THE U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently reported on the development of a process for preparing pure ductile titanium in substantial quantities' and on the physical properties that may be attained in the metal, when consolidated by powder metallurgy methods and fabricated by certain hot and cold-working procedures.2 The high physical properties (Table I), combined with excellent corrosion resistance and light weight, will lead no doubt to appropriate applications of the metal. In any application, methods of joining will be of considerable importance. The relatively high activity of the metal toward the common gases raises the question of weldability and conditions that might be required for successful welding. Since hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen embrittle the metal, it should be protected from these gases at elevated temperatures. This was demonstrated by a few preliminary trials of arc, gas, and resistance welding. In these trials only the resistance method proved to be immediately applicable. While atomic hydrogen welding of titanium may be successful in some instances, a considerable amount of development work will be required to prove its worth. In addition, it would be suited only to small assemblies that could be heated subsequently in a high vacuum to remove embrittling hydrogen. Heli-arc methods likewise would be limited to small assemblies, which could be completely protected by a helium atmosphere. It was quite apparent that titanium required more protection than was afforded by the normal flow of helium gas used for welding magnesium and aluminum. The hot metal is attacked by oxygen and nitrogen, and the rapid diffusion of the oxide into the metal prevents the formation of a protective coating and requires the helium atmosphere to be maintained until the weld has cooled nearly to room temperature. The preliminary work indicated that titanium could be successfully spot-welded without deterioration of the metal and that the microstructures of the welds were normal, exhibiting good bonding, and no oxidation. The high resistivity of titanium (53 microhms per cu. cm.) suggested that it would behave somewhat like stainless steel and allow considerable latitude in the several welding variables. The results reported here are intended to give a general picture of the effects of varying welding current, welding time, and tip pressure on single spot welds made on several different thicknesses of titanium sheet. The work was undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of welding titanium rather than as an exhaustive study of spot welding. There are, therefore, a number of factors that will require further investigation to establish the specific controls required for actual applications.

A glance at the list of papers1 that have been published since 1920 on the general subject of flotation suggests the variety of ideas that exist regarding the underlying cause of the phenomenon. Among these ideas, we find several coherent theories, but none that adequately and completely explain the phenomenon. Ralston2 and Bains3 suggested an electrical theory which has to do with the attachment of mineral particles to a bubble by the attraction of unlike electrical charges. This theory has its root in the fact that a bubble of air in pure water is electrified in such a way that the surfacc is negatively charged while the body of the water is positively charged. This result, which was first discussed by Helmholtz, also obtains when the water contains anything except a high concentration of hydrogen ions, or ions which are trivalent or tetravalent. The theory also holds that the mineral particles have positive charges on their surfaces, and so there is attachment between bubble surface and mineral particles by the old law of electrostatics, which states that unlike charges attract. Contact Angle and Oil Attraction The contact angle—the angle formed by a fluid-fluid boundary when both are in contact with a solid-—has been indicted several times for complicity in the phenomenon of flotation. This angle is supposed to indirectly measure the surface energy of a solid. Thus if we have two fluids in contact with a solid, we may express the difference between the two fluid-solid tensions as equal to the fluid-fluid tension times the cosine of the angle between the two fluids.4 If the two fluids are in contact with the solid, this is, no doubt, an excellent way of establishing relative surface energies. However, in flotation, we deal with substances which are not wetted by water. What assurance have we, then, that the angle

An increasing amount of attention is being paid to the possible influence of oxygen, in its several modes of occurrence in steel, upon some of the properties of the metal; but clearly investigations along this line are unlikely to yield significant results until reliable analytical methods for the determination of oxygen have been established. This paper presents some results of a study of an improved Ledebur method which aims to determine a definite portion of the oxygen; namely, that which presumably is present in diffusible form in the solid steel. These more or less preliminary results lead us to believe that the oxygen so determined has some significance; their presentation at this time will, we hope, stimulate discussion of, and focus attention upon, certain rather neglected aspects of the problem. Considerable work has been done recently on methods of estimating inclusions and on the vacuum-fusion method for oxygen; with results which, however, are of somewhat questionable significance. It is commonly presumed that the oxygen in a bath of molten steel in a furnace is present partly as a separate phase consisting of suspended particles of oxides or silicates, partly in solution, the latter being probably the more important. Upon addition of a deoxidizer, it reacts with some portion of the dissolved oxygen and precipitates it as additional suspended particles; the oxygen not eliminated in this way, which remains in solution in the liquid steel, may be regarded indifferently either as dissolved oxygen or as dissolved FeO. When the steel is poured, some of the suspended particles rise towards the surface, others remain trapped in the finished steel, appearing as nonmetallic inclusions in amounts corresponding usually to about 0.01 to 0.03 per cent Oz in the steel. The dissolved oxygen may be partly eliminated as CO during freezing of the ingot, but some remains either in solution or in part precipitated as FeO. Finished steels may thus contain oxygen in several forms: (1) In non-metallic inclusions which are probably quite insoluble in the solid metal at all temperatures; (2) in solid solution which at lower temperatures may be supersaturated; (3) in FeO particles produced by relief of this

IN the exploration of a copper deposit by drilling, obvious advantages are to be gained from a distinction between primary and secondary ore.1 Perhaps the chief of these is the aid which such a distinction renders in determining where a given hole should stop. The copper assay, often a sufficient guide, cannot always be exclusively relied upon. Primary ores may extend downward indefinitely and may fluctuate in value independently of depth: if primary ores are consistently lean for a considerable vertical distance, there is little reason to expect that, still deeper, they will increase to the commercial grade; on the other hand, rich primary ores may persist uninterruptedly downward or may come in again below a lean interval. Secondary ores, however, have a comparatively limited vertical extent; in a large way enrichment decreases with depth and finally gives out. It follows then, that when a hole descends from profitable ore into ore of less than the commercial minimum, the practical significance of the situation depends upon whether this decrease results from a decrease in secondary enrichment or is a variation in primary content: if the copper of the ore passed through has been chiefly secondary, little is gained in the average case by extending the hole much below the point at which the commercial limit is reached; but, when copper is chiefly primary, due weight must be given to the possibility that, still deeper, the ore may again improve.

Nickel sulfide ores lend themselves readily to concentration before smelting or pressure leaching, but neither of the major oxidized ore types-the iron-rich laterites and magnesium-rich, soft silicates-has been directly concentrated. Upgrading of crude ore in current practice is limited to cobbing lumps of the harder, lower grade rock (protore) from the softer, enriched silicate ore, because only a small percentage of the nickel in these ores occurs in discrete, contrasting mineral particles. There is no apparent mineralogical contrast in the superficial, iron-rich lateritic ores and, in fact, there is no firm assurance that the nickel atoms are within the lattices of the limonite minerals, or else irregularly adsorbed on the limonite. Within underlying, "rotten rock" silicates, occasional veinlets of garnierite and related nickeliferous silicates are found.1 The garnierite veinlets are only incidental, and the majority of the nickel atoms occur as erratic replacements of magnesium atoms in the micaceous chlorites of the ore mass.

Great strides have been made during the past few years in the field of rock mechanics, and steps have been taken to implement our newly acquired knowledge to advance the mining industry and improve the lot of the miner. This article is a summary of the latest progress in those areas of rock mechanics indicated by the subtitles. Let's look at these new tools for mining men. GROUND STABILITY DETERMINATIONS Much valuable information in the field of rock mechanics can be obtained by relatively simple, inexpensive measurements and observations, and this kind of investigation can be classed under the general heading of "Ground Stability Determinations." The instrumentation involved in this type of work is relatively simple and inexpensive, and its operation is not difficult to understand.1,2 Precise deformation measurements accurate to a few thousandths of an inch are very helpful in detecting stope convergence, pillar compression, floor heave, etc. Such measurements recorded over a period of weeks and months will detect and forwarn against failure of the overall mine structure long before any other visual evidence can be observed. Such advance warning then permits the introduction of sufficient artificial support in time to do some good. Instead of precise measurements which must be made with a special instrument, sensitive warning lights can be used which will flash red upon sensing movements as small as .002 or .003 in. These devices are well received by miners, and very practical under noisy conditions. High precision is important tit this area, but in large openings, engineer's tapes plus machinists scales reading to .01 in. may be sufficient. Uniform tensioning of the tape is of course essential. Long term, precise measurements have shown repeatedly that opening convergence lends to be slow and uniform except when accelerated to sudden large displacements by blasting, rock bursts or other sudden large scale failures. It is interesting to note that measurements in South Africa in very deep mines have shown 40% of the closure was footwall rise, and only 60% was hanging-wall sag.

There were present eleven Directors, the Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests. The Secretary, Bradley Stoughton, was appointed the representative of the Institute on the Board of. Directors of the American Bureau of Welding. A communication from a member of the Institute regarding simplified spelling was laid on the table. The following appropriations were made for the year. 1919: $250 to the Institute of Metals Division, $250 to the St. Louis Section, $100 to the Columbia Section. An invitation was received from the Western Society of Engineers to the Institute to use the facilities of that society during the A. I. M. E. Meeting in Chicago. The Bulletin of the Institute was presented to the French Congress of Engineers. There were elected twenty-eight members, eighteen associates, and three junior associates. The status of one member was changed from junior associate to associate. Four members were reinstated. An extension of time was granted to one member for payment of dues. The dues of four members on active military duty were suspended. Dues were remitted of four members who have been paying over thirty years, and who are each over seventy years of age.

THE mine and plant of the United Verde Copper Co., located in Yav-api County, at Jerome, Arizona, have been described in various technical publications and, therefore, a brief outline of its essential features will suffice. The orebodies are of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron-schist contact, with the orebodies extending about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. The mine is located on a mountain slope and has openings into it on three horizons, as follows: 1. Raises and ore passes open vertically into the shovel pit. These extend down to the 1000-ft. level, where they terminate as loading bins in the Hopewell adit. The main fan intake air shaft, which also extends vertically down to the 1000-ft. level, has its surface opening on the hillside at the extreme north end of the shovel pit, and the main mine air return exhausts through a raise at the extreme south end of the shovel pit. 2. The 500-ft. level adit. 3. The Hopewell adit on the 1000-ft. level. The mine has a vertical downward extent of 2000 ft. below the 1000-ft. level. Underground operations are carried on through two main shafts, both of which are wholly underground. Shaft 5 is the ore-hoisting shaft. It has three compartments and extends from the 800 to the 3150-ft. level. Shaft 6 is the service shaft, and is used for lowering and hoisting men and material. It has a large cage compartment and three smaller compartments for counterweights, ladderway, and pipe and power lines. This shaft extends from the 500 to the 2550-ft. level, and is now being extended to the 3000-ft. level. An air shaft for the downward movement of fresh air from the fan has been provided, and extends to the 2550-ft. level at this time. Work has been started to extend this air shaft to the 3000-ft. level. A return airway for vitiated mine air, in the form of raises and short connecting drifts, extends downward to the 2100-ft. level. The underground mining operations extend from the 300 to the 3000-ft. level. There are about 45 stopes in active operation on the 17 levels

PEoperly designed tubing strings make it possible to continue the flowing life of wells beyond the stage where ordinarily they would be put to pumping. Wells no longer able to flow through 2-in. tubing can be made to produce through smaller tubing if conditions within the well are carefully studied and correctly designed strings are installed. In this way, pumping expense may be postponed and in some pools it is within reason that the entire recovery may be obtained by natural flow if maintenance of pressure is practiced. Infrequent tubing changes would be necessary but their cost would be much less than that of installing and maintaining pumping equipment. If small wells are to be made to flow naturally, careful consideration must be given the actual lifting mechanics within the string, so that fairly accurate knowledge of reservoir conditions, especially pressure, is essential. Wells producing between 5 and 25 bbl. daily are classified here as "small wells." Exponential Flow A maximum of the energy contained in the expanding gas must be employed to do useful work if natural flow is to be continued. It is evident that adiabatic expansion would defeat this purpose, therefore the velocity of the gas must be held down to a minimum in order that isothermal expansion may be approached. Of course, true isothermal expansion would not be obtainable in an oil well, hence the use of the term "exponential." 1 Obviously the closer the approach to isothermal expansion, the more efficient the lift. Experiments by the U. 8. Bureau of Mines² have shown that for isothermal expansion to take place in a gas well where water is being produced, a definite relationship exists between the depth of the well and the minimum operating pressure. The latter must be such that the tubing fill-up, if static conditions prevailed, would be equivalent to 14 per cent of the distance between the top of the fluid inside the tubing and the tubing head. Research on roof bolting has developed significant information with respect to the functions that can be performed by properly installed bolts and the methods that can be used to ensure that effective installation has been achieved. The present paper brings together results that are pertinent to the design of a bolting system for reinforcing horizontally stratified mine roof with vertical bolts. The design approach is based on the use of bolts to decrease the maximum bending stress within an arbitrary sequence of roof strata (see Fig. 2) in which the only loads are the weights of the individual beds. The use of rock bolts to achieve other objectives, such as to stabilize a fractured rock mass on the periphery of a mine opening,3 is excluded from consideration herein. Reinforcing effect of bolts consists of a friction effect and a suspension effect in combination. "Friction effect" refers to reduction of bending in a stratified roof due to clamping action of tensioned bolts, which compress the strata, thereby creating frictional resistance to displacement along planes of stratification. (The flexure of a sequence of strata is necessarily accompanied by horizontal displacement of each bed with respect to its neighbor, along mutual surfaces of contact.) Although the sliding of the beds tends to exert a shearing effect on the bolts, tests show that this has negligible influence on the bending stresses, probably because the bolts are so far apart. "Suspension effect" refers to the transfer of part of the weight of the weaker or thinner strata to one or more thick strata, which occurs when strata with differing tendencies to deflect are constrained to have equal deflection. The term "suspension" is used irrespective of whether the thin strata are above or below the thick strata, because tests show that the supporting effect of the flexurally more rigid roof strata is for practical purposes independent of their position in a bolted sequence of strata. An earlier paper4 dealt with a bolted unit in which all strata had equal flexural rigidity; bolting could develop a friction effect but no suspension effect. The present paper deals primarily with a bolted unit in which all strata do not have equal flexural rigidity, so that bolting can develop both a friction effect and a suspension effect. The reinforcing effect of the bolts was determined by a combination of experimental and theoretical stress analysis.4'6'7 The experimental method consisted of loading a model by rotating it in a centrifuge to simulate the gravity forces exerted about an underground excavation. Models were made from two different limestones, although the results are independent of the material because the elastic constants were taken into account in the data analysis. Electric resistance strain gages were bonded to the highest and lowest members of the bolted unit to determine the outer-fiber bending strains at the center and at the supports. The quantitative results presented herein are based on tests of 56 different models, which included a range of values for the structural parameters. Each model was tested several times, with different combinations of spacing and tension of the bolts. DESIGN EQUATIONS The effects of friction and suspension on the flexure of a bolted stratified roof can be expressed by the following equations, which give the maximum bending stress, the deflection, the friction effect, the suspension effect and the transferred load for any (the i-th) member of the bolted unit in terms of the structural parameters:

Geographical Distribution 'he most important known deposits in Australia of what are commonly referred to as the beach-sand minerals are along the most easterly part of the Australian coast, between Southport, 17 miles north of the Queensland-New South Wales border, and Ballina, 50 miles south of the border, and most of the production has come from this area (Fig I). Smaller deposits are known to occur farther to the south at intervals for several hundred miles, and beaches have been worked at Yamba, 96 miles south and Woolgoolga, 150 miles south of the border and at Swansea, 60 miles north of Sydney. Important deposits have been shown to exist on north Stradbroke Island and others have been located farther to the north, as far as Tin Can Bay at the south end of Frazer Island. (Fig 2). Table I gives the list of operators with the location of their deposits and workings, their approximate maximum monthly capacity expressed in tons of heavy mineral produced by their concentrating plants before separation into individual mineral concentrates, their methods of mining and concentrating the minerals, and the products obtained. This table applies as of June 1948, but all the operators are remodeling or improving their plants and plant practices will be modified accordingly. In addition, active boring campaigns have been carried out by Alluvial Gold, Ltd., of Sydney, in the Cudgen-Cudgera area, and by Zinc Corporation Ltd., of Melbourne, on Stradbroke Island, and in other places. Physiography Submergence of the order of 100 to 200 ft at the close of the Pleistocene period left the pre-existing hills as promontories and the valleys as deep inlets. Wave action has built bay-bars and sandspits in a northerly direction from the headlands, and lakes and marshes have formed between these bars and the initial post-submergence coast line. These lakes and swamps have been or are being filled in by river-borne sediments or wind-blown sand. Beasley1 has presented evidence that suggests a recent emergence of the coast line of about 10 ft. The evidence for this belief is the presence of a black sand seam 1/3 mile inland and 17 ft above sea level (Fig 3), and although it is not entirely certain that this seam is of beach formation and owes nothing to windblown concentration, other evidence supports the suggestion of recent emergence. Such emergence would undoubtedly aid the formation of bars and sandspits and the easterly progress of the beach front, leaving a series of parallel dunes (Fig 4). This belt of north-south coastal dunes ranges up to 56 mile in width and as many as 15 lines of dune have been counted (Fig 3). The foredune is generally the highest, upto 25 ft high, and there is in many places a flat platform in front of the dune known as the berm. The dunes behind the foredune are lower and less well defined

Studies of the forces and conditions governing the recovery of petroleum from natural reservoirs indicate that a low gas-oil ratio increases ultimate recovery, retards the encroachment of water and tends to reduce lifting costs. Methods for controlling and reducing gas-oil ratios in producing wells consequently have been given considerable attention during the past few years. However, during this same period, the production from wells in nearly all fields has been fixed by proration agreements and it is the opinion of the writer that where a well is required to produce steadily at a predetermined rate, less than its "potential" or maximum capacity, the gas-oil ratio will depend only upon the rate of production, and will be independent of the method of production and of the design of equipment in the well. If no change in the rate of production is contemplated, efforts directed to improving the gas-oil ratio by altering the diameter of the flow string, changing the position of the choke, assisting the flow with gas-lift or pump, etc., will be unsuccessful. This viewpoint is not new. It was presented by H. N. Marsh and B. H. Robinson in 1929,' but it has not been generally accepted. Although engineers believe that the rate of withdrawal and not the equip ment used governs the water-oil ratio, a similar opinion regarding the gas-oil ratio is not so commonly admitted. The rates of flow of oil and gas into the base of an oil well depend upon the following conditions: 1. The characterist-ics of the oil and gas. 2. The characteristics of the underground reservoir. 3. Temperature and pressure conditions in the reservoir. 4. The back-pressure held against the face of the sand. In operating a well, the only one of these conditions over which control may be exercised through operating procedure and the use of equipment above the sand is the back-pressure at the face of the sand. A study has been made to determine the effects of random vertical fractures existing in a reservoir matrix on the effective matrix properties and producing characteristics of a well. The study indicated that short vertical fractures may distort the isopotentials by 1 percent in the vicinity of the fracture. A correlation was developed which showed the effect of fracture density on the producing capacity of a well. The correlation indicated that fracture shape had little effect on producing capacity, but that total fracture length was closely correlated with the producing capacity. Effective values of reservoir permeability were found to correlate closely with fracture density when measured parallel to the direction of flow. INTRODUCTION In reviewing the petroleum literature, it is found that in most analytical solutions of hydrocarbon reservoir behavior the assumption is made that the rock is uniform throughout although core analysis and well logging surveys indicate that substantially all reservoirs are heterogeneous and some are fractured. Only in recent years have investigators studied the effects of reservoir hetrogeneity. Russell1 discussed the effect of fractures in reservoirs. The literature indicates that fractures greatly affect the exploitation of man reservoirs. This is described by Elkins and Skov2 and Little-field et al. 3 Several types of reservoir heterogeneity have been studied by unsteady-state methods. In 1959, Landrum et al. 4 showed that transient phenomena in hydrocarbon reservoirs could be studied by thermal models. pickering5 studied the flow of heat in stratified linear reservoirs consisting of plates of different metals separated by sheets of rubber which were suddenly exposed to a low-temperature source at one end. Cotman6 studied both laterally and vertically heterogeneous thermal model reservoirs with special reference to cross flow. Another type of reservoir heterogeneity involves the presence of highly permeable, circular lenses around or near the wellbore which was studied by Miesch7 using a thermal and a steady-state model. Many studies have been made of the effects of induced hydraulic fractures on well performance. 8-10 Work regarding vertical fractures that exist initially in the reservoir was reported by Givens, et al.11 Since there appears to be little published work on the importance and influence on reservoir performance of fractures that exist out in the rock matrix, this study was conducted to determine the effects of vertical fractures on pressure distribution, producing capacity and the effective permeability of the reservoir rock. The analogy between the flow of electrical current through a conducting body and the flow of fluid in a porous medium provides a convenient method of studying various aspects of petroleum reservoirs. For electrical radial steady-state flow,12 For steady-state fluid flow, With the above analogy, it is only necessary to establish the ratio of the values of the electrical units in terms of the corresponding flow units to make the analogy quantitative. The ratios are shown below.

The results of a study on the preparation of thin-film capacitor structures are discussed. The dietectric source material was quartz which was sputtered and deposited onto aluminum electrodes and counter-electroded to complete the metal-oxide-metal structures. This configuration was utilized to evaluate the dielectric, the device characteristics, and related process parameters. The effect of gas sputtering pressure, magnetic field strength, source-to-substrate distance, and power density on the rate of deposition is shown. Increased film thickness uniformity over a 3 by 3 in. area by optimum substrate positioning is indicated. Dielectric constant, dissipation factor, dielectric breakdown strength, insulation resistance, heat treatment, capacitance, and dissipation over the range 400 Hz to 5 MHz are reported. In the fabrication of silicon-integrated circuits, silicon dioxide has found use as a material suitable as a diffusion mask, for surface passivation of the silicon, and for protection of conductive films used for interconnections. Its use as a dielectric for thin-film capacitors in film hybrid circuits has been limited, to a degree, for lack of a compatible processing technique and because of its relatively low dielectric constant. With the recent advent of practical metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) field effect devices, the material is now being used to insulate the gate electrode from the conducting channel in the silicon. In this latter application, more stringent requirements have been imposed on .the oxide. A comprehensive resume of the use of silicon dioxide in integrated silicon device technology has been compiled including oxide film and bulk properties, method of oxide formations, and their applications.' A relatively new process to deposit SiO, and other dieIectrics is by rf sputtering, and the purpose of this paper is to describe the behavior of capacitors fabricated with a dielectric which has been sputtered from a quartz target and to indicate the relative effect of several of the process parameters on the film deposition. Work on rf sputtering of SiO2 and other dielectrics has been reported utilizing a triode type of sputtering system as described herein or a diode self-sustained glow discharge system. 2-8 SPUTTERING The process occurs during an electrical discharge in a gas plasma which provides the ions for acceleration to the target to produce the desired sputtering. This mine is situated upon the western slope of the Meadow Valley mountains, about 70 miles by road from the present end of the railroad-track, which is at Uvada, on the UtahNevada boundary. This boundary-line marks fairly well a certain change in type of scenery from western Utah to eastern Nevada,—from a region in which the desert valleys predominate over the mountain ranges to one in which they are in about equal proportion. The railroad from Salt Lake City runs somewhat W. of S., for the most part along the bottom of the ancient Lake Bonneville. The latter part of its present course follows the axis of the southern arm or bay of that lake, now known as the Escalante desert. Along this bay, its line is a mathematically straight one, with no perceptible change of level for two " tangents " of more than 30 miles each, varying but a few degrees in direction. IN developing the orebody on lower levels of the Star mine at Burke, Idaho, Hecla Mining Co. is faced with a serious problem in driving raises. Levels are at 200-ft intervals. As a raise is being driven between levels, at points about 70 and 130 ft from the sill, heavy pressure arches develop and the raise becomes extremely hazardous. Eventually, following a blast, caving occurs, making it impossible to recover the raise. In February 1957 it was decided to attempt sinking a small winze on the vein from the 5500 to the 5700 level. This shaft (winze-raise No. 2) was to be used as a raise prior to stoping. It was assumed, and correctly, that the heavy ground pressure could be controlled by timbering close to the bottom after each advance.

Thin films (of mica have unique attributes that are exceptionally good for studies of high-field conduction mechamisms in thin-film insulators and the quantum mechanical tunneling of electrons from metal to metal. The principal advantages of using mica films are that the films are crystalline and the cleavage planes occur every 10Å. This property results in films whose thicknesses are integral multiples of 10Å and whose surfaces are uniformly parallel over sizable areas. Hence, very well-defined metal -mica-metal structures are possible. Furthermore, the fact that the insulator is split fro??! a bulk sample allows the index of refraction, dielectric constant, forbidden energy gap, and trapping levels and their density- to be obtained directly from measurements performed on thick samples Of mica rather than requiring that these properties be interred from the conduction characterrsties alone. In the work to he described, all the cleaving was done in a high vacuum just prior to the evaporation of metal elertrodes so as to avoid air contamination at the interfaces. Results of these studies indicate that the current through the 30 and 40Å films exhibited quantitative agreement with the theoretical voltage and temperature dependence derived by Strallon for the tunneling of electrons directly from metal to metal. Thicker films at room temperature exhibited volt-ampere curves suggesting Schottky emission of electrons from the cathode into the conduction band of mica. However, the thermal activation energy was smaller than that found from other measurements, and the experimsntal Schottky dielectric constant was larger than the square of the index of refraction. These facts would indicate that the electrons were being injected into polaron stales ill the iusulator. At low temperatures and high fields, the current through the thicker films did not exhibit the Fowler -Nordheim dependence as would be predicted by a simple extention of the theory of field emission into a vacuum. THE mechanism of electrons tunneling through insulating films has received considerable attention in the last few years due to the devices possible utilizing tunneling'-4 and the success of tunneling in the study of superconductivity.5,6 Until the recent paper by Hartman and chivian7 on the study of aluminum oxide, there had been no reported successful quantitative experimental fit to the theory. Their method of fabrication necessarily results in a polycrystalline insulator, the stoichiometry of which is nonuniform from one side to the other. This structure also introduces complications to the shape of the barrier which is set up by the insulator since the insulator possesses a spatially nonuniform band structure and dielectric constant. Due to these facts an analysis of the data in terms of a pviori barrier shape is of questionable validity. The use of muscovite mica not only overcomes these disadvantages but, as an insulating thin film, provides physical properties (dielectric constant. trapping levels and their densities, forbidden energy gap, and so forth) that are identical to the easily measured values of the bulk sample. Furthermore, it is a single-crystal insulator whose cleavage planes (10Å apart8,9) provide uniformly parallel surfaces of well-known separation. This material is therefore ideally suited to the study of electron-transport phenomena. Von Hippel10 using a 6.5-µ-thick sample was the first to observe the high-field conductivity (=5 x l06 v per cm) of mica. No attempt was made to develop an empirical formula, but Von Hippel concluded from intuitive arguments that the current was being space-charge limited by trapped electrons. Mal'tsev11 in a more recent investigation at high fields observed a dependence of the conductivity a on the field F of the form exp(ßF1/2). This dependence was attributed to the Frenkel effect,12,13 a Schottky type of emission from filled traps. No mention in the English abstract was made of the thicknesses of his samples or, and more important, of how well the value of ß fit Frenkel's theory. In 1962 Foote and Kazan14 developed a technique for splitting mica to a thickness of less than 100Å and observed a dependence of the current density j on the field of the form j = jo exp(ßF1/2) on a thin sample thought to be 40Å thick. Assuming that this was a Schottky emission process and that the appropriate dielectric constant for such a mechanism would be closer to a low-frequency value of 7.6, Foote and Kazan calculated from ß an independent thickness of the mica of 36Å. No further investigation was made of the phenomenon. However, the work reported in this paper indicates that the film measured by Foote and Kazan was probably 60Å thick, the error arising from the measurement of the very small metal-insulator-metal diode areas that were used, along with the diode capacitance and dielectric constant, to calculate the thickness. In the research reported in this paper, Foote and Kazan's technique was modified to cleave muscovite in a vacuum of 10-6 Torr, immediately after which metal electrodes were evaporated creating Au-mica-A1 diodes. AS a means for increasing the efficiency in modern blast-furnaces by supplying to them blast of a much higher temperature than is now possible, the writer offers as a suggestion a modification in the construction of regenerative hot-blast stoves. Stated briefly, the plan proposed is to pre-heat both the gas and the air for its combustion in a manner similar to that generally adopted in Siemens openhearth furnaces. After thus carrying the temperature of the stove to a point much higher than that common in hot-hlast stoves, the cold blast passes through it. Without entering into the details relating to the reversing valves and the system of flues, the general plan may be outlined as follows, referring to the accompanying drawings: The valves are so placed in heating up the stove that the blast-furnace gas enters at B, Fig. 1, and the cold air for combustion at A. Ascending in flues, F and E, respectively, combustible gas and air meet and mix in the combustion-chamber, I. Flowing through K, they descend through the flues, G and H, escaping through the chimney. In this manner the walls of the combustion. chambers, I and L, are highly heated, and the right-hand side of the stove is carried to a higher temperature. By reversing the valves, blast-furnace gas enters at C and cold air for combustion at D. Both are pre-heated in their ascent through the flues, G and H. They burn in the combustion-chamber, L, and the hot gases of combustion, flowing through K, I, E and F to A and B, heat the left-hand side of the stove. In this manner the stove is carried to a temperature greater than that of those now generally in use, in which air and gas are burned without preliminary pre-heating. In the plan proposed, that side of the stove will, of course, be relatively cooler through which cold air and furnace-gas last passed in its ascent to its combustion-chamber. After having sufficiently heated the stove in the manner outlined, the cold blast is admitted through all the flues, A, B, C and D. Amid the violent economic changes of recent years that have affected Canadian gold-mining operations so deeply, the discovery and early developments of Kirkland Lake might easily be overlooked. There was more than one "false dawn" for the district before developments finally established the fact of a superb mineralized zone extending through the present operating properties. Never far from the railway, Kirkland Lake has had the benefit of direct rail service for many years. The pioneer discovery on which the first mill and cyanide plant was erected was the "Tough-Oakes," this property being on what is now the eastern end of the producing area; some time later, the "Lake Shore" was discovered at the present center of the district, and a small plant was built upon it also. Both of these early treatment plants were of pre-war design. Progress in gold metallurgy has caused a gradual change in cyanide practice since the early days at Kirkland Lake, which may be observed in the various plants now operating there. From the beginning, it was recognized that Kirkland Lake ores were more responsive to cyanidation than to alternative recovery methods, and that their mineralization contained gold in very finely divided form. Although sulfides and tellurides are present, the quantity is small, being in the order of 1 or 2 per cent by weight, so that gravity concentration is undesirable, since gold is not confined to the sulfides. Some complication is offered by the presence of tellurides, which have caused lengthy controversy over their importance in recovery methods, but which are now generally regarded as less harmful in the light of increasingly high recoveries being obtained. Nevertheless, finely divided gold intimately associated with sulfides in the presence of tellurides; and occurring in the hard Kirkland Lake porphyry ore, substantially free from natural slime-forming constituents, indicates fine grinding. This has been the universal practice although the degree of grinding has varied a little among the different mills and is considerably finer now than formerly. The natural condition as outlined caused the establishment of fine grinding at an early stage in the development of Kirkland Lake, during the period of valuation of gold at, $20.67 per ounce.
