Hukki (Finland Institute of Technology, Helsinki, Finland)—In the analysis of mill products containing minerals of appreciable difference in specific gravity the well-known principle of the method described by Stanley is applied in a number of ways for a variety of problems. The use of Le Chatelier bottle as explained in the paper may be a dependable and sufficiently accurate way, although no information is given as to the reproducibility of the specific gravity determinations. In the case of MacIntyre ore the method is applied for three separate products produced apparently without reagents and relatively free of fine slimes. Should it be applied for flotation products carrying a substantial amount of slimes, difficulties should be anticipated in the process of eliminating air inclusions from the sample. The difficulties mentioned above may be overcome by the use of a volumeter, an instrument designed for specific gravity determinations of finely divided solids in dry state. This instrument, see Fig. 4, is manufactured by F. Süffert-Bürner A. G. in Basel, Switzerland. Its operation is based on the law of Boyle and Mariotte. With the use of the volumeter, the specific gravities of test samples having a total volume of about 30 cm are easily reproducible within ±2 units in the second decimal of the specific gravity figure, and even better than that with utmost care. This accuracy is sufficient for ordinary operational control. How closely the specific gravity determinations follow the respective chemical assays depends primarily on the nature of the sample itself. In this respect no specific gravity instrument can give better results than those justified by the consistency of mineral distribution in samples analyzed.

The in situ deformability of a closely jointed basalt rock mass was determined by two different methods: the NX-borehole jack method where displacements of opposing curved platens were related to applied hydraulic pressures, and the modified Goodman jack method where tangential strains on the borehole walls were related to induced tangential stresses. The modulus obtained by the modified Goodman jack method were much higher than those obtained by the NX-borehole jack method. To explain the discrepancy, the influence of fractures and test variables, such as depth, orientation, hole location, and applied pressure on the calculated modulus of the rock mass, were analyzed by factorial analysis. It was found that the orientations and measurement depths have statistically significant effects. The in situ deformability values obtained by nonlinear regression analysis were also found comparable with other measurements and empirically predicted values for the basalt rock mass.

The effect of various plastics upon the permeability of a sand and the mechanism of their ensuring permeability within the consolidated sand body is discussed. Data are presented on various properties of the plastic materials used in sand consolidation and the effect of temperature and usable temperature ranges are considered. The recovery of petroleum from uncon-solidated sands presents serious production problems, owing to sloughing of the formation. The solution of some of these problems usually has been by mechanical methods.' The ideal way of controlling the sloughing tendencies of these un consolidated formations, however, is to prevent the movement of the individual sand grains by the use of a bonding medium. A step in the desired direction was taken by Irons and Stcesser2 when they taught the use of liquid plastics to produce a consolidating deposit that prevents sloughing. More recently, Wrightsman and Buckley3 proposed a modification of this process. In this use of the liquid plastic, the sand grains become coated and the ensuing hardening of the plastic by polymerization or condensation cements together the sand Particles. Liquid plastics that have been suggested for this Purpose are of the following types: phenolformaldehyde, alkyd resins, vinyl type resins, polystyrene and the acrylic esters. When the flow of fluids through a sand must not be materially reduced, it is essential only to cement together the sand grains with liquid plastic and leave a portion of the interstitial space for fluid flow. TO be assured of obtaining fluid flow through the sand interstices after injection of plastic, it has been necessary in the past to remove the excess plastic from the interstices between the particles before it sets. Wrightsman and Buckley suggest two methods for the removal of the excess plastic from the interstices of the sand: (I) to flush the excess plastic back into the formation, away from the well bore, by use of oil or water; (2) to produce the well before the plastic has set, thereby moving the excess plastic into the well bore. Under certain well conditions it is very difficult to remove the excess plastic from all parts of the formation by either of these methods and leave the formation consolidated with no sections completely sealed. The method* described herein of retaining permeability within a sand body is to use a liquid plastic that upon setting ensures permeability within the consolidated sand body. This cements the sand grains but obviates the need for removing plastic from the interstices of the sand. One of the ways of accomplishing this is to use a liquid plastic that occupies a considerably greater volume than the solidified resin it yields on further polymerization or condensation in situ. THE absence of a convenient glossary of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copp, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. The labor bestowed upon this paper since its presentation at the Lake Superior meeting has considerably exceeded that of its first preparation, as may be inferred from its great increase in length, as well as the numerous alterations which it has undergone. It could certainly be still further enlarged and improved; but I think a comparison of it with any of the glossaries of the same class now in print will show, at least, that it is an advance upon what has hitherto been accomplished. 1 shall be grateful, however, for further criticisms and suggestions; and I purpose at some future time to incorporate in a supplementary paper the results of such additional collections or corrections as I may obtain. To avoid too great prolixity, I adopted at the outset the following general principles: 1. To include the most important technical words and phrases used by American miners and metallurgists, or occurring in English books and periodicals.

In commonly used to prepare the surface of the mineral to be floated so that attachment to air takes place. The quantity of agent required to make the mineral hydrophobic is usually very small, of the order of 0.1 to 0.25 lb per ton of mineral. Details of the mechanism of pyrite collection are for the most part unsettled. Adsorption of collector has long been believed to involve an ion exchange mechanism as demonstrated for galena' and for chalcocite. In the work on chalcocite it was also demonstrated that a film of xanthate radicals unleachable in solvents that dissolve alkali xanthates, copper xanthate, or dixanthogen was formed at the surface of the mineral. The unleachable product increased with increasing addition of xanthate up to a maximum corresponding to an oriented monolayer of xanthate radicals. Pyrite is extremely floatable with xanthate if its surface is fresh,,' but the floatability decreases rapidly as oxide coatings increase in abundance. Pyrite shows zero contact angle when in contact with ethyl xanthate solution at pH higher than about 10.5; at neutrality. a contact angle of 60° is obtained at a reagent concentration of 25 mg per liter. Alkali sulfides and cyanides are pyrite depressants.

Mine-run ore is received at Vitro in gondola cars and fed directly to a Cedar Rapids impact crusher. Following screening, the undersize travels through a recently installed three-stage sampling plant where successive cuts are executed by conventional Geary-Jennings type cutters to produce a final sample of 1 lb per ton of raw ore fed. Crushed ore is transported to one of three storage silos or to stockpile, depending upon grade and type of amen- ability. This permits the blending of a mill feed with some degree of consistency. Final grinding is accomplished in one of two closed circuit ball mill-classifier systems allowing simultaneous processing of two basic types of ores. High acid consumers may be leached separately in the required environment. Part of the free acid remaining can then be utilized by an ore stream entering later whose component ores require much less free acid for leaching.

Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type.1 Prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied.

Members of the Society of Mining Engineers may well regard it as rather unusual that a paper on this subject is being presented by someone whose first taste of mining came at the age of 60 or so - someone who last heard of cathodes and anodes in 1938. On the other hand, the title does refer to the financing of a mine and at least I can claim to have spent all my business life since the war until 1981 in the world of banking, though this inevitably means that I have been used to looking at these and other problems through what you might regard as the wrong end of the telescope. The lending of money, and more particularly the provision of finance for commerce and industry, is the central job of a banker and I have been involved in this in various ways over many years, but regrettably only very marginally in the world of mining. As you will see from what follows, the rather specialised form of finance which RTZ required was, to my regret, not provided by the British banking community since the great majority of the finance came from American banks and, to a lesser extent, from German banks. I am most indebted to Mr. Roy Wright for a great deal of the nuts and bolts in this paper. He was one of the three central figures in the growth and expansion of RTZ during the 1950's and 1960's and was right at the centre of the negotiations with bankers, with governments and with many others. The going, as you will see, was far from easy. The essential basis for the financing of each of the RTZ group's mining projects was a firm long-term sales contract for sufficient of the output of the particular mine to produce the cash flow necessary to service the loans. Wherever possible, loans were raised in the same currency as the sales contracts were made. Each sales contract was designed to give the customer the product he wanted with a long-term assurance of supply and at the same time to give the bankers the protection they required. Thus the marketing concept and the financing concept for a particular mine formed one overall plan, and talks with the customers and the bankers were conducted in parallel until a satisfactory marketing/financial package was agreed in principle. Preliminary talks were begun soon after the discovery of a potentially viable orebody. As confidence about a discovery increased, customers were persuaded to enter into contingent sales contracts before the very detailed and costly business of the economic and technical feasibility study of the mine was launched; such a study might cost 10% or more of the estimated total capital cost. At the same time provisional understandings were reached with the bankers. The contingent sales contracts usually gave a period of grace of eighteen months to two years, during which time the decision whether or not to continue with the mine had to be made. This decision rested mainly on the result of the feasibility study and also on coming to a firm agreement with the bankers. If all went well and the mine went ahead, then the contingent sales contracts became firm, but they fell away if the decision was negative. The Company was fortunate that during the whole period when its major mines were being developed, world trade was increasing rapidly and Japan was becoming a dominant industrial power. The Japanese supported many of the mines, including Hamersley Iron Ore, Lornex Copper, Bougainville Copper to name a few, with the basic long-term sales contracts that enabled their development. The Germans supported Palabora and to a lesser extent Bougainville. The mines were financed as individual projects generally with a loan/equity ratio of about 65/35, without legal recourse to RTZ for the loans. RTZ was, however, responsible for providing any capital overruns required to bring the mines into commercial operations. Nevertheless, the RTZ management regarded itself as morally responsible to the lenders because, Palabora aside, the sales contracts had either a fixed selling price (like Hamersley), an indexed price (like the Elliot Lake Uranium Mines and Mary Kathleen), or a floor price (as in Lornex, Bougainville and Rossing). The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to Mining and Metallurgy and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes, It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. J. V. W. Reynders is chairman of the Endowment Committee. Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund THE Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, consisting of $100,000, was given the Institute in 1929 by the family of Colonel Mudd who had served the Institute as Director, Vice-president and on many important committees. His long career of distinguished professional and public service is fittingly commemorated by this fund. The income is available for support of research and other special purposes. In view of Colonel Mudd's life work with the nonferrous metals and his keen interest in the younger men of the profession it is purposed to apply the fund particularly to the benefit of these two. Control of income is exercised by the Board of Directors on recommendation of a Committee consisting of the President and Secretary, ex officiis, together with three others selected by the Board. The Committee consists at present of the following members: W. H. Bassett, President; H. Foster Bain, Secretary; Harvey S. Mudd serving until October, 1931; Edgar Rickard serving till October, 1932; George Otis Smith serving until October, 1933. On recommendation of this Committee the Board has authorized as a first project the preparation of a series of small books designed especially to be helpful to the Junior Members. These are now being written and it is hoped will be available for distribution in 1931. The list includes: A Brief History of American Mining, by T. A. Rickard; Mining Costs, Why and What, by Arthur Notman; Introduction to Mineral Economics, by H. Foster Bain and T. T. Read; Choice of Methods—A Record of Experience in Making Decisions, with chapters by W. H. Bassett, F. W. Bradley, E. DeGolyer, Howard N. Eavenson, A. B. Parsons, J. V. W. Reynders, L. D. Ricketts, Robert E. Tally, Pope Yeatman and others. One other book is projected but final selection has not been made. A technique is presented by which well samples and core plugs of dolomite formations are classified by microscopic examination into seven different porosity grades. Quantitative values of porosity and permeability are determined for each grade by a statistical correlation of the core plug test data with the porosity grading system. These quantitative values are applied directly to the grades exhibited in the well samples for the purpose of estimating the reservoir void space for wells that were not cored. The procedure is described for estimating the gas reserves per unit area lor the South Hugoton gas field. but a reserve estimate for the field is not given. INTRODUCTION The miscroscopic examination of well sample; and the graphic recording of their lithologic qualities and other distinguishing characteristics of various geologic formations drilled is both a science and an art of long standing and wide application. Usually the primary objective of a geologist who "sits on the well" and examines the samples are: to identify the formation being drilled, determine the total depth, casing point. and completion interval. In most cases the porosity is described. if done at all, in general terms. such as: trace, scattered, fine, poor, fair, medium. good, excellent, or in some other relative terms. In fields where various geologists have examined samples and recorded observations on many wells considerable variations in lithologic terms and porosity descriptions occur unless there is primary effort to establish uniformity of logging observations and standards of recording observable porosity. When an estimate of the pore volume of a reservoir is made a geologic concept of the processes that control the magnitudes of porosity and permeability is developed by microscopic examination of well samples. The characeristics and appearances are then mentally related to rather general quantitative units of porosity based on physical core data from the same reservoir or on such data or experience in other reservoirs that have similar qualities. The reliability of such estimates depends largely on the variations of the lithology of the formations, the geometric properties of its void system. the extent of comparisons of sample appearances with porosity data, as well as the uniform recording of all relevant characteristics. This statement is particularly significant for dolo-mitized limestone formations of substantial thicknesses and heterogeneity such as the Permian Dolomites of the Hugoton gas field. Jn this field, as well as in most of the Permian Dolomite fields, the producing formations are of relatively great thicknesses in which the porosity and permeability of the reservoir varies substantially in all directions, depending on the crystalline structure. degree and kind of impurities, kind of fossils anti cementation thereof, degree of dissolution. and fracturing. The variations of the lithologic texture of the dolomites and post deposition alterations have resulted in porosities and permeabilities of such magnitudes that only a part of the gross thickness can be counted as "pay." At the time of this study insufficient gas production had been experienced to apply the pressure decline production method in the South Hugoton Field and the electric logs are not definitive enough. The problem of estimating gas reserves in the south part of the Hugoton Field is primarily one of determining the pay thickness and porosity from well samples and core data. The area studied embraced all that part of the field lying south of an east-west line through Guvmon, Okla., anti containing approximately 1.000,000 acres. This paper describes a technique of correlation of physical core data with well samples so that quantitative values of pay thickness, porosity. Permeability, and connate water may be assigned to well samples that are representative of a given interval, and thereby permitting the estimation of gas reserves lor a given unit area. The procedure was developed by a uniform microscopic qualitative porosity grading of the dolo. mite core plugs.. and relating these grades to the respective physical core data on a statistical basis The well sample-were also graded in a Similar manner in order that the quantitative values established lor the core plugs could be applied to the well Sample for wells that were not cored. GRADING OF DOLOMITE A group of experienced geologists was given the assignment of examining the samples on all wells in South Hugoton in order that they could log their observations in a uniform and standardized manner and grade the observed porosity so that it could be related quantitatively to the core data. The group initiated the study 011 chips from cores which bad been tested for porosity and permeability. This study continued until all of the geologists developed a common knowledge of lithologic terms and of the characteristic appearances of the samples and their relations to measured porosity. The characteristic appearances of the dolomite samples under twelve-power magnification as related to their qualitative porosities afforded a classification of the dolomite into :even grades of porosity, ranging from dolomite of no-visible porosity under twelve-power magnification to dolomite of excellent porosity. The assigned grade for a specific 10-ft interval is a weighted average of all visible grades of porosity exhibited by the cuttings representing that interval. The porosity characteristics were recorded by a color graph adjacent to the lithology column in conjunction with a numerical system for further definition of relative porosity as shown in Fig. 1. The three vertical lines to the right of the lithology column each represent 33 1/3 per cent. which lines were used to record the percentage of the samples, for any particular interval. that showed porosity under the microscope. The colors were used to denote actual pore size. i.e., orange. blue and I-ed for pore diameter of one-fourth or less. one-fourth to one-Ilalf. and greater than one-half millimeter, respectively. The positions of twin reflections in electron-dijjcraction patterns obtained from thin metal foils may he calculated for any twin in any crystal structure by means of an elementary application of vector algebra, General equations for the four classical orientation relationships are presented using the superscript and subscript notation of the tensor calculus, which is briefly described. As an example of the application of these expressions, the case of twinned rhomhohedral crystals, and hence as a special cased twinned cubic crystals, is examined. CONSIDERABLE interest has recently been shown in the interpretation of electron-diffraction patterns obtained from twinned regions of thin metal foils. In the present paper, it is shown that the necessary information may be obtained directly for all twins in any crystal structure by means of a very elementary application of vector algebra. The equations involved are most conveniently presented by making use of the very powerful superscript and subscript notation of the tensor calculus. The use of this notation will first be described and then applied to the problem of calculating diffraction patterns for any twinned crystal. Finally, as an example of the application of the method, the specific case of twinned rhombohedra1 crystals will be considered.

THE present paper is a progress report. on an investigation of the physical factors of oil and gas and especially of their sands, I such as-pore space, size of pores or permeability, retentivity, viscosity of the oil, temperature, pressure, thickness and area of the pay sand, water relations, and capillarity. The purpose is to determine as many of these physical factors as possible, and to ascertain the relations existing, directly or indirectly, between these physical factors and the production of oil and gas. As yet only pore space2 and size of grains of pay sands have, been investigated, although an apparatus has been designed to determine the permeability of a sand to oil, water, or gas under definite drops of pressure between the entrance face and exit face of the sample. Messrs. E. W. Shaw, R. Van A. Mills, D. Dale Condit, G. B. Richardson, G. C. Matson, and C. H. Wegemann collected the samples upon which the physical determinations were made. Acknowledgment is made to my colleagues of the United States Geological Survey for many suggestions and criticisms; to Mr. Mills for the production data given of the oil wells from which some of the samples were collected; to Mr. A. The ten years, 1879 to 1888, inclusive, have been notable in the history of iron-making for the great rise during the latter part of 1879 and the earlier half of 1880; for the maximum of production in 1882 ; for the gradual decline and the reduced product through 1883,1884 and nearly to the end of 1885; then, for the recovery through- 1886 and 1887; and the extraordinary outputs of our iron furnaces during the last three years. The price of pig-iron might be taken as an index to the condition of the iron-mining industry, and if represented graphically, they would shorn approximately parallel curves. The mining industry cannot always respond quickly to a rise in price and an increased demand for ore; nor can its production drop simultaneously with sudden falls in price of iron and of ore. Hence, the irregularities of the one are not reflected in the other. The statistics of the iron mines collected by the United States census, for the year ending June 30, 1880, exhibit admirably their condition at that time. The reports received from mine owners and managers, of the production for the year 1888, furnish the basis for a comparison and supply data for some notes on the changes in the iron-mining industry in New York which have taken place in this period of time. Recently Levine applied the Conrad-Wiedersich17 equation where H is the activation enthalpy, v the activation volume, T* the effective shear flow stress, T the absolute temperature, and ? the strain rate, to an analysis of titanium single-crystal data. The activation energy as a function of testing temperaturs obtained from specimens oriented for single (1010) prismatic slip is shown in Fig. 12. This diagram indicates a different linear dependence of H on T in the temperature interval from 220° to 300°K than from 0° to 220°K. Levine interpreted the break in this curve as indicating a change in the thermally activated mechanism controlling the flow stress. The purpose of this communication is to point out that the data in Fig. 1 is not consistent with the concept of a flow stress controlled by a simple thermally activated mechanism between 220° and 300°K. If world oil prices stabilize at $ll/bbl, if the US decides on the "accelerated supply" case for domestic fuel resources, if investment capital is available, if environmentalists' demand become reasonable, if land withdrawals are halted, if government grants generous depletion allowances and fast depreciation write-offs, and if many other "iffy" conditions are met-then shale oil production may reach the 1-million-bpd level by 1985, according to the Project Independence Report. In the "base case" scenario, oil shale production would be, at best, about 250,000 bpd at $11 prices, and "much lower if expectations for $7 oil prices prevail." In this regard, the FEA study reflects the conclusion reached by companies engaged in oil shale development work. Thus, except for some new technological breakthrough in mining, the birth and growth of the US oil shale industry will occur only if oil prices stabilize at about $ll/bbl.

That the domestic consumption of gasoline displays a marked seasonal variation, with a low in the winter and a high in the summer, is well known. It is logical to expect that the nature of the variation has itself been undergoing a change as a result of improvement in roads, general employment of closed cars, and growth of mass haulage; but so far as I am aware the change in seasonal variation has never been investigated and measured. It is the purpose of this paper to present the method and results of such an investigation, undertaken as a contribution to the technique of planning operating schedules now so prominent in connection with the functioning of the industry under a Federal quota system. AT opposite ends of a mineralized belt of northeast-southwest trend, and ten miles apart, are the Edwards and Balmat zinc minas, in St. Lawrence County, New York, west of the Adirondacks. The principal town is Gouverneur, fifteen miles west of Edwards, eight miles northwest of Balmat, and the area is often referred to as the Gouverneur district. (See Fig. 1.) At various times the district has been noted for its hematite mines, pyrite mines, and marble quarries, all now abandoned. At present, in addition to zinc, it is the country's largest source of industrial talc. A short distance to the east important magnetite mines are operating. Geologically the district lies at the southern margin of the Canadian shield, where this great expanse of Pre-Cambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks merges into the foothills of the Adirondacks. The rock formations in approximate order of areal extent and importance are as follows:
