Isothermal transformation, or "aus-tempering," of a carbon-containing aus-tenite at elevated temperatures yields so-called "intermediate products." Their structure and properties are, for a given hardness, rather different from those of "tempered martensite" obtained on conventional quenching and tempering.' Several investigators2,3 have found that for high carbon and slightly alloyed steels the intermediate products formed at temperatures close to that of the martensite reaction possess strength properties superior to those of tempered martensite. The structure of these low temperature, intermediate products is generally acicular (bainite) but clearly different from that of martensite. However, at higher austempering temperatures, between 1000 and 1300°F (540 and 700°C) carbon steels were found to exhibit a rather low ductility.4,5 Thus notch bar tensile tests showed the ratio between notch strength and regular tensile strength to decrease with increasing austempering temperature. For ductilities below a few percent this notch strength ratio is a measure of ductility, according to investigations on low alloy steels.637 Furthermore the presence of intermediate products formed unintentionally on quenching was considered as responsible for the low ductility and impact energy of some heat treated steels,8 These intermediate products could result from partial transformation at the so-called "nose-temperature" where the rate of the transformation is a maximum. Tempering improved such mixtures of martensite and intermediate products, their properties approaching those of tempered martensite of equal hardness. The following investigation constitutes an attempt to determine certain strength properties of a partially austempered and subsequently quenched low alloy steel, namely, a chromium steel (SAE 5140) The structures formed by such a treatment should consist of a mixture of intermediate products formed on austempering and a martensite formed on oil quenching from the austempering temperature. It was intended, by varying the austempering time, to vary the quantity of the intermediate products between zero and 100 pct. The austempering temperature of 860°F was selected after extensive preliminary tests close to the nose-temperature. Austempering at this temperature yielded an acicular intermediate product. .Additional tests under less exacting conditions were made for an austempering temperature of 950°F where the intermediate product appeared to be very fine pearlite. The mining and ventilating system used in development work in the Pittsburgh Seam in northern West Virginia is discussed. The seam conditions and the nature of the accompanying methane gas are described. The type of equipment and the mining cycle will be discussed, showing how they are well suited for very gaseous development work. Face ventilation in development work is possibly the fastest growing problem of the industry. The coal mines of the future will be faced with the prospect of mining from under increasing depths of cover. Consequently, larger and larger amounts of methane gas probably will be found. The Pittsburgh Seam, in northern West Virginia, is an example of an area already faced with this problem. At the present time, most of the development work being done in this seam lies beneath 500 to 1200 ft of cover. The Pittsburgh Seam in this area has always been very gassy—even near the outcrop—and the recent development work has been accompanied with extremely large volumes of gas. In many cases, a single development section has liberated in excess of 1,000,000 cfm in 24 hr. This problem of heavy gas liberation was the chief concern, several years ago, when continuous mining equipment was first considered at Christopher Coal Co. All of us were apprehensive about the liberation that would accompany rapid extraction in a single working place. However, the experience during the past few years has shown that this ability to mine only one place at a time, is actually the key to working this type of coal. With all of the mining or advancement concentrated in one place, the ventilation can also be concentrated. By this it is meant that continuous mining permits the active working place to be ventilated with a maximum amount of fresh air, taken directly from the intake source without first passing another working place. Continuous mining (and a good ventilating system) also permits a much greater concentration of attention or vigilance to the actual working place. There are two things that are very important to the mining of coal having high rates of liberation. First, adequate volumes of air are necessary. Second, and perhaps more important, a mining and ventilating system must be used that will provide an uninterrupted flow of air to every portion of the working section. Liberations of this magnitude take only a few seconds of interruption for a dangerous accumulation of gas to occur. With adequate volumes of air available, the ability to concentrate ventilation more than offsets the concentration of gas emission that is inherent with continuous mining. The mining system used with continuous mining equipment at Humphrey Mine is similar to the system used at many mines in the area for development work. This system is designed to favor ventilation, realizing that other efficiencies are meaningless if the equipment must stop because of ventilation difficulties. This plan is especially well suited to minimizing ventilation interruptions. Basically, the overall plan of mining is to develop headings into virgin coal and encircle or block out large areas. These blocks are generally at least 2000 ft sq. The purpose of this blocking out is to bleed gas from the area before pillaring. Experience has shown this method to be quite effective, even in the most gassy areas. The gas in this field seems to migrate or flow readily from the solid coal into the outside return headings of the development work. The numerous clay veins and slips that are found in the area are extremely good avenues for gas flow. A block of coal, surrounded with development headings, usually bleeds off readily; and since it is cut off from the virgin coal, it is not subject to gas migration, through the seam, from this source. However, the outside return of the encircling development work, adjacent to the virgin coal, may liberate gas for years. This liberation from the outside ribs in the virgin coal is the reason split ventilation is used in development work. If split ventilation were not used, there would, in many cases, be a serious build-up of gas in the intake before it could reach the working face. Fig. 1 shows a typical development section having seven headings. The two outside places on each side are returns, and the three center headings serve as intakes. THIS is an attempt to bring together some of the knowledge of the .coal-forming conditions obtaining during the Pennsylvanian period in the Western Interior Coal Province, to sketch briefly the present extent and character of the coals produced, and to show the beginning of cor-relation of beds over wide areas. Coals of later age than the Pennsyl-vanian are not included and, for reasons that will appear later, little attempt is made to cover the districts of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, and northern Texas is omitted entirely. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS The conditions that made possible the formation of large coal beds in the United States were most favorable in the Pennsylvanian period, formerly known as the Upper Carboniferous. The geological conditions can be determined from the records, but not the reasons for them. Preceding the Pennsylvanian was the Mississippian, formerly known as the lower Carboniferous and still later as the sub-Carboniferous. Dur-ing this time, large bodies of limestone were deposited and at the close f the Mississippian they were warped upward and for along period were eroded. Then there began a period of subsidence, more or less inter-rupted at times, during which the Pennsylvanian strata were deposited (see table on page 2). " These consist of sandstones, limestones and shales, with occasional coal beds: At the beginning of the Pennsylvanian there was subsidence, which allowed the sea to extend over the eroded Mississippian surface to the north and east, extending over eastern and central Texas, a large part of Oklahoma, with a projection into Arkansas, over Kansas and part of Nebraska, all the northern and western part of Missouri, a large part of Iowa except a strip in the north, most of Illinois, practically all of Ken-tucky, northern Tennessee, most of Indiana, all of the eastern part of Ohio, practically all of West Virginia, western Maryland, the west end of Virginia, and a large part of Pennsylvania. The only technical session on Thursday was a continuation of the Symposium on Pyrometry. The members not attending the symposium -made the trip to La Salle. They were welcomed by the Mayor, to whose speech Major Arthur S. Dwight briefly responded. After luncheon the party divided and was taken by automobile to the various chosen points of interest, such as the cement works, the various zinc smelters, the coal mines, and underground cement-rock mines, where underground steam shovels were operating, etc. A special scenic trip was arranged for the ladies. The party returned by special train to Chicago, arriving at 7:30. Those desiring to visit the coal mines at Franklin and Macoupin Coun-ties left by train that evening on a special car for Benton, and were piloted through the field by Mr. Putnam, superintendent of the Old Ben Coal Corpn., Mr. Carroll, assistant general superintendent of the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., and Carl Scholz, general manager of the Vallier Coal Co. Through the courtesy of the various railroads the visitors were furnished a special coach which took them to the various mines with the least delay and enabled them to see more than would be otherwise possible. Mines 8 and 9 of the Old Ben Coal Corpn., at West Frankfort, were first visited; thence the party proceeded to Orient mine of the Chicago; Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., where luncheon was served, and then proceeded to Vallier, where both the top and the under-ground workings were inspected. The party returned to. Benton and from there proceeded in automobiles to inspect the washery plant of the United States Fuel Co. at that point; and boarded the train reaching Chicago Saturday morning. Several left Benton for their homes without returning to Chicago.

Technology has no recognized rank in what is called polite literature; the subject-matter of engineering is not supposed to lend itself to artistic treatment; we are the hewers of wood and drawers of water to the high-priests of learning that live on the cold summit above our humbler dwellings. Therefore the hierophants smile at the notion of 'style1-" that curiously personal thingy-in technical writing. The "great art" of Pater, the "inevitable phrase" of Raleigh, the "note of distinction" that Arnold demanded are said to be beyond the scope, as they are supposed to be beside the need, of a writer on geology or engineering. This is a narrow view. Science, no less than belles lettres, calls for the best exercise of the human intelligence; the art of writing should be employed as skilfully and as earnestly in a description of the structure of the Sierra Nevada, or of the construction of a tunnel through the range, as in a rhapsody welcoming the rosy fingers of the dawn. The idea still lingers that fine writing does not befit technology, even though the masters of the Victorian period-Huxley, Tyndall, Ruskin-proved that science is worthy to be arrayed in the best robes that the looms of thought can weave. At the beginning of these lectures I quoted Barrie's remark touching the inability of the scientific man to express himself. That imputation has been passed to the technologist, whose utilitarian pursuits are supposed to make him too clumsy for the refinements of human speech. We may not have acquired the self-consciousness of those writers on Art whose "power of expression is so cultivated that their sensual caterwauling may be almost mistaken for the music of the spheres"; nor can we imitate the politicians, who have the ability to speak far beyond anything that they may have to say; but we too have a litera-

Data are presented in this paper to show that addition of zirconium to sand-cast Mg-Th alloys effects a marked decrease in the grain size of these alloys which is accompanied by a significant increase in the mechanical properties over the entire range of thorium content investigated. The beneficial effect of zirconium on the strength properties is maintained at elevated temperatures up to 700°F. In addition the alloys exhibit exceptionally high creep resistance at temperatures up to 600°F. Zirconium does not greatly improve the strength or creep characteristics of extruded Mg-'Th alloys. Cerium is not a desirable addition to Mg-Th-Zr alloys. IN a previous paper,' it was shown that addition of thorium to magnesium imparts exceptionally high resistance to creep at elevated temperatures both in the sand-cast and in the extruded states. The large grain size of the sand-cast alloys, however, renders them of questionable value as engineering materials. Sauerwald² showed that the grain size can be reduced effectively by the addition of zirconium. Results of a detailed study of the properties of Mg-Th-Zr alloys over a wide range of thorium content are presented in this paper. In accordance with the preliminary findings of Sauerwald,² it is shown here that Mg-Th-Zr alloys possess the unusual combination of fine grain size and a high level of strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Some information on the effect of cerium on the properties of Mg-Th-Zr alloys is presented also. Effect of Th on Solubility of Zr in Molten Mg Sand-cast test bars and 3 in. diam extrusion billets of Mg-Th-Zr and Mg-Th-Ce-Zr alloys* were pre- pared according to the procedures described in the previous paper.' The zirconium was added in the form of sponge metal as supplied by the Bureau of Mines.' The maximum amount of zirconium that usually can be introduced into magnesium at the customary alloying temperature of 1350° F is about 0.7 pct. The analyses in Table I clearly show that thorium in- creases the solubility of zirconium in liquid magnesium. The tabulated zirconium contents are designated as "acid soluble;" this serves to distinguish these values from the small amount of zirconium that is not dissolved when the alloy is subjected to the action of a dilute acid solution. The "acid-insoluble" zirconium is believed to be ineffective as an alloying ingredient. The acid-insoluble zirconium contents ranged between 0.03 and 0.16 pct in the present alloys, the tendency was toward higher values in alloys with higher thorium content. In contrast to the effect of thorium, cerium decreases the solubility of zirconium in magnesium. This is shown by the three Mg-Th-Ce-Zr alloyst in- cluded in Table I and stands in agreement with the observations of Nelson and Stricter".' on Mg-misch-metal-Zr alloys. Effect of Zr on Grain Size of Mg-Th Alloys The potent effect of zirconium as a grain refiner has been demonstrated for many types of magnesium alloys.3-8 Of greatest importance to date are Mg-Zn-Zr alloys5,6,8 and Mg-mischmetal-Zr alloys.3,4,7 Zirconium has also been found to exert a marked grain-refining action on Mg-Th alloys. All the Mg-Th-Zr alloys cast in the form of ½ in. diam test bars have an exceedingly fine grain size (Table I). Reference to the previous paper' will show that binary Mg-Th alloys containing up to 6 pct Th are almost completely columnar even in the M in. diam reduced section of a test bar, and that 10 to 50 pct Th alloys have an equiaxed grain structure of 0.03 to 0.08 in. The data in Table I also show that addition of cerium to Mg-Th-Zr alloys has no effect on the grain size. In addition to increasing the strength properties, the fine grain size of Mg-Th-Zr alloys

Discussion of the paper of B. H. Dunshee, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, August, 1913, pp. 1511 to 1531. GEORGE E. MOULTHROP, Butte, Mont.:-The recording for the first time by Mr. Dunshee, in a readily usable form, of the various systems of square-set framing applied in the Butte district is a valuable contribution to mining information. The many different methods of framing employed, due to the individual ideas of superintendents and foremen of segregated companies, have given full opportunity to determine the best framing for the conditions as found in these mines, and the final adoption of a system uniform for all the mines has come about through a study of these various methods and an experience covering a period of many years. The sawed 10 by 10 in. and 12 by 12 in. timbers undoubtedly give the best satisfaction; and the style of framing the sawed timber that under all conditions has given the best practical results is that used in the Anaconda group and other mines, described and recommended by Mr. Dunshee. In this framing the posts have a horn 2 in. high and 6 in. square, the cap end having dimensions of 3 by 6 in. Instead of the framed girt shown in the drawings of the Anaconda group, the 6 by 10 in. girt adopted at some other mines, which fits into the cap and post framing with no other preparation than cutting the timber to the necessary length, fills all the necessary requirements for strength and affects a material saving in timber and labor. This, as Mr. Dunshee states, is without doubt the type of framing which would be adopted as a standard for 10 by 10 in. sawed timbers if sawed timber sets were to be used in the future generally. But saw-timber for the mines was becoming scarce and expensive, and round timber for the square sets furnished an alternative which provided, at greatly reduced cost, material which in every way supplied the requirements of the mining conditions. The use of the round timber with a satisfactory framing makes available a conveniently located and large source of supply which up to this time has served no useful industrial purpose. Particularly is this true of small timber, which is still standing in great quantities in the forests where the trees more desirable for commercial purposes have already been cut and marketed.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) GENERAL. THE Tooele plant. off the International Smelting & Refining Co. is situated at the mouth of Pine canyon, Tooele county, Utah. It is connected with the main line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad by the Tooele Valley. railway, and is about 7 miles from Tooele Junction. Fig,. 1 is a general view of the plant. The copper plant has been in operation since July, 1910, and the first blast furnace it the lead plant was blown in on Feb. 29, 1912. The location of the plant was selected on sloping ground with the idea of using gravity to the fullest extent and thus keeping labor at a minimum. Practically the entire plant is constructed of steel, reinforced concrete, and. brick.

THE major use for quartz crystal is in the manufacture of radio oscillator plates and telephone resonator and filter crystals. Quartz crystal is also cut and polished as a semiprecious gem stone, particularly in the colored varieties (amethyst, Brazilian topaz, and others), and often is carved into various objects of art. Prisms, wedges, lenses and other optical parts often are made of quartz crystal, usually for special- purpose instruments. Chips and small clear crystals below 100 grams in weight, called “lascas” by the trade, are the raw material for fused quartz products. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The Greeks believed quartz to be permanently frozen water and therefore called it krustallos, which, literally translated, means clear ice; but ages before their civilization, prehistoric man had crudely cut and polished crystals for rough charms and ornaments. About 2000 B.C., the Egyptians brought the art of cutting quartz to a high level. While there are earlier examples of crystal art that have great value, working in crystal during that period became a means of artistic and religious expression that has endured through the ages. Art museums and private collections throughout the world contain many priceless pieces. They include findings from the tombs of the earliest Egyptian rulers, as well as magnificent art objects in both clear and colored crystal encrusted with silver, gold, enamel, and precious gems of oriental and European workmanship. Pierre Curie first measured the piezoelectric effect of quartz, in 188 1, by placing a weight on the surface of a quartz crystal and measuring the resulting electrical charge, which he found was proportional to the weight applied. The following year the inverse piezoelectric effect was proved by the Curies. By applying a voltage to a piece of quartz, a measurable physical displacement occurs. The first practical application of this effect was the construction of a bimorph unit to measure voltage by measuring the amount of the displacement of the end of the bimorph. Blast-furnace flue dust is one of the most troublesome operating factors in the iron and steel industry. It is usually involved in all the unpleasant phases of blast-furnace operations. It adds to our aggravations until we are willing to spend large sums of money to keep it out of our stoves and boilers and more money to handle it again and again on one scheme or another to induce the furnaces to retain it without bad after effects. Several successful operators claim that it is useless to recharge raw flue dust because the furnace would never have blown it out if it had been suitable material for blast-furnace consumption. Most of us who have made persistent efforts to return raw flue dust to the furnaces have decided that it is very often false economy to do so. Yet some remarkable results have been attained at the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co. through recharging raw dust. The plant comprises six modern blast furnaces. Up to 1909, about 300,000 tons of flue dust had accumulated in stock piles. During the last 10 years, there have been recharged into these furnaces all of the flue dust recovered from the furnace operations, the entire stock pile of Rue dust, and nearly 80,000 tons of dust shipped from other furnaces of the Carnegie Steel Co. The results obtained arc. shown in Table 1.

Scaled reservoir models have been used to study the effect of gravity on oil recovery performance in frontal-drive operations; namely, water, gas, or solvent flooding. The difference in density between the reservoir oil and the injected fluid causes their segregation, resulting in a non-uniform advance of the fluid front. In the laboratory flow tests, which simulated both five-spot and linear injection operations in flat reservoirs, the viscous, capillary, and gravity forces present in these operations were scaled. Dyed fluids were used so that the gross movement of the injected fluid could be observed. The studies covered a range of injection rates, formation thicknesses, and rock and fluid properties normally encountered in field operations. The results of the model tests indicate that the volume of the reservoir contacted by the injected fluid at its breakthrough into the producing well is less than that expected based on information which neglects gravity effects. This difference can often be as much as 80 per cent by gas or water injection in uniform sand bodies. Preliminary flow tests on a non-uniform sand body indicate that the uniformity of the flood fronts may in some situations be influenced to a much greater degree by permeability variations within the rock body than by gravity effects. The magnitude of fluid segregation due to gravity is controlled by the average injection rate, rather than day to day or week to week variations. INTRODUCTION One of the important factors controlling the oil recovery from a frontal-drive operation, such as water, gas, or solvent injection, is the volumetric sweep efficiency. This factor is a measure of the gross portion of the reservoir that is contacted by the displacing fluid. The volumetric sweep efficiency is influenced by gravity effects, well arrangements, and variations in rock permeability within the reservoir. The gravity effects are due to the displacing fluid being of different density than the reservoir oil. This causes the displacing fluid to move preferentially toward either the top or bottom of the formation. Non-uniform advance of the flood front can be caused by the relative positions of the injection and production wells. Variations in rock permeability also result in an uneven advance of the displacing fluid. Gas zones, representing paths of low resistance, may result in non-uniform movement of the injected fluid. The more uneven the advance of the displacing fluid, the lower is the volumetric sweep efficiency and thus the lower the oil recovery efficiency. The effects of well arrangement and permeability variations, upon the gross movement of the injected fluid have been the subjects of extensive investiga-ti0ns.1,2,3,4,5,6 Gravity effects have been recognized as being present in frontal-drive operations'.' but there has been little quantitative measure of their magnitude. Very likely the reason gravity effects have not been studied is that this problem does not lend itself to simple experimental or mathematical analysis. The development of reservoir modeling techniques has made possible a quantitative determination of the effect of gravity on fluid segregation and thus upon the oil recovery performance of frontal-drive operations. This paper presents a progress report on a laboratory investigation of gravity effects in fully liquid-saturated, horizontal, uniform as well as non-uniform systems. These results were obtained from scaled experiments on both linear and five-spot systems within the range of conditions normally encountered in secondary recovery operations. This study is concerned with the gross movement of the injected fluid to the time it first reaches the production wellbore. Therefore, it should be emphasized that the results of this paper can not be used to determine the effect of gravity segregation on oil recovery efficiency at abandonment conditions. Portevin. 2 In the preparation of photomicrographs of laboratory specimens as illustrations for student work, and in connection with various researches, the writer has been working along the same line for some time and, therefore, was much interested in the results given, especially those of Portevin. He has correlated the information on the subject and has outlined a broad scientific basis for future work along this line. It is largely with the idea of adding something by way of illustration to the work already done that this paper is written. The eutectic is generally understood to mean the alloy having the lowest melting point of any alloy of the system, and in which the melt becomes supersaturated with reference to the two or more phases which separate out simultaneously or alternately. From the surface pattern, the eutectic means a structure with no primary crystals. It is not always easy to get the exact eutectic composition in making any alloy; in fact, a slight range in composition may be expected and some of the coarser particles may be richer in either of the composing metals. Even when chemical analysis shows the right composition, differences in density of the pure metals may cause segregation, or supercooling resulting from different crystallizing properties may give a surface pattern the appearance of being on one side of the eutectic point. However, the alloys on either side of the eutectic composition, showing primary crystals of one of the phases and the effect of the proeutectic form on the surface pattern of the eutectic make a very interesting study, which is slightly touched upon in this paper. The phases, or microconstituents, of a eutectic may be pure metals (Pb-Sb, Tl-Au), solid solutions (Cd-Zn), a pure metal and a solid solution (Ag-Sn), or a pure metal or solid solution with an intermetallic compound (Sb-Mg, Sb-Cu, As-Cu, Bi-Te, etc.).

THE first to appreciate and foresee the value of applying electrical measurements to structural studies was Prof. Conrad Schlumberger, Professor of Physics at the School of Mines in Paris. One of his earliest practical undertakings in this line was carried out, in the field, at Fierville-la-Campagne, Normandy, in 1912. His book, published in 1920,1 still stands as an authoritative, fundamental treatise on the use of the electric current in geological studies, in spite of the rapid evolution of geophysics during the last seven years. A remarkable feature of this book is that, even then, it stressed the role of electricity in structural investigations and made public the first successful results obtained therewith. Stratigraphic studies have been pursued continuously by Conrad Schlumberger and his associates since 1912, the only interruption being the World War. The results attained demonstrate the wide possibilities of electrical exploration in structural work. This field of activity is, at the least, as varied and valuable as the search for ore. It is curious that until very recently it has so slightly attracted the attention of geophysicists and geologists on this continent. The purpose of this paper is to present briefly some examples of the practical application of the potential methods to geological studies. These examples are chosen from a number of problems solved in the field by our firm, in the course of its consulting practice. Certain fundamental points are briefly stated before the field operations and interpretations are described.

BLAST-FURNACE flue dust is one of the most troublesome operating factors in the iron and steel industry. It is usually involved in all the unpleasant phases of blast-furnace operations. It adds to our aggravations until we are willing to spend large sums of money to keep it out of our stoves and boilers acid more money to handle it again and again on one scheme or another to induce the furnaces to retain it without bad after effects. Several successful operators claim that it is useless to recharge raw flue dust because the furnace would never have blown it out if it had been suitable material for blast-furnace consumption. Most of us who have made persistent efforts to return raw flue dust to the furnaces have decided that it is very often false economy to do so. Yet some remarkable results have been attained at the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co. through recharging raw dust. The plant comprises six modern blast furnaces. Up to 1909, about 300,000 tons of flue dust had accumulated in stock piles. During the last 10 years, there have been recharged into these furnaces all of the flue dust recovered from the furnace operations, the entire stock pile of flue dust, and nearly 80,000 tons of dust shipped from other furnaces of the Carnegie Steel Co. The results obtained are shown in Table 1.

This paper deals with the results of a study of the application and development of mining machines for cutting out and removing dirt bands in bituminous coal beds. Face Preparation When one or more dirt bands1 occur in a seam of coal, the problem of elimination of impurities becomes manifest. The degree of completeness to which these impurities arc removed at the face has an important bearing upon labor costs, haulage costs and outside cleaning costs, and often the ash content of the product is markedly affected. Yet, because the present-day miller is paid for the number of tons he loads he often lacks interest in the quality of the coal. To insure a clean product, a system of penalties for dirty coal is enforced, but control of extraneous impurity content in the loaded coal is often inadequate and ineffectual when coal and banded impurity are shot as one. It seems only logical that to reduce the amount of impurities by proper face preparation before the men are permitted to load the coal is the most efficient method of preparation. Many mines with one or more bands of impurities in their seams are able to mine a desirable product with a comparatively small amount of surface preparation. In fact, three companies in West Virginia have recently changed their methods of fact* preparation, with most gratifying results. The first company (in the Kanawha field) after changing its cutting practice with the hope of relieving a sales problem, was rewarded by an approximate 3 per cent drop in ash in the product. Another company, operating in the same field, reduced its ash approximately 4 per cent by a change in cutting practice. The third company (in the Pocahontas field) found the wet washer inadequate in producing a marketable coal, and installed new cutting machines. Three cuts are now being made in each working place, and the results arc so satisfactory that the cleaning plant has been abandoned.

The ultimate production from a natural reservoir of petroleum is inversely proportional to the gas-oil ratios existing during the producing life of the reservoir whenever gas is the major expulsive force in the recovery. In other words, in the period during which gas is the major expulsive force the ultimate production will be increased if the gas-oil ratio is decreased, and vice versa. This condition prevails in the greater number of the present producing districts. While this relation is difficult to prove from actual operation, on account of the present paucity of detailed observations, it must be admitted after a study of the forces and conditions governing the recovery of petroleum from natural reservoirs. Where gas and oil exist under pressure in sand interstices and water movement is not freely possible, the force expended in moving the oil to the well is the expansion and movement of the gas through the pressure differential existing between the interior of the reservoir and the well. If pressure and solution conditions in the untapped reservoir are such that the relation between gas and oil volumes at atmospheric conditions is as 100:1; and if during the producing period, until the gas is exhausted, the relation between the gas and oil volumes produced is 300:1, it follows that only one-third of the oil has been produced and the remaining two-thirds cannot be recovered unless some extraneous force is introduced into the reservoir. This serves to illustrate the importance of gas-oil ratio control during normal producing operations. Gas-oil Ratio Control Eliminating natural conditions in a reservoir, which govern gas-oil ratios, such as the physical properties of the oil and gas, the physical characteristics of the reservoir strata and the original pressure and solution conditions in the reservoir, which cannot be controlled by operation practice; and also eliminating operating conditions that apply to the reservoir as a whole, such as well spacing, well locations, relative completion dates, various penetrations and drilling practice; there remains but one condition in each well that influences the gas-oil ratio and that is

At Kobe Steel Ltd., various improvements in pellet quality have been carried out since beginning lime-fluxed pellet production. Especially, dolomite-fluxed pellets, developed in 1975, have superior high temperature properties. With this improvement, successful BF performance has been achieved. But, in order to achieve more successful BF performance, improvements of physical properties such as the shape factor, reposed angle, and the bulk density are desired. Now, crushed pellets have been developed for the improvement of those characters. The test operation with these new pellets in Kakogawa No. 2 BF was carried out with successful results. This report describes the development of crushed pellets and their use in BF.
