The procedure for scaling breakage parameters determined in a laboratory mill to values for a full-scale mill is briefly presented. A simulation model of a closed circuit mill also requires a model of residence time distribution, a mass transfer law to predict over-filling as a function of flow rate through the mill, and a model to describe classification action. For fine dry grinding, or viscous slurry grinding, it is necessary to allow for slowing-down of breakage rates for a fine mill charge. Four examples of comparing simulation models to actual plant data are presented. The first is wet grinding of copper ore in normal closed circuit at 50 tph (metric) production, under conditions where the mill does not overfill. The second is the wet grinding of copper ore in reversed closed circuit at production of 87, 102 and 108 tph, with flow through the mill of approximately 150, 200 and 300 tph. The third is dry grinding of coal with a hot air sweeping stream to remove all of the coal as air-borne material, in open and normal closed circuit. The fourth is grinding of cement clinker in a two-compartment, air-swept tube mill in normal closed circuit with two different classifiers, producing 120 tph of 3250 Blaine cement. In all cases the simulated capacities and product size distributions were in reasonable agreement with actual plant performance.

During 1938, the exploratory drilling by the D'Arcy Exploration Co. Ltd., subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. Ltd., was continued. The original basis of the search for oil and results to the end of 1937 have already been described.' During 1938 two further wells were drilled in the south, making a total of five wells completed in that part of England. Test wells were also commenced in the Midlands, East Yorkshire and Scotland, where one well, which proved natural gas, was completed during the year. Southern England.—The test well at Kingsclere, in Hampshire, which at the end of 1937 had reached a depth of 5032 ft. in the Lower Lias, entered the Trias at 5060 ft. and was abandoned in that formation at a depth of 5125 ft. A shallow test well was also drilled near Pevensey, in Sussex, to test the lower horizons of the Wealden series and the Purbeck and Portland beds. Traces of oil were encountered in the Wealden series but no production was obtained and the well was abandoned at a depth of 842 ft. in the Kimeridge clay, which underlies the Portland beds. A geological borehole was begun north of Lulworth in Dorset, where the outcropping Wealden series, Lower Cretaceous, is strongly impregnated with oil, to determine whether a more pronounced pre-Albian anticline underlies the very gentle arch of the unconformable Upper Cretaceous. Drilling is not yet completed. Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire ad Yorkshire.—Geophysical investigations were continued in the eastern part of England where the structural conditions of the Carboniferous rocks are concealed by an unconformable blanket of Permian and younger sediments. Seismic methods failed to confirm the structural picture obtained by the previous gravity traverses, but confirmation of a structure near Ollerton, Nottinghamshire, which was suspected on evidence from colliery workings, was obtained. A location was made for a test well on this structure. Eskdale No. 1, begun on the Eskdale pericline near Whitby, in Yorkshire, to test the magnesian limestone of Permian age, was abandoned at a depth of 2486 ft. in the Trias after protracted fishing operations. GRINDING costs are an important item in cement manufacture, and the cost of power is one of the large items in grinding costs. Even where power is of secondary importance, cost items dependent on mill capacity are influenced by the efficiency with which the mill uses power. Tube mills typify the grinding mills most generally used in cement plants, though other types are in use. Tube mills have been widely criticized as being extremely inefficient, and this feeling regarding them has led to many attempts to design more efficient grinding equipment. Other types may be an improvement over tube mills, but the improvement has certainly not been revolutionary, at least as applied to clinker grinding. The very fact that there is doubt regarding the relative efficacy of various types of mills is an indication that an adequate basis for an analysis of performance is lacking. The development of methods of analyzing mill performance has been hampered by the lack of a suitable method for measuring the work actu-ally done in pulverizing. There has been no acceptable standard to which mill performance might be compared. As a consequence, it was not known whether the margin of possible improvement in pulverizing operations was large or small. Even direct comparison of different types of mills was seldom possible because most plants had only one type of mill for each type of service. Comparisons between plants were difficult because of differences in the grinding characteristics of various clinkers. Some recent developments complete a chain of circumstances that place the cement, industry in a particularly fortunate position for the study of its clinker-pulverizing operations. Modern investigators of grinding phenomena have generally agreed that the best measure of mill performance is the production of new surface. For most materials this measure of performance is largely theoretical and has a rather remote connection with the practical aims of the grinding operation. In clinker grinding, on the other hand, surface area is intimately connected with the properties conferred on the cement by grinding. Both centrifugal and reciprocating-type pumps have been widely used in the transport of slurries. Although with some limitations, centrifugal pumps may be used, especially for short-haul systems, however, for the long pipelines the reciprocating pumps are better suited. A state-of-the-art review is presented in which a discussion of applications is made and some of the problems associated with meeting the proper design conditions for satisfactory service are discussed. Several developments underway give considerable promise of better pumps in the future, although the current level of development provides for an economical means to move slurries. The movement of liquids in pipelines necessarily occasions the use of pumps. The petroleum industry is familiar with the transport of solids through mud pumps and cementing and fracturing pumps where the movement of slurries is an everyday matter. In the drilling of an oil well, the circulating fluid utilized to remove drill cuttings is called drilling mud. This substance is usually a fairly sophisticated material designed to develop certain characteristics desirable in the drilling process. The cuttings are suspended in a moving column of this fluid and brought to the surface. The separation of the cuttings from the drilling fluids is accomplished by the use of shaker screens and settling pits; however, it is impractical to remove the cuttings completely and as a result they are pumped through the mud pumps back into the circulating stream. Over the years, mud pumps have been improved so that rather long life can be obtained from liquid end parts subject to the attritional effects of the abrasive-laden fluid. It is from this background that reciprocating-type slurry pumps have been developed. Centrifugal Pumps Centrifugal pumps have also been used to transport solids, where low heads are required, typically up to 200 ft or so, and for short hauls. The centrifugal pump is a hydrokinetic device wherein the increase in velocity of a fluid stream is converted to head, and to achieve high heads a large change in velocity is necessary. Abrasive laden fluids cause wear on impellers and casings as a result of erosion by the fluid and the suspended particles. Centrifugal pumps, therefore, can only be used where the internal velocity of flow is rela- tively low. The advantage of centrifugal pumps is their high capacity at relatively low capital cost and usually relatively small space requirement. One of the disadvantages of the centrifugal pump when used in slurry pipelining can be seen in its typical pressure-volume performance relationship, which tends to work against the application (see Fig. I). If an increase in pressure (head) is occasioned by flow restrictions in the pipeline, say by the dropping out of solids, a desirable characteristic of a slurry pump would be that it develop increased pressure to overcome the restriction. The centrifugal pump provides the increased pressure only at the expense of considerably reduced volume which then results in a lower flow velocity. With the reduced flow rate, adequate velocity to hold the material in suspension and keep it flowing in the line might not be achieved. If centrifugal pumps are considerd for the movement of solids in a long line, a series of pumps must be staged in order to provide the necessary motivating force. Systematic projections of mineral supply, demand and prices are an integral part of the mineral sector planning process. As such, their primary value is not as prophecies but as devices for imposing discipline on thinking about the future and as means of ensuring consistency in policy decisions. Both the present and the broad outline of the future as presently discernable affect projections on specific minerals. The present world mineral situation reflects most prominantly the recent commodity cycle while our view of the future is largely shaped by perceptions and attitudes of policy-makers and the public over larger issues. Mineral commodities are of considerable importance to various countries. This in itself dictates a strong interest in systematic projection activities, the need for which is heightened by the volatility of certain basic variables affecting mineral demand in the world. It is useful for presentation purposes to discuss the various techniques suited for projecting mineral trends under three principal headings, viz., econometric modeling, systems analysis and technological forecasting. In addition, two specialized variants, input-output analysis and resource base modeling, are discussed. In each case, a brief description of the approach and some indication of its application to projections of mineral commodities are provided.

Brass mills are familiar with a recurring problem which reveals itself during deformation of annealed metal as an opening up of cracks which are suggestive of a grain boundary pattern. A typical example is seen in Fig 1, which shows part of the convex surface of a cartridge brass disc which was slightly dished by the punching operation. Another illustration of the same type of defect was found in the surface of a finished cartridge case which split open on firing. These cracks, shown in Fig 2, were away from the split but indicate the presence of the type of weakness which permitted the splitting. Usually the weakness consists of separate cracks, the lengths of which are of the same order of magnitude as the grain size prior to the final anneal. Their typical appearance in a polished section is shown in Fig 3. This structure was found below the surface of a fractured tensile-specimen that had been cut from a large cartridge blank showing the defects on its convex surface. While the pattern formed by these cracks suggests a grain boundary origin, the cracks bear no relation to the currently existing grain structure. Thus Fig 3 shows that the grains have grown up to cracks already present. Since it is doubtful that the cracks were present in the metal before the anneal, they must have formed during the anneal but prior to recrystallization. The term "fire-cracking" has been generally applied to cracking that occurs during an anneal under the influence of internal stress, but refers more specifically to obvious macroscopic cracking attributable to the presence of a low melting phase, usually lead. Since the type of cracking described above may occur when the lead content is very low, we have considered it a somewhat different phenomenon, and have called it "inter-granular parting." While most examples involve cartridge brass, intergranular parting has also been observed in the fabrication of large seamless tubes from discs of both 85/15 red brass and 70/30 cupro-nickel. Similar cracking in nickel silver was investigated by Jones and Whitehead,1 who showed that it could occur during healing or cooling. That which occurred on heating they called "fire cracking," and they suggested that, a transformation at about 320°C might account for its occurrence. It was felt in this laboratory that the observed parting was probably one aspect of the general observation, first made by Rosenhain and Archbutt,2 that a tendency toward intergranular fracture under tensile stress increases with increasing temperature and decreasing rate of strain. In this case the stress involved would be internal. The rate of strain would be exceedingly slow, a localized internal creep. Reference to the literature uncovered no efforts to extend the observations of Rosenhain to conditions involving only internal stress. Accordingly, an exploratory research, sufficient in detail to satisfy us as to the probable truth of this explanation of the observed intergranular parting, was undertaken. The internal stresses present during the early stages of an anneal (prior to recrystallization) would be from two sources: residual stresses developed during deformation, and thermal stresses caused by uneven heating and expansion. Thermal stresses would vary widely according to shape, size and manner of heating, and can be considered as supplementary to residual stresses. It seemed necessary to determine the stress and temperature conditions under which parting would occur in a relatively short time, and then to establish whether or not in- ternal stresses may persist to an extent adequate to cause parting at such temperatures. (Jones and Whitehead1 and Moore and Beckinsale3 made tests which indicated that stress relief required an appreciable time.) During the course of the research the desirability of studying the effect of grain size became apparent, and this factor is one of the major variables of our investigation. Intergranular Parting under Tension at Elevated Temperatures In early experiments, hard 70/30 brass tensile specimens, with unknown residual stresses, held for 10 min. at applied stresses from 30,000 to 40,000 psi at temperatures from 300 to 350°C, showed no macroscopically visible cracks when unloaded and cooled, but cracks very similar in appearance to those observed in commercial practice were revealed in these specimens by pulling them to fracture. Annealed specimens, on the other hand, showed no cracks in such experiments, apparently because they deformed plastically at stresses below those necessary to cause parting in a reasonable time. Hence, the specimens used for this study were first strengthened by cold tensile elongation, giving them an unavoidable residual stress pattern (determined largely by grain size and orientation) which would, however, correspond in direction, at least, to the stress pattern obtained under stress at temperature. A variation in these residual stresses might be expected with variations in grain size, but following any given anneal the reproducibility of stress pattern should be as good as that of the grain size measurement. With no information as to the effect of the amount of prior deformation, tests were conducted on specimens given the same cold elongation, using a stress applied at temperature which was a constant proportion of the stress required to produce this elongation. THE purpose of this paper is to record a few field observations and accumulated office data concerning outcrops, relation of ore occurrences to intrusive and host rock, and mineral zoning. Reasons for some of the phenomena are not clear to the author so the facts are given with the hope that other investigators may be able to furnish the explanations. The Avalos unit of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., operates the Alicante, Bonanza, Providencia, Albarradon, San Eligio, Nazareno, Leona, Salaverna, and Santiago mines situated between Avalos railroad station and Concepcion del Oro on the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad in the State of Zacatecas, Mexico. Some of these mines are within Penoles property while others are on mining claims leased from the Compania Nazareno, y Catasillas, S. A., Mazapil Copper Co., and the American Smelting and Refining Co. The main office and camp are at Providencia, about 170 km southwest of Monterrey, N. L., so the silver-lead-zinc mines of the district are usually referred to as the Providencia mines. The Aranzazu, Catarroyo, and Cabrestante copper-gold. mines are situated a few kilometers to the southeast on the same mountain range near Concepcion del Oro, the name by which the camp is known. It is operated by the Mazapil Copper Co. The main theme in the following pages is a description of the silver-lead-zinc ore occurrences of the district. Rock Formations Sedimentary Rocks: Many competent geologists have contributed generously to an ample fund of information concerning the sedimentary columns of northern Mexico. Among them are Carlos Burckhardt, E. Böse, L. B. Kellum, .and R. W. Imlay. Carlos Burckhardt who covered a number of extensive areas in many parts of the Mexican Republic, devoted years to mapping the geology of the Caja, Zuloaga, and Santa Rosa mountain ranges around Mazapil, Concepcion del Oro, and San Pedro de Ocampo, Zacatecas. THE Eötvös torsion balance permits the measurement of certain second derivatives of the gravity-potential, which are known as the gradients of gravity and the curvature values for an, equipotential plane of gravity. These quantities are influenced on level ground by the configuration of the masses underneath. Hence, the torsion balance has gained great importance for the location of geological structures and thus indirectly for the discovery of oil and other mineral deposits. If the ground is not level, however, the measurements become more difficult, because the superficial mass-irregularities also produce more or less considerable disturbances. It is necessary, therefore, to determine the shape of the surrounding topography by leveling as well as by consulting topographic maps and to compute its influence upon the torsion balance. The correction thus determined is called, in general, the topographic correction; it is composed of two constituents, the terrain correction and the cartographic correction. The terrain correction would be that part of the topographic correction as derived from the direct leveling of the area surrounding the station, whereas the data for the computation of the cartographic correction are obtained from a topographic map, usually beginning with a radius of 100 meters, as under most circumstances it is difficult to level along a larger concentric circle about the station.

A description of the field apparatus has been published by D. G. Brubaker. Data from laboratory model studies of the in-line and broadside methods of operation are detailed. The conductor models include a single sheet conductor at several strike and dip angles and a schistose-type conductor. In addition, data on the effects of the strike length and of the depth of the conductor are presented for the broadside method of operation. All of the data show that the inclintion reverses direction over the top edge of dipping single sheet conductors. Differences between anomalies over conductors dipping between 90" and 30" are subtle,but flat-lying sheets can be readily distinguished from steeply dipping sheets. Schistose conductors are easily distinguished from single sheet conductors, and a procedure is given for determing the direction of schistosity. The depth of penetration under ideal conditions is 0.7 of the coil separation. In 1950, The New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) developed a lightweight apparatus for electromagnetic prospecting. A description of this apparatus has been published by D. G. Brubaker.1 It consists of a small, battery-powered vertical source coil and a direction-finding receiving coil. Source and receiver are kept a fixed distance apart and move as a unit along the survey lines. At each receiver station the inclination of the magnetic field created by the source is measured. Two methods of operation are used, in each of which measurements are taken with a constant source-to-receiver distance and with the plane of the source oriented to pass through the receiver station. In one procedure, called the in-line method, source and receiver travel in tandem along the same line. In the other procedure, called the broadside method, source and receiver move along adjacent lines, with the source-to-receiver direction oriented parallel to the assumed strike direction. The data recorded in either case are the inclinations, measured in degrees from the horizontal, of the magnetic field created by the source. These data are plotted at the receiver stations on a map. Scale-model studies of both methods of operation have been conducted in the laboratory and are reported in this paper. APPARATUS Small source and receiving coils wound with many turns of fine copper wire were used to produce and measure an alternating magnetic field in the same manner as the field apparatus. The model source coil was mounted in a vertical position and oriented so that the receiving coil was in the plane of the source. The receiving coil was mounted in a frame so it could be rotated to obtain the inclination measurements. The source coil was excited by a 100-kc signal generator. A tuned amplifier and a voltmeter were used to detect the null position of the receiving coil. The coils used in the field apparatus are usually spaced about 400 ft. The coils used in the model work were spaced from 4 in. to 4 ft apart. Thus the scale of the model work ranges between 1/1200 to 1/100 natural size. The model conductors were aluminum-coated building paper supported on wooden frames. The conductivity-thickness product was measured using a four-electrode system and was found to be about 300 ohms-'. CONDUCTIVITY CONSIDERATIONS The electromagnetic response from a thin sheet conductor is a function of the product of the conductivity of the sheet times the thickness of the sheet times the frequency of the alternating electromagnetic field times some linear dimension of the system such as the coil separation which indicates scale. The secondary electromagnetic field produced by the conductor increases in amplitude from zero at zero conductivity to a maximum value for infinite conductivity, while the phase of the secondary field with respect to the primary field shifts from 90" at zero conductivity to 0" at infinite conductivity. Several authors2-' have shown that most of both the increase in amplitude and the change in phase of the secondary field takes place over a three-decade range of the conductivity-thickness-frequency product. THE purpose of this paper is to state briefly the inspection requirements of the Bureau of Ordnance, the specifications governing the inspection, and the physical and chemical properties of the steel used in the construction of ordnance for our Navy. It would be of interest to evoke discussion on points in these specifications which do not tend to insure the production of the very best material for the purpose intended. In other words, what requirements of our specifications are useless and also in what manner are our specifications deficient? It might be well at the, start to answer the first criticism of this paper which will probably be made, and that is that the title does not agree with the subject matter. Considering metallographic work as covering only the macroscopic and microscopic examination of metals, this paper will have gone beyond the subject; but it is believed that a broader definition of metallography is that it is the study of the relation of the internal structure of metals and alloys to their composition and to their physical and- other properties. The internal structure of steel is dependent on its physical and its chemical properties. These physical properties are dependent on the chemical composition and the mechanical and thermal treatment of the steel. So it seems that this subtitle would not be entirely necessary and that the title "Metallography of Steel for Ordnance Purposes" would cover a study, not only of what we can learn of macroscopic and microscopic examination, but broadly of the whole subject of the specifications, the fulfillment of the requirements of which produce the structural conditions revealed by macroscopic and microscopic examination. .

A major difficulty in the design is the problem of transferring internal hydraulic pressure to the rock through a tunnel lining or membrane provided to maintain watertight conditions. The lining is necessary not only to prevent water loss, but to prevent the diffusion of water at high pressure through joints and fractures beyond the confines of the tunnel, an occurrence which could ultimately affect the stability of the rock mass through which the tunnel passes. Because of its toughness and ability to bridge localized areas of weakness, steel is used for a lining material whenever high internal pressures are involved. The steel lining is coupled to the surrounding rock mass through an annular ring of concrete backfill. It is paradoxical that the steel lining, needed primarily to assure water tightness, must of necessity be incorporated into the structure as a major pressure-resisting component, not to augment the bearing capacity of the concrete and rock, but to limit the strain for the safety and preservation of the steel lining itself. With the deformation modulus of the steel so much greater than that of the rock, the liner approaches its yield strength before the load capacity of the rock can be fully mobilized. A nonlinear dynamic model for a flotation cell is developed, using a number of simplifying assumptions, the most important of which is that of essentially complete liberation in the feed material. Using this model, a complete dynamic model for a flotation circuit is developed and calibrated against steady- state process data. The dynamic response of the circuit to disturbances in input feed rate and composition is simulated, as is the response of a linearized and simplified model on which control design might be more easily based. Preliminary results indicate the practicability of the modeling technique. However, difficulties in matching steady-state operating conditions in one process stream, and the apparent importance of recycle streams as indicators of process operation, indicate that inclusion of at least one species of middling particle in the model should be considered.

Some years ago, the writer described heat checks or thermal cracks that occur in die-casting dies.' The life of dies was considered in relation to. the casting temperature, the material used for the die and the heat to be absorbed by the die per unit volume of casting made. The mechanism of the action that results in thermal failure of dies was described. In the present paper the writer proposes to describe some additional observations in regard to heat checking, make one or two suggestions as to the method or methods for further attack of the problem, and give the results obtained on some work carried out along these lines. Importance of Heat Checking Heat checks in steel are the source of trouble in many industries besides that of die casting. Every shop where metals are subjected to hot working is searching for improvement and hoping for a cure. The development of a material of sufficient strength to be used as a die and yet devoid of the property of heat checking would be a godsend to many shops and many industries. The need for thorough study and research on the subject is evidenced by the wide variety of hot-working die steels on the market. It is peculiar, but true, that in practically every case the maker of the steel can give concrete evidence to prove his contention that his type of hot-working die steel is as good as or better than any other. A number of steel companies have several hot-working die steels from which choice can be made to fit a particular set of requirements. Possibly to expect one material to be universally the best hot-working die steel is unreasonable. In some hot-working operations, as in drop forging, the die must have great toughness to withstand the stresses developed; in other operations, as in hot piercing or punching, resistance to erosion at high temperatures, possibly defined as strength and hardness at elevated temperatures, is required. In still others, as in die casting, only sufficient hardness to resist scoring between moving surfaces is required, whereas the resistance to sudden changes in temperature must be at a maximum.

Occurrrences of South African uranium have been known qualitatively for over twenty years, but no account was taken of them because of their low grade. In 1945, known uranium deposits were few, but their grades were 20 to 100 times higher than South African ores. Viewed in this light, the exploitation of South Africa's uranium is revolutionary indeed. Development of various analytical procedures capable of dealing with the needs of the project accounted for one-half of the cost and included: a) simple and automatic radiometric analytical procedures, b) sampling procedures appropriate to prevent sample contamination, c) procedures for sample and record-storing to accommodate many thousands of analyses per month, d) chemical methods giving high accuracy analyses for high grade samples not at radioactive equilibrium, and e) development of rapid procedures having moderate accuracy for low grade samples i.e., mill tailings and barren liquors. This task is continuing today with major improvements coming from time to time.

THE rapid increase in reliability, the low cost f operation, the ready application of safety devices, and the growing availability of central-station power have made the question of installing a hoist of the electric type no longer debatable. Where adequate electric power is available, there are few cases where it would be advisable to install a steam or air hoist. The type of electrical equipment depends largely on the nature of the power supply, its capacity, and the form of the power contract under which power is purchased. In a large majority of cases, the available electric power is alternating current, three phase, 60 cycles. There is, however, considerable 25-cycle power in use; and in a few instances constant voltage direct current is the only power available for a small or an occasional medium-size hoist. Where a new hoist is to be installed, the designer of the mechanical parts can readily take care of the maximum stresses likely to be imposed by the' motor. Where the hoist is already installed and operated by steam or air and it is desired to substitute an electric motor for the engine, a careful check should be made to determine the advisability of using the old mechanical parts. In most cases it is better to install a complete new hoist than to attempt to use old mechanical parts. A steam engine has a definite maximum torque, which the hoist has been designed to withstand, while a motor may be able to deliver momentary torques beyond the strength of the mechanical parts of the hoist. The selection of the proper type of electrical equipment can only be made after complete information is obtained and certain calculations made to determine the capacities required. There are several methods used in making hoist calculations, but no matter what method is utilized a fair degree of familiarity with hoists and hoisting conditions is necessary before an intelligent analysis and proper selection can be made.
