Oil and gas activities in Indiana during 1943 continued to decline at about the same rate as in 1942. New development, production, and prospecting, all showed the results of Federal regulation, low price for crude oil and shortages of labor and materials. Several local stripper-well operations were shut down, but no large-scale abandonment has occurred as yet. During the year, 277 holes were drilled for oil and/or gas, of which 99 were completed as oil wells, 19 as gas wells and 159 as dry holes. This record was a decline of 21 per cent over last year in the total number of completed tests, 20 per cent in the number of oil wells and 9.5 per cent in the number of gas wells. As in the previous year, most of the drilling (82 per cent) was in the southwestern part of the state, Gibson County ranking first, with 77 completions and 49 oil wells. Posey County was second, with 59 completions and 20 oil wells. The remaining 18 per cent of the drilling was in the old Trenton oil and gas area. The total footage drilled during the year was 482,799 ft., a decline of 18 per cent from the previous year. Of this, 146,559 ft. was wildcat footage. The total initial production of the oil wells completed was 6362 bbl. and of the gas wells was 2,562,000 cu. feet. Three tests in the old Trenton area were drilled into the Cambrian and reported nothing more than tar residue. A Devonian test was to be made in the Griffin field in the Wabash River but owing to the delay caused by Federal restrictions this test did not get started in 1943. It is expected to spud in March 1944. The new discoveries in 1943 were virtually all in the southwestern part of the state, and all, so far, one-well pools, except the North Owensville pool, in Gibson County. The latter was brought in during the month of February and by the end of the year nine wells were producing in the pool, with a reported initial yield of 1260 bbl. per day. By the end of the year it had a daily average production of 401 bbl. and an accumulated production of 39,129 bbl. The average gravity of the oil is reported to be 35.6. On the Ohio-Indiana state line, early in 1943, a new pool was opened up in the old Trenton area. The discovery well was on the Ohio side of the line. An offset well was completed on the Indiana side, with an initial yield of 64 bbl., and settled down to 5 bbl. per day. This well produced 1154 bbl. up to Dec. 31, 1943. There was no further development here, because of the Federal Conservation Order M-68, restricting drilling to one well on 40 acres. The development pattern usually followed in this area is one well to 5 acres. The E. Rogers field was extended by one pool (Table 4). Most of the development in the oil-field pools during the year took place in the Kirksville pool, in Gibson County, and the Caborn pool, in Posey County. The crude-oil production in 1943 was approximately 5,273,000 bbl., a decline of 29 per cent from the previous year. The Griffin field, of Gibson and Posey Counties,

At the Zolder mine a S/7 computer is used for two purposes : - to monitor production at the coal face - to monitor the distribution of mine cars. By using sensors attached to equipment at the coal face and at the loading points, the computer provides realtime information and also summarized reports, which help management to control production better. The computer will display this information to the control room, where two operators monitor all production events and the availability of the right numbers of mine cars at every production face. All benefits obtained from the system are described.

The evolution of planning processes in the United States from the early 1900's is briefly examined. From one year operating budgets, planning processes have evolved into sophisticated analyses of alternative long-term future strategies and the management issues and practices which relate to their implementation. Increasing complexity within the business environment has led to numerous planning methodologies and extensive use of computers to analyze operating and financial information. All of these developments, however, have not supplanted the real need for decision-makers to continue to give important weight to the intuitive or soft data inputs into the planning process.

The State Mining Bureau of California under the direction of Fletcher Hamilton, State Mineralogist, is starting a field campaign to report on the economic minerals of California, which have an important industrial and military bearing on the present war situation. Particular interest and value attaches at the present moment to our available supplies of chrome, coal, iron, magnesite, manganese, molybdenum, quicksilver and tungsten. Trained geologists and engineers of the Bureau's staff are being sent, out to obtain information with relation to the latest developments. Advance notices will be sent to the local newspapers, from time to time, of the arrival of the engineers in the various districts. All persons interested in the minerals mentioned are earnestly urged to cooperate with the State Mining Bureau by meeting the field men while in their districts or by communicating direct with the State Mineralogist at his office in the Ferry Building, San Francisco. The State Mining Bureau has just issued Bulletin No. 72 on The Geologic Formations of California. It was written by Prof. James Perrin Smith of Stanford University, and contains a complete bibliography and resume of all of our present knowledge relative to the geological formations occurring in California. It also contains much previously unpublished data, and six tables showing geologic columns. It covers 41 pages.

IN all probability the mining and metallurgical industry as a whole can demonstrate a larger ecorlomic return from installation of dust-control equipment than any other major industrial group. This fact has partially accounted for the marked increase of dust-control installations made during the past decade. While the primary objectives for installation of dust-collecting systems are improved working and operating conditions for men and equipment, the fact that an economic return can be anticipated on salvageable materials is an added advantage which shows in partial or complete equipment write-off. The conditions apply to most phases of the mining, milling, and smelting industry, both non-metallic and metallic. As with any mechanical devices, selection of suitable dust collector equipment involves evaluation of available products with characteristics most nearly meeting conditions of the application at hand. When there is valuable product to be collected, and/or when there are possibilities of air pollution or public nuisance, collector selection is often guided by the maxim of "highest available collection efficiency at reasonable cost and reasonable maintenance." A brief review of dust collector designs will permit outlining of major characteristics of each group. Final selection will involve detailed data against a background of the problem under consideration. The dry centrifugal collectors, see Fig. 1, represent a group of low cost units with minimum maintenance. They are subject to abrasion under heavy abrasive dust loads and to plugging with moist materials. Efficiency drops off rapidly on particle sizes below the 10 to 20 micron group. Because of the large amounts of —10 micron particles in most mining dust problems, they will normally be used as primary collectors and will be followed by high efficiency units. This combination is cspecially popular where the bulk of material is desired in a dry state with wet collection indicated for the final cleanup portion. In remote plant locations, dry centrifugal~ can be used alone if product in dust form has no value or if dust loading is light enough to eliminate a nuisance in the plant area. Where high efficiency dust colleotion equipment must be selected, choice will normally involve fabric arresters, wet collectors, or high voltage Electro-Static precip-itators. Fabric arresters, see Fig. 2, rely on the passing of dust-laden air at low velocity through filter fabric. Velocity ranges from 1 to 3 fpm for the usual installation and may be as high as 10 to 20 fpm in arrangements where automatic frequent vibration or continuous cleaning of the filter media is employed. Fabric is normally suspended in either stocking type or in an enlvelope shape. Collection efficiency is excellent even on sub-micron particle sizes. Equipment is bulky, must be vibrated to remove the collected dust load, and is restricted in applications from temperature and moisture standpoints. Condensation of moisture on the fabric filter mcdia causes plugging of the passages with great reduction in air flow. Temperatures for the usual medias of cotton or wool are 180" and 200°F maximum, although the introduction of synthetic materials such as nylon, orlon, and glass cloth have increased the possibilities of this type of collector for higher temperature applications. The wet-type collector may employ a number of different principles so that entering dust particles in the gas stream are wetted and removed. Principles usually include impingement on collector surface or water droplets, often in combination with centrifugal forces. Variety of wet collector designs is indicated by typical collectors illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. Collection efficiency is a function of the particular design, although the better collectors will have high collection efficiency on particles in the 1-micron range. Wet collectors have the advantage of handling hot or moist gases, take up small space, and eliminate secondary dust problems during the disposal of the material. At times collection of the material wet is a disadvantage. Wet collectors may also be subject to corrosion and freezing factors. The high voltage Electro-Static precipitator, see Fig. 5, is probably the most expensive type of high efficiency collector. It finds its applications generally in problems in which collectors previously discussed cannot be employed. Its collection efficiency is based on its design features and can be excellent on the finest of fume particles. Material is normally collected dry. Gas temperatures are of no great concern as long as condensation does not occur within the dry type of precipitator and the temperatures do not exceed the limits for materials used in its construction. GABBS, Nev., in Nye County, is 140 miles southeast of Reno and about 31 miles north of the Southern Pacific railroad at Luning. The townsite lies at the eastern edge of Gabbs Valley, and plant and quarry operations are in the foothills of the Paradise Range at elevations from 5000 to 5900 ft. Hard-surfaced roads connect with main U. S. high- ways on the north and south. Historical Background: Brucite, a magnesium hydroxide mineral, was discovered in the Gabbs area in 1927 and magnesite, the magnesium carbonate, was found later on claims originally staked and worked for the tungsten mineral scheelite. A NEW preparation plant has been put in operation to treat coal from the recently opened Concord mine, located about 15 miles west of Birmingham, Ala., by the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co., a U. S. Steel subsidiary. The mine produces metallurgical grade coking coal from the American seam for use as coke in the company's blast furnaces at the Fairfield and Enseley works. The capacity of the operation is 1000 tons of run-of-mine per hr, approximately half of which is delivered to the by-product coke plant at Fairfield after beneficiation to metallurgical grade. The remaining portion of the mine run is rock and refuse removed during preparation. No boiler coal or other fuels are produced by this mine.

ThE basic equations describing continuous zone-melting via the zone-void method were reported by Pfann. Using these equations, a theoretical study was undertaken in this laboratory on the effect of the variation of the significant parameters of the zone-void system. These parameters are the zone length, 1, the heater length, h, and the effective distribution coefficient, k. The object of this study was to determine the effect of these parameters on and (where a = Cp/Cf and ß = Cw/Cf, Cp, C,, and Cf being, respectively, the solute concentration in product, waste, and feed) so that, in future application of this technique to the ultrapurification of materials, the effect of 1 and h would be predictable regardless of the value of k. The basic assumptions made by pfannl were, for the purposes of this study, assumed to hold. For k < 1, the steady-state solute distribution in the stripping section and the shift in this distribution brought about by passage of a void is shown in Fig. 7 of Ref. 1. In this section the definition of k and ß precludes the possibility of ß assuming values less than unity when k < 1. In the course of this investigation it was found that computations based on Pfann&apos;s equations gave values of ß less than unity in the region 1 > k > l/h for almost all values of Ls, where Further computations showed that 6 assumes negative values when k > 1 for many values of L,, 1, and h. Some time ago, in Mexico, our signal-bells in a 700-foot shaft caused us considerable annoyance by continually getting out of order, each time so delaying our hoisting operations that we naturally desired to remedy this evil. There were two mays open: either to patch up the old bell, which was of the ordinary pattern, every time it failed to work, or else to devise some new arrangement.. On consultation with our foreman we designed a signal-device which, during the number of months I watched its operation, worked satisfactorily, without once getting out of order. We sought to produce a simple device, in which no greater pull on the lever would be necessary from one level than from another; to counterbalance independently the weight of the pendant bell-rope, so that there would be no direct weight on the working-parts of the bell itself, and likewise to arrange it so as to necessitate only a light pull on the lever in signaling; and, finally, to make some sort of trip-arrangement, so that whenever the signaling-lever underground passed through a certain arc the signal would be given in the engine-room. More than 200 minerals are known that contain the rare-earths and thorium. Monazite and bastnaesite, however, are the principal commercial sources of the rare-earths, and monazite is the principal source of thorium. Monazite was in demand in earlier years mainly for its content of thorium, which was used in the manufacture of Welsbach gas mantles; but beginning in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the rare-earths became progressively more important than thorium. Recently, however, the tenor of thorium in monazite has again become a matter of commercial interest. Rare-Earths and Thorium The rare-earths proper are defined by spectroscopists as the oxides of 14 elements with atomic numbers ranging from 58 to 71; but more commonly lanthanum, with an atomic number of 57, is also included, in which case these 15 elements are often designated as the lanthanides. Chemists also include scandium and yttrium as elements of the rare-earths. A second group of elements, beginning with actinium and including thorium, protactinium, uranium, and all the transuranium elements so far produced, with atomic numbers ranging from 89 upward, are chemically and structurally related to the lanthanides, and are known as the higher rare-earths or actinides. Berzelius discovered that the lanthanides could be separated roughly into three groups, based upon the solubility of their double salts, R2(SO4)3-K2SO4-2H2O, in excess of K2SO4. This separation, with the substitution of sodium for potassium, is still used commercially. The double salts of the cerium earths were found to be almost insoluble; the terbium earths, partly soluble; and the yttrium earths, completely soluble. Based upon the degree of solubility, scandium belongs with the cerium earths; and yttrium belongs with, and gives its name to, the yttrium earths. These three groups with their atomic numbers are shown below. [ ] The prevailing state of oxidation for the rare-earths is R2O3, but cerium may readily be oxidized to the tetravalent state, in which condition it may be separated chemically from the other cerium earths. Praseodymium and terbium may also exist with the valence IV, and samarium, europium, and ytterbium may have the valence II. Most of the elements of the rare-earths, however, are very difficult to separate, and their initial isolation required the work of many chemists over a period of 150 years.20 Fractional crystallization, fractional precipitation, and ion exchange are the principal methods so far used, and fractional precipitation is now employed commercially on a large scale. Well pressure transient tests provide a means for directly obtaining information about formation pressure and reservoir flow capacity. Such tests have also been proposed for determining presence and location of faults or other reservoir closures and for measuring oil in place. For mathematical convenience, most theoretical studies have considered the reservoirs to be homogeneous. Definitive information is not yet available to show whether the actual presence of nonuniformities will make pressure transient behavior different from that of a uniform reservoir. The conclusions reached from actual transient tests are questionable, therefore, insofar as they rely on the original assumption of homogeneity. One type of nonuniformity commonly assumed to exist is that of stratification. In most reservoirs the strata are thought to be in vertical communication. Equations for the transient flow of a single-phase, compressible fluid in a one-well, bounded, circular reservoir have been solved for several situations involving crossflow between multiple strata of various thicknesses and permeabilities. The results show that except for the very early flow period, which usually is too short to be analyzed, the transient performance observed at the well is substantially identical with that of a homogeneous reservoir having the same dimensions and having the same steady-state flow capacity. Thus, stratification does not adversely affect interpretation of well transient tests. This conclusion holds for all commonly encountered combinations of reservoir thickness and external radius. Deviations are observed for unusually thick reservoirs whose outer radii are relatively small. The results of these studies also show that the presence and the amount of stratification cannot be simply diagnosed from reservoir pressure transient data when there is crossflow between strata. INTRODUCTION The last decade has brought wide acceptance of the transient well pressure test for determining reservoir parameters. Following the original work of Hurst and van Everdingen,1 the mathematical theory was thoroughly explored. Numerous authors have suggested how to determine static reservoir pressure, permeability-thickness product, original oil in place and reservoir limits for different reservoir geometry. The same mathematical techniques have been used to predict the transient performance of a reservoir over a long period of time. Most of the theoretical work has been for homogeneous, isotropic systems. Some results have also been presented for a homogeneous, anisotropic reservoir.2 Petroleum reservoirs are not homogeneous. The deposition process seems to favor creation of a stratified formation. This concept is sufficiently well accepted so that the most natural extension of the transient flow theory beyond the homogeneous case is to a stratified formation. Results for a stratified reservoir with no vertical communication between layers can be obtained from the results for a homogeneous reservoir. Lefkovitz, et a1,3 have given a thorough treatment of the two-layer case. Two recent papers4,5 have treated the case of a two-layered reservoir with vertical communication or crossflow, between layers. Russell and Prats4 find that, after a relatively short time, the two-layered reservoir with crossflow exhibits a simple exponential pressure decline. From this time forward, the behavior is not distinguishable from the behavior of a homogeneous reservoir having the same steady-state flow capacity. The results of Katz and Tek 5 are equivalent. Russell and Prats4 also speculate that a multi-layered reservoir with crossflow will behave as a homogeneous system after long enough production time "... providing the contrast in kh between layers is not too great". They also suggest that, at intermediate times, "... the relative positions of the layers with respect to each other will have a great influence on the production behavior and on the time at which the previously mentioned large-time approximation might be valid". The copper mines of the Keweenaw Peninsula in northern Michigan have long been of interest in connection with deep earth-temperature measurements. The extraordinary low geothermal gradient of l° F. in 223.7 ft. announced by Agassiz1 as a result of measurements dating from 1886, although later2 stated as in error, served to focus attention on this region as one offering, because of the great depth of the mines, unusual opportunity along this line. Lane,3 Van Orstrand4 and others have made valuable contributions to this study. Fresh opportunities afforded by the constant deepening of the mines, improvements in the accuracy and reliability of temperature-measuring instruments together with increasing knowledge of the heat conductivities and specific heats of the rocks, led the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in cooperation with some of the mining companies to renew work on this problem. It is planned eventually to complete a survey which will make use of the favorable opportunities for deep rock-temperature measurements presented in these mines. This survey should include the determination of a depth-temperature gradient in both conglomerate and arnygdaloid mines, and also the variations in temperature at the same depth in different geological formations. The first problem has a direct bearing on the question of providing equipment for necessary ventilation with increased depth. The second may show that a relation exists between the natural rock temperature and the mineral content of the formation. The measurements in all cases are to be guided by heat conduction considerations, to the end that they may represent as closely as possible

IN the preparation of this paper, the author has drawn upon experience with the operation of a blast furnace on 100 per cent scrap burden, which he believes was the first operation of its kind in the country. It is the writer&apos;s further belief that much of the controversy attending discussions of this subject may be obviated by the presentation of a group of facts that should be known by blast-furnace men and open-hearth men alike. The following question has been raised: "Is iron made with scrap in the blast-furnace charge as good iron as that made without scrap-made with straight ore?" This question may be answered in part by the fact that the open-hearth men of the Bethlehem Steel Co. who used pig iron from a blast furnace that operated on 100 per cent steel scrap found no difficulty in the processing of such iron other than that to be expected from the known analysis. OPERATION WITH 100 PER CENT STEEL SCRAP During World War I, there was accumulated at the Bethlehem plant of the Bethlehem Steel Co. some 22,000 tons of alloy-steel turnings and borings. This scrap material was highly corroded and, like alloy-steel turnings of that period, were as a drug on the market. There was also a small tonnage of scale, rich in valuable metal. If this scrap could be worked up into pig iron, it would become readily available for use in the open hearth. In order that the pig iron should contain the maximum percentage of nickel, permission was obtained from the Management to try a 100 per cent scrap operation. Accordingly, a blast furnace was swung over on July 25, 1919; the percentage of steel scrap increased more or less irregularly until July 29, when l00 per cent steel turnings were charged. Except for occasional charges of nickel scale as an "extra," the operation continued uninterruptedly until Aug. 27, when the furnace was swung back to the regular ore-ore and scrap-operation. During this period, the furnace production ranged from a low of 568.60 tons to a maximum of 766.07 tons. At the swing-over from i00 per cent scrap to the regular burden, the charge hung up rather severely. While the latter condition has nothing to do with the object of the paper, a brief discussion of the experience will appear later because of the interest it may have for blast-furnace operators. In Table I, results of the first and last days of the ore charge are shown, July 25 and July 29. The last column shows a summary for the period of maximum scrap charge. The furnace employed had a hearth 16 ft. 0 in., bosh 22 ft. 0 in., stock line 15 ft. 6 in., bell 11 ft. 6 in., batter ¾ in., bosh angle 73° 27&apos; and a Baker-Neuman top, with gas-engine blowers. IN this paper the authors aim to chronicle the experience and salient points brought out in changing flotation reagents at a concentrator which had probably been using a minimum amount of oil at a minimum cost per ton, to a more complicated system requiring a partial chemical control. The original oils were coal tar and pine oil. The new reagents are line, xanthate and pine oil. It was found that there were no insur-mountable difficulties and eventually the cost of the new reagents per ton of ore proved to be very little more than that of the old. LIME PLANT When the question of handling lime came up there were two propositions open: (1) to handle the lime dry; (2) to handle it wet in the form of an emulsion. Granting that a dry lime feeder would function properly, delivering lime uniformly, the chief objection was the dust that would be raised when these feeders were being charged or operated, as the only possible location was on a gallery beneath which men were working. With this objection the handling of lime as an emulsion seemed to he the better scheme. The lime plant which was first installed was for experimental work on one section. This was gradually changed and developed until it was of sufficient size to accommodate 20 sections. The various changes will not be discussed and the following description deals only with the fully developed plant. Crude as it is, and perhaps somewhat expensive to operate, the lime-handling plant has been quite successful. Much has been learned which will pave the way for a better installation in the future.

Knoop hardness in the rolling plane and in the longitudinal plane of hot-rolled and cold-rolled sheets of sublimed magnesiu?w was measured as a function of the angle between the long axis of the indenter and the rolling direction. These measurements were correlated with similar data taken on the (0001) and (1010) planes of a single crystal of magnesium where the hardness was measured as a function of the angle between the long axis of the indenter and the [1120] direction. The results were analyzed for compliance with the hypothesis of Daniels and Dunm to account for slip, and with a similar hypothesis to account for twinning. Some hardness anisotropy data are also presented for magnesium-indium and magnesium-lithium solid solution alloys. It is well known that the hardness of a crystalline specimen is different for its different surfaces, and also that the hardness is a function of direction within a single surface. Variations in hardness for single crystals have been found to be much larger than those for polycrystalline materials. Also, materials having low crystal symmetry were found to have a greater anisotropy of hardness than those of high symmetry. 0&apos;Neill1 and Pfeil,2 using a 1-mm Brine11 ball, studied single crystals of aluminum and iron, respectively; and they found a variation of hardness of about 10 pct between readings taken along the principal crystallographic faces. Daniels and Dunn3 found that the Knoop hardness number varied about 25 pct as the long axis of the indenter rotated on the basal plane of a zinc single crystal. The variation on the (1450) plane was about 100 pct, and the average hardness on this plane was about twice that of the basal plane. They also studied the variation of hardness within the (loo), (110), and (111) faces of a single crystal of silicon ferrite and found variations of about 25 pct although the average values for these planes were almost identical. Single crystals of zinc were also studied by Meincke.4 He found that the Vickers hardness numbers varied about 30 pct depending on whether the axis of the indenter was parallel or perpendicular to the (1010) and (1110) planes. Mott and Ford,5 using a Knoop indenter, found a 25 pct variation in hardness on the basal plane of zinc. Crow and Hinsley6 studied heavily cold-rolled bronze, steel, brass, copper, and other metals. They found that the difference in hardness numbers based on the difference in the length of the diagonals of the Vickers indenter was from 5 to 12 pct. Some minerals and synthetic stones show a very large anisotropy of hardness. Robertson and Van Meter7 found the Vickers hardness of arsenopyrite to vary from 633 to 1148 kg per mm2. stern8 using the double-cone method on synthetic corundum found the hardness number to vary from 950 to 2070. And winchell9 reported a variation of hardness number from 184 to 1205 in kyanite. The variation of hardness as a function of direction in a given crystallographic plane in single crystals possesses a periodicity which is related to the symmetry of the lattice. Daniels and Dunn3 found a six-fold periodicity of hardness in the (0001) plane of zinc. They found that the hardness curves of silicon ferrite had a four-fold symmetry in the (100) plane, a two-fold symmetry in the (110) plane, and a six-fold symmetry in the (111) plane. Mott and Ford5 also reported a six-fold symmetry of hardness in the basal plane of zinc. And vacher10 found two-, four-, and six-fold periodicities of hardness in copper on the (110), (100), and (111) planes, respectively. The purpose of this paper is to report the results of an investigation on the anisotropy of hardness as a function of orientation in single crystals of mannes-ium, and samples of rolled magnesium, magnesium-indium, and magnesium-lithium solid solution alloys. The anisotropy of hardness of pure magnesium which had been hot rolled, and then cold rolled various amounts to fracture, was studied by means of Knoop indentation hardness numbers; and the results were correlated with the preferred orientation as determined by quantitative X-ray pole-figure data. A comparison was made of the hardness data obtained from the rolled sheets and those of single crystals of magnesium. This paper describes the study of 23 nonmagnetic iron-formation samples from the Mesabi Range and shows the significance of their chemical, mineral, and physical properties in terms of their concentration. Data presented here resulted from a research project carried out from 1942 to 1952 by 10 major producers of iron ore, working in conjunction with Battelle Memorial Institute. THE inevitable depletion of Mesabi direct-shipping iron ores, hastened by recent wars, has increased the importance of developing methods to concentrate iron-formation materials. Many mining companies, independent research organizations, chemical companies, and equipment manufacturers are devoting attention to this important work. It is only natural that magnetic iron-formation materials have received major emphasis, since magnetic recovery methods apply and reserves of Mesabi magnetic taconites are large. However, the nonmagnetic* iron-formation materials are likewise believed to represent a large reserve and their study has not been neglected. tions over the years have shown that in addition to the unenriched taconite, which is dense and hard, and the direct-shipping ore, there are transition taconites grading into the friable wash, or intermediate ores. The transition taconites are less massive than the unaltered taconites and usually coarser-grained. This variation, coupled with the fact that there were no extensive drillings in the unaltered taconite, posed a most difficult problem of obtaining samples that would be representative of large tonnages of the fresh rock. The problem was increased by the tremendous extension of the nonmagnetic formation materials on the Mesabi and by the question of their accessibility to mining. A drilling program was evolved that would surmount these difficulties. Selection of samples was made by a committee representing producers in the area. The samples were procured from 1—taconite walls near bodies of stripping burden or wash ore and 2—from shafts in the process of being sunk through taconite for drainage or mining operations. Most of the samples were obtained from the cherty horizons because it became obvious early in the program that the slaty horizons represented an exceedingly difficult concentration problem, owing to the character of the gangue minerals and the fine grind required for liberation of the valuable minerals. More samples were procured from the lower cherty horizon than from the upper cherty because it was more accessible to mining. It is not known how well the samples selected represent the nonmagnetic iron-formation material. However, they were chosen by people Well acquainted with the geology of the Mesabi range and the mining problems involved. It is believed that they represent a fair cross-section of the types of materials that will be encountered. My first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,&apos; July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when collceiltrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products, and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the content in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal., in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg. or less. As a consequence of the smallness of the quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.
