This paper presents a combined analytical and experimental study of chisel penetration vs time during chisel impact on rock, a problem of fundamental importance in improving the performance of roller-cone bits or percussion drilling toots. For a given force-time relationship between chisel and rock, the problem of determining the penetration (displacement) vs time of the chisel is formidable. This is so because the rock is a nonlinear system with distributed mass and distributed damping (friction, dissipation of energy due to rupture, etc.). Since the literature does not contain adaptable solutions, the rock behavior to impact was simulated approximately by an "equivalent" lumped system, that is, an "equivalent" mass, spring, dashpot system. With this assumption, an analytical solution was found for chisel penetration vs time due to a sinusoidal load between chisel and rock. From this solution were found curves, in terms of dimension-less variables, for the maximum depth of penetration vs the frequency of the sinusoidal loading and for the energy transfer vs frequency. The results of this analysis were used to predict the penetration rate of rotary rock bits us rotary speed. The curve indicated that an optimum speed exists. To verify this analysis, an experimental apparatus was constructed and used to apply a sinusoidal pulse to a chisel penetrating a rock specimen under atmospheric conditions. Strain gauges were mounted on the chisel shank and a velocity transducer was mounted between the chisel and the rock surface. The velocity was integrated electrically and picked up simultaneously with the strain gauge signal on an oscilloscope. Permanent records were made photographically to provide simultaneous records of force us time and penetration us time. In comparing the experimental results for limestone and dolomite with the theoretical results, good agreement was found in the frequency range of the experiments. Unfortunately, the inertia effect (peak penetration) indicated by the theory occurs at a frequency much higher than could be obtained experimentally with the apparatus constructed. A "rate-of-loading" effect is indicated theoretically, but has not yet been verified experimentally. INTRODUCTION The process of drilling with percussion tools or rotary rock bits is basically related to the transient response of rock to surface impact. Each time a bit tooth contacts the rock, high stresses are developed which result in penetration and rock removal. As the tooth moves on, stresses are relieved and a new cycle begins as the next tooth contacts the rock. Thus the drilling process, which consists of an endless succession of these cycles, can be studied in terms of a single cycle. It is apparent, therefore, that the study of single-chisel impact on rock is fundamentally important in improving the performance of roller-cone and percussive-type drills. Previous studies in this area have been conducted by Simon1 and Hartman2 by means of drop tests. In these tests a chisel was attached to a weight and allowed to fall, due to the force of gravity, so that the chisel was driven into a rock specimen upon impact. Strain gauges were attached to the chisel shank and the resulting force-vs-time curves were recorded photographically from an oscilloscope screen. The depth of penetration and crater dimensions were also measured. These tests have provided much valuable information but, as mentioned by the investigators, have not provided complete information on the effect of "rate of loading'! This is partly due to the fact that the chisel motion during drop tests is not a controlled motion which can be varied in form and frequency. Therefore, it seemed that additional information could be obtained by studying chisel impact under conditions where both the motion and the frequency of loading could be controlled. There has been little investigation of the gold-germanium binary alloys. Haughtonl does not mention any work on the system. In a review article commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of germanium, E. Einecke2 mentioned a gold-germanium eutectic at 24 atomic per cent Ge (10.4 weight per cent) melting at 359°C., but did not give the source of his information. From measurements of electrical conductivity, J. 0. Linde3 estimated that at least 0.6 weight per cent germanium is soluble in gold. The recent availability of germanium in this country in commercial quantities has led to interest in its properties and its alloys. This study is part of a program of investigation on germanium alloys; work on ternary alloys involving germanium and gold will be reported later. In this investigation, the composition and melting point of the Au-Ge eutectic reported by Einecke has been found to be substantially correct. Eutectic composition has been placed at I2.0 per cent germanium, however. An alloy of 10.4 per cent Ge, Einecke's value, was found to have a few gold dendrites in it. The cutectic temperature has been determined as 356.0 6 ± 0.5°C., slightly less than the temperature of 359°C. reported by Einecke. The liquidus curves and the solid solubility of ger- manium in gold have been determined, and are shown in Fig. I. Materials and Alloying The germanium used in this investigation was prepared by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. from pure germanium oxide, by reduction in clay crucibles with sodium cyanide. The regulus is quite pure, assaying over 99.9 per cent Ge. High-purity gold obtained from Handy and Harmon was used. Alloying was carried out in graphite crucibles in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to 1050" to iioo°C., and the metal was allowed to freeze in the crucible. Prepared in this way, the gold dendrites in hypoeutectic alloys were somewhat segregated at the bottom and sides of the ingot, and on the hyper-eutectic side the lighter primary germanium tended to gather at the top. Most of the alloys were made from virgin metal. Low-germanium heats were made by alloying pure gold with the eutectic. Melting losses were consistently a few milligrams or less, and the composition could safely be taken from the intended analysis. The 30 per cent and 50 per cent germanium heats for thermal analysis were made in part from remelted higher germanium heats, and they may be OR composition as much as one per cent. Because of the high cost of materials, the weight of heats for thermal analysis were 15 to 20 grams and heats for metallo-graphic, X-ray, and hardness specimens were 2 to 4 grams.

air-lift and equipped with tapered tubing of proper design, we would have a gas input consumption of about 2500 cu. ft. per bbl., which at 3 to 4c. per 1000 cu. ft. would be 7 1/2 to l0c, per bbl., and there would be very infrequent loss of production due to stoppages. It has been demonstrated that with efficient design of air-gas lift, the production of wells can be increased much beyond that obtained with the former type of air-lift employed; also that small wells can be operated by air-lift with tapered tubing at a cost that places this method in competition with beam pumps in many fields. The next step in conservation that the writer expects to have an opportunity to demonstrate is that of restoring the pressure in a pool and producing by air-gas lift all of the oil possible to lift economically. This combined operation is probably the method toward which we shall eventually be working in recovering the maximum quantity of oil from pools where the oil is recovered through bore holes. General Discussion on the Air-gas Lift H. P. Porter, Tulsa, 0kla.—The papers presented at this meeting contain a great amount of valuable information. Wonderful progress has been shown in the development of air and gas-lifts. There has been nearly everything brought out that touches upon the subject. The real point that is lacking is exact knowledge of the velocity with in the flow column which will produce the best effect—that is the thing we must know more about. Velocity in Gas-lift Flow In other lines of industry the matter of velocity of fluids in pipe lines has been well analyzed and there are known laws by which to calculate velocity of flow; for instance, in irrigation work large pumps are designed with intake pipos to employ an intake velocity of 4 ft. per scc. By reduced cross-sect'ion the velocity is increased rapidly as it enters the pump and the discharge rate is at 12 ft. per src., which in turn is reduced in the discharge column to 4 ft. per sec. Crushed coal, grain and granular material is found to be best conveyed by air when a pneumatic conveyor is employed at 100 ft. per sec. As in the design of a pumping plant or a pneumatic conveyor, the velocity at the lower end of the column in the flowing well must be controlled within certain limits for best results. Mr. Griswold, I believe, stated that they had velocity as low as 15 it. per scc. and from that up to 78 ft. per sec. Mr. Pierce and Mr. Lewis showed an ideal flow column showing how the velocity increased as the fluid was carried up the column, hut did not give any figures as to the velocity. It would be well to take that sort of a diagram to establish an ideal velocity at the lower or intake end, and then calculate the velocity from expansion of the gas as it goes up. It may be that the, ideal intake velocity would vary, depending on the depth of the well, the quantity of liquid to be handled or the pressure which it may be desired to hold. The subject is one that might be worth much research.

The influence of thermal and mechanical treatments upon the elevated-temperature stability, the microstructure, and the mechanical properties of aluminumaluminum oxide alloys is investigated. Compacts from atomized and flake aluminum powders were sintered at temperatures just below the melting point of aluminum in a vacuum of 10-4 Torr for several hours and were then hot-extruded. During this treatment the hydrated oxide present on the surface of the powder particles decomposes, the water vapor produced reacts with the aluminum forming additional oxide, and the hydrogen developed is removed by diffusion to the surface. Extrusions of compacts so treated are stable at temperatures up to the melting point of aluminum and do not form blisters and internal defects typical of extrusions from untreated powder. Electron micrographs of extrusions from unsintered compacts show long parallel oriented platelets typical of the IN previous investigations1,2 the properties and structure of aluminum alloys were described which had been produced by cold compacting aluminum powder and then hot pressing and extruding the compacts. Both the structure and the properties of these alloys differ significantly from those of commercially produced aluminum-aluminum oxide alloys. When commercial alloys are produced, they are given a sintering treatment in air at about 600°C between cold compacting and hot pressing.3 During this treatment the hydrated oxide, which forms the coating on the aluminum-powder particles from which the alloys are prepared, is decomposed.4 The chemically bound water which is released reacts with the aluminum and forms aluminum oxide and hydrogen. Most of the hydrogen is eliminated by hydrated oxide skins on the original powder particles, while the oxide particles in extrusions from sintered compacts are broken up. The strength of extrusions from treated powder is somewhat lower, but their ductility is considerably improved over that of extrusions from untreated powder. The slip-trace patterns on electron microgvaphs of extrusions which had been strained in tension before replication indicated that the grain size of the extruded alloys was approximately the same as that of the original powder particles. Coarse-grained alloys were produced by severe cold work and annealing of the extrusions. They have significantly lower room-temperature strength, but about the same ductility as the vacuum-sintered fine-grained alloys. The size and shape of oxides in the coarsegrained alloys is similar to those of the fine-grained alloys, but the particles are somewhat more uniformly distributed. diffusing to the interior or exterior surfaces of the compact, but it is difficult to eliminate all of it because the solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum is very low even near its melting point. Extruded alloys which are not sintered before hot pressing and extrusion appear quite sound upon metallo-graphic examination, but develop severe surface blistering and internal fissuring when they are heated to elevated temperatures after extrusion. Fissures and blisters have been observed even in commercial alloys which had been sintered in air, although they are much less severe.' Because of the importance of this sintering treatment it was studied in this investigation in a modified form, using vacuum sintering rather than sintering in air, to insure more complete elimination of occluded hydrogen. The technique is described and the effect of the treatment upon the structure of the alloys is documented. It has been known for some time that extruded aluminum-aluminum oxide alloys are very finegrained, but an exact delineation of grains in electron micrographs has not been possible. Aging of specimens of Au-20 at. pct Ni and Au-40 at. pct Ni has been followed with electron microscopy, resistance, magnetic measurements, and X-ray diffraction. The periodic structures observed by electron microscopy in Au-Ni alloys by Fisher and Embury are shown to be due to nickel-rich prepre-cipitates. Assuming this alloy system undergoes spinodal decomposition, our observations and available data on thermodynamic properties and elastic constants indicate that the gradient energy coefficient in this system is of the order of 10-5 ergs cm-1 . Shifts of X-ray peaks in this system have been found to be due primarily to residual stresses, not faulting. A large effect of applied stress during aging was detected by X-rays and electron microscopy for the Au-20 at. pct Ni alloy. The presence of a preprecipitation stage during aging of gold-rich Au-Ni alloys for short times below 300°C has been indicated by several previous investigations. Changes in electrical resistivity,1"3 elastic modulus,4 superparamagnetisrn,5 positions of X-ray diffraction peaks,6 and hardness7 have been studied. Electron diffraction and microscopic studies by Fukano8 and Fisher and Embury9 respectively showed that the precipitation process resulted in the formation of periodic composition fluctuations—perhaps spinodal decomposition. MOSS10 detected a satellite with X-rays in quenched specimens, but the wavelength was much smallerthan that found by Fukano. Recently Woodilla and Averbac11 detected a modulation similar to that found by Moss, but with electron diffraction. They suggested that the microstructures observed by Fisher and Embury may be simply due to a Moir'e effect from a back deposit of gold during electropolishing. Satellites in electron diffraction can be enhanced by small bends or tilts of a foil. Even if this were not the case, asymmetric satellites, as are found in Au-Ni are difficult to analyze. They are principally influenced by the large differences in atomic size in this system, and obtaining information on the associated composition fluctuations depends on assumptions as to whether or not there are isolated clusters or composition "waves", and in the latter case whether or not the entire specimen has decomposed. Assuming that decomposition was complete in alloys aged at low temperatures, Woodilla and Averbach suggested that the satellites indicated a composition which varied about the average value by only± 5 pct, much less than that predicted from the phase limits, Fig. 1; they attributed this small variation to a cessation of the reaction caused by the loss of mobile vacancies. In Ref. 12 it was shown that vacancies are trapped by the preprecipitate in this system. Furthermore, after reversion, aging proceeds at a much slower rate than immediately after a quench from the solution temperature,5'11,13 indicating the importance of vacancies in the kinetics. In some senses Au-Ni is a favorable system for studying preprecipitation and reversion mechanisms because of the simplicity of the equilibrium diagram14 and the availability of good thermodynamic15 and diffusion data.16,l7 The calculations necessary to relate the decomposition process to classical nucleation and growth or to spinodal decomposition, as well as those necessary for understanding reversion mechanisms, can, therefore, be made. As an example, the position of the chemical spinodal, calculated from the thermo-dynamic data of Sellars and Maak15 with the method described by Rundman and Hilliard,18 is included in Fig. 1. It is compared to the chemical spinodal calculated from the equilibrium miscibility gap by Cook and Hilliard's method.l9 Included is the coherent spinodal suggested by Golding and MOSS," using measured elastic constants for their calculations and the same ther-modynamic data. The spinodal estimated by Woodilla and Averbach,11 by determining the temperature limits for the observation of the satellites discussed above, is also given. The economical recovery of the valuable constituents from the effluent of gas-con-densate wells has developed into a problem of balancing the cost of recovery against the cost of compressing the residual gas back into the formation. A possible method of extracting the gasoline and distillate from the natural gas is by oil absorption at high pressures. In order to design and evaluate an absorption plant, fundamental data on the composition of the coexisting hydro- carbon vapor and liquid phases at various temperatures and pressures are essential. A review of the literature indicated that the necessary data for the design of such plants are lacking. The nearest approach to desired published data is that of Katz and Hackmuth,~ who experimentally deter-mined the composition of the coexisting vapor and liquid phases in a natural gas-crude oil system at pressures up to 3000 lb. per sq. in. and at temperatures from 40' to zoo°F. This paper presents the results of the experimental determination of the equilib-rium distribution of the hydrocarbons methane through hexane between natural gas and a typical absorber oil. The ranges of temperature and pressure chosen were from 33' to r8oUF. and from 100 to 5000 lb. per sq. inch. Materials The absorber oil was a typical naturally occurring, Straw-colored distillate that had previously been steam-distilled to an initial boiling point of 300 F. The physical and chemical properties, including the results of an Engler distillation, are presented in Table I. Certified analyses of these compounds showed their purity to be in excess of 99.5 per cent and they were riot further purified.

The data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. Dragline vs. Bucket-line Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 106 gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new 7-cu. ft, bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and in operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ Per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These Percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind- The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft- (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. Yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10 gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costin 4¢ Per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ Per cu. yd. Because of small yardage, new equipment is not warranted, therefore we can assume that the dredges of both types are used equip-ment, fully depreciated. Dismantling, mov-

Due to safety-imposed constraints on clearances for mobile bulk handling equipment, it is necessary to optimally select a unit based on speed and size. The unit cannot be both large and fast. Since output is proportional to both size (or capacity) and speed, the combination must be carefully examined to maximize output. A simple graphical procedure and a calculus-based solution are presented to accomplish this. While the procedure applies to all mobile bulk handlers, as an example of the solution technique, attention is focused on shuttle cars. Background Major variables To fully define a bulk handling problem, the conditions, equipment, and activities must be characterized. The conditions and activities, when lumped together, are termed "encumbered space," since they "act to impede motion, as with a burden" (Lineberry, 1979). The insertion of mobile bulk handling equipment into what is already a difficult set of conditions and activities compounds the state of encumbrance, as limited space is competed for by many normal and life support systems. Long (1972) recognized the effects of design criteria, including road width, on haulage vehicle speed and, therefore, on production. Velocity-clearance curves Velocity-clearance curves are either available or can be constructed in the field. A preliminary set of curves for average conditions and activities is shown in Fig. 1, where clearances are only for the side of the vehicle (Lineberry and Adler, 1984). These curves set the safe speed limits for a vehicle operating at given clearances, under given conditions and activities. When feasible, velocity-clearance curves should be constructed through field measurement and observation. Curve construction should also consider haulway roughness, distances, and operator skill, as well as loading and dumping characteristics. It should be noted that haulage capacity determination is a total systems problem, not one just dependent on velocity and clearances. Production requirements and company capabilities also influence capacity determination.

Explanation of the usual methods of large-production mill treatment, such as flotation or wet tabling, or of chemically treating industrial minerals, is not included in the scope of this paper, although one of these methods might be, in certain instances, augmented by one or more of the special methods that will be enumerated herein. Description of these special methods will be centered on magnetic separators, electrostatic separators and air flotation or air tables. Magnetic Sepaeatohs In general, separation is achieved by exerting upon a particle some kind of force opposed to gravity, either directly or at an angle. For example, in the Wetherill or cross-belt type of magnetic separator some particles are lifted vertically from the others because they have been exposed to a force to which they respond more readily than particles of lesser magnetic susceptibility. Of course, there is a limitation to this vertical rise, for the particle must be of a high enough susceptibility to receive a magnetic force greater than the 980 dynes per gram of gravitational urge. To overcome this limitation, the induction type of magnetic separator was developed, so that it is only necessary to instill, say, 30 to 60 dynes per gram instead of the 080, to cause a deflection away from the vertical in falling, and that deflection can be used advantageously when falling by inserting a dividing knife-edge. The induction magnetic separator (Fig. 1) has become a fairly well known method of concentrating and purifying. The direct process for the manufacture of iron which is principally used in the United States, in New York and New Jersey, is called the Jersey forge, the Champlain forge, the Catalan forge, the Bloomary forge or fire, and sometimes a Forge fire. Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, who has discussed the process as applied to the beach sands of Canada as well as to ores, in the Report of the Canadian Geological Survey for 1867-69, has shown that the name of Catalan forge is incorrect, as this process in no way resembles the Catalan, but is really the old German b1oomary modified by long use in this country. Dr. Hunt gives the probable history of the introduction of the process into the United States, and a series of historic citations of great interest relating to it. Notwithstanding the improvements which have been made in the constrnction of the furnace and its greater output, the process to-day, in all its essential features, is carried out as Karsten described it. It should now be known as the American Bloomary. The name of Jersey or Champlain forge or fire is not sufficiently distinctive. The name of Bloomary, by which the process is usually distinguished, is objectionable, not because it is incorrect but because it is indefinite, as the Knobbling fires, which are a very slight modification of the Walloon process, for making blooms either from pig iron or by sinking scrap, are also called Bloomaries, and although Knobbling fires are only used in a few localities where charcoal pig is made, and special grades of charcoal-refined blooms are required, one does not, without an explanation, know whether the blooms are being manufactured from ore or pig. The name Forge fire is equally indefinite, as it might just as well apply to any of the five direct methods of making blooms which have been in use in Europe, but which have now mostly gone out of date. The name of American Bloomary, however, is the one which most completely describes it, and is the one least open to objection. The names of' German, Jersey, and Champlain bloomary are too local, and these adjectives are thought unnecessary by those who use the process, and we shall not therefore describe it under any of these names, but as the American Bloomary process.

The uranium mill at Gunnison, Colorado, started crushing ore Dec. 31,1957, and has now been operating four months. The acid leached ore is washed by counter-current decantation through a system of four classifiers and four thickeners and most of the dissolved uranium reports in the overflow from the first washing thickener. This uranium is extracted from the aqueous pregnant solution by solvent extraction using di-2-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid and tri-butyl phosphate dissolved in a high-flash-point kerosene as the extracting organic. The pregnant organic is then stripped with soda ash solution. The uranium bearing soda ash solution is filtered to remove insoluble carbonates and any sediment reaching that part of the circuit. The clarified carbonate pregnant solution is then acidified to 3 pH, heated to 180°F to drive off the last traces of CO2, and the uranium finally precipitated as yellow cake with MgO.

Dissemination of technical data on developments in rock-blasting techniques in Sweden initially takes place as personal contacts and contacts between companies. In addition to these informal contacts, contacts occur in Sweden in a somewhat more organized form. There exists an informal working group--the Rock Blasting Committee--which consists of a number of personal representatives from various companies that perform rock blasting on a large scale and from firms manufacturing the equipment that is used. This means that people from both mining and construction companies get together, plus the manufacturers of explosives, drill steel, drilling machines, and loading equipment. This working group has, so far, succeeded very well in ignoring the purely commercial interests of the companies concerned. Cooperation in this form was started in the 1940's when the tungsten-carbide drill steel was invented-the group originally concentrated entirely on the development of that product. Their activities have been broadened since that time and now a meeting is held every year, at which practical experiences are reported. Only in the past five years have subjects relating to blasting procedures to avoid rock damage been treated at such meetings. This, of course, does not mean that such techniques had been neglected previously. It does, however, reflect the fact that practice in this field is still under development. Why do we try to be careful about the rock surfaces? Obviously, it is a question of economic evaluation. An even rock surface provides, in certain cases, the conditions for more favorable maintainance costs later on, greater strength, and a diminished risk of slides. The economic connections in this field, however, are neither simple or clear. A well-controlled blasted rock surface limits the need for concrete when you later build the concrete constructions. In this respect, the connections are all the more clear. In certain situations, such as tunnels for hydroeletric power plants, a good rock surface that is not lined is hydraulically more favorable than a more coarsely blasted surface. BRAZIL has had an industry based on ocean beach deposits of heavy minerals containing monazite, zircon, rutile, and ilmenite for well over 40 years, but except at the very earliest period, prior to 1906, and again during World War 11, has this industry been at all comparable in size with similar operations in other countries. Limiting factors have been neither a lack of reserves nor lack of markets (except for zircon). Although poor local transportation and shipping facilities have handicapped the development in Brazil, these conditions were perhaps equally bad (when mining operations started) in the Indian State of Travancore, and in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, in which states the principal production of beach deposits of heavy minerals has occurred. The outstanding restraints on the Brazilian industry have been the lower quality of the Brazilian minerals, the relative small size of individual deposits that were known until recently, the lack of interest of Brazilian investors in mining ventures, and the unfavorable climate for investment of foreign capital under Brazilian mining law. The lower quality of the minerals is indicated by the fact that the Brazilian monazite carries only 5 to 6 pct Tho2*, and the ilmenite 561/2 pct TiO2, whereas the corresponding Travancore minerals carry 9 pct Tho, and 60 pct TiO, respectively. The Brazilian zircon is a dirty brown color (which can be removed readily) as compared with the gleaming whiteness of the Australian zircon. An inadequate market for the abundant zircon that will be available in any operation in Brazil is certainly a heavy restraint, since otherwise it could be an important byproduct. The oxide of zirconia, baddeleyite, that has come from Brazil is from other sources.' Since the Brazilian beach sands carry only a little rutile, that mineral has not been available as a valuable byproduct to help finance the operations. Substantial tonnages of rutile have been exported from Brazil. The sources of this mineral are stream placers and residual deposits over gneisses in the States of Goyaz, Minas Geraes, Ceara, etc. (Leonardos,' and Chambers". With these handicaps, Brazilian production from beach sands has been marginal, and there has been only one consistent producer. This is a company, originally French, which was called Companie de Franco-BrazilliCne, but, with the downfall of France in 1940, became Brazilian under the name Monazita e Ilmenita do Brasil ("Mibra"). This company has operated several deposits in the vicinity of Guara-pary, in the State of Espirito Santo. Its office and plant has been at Guarapary. Recently a company called, "Fomil" (Fomento Monazita-Ilmenita) started operations. This company was organized by the Foote Mineral Co. of Philadelphia, and such share as a foreign company can hold under Brazilian law has now been acquired by the Lindsay Light and Chemical Co. of Chicago. When the writer went to Brazil in the fall of 1940, he found that no general survey of the beaches had been made except for a thorough study of part of the area by Abreu.4 The paper by Miranda6 had not then been written. The federal Geological Survey and Department of Mines knew only of the existence of the deposits in Espirito Santo south of Vitoria, and had a hazy idea that others might be found north of Vitoria. One deposit in Bala was known in Rio, but the larger one at Guaratiba was not known, although a Frenchman had prospected
