AMONG the petroleum-producing countries of the world, Roumania occupies the fifth place; in Europe, it occupies second place, coming after Russia. The extraction and the use of petroleum in Roumania, may be trace( as far back as 1856, but the production on an industrial scale started in 1896, when the "Steaua Romana," was formed. From that time until the beginning of the war, the petroleum industry had a rapid growth the number of the producing companies increased to 37, and production FIG. 1.-ROUMANIAN OIL AND GAS FIELDS. increased from 81,571 tons, in 1896, to 1,898,545 tons, in 1912, when the greatest production was reached. In 1916, when the Germans invaded Roumania, the oilfields, at the order of the Allies and under British supervision, were destroyed, to pre vent their exploitation by the Central Powers; the wells were blown in the refineries and the storage tanks burnt, and pipelines put out of order This voluntary destruction, which weakened the resistance of the Central Powers, set back the petroleum industry at least one decade. Reconstruction after the war was slow, because of bad transportation conditions the scarcity of drilling and refining material, the insufficiency of. electric power, and the continuous depreciation of the Roumanian money, which made difficult the buying of the necessary materials for reconstruction.

In order to meet the unprecedented demand for copper it has proven necessary not only to develop every primary source, but also thoroughly to exploit the vast reservoir of metal in use that is not directly serving the war effort. To accomplish this, industry has been called upon to use its resourcefulness for developing methods of recovery that have not been previously utilized. It is in this connection that we have been asked to review the methods suggested for recovering the basic constituents of various types of the so-called clad or composite steels. As a background for a discussion of recovery processes, it seems appropriate to consider clad materials in general and their processes of manufacture. A composite steel has been defined as one consisting of two or more component parts of which the smallest shall comprise at least 3 per cent of the total mass. Clad materials or composites are produced commercially by several different methods of which the most important may be classified as: I. The Blacksmith or Forge Weld Method. This method is limited to carbon steels or low-alloy steels as the presence of even small amounts of common alloying metals prevent the formation of a satisfactory weld. The principle is the application of pressure to sections in contact at elevated temperatures. Because of the tendency of the iron to oxidize, borax is generally used as a flux to absorb the iron oxide. 2. Casting Process-In this method a composite ingot, billet or cake is produced by pouring one metal onto or about another. The bond may be accomplished by the action of the molten metal against a solid, in which case the bond may be referred to as mechanical; while in other instances alloying occurs at the interface producing an anchor by the formation of component parts of the two materials. 3. Cementation Process.-In this process any number of combinations of metallic and nonmetallic constituents which are mixed together may be used as a bonding agent. The combinations, whatever they may be, are placed between the materials to be joined and subjected to pressures at elevated temperatures to produce the desired bond. 4. Fusion Welding Processes.-Gas and electric joining for direct use or subsequent fabrication. 5. The, Assembly Process.-This method involves the joining together of prefabricated bars or plates followed by hot and/or cold working the assembly to the desired finished form. This method is advantageous in many cases because of its flexibility on small quantities as compared to the casting method. It is also possible to control the relative proportion of components more accurately. Isothermal sections of the pseudo-ternary carbide systems TiC-VC-ZrC, TaC-VC-ZrC, and NbC-VC-ZrC have been examined. The sections contain an inverted U shaped two-phase field whose maximum extent is 77 molecular pct for Tic, 64 pct for TaC, and 51 pct for NbC. lsoparametric lines were determined which show the curvature of the single-phase field and the direction of tie lines in the two-phase field. It was not possible to show any relationship between atom size and the extent of the two-phase field. REVIOUS work' on the solubility relationship of several pairs of refractory cubic monocarbides from the group Tic, ZrC, VC, NbC, and TaC has shown that, with the exception of the system VC-ZrC, they all form continuous series of solid solutions. It was demonstrated that the limited solubility in the case of VC-ZrC system was primarily a question of the size factor, the size difference between vanadium and zirconium being greater than the limiting value of about 15 pet. It is interesting to consider the results of combining these isomorphous carbides in groups of three and to determine the isothermal section of the pseudo-ternary diagram at, for instance, 2000°C, a temperature that will assure an equilibrium structure in a reasonable length of time. In the ternary systems where the three pairs form complete solid solution series, it is probable that the isothermal ternary section would be a single- phase field, although this is not necessarily the case. However, if one pair of carbides has a very limited solubility, then there must be a two-phase field of some extent, and it is the purpose of the present work to examine the extension of this field and to determine if it can be related to the nature of the third carbide. This condition is fulfilled if the VC-ZrC pair, which has only limited solubility, is combined with Tic, TaC, or NbC. The relative sizes of the metal atoms undoubtedly play a role in the extent of the single-phase field, and the values obtained from the pure carbides, assuming close-packing between metal and carbon atoms and a carbon atom diameter of 1.54A, are

The magnitude and economic importance of the problem of correctly valuing natural-gas leaseholds become evident when me consider that: (a) Natural gas is handled in 55 per cent. of the gas distributing plants in the United States. (b) Present known natural-gas acreage forms 47 per cent. of the total known mineral-land acreage in the United States. (c) Five acres of land are now required to protect and maintain continuous service to each of the 2,000,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in the United States. (d) The cost of acquiring and maintaining this acreage of an expendible resource represents a substantial part of the cost of the natural-gas service to the consumer. (e) "The right of a citizen by means of his ownership of or his mining leases on land to draw gas from beneath its surface is property and sometimes valuable property."' A large number of other court decisions have established the basic legal principle that the right to drill for gas within a given area constitutes an interest in the land itself, and is necessarily an exclusive property right. Definition of Vested Interests or Rights "Vested interests are economic interests which are legally recognized to be such that they cannot be impaired by public action, directly or indirectly, without indemnification. Vested interests are largely property interests. The recognition of an interest as a vested interest gives it some of the attributes of property, and by American courts it would be comprised in their very inclusive concept of property. Otherwise than through property, vested interests generally arise through contract."

THE CHAIRMAN (B. B. GOTTSBERGER, Miami, Ariz.).-On your trip today through the Inspiration and Miami mills you have seen in actual operation the machines which represent the changes adopted in grinding methods in the Miami district from the beginning of operations in March, 1911. In one section of the Miami plant are three Chilean mills not yet discarded, representing the first machines adopted. In another section, pebble grinding is still in operation, while in the balance of the plant, pebbles have been replaced with iron balls. In all cases these machines are handling a feed which is the product of roll, grinding down to about ¼ in. in, size. The latest step in grinding in the district, You saw at the Inspiration plant, where in Marcy mills a filed, the larger pieces of which remain on a 2-in. opening, is being reduced in one operation to a product of which only about 3 per. cent. remains on the 48-mesh screen. A detailed comparison of the methods used at the two plants would be very instructive but our own work at Miami has not yet reached a point where such a comparison is possible, the reason being that our final product is not yet fine enough. By means of larger Hardinge mills operating in closed circuit with Dorr classifiers soon to, be installed in one section of the plant, we hope to obtain, under properly balanced operating conditions the same end result as at Inspiration. It, might interest you, however, to know some of the results we have obtained here by the substitution of balls for pebbles. With pebble grinding, using three 8-ft. by 22-in. mills, followed by one 8-ft. by 66-in. mill for regrinding the coarse product of the primary mills, we handled 636 tons per 24 hr. in one section of the plant. Substituting balls for pebbles in the first operation and using two mills in place of three we obtained a tonnage of .714 tons to the section. With the use of balls both in the primary mills and in the regrinding mills, the tonnage for one section was raised to 822 tons per day. Coincident with this increase in tonnage, we also obtained a greater efficiency. The use of pebbles in all mills showed 21.5 per cent. plus 48-mesh material in the final tailing, which figure was reduced to 13.9 per cent. for balls followed by pebbles, and to 4.6 per cent. with the use of balls both in the primary and regrinding mills.

Committee C-8 of the American Society for Testing and Materials defines "Refractories" as "Material, usually nonmetallic, used to withstand high temperature," and it defines the term "Refractoriness" thus, "In refractories the capability of maintaining the desired degree of chemical and physical identity at high temperatures and in the environment and conditions of use." The ability to withstand high temperatures is critical to classifying a material as a "refractory." However, as the foregoing definition of "refractoriness" implies, the refractory material may be subjected to and is expected to resist not only high temperatures but a variety of other destructive forces incident to its use. These include abrasion, impact, thermal shock, chemical attack, and high level loads at high temperatures. The various industrial applications of refractories represent an infinite variety of combinations and degrees of severity of these destructive forces, including high temperatures. Naturally, such a variety of application conditions leads to a need for a wide variety of refractory products to satisfy those conditions. The number of refractory products available is great enough that some form of classification is necessary to a discussion of refractories. Refractories may be classified in several ways, but the most suitable one is based on their general compositions and to lesser degrees on their physical condition and distinctive properties. The primary types of brick include aluminosilicate brick (fire clay and alumina), basic brick (magnesia and chrome ore, alone and in various combinations), silica brick, insulating brick, and special refractories (carbon, Sic, ZrO,, zircon, borides, and nitrides). Brick are, of course, preformed and are usually heat treated at high temperatures before use, but are in some instances unburned and/or chemically bonded, including the relatively new class of tar-bonded magnesia and/or dolomite brick. In addition to preformed refractories, another broad category includes the so-called specialty refractories, which are usually made in the same types as itemized for brick-bonding mortars and high temperature cements, hydraulic setting castables or refractory concrete, plastic firebrick, and ramming mixes. Refractory grains, such as fire clay and high alumina calcines, dead-burned magnesite and periclase, and dead-burned dolomite are also considered refractory products. Brick are also classified on the basis of physical dimensions, as standard sizes and special shapes. The standard sizes are those which are of definite shape and design and are designated as 9 x 4 ½ x 2 ½ in. and 9 x 4 ½ x 3 in. straights and series. All other brick of non- standard sizes are referred to as special shapes. These come about as a result of a particular need for a given furnace or for a particular application.

Hydrogen solubility measurements were made on a series of Ti-O alloys, and a portion of the 800°C isotherm for the Ti-O-H system was determined. Activities of oxygen and titanium were calculated from the experimentally measured activities of hydrogen, using ternary Gibbs-Duhem integrations. The data were extrapolated to obtain thermo-dynamic properties of binary Ti-O solutions. The thermodynamic properties of a Ti-0 solid solutions thus determined were compared with properties predicted from interstitial models. The Gibbs-Duhem equation, long used to calculate activities in binary systems, has been extended. recently to ternary systems.1"3 When the activity of one component in a ternary system is known as a function of composition, the activities of the other two components can be calculated from that of the first by an integration procedure, provided certain restrictions are observed on the path of integration. Often the activity of one component in a ternary system can be measured readily, while the activities of the other two components are difficult to measure. Gibbs-Duhem calculations are especially applicable to such systems. The further possibility arises of developing a new and indirect approach to activity measurement in binary systems. The proposed new method for binary systems consists of adding varying amounts of a third component whose thermodynamic behavior is easily measured. The activity of this added component is determined experimentally as a function of composition. Then the activities of the two components of the original binary system are calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integrations and extrapolations. For the work to be described in this paper, the Ti-0-H system was selected as a promising system for evaluating this approach. Investigations of the Ti-H system have shown that the activity of hydrogen can be measured precisely with little difficulty. Pure titanium transforms from a low-temperature a form (hcp) to a higher-temperature /3 firm (bcc) at 882.5"~ The phase transformation occurs in a temperature range where hydrogen pressures are easily measured. Also, the diffusivity of hydrogen at temperatures above 600" or 700"~ is large enough that equilibrium can be reached within a reasonable time.

The nation's ever-expanding construction and mining activity has placed an increasing demand upon engineers and geologists to design and construct stable slopes in earth materials-soil and rock. Man's attempt to handle these slope stability problems has been based primarily on practical experience and the resulting theories formulated to explain the phenomena. Too many instances occur when man is faced with a slope stability problem that has not yet been experienced and doesn't lend itself to solution by any existing theory. At this point he must extend himself in using his engineering judgment to arrive at a reasonable and safe design. As past experience has shown, all of the "safe designs" are not really safe. Sometimes they result in embarrassing failures. Measurements provide the key to understanding and controlling natural phenomena. We cannot hope to gain control of the slope stability problem until we understand the causes of slope failure, their behavior with respect to time and their relative magnitudes. Measurements required for an adequate definition of any slope problem must be of the highest reliability because of the importance of decisions which must be based on them. For this reason, direct measurements of movement, shear strength, water pressure, etc. of the unstable mass are preferable to indirect measurements of other physical properties. Movement instruments which can be positioned inside of the slope mass (within boreholes) are among the most useful in diagnosis and/or monitoring of slope movements. The higher the sensitivity and il-measurement precision possible with borehole instruments, the quicker the required information can be obtained and the more exactly may hazardous conditions be observed. A high density of measuring points in a single drill hole is deemed essential for diagnostic purposes. Behavior gradients may thus be obtained. Almost every mining engineer who has had charge of extensive underground workings will have observed how often directions as to course and levels, deduced from careful theodolite measurements, have been slighted or disregarded by mine-foremen and shift-bosses, and how often these tedious measurements had to be repeated, even for minor works, such as ventilation-drifts or winzes, in order to carry them on with the required or desirable regularity. Besides the time and care absorbed by theodolite surveys, there is still another inconvenience, namely, the interruption of transportation during the time of observation, and, in heavily producing mines, the loss consequent upon such interruption. In proposing a subsidiary instrument to the theodolite, it is my purpose not to present a new one, but simply to recommend to the consideration of American mining engineers one which has been in use in nearly all the prominent mines of Europe for many decades, and has there fulfilled its purpose admirably. I refer to the mining or hanging compass (Fig. 1). At my urgent request, the firm of Keuffel & Esser, of New York, have lately constructed this instrument in a form which adapts it better to use in this country. By the addition of the trigonometer, the banging compass becomes at once an instrument which will prove of value even in the hands of foremen and practical miners, who have little or no knowledge of trigonometrical calculations. Probably many will say that me have no use for needle-instruments ; that our modern theodolites are of such perfect description, and leave so little to be desired, that the introduction of a compass would look like a step backwards compared to the fine results obtained by angle-instruments. ENGINEERING education today is like a crazy quilt of somber wools and gaudy shoddy, chain-stitched on an academic assembly line, and sold at ever mounting prices to inexperienced youths for lifetime use. Each engineering school offers a half-dozen or so patterns with essentially the same skimpy wool content. Sales appeal is in the color of the shoddy, denoted by the hopeful adjectives chemical, civil and the like. This article is argument for an all wool product made by slow, careful handwork. Bluntly it proposes a thorough four-year undergraduate drill in fundamental science and general engineering empirics, leavened by continuing study of the third of the engineer's troubles: Man. It is not contended that existing methods of engineering education have failed to start men on the path to successful engineering practice (too many of you have started that way); rather, social conditions and the bounds of knowledge have changed tremendously, and corresponding alterations in the pattern of engineering education are overdue. We'll Teach the Specifics The first part of this contention is illustrated by excerpts from a letter received recently from an officer of one of the largest corporations: "We are interested in employing two or three outstanding young engineers to be placed on a special training program to develop them as design and construction engineers.... "We propose to put these men on a four-month indoctrination and orientation course after which they would be given job-training assignments for a period that will vary from about six months to about a year and a half depending upon the aptitudes, abilities and intelligence of the candidates.... "I am not too fussy about what kind of engineers the men might be insofar as academic courses are concerned. They could be.. . in almost any engineering classification.... We can furnish the additional training beyond the academic fundamentals. "The starting rate for these jobs would be $326 per month...." This letter is not unique; rather it is representative of a practice that has become common. It is industry's enforced response to the general refusal by young graduates to submit to union domination in order to gain operating experience at the labor level. The message to engineering schoolteachers is plain: You teach the fundamentals; we'll teach our practice and pay the graduate to learn it. The letter means to the student that time spent in school studying the specific practices of particular industries is waste compounded. The school can't give the equivalent of what industry teaches, wherefore industry will still demand apprenticeship. The student must pay for the specific instruction at school instead of being paid to take it later. And time-consuming specifics crowd out drill in basic scientific and technical subjects as well as liberal arts.

Mineral fillers are employed in United States industries to the extent of more than seven million tons annually, valued in excess of a hundred million dollars. This substantial usage involves a wide variety of mineral materials. To this may be added products manufactured from minerals, such as carbon black, portland cement, lime or chemically precipitated calcium carbonates, which would add substantially to the total. The purposes for which fillers are used differ considerably. Minerals used as fillers are mostly silicates, silicas, and carbonates as referred to hereinafter. The term "mineral filler" has various meanings in mineral technology and in the arts. Fillers are comparatively inert and their action is mainly physical. Materials that are employed primarily for chemical reactivity, or for pigment or abrasive functions ordinarily would not be considered to be fillers when used for these purposes. Nearly all filler usages are based on advantages which are gained by desired modification of composition properties or by improvements in processing. A simple definition for a filler is an inert material that is included in a composition for some useful purpose. This definition may be amplified or made more specific for each of the filler usages, the major ones of which are: paints, paper, plastics, rubber, bituminous compositions, pesticides and fertilizers. There are in addition a whole host of minor usages. Powdered minerals when employed as components in paints, varnishes and lacquers are considered as extender pigments or low refractive index pigments. In paper, the term loading material as well as filler is used; in pesticides, the terms diluents and carriers connote different functions. For bituminous compositions, rubber and plastics, the usage of the simple word "filler" is more usual, but the designation loading material is sometimes used. Minerals Used as Fillers Most of the industrial minerals, and many rock powders are employed to some extent for different filler uses. These usages vary from year to year depending on availabilities, costs, technologic trends and advancements. For the major applications, however, and for the more particular requirements at any given period, there are general trends which favor a more or less restricted group of filler products for each of the major consumer fields. This selection of materials is determined by the characteristics of the individual filler products, their effectiveness in fulfilling the primary function or functions for which they may be employed, and the cost after incorporation in the finished product. The mineral-bearing materials of major importance as fillers are: limestones, clays of several types, talc, pyrophyllite, mica, barite, diatomite, crystalline silicas, asbestos, slate and other rock dusts. Others of secondary importance include: gypsum, vermiculite, phosphate rock, perlite, and pulverized wastes, such as slag and fly ash. A considerable number of other minerals are used to lesser extent. Among these minor mineral materials are: feldspar, pumicite, wollastonite,18 tripoli, nepheline syenite,6 coal, altered volcanic rock and others.2 Indeed, most mineral materials, when reduced to fine particle size may have some potential usage as fillers, depending on their properties, availability and price. In a former paper (Trans., xvi., 770) I gave the text of the archaic mining law of the State of New York, together with some comments upon its curious provisions. In that connection I pointed out two facts : first, that the law seemed to have originated in the schemes of private parties, who were satisfied with those parts of it which concerned them particularly; and secondly, that the remaining provisions had been hitherto quite inoperative, for the reason that mines of the character to which they referred had not been discovered in the State. This volume is one of a special edition, of 100 copies, of an address delivered before the American Iron and Steel Institute in 1917, in which the author gives his personal reminiscences of the development in iron and steel making, as observed during an active participation in the industry in eastern Ohio, which began in 1857. To this are added some brief data on the early history of iron and steel, and a chapter on the activities of the American iron manufactures during the great war. The volume is profusely illustrated with portraits of men of note in the industry.

THE Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company is the largest copper producer in the Philippines, and the only one that makes a concentrate valuable principally for its copper; also, it has the only productive copper mine situated at considerable distance from the sea, and is the only one in the islands operating its own smelter. The Lepanto mine is in the Municipal District of Mankayan, sub-province of Benguet, near the heart of the Mountain Province of Northern Luzon. It is 165 km. from its shipping point at San Fernando, Province of La Union, on the shore of the China Sea. Elevations at the property range from 3200 to 4500 ft. The climate is very mild; temperatures are seldom below 50° or above 80°F. Annual rainfall approaches 170 in. and is mainly confined to a rainy season lasting from May to October. The months from December to April, inclusive, are usually extremely dry. This climatic pecularity entails the problems of landslides on the roads during the rainy season and water shortage during the dry season. The Mountain Trail, an improved rock-surfaced toll road maintained by the Commonwealth Government, gives access to the property. The 105 km. over this road may be traveled in about 4 ½ hr. during the dry season. Very few sections of the road are straight for more than 100 meters, and about one third of it is a one-way road controlled by gates. All freight for the property is delivered by the Manila Railroad Company to Bauang, La Union, 45 km. west of Baguio and at sea level, where it is picked up by freight trucks and hauled via Baguio to Lepanto. Granulated matte is hauled in bulk from Lepanto in four-ton lots on freight trucks to the storage bins at San Fernando. Freight rates from Bauang to the property amount to P8.00 per ton, and from the property to San Fernando the rate is P16.00 per ton. The company pays the road toll, P1.00 per truck, each way. THE CAMP The company maintains a modern camp, well separated from the mine and reduction plant. Comfortable and sanitary living quarters, water, and light, as well as free medical service are provided all employees. A hospital staffed by a doctor and two nurses takes care of all medical treatment. Considering recreational facilities of great importance, the company has provided two tennis courts, two basketball courts, and badminton courts for employees. Bowling alleys and a motion picture theater are operated by the company, the profits being expended for other recreational purposes. The Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at its last session passed a new act dealing with barrier pillars, which may have a wide interest in other states. In the past the laws of Pennsylvania have required that the superintendent of a mine "shall not permit the mining of coal within 50 ft. of any abandoned mine containing a dangerous accumulation of water, until said danger has been removed by driving a passageway to tap and drain off said water, as provided for in this act: Provided, That the thickness of the barrier pillars shall be greater aid shall be in proportion of one foot of pillar thickness to each one and one-quarter feet of water head, if in the judgment of the engineer of the property and that of the district inspector it is necessary for the safety of the persons working in the mine." Thus it has happened that a thickness of several hundred feet has necessarily been left in pillars in mining. It has seemed to many in the mining industry that this left an unnecessary amount of coal in pillars, and did not provide that the pillar be left equally on the two sides of the mine. As a result the General Assembly of 1927 by Joint Resolution authorized the Governor to appoint a Commission of "seven prominent citizens, of whom four shall be recognized mining engineers, one shall be a hydraulic engineer, one a geologist of recognized standing in his profession, and one a State mine inspector from the bituminous coal mining district, to investigate and report upon barrier pillars in the bituminous coal region." The Governor appointed the following Commission: Morris Coulter, Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corp., Indiana, Pa.; A. E. Roberts, Monroe Coal Mining Co., Revloc, Pa.; George T. Lewis, Westmoreland Coal Co., Irwin, Pa.; Morris Knowles, hydraulic engineer, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Thomas A. Mather, State Inspector of Mines, Tyrone, Pa.; A. B. Jessup, Anthracite Coal Operators Association, Jeddo, Pa.; George H. Ashley, State Geologist, Harrisburg, Pa. Mr. Coulter was elected Chairman and Mr. Ashley, Secretary. This Commission held meetings in Harrisburg, Johnstown and Pittsburgh. It obtained and considered the laws and experiences of other states and European countries. There are few natural monopolies comparable with the nitrate industry. Perhaps the only other one is, curiously enough, also an essentia1 fertilizer material, viz., potash, of which the Germans have heretofore held practically a monopoly due to the existence in their territory of the most important known deposits of potash salts. And although nitrates in minute amounts are found in many desert regions, the only deposits capable of being worked commercially exist in Chile. Combined nitrogen in the oxidized form is an essential for plant life. Nature provides it mainly through the agency of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. But where lands are cropped artificially this supply is too small, and gradually the nitrogen supply becomes exhausted. In order to continue farming, it is necessary to furnish a supply of nitrogenous plant food, and this is done by putting on various substances containing combined nitrogen. These consist of various animal wastes, ammonium sulphate, the ammonia of which is obtained in the destructive distillation of coal, and Chile saltpeter. The latter is immediately available as a plant food, the nitrogen being in the required form. The other substances must oxidize before they are available. Resides its use as a fertilizer, Chile saltpeter is the source from which the bulk of the nitric acid of commerce is derived. The use of nitric acid in the manufacture of almost all modern explosives is, of course, well known. Importance of the Nitrate Industry Chilean nitrate, the existence of which was first mentioned in 1809, is said to have been first exported in 1830. Only a few thousand tons per annum were exported for some years, but the amount gradually increased until, in 1879, when the Chile-Peruvian war began, the export amounted to about 300,000 tons. This nitrate was largely produced from the Province of Tarapaca, until then, Peruvian territory. By the terms of peace with Peru in 1884, this province, as well as Tacna, became Chilean. The Bolivian Province of Antofagasta was also acquired as a result of this war, and thus Chile, with the deposits in her own territory, acquired control of the whole supply of nitrate. Evaluation of Ellenburger reservoirs in West Texas has been an uncertain matker at best because of the lack of cores and suitable core-analysis method. Large amounts of oil arc produced from sections from which sample cuttings are obtained that contain litile porosity and no oil saturation. It has long been realized that the formation in some areas contained numerous fractures and solulion cavities that probably contained the major part of the oil present but the magnitude of the porous system conltaining oil has been unknown. Diamond coring cquipmene, used in the mining industry lor many years, has been developed for oil-field use to obtain high core recovery in fractured dolomite that is not possible with conventional coring equipment. A 36ft section of the core recovered from a fractured Ellenburger reseivoir waS analyzed by a unique but simple method to obtain the first defmite evaluation of one section of the producing formation. The cores and the method of analysis used are described and the results arc discussed in some detail. Discussion The first successful known analyses of cores recovered from the Ellenburger formation in the Permian Basin area were made on cores recovered with the use of diamond core heads. Conventionul coring methods previously used have had lour core recovery and standard methods of analysis have proved to be inadequate for evaluation of those cores that were recovered. Core Descriplion The Ellenburger formation to be dis cussed was cored using diamond core heads and oil-base drilling fluid. Of the total 103 ft cored to a depth of 8893 ft in the Ellenburger, 99 ft or 96 pct was recovered. The dolomite cores were described as gray to white, crystalline to coarscIy crystalline, with chert and calcite inclusions. Occasional shale partings ? to ¼ in. in width were noted. A small amount of green clay was found in some of the coarsely crystalline material. So intergranular porosity was found by inspection in any of the cores. The core urns highly fractured over most of its length with not more than two continuous feet that failed to contain fractures. The fractures Were nearly vertical and varied in width from those harely visible to as much as one millimeter. For the past year we have had in use at the Durham furnace a set of hollow pig-patterns made of iron, which have given such satis factory results that I think a description of them would be of interest to the members of the Institute. Before the introduction of these iron patterns, we used the ordi nary wooden patterns, made in the usual way with straps of iron along the sides to protect the corners from wearing off. The size and shape of these wooden patterns are shown in Fig. 1. When the patterns were new, the pigs weighed about 130 pounds each, and were uniform in size, and the moulding was clean. But constant use soon wore the patterns away; and at the end of a few months, the pigs had become, in consequence, so much lighter that the moulding, daily, of several additional beds was necessary to accommodate the same quantity of iron. As the patterns wear away, the moulding becomes ragged and the pigs rough. Moreover, wooden patterns are often destroyed by fire. I have known an entire set to be destroyed by a break-out of iron. The iron pattern which I have designed is free from all the objections to the wooden pattern, being not only more durable, but, in the long run, far cheaper. The iron pattern having the same shape and size as the wooden one, is made of the best flange-iron, of No. 13 gauge. After the sheets have been cut to the proper size, three heats are required for the flanging. At the first heat, each piece is stamped in a cast-iron form, which gives the proper shape to the bottom part of the pat-

VITRIOL is likewise a mineral substance from whose exhalation, according to the opinion of some, are generated and produced the elemental materials or substances which produce metals, particularly gold. It is not a fumosity from metal nor is it a thing from which metal is extracted in any manner, although it shows in certain ways that it is not entirely without metal since it produces a certain trace of it. It is a thing that has a great resemblance to alum; it has a biting substance, is sharp to the taste and pungent to the tongue, and has an astringent nature. It dissolves in water and every damp place in a short time. They say that the reason for this lies, as with every other mineral, in its poorly joined watery substances. Nor does this mean that it does not contain much earthiness; on the contrary it seems to me that there are in it five. [2.9v] different participating qualities, that is, the property of sulphur, the action of alum, the corrosion of niter or of salt, and from the metals, the properties of copper and of iron. Its ore is mined in the valleys of mountains in wild but not too rugged places. It is more a gray earth or soft dead rock than a hard stone. It always has in it some yellow and green spots or near it is some sulphur mineral, either large or small.. When it is beneath the earth it exhales a sharp and very strong foul odor of scorching similar to that of sulphur. And the waters that rise where it is are all foul, earthy, and thick, some boiling with great fumes and others without great fumes, so that they surely appear to be infernal products in many places where there is a large quantity of it. After you have excavated and sorted well the quantity you wish, the ore must be put in a heap in open airy places before the vitriol can be extracted from this soil or ore, however you wish to call it. And it is left thus exposed to the weathering of the rains, the cold, and the sun for five or six months. It must be turned several times in order to bring to the surface that which was underneath; and always when this is done it is broken small with the eye of a mattock so that it is better heated and baked throughout. When it has been brought to this point it is covered over by a shed built above it or it is carried under a hut that has already been made. Here it is left to stand for another six or eight months before it is worked.

(A contribution to the study of the conditions of equilibrium of the "free surface" of a water body inclosed in a porous medium.) IN a recent paper, on Geologic Structure in the Cushing Oil and Gas Field, Oklahoma,1 Carl H. Beal has pointed out some interesting peculiarities in the distribution of the hydrocarbons and the disposition of the "planes of separation" between the oil and the water (water surfaces). Mr. Beal's principal statements on this matter may be summarized as follows: I. In every important dome in the Cushing field, which has not been complicated by folding along its sides, the oil area in each, of the three oil and gas sands studied (Layton, Wheeler and Bartlesville) apparently extends farther down on the long axis. of the dome than it does on the steeper sides. The result is that water is encountered at a lesser depth below datum plane (sea level) on the steep sides of the dome than along the ends where the beds are more gently tilted. II. In the Layton and Wheeler sands (to which the detailed study of water surfaces has been almost entirely confined), the water surface is not level, but dips at a gentle angle (maximum dip 100 ft. to the mile) away from the center of the structure. This inclination existed prior to development, and it has been rendered greater by the rapid extraction .of oil and gas. To these statements, the following observations are added. The dominant structural feature in the Cushing field is a broad north and south anticlinal fold, along whose, axis the domes are distributed (Fig. 1, p. 1104), and the more important oil areas in each sand lie on the west side of the field. In many cases, gas has been forced to the east side of the structure, sometimes as far as the water line. From the distribution of the oil and gas bodies, Mr. Beal concludes that the hydrocarbons in this region probably migrated from the west or the northwest.
