THE application of indium to bearings was first advocated by C. F. Smart1 in 1938, for the purpose of inhibiting corrosion of certain bearing alloys. He found that a thin layer of indium plated on the bearing surface and subsequently diffused at elevated temperatures markedly decreased the rate of corrosion in lubricating oils containing organic acids. Most of his work was done on cadmium-base alloys, although he showed that the treatment was also effective for copper-lead and other alloys. Since their introduction, indium-treated bearings have found considerable use, particularly in connection with airplane motors.2 Undoubtedly the effectiveness of the indium plate in resisting corrosion depends upon its relative concentration on the bearing surface after the diffusion treatment and after prolonged use at operating temperatures. Some diffusion experiments were made on a number of base metals that had been indium plated, to determine the depth of penetration after heating for reasonably long periods of time. As only the practical aspects were desired, no attempt was made to determine actual diffusion constants. METHOD Two different series of experiments were carried out to study the diffusion of indium into several base metals. Cast cylinders about one-inch diameter were machined to 0.750-in. diameter, so as to remove all surface imperfections, and final finishing was done with oo sandpaper. The original diameters were very carefully measured with micrometers and then a layer of indium was electrolytically deposited on the cylinders from a sulphate bath.3 In the first series of experiments, about 0.002 in. of indium was deposited and diffusion was carried out at 150°C. for a period of 500 hr. in a thermostatically con- trolled electric oven. After the diffusion period, successive layers were machined from the specimens and analyzed spectro- graphically and chemically-the spectro- graphic examination serving as a guide to determine which layers should be chemically analyzed. Apparently there was some surface oxidation of the indium plate due to the long heat-treatment, which may have had some effect on the diffusion. Also, the cadmium alloy showed some incipient melting, which probably was caused by the formation of a low-melting eutectic. To eliminate these factors, another series of experiments was carried out by heating in an electrically heated, automatically controlled, oil bath at lower temperature. The preparation of the specimens was the same as before except that a layer of indium 0.0001 in. thick, an amount commonly used commercially on bearings, was deposited on each of the cylinders. Diffusion was carried out at l20°C. for a period of 200 hours.

A new approach to an old problem has made it possible to do in a a tively short period what has not been accomplished in the past three quarters of a century using strictly experimental methods. A theoretical study was made of the underlying principles whereby a jet is formed by a shaped charge and of the mechanism of the penetration of the target by that jet. It was found that there are more than 10, and perhaps as many as 15 variables affectin!? the performance of the shaped charge. Only a few calculations are necessary to show that it is physically impossible to investigate all of these variables experimentally. The shaped charge theory has been extended to include a previously little-understood mechanism in high explosive phenomena; namely, low order detonation. By superimposing a high order detonation on a zone already undergoing low order detonation, all appreciable improvement in performance is accomplished. The development of a design wherehy these phenomena are coordinated in such a way as to develop a jet which is tailored to meet the specific target requirement will be described in detail. The shortcomings or even impossibility of strictly experimental techniques will be illustrated by a discussion of the development of a special-purpose explosive charge. INTRODUCTION In an article appearing in the May, 1888 issue of Scribner's Magazine, Charles E. Monroe described his early experiments with gun cotton (Fig. 1) which led to his name being most fre-quently connected with our present-day shaped charge. Although the sunken letters or "cavities" in Mon- roe's gun cotton were not lined, they produced some penetration of an iron plate. The credit for the lined shaped charge, however, should rightfully go to Dr. R. W. Wood of the Physics Dept. of Johns Hopkins University, who was responsible for first discovering the fact that a metal liner in a cavity of explosive gave high velocity fragments and/or jets of metal. This discovery was made by Dr. Wood inadvertently while investigating an accidental death resulting from an electric blasting cap. CONVENTIONAL usage defines emery as a natural aggregate of corundum and magnetite. Because emery bodies contain abundant spinel two types are recognized, spinel-bearing and spinel- free. Watson and Steiger1 introduced the name spinellite for emery in which spinel is a major constituuent, but this term has not been generally adopted. Spinel emery grades locally into spinel magnetite rocks with or without accessory corundum. Even this variety has been used commercially in the past. The term emery therefore applies to natural aggregates composed of corundum and magnetite; corundum, magnetite, and spinel; and spinel and magnetite.

THE development of the modern high-speed vibrating screen, together with the increasing availability of long-lasting stainless-steel screen cloth for relatively fine-mesh separations, means that more screen circuits will be used in the future. It seems pertinent therefore to examine a few characteristics of screen-circuit products, and especially the points of difference as compared with products of classifier circuits. The most noticeable change that takes place when substituting screening for classification in a grinding circuit is a substantial drop in the circulating load, owing to the greater ease with which the "fines" leave the circuit. Where circulating loads of 500 to 600 per cent are considered fairly normal in classifier grinding circuits, the grinding circuit equipped with screens for equivalent work will have a circulating load of only 20 to 75 per cent. As a result, the products of screen circuits will show a minimum of overgrinding or sliming as compared with a classifier circuit. The desirability of this characteristic will naturally vary according to the metallurgical requirement in each case. Because screen separations make a sharper division according to particle size, the products of screen circuits can be expected to show greater crowding of particles near the point of separation. These changes in product characteristics are so important that other factors, both in the grinding and concentration processes must be adjusted if the operator is to take full advantage of the increased tonnages and higher efficiencies available to him through the use of the screen circuit. One factor that too often is overlooked when changing to screen circuits is the importance of adjusting the ball-mill or rod-mill charge, to compensate for: (I) increased tonnage of new feed, (2) decreased circulating load, or (3) more granular character of feed. These same factors should also be taken into consideration for their effect on the various types of concentration or flotation equipment that may follow the screen circuit. Over a period of years, this equipment has generally been designed and adjusted to the product of the classifier, therefore it seems obvious that some research on the adjustment and adaptation of concentrating and flotation equipment to screen-circuit products will be most profitable to the operators. To illustrate the points mentioned above, the results from three recent installations follow, with data on the comparative characteristics of screen and classifier circuits. A range of separation from 10 to 48 mesh has been chosen, using two general types of screening equipment and two types of classifiers. The first of the installations of which the results are to be examined is that of an iron-ore installation where eastern magnetite was being concentrated prior to sintering. Prof. Henry Lours, of Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, a distinguished member of this Institute and other technical societies, has recently sent to the Institution of Mining Engineers, and to the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, in Great Britain, a communication, the substance of which is as follows : Professor Louis calls attention to the absence of any recognized English term for the definite description of a frequent phenomenon—namely,the oblique position of an ore-body in the plane in which it lies. In this connection, Professor Louis says that in America the term " pitch " has been occasionally applied to this relation, and proposes that, in the literature of ore-deposits, it shall be hereafter restricted to this particular meaning, the angle of the pitch, like that of the dip, being always measured from the horizontal, and the dip being always taken at right angles to the strike, while the pitch is taken on the plane of the dip, in the direction of the strike. Thus, for example, in a vein or bed striking N-S., and dipping, say, 45' E., there might be an ore-body, the axis of which pitched northward, at an angle of 45O below the horizontal line, as measured on the plane of the inclosing vein or bed. If' the term " pitch " had this universally recognized meaning, the situation could be simply and perfectly expressed by its use, in connection with the general data of strike and dip. As Professor Louis says: "This suggestion has a certain practical value, and is not merely academic. Every mining engineer of practical experience in such types of ore-deposit will have met with cases, in which a vertical shaft has been sunk with the object of cutting the deposit, but has missed it, because the dip alone has been taken into account, while the pitch has been overlooked." In a former paper laid before the Institute, entitled Lead and Silver Smelting in Chicago, I endeavored to give a description of the manner in which argentiferous lead ores from the far West were treated in that city, and also described the method employed in the desilverization of the silver-lead produced from the ores. It will perhaps be remembered, that very siliceous ores, principally from the Emma mine, Utah, containing over 40 per cent. of silicic acid, were then being treated at the works of the Chicago Silver Smelting and Refining Company in the reverberatory furnace, with the use of metallic iron, in the form of borings, as a precipitating medium for the lead ; and that the extraction of the silver from the resulting bullion was effected by the Balbach process. The Swansea Works, also the works at Brighton, just outside of this city, and those of S. P. Lunt, were at that time treating ore of a similar character by the same method. The inadequacy of the process for the ores then under treatment was, in a manner, pointed out by me in the paper above referred to. Since the time of its writing, many and important improvements have been made in the metallurgical treatment of western ores in Chicago. Most ores are now roasted previous to reduction, and the latter operation is conducted in the shaftfurnace instead of the reverberatory. Such is the fact at least at the Swansea Works, the largest in the city, and here it was where the first steps were taken in this direction. In selecting these works as the subject of this paper, I am in hopes that the description given of the varions metallurgical operations, as they are there now conducted, will serve to give an idea of the improvements introduced

Economics has been defined as the useful application of wealth or material resources. The search of alchemists in the Middle Ages for s formula by which base metals might be transmuted into gold was no more intensive than has been the search by all branches of the oil industry for methods whereby the rnatcrial resources of West Texas in the nature of sulfur-bearing oil might be usefully applied. The purpose of this paper is to present in brief space developments that are conceded to possess economic significance. History The first discovery of oil in commercial quantities in the Permian Basin of West Texas was the Westbrook field in Mitchell County in 1920. Three years later the discovery well in the Big Lake field was cornpleted as a small pumper (70 bbl.) at a depth of 3028 ft. In 1925, discovery of the Powell or World pool in Crockett County stimulated activities in the Permian Basin, further establishing the importance of the Permian limestones as sources of production. The years 1925 and 1926 were marked by a period of extensive leasing and drilling activities. At the close of 1926 more than 7,000,000 acres had been leased and discovery wells completed in the Hurdle, Hendricksand Yates fields, definitely establishing the importance of the Permian Basin as a source of production from free-flowing wells. Review of Fields The producing fields in the Permian Basin are grouped on three distinct lines of folding. These may be separately identified as the Big Lake-Powell fold; the Yates, Hurdle, and Church-McElroy area and the Winkler County development. Production is derived from a porous limestone stratigraphically uniform, encountered at depths varying from 900 to 3100 ft. This paper presents the ingredients composing a type of oil-base mud that has been successfully used in drilling oil horizons in California, the effect of ingredient concentrations on physical properties, methods of handling at the well and possible advantages of a waterless drilling fluid with excellent plastering properties. INTRODUCTION AN oil-base mud is a rotary drilling fluid in which oil has been substituted for water as the principal liquid ingredient. In recent years such a mud has been developed and used successfully for drilling the oil horizons of wells in various California fields. There are several types of oil-base mud, but only the type that is currently used to any appreciable extent will be considered at this time. The oil-base drilling-mud compositions used by Shell Oil Company, Incorporated have been covered by several patent applications on which patents are expected to issue at an early date. The purpose of this paper is to present data on the fundamental design of the mud; the ingredients used and their specifications; the effect of ingredient concentration on physical properties; the selection of the proper mud; the facilities needed for handling the mud; and a general discussion [oil] drilling with oil-base mud. In view of the early stage of development of oil-base mud, the great number of variables, and the almost unlimited possible combinations of these variables, which in turn require extensive laboratory study, there are certain irregularities and omissions in the data presented here. However, it is believed that sufficient data are at hand to permit a fairly complete analysis of the characteristics of oil-base muds. In view of the excellent plastering properties of oil-base mud when properly proportioned, its use should: (I) minimize the possibility of impairing the natural flow potentialities of the producing horizon such as that resulting from infiltration of water from water-base muds; (2) permit smaller clearances for setting liners, since the mud sheath has no appreciable thickness; (3) eliminate the possibility of clogging the perforations of the liner with thick mud sheath; (4) facilitate the removal of the mud sheath from the walls of the hole, for its mud sheath has no appreciable strength; (5) assist in drilling through formations, such as "heaving shale," where water wetting appears to be a source of difficulty. (6) permit cores to be obtained without contamination from drilling water. FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN OF AN OIL-BASE MUD In the design of any rotary drilling mud it is necessary to select materials that will fulfill the following requirements: (I) act as the liquid medium and regulate the viscosity; (2) impart initial and final plastering properties; (3) give gel strength and structure in order to prevent settling; (4) serve as a weighting material. A model of the slag-fuming process for recovery of zinc oxide fume from lead blast furnace slags, adapted to solution by a digital computer, is presented. The model incorporates the variaticm with time of the following: the fuming of zinc and lead, the change in the ferrous-ferric ratio in the slag, the transfer of sulfur to and from the slag, the temperature of the liquid slag, the temperature of the gases and fume which exit to the flue, the heat losses to the water jackets, and the amount of frozen slag on the water jackets. The assumptions which underlie the model-some of which are but crude approximations—are discussed. Despite some obvious shortcomings, the model simulates faithfully many of the important features of practical slag-fuming operations. The behavior of the model is compared with the operation of the American Smelting and Refining Co. fumzace at El Paso, Tex. The model is used to predict the effects on performance of changes in the coal rate, the temperature of the secondary air, and the composition of the coal. THE fuming of lead blast furnace slag for recovery of zinc oxide is standard practice today, and it has been the subject of several previous attempts at mathematical process analysis.'-' The mathematical process model described in this paper incorporates many of the features from the earlier studies, but it is a far more complete and realistic representation of the commercial process in that the following additional features have been included: the fuming of lead as well as zinc; the transfer of sulfur between slag and gas; the addition of slag feed in batches, over a period of time; tapping of the final slag over a period of time; the change of slag temperature with time. The additional features of the present model add greatly to the mathematical complexity, but this difficulty has been obviated by programming the model for solution by a digital computer. The IBM 7094 computer solves the model for one operating cycle of the fuming furnace in less than 1 min. It is doubtful if the same calculations could be completed with the aid of a desk calculator in less than a month. The computer program, written in the Fortran IV language, is too lengthy for presentation here.* Instead, this paper As shown in the sections which follow, it does simulate with remarkable faithfulness most of the known behavior of the industrial process. On the other hand, the model contains several gross simplifications of both the chemistry and heat balance, necessitated by the lack of more exact knowledge. In addition to these known weaknesses, it is not unlikely that those more intimately acquainted with industrial practice than the author will find other additions to or modifications of the model which will improve its utility and reliability. CHEMISTRY In brief outline, the present model treats the fuming furnace as two units, A and B, in series. In A the batch of slag reacts with the continuous stream of air (primary and secondary) and fuel injected at the tuyeres, to produce a stream of hot, reduced gases containing zinc vapor. The zinc content of both the slag and the product gas changes with time because of the batch nature of the process. Unit A is called the "lower furnace" in this paper; physically, it is considered to be that part of the fuming furnace which lies below the charge port. In B, the "upper furnace", the product gas from A is burned with the stream of "tertiary" air, to produce zinc oxide fume. The performance of B also depends on time because of the time dependence inherited from the product gas of A. The rate behavior in the lower furnace determines the important features of the process—the rate of elimination of zinc and lead from the slag, and the amount of fuel required for this purpose. Bell, Turner, and peters' published the first useful model of the lower furnace. They employed the assumption that, at any instant of time, the slag and reduced gas reach a state of equilibrium, according to the reactions: They cited only indirect evidence in support of their assumption of slag-gas equilibrium, yet several more recent laboratory studies of the activity of zinc oxide in slags4-8 have produced evidence which supports their view. On first acquaintance it seems unlikely that a high-output "rate" process like slag fuming would even approach an equilibrium state. The author, in an earlier study,' established, however, that the gas-slag interface in a fuming furnace was capable of such high mass-transfer rates that a close approach to equilibrium between gas and slag was quite probable. In devising the present model it was decided to assume a state of equilibrium between slag and gas at the outset, and then to modify this assumption as necessary in order to make the model agree with the be -havior of the actual process. A graphic method was developed which can be used to predict the tendency of oil field waters to precipitate calcium Sulfate under a variety of conditions. Application of this method is made to the prediction of sulfate scale formation in heater treaters. boilers. oil wells. cooling systems and water injection wells. INTRODUCTION A solution may be said to be in equilibrium with respect to a given salt when the concentration of that silt in equal to its solubility. If for any reason the concentration of the salt is increased or its solubility decreased. the equilibrium is upset and precipitation of the salt takes place. Thus, if the concentration of a salt in a particular solution is known and its solubility can be calculated for a given set of conditions, the tendency of this salt to form a precipitate under these conditions can be predicted. Based on these principles a method has been developed for determining the tendency of oil field waters to form calcium Sulfate precipitates under various conditions. THE SOLUBILITY DIAGRAM Calcium sulfate precipitation most frequently occurs when two waters are mixed: one containing calcium ions. and the other sulfate ions. As one of these waters is added to the other a point may be reached where the concentration of calcium Sulfate is greater than its solubility. thus causing the formation of a precipitate. The solubility diagram is a graphic device for determining the location of such points, thereby making possible a prediction of the tendency of such a system to deposit sulfate scale. A similar diagram can be used to solve many other problems involving the precipitation of calcium sulfate. Fig. 1 shows a solubility diagram representing the mixing of two waters. Water "A" contains a high concentration of odium, magnesium, and sulfate ions together with a small amount of calcium. Water "B" contains a high concentration of calcium ions together with sodium, magnesium and a small amount of sulfate ions. During the year 1928 ten new producing areas have been discovered and several extensions in oil and gas fields have been found in southwestern Texas. This year, however, will reveal itself as one of small profits in spite of considerable increase in production for the area as a whole over the previous years. At the beginning of 1928 the fields in this area (Fig. 1) were producing a daily average of 7500 bbl. from 730 wells, whereas at the close of the year the daily average had increased to approximately 14,000 bbl. from 827 wells. Production for the year was 3,453,938 bbl. The total oil produced in Southwest Texas since its discovery has been 16,955,-388 barrels. (Table 1.)

YOU can place an exclamation point after the "and How" if you want to, but the way it stands it sum¬marizes the Mining Geology sessions quite nicely; "Why" in the morning, "How" in the afternoon. It is altogether fitting that Prof. McLaughlin and Reno Sales, who have themselves achieved enviable reputations in company work, should have led the program by presenting informally a chapter from the volume dedicated to the beloved dean of all economic geologists, Waldemar Lindgren. In opening the morning session, over which Sydney Ball presided, Donald McLaughlin emphasized the continuous role mining geology should play in operating technique. He pointed out the importance of structural relations in a broad sense, and the preponderant role they play in developing the manner of ore occurrences. He illustrated this by an account of the work at Homestake, using slides to show the stratigraphic sequence, the folding, and the orebodies of that camp. An interesting piece of detail was the distinction they found could be made be¬tween the chlorite near the ore masses, and that in the country rocks. Whether the cummingtonite, characteristic of the rock in which the ore is found, is of regional or of contact metamorphic origin caused some discussion. Dr. Lindgren inclined to the belief that it was contact, but L. C. Graton replied that they had found the weight of evidence was for a hydrothermal origin. D. F. Hewett raised the question as to whether, in the advancing development of the mining industry, there was still a place for the U. S. Survey geologist, and the consensus seemed to be that there should be. His role is changing from that of mapping mining districts in detail, now the task of the companies, towards a more general serving of the industry through the wider perspective his work gives him in contradistinction to the greater detail of knowledge accumulated by the resident geologist.

AN increase of 18 per cent in the production and consumption of all metals last year was readily met by the mines, but more than an average amount of development work was made necessary. Mining methods were improved appreciably; open-pit operations ad¬vanced more than underground practice: and the transportation phase of mining progressed to a greater extent than the other related functions. A new belt-conveyor system of mining was placed in operation at the Spruce open-pit iron ore mine at Eveleth, Minn. The gathering portion of the belt system was installed beneath the surface of the open pit, following closely the bottom rock, in especially provided drifts; beyond it inclined upward to the surface and finally discharged into a 500-ton shipping pocket. Length of the belt was 4500 ft. net vertical lift 386 ft. and capacity 750 long tons per hour. The mined ore found its way to the belt through one of three vertical raises, whose horizontal section was 10 by 10 ft. Each raise was equipped with a grizzly, crusher, pan-type feeder, and auxiliary equipment. Transportation of the ore from the working faces of the pit was accomplished as follows: (1) Two raises were equipped with tower and anchor stations, 3-cu.yd. drag scrapers, and related power units; (2) the remaining raise was provided with electrically driven power shovels and 20-ton trucks mounted on pneumatic tires. The development of large diameter rotary drilling techniques and equipment in the last nine years has been the main factor for the rapid advancement made by this method of shaft construction. In 1959, less than 5000 ft of large diameter hole was drilled in the United States for the mining and construction industries. By 1967, large diameter hole footage had increased to 117,000 ft. Part of the increase in footage for holes drilled represents AEC requirements due to the discontinuance of atmospheric testing of nuclear devices. The increase in footage for holes drilled for the mining industry can be attributed to cost savings of shaft construction by rotary methods as compared to conventional blasting methods. Until the late 1950's most large diameter holes were drilled with positive displacement rig pumps or air compressors, direct mud or air circulation, conventional sized oil well drilling strings, and multipass reaming techniques. In some very soft formations it was possible to run a pilot bit with one or more hole openers in tandem to drill the hole in a single pass. The main problem with single pass drilling using tandem hole openers was in providing sufficient circulation fluid for proper hole cleaning through conventional sized drill pipe.

INTRODUCTION A small, independent mining enterprise (SIME) is an independently owned and operated business concern engaged primarily in mineral development, from the exploration to the production stage. By definition, a SIME is not dominant in its field and has no long-term financial backing. It is not a major producer of minerals, nor is it a petroleum company, a government organization or a subsidiary of such organizations. A SIME may or may not be listed on stock exchanges. The SIME is also called small miner, junior mining company, speculative mining company, and penny-stock mining company. The survival and growth of a SIME is most often controlled by an independently minded entrepreneur, who not only conceives and carries out new projects, but is materially affected by the success or failure of these projects. Usually, a SIME does not have a large or constant cash flow. Such a lack of long-term financial backing forces the SIME to meet the challenge of finding capital for its activities on a step-by-step basis. Its survival strategy is thus based on finding funds at the right time, of the right type and in the right quantities. The purpose of this paper is to show that the type of venture in which a SIME is involved affects the difficulty of raising new capital and the choice of possible sources of funds. The Small, Independent Mining Enterprise (SIME) The SIME is not a figment of the imagination of financial speculators. In Canada, there are more than 1,800 small mineral enterprises which spend on the average less than $1,000,000 per year on activity which is directed at bringing forth new mineral supply. In the United States, 64% of the non-fuel mining operations are conducted by nine or fewer men, and the coal industry is characterized by several thousand smaller independent producers, still predominantly family owned or controlled. In Chile, 80% of the mines can be classified as small mines. In the Philippines, approximately 60% of metal mining operations are classified as small mines. The SIME is actively engaged in mining all over the world, and very much so in the Pacific Rim. The Mineral Supply Process The whole process of bringing forth new mineral supply involves a dynamic sequence of activities, ranging from the initial exploration for a mineral occurrence to the production of a marketable product. A typical sequence is outlined in Figure 1. At the grass-roots exploration stage, a series of geological, geophysical and geochemical tests is aimed at locating a mineral occurrence. Especially in the early phases of such activities, the uncertainty (risk) surrounding a venture is high, since only general geological information exists on which to base a judgement of the economic viability of the venture. Such risk is attractive to few investors. As the information-gathering process continues, uncertainty diminishes. Once exploration efforts result in the discovery of a mineral occurrence, i.e. when indications of mineralization and mineable widths are obtained by drilling, there is still uncertainty concerning the extent of mineralization and the probability of having located an economic mineral deposit. The expected return on investment at such a stage may well be negative but the slight possibility of a very high positive return will make a number of financial sources available to an exploration company. INTRODUCTION DURING the past several years the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture and the ductility values often can be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging. The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established beyond reasonable doubt that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary abnormal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, the Steel Founders' Society of America has, since Nov. 1, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-ductility effects and porosity. In order that these investigations might proceed on a quantitative basis, hydrogen analyses of a precision considerably higher than any previously reported in the literature were necessary. The method chosen was selected entirely on the basis that it had the highest probability of freedom from uncontrollable errors and will be described in detail in another publication.1 Briefly, the method used consisted of the hot extraction of solid pieces of steel weighing from 45 to 50 g in a highly evacuated quartz tube maintained at 1050°C (1925°F) for a period 0f approximately 40 hr. The greatest precautions were taken to eliminate blanks and insure a sound gas-collection system. Vacuum and temperature conditions were maintained automatically. On the basis of metallographic analysis, incipient melting data, thermal analysis work, and X-ray diffraction, phase relationships in the 0 to 50 atomic pct Cr region were carefully resolved. Phase relationships in the 50 to 100 atomic pct region were outlined. A single intermediate phase, ZrCr,, was established in the system. A eutectic and a eutectoid were found in the zirconium-rich region of the system, while a eutectic was located in the chromium-rich region. Limited solubility of chromium in both a and a zirconium was observed. THIS is another in a series of papers on zirconium-base binary phase diagrams based on a program sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission. The Zr-Sn,' Zr-Si,' and Zr-Mo and Zr-W" systems have already been published. Previous work on the Zr-Cr system includes a partial diagram by Hayes, Roberson, and Davies' and a complete diagram by McQuillan." The phase relationships reported by these authors were determined with magnesium-reduced zirconium, whereas those reported herein are based on iodide metal. Some X-ray work on the intermediate phase in this system was also reported by Hayes et al., as well as by Wallbaum.' Comparisons with these data are made in the appropriate sections. Thermal analysis, metallographic and incipient melting techniques were employed to accurately resolve phase relationships in the 0 to 50 atomic pct Cr region, while the remainder of the diagram is outlined on a basis of cast structures and thermal analysis. A description and analyses of the metals used in the preparation of alloys for this study are included in Table I. A "low-hafnium" zirconium crystal bar (Westinghouse "Grade 3") was used. This material was produced by the decomposition of a volatile iodide onto a hot zirconium filament. The as-received crystal bar was coated with corrosion product from a standard autoclave test by which its grade designation is determined. A sand-blasting and subsequent HF-HNO, pickling treatment was employed to remove this contamination. The bars were cold-rolled to approximately 1/32-in. sheet, pickled again, sheared to 1/4-in. squares, washed with acetone, and stored for use. Ingot chromium metal from National Research Corp. and electrolytic chromium flakes from Johnson, Matthey and Co., Ltd., were available as alloy additions. The ingot chromium was received in granular form. The large granules were sized by crushing, treated for iron removal, rinsed with acetone, and stored. The flakes were broken to approximately 1/8 in. with mortar and pestle, cleaned with acetone, and stored for charging. Experimental Procedure A nonconsumable electrode arc furnace identical to that described by Hansen, Kessler, and McPher-son,' was used in this work. A 400 amp dc welding generator was the source of power. To insure homogeneity, ingots were melted in a water-cooled spun copper crucible, a total of four times without opening the furnace. No difficulties were encountered in the preparation of these binary alloys. Analyzed chromium contents were found to agree very well with the intended content. Melts of pure zirconium were interspersed in the course of preparing the alloys and their hardness was measured to keep a constant check on the melting technique. Vycor and quartz bulbs were used to contain the samples for isothermal annealing treatments. Vycor bulbs were employed for temperatures up to 110O°C, while quartz was used above this temperature. For treatments up to 950°C the bulbs were evacuated before sealing, but for higher temperatures a partial pressure of argon was admitted to the
