Ventilation within a coal mine is essential to the welfare of those employed therein, from the standpoint of health, safety, and efficiency. While the saving of life and the preserving of health are the chief reasons for ventilation, efficiency and production are increased. In spite of the fact that we speak of air as having a certain composition, the proportions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide are not fixed, but vary between small limits. The different elements are not chemically united, they are merely mixed and each is free and can be separated with little energy. For this reason air in the mine workings is seldom found in a pure state. Factors that necessitate ventilation in coal mines are those that change the composition of pure air. Contamination of mine air results from the burning of oil-fed flames, the use of explosives, the oxidation of coal, and the liberation of gases by the coal. The extent to which these factors exist governs the size and general plan of the ventilating applianccs required. An efficient ventilating system is one that will furnish air at the working faces in sufficient volume to dilute and render harmless noxious gases and at the same time maintain an oxygen content closely approaching that of pure air. In a well-ventilated mine, the oxygen seldom falls more than 0.5 per cent. below normal. The carbon-dioxide content of the air in the average coal mine will vary from 0.1 to about 0.8 per cent., which amounts are not harmful. Three per cent. of carbon dioxide in air doubles the frequency and the depth of breathing; it is plainly noticeable and if breathed continuously for several hours its effect would probably be harmful. Slight reductions in the oxygen content of the air, such as occur in well-ventilated mines, have no debilitating effect on the worker. A person not exerting himself would fail to observe any unusual physical effect in an atmosphere: containing 17 per cent. of oxygen. This condition, however, or even a condition showing an oxygen content below 20 per cent., would indicate poor ventilation and that the elements which tend to reduce the efficiency of the worker are present, namely water vapor and a high wet-bulb temperature.

Cobalt clearly increased the activity of carbon in austenite and in ferrite. This effect of cobalt on carbon activity Plausibly accounted for the effect of cobalt on accelerating the austenite to pearlite transformation. Cobalt was found to have only a slight effect on carbon diffisivity in various Fe-Co and Fe-Co-W-Mo austenites, but was found to decrease carbon diffusivity in Fe-Co ferrite. THE effect of cobalt in steel is unique in that it is the only element that reduces hardenability by accelerating the austenite to pearlite reaction. The results of several excellent investigations aimed at explaining the role of cobalt have been published,1"7 but a complete understanding is still lacking. In addition, cobalt significantly enhances the resistance to softening or tempering of highly alloyed highspeed and hot-work tool steels. The resistance to tempering is related to the secondary hardening reactions associated with the fourth stage of tempering during which carbides of molybdenum, tungsten, and/or vanadium form in a martensite matrix. The effect of cobalt on secondary hardening reactions in high-alloy tool steel has received considerable attention, but a full explanation of the reactions involved has not been developed. Inasmuch as austenite to pearlite transformation and secondary hardening involve carbide formation, the present authors believed that the role of cobalt in effecting carbon activity and diffusivity in austenite and in ferrite was important to a fuller understanding of the phenomena involved. TO investigate the effect of cobalt on the activity coefficient of carbon in austenite, an approach was used similar to that used by Darken17 in his experiments on the effect of silicon, manganese, and molybdenum on carbon activity and diffusivity in austenite. COULOMB' and Coulomb and Lacombe2,3 have recently discussed secondary recrystallization in soft iron (99.5 pct Fe). They found that the appearance of this phenomenon was dependent on both the presence of impurities and the thickness of sheet specimens. They concluded that impurities such as carbon, sulfur, and oxygen in the soft iron stabilized the matrix structure and allowed growth of a few grains of specific orientations. They also found that secondary recrystallization ceased when the final thickness was small and attributed this complete inhibition of growth in thin sheet to the restraining action of thermal grooves. When purer iron (99.99 pct Fe) was used, normal grain growth but not secondary recrystallization was obtained. On the other hand it is known that the necessary stabilization of the matrix structure for secondary recrystallization in high-purity silicon iron probably does not depend on impurities but more likely results from the specimen thickness effect of Beck et al.,4 according to evidence and ideas advanced by Walter and Dunn,5,6 and Detert.7 Furthermore, Mullins8 has indicated that if a gas-metal surface energy difference exists across a grain boundary equal to or greater than about 3 pct of the grain boundary energy, then such a grain boundary should not become stuck. This paper reviews the subject of gasoline margins, discusses some of the more current marketing problems, and gives some consideration to the main urges to marketing expansion, or overexpansion, in the oil industry. Margins In an earlier paper1, some comparisons were shown for the years 1929, 1930 and 1931, of the margin between the refinery cost of gasoline in Oklahoma, the market price in Oklahoma, and the average retail price in 50 representative cities of the United States. These figures indicated a small margin for the refiner in 1929 between his gasoline cost and the wholesale price, which, however, had turned into a loss by 1931. The margin between either refinery costs or wholesale prices and the retail price in the 50 cities showed a continuous decline during the three years. We have now worked out these figures on a similar basis for a longer period—from 1928 through 1936. Continental Oil Co. has spent more than four years of research on the fundamentals of recovery of potash by solution mining. This work included laboratory investigations of salt solution, brine flow, selective extraction of KC1 from sylvinite, and control of cavity geometry. Laboratory results were expanded by means of a series of field tests, and subjects such as well completion and hydraulic fracturing were added to the investigation. Both single-well and multiwell mining systems were studied in the field work. This paper discusses one field test in which potash was solution mined from a thin sylvinite ore zone in the Carlsbad Potash Basin. A two-well mining system was used for this test.

i\ program has been written which allows fully automatic conversion of data for X-ray intensity, as a function of time, to finished conventional pole figures. The program accepts input data in the serial order in which they are taken and is therefore immediately compatible with automatic data-acquisition devices. From these data taped instructions are prepared for the Calcomp plotter to construct ink-on-paper drawings. Because both Siemens and Norelco pole figure goniometers are used in this laboratory, the program was written for pole figure data obtained from one or more interpenetrating spiral scans during which both the polar angle, @, and the equatorial angle, a, are varied simultaneously and continuously. The reference direction for a scan, that is the point @ = 0 deg, may be chosen coincident with either the normal direction (N.D. figures) or the rolling direction (R.D. figures). In either case the plotted figures are drawn with the transverse direction (a = 0 deg) at the right and the rolling direction at the top. The full, circular, pole figure is drawn as two semicircular figures labeled "front side" and "back side". As presently constituted, the program will also accept data from circular scans taken at constant values of @. In every case the angular coordinates of each intensity entry are generated in the computer from a relatively small number of auxiliary data. The X-ray intensity data are corrected for background scattering by direct subtraction of the intensity measured with 28 set appropriately "off" the Bragg angle. It is possible to enter this correction as an additional spiral scan through the a, @ space; because the background correction does not normally vary rapidly enough to warrant this detailed a determination, the background corrections are entered as one or more auxiliary data. All data are normalized to a multiple of random intensity. The data taken in this laboratory for N.D. figures are normally taken in a reflection geometry from from sheet samples and do not extend beyond <p = 75 deg; for these data random intensity must be determined from separate experiments and entered as auxiliary information. When the auxiliary information is not available, a number is chosen to give intensity values normalized to a scale of 1 to 10. In this laboratory, R.D. figures are based upon hemispherical samples for which data are taken out to @ = 90 deg; for these data random intensity is calculated by direct numerical integration of . sin @ d@ using the trapezoidal rule and the background-corrected values of the input data. Points necessary to the construction of the pole figure are identified by simple linear interpolation between adjacent data points to determine the loci of contour lines. Points lying on a given contour are connected to one another with straight-line segments and the search-calculation-drawing sequence is patterned to assure that different contour lines do not cross, that a single line does not branch, and that lines do not end in space. However, so that there be no ambiguity in the data presentation, all contour lines end at the limits of the input data. Since the curves are constructed of straight-line segments, they are not continuous in their derivatives. However,

The underground losses of oil exceed by hundreds of thousands of barrels all the oil that has been lost in storage, transportation, or refining. The quantity lost is, of course, indeterminate; but when it is considered that the contents of an entire oil field have been excluded from recovery by invading waters, some idea of the amount wasted may be gained. Similarly, enormous quantities of gas have been lost underground. Conservation of the oil, therefore, should start before it is brought to the surface rather than after it is placed in storage tanks. Water is one of the most important causes for underground losses and the operator should give as serious consideration to an underground flood of water as he would to a destructive surface flood. The best insurance, of course, is to have the wells drilled in such a manner that water has no access to the productive oil and gas horizons, and on abandonment the wells should be properly plugged. The encroachment of edge water and the occurrence of waterin;the base of an oil sand present a very serious problem to an oil company sooner or later these waters are bound to cause considerable damage, if they do not entirely destroy the possibilities of further production. Too often, however, a field has been considered to be in a hopeless condition, whereas wells in as bad a condition in other areas have been repaired and the life of the field appreciably lengthened. The corrections are very often suggested by technical study. Very successful results have been accomplished by detailed underground work in the California oil fields, in Cushing, Oklahoma, and in other areas. The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly1 general methods of analyzing oil-field water problems in a producing or in a producing and developing oil field, with a view to suggesting repair work on offending wells. Reference is continually made to producing oil wells; the same general method of procedure, however, should be adopted in a gas field.

The progress of metallurgical practice and the demands made by the engineering industry on our foundries and mills have made the crystalline structure of metals a subject of far more than academic interest. Metals and alloys are made up of crystals. Even if we accept the view, so ably maintained by some metallurgists, that the crystals are separated from one another by an amorphous layer, it remains true that all but a very minute fraction of any metallic mass is crystalline. The conditions which affect the growth of crystals are therefore of importance in metallurgy. It is not only castings whose properties depend on the arrangement of their crystals, for the more we learn of the behavior of forged, rolled and drawn metals, the more certain it becomes that it is profoundly influenced by the size and arrangement of the crystals in the original ingot, determining a structure which may persist in a modified form through a long series of mechanical operations and annealings. This is mainly due to the concentration of much of the impurities in the last portions of the liquid to freeze, so that the boundaries between single crystals or groups of crystals are marked out by a zone of segregated material, differing in properties from the mass, and offering a barrier to diffusion and equalization of composition throughout the whole. The importance of this fact has been fully recognized by steel manufacturers, who have to deal with ingots which are sometimes very large, and are cast at a high temperature, containing impurities which have a marked effect on the properties even when present in very small quantity. For this reason the Iron and Steel Institute has set up a committee to examine the whole question of the heterogeneity of steel ingots,(1)† and a report has been issued, containing an account of the structure of 16 ingots, ranging in weight from 15 cwt. to 172 tons, each of which was sectioned and examined by chemical analysis and by etching. A valuable body of data concerning segregation has thus been collected. MATTERS pertaining to mine ventilation were, taken up at the annual meeting Wednesday morning with E. A. Holbrook in the chair. In the absence&apos; of its author, G. E. McElroy, the first paper, entitled "Economic Size. of Metal Mine %Airways," was read by title by the chairman. The second paper, "Intermittent Mine Ventilation," by Oscar A. Glaeser, was &apos;abstracted by Dan Harrington. It related to metal-mining practice, being inapplicable to coal mining, of course. B. F. Tillson asked how the ,quantity of air was measured and con- trolled in the different splits and Mr. Harrington stated that an anemometer presumably was used and that split- ting was controlled by adjusting the steel doors to the desired position by means of screws. George &apos;S. Rice asked if the fan were underground, and Mr. Harrington replied that it was. Although he had at, one time recommended that it be placed&apos; on the surface, certain factors led the management to keep it underground, a. location that has several advantages in this particular case.

H ORACE VAUGHN WINCHELL was born at Galesburg, Michigan, Nov. 1, 1865, and died at Los Angeles, California, on July 28th of this year, at the age of fifty-seven. Mr. Winchell was one of the conspicuous geologists of his time. It may fairly be said that he was a geologist born and reared. His father, N. H. Winchell, was professor of geology at the University of Minnesota; his uncle, Alexander Winchell, was professor of geology at the University of Michigan. Under both of them Horace studied, graduat-ing at the University of Michigan in 1889. Mr. Winchell at once began that active life in the field which he followed for 34 years and until his death. The first years of his professional life were largely spent in the study of the iron ranges of Min-nesota. In 1898, he re-moved to Butte and became geologist in charge of the geological depart-ment of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. and allied companies. There he remained for eight years. This period covered the trying days of the mining controversies be-tween the Anaconda and associated companies and the Heinze interests, and it fell to Mr. Winchell to direct the geological studies and development in connec-tion with that litigation. Recognizing the importance of careful geological study in the practical operation of mines, he organized and developed the splendid geological department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. This was one of his greatest contributions to the mining industry. Probably no mining company has attached the impor-tance to geological study and continuity of geological mapping in connection with mining operations that the Anaconda company has. It has given broad authority to its geological department and the development of its mines is under the direction of its geologists. The broad vision of Mr. Winchell was responsible for the adoption of this policy, one which is being profitably employed by many other organizations.

The internal surfaces of rocks which are in contact with interstitial fluids are known to influence in some degree the recovery of hydrocarbons from pay zones. Despite the admitted importance of the influence of solid surfaces on hydrocarbon recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks. In this paper a description is given of the apparatus and procedure employed in the determination of the surface areas of sedimentary rocks, and values are reported for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, consideration is given to the Kozeny equation, which relates surface area to porosity and permeability. A colliparison is made between the surface areas as calculated from this equation and the geometrical areas of a series of packs of spherical glass beads. Also, for a group of sandstone cores. Kozeny areas are compared with surface areas as determined by the gas adsorption method employed in this investigation. INTRODUCTION It has long been recognized that many processes which are of importance to hydrocarbon production are controlled in some degree by the extent of the surface of the reservoir rock through which the hydrocarbons move. For example, the recovery efficiency that is obtained in a given reservoir is certainly determined in part by the action of interfacial forces between the reservoir fluids and rock, and this action is influenced in turn by the extent of solid surface. Despite the admitted importance of surface effects to problems of petroleum recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks." It is the purpose of this paper to describe an apparatus which has been employed for the measurement of the surface areas of rock samples and to present the values which have been obtained for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, the relationship of surface area to permeability and porosity, as given by the Kozeny equation, will be discussed. METHOD OF MEASURING SURFACE AREA The method of determining surface areas as employed in this work has previously found wide use in studies of porous solids such as catalysts. The method involves the measurement of the amount of physical adsorption of an inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, on the bare surface of the solid at reduced pressure and constant temperature near the normal liquefaction temperature of the gas. With the aid of the theory of isothermal adsorption as developed by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller,&apos; it is possible to ascertain the amount of gas (and hence the number of molecules) which is required to cover the solid surface with a single layer of molecules. From a knowledge of the covering area per molecule the total surface ares of the solid can be computed. Since the Brunauer. Emmett, Teller (BET) theory has been adequately discussed elsewhere: it will suffice here merely to present their final equation as ordinarily employed for surface-area calculations. This equation relates the volume of gas, V, which is adsorbed at pressure, P, to the liquefaction pressure, Po, of the gas, and to the volume of gas, V.,, that is required to form a monomolecular layer: In this equation C is a quantity which is related to the heats of adsorption and liquefaction of the gas; for a particular solid-gas system at Constant temperature, C is considered to have a constant value. Discussion of the paper of E. B. THORNHILL, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1653 to 1670. D. B. HUNTLEY, Oakland, Cal.-About 15 years ago it chanced to be my lot to cyanide some mill tailings, assaying about $5 per toll in gold and, a few cents in silver. It was in southern Idaho, a. desert region where costs are nearly as large as in central Nevada. We knew that we had a lot of tailings that had been amalgamated and contained about 1 lb. of quicksilver per ton. We knew that we would dissolve some of the quicksilver when we cyanided them with say 0.25 per cent. cyanide solution. We figured (optimistically) that the cyanide would dissolve all of the quicksilver, and we thought to capture all of that, 1 lb. per ton; and we figured out profits as partly gold, partly silver, and partly quicksilver from the recovery in working those tailings. Actually, however, we did this: We had a battery of three large, old-fashioned silver-mill retorts. We retorted our zinc-dust precipitate, recovering about ¼ lb. of quicksilver per ton treated. That was only a loss of 75 per cent. of what we originally had, but still it was profitable by virtue of the conditions. I mention it partly to call attention to the crude old way of doing it, and partly to call attention to how chemical methods for recovering quicksilver have developed in the last 15 years.

The preparation of a good paper fre¬quently leads to a reorientation of the author&apos;s thoughts, and publication con¬tributes much to the professional standing of the author. Members are urged to submit papers presenting the results of their work. Attention to the following sugges¬tions will greatly further the prompt and efficient handling of manuscripts. 1. THIS paper presents some of the results obtained during the field season of 1919 while mapping, in detail, the stratigraphy of the Gogebic Range in Wisconsin. The detailed stratigraphic section for the range was first published, in 1919, by W. 0. Hotchkiss,1 State Geologist of Wisconsin. The idea of the continuity of the definite succession thus established was the result of underground work in the productive part of .the range in Michigan and Wisconsin, where most of the required data also were obtained. The bulk of the range in Wisconsin is heavily covered by drift; in fact, there is but one satisfactorily exposed section across the entire formation; few partial sections, and only scanty outcrops of any size. Evidently mapping of the detailed members of the formation could only be established at a few points; and if from these small areas the unexposed portions were to be mapped by projection, the only apparent method for projection was straight-line interpolation modified or supported by data from the scanty outcrops and from test workings. It was found that by tracing a magnetic line, the position of which in the formation may be determined from test pits and outcrops, the projection of that member through the drift-covered areas can be accomplished. The magnetic line serves as a datum horizon within the formation to which reference may be made in correlating outcrops and ledge matter thrown from test workings. The foot wall is easily located also, and from the two datum horizons thus available and the known proportional thickness of the several members in the type sections, outcrops and artificially exposed ledges can be correlated by lithological characteristics. As a result, the tracing-of magnetic lines became the basis of our work on the stratigraphy and we were able to carry the mapping of detailed members throughout the length of the range. The beginning of the war and the events leading up to it precipitated a near crisis in the aluminum industry. Demands for the metal reached proportions far beyond the prewar production capacities and, in addition, the submarine menace seriously curtailed the importation of bauxite from South America, hitherto a chief source of high-grade ore. The situation required an intensive search for domestic ore to augment the reserves and in October 1941 Congress directed the Department of the Interior to investigate the extent, mode of occurrence, and quality of bauxite in the United States. In December of that year the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey began the search for bauxite in Arkansas, where more than go per cent of the domestic ore had been produced and where the greatest amount of bauxite was known to occur. The program involves the geophysical and geological investigation of the Arkansas bauxite region and the core drilling of areas considered favorable for the occurrence of bauxite deposits. Cores taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone are sampled and analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Little Rock. The information from each of the deposits discovered is then assembled, the bauxite is graded with respect to its possible utility, tonnage estimates are made, and the whole is presented in the form of a war minerals report. Thirty-eight new bauxite deposits had been discovered and investigated at the end of the calendar year 1944, and the presence of several others had been indicated by the drilling. More than 5000 holes had been drilled throughout the bauxite region, and more than 60,000 chemical analyses had been made of samples taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone. A study of the chemical analyses led to certain general conclusions not only with regard to the chemical composition of Arkansas bauxite, but also with regard to its component minerals. Charts and diagrams based on these conclusions have been developed for practical use by the Bureau of Mines: (I) to serve as a check against laboratory analyses, (2) to present tonnage estimates of ore bodies based on mineral composition, (3) to illustrate the relationship of tonnages of bauxite to the alumina, silica, and iron content, and (4) to serve as a control for mining operations by providing a means for quick estimates of the value of the ore from a partial analysis of its chemical constituents. The use of charts and diagrams similar to those discussed in this paper-- is not new. The use of the trilinear diagram for studying the ultimate analyses of coals as of proposed by Ralston in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 93 (1915) showed that the various ranks of coal fell in different areas on the diagram and that volatile matter, calorific value and other properties could also be plotted by the use of contours. The information from each of the deposits discovered is then assembled, the bauxite is graded with respect to its possible utility, tonnage estimates are made, and the whole is presented in the form of a war minerals report. Thirty-eight new bauxite deposits had been discovered and investigated at the end of the calendar year 1944, and the presence of several others had been indicated by the drilling. More than 5000 holes had been drilled throughout the bauxite region, and more than 60,000 chemical analyses had been made of samples taken from the bauxite-kaolin zone. A study of the chemical analyses led to certain general conclusions not only with regard to the chemical composition of Arkansas bauxite, but also with regard to its component minerals. Charts and diagrams based on these conclusions have been developed for practical use by the Bureau of Mines: (I) to serve as a check against laboratory analyses, (2) to present tonnage estimates of ore bodies based on mineral composition, (3) to illustrate the relationship of tonnages of bauxite to the alumina, silica, and iron content, and (4) to serve as a control for mining operations by providing a means for quick estimates of the value of the ore from a partial analysis of its chemical constituents. The use of charts and diagrams similar to those discussed in this paper-- is not new. The use of the trilinear diagram for studying the ultimate analyses of coals as of proposed by Ralston in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 93 (1915) showed that the various ranks of coal fell in different areas on the diagram and that volatile matter, calorific value and other properties could also be plotted by the use of contours. J. L. JONES,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-If a nickel anode is cast under commer-cial conditions, will it contain nickel oxide? Will the nickel oxide affect the rate of corrosion in a double sulfate solution; or will the nickel oxide dissolve in a double sulfate solution? I would also like to ask whether a 98 per cent. pure nickel anode will corrode as fast as a 96 per cent. nickel anode; whether electrolytic nickel will corrode less rapidly than nickel containing a small amount of carbon; and whether the materials some-times used in coating molds for casting nickel anodes will affect the rate of corrosion of the anode? In other words, whether an electrically non conducting coating is likely to be present that will prevent the nickel anode from corroding rapidly. JOHN F. THOMPSON.-The nickel oxide will not dissolve in the double sulfate solution, as far as we know. We do not make the ordinary nickel anode of commerce, but we supply nickel to the nickel anode makers. Those makers almost invariably buy a high-carbon nickel shot, ranging around 0.45 per cent. carbon. In their process, they even further, car-burize it so as to get nickel that will melt easily and be fluid enough to fill the mold, so that the ordinary cast anode on the market is unquestion-ably oxide free. The only time that such an anode will have oxide will be through an error in melting. Some cupola makers of anodes have had trouble with oxidation, but as a rule the anodes are thoroughly carburized; so much so that they probably carry a couple of per cent. of carbon of which around. 1.6 per cent. is graphite.

Hadfielcl steel has been studied by transmission electron microscopy to determine the microsl.rtic-ture of the cold-worked material, which has been a subject of controversy for many years. The presence of fcc deformation twins in specimens deformed in tension, by hamnzering, and by explosive -shock loading at room temperature lzas been established by electron diffraction. No evidence of a mar tensite was detected in any of the speciwens. Small amounts of E martensite were idenLified in the hamnleved specimens. DESPITE numerous researches on Hadfield steel since its discovery in 1882, there is still disagreement on the nature of transformations in the cold-worked material. Collette el al.,&apos; using X-ray and electron diffraction, have found evidence for stacking faults, E martensite, and a martensite in Hadfield steel deformed in tension at room temperature. Nishiyama and Simizu,&apos; using electron microscopy, have found stacking faults and E martensite in hammered Hadfield steel. White and Honeycombe have concluded from X-ray diffraction that Hadfield steel remains fully austenitic even after severe cold work at -196 Previous work by the author, indicating the presence of a, martensite in deformed Hadfield steel, was in error due to a faulty interpretation of the electron-diffraction patterns. Various workers,5&apos;7 over the years, have speculated on the presence of deformation twins in Hadfield steel, largely from such circumstantial evidence as the persistence of slip bands with repeated polishing and etching, the presence of serrations in the stress-strain curve, and the absence of evidence of a martensite by X-ray measurements. The advent of electron-transmission microscopy and se- lected-area diffraction has made possible the positive identification of fine deformation twinning. PROCEDURE For tensile tests, standard ASTM specimens of 2-in. gage length, ground from 0.12-in. Hadfield steel sheet, were solution-treated at 1050°C for 30 min in a salt bath, to avoid decarburization, and water-quenched. The grain size was about 0.01 sq mm.
