same objectives.

With drilling costs playing a pivotal role in the economics of most mineral exploration programs, there has been a significant effort over the past decade to trim expenditures in this area. One result of these cost-cutting measures has been the substantial shift to use of rotary drills. By the mid-1970's, rotary drilling accounted for six times as much footage as core drilling in exploration work. Among the various rotary drilling techniques, the use of dual-tube drilling for continuous sampling is attracting growing interest. Factors such as drilling speed and cost advantages, coupled with favorable comparisons between chip samples and solid core samples, have helped to spark this interest.

WITH all the advantages of handling bulk materials by means of belt conveyor also go some problems, one of the most persistent being that of cleaning. When sticky materials are being carried; the build-up of material on the return idler rolls results in difficulty of belt training. Much attention has been given to the problem of cleaning conveyor belts, and a great variety of cleaning devices have been developed. Even the best involve troublesome maintenance, and none can completely remove the fine particles imbedded in the belt cover, which cause rapid wear of the return idler rolls, and at the same time, of the belt cover as well.

With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel framework buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements became more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as compared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter' listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft. Geology Perlite is one of the large family of rocks originating from a granitic or acidic magma and generally has a "rhyolitic composition with a marked perlitic structure."² The name "perlite" is a derivation from "perlstein" originally given "to certain glassy rocks (hyaloliparites, hyalo-rhyolites) with numerous concentric cracks, from the fancied resemblance of broken out fragments to pearls."3 The cause of the perlitic texture is somewhat controversial. Johannsen attributes the texture to strain set up in the glass by cooling and describes the finding of peculiar, glassy balls, called marekanite, more or less rounded and showing concave indentations, which may be left when perlite is broken. Frank Rutley, on the other hand, in 1881, while working on vitreous rocks from Montana, observed that there was incipient or partially started crystallization with segregation of water toward the un-crystallized portion in all specimens of perlite examined. Further he observed evidence of strain around focii of crystallization to which he ascribed the development of the spherical cracking which gives the rock its perlitic texture.4 Widespread over the western and southwestern United States where Tertiary vulcanism is exposed, perlite commonly is associated with andesitic, basaltic, and rhyolitic lavas with inter-bedded tuffs and ash of Eocene age although some deposits are associated with rocks assigned to the Pliocene age.5, 6 n nearly all cases the perlite overlies water laid tuff beds or agglomerates or breccias of explosive nature, an outstanding exception being the occurrence of perlite as the chilled selvage of andesite intrusions.7'8 Available chemical analyses of per-lites from the western and southwestern United States indicate that they are varieties of leucorhyolites rather than of normal rhyolites, leucorhyolites having less than 5 pct of dark minerals, normal rhyolites having more than 5 pct. A study was made of indexed penetrations by a single dull bit tooth under statically applied loads into rock subjected to confining pressures from atmospheric to 5,000 p.si and atmospheric pore pressure. Experimental results obtained with a 45" wedge tooth over the above range of pressures are presented for two limestones and a sandstone, a variely of indexing distances and two degrees of tooth dullness. The optimum distance between successive bit-tooth penetrations required for maximum rock damage and chip formation decreases substantially with increa.sing confining pressure above the brittle-to-ductile transition pressure of a particular rock. However, the distance remains approximately constant for a variation in confining pressure below the transition pressure. At a given confining pressure, the bit-tooth force required lor chip formation is constant for indexing distances greater than optimum, but generally decreases linearly with decreasing indexing distance for distances less than optimum. The chip-formation force data obtained at confining pressures for which the chip-generation mechanism is macroscopic-ally of a pseudoplastic nature compare favorably with previous theoretical results for indexed dull hit-tooth penetrntion into an idealized, rigid, perfectly plastic rock. INTRODUCTION To study the cutting action of a roller-cone bit, the interaction of a penetrating bit tooth with craters formed in a rock surfacc by the passage of previous bit teeth must be considered. Current knowledge of the basic mechanics of bit tooth-rock intcract:on under simulated borehole environmental conditions has been extensively reviewed.',' Particularly of current interest are the effects of bit-tooth shape, distance between successive penetrations and differential pressure at the rock surface on the extent of the interaction. Pertinent to this paper are results of an experimental investigationb f the interaction between successive penetrations by sharp, wedge-shaped bit teeth. It was demonstrated that both bit-tooth angle and differential pressure influence the extent of rock damage between successive bit-tooth penetrations. Specifically, the optimum or minimum distance between successive penetrations required for maximum interact'on or chip generation tends to decrease with decreasing bit-tooth angle and increasing differential pressure. In addition, at differential pressures on the order of 2,000 psi for four va- rieties of limestones and sandstones, the macroscopic mechanism of chip formation exhibits a transition from brittle to ductile. In this paper, experimental consideration is given to successive or indexed penetrat ons by wedge-shaped bit teeth. Since pore pressure in a rock sample is maintained at atmospheric pressure, the differential pressure at the fluid-rock interface is equal to the confining pressure. The degrees of bit-tooth dullness include teeth with flat and round apexes (Fig. 1). Of primary concern in this paper are the bit-tooth forces required for chip formation, the macroscopic mechanism of chip formation and the minimum distance between successive penetrations, i.e., optimum indexing distance required for maximum rock damage, as functions of differential pressure. Of further interest is a comparison of actual bit-tooth chip formation forces at elevated differential pressures with calculated forces from previous theoretical results4 for indexed dull bit tooth penetration into a rigid-plastic rock. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The experimental apparatus consists of a pressure vessel equipped with a piston through the side of the vessel (Fig. 2). A single bit tooth inserted in the lower end of the piston is forced at a desired rate into the rock when the ram pressure chamber is pressurized. Electrical instrumentation incorporated into the apparatus yields a graphical plot of force on the piston as a function of bit-tooth penetration or displacement into the rock. Since the piston and ram assembly are in force equilibrium for a constant confining pressure in the main vessel, the fluid volume in the vessel remains constant during bit-tooth penetration. One of the most important methods of increasing the hardness of metals is alloying. In spite of the widespread use of alloys, the fundamental mechanism of alloy hardening is little understood. This is true even of the simplest form of alloy, the primary substitutional solid solution in which solute atoms substitute for solvent atoms at random in the crystal lattice of the latter. A fundamental understanding of the mechanism of solid-solution hardening would be important, both because of the widespread use of alloys of this type and because of the light that might be thrown on the mechanism of hardening in more complicated alloys. The present investigation covers the hardness of primary substitutional solid solutions of zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic in copper. All of these are B subgroup elements from the third period of the periodic table. Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, and As are in groups I, 11, 111, IV, and V, respectively, and lie just to the right of the transition elements. Because of their cost, it is unlikely that Ga-Cu and Ge-Cu solutions will ever be of commercial importance, but the intent of this study has been to discover some of the fundamentals of solid-sdstion hardening and it has been demonstrated that such a study is far more likely to be fruitful if alloys are made up on the basis of position of the constituent elements in the periodic table than if commercially important alloys are used. Many investigations have been made of the hardness of substitutional solid solutions, but lack of attention to purity of the metals, infrequent grain-size control, and the use of varying testing techniques have virtually invalidated any comparisons. The purpose of most investigations has been to solve immediate problems and not to solve the primary problem: Why do solid solutions usually have a greater hardness than pure metals? Previous Work Theories have been advanced to account for the hardness of solid solutions, but relatively little experimental work has been done. Perhaps the first experimental work of merit was that of Norbury1 on copper alloys. He showed that for several alloys there was a correspondence between the hardness of one atomic per cent solutions and atomic volume of the solutions. More recently Brick, Martin, and Anger2 have investigated the effect of various solute elements on the hardness of copper. They concluded that the hardening effect of these solutes depended "primarily on the difference in atomic volume of solute and solvent or, relatedly, upon the parameter change of the solvent or the extent of solid solubility." They also observed the effect of these elements on hardness and texture developed by rolling and by annealing of rolled material. Austin3 examined the hardness and response to heat-treatment of various iron solid solutions. GRATIFYING progress continues towards the elimination of the hazards confronting health and safety in and about mines. Employers and employees are diligently co-operating. One of the outstanding movements towards this end is the National Safety Competition conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. William W. WHEN the War Production Board issued its order which will end the use of iron and steel in more than 400 familiar civilian articles, the list of those products formed a fascinating and homeric catalogue of the things we use. Articles for which iron and steel may not be used after a 90-day "tapering-off" period are as workaday as office machinery and as frivolous as cocktail shakers. Mostly they are smaller items-the smallest probably are phonograph needles but in the aggregate they will save tremendous quantities of the metal most needed to win the war. In total war there are no trifles. Interesting proof of this lies in the fact that by eliminating manufacture of blackhead squeezers we shall save 110,000 lb. of steel a year. Out of this steel we might have made four 155-mm. field pieces. We might have made a thousand 3-in. trench mortars, 4400 0.30-caliber machine guns, 55 16-in. shells, 110 200-lb. aerial bombs, or three 15-ton tanks with something left over to arm them.

Recently the U.S. Bureau of Mines completed organizational changes that, for the first time since the beginning of World War 11,. re-emphasize mining research as an important part of its responsibilities. A progress report follows on the Bureau's improved program for mining research. During World War II the Bureau's mining research lapsed in favor of short-range, more urgent activities. Since the end of the war mining has grad- ually returned to an economy where reduced costs and increased efficiency are essential to a vigorous industry, and demand for improvement through expanded research is again pre-eminent. In recognizing this situation, the Bureau is again emphasizing mining technology and has reinstituted some of its earlier mining research activities. Recent research, however, follows a more scientific approach in solving mining problems because new technology, particularly new instrumentation, has developed rapidly during the past decade.

The members of the Institute have probably seen in the daily papers notices of the plans of the Secretary of the Navy to. form an Advisory Board to assist the Government to make available the latest inventive genius of the country. Secretary Daniels has appointed Mr. Thomas A. Edison Chairman of this Advisory Board and has officially invited the Institute to secure the selection of two of its members to serve. on this Board. The Secretary in his letter states: "I feel that the work your Institute has done has been such as to give it the right to be in a way officially represented, and the Navy Department desires in this way to testify to its own appreciation of the splendid work for our country that your Institute has done. I have the emphatic approval of Mr. Edison, and he agrees entirely with me that your Institute should he represented in this way and that no better method of getting the kind of men we need could be devised." The invitation of the Secretary of the Navy has been officially accepted and steps have been taken to nominate the two members. Since the Constitution provides for no meeting of the Board of Directors until September, and as Secretary Daniels urged early action, the matter was discussed at a special meeting of the Executive Committee of the Institute, at which were present as many members of the Board of Directors as were in New York City at the time. Invitations were also extended to other members of the Institute who happened to be in the vicinity. At this meeting it was decided to submit the matter by a special letter-ballot to the Board of Directors and in doing so to suggest or nominate five members of the Institute, accompanying this nomination with the statement that the Directors might vote for two of the members so nominated or for any other members of the Institute not so nominated. It was voted at this meeting that it. was the sense of those present that in view of the fact that this committee was an advisory one the type of men to be chosen should be men of administrative or executive ability, cap-

Oil and gas activities in Indiana during 1943 continued to decline at about the same rate as in 1942. New development, production, and prospecting, all showed the results of Federal regulation, low price for crude oil and shortages of labor and materials. Several local stripper-well operations were shut down, but no large-scale abandonment has occurred as yet. During the year, 277 holes were drilled for oil and/or gas, of which 99 were completed as oil wells, 19 as gas wells and 159 as dry holes. This record was a decline of 21 per cent over last year in the total number of completed tests, 20 per cent in the number of oil wells and 9.5 per cent in the number of gas wells. As in the previous year, most of the drilling (82 per cent) was in the southwestern part of the state, Gibson County ranking first, with 77 completions and 49 oil wells. Posey County was second, with 59 completions and 20 oil wells. The remaining 18 per cent of the drilling was in the old Trenton oil and gas area. The total footage drilled during the year was 482,799 ft., a decline of 18 per cent from the previous year. Of this, 146,559 ft. was wildcat footage. The total initial production of the oil wells completed was 6362 bbl. and of the gas wells was 2,562,000 cu. feet. Three tests in the old Trenton area were drilled into the Cambrian and reported nothing more than tar residue. A Devonian test was to be made in the Griffin field in the Wabash River but owing to the delay caused by Federal restrictions this test did not get started in 1943. It is expected to spud in March 1944. The new discoveries in 1943 were virtually all in the southwestern part of the state, and all, so far, one-well pools, except the North Owensville pool, in Gibson County. The latter was brought in during the month of February and by the end of the year nine wells were producing in the pool, with a reported initial yield of 1260 bbl. per day. By the end of the year it had a daily average production of 401 bbl. and an accumulated production of 39,129 bbl. The average gravity of the oil is reported to be 35.6. On the Ohio-Indiana state line, early in 1943, a new pool was opened up in the old Trenton area. The discovery well was on the Ohio side of the line. An offset well was completed on the Indiana side, with an initial yield of 64 bbl., and settled down to 5 bbl. per day. This well produced 1154 bbl. up to Dec. 31, 1943. There was no further development here, because of the Federal Conservation Order M-68, restricting drilling to one well on 40 acres. The development pattern usually followed in this area is one well to 5 acres. The E. Rogers field was extended by one pool (Table 4). Most of the development in the oil-field pools during the year took place in the Kirksville pool, in Gibson County, and the Caborn pool, in Posey County. The crude-oil production in 1943 was approximately 5,273,000 bbl., a decline of 29 per cent from the previous year. The Griffin field, of Gibson and Posey Counties,
