In a recent article, it was shown that in the blast furnaces in Germany that are lined with carbon blocks no cooling plates are used, and that shower cooling is employed on the hearth and bosh sections. While one of the authors was in Germany he was told that one furnace was being operated without even the shower cooling on the bosh section, though the hearth section was shower-cooled. In discussion of this interesting situation with a number of blast-furnace operators in this country, it was made clearly and promptly evident that shower cooling was very unpopular, probably because of its messiness and its ineffectiveness. Both of the causes for the dislike of shower coolings are reasonable ones. Shower cooling can be and frequently is messy, but the present cooling of blast furnaces leaves much to be desired on that score. Shower cooling is ineffective as compared with plate cooling, so far as its usefulness in keeping the bricks cool enough not to melt or fall to pieces is concerned. However, the introduction of carbon linings changes the situation. No one is concerned with keeping a carbon lining cool, for no temperature in the blast furnace has any effect on carbon, which is just as stable at 3000°F. as it is at 70°F. The only concern is for the shell—to keep it cool enough for safety and comfort— and for that shower cooling is sufficient. Of course, with only the shell to cool, instead of the shell plus all the refractory material, much less water would be required, and the necessity for constant attention to the flow would be lessened, as the hundreds of inlets and outlets would be eliminated. Probably half of the water used in cooling a blast furnace is used for cooling the shaft and tuyeres and the remainder for the bosh and hearth sections. However, in view of the dislike of shower cooling in the United States, and particularly because at least one German blast furnace is operated with no cooling of the bosh section, thought was given to the possibility that a carbon-lined blast furnace might be operated without any cooling of the entire carbon-lined portion. For that reason a series of experiments was performed to determine what might be the temperature of the shell of a blast furnace protected by a carbon lining and operated under varying conditions up to a maximum inside temperature of 3000°F. Experimental Procedure A schematic diagram of the experimental setup is shown in Fig. I and a photograph of the entire assembly in Fig. 2. In a previous paper1 in which one of the authors collaborated, it was postulated that All dissolved reagents which, in flotation pulps, either by action on the to-be-floated or on the not-to-be-floated particles affect their floatability, junction by reason of chemical reactions of well recognized types between the reagent and the particle affected. This generalization, apparently, like many pioneer structures, had for certain observers a flimsy appearance, and these, judging its stability rather by the number than by the character of its foundation posts, have attempted variously to overthrow it, either by the frontal attack of general denial, or by the flanking movement involved in assuming that those cases in which the facts were unknown or unproved were, therefore, discordant. But as time has passed and further evidence on the question has accumulated, it has become apparent that the results of verifiable experiments add stone by stone to the substructure of the hypothesis, and that the super-tructure has lost nothing in weathering. The present paper constitutes an examination of the opposing positions in the light of the more recent evidence developed. It will clarify the discussion if, at this point, we state more fully the implications of the disputed hypothesis. In the first place, it is explicitly limited to reagents that are dissolved in the water of the flotation pulp. Next, it refers only to such of these dissolved reagents as act on the solid particles in the pulp to affect their floatability. This includes the collectors, activators, and certain depressors and gangue-control reagrnts, but not the pure frothers, and not, necessarily, conditioners whose function seems to be merely that of pH control, although in certain cases it has been demonstrated that such control has the effect of regulating the primary reaction of the collector, depressor, or the like. Finally, there is no limitation as to the nature of the chemical reaction postulated.

Zinc concentrates assaying approximately 54% zinc and 30% sulfur are roasted in a suspension type roaster to yield a zinc oxide calcine assaying about 65% zinc and 0.40% sulfur. This calcine is the feed material to the sulfuric acid leaching section of an Electrolytic Zinc Plant. The SO2 gases resulting from the elimination of sulfur from the concentrates are passed through a waste heat boiler for the generation of high pressure steam, cleaned by a baghouse, and delivered to the humidifying tower of a sulfuric acid plant system. The gases are then treated in a mist precipitator for final fume removal and then converted to sulfur trioxide in a three pass contact system using vanadium pentoxide catalyst for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. Waste heat steam is used to power the steam turbine which drives the acid plant blower.

The present case history deals with the examination of an almost forgotten nickel prospect, near Winesap, Chelan County, Washington. Although the final results yielded no ore body of commercial importance, the integration of surface and underground exploration, geophysical survey and diamond drilling endow the story with interest. The program is significant because it is illustrative of how the most disappointing expenditures in mining exploration, the "not-finding" costs, could have been reduced had geophysical methods been applied at an appropriate stage in the prospecting work. The Chelan nickel deposit was discovered about 1900, on a sage-brush-covered hillside with a southerly slope, adjacent to Winesap Canyon; the paved highway now extending from Wenatchee northward, up the Columbia River and into Okanogan Valley, is only a mile away. After the deposit was found, three short prospect tunnels were driven into it, and the prospect then remained dormant for 40 years. No. x tunnel was 80 ft. long, running north into the hillside. For the first 35 ft. this adit exposed a typical, iron-stained gossan with streaks and stains of malachite, and small seams of water-soluble nickel sulphate. Beyond this, it encountered a relatively fresh peridotite, well mineralized with blebs of pentlandite. Systematic sampling yielded an average assay of 1.5 per cent nickel and 0.3 per cent copper. Down the hillside to the south and 35 ft. lower in elevation, No. 2 tunnel was driven under No. I and in the same direction, traversing 50 ft. of gneiss before it reached the peridotite. At this point the latter formation showed only scattered blebs of sulphides, not of commercial grade. To the west, on the same contour line as No. I tunnel, and 800 ft. around the hillside from it, No. 3 tunnel was driven 50 ft. into the hill to explore a strong gossan outcrop that assayed 0.5 per cent nickel (Fig. I). From the geological exposures on the hillside and in the tunnels, it appears that the main mass of the hill is formed of an ancient and altered gneiss complex. Into this, a sill-like injection of amphibolite (altered peridotite) was intruded, which, at least in some places, contains commercial quantities of nickel sulphide. Its structure is obscure, but it appears to dip into the hill at an angle of about 15°. In the vicinity of No. 3 tunnel a large dike of quartz diorite cuts the peridotite or amphibolite; about 140 ft. north of the portal of the tunnel, a dike of andesite 00 ft. wide cuts boldly up the hillside to break the continuity of the peridotite in that direction. The geological evidence available was not adequate to decide whether the peridotite forms a continuous sill, or occurs as isolated bodies in the gneiss. Nitrogen, and its compounds, unique among the materials described in this volume, is absolutely essential to the existence of the human race. Almost all minerals are important and the absence of any one of them would be sorely felt; but nitrogen is an integral part of the cycle of life itself. Man cannot live without nitrogen which, as an inert gas, composes the major part of the air he breathes; as compounds, nourishes the vegetation which he eats; and, as protein, forms a part of his very flesh and blood. Nature originally provided man with a vast reserve of usable nitrogen compounds in the form of fertile soil. She constantly replenishes the supply by "fixing" nitrogen in the air at the estimated rate of 400,000,000 tons per year (an insignificant 6 lb per acre) during electrical storms. She has also placed certain microorganisms in the soil which are able to "fix" nitrogen and convert it into forms which plants can use. Legumes like cow peas, soy beans, clover, and alfalfa have extraordinary roots which serve as stimulating hosts to these bacteria which, in turn, nourish the plant. By plowing in all or part of such crops, their above-average nitrogen content can be returned to the soil for other more useful crops. The mechanism for this recycle is supplied by "denitrifying" bacteria which attack the dead plant tissue and liberate nitrogen and ammonia. However, since one crop of grain, sugar beets, potatoes, tomatoes, etc., takes out a major portion of the nitrogen which a plowed-in legume crop can supply, this method of fertilization is obviously inadequate. Drastic intervention by man has become necessary to support the ever-growing population of the world.9,15,20 Old civilizations with a high population density, such as the Chinese, were able to exist for centuries by carefully tilling the soil, rotating crops, and returning to the soil all the nitrogen in vegetable wastes plus human and animal excreta. But the lack of a means for augmenting their supply of nitrogen placed a ceiling on further development and kept the mass of the population in a chronic state of undernourishment, frequently punctuated by famine. Nitrogen plays another important role in the life of mankind. In the form of explosives, nitrogen helps to wrest from the earth many materials needed for our material well-being. Also, in the form of explosives and propellants, nitrogen increased the destructiveness of wars to a point only exceeded by the fantastic power of atomic energy. Man's first really effective efforts to improve his position with respect to nitrogen began in the 18th Century with the mining of sodium nitrate. By the late 1880's this had become a big industry serving a large part of the world. In the late 1890's nitrogen, in the form of ammonia, was being recovered from coke-oven operations. In 1900 nitrogen, in the form of nitric oxide, was being obtained from the air by an electric-arc process. About 1904 another "fixation" process based on the reaction of nitrogen with calcium carbide to form cyanamide was commercialized. By 1913 the Haber-Bosch process of "fixing" atmospheric nitrogen by reacting it with hydrogen to produce synthetic ammonia was successfully applied on a large scale, first in Germany and then throughout the industrial areas of the world.9 All the above methods of obtaining nitrogen compounds are still in use and, between them, they assure mankind of adequate supplies for all time. While this fortunate situation is not unique amongst industrial raw materials, all too few of man's needs are so well in hand.

The year 1931 has been one of unusual interest in Gulf Coast petroleum development, not so much because of the number of new prospects discovered, for apparently none of any present distinction have been found, but because of the discovery of so many new oil fields and the proving of so many old prospects. During the year 10 new oil fields have been found on the Coast; five in Louisiana and five in Texas. Two suspected salt domes were proven by the drill. Production dropped from a daily average of 192,000 to 162,670 bbl., or an average of 58 bbl. for each producing well, and active operations from 189 to 119. During 1931 the Coast produced approximately 48,600,000 bbl., or 44 per cent less than in 1930, when 86,500,000 bbl. were produced. The daily return at the beginning of the year was $192,000 and at the end only $126,780, the price having dropped from $1 for A grade and a range of $0.75 to $1.22 for B grade to a price range of 70 to 86c, or an average of 78c $ per barrel at the end of 1931. The average Coastal well produced 17,400 bbl. of oil during 1931. During the year development in the old fields has continued active at Barber's Hill only, although some work is in progress at Humble, Pierce Junction, Refugio and Pettus. Clear Lake is active but the large ownerships will prevent the "boom" type of field. Production is being held fairly steady at Barber's Hill and Pierce Junction, but has declined rapidly during the year at Refugio, Humble, and to a lesser degree at Pettus. The 6000-ft. production at Barber's Hill has shown a decided drop during the year and has not measured up to expectations.

A discussion of laboratory procedures used to determine pellet quality and to simulate handling and firing conditions. Strength-temperature relationships in pelletizing; effect of chemical additives on agglomeration; and crushing, abrasion, and impact resistance of the pelletized products are discussed with respect to five different iron ore concentrates. IN most routine experimental work on products and processes, method:; of operation and product evaluation are established from accurately controlled laboratory tests. With particular emphasis on the pelletization of fine iron ore concentrates, standardized procedures of laboratory production and product testing have been established at Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. Research Laboratory at Ishpeming, Mich. A program of this nature was used for investigating the agglomeration characteristics of various iron ore concentrates. The factors which control the process were studied and subsequently controlled for these investigations. Pelletizing as applied to iron ore agglomeration involves the preparation of spheroidal masses from a fine moist concentrate, followed by high-tempera-ture firing to produce a final product. The preparation of moist spherorids is generally designated as balling. This produces the so-called green pellets or balls. After, these have been fired they are called pellets. Balling is accomplished by rolling moist concentrates in a revolving drum until small spheroids form by a snow-balling action. These balls are then heated in a shaft furnace, or a modification of this device, to a temperature high enough to cause agglomeration within the individual balls while they descend countercurrent to hot oxidizing gases. By this process the lour strength balls are converted through various chemical and physical-chemical processes into hard pellets. With correct balling and firing, the pellets are strong, resist abrasive action and handling treatments, and provide a suitable blast furnace and open hearth feed. In 1950 Tigerschiold and Ilmoni developed a working hypothesis to explain the formation and stability of green pellets.' Their work was presented on the basis of geologists' discoveries concerning the soil-water system and C. V. Firth's early postulates of green pellet formation.' Fundamental reactions oc-curing within fired pellets have been described by Cooke and Ban, who showed the microstructure changes caused by different firing temperatures." All these investigators have provided scientific clarifications of agglomeration by the pelletizing process and have opened avenues for greater development. Mineral grain growth and ceramic bond formation are the two basic phenomena imparting coherency to particles within a fired pellet of iron ore. Each of these is established by the transfer of thermal energy to the mineral particles. Grain growth mechanisms are chiefly physical reactions wherein smaller particles consolidate into larger ones, with resulting decrease in surface energy conforming with the second law of thermodynamics. Ceramic bond formation is a chemical reaction usually between basic and acid metallic oxides of the gangue and ore minerals. CaO, MgO, A1203, and FeO of Fe3O4, react in varying proportions with SiO, or Fe2O3, to form a great series of compounds or amorphous solid solutions. These product bond iron mineral particles together by a bridging action or by direct reaction with the surfaces of the particles. The result of the grain growth-ceramic bond formations is a consolidated, coherent compact of gangue and iron minerals formerly held together by much weaker bonds of interstitial water and forces common to dry, unconsolidated particles.4 With respect to iron ore agglomeration, these high temperature bonding reactions have been described by Schwartz, who referred to the bonds in sinters," and by Cooke and Ban, who referred to the bonds in fired pellets." Harry HaRkness Stoek, whose sudden death on March 1,1923, was a great shock to his friends in all park of the country, was a man of remarkable personal characteristics and mental ability. Through an acquaintance with him of nearly 35 years, during 12 yeam of which I was intimately associated with him both in business and socially, I learned to appreciate his many high qualities, his strict adherence to high professional and social ideals, and his lovable traits of character. In this appreciation I was joined by every one who was thrown in close personal contact with him. He was a conscientious student, not given to hasty judgments, but when he formed an opinion he was positive in upholding it. At the same time, he was most courteous and kindly in combatting that which he believed was erroneous. In fact, I never knew a person of his attainments more modest, forceful and kindly, or one who had a keener sense of clean humor. In his private life,he was a devoted husband and father, a consistent communicant and worker in the Episcopal Church, and was charitable in all things. In fact, his whole life was marked by helpfulness to others and a determined and successful effort to "make the world better by his having lived in it." Doctor Stoek was born in Washington, D. C., Jan. 16, 1866. His early education was obtained in the public schools of that city and he graduated from the Central High School in the first class to graduate from a high school in Washington. He entered Lehigh University in 1883, graduated in 1887 with the degree of Bachelor of Science, and after a year of post-graduate study in mining and metallurgy he received the degree of Engineer of Mines. During the summer vacation in 1885, he served as an assistant in the Department of Mineralogy in the National Museum at Washington, and during the summer of 1887 acted as U. S. Government inspector of dredging on the Tharnes River, Connecticut. From June, 1888, to January, 1900, he was assistant engineer for the Susquehanna Coal Co., at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. From January, 1890, to June, 1893, he was Instructor in Mining, Metallurgy and Geology at Lehigh University, and had charge of all courses in mining and metdlurgical design, and the visits of students to mines and metallurgical

The control of mud properties affords two practical means of tnitigating pipe sticking caused by differential pressure: (I) teducing weight and, therefore, differential pressure; and (2) reducing the friction berween the pipe and mud cake. This paper describes investigation of the second of these—the friction between the pipe and the mud cake. Friction between a steel plate and a mud cake, held in contact by a differential pressure, was measured in the laboratory while maintaining a constant area of contact. Experiments were performed to determine how this friction varied with changes in mud composition and with changes in experimental conditions such as the differential pressure, time of contact of plate and mud cake, and filter-cake thickness. It was found that the apparent coefficient of friction, or the "sticking" coeficient, was not a constant; instead, it increased with increased time of contact between plate and mud cake, and with increased barite content of the Mud. The sticking coeficient varied from about 0.05 to 0.2 afer 20 , and eventually reached values of 0.1 to 0.3 after two Hours. Quehracho or ferrochrome lignosulfonate reduced the sticking coefficient at short .set times but did not reduce the maximum value. Carboxy-~t~etlz~lcellulose had no effect on the sticking coeficient. Emulsification of oil in the mud reduced the sticking coefficient. Some oils reduced the sticking coefficient to about one-third of its Value in the oil- free base mud, while other oils reduced it only slightly. Addition of certain surfactants with the oils further reduced the sticking coefficient. Spotting a clean fluid over the stuck plate caused a reduction in sticking coefficient only if the differential presslrrr was reduced, either temporarily or- permanently. INTRODUCTION Often during drilling operations the drill string becomes stuck and cannot be raised, lowered, or rotated. This condition can be brought about by a number of causes, such as sloughing of the hole wall, settling of large particles carried by the mud, accumulation of mud filter cake during long stoppage of circulation and, finally, sticking by pressure of the mud column holding the pipe against the filter cake on the hole wall. This paper is concerned with the last-mentioned phenomenon. Helmick 2nd Longley' in 1957 suggested that a pressure differential from the wellbore to a permeable formation covered with mud cake could hold the drill pipe against the borehole wall with great force. This situation occurs when a portion of the drill string rests against the wall of the borehole, imbedding itself in the filter cake. The area of the drill pipe in contact with filter cake is then sealed from the full hydrostatic pressure of the mud column. The pressure difference between the mud-column pressure and the formation pressure acts on the area of drill pipe in contact with the filter cake to hold the drill pipe against the wall of the borehole. Helmick and Longley also presented laboratory cxperiments which showed that the force required to move steel across a mud cake increased with increasing differential pressure and with the time the stcel and mud cake had been In cuntact. Their data indicated that replacing the bulk mud with oil reduced the force required for movement. Field evidence was rcported that spotting oil over the stuck interval sometimes freed the pipe. Outmans- in 1958 presented a theoretical paper which described the sticking mechanism and explained the increase of sticking force with time with equations derived from consolidation theory. Since publication of these papers, there has been interest in the differential pressure sticking of drill strings, and several mud additives to reduce sticking or special equipment to free stuck pipe have been proposed."" Haden and Welch" have recently reported laboratory evidence showing that the composition of the filter cake influences the force necessary to move steel on the filter cake. There seems no doubt that differential pressure sticking is a real phenomenon and that its severity depends on the magnitude of the pressure differential across the mud cake, the area of contact and the friction between pipe and mud cake. The mud weight required to control a well is determined by the highest formation pressure in the well: hence, the magnitude of the differential pressure opposite normal or subnormal pressure formations cannot bc reduced. The area of contact may be minimized in several ways (control of filter-cake thickness, use of stabilizers and spirally grooved drill collars), but there arc practical limitations which prevent reduction of contact area from becoming a complete solution of the problem. However. the mud composition might bc altered to reduce the friction between pipe and mud cake. This paper presents quantitative measurements of the friction between steel and mud filter cake and shows how the friction varies with mud composition for given experimental conditions.

In situ leaching of uranium by aqueous ammonium carbonate containing oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as oxidant results in the partial dissolution of sulfides. While some of the sulfide sulfur is oxidized to sulfate, a considerable portion is oxidized only to thiosulfate and polythionates. Polythionates poison the ion exchange resin used to extract uranium. At the Palangana operation in south Texas, the trithionate ion (S3062-) was found by infrared spectrometry to be the major resin poison. Treatment of ion exchange feed solutions with hydrogen peroxide only resulted in partial conversion of reduced sulfur species to sulfate. Trithionate conversion was particularly slow. Poisoning of the resin also occurred from the ammonium chloride eluant, which built up trithionate because of recycling. This was essentially eliminated by chlorinating the eluant before yellow cake precipitation.

A SHORT and accurate method for the estimation of manganese in iron and steel is of great advantage to Bessemer works, and I think it may be of interest to some of the members of the Institute to give in detail the process in use in the laboratory of the Edgar Thomson steel works. The process is based on the reaction first described by Beilstein and Jawein.* The steel, spiegel, or iron is dissolved in strong nitric acid, sp. gr. 1.½. Evaporation to dryness is not necessary, unless the amount of silicon is large, as in the case of certain pig irons. Then, as a clogging of the filter in the subsequent filtration is apt to follow, dissolve first in a dish in hydochloric acid, quickly evaporate to dryness, redissolve in the strong nitric acid, boil, and while boiling throw in crystals of chlorate of potash from time to time. Violent action ensues, yellow fumes are given off, and binoxide of manganese is precipitated, since it is insoluble in strong

An experimental method is described to compare strain data for rock and rock bolts when exposed to shock waves released by blastings. Static and dynamic strains were measured. Bolt gage response indicated a static decay of the bolt anchorage coupled with a reaction due to blasting vibrations. A distinct loss of bolt tension was indicated during vibrations and this was accompanied by a smaller but steady loss of tension due to static loading. The strain losses were found to relate to the shock source distance and the vibrational amplitude in the rock and bolts. Millions of roof bolts are used each year to stabilize mine openings and prevent their failure. Frequently, bolts become loose and lose their effectiveness as reinforcement to the mine structure. Many attempts have been made to determine the cause of loosening, including observation of the bolt tension or bolt torque through the use of torque wrenches, compression pads, and load cells. Pull tests have been used extensively to determine anchorage characteristics.102 These investigations have shown that even when bolts are loaded below the nominal anchorage capacity of the rock under 'static' conditions they exhibit a decay of load through adjustments and slippage at the bolt anchor. Since bolts are quite often found with the plate hanging loose from the rock surface, this condition suggests that some additional mechanism may have played a part in loosening the anchorage. Vibration from blasting or shock loading have been suggested as one cause in this type of anchorage deterioration. This paper gives the results of an investigation carried on at the University of Missouri at Rolla to determine the influence of shock waves on rock-bolt anchorage stability. ROCK BOLT ANCHORAGE UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS In this report dynamic loading conditions are defined as conditions under which rock and bolts are exposed to vibrations occurring as a consequence of blasting, machine vibrations, earthquakes, rock bursts, etc. Whatever the location of the shock source, the waves created suffer extensive alterations along their travel paths, depending upon the vibrational properties and geometric parameters of the transmitting media. Together with reflection, refraction and diffraction at material boundaries, waves suffer changes in their nature to form tensile, compressive and shear waves. They become polarized, retracted, accelerated, dispersed, so that the waves incident at a point in the material can be the result of either one or a combination of this wide range of processes. A certain fraction of the wave energy will be lost due to friction, deformation, and material failure at the anchor-rock contact. Thus, the physical nature of wave propagation is such that it inhibits an exact analytical solution. For this reason this investigation should be considered qualitative rather than quantitative even though numerical data have been used as a base. CONCEPT OF THE INVESTIGATION Experiments were designed to find, from a series of rock bolts installed in natural mine rock, whether or not, and to what extent, bolt tensions would be influenced when bolts were exposed repeatedly to shock waves such as those produced by blasting. Electronic instrumentation available in the rock mechanics laboratory of the University of Missouri at Rolla was used to observe wave development in the rock and vibrational reactions in the bolts. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fig. 1 illustrates schematically the experimental equipment. Electric resistance wire strain gages were used as sensors for the strain response of the rock and the bolts. Bolts were 5 ft long and 5/8 in. in diam, equipped with two-leaf type expansion shells for 1 3/8 in. boreholes. The bolt gages were mounted by use of Du Pont Household Cement, covered with an epoxy insulation and then enclosed in a copper foil for electronic shielding. For details of placement and the wiring diagram see Fig. 2 and 3. The output of both the rock gages and the bolt gages was fed into cathode ray oscilloscopes from which the vibrational traces could be photographed. A static strain indicator was also used to read the output of all gages.

Discussion of the paper of D. Foster Hewett, Bulletin To. 27, March, 1909, pp. 291 to 310. JAMES F. KEMP, New York, N. Y.:-Mr. Hewett's paper is one of exceptional interest, because it not only adds an important contribution regarding one of the rarer, valuable elements, but also because it introduces compounds hitherto unknown and in associations no less novel. While we have occasionally dis¬covered and recorded asphaltite in metalliferous deposits, for example in the Joplin and Granby districts, we have not seen a metallic ore in a deposit essentially asphaltite. The source and method of introduction afford a subject well worth serious reflection. Vanadium was first discovered and recognized as a distinct element in the slags obtained in smelting the titaniferous magnetites at Taberg, Sweden. For a long time, therefore, we looked upon the titaniferous magnetites as its hone. Analyses proved, years ago, that it was present in the ores of this type in New Jersey and in the Adirondacks. It was quite rarely determined, but when looked for it was, I think, invariably found, although the Amount seldom exceeded 0.5 per cent. of V,05., In just what combination it exists in the titaniferous ores is uncertain. One might imagine V2O3 replacing some of the Fe2O3 of magnetite; or, since in the lead series vanadates and phosphates are closely akin, one might wonder if a lime-vanadate could take the place of apatite. Yet no lime-vanadate has been found in nature, and apatite itself is usually rare in the titaniferous ores. When percentage-curves are plotted for a series of analyses of the ores, the line of vanadic oxide shows a curious sympathetic behavior with the line of chromic oxide;' but the data are somewhat limited, and no compound has sug¬gested itself which throws light on the matter. Low-grade manganiferous iron ores of Minnesota's Cuyuna Range, in general, do not respond to conventional mineral dressing techniques because of their fine-grained texture. Reducing these ores to magnetite with subsequent magnetic separation and flotation have not given satisfactory results because, in many instances, concentrate grade and manganese recovery are low. Metallization of iron and concurrent reduction of higher manganese oxides to MnO, as in the R-N process, followed by recovery of iron by magnetic separation and manganese by leaching, seems to be a technically feasible process. High-temperature x-ray diffraction studies show that solid-state reactions between iron and manganese, with the formation of intermediate iron-manganese oxides, occur during reduction and affect recovery of both iron and manganese from the final product. Solid state reactions also occur between FeO, MnO, and SiO, at temperatures as low as 900°C. The kinetics of these reactions are such that they become an important factor in the treatment of ores by the R-N process. These investigations suggest a temperature and gas composition cycle that would maximize both iron and manganese recovery. During the past ten years, iron ore shipments from the Cuyuna Range of Minnesota have decreased sharp1y. Because of adverse grade, structure, and cost, many Cuyuna ores are no longer competitive with high-grade foreign ores and domestic pellets. The low-grade manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, in general, do not respond to conventional mineral dressing techniques because of their fine-grained texture. Reducing these ores to magnetite for subsequent magnetic separation and flotation has not given satisfactory results because concentrate grade and manganese recovery are often low. However, a technically feasible process appears to be metallization of the iron and concurrent reduction of manganese oxides to MnO with recovery of metallic iron by magnetic separation and extraction of manganese from the tailings by leaching. In 1962 the R-N Corp., with a grant from the Area Redevelopment Administration, conducted an amenability study of the metallization of manganiferous iron ore from the Cuyuna Range. The results of this preliminary investigation were sufficient to interest the Economic Development Administration in sponsoring further studies of the process with emphasis on secondary recovery of manganese from the nonmagnetic tailings. Inasmuch as the metallization process has considerable influence on the final form of the manganese - its texture and distribution between the magnetic concentrate and nonmagnetic tailings-the investigation included a study of metallization of the ore as well. Therefore, the investigation conducted at the Mines Experiment Station covered three interrelated phases: (1) laboratory R-N roasting studies and magnetic separation tests, (2) laboratory chemical extraction experiments of the nonmagnetic tailings, and (3) a mineralogical study of the crude ores and their various roast products. High-temperature x-ray diffraction investigation of the Fe-Mn-Si0,-0, system is the main topic of this paper and an extension of the mineralogical work. GENERAL GEOLOGY The Cuyuna Range is known for its complicated geologic structure, complex orebodies, and generally indifferent response to attempts at conventional beneficiation. Several geologists have made intensive studies of the Cuyuna Range, including Leithl (1907), ~darns' (1910), Zapffe3 (1925), Grout and Wolff4 (1955), and schmidt5 (1963), whose study was the most comprehensive of all. The Range is covered with glacial deposits - till, out-wash, and lake sediments -up to 250 ft thick. Bedrock stratigraphic units of the Cuyuna Range consist of three tightly folded Precambrian sedimentary formations. The lower unit is the Mahnomen formation, composed of 2000 or more feet of argillite, slate, siltstone, and quartzite. The middle unit is the Trommald formation, which varies from 45 to 500 ft in thickness and comprises the major iron-bearing formation. The upper unit is the Rabbit Lake formation, consisting of over 2000 it of argillite, slate, and interbedded lenses of lean iron formation. All papers to be presented at this meeting must be published in the September Bulletin or previously. Manuscripts must, therefore, be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute not later than July 1. In case manuscripts are given by authors to members of technical committees, or others, they must be in the hands of such persons sufficiently in advance so that they may be actually in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute by the date mentioned. In the past, the Secretary has received urgent requests for special consideration regarding manuscripts that come in after the closing date. In view of the obvious unfairness of this, the Committee on Papers and Publications has instructed the Secretary not to accept for presentation at the Arizona Meeting any papers received later than July 1, 1916.

IN discussing the problem of abnormal magnetic polarization, C. A. Heiland1? emphasized the unfortunate fact that our knowledge of the geological and physical conditions relating to such occurrences is very limited and that a more detailed insight into their physical causes would be extremely valuable for interpreting measured anomalies. He also pointed out that to arrive at quantitative physical formulas that would express the conditions that cause abnormal polarization many more occurrences of the kind would have to be recorded. The first part of this paper is a contribution to such descriptions.
