When the Age of Machinery was suddenly thrust upon civilization about the beginning of the 19th century, an unprecedented demand for mineral resources sprang up. This demand brought about the rapid development of the known ore deposits and the discovery of such other deposits as could be encountered by energetic and canny prospectors. Thus in the countries now reasonably accessible nearly all orebodies have been located except those which are totally concealed even from the eyes and "senses " of experienced and expert prospectors. The high rate of exhaustion of known ore deposits and the necessity of looking farther and farther ahead for raw materials as a matter of insurance on the stupendous capital outlays involved in mining, development, and conversion operations, have resulted in exceptional activity in three different fields of effort. The first is purely geographic. Prospectors are now penetrating the few hitherto inaccessible regions in the hope of stumbling upon exposed ore deposits or locating visible indications of their presence. The second is chemical. Industrial chemists and metallurgists are seeking to facilitate the exploitation of lower grade ores or to find methods of recovering valuable metals from common substances. In the third field of effort lie the activities of the economic geologist and the mining engineer, who endeavor to locate concealed ore deposits which would remain hidden from the prospector no matter how expert or conscientious he might be. Obviously the task which such a man must face is both exacting and indefinite, and the tools which he has heretofore been permitted to bring to it are, for the most part, abstract—a knowledge of certain fundamental principles and processes involved in the origin, occurrence, structure, and distribution of deposits of natural resources and of the rocks which form the environments of those deposits; and a process of reasoning by analogy supplemented by the use of the diamond drill, or such artificial exposure as the test pit, trench, shaft, or tunnel.

In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer. We should give them equal importance; for we know that to produce the best results me must start with a good

From 1917 to 1926 mining at the Climax Molybdenum Co. property was confined to the Leal and White levels at elevations of 12,145 and 11,935 ft respectively and to surface outcrops above the Leal level. At present the production is coming from the Phillipson and Storke levels at elevations of 11,465 and 11,168 ft. Until 1926 when B. S. Butler recognized the relationship existing between the orebody and a central core of fine-grained hydrothermal quartz, the orebody was believed to be tabular in form. The orebody lies within the pre-Cambrian granites and schists and another rock type designated as the Climax porphyry and surrounds a highly silicious core, the mineable portion of which varies in thickness from 250 to 400 ft.

BECAUSE it is necessary that the powders made for casting have a magistery of salt water, I wish now to teach you to prepare the salt that must form this magistery, for without it these powders would not have the toughness to hold themselves together when they are dry. In short, you take the quantity [119v] of salt that you need to prepare and put it in a rough pot, either baked or, if it suits you better, raw but well dried. This is completely covered with a lid or is luted with well- made moulding clay. Then it is encircled with brick ends at a distance of three dita, like a drying furnace. This space is filled with good charcoal; fire is applied and it is left to stand until all the charcoal is consumed by itself* Then you take that quantity of this burned or rather melted salt which you wish to use for moistening the clay and which you think can be dissolved in the water so that it wd remain very salty. It is boiled in a pot with water and then left to stand. After it has settled, your powder is moistened with it and used for moulding. When you see by testing it that the powder stands up as you wish, it is good. If not, give it some more of this water again and continue until you see that it holds enough. For without this magistery it would return to the dryness that it had before as a powder, and you could not use it without fear that it would fall from the Games. In this way this earth, either natural or artificial, is prepared and made ready, and it is used as the need occurs.

This contribution is prompted by the fact that the writer has recently published an article" which has in part the same general conclusions as B. S. Butler's, namely, the form of the standard mineral paragenesis in hypogene deposits and the parallel transition from early high temperature acid to late low temperature alkaline or neutral solutions. Since the writer also recognizes that he is not fully qualified to discuss the formation of ore deposits as a chemical problem, this discussion will be limited to summarizing other observations and will suggest how Butler's Table II might be made more effective. The form of Butler's table is not unlike that widely used by European geologists30 in which the various minerals are related to the types of ore fluids-pegmatitic, pneumatolic and hydrothermal. Thus the decrease in temperature and change in pH of the ore- bearing fluids as recognized by Butler may also be paralleled by perhaps even greater changes in composition, density, and character.

A PREVIOUS paper1 has summarized the effect of A all metallic elements on the lattice parameters of magnesium. The present paper deals with the effect of temperature on the lattice parameters and the way in which that effect is modified by alloyed elements. The experimental techniques for sample preparation, exposure to the X-ray beam, measurement of line diameters, and calculation of the parameters were the same as reported in the previous paper. The temperature of the specimen was raised by surrounding the mounted compact with a conical Glas-Col,* the base of which was sealed with Saran film. In this way the temperature of the specimen could be raised to 200 °C, which was the maximum desired in the present study. Control of temperature was effected by maintaining a constant, desired voltage to the resistance coils of the Glas-Col through a Variac. Temperature was measured by an iron constantan thermocouple embedded in the body of the specimerl so that the thermocouple bead was within 1/16 in. of the surface exposed to the X-ray beam. Variation of temperature during an exposure was less than + 1/4 oF. A series of eight alloys, consisting of pure Mg, Mg+Ag, Mg+Al, and Mg+Sn were studied. All percentage values are in atomic percent. The results are given in Table I. The density values given in Table I were calculated from the lattice parameters, using an equation due to Foote and Jette:"

THE terms surface tension .and surface energy are well known when applied to liquids and are generally described by referring to the excess energy of the air: liquid interface as a result of unsaturated molecular forces surrounding the surface molecules of the liquid due to the presence of the air phase on one side. Such unbalanced forces produce the familiar water droplet of spherical form and are generally summed up as a surface tension measured in dynes per centimeter which can be shown mathematically to be equal numerically to a corresponding surface energy expressed in ergs per square centimeter. A specific surface energy, however, is best thought of as the energy necessary to produce one unit of new surface on a substance. Hence, in producing a bubble in a flotation cell the impeller must supply surface energy corresponding to the air: liquid interfacial area on the interior of the bubble. Inasmuch as it is relatively easy to extend or contract the surface of a liquid, there are a number of successful methods for liquid surface tension, or energy, measurement based upon surface deformation. This happy state of affairs does not, however, extend to solids, which are considered to possess surface energies for the same reasons as do liquids, i.e. because of unsaturated ionic bonds at the solid gas interface. As in the case of the flotation cell producing surface on liquids as new bubbles, it takes energy to produce new surface on solids as new particles. As every mill man knows, this surface is produced on mineral solids in a grinding mill by the action of a tumbling mass of iron balls. But here so much energy usually is wasted by the inefficient action of these balls that a large amount of heat is generated, and the surface energy production may be easily confused with the energy necessary to produce this ineffective heat. The tumbling balls and fracturing minerals ultimately take their energy from a rather large electric motor. It has been variously estimated that from 10 to 20 pct" only of this energy from the motor does not appear as heat and may be presumed to appear as surface energy on the minerals present.. Such a production of new surface on the mineral phases is accompanied, of course, by a size reduction that is inevitable as more and more mineral interior molecules become surface molecules by the fracture exposure. This size reduction of mineral particles, although the most obvious feature and perhaps the sole object of the milling operation, is from this energy viewpoint the outward manifestation of the production of surface energy only. Measurement of the characteristic surface energies of pure minerals and their various mixtures in ores would be a step towards understanding of the energetics of the commercial grinding operation. In addition, the characteristic surface energy of a mineral is probably a physical property specific for that mineral, and therefore, from a scientific standpoint, should be measured. It is interesting to note that, in contrast to the large body of work on the surface tensions of liquid systems and biological systems, the field of solid surface energies has been neglected. Prior to. 1920 it is difficult to find more than one or two references to work on solid surface energies in Chemical Abstracts. Since 1920 such references number somewhat less than 100, while those on liquid systems are numbered in the thousands. Much of this apparent neglect of the field of solid surface energies (the term is intended to be somewhat inclusive at this point and refers both to the solid: gas, and the solid: liquid interface) is because of the lack of a reliable method of measurement rather than any lack of scientific curiosity. It was, and still is, difficult to produce new surface on a solid without the simultaneous production of interior changes in the same solid which may consume part of the energy used. The hydrostatic steel mine shaft liner (HSL) Provides a permanent wall lining for drilled shafts. It is watertight and suitable for bad ground conditions. After a shaft has been drilled to its full depth, the HSL is lowered into it and secured in place with cement grout. The liner consists of a cylindrical steel shell usually reinforced with exterior stiffening rings. The shell is basically designed for compressive strength and the rings are provided to give the shell added resistance to buckling. There are no published standards for the correct procedures to design an HSL. This paper gives a method that appears logical. A design solution can be complex with increased opportunity for error. This paper presents simple formulas to produce sufficient accuracy for construction design. Two new concepts are presented, referred to as transition pressure and critical pressure. An example demonstrates use of the formulas and concepts presented. To facilitate comprehension and use of the formulas, Greek letters are avoided and most of the English alphabet symbols used refer by association to their definitions. An appendix shows derivation of the formulas.

The theory for unsteady radial flow of gas, as simplified by Aronofsky and Jenkins, has been reviewed and compared with actual well performance. This study indicated that the theory should be modified by the introduction of an empirical "rate of flow" function "Y(q)". The expansion of the theory on the flow of gas to include a Y(q) term bridges the gap between the theory of unsteady-state flow of gas and actual gas-well behavior. Apparently, the Y(q) term is a function only of the rate of flow for a given well. The completion factor or skin effect is associated with the Y(q) function in such a manner that at least two or more sets of drawdown or pressure build-up tests are needed to separate the Y(q) function and the completion factor. Since the Y(q) function used in this report represents an energy loss dependent on rate of flow near the well-bore of a gas well which is in addition to the loss required by Darcy's law, the Y(q) function is related to the exponent of the back-pressure curve for a gas well. Techniques and equations are presented which permit the estimation of stabilized and "short-time" deliver-abilities. INTRODUCTION The published theory of radial unsteady-state flow of gas through porous media may be divided into papers1-" which use Darcy's law as a premise and other papers4-7,16-10 which recognize that Darcy's law may not hold for flow into gas wells. Miller8 compared theory based on Darcy's law with actual gas-well behavior and concluded that flow into gas wells deviates from Darcy's law. Houpeurt4,5 in a thorough investigation of flow into gas wells concluded that the flow rate into a gas well is proportional to the difference between the squares of upstream and downstream pressures elevated to a power between 1.0 and 0.5. Houpeurt also concluded that the deviation from Darcy's law is caused by irreversible, kinetic energy exchange between the flowing gas and the porous media. Tek9 presented a complete evaluation of the flow problem in gas wells. Several investigators state that the inclusion of gas compressibility into flow equations based on Darcy's law does not begin to explain the flow problems suggested by gas-well behavior. For many years, natural-gas engineers have realized that gas wells by actual test exhibit behavior which cannot be explained entirely by Darcy's law. Many tests on gas wells have indicated that a value of 0.85 for the exponent in the back-pressure equation is a fair average for many wells. However, Darcy's law either for steady or unsteady-state conditions indicates that the exponent should be 1.0. The purpose of this paper has been to examine this deviation from Darcy's law and to present a reasonable mathematical means of evaluating the deviation. The method presented in this paper combines previous theory with an empirical function to provide a description of gas-well behavior. All equations in this report are for constant terminal-rate-of-flow conditions. While present methods of testing wells usually are not based on this concept, they are believed to approach the constant terminal-rate conditions closely in many tests. However, several gas wells were tested by holding the rates of flow constant in order to approach more closely the constant terminal rate of flow; the results confirm the concepts presented in this paper. Procedures for computing turbulent flow of gas in steady state near the well bore and a graphical method for predicting unsteady state laminar flow at distances from the well have been combined to compute pressure gradients in gas reservoirs. Methods are discussed for predicting single and multiple transients at constant flow rate in an infinite reservoir, predicting constant How rate. in a finite reservoir, reproducing and interpreting back pressure test data, and prediction of the behavior of a closed-in gas well. An example of the graphical method is given for a single transient and the results are compared to a published analytical solution. A typical calculation of the pressure gradient in a reservoir and the production of gas is made .starting with data from a hack pressure test. INTRODUCTION The calculation of pressure gradients throughouse a ga-reservoir at any point in its production history is a complex problem involving turbulent flow near the well bore and unsteady state flow of the gas from the reservoir. The problem is complicated further by the variety of boundary conditions that may be imposed upon the flow. Such boundary conditions include finite or infinite reservoirs. constant or variable rates of production, constant or varying bottom hole pressures, complex initial pressure distributions throughout the reservoir, and pressure maintenance through cycling. In addition to these problems there are the practical difficulties associated with natural gas reservoir analysis These might include: (1) variation. in the permeability and porosity throughout the formation. (2) variations in the thickness of the formation, (3) communication of the producing formation with other producing zones. (4) radial variations in permeability due to influx of drilling fluid. acidizing. or the buildup of liquid in the formation around the well, (5) partial penetration of the producing zone. (6) water flood, and many others. These problems will be considered eventually. In the mean- time, it is necessary to present methods of handling the case of radial flow through a homogeneous, regular, producing stratum to a single well uncomplicated by other factors. The idealized case of steady state, radial flow from a natural gas reservoir was studied by Elenbaas and Katz5 and by Mac-Koberts.' An analysis of the unsteady flow of gases through porous media has been made by Aronofsky and Jenkins' for the one dimensional laminar case with the boundary conditions of constant downstream pressure and uniform initial pressure. Solutions for the partial differential equation for unsteady state radial flow of liquids through porous media have been given by Van Everdingen and Hurst" for the constant bottom hole pressure and constant production rate cases for laminar flow in a reservoir initially at a constant pressure. The analogous heat transfer equation has been treated by Perry and Berggren9 for the case of quenching a cylindrical hole in an infinite medium to a constant temperature. The back pressure curve, which involves the variation of the bottom hole pressure as it is determined by the behavior of the reservoir as a whole. has been studied by Rawlins and Schellhardt,10 Binck-lev,' Baumel and Breitung,' and others. No complete. adequate treatment has been given for the unsteady state, radial flow of gases into a cylindrical hole from a porous medium with or without the presence of turbulent flow and for any set of boundary conditions. If one relies only on analytical solutions of the basic equations, a new solution must be obtained for each new boundary condition. Furthermore, the complexity of the mathematical expressions for boundary conditions other than the very simple cases limits the use of analytical solutions. Graphical methods exist, however. that are general in nature, accurate, and readily employed. The analysis of steady and unsteady, laminar and turbulent, radial flow for various boundary conditions with application to specific natural gas well problems by means of graphical procedures forms the content of this paper. STEADY STATE RADIAL FLOW EQUATION FOR LAMINAR AND TURBULENT FLOW A steady state radial flow equation for laminar and turbulent flow through unconsolidated sands has been given by Muskat as discussion of the work by Elenbaas and Katz.5 This equation is based on the properties of unconsolidated

Primary copper-sulfide ore deposits that are well below the water table can be chemically mined by in-situ high-pressure leaching. The leaching is accomplished by pumping oxygen gas into the bottom of a large underground flooded column of rubblized ore. Part of the injected oxygen dissolves under the high hydrostatic pressure in the column. With a high enough injection rate, the excess oxygen gas induces a convective circulation of oxygenated solution within the rubble column, which transports dissolved oxygen throughout the system. At elevated temperatures, this results in a relatively rapid dissolution of the copper minerals. A method of calculating the leaching rates is presented. The calculation is done by means of a finite-difference computer code that couples all of the processes relating to copper leaching, convective circulation, and the injection, dissolution, and consumption of oxygen. Results of the calculation for a typical case show that over 70% of the copper can be extracted in less than six years with good efficiency in oxygen utilization.

In the mining industry, there are two widely accepted methods of determining the investment worth of a contemplated project. One of these is the payback method and the other is the more recent discounted cash flow (DCF) technique known as the internal rate of return. Both techniques can be useful, but it is important to know the assumptions and characteristics of each procedure and how these may affect an investment decision. The Payback Period-A Shortcut to Yes or No The payback period is simply the time it takes for the cash inflows from an investment to equal that investment. Understandably, projects with short payback periods are preferred to those with longer ones. The payback period may be measured either from the time the initial investment is made or from the time that it begins to yield positive cash flows, but the latter approach is more realistic because it permits more accurate allowance for lost interest on the invested capital.

Discussion of the paper of E. P: Mathewson, presented at the Butte Meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 78, June, 1913, pp. 1033 to 1037. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa. :-Speaking to the question of the development of the basic lining, and speaking from a somewhat considerable study of the history of the process, ,I think Mr. Mathewson's conclusion (in the last paragraph. of his paper) is perfectly justified and is very fairly stated. Messrs. Smith and Pierce worked at developing their process for many years ; copper men had been trying their level best to get away from the silica lining of the converters and had uniformly failed. On one page of Mr. Mathewson's paper we read that at the old works of the Anaconda Company, at Anaconda, the experiments " were abandoned on the score of cost and lack of advantages." On the next page, after describing the work of Messrs. Smith and Pierce, we have the statement that the Anaconda Company lined a shell with mangnesite brick and the ?results were excellent." I think Mr. Mathewson's statement that to Smith and Pierce belongs the credit of developing a long-discredited idea, is correct. C. D,. DEMOND, Anaconda, Mont. :-It seems to me that the matter of the lining is important; my impression is that they used tar in their basic lining and that did not seem to be at all successful at Anaconda, but silicate of soda was very successful. MR. RICHARDS :-I did not know that they- had abandoned the use of tar. MR. DEMOND :-I said I thought that was the practice. At Anaconda that was not at all satisfactory in the basic linings. Silicate of soda was very satisfactory and is so.

Froth flotation has been described by several authors" as being analogous to a first-order rate process. Although a few investigators"," have found orders other than one fit their data best, the rate is described most often by the first-order equation, [ ] where r is rate of disappearance of floatable mineral by flotation, C(t) is concentration of floatable mineral in the cell, t is time, and k is first-order flotation rate constant. One of the difficulties in using this rate equation to develop a mathematical description of an actual flotation process is the determination of a suitable value of the constant k. The value of k, which reflects the floatability of the floatable mineral, is dependent on the hydrodynamic conditions in the cell, type and concentration of flotation reagents used, pulp density, and pH, method of froth removal, aeration rate, particle characteristics, and many other factors. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that each particle of floatable material has a distinct value of k and that a unique distribution of k values exists for given feed and cell conditions. This has been observed and discussed by several investigators, and mathematical descriptions of the batch cell and steady-state continuous cell with distributed flotation rate constant have been developed." The mathematical description in the form of a transfer function of the continuous or flow cell under unsteady-state conditions with a distributed flotation rate constant has not been presented in the literature. This paper comprises suggestions on certain points rather than a complete survey of the whole subject. In other words, it is a contribution to the kenera1 discussion invited by John Hays Hammond in his paper, presented as a Presidential address at the Chattanooga meeting of the Institute, in October, 1908.1 Mr. Hammond says, in conclusion: "... I am not offering a code, or even an official and representative declaration of principles.. My remarks are intended, and will, I hope, be accepted, simply as a contribution to that discussion of their theme in which every engineer of experience may participate." Such a discussion has been conducted in technical journals, as well as in contributions to the Transuctions of the Institute; and, in the remarks here offered, I shall have occasion to refer the read& to what I have thus published elsewhere, for more extended statements of my views. What Mr. Hammond says about loyalty to employers, the double capacity of the engineer as an employer, the expert witness, commissions on machinery, the statement that most swindling is done by laymen and not by engineers, duty to the investing public, and the engagement of local engineers as colleagues, it is a pleasure to indorse. INTRODUCTION Tochibora Mine belonged to Kamioka Mines, which are located in Gifu Prefecture, the cen- tral part of the Japanese main island, has occupied the important position as a main source of silver, lead and zinc for the smelter of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd.. The annual production of crude ore goes up to about 1 mil- lion metric tons with average grades of 20g/t Ag. 0.31% Pb, and 4.18% Zn. For the last 20 years, the mine has struggled with the depressed zinc metal price in yen and the escalation of operating cost, especially la- bour cost. For instance, prices of commodities and labour cost have been raised 8 times and 14 times respectively during this period. On the other hand, total operating cost has been con- trolled to increase 4.5 times. The productivity of the mine has been increased 4 times by means of improvement of individual works and adoption of perfectly mechanized trackless mining system to reform the mining method. Some improvements are presented as follows; Today, drifting is carried out by the tunnelling crew which consists of 9 operators equipped with 5 Mobile-Jumbos, 2 LHD's and a jeep for carrying and loading ex- plosives. In order to get the high utilization of these machines, each crew manages systematically and continuously adjacent 15 faces under the direction of a forceman. As a result, we have accomplished high advance of drift. Furthermore, raising is carried out by a set of the raise-borer in case of long raises like ore- passes and also by the stage blasting method in case of short ones like slot-cuts. Generally speaking, the sublevel stoping method is considered to be one of the best methods for various respects; high productivity, low cost, easy grade control and safety. This method has been introduced in Tochibora Mine since 1950 and is now widely applied to lodes that could not be mined before by this method be- cause of the shapes of them and the conditions of their country rock. Now we are convinced to be nearly accomplished for our method. This report presents some examples of the standard sublevel stoping method and its variations which are practised at the mine. STANDARD SUBLEVEL STOPING Up to 1979 since 1950 when this method was first applied at the mine, 17 million tons of crude ore have been produced by this method, which amounted to 55% of the total production of the mine. During three decades, the productivity has been increased considerably by means of trackless mining system using large-sized machines and etc.. In other words, mining efficiency has been increased from 20 tons/man.shift to 100 tons/man.shift at large stopes. Formerly undercutting was carried out above the drawing drift by jack-legs and small scrapers and then several cone-shaped glory holes were made by stopers between the undercut level and the draw level. But now, a undercut drift is driven in parallel with the haulage drift at the same level of it. And at the undercut drift, drilling upward is carried out by a large-sized machines like the fan drill in order to extract the broken ore directly at the drawing drift connected with the haulage drift. Simplification of the work as well as utilization of large- sized machines enables to get higher productivity. During the past eight years, in trying to estimate world consumption of petroleum and related products, the authors have been unable to account for all the supplies available in any one year. There has remained at all times a balance, which at first was thought to represent almost entirely additions to stocks in foreign countries. But as this discrepancy continued year after year-over 148,000,000 bbl. in 1937—it became unreasonable to conclude that corresponding additional foreign storage capacity was continuously being made available. It became therefore clear that the balance in question was due to other causes than to additions to stocks. Last year Mr. A. G. White, Chief Economist of the Petroleum Economics Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, pointed out to one of the authors that an unknown and important factor in consumption of petroleum and related products is to be found in the requirements for military purposes in foreign countries. This paper is the result of Mr. White's timely suggestion. There are no reliable data available either on the storage capacity, and therefore oil stocks, or on the petroleum consumption for military purposes in foreign countries. This information is so closely related to national defense that its divulgation is forbidden. One can therefore but surmise as to these facilities and needs in line with the relative strength of the military land, air and sea forces of the various countries. The authors have assumed many of the component factors that go to make the tables herein presented, such as fuel consumption of fighting ships in relation to tonnage and horsepower, gasoline consumption of air fleets in relation to number of planes, and the consumption of petroleum products by mechanized armies; but in making these assumptions they have availed themselves of the advice and counsel of those whose wide experience in these questions make their views authoritative.
