The Iraq Petroleum Company, Ltd. continued its systematic exploration and exploitation of the Kirkuk field on a unitized basis. Pressures, gas-oil ratios, oil-water level and oil-gas level remained satisfactory. All wells were produced by flowing and more than two-thirds of the crude was stabilized. The only exports from Iraq during 1937 were from the Kirkuk field. Mosul Oilfields, Ltd., through its operating subsidiary, the British Oil Development Company, Ltd., inaugurated an exploratory program to find lighter oil than the heavy, black, sulphurous reserve proved in the Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan-Qasab field. Deeper drilling in this field found a small reserve of 17" to 19" A.P.I. black sulphurous oil in the Pilsner (Upper Cretaceous). Ten structures outside the proved field were tested or were under test at the end of the year. In spite of this intensive program no reserve of lighter oil was discovered. The reserve at Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan-Qasab averages 16" A.P.I. with 6+ per cent sulphur from the "continuous limestone" (Lower Miocene, Oligocene, Middle Eocene) and from the Pilsner (Upper Cretaceous). The Khanaqin Oil Company, Ltd., a subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, Ltd., conducted the normal exploitation of its Naft Khaneh oil field and supplied the local Iraq market requirements. Slightly more than 31,600,000 bbl. of crude was produced in Iraq during 1937. The following table gives the total crude produced by the I.P.C. for export during the last four years. The rich Tiller seam in southwest Virginia averages 10 to 15 ft in thickness. But because it is separated into two benches, mining engineers for years considered it neither physically nor economically feasible to mine. Profitable recovery of this coal has been made possible only by: full-seam mining with automatic machines; and the largest and most highly automated coal preparation plant of its kind-a plant ten stories high which washes, screens, and dries at the rate of 1500 tph, and produces both metallurgical and steam coal products. The Moss No. 3 preparation plant of Clinchfield Coal Co. Div. of Pittston Co. is located at Clinch- field, Va., only a short distance from the 450-tph Moss No. 2 plant, and was designed, built and erected by Link-Belt Co.

The migration of slightly solzrhle spherical particles through a solid under the infllrence of a temperature gradient is analylzed for the cases of various transport mechanisms. It is shown that the variation of the velocity of the particles with radius, r, depends on the dominant mechanism of matter transport around or through the inclusion. Thus the velocity varies as r-1 jor surface-dijf1~sion controlled migratzon. is independent of r for volume diffusion in either phase, and varies as if the rate is determined by an interfacial reaction (n is the order of the interfacia1 reaction). These same results hold tor the migration of a cvlinder of length much greater than its radius. and .for other types of potential gradients, e.g., an electrical field. These equations are combined with recent electron-microscopic ohservations to show that the rate of migratzolz of small helium-silled bubbles through copper is determined by surface diffusion of the metal atoms. With these equations and the temperature gradients attainahle in an electron-microscope joil, the dominant transpar/ mechanism (or any migrating pnrtzclos can he determined. AS a result of fission, rare-gas atoms are created in the hot fuel element of a nuclear reactor. These insoluble atoms precipitate to form bubbles of the gas in the fuel. The subsequent migration and coalescence of these bubbles is thought to play a dominant role in the swelling of fuel elements which in turn can limit the fuel-element life. As a result of this practical problem and because of the relative simplicity of the system, workers in several laboratories have imbedded rare-gas atoms in metals with the aid of an accelerator and studied the formation and behavior of the bubbles that form on annealing. Recently Barnes and Mazey have studied the migration of such helium-filled bubbles in copper foils using the electron microscope and the temperature gradient that can be induced in the foil by the electron beam. They found that the smaller bubbles moved faster than the larger ones. It is shown below that, if this is true, the rate-controlling step in their migration is surface diffusion of metal atoms instead of volume diffusion, vapor transport, or an interfacial reaction. The analysis given is in no way limited to gaseous inclusions so the variation of velocity with particle size for any relatively insoluble precipitate particles could be used to obtain information about the relative importance of surface diffusion, volume diffusion, and interfacial reaction in such two-phase systems. VOID MIGRATION IN A TEMPERATURE-GRADIENT ANALYSIS Barnes' studies indicate that helium does not dissolve or diffuse in metals to a measurable extent, so that when the voids move they must do so through the movement of metal atoms from the leading to the trailing sides of the void.' Thus voids might move by surface diffusion, diffusion of vacancies in the surrounding lattice, or vapor transport. We consider first the case of flow by surface diffusion alone. We assume that there is a force, in the sense of irreversible thermodynamics, tending to move the atoms around the bubble in a given direction. We designate this direction as the x axis and the force per atom as Fa. The net rate of flow of atoms from one side of the bubble to the other, under the influence of this force, is the surface flux, Js, times the cross-sectional area available for flow, A,. A, is taken as the circumference times the thickness of the high-diffusivity surface layer 6. Thus where 51 is the atomic volume. For bubbles to advance a distance dx, a volume equal to nr : dx must flow around the void so that The minus sign enters because the bubble moves in the direction opposite to that of the force on the atoms. Because of the necessity for taking regularly occurring open-flow tests in prorated high-pressure oil fields, much gas is turned to atmosphere by way of vertical vent lines leading away from the oil and gas separator. In the past, measurement of such gas has been accomplished by several methods, usually by use of the open-flow Pitot tube. The use of the closed-flow Pitot tube has been avoided apparently chiefly because the ordinary vent-line hook-up makes it necessary to apply the instrument closer to a bend, valve, or obstruction in the pipe than is recommended by rules of good practice. The many advantages that would result from the application of the closed-flow Pitot tube prompted investigation of the actual effect upon quantity rate of flow measurements computed from data obtained with the tube in a normal working position, which is closer to the tee at the base of the vent riser than is usually considered as giving highly accurate results. An effort Was first made to compare the results thus obtained to those under ideal conditions and at high velocities To make this comparison, knowledge of the characteristics of gas flowing at very high velocities is essential. Research for such information indicated that little or no work had been done that would give data necessary for such a comparison, therefore the problem was changed to a test designed to determine the relationship between quantity rates of flow as measured by an orifice meter and a Pitot tube placed at the center of a pipe eight diameters from a tee or ell at the base of a vent riser, through which gas is flowing under low pressures at very high velocities. To determine this relationship, a series of tests was run on a number of 8-in. iron-pipe vent riser., in which the Pitot tube data were taken at the position as stated above. Gas from a wet-gas gathering system was passed through an orifice meter setting and thence to atmosphere by way of the vents. Data were taken simultaneously from the orifice meter and Pitot tube from which computations for comparisons were made. The actual method of comparison is discussed later in this paper. CARNEGIE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY On May 27, twenty-five of the leading representatives of the coal mining industry of Western Pennsylvania met with President A. A. Hamerschlag, of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, with a view to bringing about closer relations between the Institute and the mining interests. It was felt that the advice of the men in the field was necessary for the proper training of young men for mining work. A resolution adopted at this conference, among other things, called for a board of mine operators and engineers to serve in an advisory capacity with the Carnegie Institute of Technology. As a result of the counsel and recommendations of the Advisory Board, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, in cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, has recast its four year course in Mining Engineering and has also established a two-year course in Coal Mining. To carry out this new program, there has been organized the "Cooperative Department of Mining Engineering" in the Division of Science and Engineering of the Carnegie Institute of Technology.

The memory of D. C. Jackling serves chiefly to remind us how much we owe to the pioneers of our industry. Jackling was one of the giants. Orphaned at the age of two, he made his way through sheer persistence and plain hard work. His brilliance gave rise to a vision, and his tenacity made his vision a reality. Foreseeing that economies of scale would make the handling of low-grade ore profitable, he introduced the revolutionary concept of open-pit copper mining. During World War I, the defense effort of the United States was immeasurably strengthened by the tremendous supplies of copper from the western mines that Jackling had made possible. Again in World War II, the demands for copper were supplied, and the nation once more had profound reason to be grateful to this rugged, stubborn man who had long ago ventured into the mountains and unlocked their wealth. We are now embarked upon another great era of change, and we must devise new concepts to meet it. The task is not only to create new techniques of mining, but to forge better ties between men and institutions which will let us work in harmony with the techniques we have. We might recall that while Jackling was a man of towering pride and formidable will, he was also adept at getting others to share his vision and join his purpose. Today our reach for cooperative endeavor must go far beyond our own shores as we seek to develop the buried riches of distant lands. And we would do well to remember that Jackling's remarkable insight would have come to nothing had not British investors been willing to provide much of the initial capital. As was true of so many early enterprises in America, European capital was absolutely essential.

IT has often been reported that coatings may strengthen single crystals and polycrystalline specimens of coarse grain size. This note reports the effect of a surface layer of fine grains on the creep-rupture properties of coarse grained nickel 99.8 pct pure. Sheet specimens were machined from cold-rolled material, finished by surface grinding and annealed at 1230°C in vacuum for 4 hr. Half of them were re-ground on faces and sides and annealed at 925"C for 1 1/4 hr. The double grind-anneal treatment produced a structure consisting of a surface layer of fine grains of 0.02 mm diam on a coarse-grained substrate of grains of 0.40 mm diam. Comparison with specimens which received only the single grind showed that the second grind-anneal did not alter the structure of the substrate. Several modifications were made in specimen design to eliminate erratic rupture behavior outside of the gage length. In the final design the gage section, oriented parallel to the rolling direction, was 1.00 in. long, 0.4 in. wide, and 0.0625 in. thick. End tabs were pinned in place. Although other configurations (welded end tabs, transverse orientation, and wider gage section) showed similar effects of a layer of fine grains, because of the erratic rupture behavior, only the data from the final design are reported here. Creep tests were performed at 650°C in air and in a vacuum of 10~5 mm Hg. Creep rates were measured from the movements of the lever arm. Since the broken sheet specimens could not be fitted together, elongations at fracture measured by means of gage marks, do not include the necked portions adjacent to the fracture. Results of the creep tests with and without the fine grained surface are given in Table I. An explanation for the lower strength in air than in vacuum has been proposed previously in terms of the reduction of crack propagation energy by gas adsorption.l In both environments the fine-grained layer produced a small decrease in minimum creep rate and, except for the shortest test in air, a substantial increase in rupture life. The elongation values at rupture, as they are measured here, do not demonstrate an appreciable effect of the grain structure but do show much smaller ductilities in air than in vacuum. Greater elongations maybe associated with the finegrained layer, however, especially in vacuum, in creep curves such as those in Fig. 1. Duplicate tests were not run to determine the re-producibility of the data. It is felt, however, that, in view of the consistent behavior, the prolongation of rupture life may be attributed to the effect of the fine-grained surface. In the data not reported be-

ALTHOUGH gold is one of the rarer metals, it is widely distributed; it is found on all of the continents and in each of the grand metallogenic provinces of the earth. It is prominent particularly in the shield areas of the earth; these areas have produced a large part of the world's lode gold and in most of them gold lodes are more important than the lodes of other metals. The Scandinavian shield is the only one that has not produced much gold. Nearly all of the world's gold has been derived from lodes and from sands and gravels where gold placers formed by the destruction of lodes. The gold derived from magmatic segregations, from pegmatites and from contact metamorphic deposits is quite subordinate to that derived from auriferous lodes. The lodes include all veins and related deposits that are formed by hot waters that move along fissures or other openings and that deposit vein matter in the fissures and by replacement of the country rocks along the fissures. All of the shield areas of the earth are characterized by large areas of granitic rocks including granitic gneisses, granodiorites and other acid intrusives which here are included in the general term "granite." The granites are intruded into schists, ancient lavas and other rocks which here are designated as the "invaded" rocks. The granites are parts of what once were great batholiths: that is, they are the remaining portions of great deep-seated bodies that slope outward, have very irregular roofs and so far as known have no floors but extend downward to great though unknown depths. Some of them are scores or hundreds of miles across and contain islands or "roof pendants" of the invaded rocks at places where the roofs of the batholiths were low-that is, where erosion has not yet completely unroofed the batholiths.

A 2000-ton ammonia leaching plant has been operated by the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., at Lake Linden, Mich., continuously since February, 1917, except from April, 1921, to April, 1922, during the period of depression following the European war. A description of this plant has been published elsewhere.1 The present article describes the operation of the plant since 1917, together with the changes in the process that have been found to be advisable. In spite of the fact that this plant and that of the Kennecott Copper Co. are the only ones operating on a large scale, much experimental work is being done on ammonia leaching, as applied to oxidized ores, and it is to aid these and other investigators that this detailed account is given. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the original article, the following short abstract is given, as an introduction to a more detailed account of the process and the reasons for present practice.

In 1888 the writer had the honor of submitting to the Institute a paper on " Steel Rails and Specifications for their Manufacture."* In his judgment the specifications were sufficient for "that day and generation." In that paper I said: '' The first duty falls upon the railroad engineer in designing his section. If that is bad, the steel-maker will be heavily handicapped in trying to furnish a satisfactory rail. I suppose it is hopeless to expect the adoption of standard sections."

RESERVE Mining Co., owned jointly, by Armco Steel Corp. and Republic Steel Corp., controls 9% miles of magnetic taconite ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range lying between Mesaba and Birch Lake. The ore reserve which can be mined by open pit methods is conservatively estimated at 1.5 billion tons under a shallow, loose overburden requiring no rock stripping. Taconite now being mined is in the upper cherty horizon. It has been metamorphosed by the intrusion of gabbro and most of the iron oxide is altered to magnetite. The nonmagnetic portion of the iron is practically all in the form of silicate. The magnetic iron is finely disseminated through the rock and requires grinding -150 mesh for clean liberation of the iron oxide from the gangue.

ANYONE who wishes to make the patterns for statues in order to cast them later in bronze, even though he himself is the artificer who made them, must take many things into consideration: first, whether they are large or small, and whether they are wholly round or only in part; then of what material they are made, for the way that can be followed if they are of wax cannot be used if they are of clay, wood, marble, or even of plaster; likewise he must consider whether or not it has irons inside to support it. There is also a great difference in facility if the support is placed more in. one way than in another. Great consideration should be given to whether it is to be made hollow or solid. If you have not been the workman yourself, you must at least have been an active helper in this and in every other part in order to be able to observe everything without a fault. For if they are large it is necessary to make their moulds in pieces, with marks and measurements so that you can replace them-at will exactly in the same order and in the same places after they have been taken out. But if you are the artificer [as well as sculptor] the process is made easier. Taking the ordinary way and, over an iron, make out of well beaten moulding clay, compounded with cloth clippings a core exactly as the statue is to be or however large you wish the hollow to be. Dry and bake it. On top of this work the wax, thickening it all over as much as you wish the bronze to be and finish it completely, remembering to arrange that the base may come out solid with bronze so as to support the whole work. Then take some rods of hammered bronze one dito thick and one palmo long. Pass these throughs the thickness of the wax and fasten them in several places in the core of clay that you made. [81] Do it so that they, project out of the wax a good three or four dita. These are, put in so that when the wax is removed the core is held in the middle of the mould that forms the outer part, and this outer part is held by the inner part, namely the core, so that the mould may not move in any part from its place even when it is handled. This done, take some of that clay made with well-prepared cloth clippings as I taught you, and mix with it if you wish some wash ashes or

A SERIES of papers on the study of austenite grain A size in cast steels has been published recently.'" These studies show that in the as-cast state, the austenite grains are quite large, for they form as the steel freezes at a very high temperature, but a simple reheating above the critical range produces a new set of austenite grains which, in many instances, is finer than ASTM grain sire No. 8. Furthermore, there is no apparent relationship between as-cast austenite grain size and subsequent grain size produced by heat treatment. The as-cast austenite grain size can be determined easily in plain carbon and low alloy steels which produce a continuous grain boundary f errite envelope in the as-cast structure. SUMMARY This paper describes a numerical method for calculating the three- dimensional stresses and displacements induced by tabular excavations in a rock mass consisting of parallel layers of distinct material properties. The method is based on the superposition of numerical solutions for elementary displacement discontinuities in a parallel layered rock mass. The method can be used to analyse complicated excavation layouts such as those encountered in room-and-pillar or longwall mining. The method can automatically take into account the effect of the earth's surface. The method offers an economic and efficient solution to stress analysis problems which cannot be adequately modelled using two- dimensional methods and for which the expense of three-dimensional finite element or general boundary element analysis cannot be justified. INTRODUCTION Underground mining often takes place in tabular or lenticular orebodies. In many cases, for example room-and-pillar and longwall mining, the excavation geometry cannot be adequately modelled by two- dimensional methods of analysis. In these cases resort must be made to three-dimensional methods of analysis. Although in principle three-dimensional finite element models can be used for these geometries, cost limitations have restricted their application to a small number of cases. The White River Shale Project has completed a 5,000-foot production decline and a 30-foot diameter 1,010-foot deep shaft into its oil shale orebody in the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah. This is the first major underground access into these Green River deposits in this basin and provides an opportunity to establish and monitor in-situ rock mechanics stations as input to the mine engineering and planning of this large opening, high-tonnage mine. This paper discusses the history, mine development, and rock mechanics planning for this project.

Strategically situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer-consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommer-cia1 operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennessee's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in Lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1. 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Offcial estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Congressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

I have the honor to submit herewith the report of the Secretary for the year 1915 showing the principal activities of the Institute: Meetings.-The 110th Meeting, including the Annual Business Meeting, was held in New York City, Feb. 15 to 17, 1915. The full report of this meeting is given in Volume LI of the Transactions. The number of papers presented was 53, and the attendance was 357 members and guests. The 111th Meeting was held in San Francisco, Cal., Sept. 16 to 19, 1915. Sixty-eight technical papers were presented, and the attendance was over 400 members and guests. The full report of this meeting is given in the Bulletin for December, 1915. Local Section.-A new, strong Local Section of the Institute, with head-quarters in Arizona and known as the Arizona Section, was formed during 1915. The cases of no auxiliary ventilation and ventilation with tubing were mathematically modeled, using a turbulent dispersion model. The Scooptram® used to load is modeled as a variable-speed, variable-strength source of pollutants moving in and out of the dead-ended drift. Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements. A parametric analysis was performed to determine If a relationship existed between C02 and NO levels. It was concluded from this analysis that when modeling a load-haul-dump cycle, it is necessary to use a model that can predict changes in source strength as well as source location. Carbon dioxide was used as a tracer to calibrate the model since, knowing the fuel flow rate, it is possible to calculate C02 production. The model was then verified after this calibration process using additional experimental results. With the calibrated model, it is possible to predict pollutant concentrations at any location in the heading using an engine map and the previously calculated flow field.
