Mica is a platy mineral occurring in a variety of complex hydrous aluminosilicate forms with differing chemical composition and physical properties. Principal minerals in the mica group include: Muscovite-potassium mica (colorless or pale green/ ruby) Phlogopite-magnesium mica (dark brown or amber) Biotite-magnesium-iron mica (black or dark green) Lepidolite-lithium mica (lilac) Selected properties are given in Table 1. Muscovite is most important commercially with phlogopite of lesser use. The laminated structure of mica enables it to be split into very thin films which are transparent and tough as well as having outstanding dielectric and insulating properties. Commercially, mica is used in a number of forms (Chowdbury, 1941; Rajgarhia, 1951; Skow, 1962). Sheet mica consists of flat sheets mined from naturally occurring books of mica, free from defects and capable of being punched or stamped into required shapes. Sheet mica is separately classified into blocks, films, or splittings according to thickness. Built-up mica, or micanite, is made by arranging overlapping splittings in layers , cemented with a binder and pressed together at high temperature. Reconstituted mica, or mica paper, is made by depositing fine flakes of high-quality scrap mica in a continuous film impregnated with binder. Scrap and flake mica are normally unsuitable in quality or size for making sheet mica. Originally the term scrap mica referred to the waste byproduct of mining and fabricating sheet mica, and distinct uses were developed for this material. Subsequently it became economically feasible to mine lower quality mica for these uses, and the term flake mica was introduced. Although the two terms are still used somewhat synonymously, it is considered better, at least in the United States, to use the term flake mica in referring to mica mined for uses other than as sheet mica; and to restrict the term scrap mica to mica mined for or with sheet mica, but which will not meet the specifications. Synthetic mica, such as fluorophlogopite, is produced by slow crystallization of a melted blend of pure raw materials. Mineralogy In the true sense the term mica does not relate to, a particular mineral, but to a group or family of minerals of similar chemical composition and to some extent similar physical properties. These minerals are predominantly potassium aluminum silicates with varying amounts of magnesium, iron, and lithium. The precise formulas and isomorphic relationships of the various group members have been studied, but general agreement has not been reached (Grimshaw, 1971; Hurlbut, 1952; Skow, 1962). The general formula describing the chemical composition of micas is [X2Y4-6Z8020(OH, F)4, where X is mainly K, Na, or Ca; Y is mainly Al, Mg, or Fe; Z is mainly Si or Al (Deer, et al., 1962).] These minerals have an internal structure of the layered lattice type where the silicon atoms are in the center of a tetrahedral grouping of oxygen atoms. The groups are linked together in a single plane by three oxygen atoms that lie within the common plane. Each of these oxygen atoms is shared by two tetrahedra. These linked tetrahedral groups, when continually extended, produce a hexagonal network within the plane. This internal structure of the mica has been used to explain the ex-

Phosphate rock is a natural rock containing one or more phosphate minerals usually calcium phosphate, of sufficient purity and quantity to permit its use, either directly or after beneficiation in the manufacture of commercial products.1 The principal minerals in phosphate rock have the apatite structure which may be represented by the type formula: Ca10(X2) (PO4)6 where X represents the hydroxyl group (OH), chlorine or fluorine, either singly or collectively. The calcium may be partly replaced by sodium, magnesium, and other positive ions such as manganese, strontium, lead, uranium, cerium, yttrium and other rare earths. The PO4 radical may be partly replaced by small quantities of UO4, AsO4, SiO4, CO3, SO4, or Vo4. A typical commercial rock is usually a calcium phosphate containing 3 to 4 pct fluorine, the major impurities being limonite or other iron oxides, clay, aluminum phosphates and silica as quartz sand. A little vanadium is present in most of the domestic rock deposits (except the Tennessee Brown Rock), according to Jacob, Hill, Marshall and Reynolds! A little uranium occurs in the Florida leached zone, as will be brought out later. The chemical analyses are reported as P205, or tricalcium phosphate Ca3(PO4)2, the latter often designated by the trade name BPL (bone phosphate of lime). Commercial analyses usually report iron and alumina as oxides, lime as CaO and silica or insoluble. Colony3 examined many samples of apatite, staffelite, dahlite and American phosphorites and concluded that all have identical X-ray diffraction patterns. The phosphates in the phosphate rock have very minute crystalline structures. The mineral apatite Ca3(F.Cl) (PO4) 3 is the principal primary source of the element phosphorus, and occurs widely distributed in igneous rocks but rarely in a minable mass. Only about 12 pct of the world production of phosphate rock comes from primary apatites; the remainder is derived from secondary phosphorites. These phosphorites have been formed by the alteration of sediments by solutions containing phosphoric acid. Such solutions have come from the weathering or leaching of igneous rock containing apatite, bone deposits of prehistoric animals, marine life or guano deposits. These phosphorites are mostly alterations of phosphatic limestones. The sedimentary phosphate deposits are of marine origin and may have been enriched by subsequent solution of the more soluble calcium carbonate by waters containing carbon dioxide, by physical concentration by wave action, and by redeposition of the dissolved phosphate ions. Uses of Phosphate Phosphorus is the spark of life and is the structure builder and one of the main elements of plant food (fertilizer). Without phosphorus, life cannot exist. A "complete" plant food[t] in addition to phosphorus compounds contains potash, which acts as a catalyst to convert nutrients to useful forms, nitrogen to supply the growth element and many minor elements. The cycle of supply of phosphorus is from the apatite to solution and soil, absorption of plant life, decay and return to the soil or by animal life feeding on the plants. In common with all other producing areas of the United States, Pennsylvania enjoyed increased activity and prosperity during 1937 (Table I). Prices of crude oil were better than for any year since 1930, and the Bradford average was $2.599, compared with an average price of $2.60 in 1930. Production and drilling activities were increased over 1936, although drilling for oil represented almost entirely a program of secondary development in both the water-flood areas and the air-gas repressuring areas. Bradford Oil Field The Bradford oil field continued to produce the major portion of Pennsylvania oil; however, no changes occurred in oil-production methods during 1937. Practically all of the production in the Bradford field is by water-flooding and the total number of oil and water wells completed within the area increased from 3205 in 1936 to 4112 in 1937; an increase of approximately one-third over 1936 completions. The percentage of water wells is approximately one-half of the total completions, although any specific five-spot development will have a proportion of 55 to 60 per cent water wells and 40 to 45 per cent oil wells. Offsetti~ig and boundary oil wells probably will result in a division or percentage of 50 per cent oil and 50 per cent water wells. The quoted figures for well completions include the entire Bradford field, approximately 12 per cent of which is in Cattaraugus County, New York. It is possible to make a segregation of production, but it is not possible to segregate well completions. Production in the Pennsylvania end of the Bradford field in 1937 totaled 15,076,000 bbl., or a daily average of 41,300 bbl. compared with a daily average of 37,000 hbl. in 1936.

Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines. BACKGROUND Until recent years most underground coal mines used direct current exclusively for all movable and for some stationary equipment. Exceptions were for permanent pumps, tipple, fan, and outside buildings where alternating current was normally employed. However, over 60 years ago there were mines with dual systems. Alternating current was used for cutting machines, drills, and pumps ; direct current for locomotives. There were no other machines as these were hand-loading mines. Later, during early mechanization in the 1920s, alternating current was also applied to loading machines at some mines. Use of dual electric systems then declined until fairly recently when

Any city dweller who has walked alone along a remote mine passageway has to be impressed by the eerie silence-the total absence of noise except for one's own breathing and scuffing of boots on the bottom. An underpound mine can have tremendous contrasts, from complete silence to the ear piercing clatter of percussion drills working in the mine roof. Noise in underground mining machines is both useful and detrimental. Without characteristic noises that are recognizable to miners, operators would have a more difficult job operating their machines. Noise serves as a warning of approaching machinery, and changes in noise give indication that breakdowns may occur. But excessive noise is a health hazard. In recognition of this fact, our congress included noise exposure as a part of the "Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969." As [Fig. 1] indicates, allowable noise exposure is established by specifying a time duration permitted at different noise levels. This is the well known "Walsh-Healey" criteria which govern noise exposure in many industries. In most industries noise exposure is not a constant value. Noise emitted from coal mining machinery varies widely, and therefore interpretation of compliance is not a simple matter. Time, environment, instrumentation and machine productivity, as well as the designed machine characteristics affect the results. It is the purpose of this paper to present the underground coal face machinery noise problem from a manufacturer's point of view. Manufacturers are very much aware of their responsibility to alleviate the noise problem. Not infrequently, orders are received from coal operators that a given new machine must comply with "The Coal Mine Health & Safety Act" noise regulations. Such a request is indicative of the misunderstanding which exists with machine users, while indicating their desire to comply with the law. Obviously, if all machinery could be designed and used at some arbitrary low noise level, it would be possible to simplify the regulations. However, there still remains the pervasive problem of existing machines. Extensive investigation to create practical retrofit kits for existing machines, to substantially reduce noise have been only marginally successful. Certain machine mechanisms are inherent noise makers. The only really good solution is to substitute a quieter mechanism. Such overall new designs have been undertaken, and several examples are mentioned later in this paper. Before describing machine noise problems, it is necessary to define noise values. Noise levels are measured in decibels. The designation "DBA" is decibels measured on the "A" scale, or one in which the frequency sensitivity of the instrumentation is about the same as the human ear. The numbers are often misinterpreted because it is a logarithmic, rather than an arithmetic scale. In comprehending the numbers, it should be remembered that any increase of 3 dB doubles the sound power. In practical terms this means that two noises of equal power at the same distance away increases a dB reading by three. HeRbeRT Haas,—(communication to the Secretary*).—Fig. I plainly shows that the comparison of the steam-turbine and Diesel-engine plants was made on a basis of 6,000 kw. continuous operating load. The tabulation of costs for an 8,000-kw. load is merely done to show the relation of increased output on the unit power costs. Both plants would sacrifice their reserve capacity, which is to insure continuous operation, if operated to generate 8,000 kw. continuously; unless Mr. Hawkins advocates the operation of one of the turbines at 33.33 per cent. overload, retaining the other as a standby, which, besides overtaxing the turbine, results in a great loss of efficiency. It would be well for Mr. Hawkins to qualify certain of his statements. Thus, under the caption "Diesel Engines, Selection of Units," he says that '(two of the largest Diesel-engine builders take the position that, in the present state of the art, they would not attempt to put out units over 1,000 kw.;" he should qualify it by saying that "two of the largest American Diesel-engine builders take the position that, in the present state of the art in the United States, they would not attempt to put out units over 1,000 kw." The reason that American manufacturers restrict themselves at present to units of that size is to be found not so much in a lack of experience in building large units as in a lack of a sufficient demand for them in the United States to justify the heavy capital outlay connected with the development of such engines. There are relatively few localities in the United States where fuel prices are as high as they are in the South-, west, and regions of high fuel prices are sparsely settled and have a very limited demand for power. Where low fuel prices obtain, steam turbines are active competitors of Diesel engines for large power plants, particularly when the station load factor is low. As most of the American manufacturers of Diesel engines work under license agreements with European manufacturers, which limit their market to the United States and its possessions and Canada, a further limitation is imposed upon them, leaving to European firms practically the entire world as a market. The greater number of power plants range in size from 300 to 1,000 hp.; the average size of the central station, on a basis of all central stations in the United States, not greatly exceeding 500 kw.; in these sizes it is hard for steam engines to compete with Diesel engines, unless fuol oil prices are excessively high, and coal prices very low, or the exhaust steam is used for heating purposes.

VERY little information is available in the literature concerning the solubility of magnesium in titanium. Aust and Pidgeon&apos; report the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.0025 pct at 650°C and 0.015 pct at 850°C. X-ray diffraction studies failed to detect any evidence of solid solubility. Based on the fact that the addition of titanium to magnesium increases the c/a ratio of magnesium, Busk&apos; suggested that the Mg-Ti system, like the Mg-Zr, is a peritectic. Eisenreich- eported the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.003 pct at 655°C and 0.064 pct at 760°C. Removal of hydrogen from the melt increased the solubility of titanium to 0.115 pct at 800°C. Eisenreich proposes a peritectic-type diagram for the high magnesium side of the system. Recent work&apos; with Ti-Mg diffusion couples indicate that the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium is extremely small and that there is limited solid solubility of magnesium in titanium. Experimental work on the Ti-Mg system is complicated by the fact that the boiling point of magnesium is considerably below the melting point of titanium. Consequently, the usual alloying methods are impractical. Alloying was accomplished in this investigation by sheath-rolling compressed compacts." The alloys were made from titanium sponge and high purity magnesium. Chemical analysis of the sponge showed 0.04 pct Mg, <0.005 pct Al, <0.001 pct Cu, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.022 pct Mn, <0.0025 pct Ni, 0.007 pct Si, <0.005 pct V, and <0.01 pct Zn. All heat treating was conducted in a protective atmosphere by encapsulating the specimens in fused silica ampules under a partial pressure of helium. Equilibrium was achieved by holding the specimens at temperature for periods of 24 to 120 hr. The alloys were hot rolled, cold rolled, and annealed prior to solution heat treatment. Fig. 1 shows the constitutional diagram obtained for the Ti-Mg system up to 1.5 pct Mg. Oxygen was known to be present in the alloys; therefore, it is necessary to consider the alloys as ternary rather than binary and the diagram should be viewed as a plot of a section through the Ti-Mg-0 system. Other investigatorso have shown that the addition of oxy- gen to titanium stabilizes the a phase. The data presented in Fig. 1 indicate that the addition of magnesium to titanium tends to stabilize the p phase. Armour Research Foundation7 has shown that the addition of magnesium to zirconium lowers the a transus and is classified as a p stabilizer in that system. Magnesium is soluble in solid titanium to the extent of at least 1.5 pct in both the a and /3 phases. No intermetallic compounds or magnesium-rich phases were observed either by light microscopy or X-ray diffraction. However, this does not negate the possibility that such phases exist at higher alloy concentrations.

This paper covers a brief discussion of pumping 38° to 41° gravity oil from Wilcox sand wells ranging in depths from 4000 to 4900 ft. in the Seminole field, Oklahoma. As recently as a year ago it was the general belief among Seminole operators that most wells in that district could not be successfully or economically pumped. Also the idea was prevalent at that time that the crookedness of the rotary holes would cause a large amount of mechanical trouble and the use of the air-gas lift would leave the wells depleted with sand conditions and fluid levels unfavorable for pumping. At that time it was predicted that wells would be abandoned when the economic flowing and swabbing period was reached. Contrary to these beliefs it has been demonstrated that wells can be profitably pumped to limits as low as 10 bbl. of oil per day where conditions are favorable. The Serllinole field, unusual in its rapid development, has served as an experimental laboratory for many oil field pumping devices with which this paper will not concern itself. Discussion will be confined to equipment and methods in general use throughout the field. The outstanding features of equipment and pumping operations covered in this paper may be summarized as follows: 1. Pumping equipment from the standpoint of prime movers, energy cost, power transmission equipment, derricks, counterbalances, beam hangers, tubing, sucker rods, pumps, etc. 2. Pumping problems peculiar to the Seminole field, including the proper time at which to change from air-gas lift flowing to pumping. Pumping Equipment There have been no basic changes in pumping equipment in the past 20 years with the exception of some refinements in design brought about by the demand for equipment suitable for pumping deep wells. MetALLOGRAPHIC investigations of composites of zinc alloys and aluminum have been made to study the effects of various thermal treatments on the zinc-alloy grain size and diffusion of zinc into the core material. The use of various alloys of zinc has necessitated the development of a universal etchant which will allow microscopic examination of the zinc grain size regardless of the composition.

SPODUMENE is a lithium-bearing pyroxene, and is an important source of lithium compounds. Because of its high alumina and lithia content. it might be a desirable constituent of glass batches. The use of spodumene in ceramics will undoubtedly increase, as it has been shown that a mixture of the proper proportions of this mineral with soda feldspar and potash feldspar has a much lower maturing temperature upon firing than has any one of the three components.1 The mineral spodumene seldom occurs as pure mineral, but ordinarily with feldspars, mica and quartz. All spodumene-bearing rocks tested contained these minerals as gangue. Small amounts of iron and manganese oxides also were present, usually as stains on the silicate grains. Mica associated with the spodumene carried a considerable amount of lithia. This was discovered in flotation tailings, which, although virtually free of spodumene grains when examined microscopically, showed 0.4 to 0.5 per cent Li20 on chemical analysis. The lithia content of micas picked from the North Carolina spodumene rock was variable. Some samples contained little lithia, others more than 3 per cent. In 1938, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston, [t] the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, undertook to study the beneficiation of North Carolina spodumene by froth flotation. The Bureau had previously published investigations on the beneficiation of spodumene.2, 3 The methods described in the second publication3 did not give good results with badly weathered spodumene rock, so that more thorough investigation of the subject was warranted. H. S. COE, St. Louis, MO. (written discussion *)-I feel much gratified that Mr. Mishler has confirmed those principles of slime settlement expressed by Mr. Clevenger and myself. I wish to state that, when we wrote the article referred to by. Mr. Mishler we had not seen his earlier article in which he gave a formula to be applied to the settling rate off feed pulp for determining thickener area required at El Tigre. It has been my experience that in cyanide work the settling area required is determined by the settling rate of the feed pulp for perhaps 20 per cent. of all of the ores to be encountered. For the other ores, the area required is greater than that indicated by the settling rate of the feed and corre-sponds to the settlement of a somewhat thicker free-settling pulp. Mr. Mishler, in his paper, has thoroughly outlined a set of tests for determining thickener capacity, which, if carefully carried out, should be entirely reliable, provided allowance is made for changes in the mill feed from time to time. Two features of his paper, I, believe; need comment. In speaking of the time required for slime to flocculate after being fed, Mr. Mishler quite properly states that the actual settling rate for the feed pulp can-not be that of completely flocculated pulp because of this time lost in flocculation. It seems to me, however, that this feature cannot be of very great importance, for the following reason: The upper zones of pulp in a thickener may be, and often are, as thin as the feed pulp. If, therefore, the feed be introduced at sufficient depth below the pulp surface to prevent agitation at the surface, there will be ample time for it to become flocculated before it becomes the surface layer, and it, will

The electrical properties of this area are characterized by a function p(z) (Fig. I), which shows the relationship between resistivity p of the soil and the depth z. For such general case the apparent resistivity p* will be computed, by earth-resistivity measurements carried out by any given configuration of electrodes. General solutions of this problem appear to be very important for interpretation of field results of resistivity measurements, concerning structural investigations. Such solutions have been given by many authors for the special case of a finite number of homogeneous layers (Fig. 2)lV4 as well as for the more general case of continuously ranging resistivities.5-8

ONE of the most important problems facing the petroleum industry is the profitable recovery of oil that is left underground by the ordinary methods of production. It is true that vast quantities of oil are being recovered from fields previously considered depleted by the pressure restoration method, the most widely applicable -and most successful means of obtaining greater recoveries that has thus far been, developed. But notwithstanding the progress that is being made in the field applica¬tion of this method there is urgent need for a better understanding of the fundamental principles that are involved. To meet this need the Petro¬leum Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., during the past two years has conducted a series of intensive laboratory and field investigations. The larger part of the work has been carried on in the laboratory to supply the much needed information upon fundamental principles, information which few if any of the oil companies are in a position to supply for themselves. In all of this work the Bureau is endeavoring to correlate the results of laboratory investigations with those in the field, using the results of one to guide or check the other. This paper is primarily a progress report, briefly outlining the Bureau&apos;s methods of study, the laboratory and equipment in use, the preliminary problems that had to be solved in order to attack the major problems at hand, the methods of attacking some of the major problems, and some of the results of the investigations to date.

BEFORE me is a colored mining-claim map of the productive portion of the Robinson Mining district-sometimes called the Ruth-Kimberly area-that lies a few miles west of Ely, Nevada. It covers an area of 20 sq mi and at the end of 1954 had produced just under 2,000,000 tons of copper and about 2,000,000 oz of gold as a by-product. The three principal colors on the map and the meaning of each are: Red -Property of the Nevada Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, formerly known as the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company. Yellow -Property of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation. Green --Consolidated Coppermines property under lease to Nevada Mines. The striking feature of the map is the crazy-quilt intermingling of the colors and the tendency of property lines to intersect ore bodies. For example, the westerly one-fourth of Nevada Mines&apos; Copper Flat pit, source of most of the ore,up to date, is in Coppermines property. Nearly half of Nevada Mines&apos; Veteran pit is on leased claims; and Nevada&apos;s new Deep Ruth shaft is on a right of way on ground originally owned by Coppermines.
