THE (001) planes have been reported as the cleavage planes in body-centered cubic metals such as alpha-iron and tungsten.' However, in molybdenum, which is also body-centered cubic, experimental X-ray evidence indicating a similar cleavage plane still seems lacking. Tsien and Chow" observed microscopically in the extension at around 1000°C of molybdenum single crystalline wires 0.25 mm in diam that the fracture plane seemed to be parallel to the operative slip plane, which appeared to be (110) at that temperature. Zapffe' pointed out from fractographic study of polycrystalline molybdenum that "although the transgranular pattern is characteristically non-crystallographic, patterns occasionally reveal {100} cleavage." This has been generally assumed to be the case at ordinary temperatures. In the present experiments, a single crystal of Fansteel molybdenum, Vs in. diam x 2 in. long, prepared by the methods described by Chen, Maddin, and Pond" was fractured at room temperature by bending. Location THE hydro-electric plant of the Peninsular Power Co., is located at what is commonly known as Lower Twin Falls on the Menominee River. This location is about 33 miles north of the city of Iron Mountain, Mich. The principal points of delivery of electric energy from this plant are in the mining regions adjacent to Florence, Wis., and Iron River, Mich., and in the cities of Iron River and Iron Mountain. The hydro-electric plant at Twin Falls and the substation of the Iron Mountain Electric Light & Power Co. are connected by a 6,600-volt transmission line carried on steel towers and steel poles, the latter being used within the city limits. The plant at Twin Falls and the substation at Iron River, about 36 miles distant, are connected by a 66,000-volt, duplicate, three-phase transmission line, supported on steel towers. At Iron River, are located a 1,500-kw. auxiliary steam plant, and the substation, from which the current is distributed to the mines in this vicinity. A description of the auxiliary plant, main and customers' substations, and of the main and secondary transmission lines, follows later in this paper.

By use of the frequency response method with a radioactive tracer, it was possible to determine fluid dispersion and distribution in a natural consolidated and an unconsolidated medium. Measurements were made in a linear flow system at oleic saturations of 69 per cent in the consolidated medium, and 100 per cent in both media. Dispersion and distribution were obtained by measuring the amplitude attenuation and the phase velocity of sinusoidal waves with a dual monitor apparatus. The gamma ray emissions permitted in situ measurements at any distance along the porous samples. One result of importance was that the effective diffusivity increased as the wave length increased. As a consequence, a dispersion coefficient appropriate for the injection of large slugs might exceed the value measured by use of small slugs. Since flow models based solely on fluid velocity and an effective diffusivity coefficient imply that the diffusivity should be independent of frequency, such representations were not adequate for the data of this study. A comparison was made with a capacitance model of porous media with deadend PVs, but even this model was not completely adequate. By using attenuation and phase velocity data, fluid dispersion can be predicted without postulating a differential equation satisfied by the tracer concentration, thereby eliminating the need of a complicated model to represent dispersion. INTRODUCTION The flow of similar miscible fluids through a porous medium can be fairly adequately described by two parameters: the average fluid velocity and the effective diffusivity.1-3 It has been pointed out recently, however, that significant discrepancies exist between this representation and the experimental data.4-7 An improved agreement can be obtained by introducing additional parameters based on the concept of dead-end pores. The purpose of the present investigation was to find out whether the frequency response method could be used to measure the relevant parameters. The method was used in the following form. A stream of fluid was flowed at a constant rate through a sample of porous material and the concentration of a radioactive tracer in the fluid was varied sinusoidally at a fixed frequency. The effects of flow through a porous medium are a decrease in the amplitude of the concentration wave and an increase in the velocity of the peaks of the waves above the average velocity. Attenuation and phase veIocity of the waves were measured as a function of frequency and fluid velocity. The simple two-parameter model implies that the diffusivity should be independent of frequency. Data reported in this paper show that the diffusivity decreases as the frequency increases. Hence, as shown also by many others, the two-parameter model is not completely adequate. Coats and Smith 5 used two additional parameters in their model: the volume of the dead-end pores and the rate of mass transfer between dead-end pores and the flowing stream. Their capacitance model of a porous medium containing some stagnant fluid, to which transfer occurs by molecular diffusion, did not explain the dispersion results of either the present study or of theirs. Instead, the capacitance effect can be better described as the result of extreme velocity variations within the pores of the medium, with transfer between the velocity zones by convection. EXPERIMENTAL PREPARATION OF POROUS MEDIA Data reported here were obtained with a natural Berea sandstone, and with two packings of 20/25 mesh sand. (communication to the Secretary*):¬ Mr. Stevens refers to an explanation of parallel jointing by W. 0. Crosby, which I noted when reading one of his excellent text books. It seemed to me earthquakes were not a satisfactory explanation, and I looked up several authorities; but I never realized how small the usual amplitudes were until Mr. Stevens presented his paper. Several letters to the U. S. Geodetic Survey showed me there were very few records of tidal movements of earth crust in the United States. Altitude and latitude would be influencing factors; but this diurnal movement must exceed earthquake amplitudes, besides being more nearly universal. My inquiries brought the answer that the major directions of jointing had not been extensively tabulated. If major directions of jointing were recorded-with notes as to angle with mountain chain, or North Star, and distance between joints, with nature of rock and maximum and minimum tidal up-heaval-some interesting relations might be made manifest.

THE present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and' adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semikilled .as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. ADDING SULPHUR AS A SULPHITE These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the steel by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which-upon decomposition-forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig. I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig. 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium . bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast-that is, before rollingand were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide -inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. z shows that the sulphide inclusions are more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. SO commonplace that they are seldom noticed, mining-machinr, bits have a definite and important bearing on the cost of coal production. At the average mine many thousands of bits are used during the year. The actual cost represented by the purchase of the bits used, as well as that of sharpening and handling them, represents a considerable sum of money. From the point of view of indirect costs they are important, as the lack of good bits at a mining machine can seriously impair production. Good bits tend to ensure an adequate supply of coal. Classes OF Bits Mining-machine bits may be divided into three general classes, based on shape and method of use: (I) chisel, (2) pick-point and (3) one-use. The chisel and pick-point bits are shown in Fig. I. The so-called "chisel" bits were made of steel of various sizes and were sharpened to a wide chisel cutting edge. Few of this type of bit are used, except in places where coring is very bad. Sometimes chisel bits are used with standard bits to help cut out the core. The "pick-point" bit is widely used today. Normally it is made from ½ by I-in. steel, is about 4½ in. long when new, has a rake angle of about 25°, a front clearance of about 23O, a side clearance of approximsteji 8".' There are many variations in the shape of this bit, depending on the ideas of the individual that may be dressing the dies of the bit machine. This bit has been generally used for many years and at present, in one form or another, is by far the most popular bit used in coal mines. This bit usually is made from 0.85 carbon steel, although in recent years some alloy-steel bits have made their appearance. At present, carbon-steel bits are frequently tipped in. hard facing materials. A third class of bits might be called the L'one-use" bit; that is, a small bit that is used once and then thrown away. These bits have two or three points, are usually made from 0.85 carbon steel and sometimes from higher alloys. Recently some. of them have been tipped with hard facing material. GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.:-I presume I am one of the few who are exceedingly interested in microscopic work, and I am sure we have all enjoyed this paper very much. I will not attempt to express my own feelings in regard to it beyond saying that it seems to me that this sort of investigation and study has been overlooked and slighted, and its possibilities are very great. There are one or two, details which impressed me, because they were novel to me, and one was the development of secondary galena with dull luster. I have never seen any galena which seemed to be secondary, and have never seen any that was secondary or primary that did not have a bright luster. KIRBY THOMAS, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *) :-The present-day mining engineer is expected to " see into the ground farther than the point of the pick " and he is justified in making free claim to his ability to do so. Mr. Apgar has recorded the development of the application to the work of the engineer of a very useful but tardily recognized instrument-the petrographic microscope, an instrument which is helping to shatter the proverbial "point of' the pick" limitation-and he has shown its use and its possibilities very clearly. Some further field examples of the use of the microscope in engineering problems may add to the appreciation of Mr. Apgar's scholarly paper. In exploration by diamond drills in the Sudbury, Ontario, nickel district it is often of great importance to determine when the drill has passed out of the norite and into the foot-wall formation. Structural calculations may give a clue to the expected point of contact, but the variations are considerable, and, since to stop the drill before reaching the contact is futile, and too continue beyond it is needless, it becomes of theoretic and economic importance to determine positively the lithological nature of the corer at critical stages in the work. In some places the foot-wall is an earlier norite, only distinguishable from the nickel norite (Sudbury-: ite), by means of an examination of the rock slides with a petrographic; microscope. Again, certain diabase dikes which cut the norite and. the foot-wall formations cannot be easily or with certainty distin-

ECONOMIC waste caused by mine fires may become considerable,15 especially if a fire is allowed to spread or temporarily to get beyond control. It is important, therefore, to act promptly whenever a fire is suspected and to make every action count. To contribute toward its extinction effectively it is necessary to know at the earliest possible moment, and continuously thereafter, what is happening at the seat of the fire, which may be in a remote or inaccessible area, and also to recognize what may be expected as a result of any proposed combative measure. In combatting a fire the mining engineer and the chemist should cooperate, first deciding upon the course of action to be taken and then drawing upon the mining engineer's intimate knowledge of the physical structure of the fire area, the cost and time required to carry out proposed operations, and the probable efficiency with which these operations could be performed, and upon the chemist's knowledge for the results to be expected therefrom. After the initial steps to be taken have been decided, it devolves upon the mining engineer to see that they are carried out and upon the chemist to evaluate the results and to keep the mining engineer continuously informed in regard to a variety of matters-such as the composition and toxic or asphyxiating properties of the atmosphere in which the men may be working, whether the fire is increasing or decreasing in intensity and its probable temperature, the quantity of air leakage and the explosion hazards of the fire area. The purpose of this paper is to discuss what the chemist can and cannot contribute as a member of the fire-fighting personnel. The technical literature contains several hundred papers relating directly and indirectly to mine fires, and this fact alone is testimony to the complex nature of the phenomena involved in the birth, life, and final demise of a fire. A fire may be stopped (I) by preventing oxygen from reaching the coal or (2) by removing the conditions necessary for the rapid reaction of coal with oxygen; i.e., decreasing the temperature. All methods of prevention or control. necessarily must be based upon one or the other, or both, of these two principles. . The chemistry of a fire may be understood readily if the low-temperature oxidation of coal is considered as a starting point; then oxidation at higher temperatures (or combustion) ; and with these, the composition of the solid and gaseous products resulting from the oxidation or from the effects of the heat liberated. This discussion refers particularly to Pennsylvania anthracite, although much of the material applies equally well to coals of lower rank. CORRUGATED sheet zinc has been used abroad for a great many years as a roofing material. In this country it has been in use for about 10 years. From the outset it was recognized that zinc sheets required closer spacing of the supporting purlins than steel sheets. Exact data regarding safe maximum fiber stresses were not available, however, and on occasions the span used was excessive and the sheets sagged. This paper describes both service and laboratory tests to determine safe maximum fiber-stress values for various grades of zinc for use in calculating the proper purlin spacings for any gage and profile under given loading conditions. These tests consist of laboratory loading tests on full-size roof sections over extended periods of time; of actual roof installations erected in conformity with the indications of the laboratory tests and observed over a period of years; of careful determinations of the apparent elastic limit of several grades of zinc, and finally of static tests1 (so-called creep tests) to determine the rate of flow of zinc under a variety of static tensile stresses at definite temperatures. Certain of the individual tests extended over a period of more than two years.

One of the major difficulties in predicting the performance of oil reservoirs from their early pressure history lies in the uncertainty of estimating the volume of the liquid hydrocarbons contained in them. As a first step in filling this need, an equation was developed to determine the Inolal liquid volume of pure hydrocarbons over a wide range of temperature and pressure. This maximum deviation was that found when comparing the calculated and observed values over a temperature range of 86° to 482°F and a pressure range from the bubbl-point ro 10,000 psis. The equations expressing the correlation for. mixrurrc were developed from 647 experimental measure-rilents of volume on 47 bouom-hole samples covering ; temperature range of 72" to 250°F and a pressure znge from bubble-point ro 5,000 psig. The average absotute deviation was found to he 1.6 per cent with the maximum for any measurement of 4.9 per cent. INTRODUCTION Accuratc information of the pressure-volume-temper-iiture behavior of hydrocarbon liquids is of considerable importance in the field of both applied and theoretical science and, especially, in the solution of petroleum reservoir engineering problems. These PVT relationships can be expressed graphically, in tabular form or as equations of state. Equations of state for gases have been developed based on the ratio of pressure, temperature and volume to the pressure, temperature and volume at the critical points of the hydrocarbons. These equations have been successful in yielding values fairly accurate for reservoir engineering purposes. For liquids, however, relations of this type are more complex and have not yielded useful results. The composition of reservoir liquids is normally expressed in terms of the moles of hydrocarbons C,? C,. C,. elc, per mole of mixture. The composition must include the fraction of a mixture such as C,,, which cannot be separated with reasonable time and effort into specific hydrocarbons. Although there are several equations of state having variable degrees of accuracy applicable to pure liquid hydrocarbons, none includes a means for estimating the volume of mixtures as a function of temperature. pressure and composition expressed in this manner.

THE development of the modern blast furnace began more than one hundred years ago, with the abandonment of the small hillside furnaces. Its development, especially during the past 50 years, has been accomplished through a rapid succession of enlargements and improvements. The remarkable growth in furnace output during this period is a tribute to the engineers and operators who have constantly endeavored to build larger and more efficient blast furnaces. The blast-furnace operators and their mechanical and electrical maintenance staffs have originated most of the furnace improvements as a result of their practical operating experience. FURNACE LINES About 50 years ago furnaces consisted of hearths about 11 ft. in diameter, which merged into rather high flat boshes, with no cylindrical section between the bosh and inwall and no cylindrical section at the stock line. Since then the lines of the furnace invariably have included a cylindrical section above the bosh and a cylindrical section at the stock line. Notable increases have been made in both hearth diameters and furnace heights. During the past 10 years hearth diameters in new and replaced furnace stacks have rather consistently fallen within the range of 25 to 28 ft. while their heights have varied between 100 and 106 ft. The lines of most large furnaces using Mesabi ores have followed a fairly uniform pattern (Fig. I) in which the principal dimensions for 25-ft. hearth furnaces are as follows: [Hearth diameter 25 ft. o in. Height of bosh 10 ft. o in. Bosh angle 8 1 ½° Diameter top of bosh 28 ft. o in. Inwall batter per foot 15/16 Stock-line diameter 19 ft. 6 in. Large-bell diameter 14 ft. 6 in. Height from iron notch to top ring casting 100 ft. o in.] In determining the size of a new furnace for the replacement of an existing stack or for an addition to productive capacity, it is not possible to formulate a procedure that can always be followed. Local conditions, requirements as to capacity, available raw materials and prospects for future expansion dictate the size of such proposed improvements or additions. However, where the immediate requirements indicate a stack or furnace of a certain productive capacity, and the future prospects indicate that more capacity can be utilized, it is well to consider building the furnace for the ultimate capacity rather than to install a smaller hearth with provision for future enlargement. The decision to build the larger hearth and stack for the ultimate capacity probably will require no greater initial investment, since the saving in the cost of brickwork will about offset the greater cost of the hearth jacket, tuyere breast and bosh bands. For the technological age in which we live, with the constant goal of further improvement in the efficiency of mechanized systems, the need for a replacement of the antiquated drill and blast method of shaft construction has been recognized. For over a decade now; the trend in shaft construction has been toward large diameter bored shafts using either raise boring methods or more flexible, rodless "down the hole" boring machine. The limits of conventional shaft sinking have been reached, the mining regulations are more stringent, and the environmental agencies more aggressive, all contributing to the growing need for development of the rodless shaft boring machine. In the last three years in the United States, world shaft construction records have been achieved using a V-Mole machine, designed by Mirth GmbH of West Germany, using American electrics and hydraulics. Shafts of 7.0 meters (23 feet) diameter, totaling 2,255 meters (7,400 feet) in depth have been constructed at high advance rates, yet with unusually low accident rates. Bearing in mind the high cost of today's mining labor and the inherent danger associated with conventional shaft sinking, this alternative method of shaft construction achieves a fast, competitive, low manpower requirement, whilst enhancing a safer environment for the labor force. Recent results have proven that program time savings of 50 percent over conventional shaft sinking can be achieved which can be directly translated into improved client cash flow projections and more accurate project budgeting.

PARTICULAR interest in the ventilation of deep mines, especially those in South Africa, has been created by a very complete system of cooling of the world's deepest mine, the Turf shaft of the Robinson Deep ill Johan-nesburg. The writer visited this mine in January, 1936, and again in 1937. During these visits and subsequently, a considerable part of the theory involved in rock cooling in tunnels was developed and this has been checked by practical observations of the rates of rock cooling made within mines. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the method of attack of the mine problem. The cooling or air conditioning of mines by the use of mechanical refrigeration was not wholly new 1-5 when the Robinson Deep installation was made. The first mine to be cooled was the Morro Velho mine, in Brazil. The first installation in this mine was put into operation in December 1920, the refrigerant being ammonia.5 The surface cooling gave considerable benefit but it proved inadequate as greater depths were reached, therefore in 1929 two centrifugal refrigerating machines were installed at the 6000-ft. level. These were used in conjunction with the surface cooling system to furnish additional cooling at the lower levels. This later installation used Carrene as a refrigerant. This nonflammable refrigerant, having a boiling point of 104° at sea level, insured reasonable safety, since all parts of the machine operated At subatmospheric pressure. Very favorable reports have been received on the effectiveness of this installation, but no recent data are available. An interesting feature of that plant is that the condenser water is cooled by spraying it into the exhaust air from the mine at the base of the ventilation upcast, which permits the water to be cooled within a few degrees of the wet-bulb temperature of the air entering the upcast, and the only water that has to be supplied for condensing purposes is that lost by evaporation, or about 0.5 per cent of the volume circulating through the condenser. This plan affords an ideal means for the removal of the heat load from the refrigerating system, and of course also from the mine itself. PRECISION lattice-constant measurements have been widely used in the study of cubic solid solutions but as yet have been rarely applied to noncubic solid solutions. (See, however, references I and 2.) With the high precision at present attainable in the measurement of lattice constants, the X-ray method should be readily applicable to noncubic solid solutions. In the work reported here, hexagonal close-packed magnesium was used as the solvent and either lead, bismuth or gold as the solute. In the magnesium-lead and mag-nesium-bismuth systems the a and c lattice constants were determined as a function of composition, densities were calculated from these lattice-constant data, these theoretical densities were compared with those directly measured and the solid solubility limit was determined on quenched specimens over a considerable range of temperature. In the magnesium-gold sys-tem, the solid solubility is very small but we have obtained an indirect check on the solubility limit previously reported.

Discussion of the paper of DR. L. EDELEANU, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2313 to 2332. F. W. BUSHONG,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-This process of extraction is particularly advantageous in the case of Roumanian oil, on account of its high aromatic content. I have prepared a paper, which will appear probably next month in the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, describing a series of two-degree fractions of oil from the Nowata field in Oklahoma. I have made extractions with liquid sulphur dioxide in accordance with Dr. Edeleanu's method, and found that the Oklahoma oils, for instance the kerosene fractions, are purified in this way, although the quantity taken out does not at all compare with that taken out of the Roumanian oil. I have made careful analyses of separate fractions, before and after extraction, and they show a very distinct fractional separation-. I like the distinction, brought out by Dr. Day in previous discussions, in regard to oils, rather than oil, and his beautiful illustration of fractionation. Just as fuller's earth, and other clays, will enable us to obtain lower-boiling fractional portions of the oils, and eventually retain a residuum which is hard to get rid of, or to remove, so there is an advantage to be gained by the use of a reagent which begins at the other end by taking out these last constituents first, namely, ozone. I have also analyzed the ozonides and they are derivatives of hydrocarbons very much poorer. in hydrogen than we have heretofore supposed. Similar results have been obtained with Roumanian, Russian, and Italian petroleums. Furthermore, I have prepared ozonides from a fraction of Oklahoma oils, both before and after ex-' traction with liquid sulphur dioxide, and found that the ozonide obtained from the extract is the same as that precipitated out of the original oils. In other words, the residual substance, which the fuller's earth retains, is the one first thrown down by the use of ozone, but it may also be extracted by liquid sulphur dioxide- and be thus separated in apparently unaltered condition. The analysis of this extract corresponds to the formula C15H20, which is surprising, since it is lower in hydrogen content than we have been in the habit of considering among the constituents of our oils. The extract was probably contaminated with other hydro-carbons, but I think it is unquestionable that we must look for hydro-carbons in petroleum which correspond to a formula at least -as low in hydrogen as C15H2o, and possibly even as low as C15H16.
