In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table 1 may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of an 0 is a positive declaration, and an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. The reduction of a metal in an aqueous solution may be defined in terms of its source of electrons. In electrolytic reduction electrons flow as a result of applied voltages. In other systems electron sources are reducing gases or metals of lower electron affinity. In the latter two cases it is increasingly evident that reduction is electro-chemical in nature in that electrons flow through one or more conducting phases even though the discharge reactions may not be rate controlling. Electrode processes impmtant in reduction and metal deposition are reviewed and extended to contact reduction by precipitation (cementation) on mme electropositive metals. Contact reduc- tion Processes are ancient in origin and represent techniques which have had successful application for hundreds of years. In spite of this, little has been understood in terms of the dynamic properties of such systems or of important side reactions. In recent years an increasing amount of laboratory work has been carried out on contact reduction and an attempt is made here to summarize the important findings. Undoubtedly the interest aroused recently may be attributed to improved reactor design which has demonstrated on a commercial basis accelerated metal recovery by taking advantage of important kinetic and chemical parameters. of gold cyanide (Au(CN)-), respectively. The most common method for the reduction of ions in solution is by electrolysis. The impure metal is made the anode and the ions are reduced at the cathode. Leach liquors containing reducible ions may similarly be reduced electrolytically using an inert anode. The latter process is referred to as electrowinning. In recent years hydrogen has been used successfully as a gaseous re-Metallurgical Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). He was also a member of the Executive Board of the Metallurgical Society (AIME). In 1957 Dr. WADSWORTH was given the AlME Best Paper Award as coauthor of a paper on the roasting of sphalerite. On July 1, 1968 Dr. WADS-WORTH started an 24 month assignment in the Philippine Islands to assist in the development of graduate metallurgical engineering at the University of the Philippines. In addition to graduate teaching and curriculum development he will establish research programs to develop extraction processes for metals production in the islands. A PRevioUs study1 of the relations of impact strength to inclusions showed that the dynamic strength of steel is lowered by the presence of visible counted inclusions, but that other factors comprised in the term "body" have a marked influence. The previous work was carried out on selected steels from a single source, so that the body factor was purposely minimized, but even under these conditions it was found that inclusion counting or the use of the commercial inclusion rating is not satisfactory. The tensile-impact test, however, was indicated as a satisfactory measure of dynamic strength. It was further suggested that the tensile-impact test should be so standardized as to be suitable for use in specifications, and that the hardness factor should be worked out over a sufficient range to admit ready commercial use of the tensile-impact test. In accordance with these suggestions, and in view of the fact that the steels reported in the previous paper were selected and treated so as to have a minimum variation in body, hardness and structure, further work has been performed on a variety of steels which are not limited by these conditions. The word "body" is used here for want of a better term. It is simply a convenient expression which comprises the effect, of the various unknown factors that modify the dynamic strength of the steel. Thus at our present state of knowledge, the writers have chosen to consider hardness, structure and counted inclusion content as factors not comprised in the term "body," and such factors as raw materials, process of melting, fabricating, etc., as comprised in the term "body." Numerous grades of steels made in several ways have been taken from different sources and have been heat-treated to varying hardness by normalizing and by quenching and drawing. The results, therefore, may be considered to be generally applicable to current engineering steels. Estimation of the economic effectiveness of industrial development projects including mining ones is generally made on the basis of the discrete model of the value changes in time, although the character of these changes is similar to the continuous model. In this paper an attempt has been undertaken to investigate the problem of the value equivalence of both models exemplified by a construction of an underground coal mine. An effort has been made to determine the errors which for different estimation criteria appear in result of the application of the discrete model. Theoretical considerations have been supplemented with practical conclusions.

By comparing two longwall operations, one begun in 1956 and the other in 1960, the author is able to demonstrate the increases in production and performance made possible by longwall mining. These achievements have been brought about by continuous development of longwall mining equipment and associated roof supports. Because of this progress, longwall mining is able to provide, under proper conditions, high production per man-shift, remarkable cost savings, dependable roof control, safe working conditions and truly continuous production. It may seem odd that the title of this paper is not simply "Longwall Mining" but instead "Progress in Longwall Mining." However, the word "Progress" definitely has its place in longwall mining. If it had not been for progress in the development of longwall mining equipment and roof supports, the longwall mining method would not be able to compete in production and performance with modem coal mining machines. The longwall mining method was practiced at the beginning of the century and there were several successful operations in coal fields in Illinois. In those early days of longwall mining, the coal was undercut by hand 2 to 2.5 ft at the bottom of the seam and packwalls were built in the gob to support the roof. The roof eventually subsided and the weight of the subsiding roof was used to ride the face and break the undercut coal. Utilizing natural weight to soften the coal face is still practiced in modern longwall mining; however, the packwalling method has been replaced by the caving method and the roof is now supported by yielding steel roof supports and forepoling steel headers. The purpose of these yielding-type roof supports is to provide a safe working area for the crew along the entire longwall face, to permit continuous mechanical mining across the prop free face, and to provide a strong resistance for the roof by forming an even breaking line at the gob for the roof to cave. Roof supports and associated forepoling headers should be kept as close as possible to the face in order to prevent a caving between face and supports, especially under friable roof. This means that the coal should be extracted in small slices, allowing only a narrow roof area to be exposed and unsupported. The coal planer with its relatively high cutting velocity of 75 ft per min provides such an extraction of coal and has proved its high performance under difficult mining conditions. Since 1951, several longwall faces in southem West Virginia and Pennsylvania which have been equipped with the coal planer and friction-type manual roof supports have been successfully operated. Compared to today's longwall mining, these longwall faces required such a large crew, primarily to handle the roof supports, that the actual high production per shift was charged with too high a labor cost, thereby decreasing the tons per man. Yet, even then the longwall faces outperformed the conventional mining system under the same conditions. In order to demonstrate the progress that has been made in the development of longwall mining, a comparison will be made between a longwall face in Arkansas which was installed in 1956 and a modemized longwall face started in 1960 in southern West Virginia. LONGWALL MINING IN 1956 The 320-ft longwall face was developed in a 32-in. thick coal seam near Greenwood, Ark. The method of mining the 320-ft coal block was the advancing system in which three entries on either side of the face were driven ahead of the advancing longwall face. The face was equipped with a coal planer and a Panzer conveyor; timbering was done with wooden timbers and cribs. The roof supports were set without any pattern. The crew to operate the planer and to handle the roof supports (timbers and cribs) consisted of 15 men per shift. During a period of approximately eight monthsof single shift operating time, the average tonnage produced in this relatively low seam amounted to about 263 tons of clean coal per shift. To show the development in the coal plow from then until now, it should be pointed out that the standard plow was used in this operation. The plow was equipped with rigid bottom bits which could not be adjusted if the plow started to climb, thereby leaving bottom coal to be recovered by pick hammers end causing delays in production. THE usefulness of the electrical resistivity log in determining reservoir characteristics is governed largely by: (I) the accuracy with which the true resistivity of the formation can be determined; (2) the scope of detailed data concerning the relation of resistivity measurements to formation characteristics; (3) the available information concerning the conductivity of connate or formation waters; (4) the extent of geologic knowledge regarding probable changes in facies within given horizons, both vertically and laterally, particularly in relation to the resultant effect on the electrical properties of the reservoir. Simple examples are given in the following pages to illustrate the use of resistivity logs in the solution of some problems dealing with oil and gas reservoirs. From the available information, it is apparent that much care must be exercised in applying to more complicated cases the methods suggested. It should be remembered that the equations given are not precise and represent only approximate relationships. It is believed, however, that under favorable conditions their application falls within useful limits of accuracy.

The constitution and mechanical properties of heat-treated alloys containing up to 10 pct* Ni in Ti have been investigated. The effects of quenching and of various isothermal treatments ale described, and C-curves are presented. The production of the precipitated and the martensitic hexagonal phases on quenching is discussed. MARGOLIN, Ence, and Nielsenl have determined the titanium-nickel phase diagram. A study of the transformations in gas-quenched and tempered powder specimens was made by Polonis and Parr.' Some isothermal transformation work was carried out by Margolin and ~unshah, who determined transformation curves for 4 and 6 wt pct alloys, while Robinson et al.investigated the formation of the w phase in a quenched and tempered alloy, Margolin and Bunshah showed that while a martensitic transformation could be obtained on quench- ing thin sections of a 4 wt pct alloy, a 6 wt pct alloy precipitated a nonmartensitic phase. The present investigation was undertaken to obtain more information on the transformations in quenched, quenched and tempered, and isothermally transformed lump specimens of alloys containing up to 10 pct Ni. Isothermal transformation curves have been determined for 7 and 10 pct alloys and cooling curves have been obtained for quenched alloys containing up to 7 pct Ni. The mechanical properties of 2, 5, and 10 pct alloys were studied, with the object of relating properties to microstructures. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Alloys containing up to 10 pct Ni were prepared from sponge titanium and spectrographic standard nickel by levitation-melting and chill-casting in a split copper mold. BINARY and ternary alloys of iron, nickel and cobalt respond to annealing in a magnetic field by a characteristic change in the shape of their hysteresis 100p.l,2 An increase in retentivity and a decrease in coercive force produced by the magnetic treatment cause the hysteresis loop to approach the appearance of a rectangle. Materials with a rectangular hysteresis loop have made possible the contact-rectifier³ and have greatly improved the performance of pulse transformers4 and magnetic amplifiers." In the best material presently available for these applications, a 50 pct nickel-iron alloy," the desired characteristics are achieved by aligning the preferred crystallographic directions of magnetization along the rolling direction of the tape. The objective of the present study has been to produce rectangular hysteresis characteristics in materials with inherently high saturation. Iron-cobalt alloys, exhibiting saturation values up to 24,000 gausses' appeared to offer promise for the magnetic annealing technique, because they remain magnetic to very high temperatures,8 exhibit favorable magnetostriction properties: and show zero crystal energy at 42 pct cobalt.10 Among the ternary iron-cobalt-nickel alloys,7,11 response to heat treatment in a magnetic field is unfortunately limited to alloys having rather low saturation values.' It appeared interesting nevertheless, to study a series of compositions connecting the optimum composition (50/50) of the binary iron-cobalt system with the "Perminvar" composition (30 pct Fe, 25 pct Co, and 45 pct Ni). Very recently, R. Smoluchowski and R. W. Turner," have shown that under certain circumstances magnetic annealing can produce oriented recrystallization. A combination of this technique with the domain orientation utilized in the present study might well result in further improvements. in Cast-Iron. It has been generally accepted that the presence of silicon in cast-iron leads to the formation of graphite; and this has been explained by saying that the silicon lowers the solvent power of iron for carbon at and somewhat below the freezing-point, so that, in the presence of silicon, the iron is unable to retain in solution or combination the whole of the carbon with which it has united while molten, and therefore expels the excess of carbon in the form of graphite, during and immediately after solidification. Probably the best way to study this question would be to examine pure cast-irons, i.e., those containing nothing but iron, carbon and silicon, which at the same time should have been saturated with carbon when molten. But the data for such a study are not at hand; so we must turn to commercial pig-irons as they are made in the blast-furnace, and before their composition has been changed by remelting. Much evidence has been offered of late, tending to oppose the theory of the action of silicon above set forth. Some of this evidence will be examined here. 1. Mr. Bachman's Results. In particular, Mr. F. E. Bachman† has published a collection of analyses of cast-iron, in which the proportion of graphite at first appears to be nearly independent of the proportion of silicon present. A GREAT deal of work has been done on the rolling of single crystals of iron. Barrett and evensoon studied end orientations of heavily cold-rolled iron crystals and found that some crystals maintained a sharp single orientation during rolling. Others rotated into two or more orientations, and some fragmented and approached the entire polycrystalline texture depending on the original orientation of both the normal and rolling directions. Barrett, Ansel, and Mehl2 studied iron-silicon alloys and found that the addition of silicon to the iron had little effect on heavily rolled polycrystalline material. Dunn3 has extensively studied the cold-rolling and recrystallization of silicon-iron single crystals. Dunn found that for single crystals having initial orientation between (110) [001] and (111) [112], the principalcomponent of the cold-rolled texture is (111) [112]. Koh and Dunn4 studied the cold-rolled textures of single crystals having initial orientations in the range (001) [110] to (111) [IT01 and found that these are stable end orientations. They also found that all orientations having a [110] direction parallel to the transverse direction rotate to either the (001) [110] or the (111) [112] stable end orientation except for orientations near (112) [11], which divide and produce a final texture consisting of (001) [110]and (111) [112] components. Crystals having a (111) <112>-type texture re-crystallized to a (120) [001] or (110) [001]-type texture. Crystals having orientations with a range of (001) to (335) in the rolling plane and [110] in the rolling direction recrystallized5 to a wide spread of the initial orientations resulting from a multiplicity of 30-deg rotations about several (110) poles. The present study was undertaken to relate other orientations of crystals of silicon-iron to their cold-rolling and recrystallization textures, so that one might rationalize polycrystalline recrystallization data on the basis of the known deformation texture and the behavior of single crystals in these orientations. PROCEDURE Samples were obtained from a cylindrical ingot of 3 pct silicon iron prepared as follows: Armco iron was melted with high-purity silicon flakes under an atmosphere of argon to minimize oxidation. The alloy was poured into a special mold to form an ingot which consisted partially of large columnar crystals. Plates were cut from the columnar portions of the ingot with the longitudinal direction parallel to the columnar axes and ground to 0.040 in. thick. The plates were heavily etched to a thickness of 0.032 in. to remove the cold-worked surface. Orientations of seventeen crystals were determined by Laue back-reflection techniques keeping the mean columnar axis as the reference direction. The plate was then cut in two, parallel to the columnar axis. One portion of the plate was rolled at room temperature parallel to the columnar axis to a reduction in thickness of 84 pct. The remaining portion of the plate was rolled also at room temperature across the columnar axis to a reduction of 66 pct, at which point the crystals began to separate at the boundaries. After rolling, nine individual crystals were removed from the strip by cutting along the crystal boundaries with a jeweler&apos;s saw. Fig. 1 shows the original orientations of the six crystals that were straight-rolled and of the three crystals (4, 7, and 8) that were cross-rolled. Each rolled crystal was carefully etched to approximately 0.002 in. thick. Textures of the cold-rolled crystals were determined by use of the diffractometer with a non-integrating sample holder. The pole figures were made for the (200) poles using molybdenum Ka radiation and were plotted by an automatic stereographic projection recorder.&apos; Spurious poles were determined by rerunning portions of the pole figures using strontium oxide to filter out the Ka radiation. The central portions of the pole figures have not been determined. Those interested in training engineers for the mineral industry should consider how their men may fit into the general industrial recovery that now seems well started. One hears occasionally that too many engineers have been produced, especially mining engineers, and that the opportunities for their employment are decreasing. Just what is the situation? Enrollment in American engineering schools has fallen off sharply during the past few years. In 1930-31, the year of peak enrollment in all engineering schools, there were 78,685 engineering students in the United States, but in 1932-33 only 67,584, a decrease of 14 per cent. President Walters, of the University of Cincinnati, in his survey of 74 engineering schools, published in School and Society of Dec. 16, 1933, estimates that the engineering enrollment for 1933-34 is 10 per cent under that of 1932-33, or about 60,000. The situation in the mineral .ethnology schools somewhat parallels this general trend, although not to the same degree. Last year there were 4443 students in mineral technology schools, compared with 4687 in 1930-31, a decrease of 5 per cent. This year, with 3995 students, the enrollment shows a decrease of 10 per cent from last year, or a decrease of 15 per cent from 1930-31. Enrollment has no doubt been influenced by the condition of the mincral industry, just as the enrollment of other engineers has been affected by general industrial conditions. But the mineral industry, which is the first to recover, has not been so seriously affected as have some of the manufacturing industries during the past four years. This is especially true of coal and gold mining, which have been increasing rapidly in their production during the past year and have given employment to more men. Ten years ago, approximately 1,000,000 men were employed in the coal and metal mines and quarries, compared with probably half that number now. The number of mining engineering graduates in 1934 will be 234 and in metallurgy 252. In other words, fewer than 500 graduates are entering these industries the present year. With conditions improving in the mineral industry, coupled with a falling enrollment in our mining schools, there certainly exists an opportunity for young men now beginning their training for this industry.

The detailed analogy between flow systems in porous media and the corresponding poten-tiometric model systems is developed under conditions where it may be desirable to take into account variable pay thickness, variable porosity, and permeability, and also the dependence of the fluid density on pressure. It is shown that in such models it is only necessary that the electrolyte thickness be made everywhere proportional to the millidarcy-feet of the formation. In contrast to the iso-vol type model, previously suggested as a basis for the analogy, the porosity does not enter directly in the construction of the model. It is introduced only in translating the electrical voltage gradient measurements into the equivalent fluid travel times. A discussion of this procedure is given. I NTRODUCTION It is now some 50 years since it was pointed out&apos; that on the basis of Darcy&apos;s law Laplace&apos;s equation must govern the steady state flow of homogeneous fluids through porous media. It is 16 years since the obvious implication of this fact, namely, that such steady state homogeneous flow systems in porous media could be simulated by electrical analogies, was first applied2 to problems of practical interest with respect to oil production. In these initial studies major emphasis was placed on the use of electrolytic models, made of blotting paper, to give a direct and graphic history of the fluid particle motion in regular and infinite well networks. However, it was also noted there that the basic requirement of the model was that it give a potential distribution similar to the pressure distribution in the flow system, and that from the electrical measurement of the potential distribution the fluid particle motion could be graphically or numerically determined. This was demonstrated by application to the five-spot infinite network, for which a conducting metallic sheet was used to establish the equipotential contours. As anticipated, the fluid particle motion computed from these contours agreed well with that given directly by the blotting paper model. For irregular well distributions it was found more convenient to use electrolytic bath analogs rather than metallic sheets. Several investigations,3&apos;4 as applied specifically to cycling well patterns, have been reported with these models, which have become known as "potentiometric models." However, the extremely laborious nature of both the electrical measurements by direct probing and the associated interprctive computations retarded the widespread use of these procedures. The electrical measurements can be accelerated by using a four-probe electrodc,5,6 which provides a means for simultaneously determining the streamline paths along which the fluid particles must move and the voltage gradients along these paths which are proportional to the fluid velocitics. With the increasing frequency of discovery of condensate pools, as drilling depths are becoming greater, the applicability of the potentiometric model to production problems, and especially to the study of well patterns for cycling, has been given a fresh impetus. The prevailing idea seems to be that since pure copper is infrequently used in the cast stlate, there is no reason for trying to establish precise data regarding the properties of the metal in that condition. On the other hand, wrought copper either in the shape of sheets or wire rarely fails in service, except as a result of the action of reducing gases at the annealing temperatures, so there is little incentive to study the properties of the cast shapes —cakes, bars, ingots and billets—for the sake of tracing the causes of failures of the wrought metal to the cast stock. However, about a decade ago, wirebars of American origin often cracked badly while being hot-rolled in mills in Germany. This Icd to four investigations: by E. Seidl and E. Schieboldll by P. Siebe12 by 0. Bauer and G. Sachs,3 and by G. Welter.4 These authors came to the conclusion that failures in hot-rolling were due essentially to the presence of a wide zone of columnar crystals between t&apos;he thin layer of fine crystal5 near the surfaces of the bars and the large but more nearly equiaxed grains of the central core. This macrostructural defect was explained in turn by the probable upward deviation in the temperature of the metal while it was being poured into the molds of the castling machine. More recently, cast shapes of copper were investigated by X. 1&apos;. Allenh and by C. Blazey. Allen examined vertically cast wirebars and hori-zontally cast wedge cakes of electrolytic tough-pitch copper, but only for the distribution of densities; i.e., porosity. Blazey was interested mainly in the mechanism of the variations in electrical conductivity due to cold-work and anneal, but gave introductively an account of the composi-tion and average densities of the tough-pitch horizontally cast Wirebars used. As far as the present writer can tell, no investigation mas under-taken for the sake of presenting a picture of the distribution of mechanical characteristics in the wirebars of copper, or otherwise.

Blazey was interested mainly in the mechanism of the variations in electrical conductivity due to cold-work and anneal, but gave introductively an account of the composi-tion and average densities of the tough-pitch horizontally cast Wirebars used. As far as the present writer can tell, no investigation mas under-taken for the sake of presenting a picture of the distribution of mechanical characteristics in the wirebars of copper, or otherwise.

THE Institute of Metals Division Lecture in 1936, given by R. F. Mehl, on diffusion in solid metals1, was introduced with the statement that "the phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic prob-lems of the metallic state, but in addition to this the process of diffusion is of first importance practically." In view of the scope of that lecture, it does not seem necessary to review the importance, history or present status of diffusion problems. One aspect of the subject of diffusion that has received little attention became of some immediate importance in the course of a study on segrega-tion. When a solid solution alloy freezes, the familiar mechanism of solidification requires that the first nuclei formed be low in solute con-centration, with a resultant normal segregation or coring effect during freezing. Theoretically, diffusion of solute atoms during solidification should result in a homogeneous solid solution. Actually, of course, it is impossible in most binary alloys to obtain a cooling rate that will permit diffusion to eliminate coring in the freezing dendrites. For a given alloy, the extent of diffusion attained up to the point of final solidification will determine the degree of enrichment in solute atoms of the final liquid phase. The flow of this liquid into dendritic contraction channels and the solute concentration of the liquid seem to be the determining factors as to whether the final gross segregation is normal, inverse or absent. The purpose of the present study of diffusion was to determine to some extent the separate diffusion rates of copper and magnesium into pure aluminum with a view to clarifying previous results on segregation in these alloys; i.e., the fact that under similar freezing conditions alumimum-copper alloys segregate inversely and aluminum-magnesium alloys segre-gate normally. Of concomitant interest were the questions of the homogenization times required for segregated ingots or partially melted, i.e., "burnt," structures, and the solution heat-treatment times required for cast, hardenable aluminum-copper and aluminum-magnesium alloys, for worked and annealed structures, and so forth.

The number of installations of propeller mine fans completed during the years of 1936 and 1937 is evidence of the increasing popularity of the propeller fan with the American mining industry. During the period from 1931 to 1936, there were several different low-pressure, low-efficiency propeller fans available, which filled a definite need in replacing inefficient centrifugal fans operated at comparatively low pressure by means of purchased power. Since 1936, however, the trend toward the propeller fan has greatly increased, as propeller fans are now available practically without pressure limitations and capable of efficiencies high enough to warrant replacement of efficient centrifugal fans in many instances. Few manufacturers of propeller mine fans base their fan-operating characteristics upon similar test methods, primarily because of inadequate facilities for testing in the factory and the need of a test code incorporating a calibrated duct or nozzle that makes possible the testing of large propeller fans quickly, accurately and without prohibitive expense and space requirements. As a result, fan manufacturers have resorted to various methods for testing large propeller fans in the factory, and different yardsticks have produced uncomparable and often inaccurate performance data. It is the purpose of this paper to describe and discuss in detail the test procedure of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co., which has been proved both accurate and practical. Fig. 1 shows a plan, a side elevation and two end elevations of the test duct with a propeller fan of the exhaust type in place. Testing propeller fans exhausting permits greater accuracy than testing these fans blowing, because in the former uniform flow conditions are more easily established at Pitot tube stations where fan pressure and air-volume measurements are desired. Any residual rotation remaining in the air discharged from a propeller fan blowing into a test duct must be removed before an attempt is made to obtain accurate pressure and volume readings. Although various devices for straightening the air may be placed between the blowing fan and the volume-measuring station without resulting complications, uniform flow so obtained at the pressure-measuring station necessitates corrective calculations to compensate for duct resistance

A description f the geology and conditions affecting the occurrence and mining of oil; also the prospects of obtaining oil in different parts of the country. THE Colombian highlands consist of three parallel mountain ranges (Fig. 1) called respectively the eastern, central, and western cordillera of the Andes. A segment of the range that forms the backbone of the Isthmus of Panama also extends into Colombia, along the Pacific coast, as far southward as the mouth of the San Juan River. These four mountain ranges furnish the key to the varying climatic conditions and vegetation of the country. The river valleys are hot and covered with dense tropical growth. This is also generally true of the coastal plain, although in the northern portion there are some fairly open stretches where cattle are raised and even small districts where semi-arid conditions prevail. The population of this heavily wooded wet lowland depends almost entirely on river transportation for all intercourse. The elevated mountainous plateaus of the three ranges are more open and more generally cultivated; all traffic is by means of horses, mules, and the burro. The canoe and river-steamer transportation systems of the valleys are connected with the highland system of trails and roads by short cross trails and the few short railroads of the country. As these cross trails must pass through the intermediate foot-hill region, where the heavy rainfall reaches its maximum, they are exceedingly bad and the life of pack animals is short. The oil development of the Magdalena River valley is in this intermediate region, between the river and the sierras, north of Bogotá.

In previous publications1 it was shown that a scalar model of any weighty structure, where the stresses produced are mainly due to gravitational forces, will behave similarly to its prototype if the model and prototype material are the same and the model is placed in a centrifugal field of force (substituted for the gravitational field) which has been increased in the same proportion as the linear model scale is decreased. This principle is now being applied to a study of the behavior of mine structures in an attempt to determine the laws that control them. The importance of using models as a means of solving mining problems has been discussed previously, yet it may be well to reiterate here that this method of research and type of solution have been productive of far-reaching results in other engineering fields, notably those of hydraulics and aerodynamics. Model research is a comparatively cheap and time-saving method of checking practical experience. Up to the present time the best guide to what will happen underground has been the judgment of the man who has observed most and been longest acquainted with the local conditions. His experimental work underground is limited by the elements of cost, time and danger, while failure is seldom permissible. In a model, as in a test tube, all elements that affect the solution of a problem are under definite control. Each element may be varied independently at hill and its effects noted. Experimental work on a small-scale model may therefore be performed at a comparatively small expenditure of time and money, instead of on a full scale in the mine, where the cost, time, and danger elements are necessarily great. The experiments described in this paper are to be considered as part of a progress report and a continuation of Technical Paper 425. One object of the research program is to make each experiment point the way for further research on that particular phase of the general problem. The results and conclusions presented here are therefore not to be considered as final, but arc to be interpreted as

THE large increase in the use of selective flotation as contrasted with the collective flotation of a few years ago has focussed attention on the desirability of achieving accurate control of the pH of mill circuits. Although it is well-known that alkaline circuits result in dropping pyrite and that acid circuits conversely float it, but drop the gangue, there is little that is known, beyond question, ass to the action of the acidity or alkalinity of the circuits. A complete answer is not available at present but experiments -are now in progress at the University of Utah, whose aim is to find out what the effect is on recovery of a change in hydrogen-ion concentration and how this change is brought about. Broadly speaking, a change in hydrogen-ion concen¬tration seems to affect either the mineral surface, as was suggested by A. W. Fahrenwald in his paper "Surface Reactions in Flotation"1 (TRANS. 70, 647) or the attachment of the collecting agent on the mineral surface.
