It has been repeatedly questioned whether estimates of oil reserves are of any practical value, as the greater number of such calculations previously made have subsequently been proved to be grossly inaccurate. But even admitting partial justification for such statements, it must be evident that some idea, however approximate, of the available reserves of essential minerals is of vital importance in mapping their development and the future trend of the related industries, particularly if it is kept constantly in mind that these estimates—which are never intended as a final word—must be continually subject to revision in accordance with the changes in their component factors. The value of these estimates, therefore, hinges on the clear understanding that they can only apply within the limited time when the controlling factors remain unchanged. It should be understood, however, that while estimates of possible and probable oil deposits are as a rule but idle conjectures, appraisals of proven oil reserves can undoubtedly be made with an ever-increasing degree of accuracy. And it is with this in mind that in the present study the endeavor has been to estimate only the world's proven oil reserves—the oil that yet remains underground in the producing fields—and their logical extensions, and to leave out of consideration the questionable volume of the probable and possible oil reserves. In Table 1 the countries at present producing oil in commercial quantities are listed in the order of the magnitude of their proven reserves. As shown in the table, the world's proven oil reserves are estimated at over 24 billion barrels, while the total production to the end of 1932 aggregates nearly 23 billions. Past production represents, therefore, 48 per cent, and proven reserves approximately 52 per cent of the total. About 61 per cent of the reserves are located in the American continent and close to 33 per cent in the Near East fields of Russia, Iraq and Persia. It is interesting to note that the proven reserves in the important producing regions almost equal if not exceed their production to date. The Mexican fields are a remarkable exception in this respect since they produced over 135 billion barrels and have proven reserves estimated at only 300 million barrels.

Y.:—Do I understand correctly that the rolls are at first simple cylinders, one longer than the other, and that flanges are subsequently formed on the longer roll as the result of wear only ? Mr. Payne :—The flanges are formed by the wearing of the shorter roll into the other, which is about an inch longer. When the roll-shells are new, the longer one has machined at each end a ridge about 1/8 in. or 0.25 in. higher than the face. These slight projections help to center and steady the rolls, by locating the flanges in advance. Possibly they might be left off at the start; but Mr. Frazee has found it better, in machining the new roll-shells, to turn such small flanges upon the longer one. In his practice the feed-stream is extended a short distance beyond the two ends of the shorter roll-shell. This allows a small amount of crushing to be done between the flange-ftices and the vertical ends of the shorter roll-shell, which prevents any ridges from forming at the ends of the shorter roll-shell.

In a comparison of the creep -rupture properties of nickel in air arid in vacuum there is a reversal in relative strengths with variations in stress. At low stresses the properties are better in air while at high stresses they are better in vacuum. In the early stages of creep in a high stress test the specimen in air nzay have the lower creep rate but the one in vacuum is creeping at a lower rate in the later stages. A mechanism, involving two competing processes in terms of oxidation strengthening and weakening by surface-energy reduction, is proposed to explain these reversals. It had generally been assumed that, relative to their properties in air, the high-temperature strengths of metals would be increased in an inert atmosphere as a result of the elimination of the deteriorating effects of oxidation. However, several recent investigations have shown that the creep strength may be greater in air than in nonoxidizing gases. Pickus and Parker1 found that the creep rate of nickel was lower in air than in hydrogen or nitrogen. Internal oxidation was mentioned by Shepard and Schalliol as a possible cause for the longer creep life of Hastelloy C in air than in vacuum or helium. Sweetland and Parker, who observed lower creep rates for aluminum and copper in air than in helium, discuss the possible applicability of the dislocation-barrier mechanism to explain their results. Surface oxide layers may interfere with the escape of dislocations through the surface or with their generation there. In addition to showing the strengthening in air of low-alloy and stainless steel, and nickel and cobalt-base alloys, shahinian4 presented notch-effect data which indicate the role of stress concentrations; alloys of relatively low ductility were more sensitive to atmosphere strengthening when notched specimens were used. Although Bleakney's copper wires had a lower reduction of area in air than in vacuum, it is difficult to interpret his results in terms of strength changes since the stresses employed were not measured. In contrast to these data showing the strengthening in air, a number of investigations, most at relatively low temperatures, have demonstrated that the environment may cause a decrease in strength. These results are generally explained in terms of the effect of environment on surface energy. In a review of the subject, Benedicks and Harden use the concept of atomic bonding to explain how the adsorption of impurities would decrease the energy of a clean surface. A decrease in surface energy would facilitate the propagation of cracks or extension of the surface. Use of this mechanism is made by sato7 to explain the weakening of steel specimens bent in various liquids, by Potek and Shcheglakovs for the reduction of fracture strength of steel in molten metal, and by Benedicks and Harden for the reduction of strength of a variety of materials in a number of liquids. A similar explanation might be used for the results of Forestier and Clauss. The fracture stress of fine wires pulled in a variety of gases, including air, is lower than in vacuum. They attributed their results to the "tendency" for the gases to condense on the metal surface. That the strength of metals is affected by the type of gas in which the test is conducted has been demonstrated convincingly; the mechanism of the effect, however, is still uncertain. This investigation represents one in a series to explore the influence of variations in alloy composition and test conditions on the atmosphere effect in the expectation that the results would afford an insight into the processes taking place. THE development of the extensive Southeast Missouri deposits greatly preceded that of the Iowa and Wisconsin deposits. It began about 1720 at Mine La Motte and other localities, and has continued uninterruptedly to the present time. It is estimated that this district produced about 184,000 tons of lead in the year 1916, having a value of approximately, $25,000,000. This is a new high record. The Southwest Missouri orebodies were hardly known before 1845 and were not extensively developed until 1870: Lead production in South-west Missouri for 1916 was 38,788 tons. Oklahoma produced 14,399 ,tons and Kansas 2,345 tons, making a total for Southwest Missouri, and the adjoining districts in Oklahoma and Kansas, of 55,532 tons of lead. The first metallurgists in Missouri were the Indian and the hunter. The early settler learned to procure his bullets either by melting ore in his camp fire or by throwing pieces of galena on an old stump and depending on the usual roasting and reaction method to obtain the metal. A little more refined method was to arrange two flat stones in the form of a V. Wood and galena were placed in the furnace and ignited. As heat developed, some of the metal was extracted and molded into bullets. The next step in utilizing the lead ores was the log hearth. All lead in Missouri was smelted in this crude affair before 1820. It was built on sloping ground, and consisted of a hearth of stone, surrounded on the front and two sides by a stone wall. The wall was 7 ft. high in front. The top and rear end were left open and in front an arch or opening was made, forming the eye of the furnace. In front of this a pit was dug in the ground, to receive the molten metal. Large logs were rolled in at the back and made to rest upon ledges formed inside, to raise them from the hearth and to give a draft. These logs filled the entire width of the furnace. Small split logs were then set up around the two sides and the front, and the ore was piled on until the furnace was full. Finally, the mass was covered with logs and fuel until the ore was completely surrounded. A gentle heat was started, which was raised very gradually. After 12 hr. the heat was increased and continued for 12 hr. more, 24 hr. being required, for each smelting. The furnace treated about 5,000 lb. per 24 hr. and the ore yielded about 50 per cent. of its metallic lead. A considerable quantity of the ore was not desulphurized, and fell between

The cost of drilling in the past few years of proration and ever decreasing allowables has received increasing thought and study. It seems to parallel the strides made with respect to pumping problems in 1932 and 1933. Low profit margins stimulate the search for economies. Any discussion of slim-hole drilling involves a multitude of abstract values, and the problem can be attacked only by a study of records and rational thinking. In a measure, traditional methods must be studied with a questioning attitude. The words "slim hole" may be somewhat misleading, as the term is entirely relative. For that reason I wish to define it as used in this discussion. On the Gulf Coast, I would define a normal hole as one in which 10 3/4-in. surface casing has been set and below which a 9 7/8-in. hole is dug. With this as a datum, holes of larger diameter below surface would be called "large holes," with 121/4 in. as the "extra large" class and holes of smaller diameter classed in the slim-hole range, 6 1/4 in. representing about the minimum size. The optimum size has not been definitely determined, but the preference is for a program that would call for setting 8 5/8 -in. surface casing and digging a 7 3/4 - in. hole. Different sections of the country might very properly deviate from this practice because of differences in depth, formations, regulations, or other factors. This paper will be confined to a discussion of the drilling of exploratory wells, as the drilling of this class of wells is quite a different problem from that of drilling a proven field, although many of the same considerations apply in both cases, as will be apparent. Although for many years shallow slim-hole and core-test holes of small diameter had been dug, it was not, I believe, until the fall of 1937 that serious consideration was given to its application in drilling wells 7000 ft., 8000 ft. and 9000 ft. deep on the Gulf Coast. This does not mean that nearly all such wells drilled on the Gulf Coast now are of the slim-hole variety, but only that efforts have been aimed in that direction with very encouraging results and there has been a very definite trend to reduce the size of holes, a trend that probably will continue. As to exploration policy, there appear to be two distinct and opposite views. The one usually followed in the past was more or less designed to "shoot the works" on one well. Generally on the Gulf Coast, the depth at which production might be obtained is limited by the drilling equipment and economics. With this thought in mind, wildcat wells are often planned with the idea of carrying the depth to 10,000 It., or even 15,000 ft. All of the possible hazards are anticipated and the general drilling and casing programs are so predicated. Such wells contemplate the drilling of large-diameter holes; the setting of at least one protective string of casing and an extensive coring policy, all of which finally adds up to an expensive well. The conzpaction of metal powders is analyzed through density-pressure curves as a three-stage process — die filling, individual particle motion, gross compact deformatim. The densification occurring during each of these stages is evaluated quantitatively. The amount of densification in the first and second stages is primarily a function of particle geometry. The densification taking place in the third stage is dependent mainly upon the material. AT the present time the densification of powders during compaction is usually described by terms such as "compactibility," "compressibility," and "compression ratio." Schwarzkopfl has proposedthat compactibility be defined as the minimum pressure needed to produce a given green strength, while compressibility be used to indicate the extent towhichthe density of a powder is increased by a given pressure. Compression ratio is generally defined as the ratio of the compact density obtained at a given pressure to the apparent density of the loose powder. 13alshina found that the pressure imposed on a compact affects the relative volume of the compact according to the following relation: hP= - LV + C [ll where: P is the applied pressure, V is the relative volume of the compact, Ratio of the specific volume of the compact to that of the material without porosity. The paper reports the development of a large, slow speed ball mill closed circuited with a hvdro-scillator. This increased grinding efficiency 28 pct over conventional units. AS the title indicates, this is a progress report for the first year of experimental operation of a relatively large diameter, slow speed ball mill with 1-in. balls, with and without various classifiers, and including a hydroscillator. Several years ago the authors came to the conclusion that if any further progress were to be made in our flotation process, an understanding of the chemical and physical reactions and the control thereof, in the grinding circuit, was essential. It may be stated, at this point, that the preparation of a correct feed for the flotation process is still the number one objective of our grinding studies. This progress report deals with grinding "per se," and not with the chemical and physical reactions as the result of grinding. Prior to this time we had taken the naive position, that since grinding had been practiced by the industry for some fifty years or more, it had been well exploited and developed by a host of investigators. Consequently, we had given the matter only superficial attention. At the start of our study, we were aware of the fact that some difference in opinion existed, but we were not prepared for the controversial evidence that developed nor for the extent to which the experts differed in their viewpoints. There seemed nothing else to do but to tour the continent and decide for ourselves what was right and what was wrong, read all the published literature and visit with anyone who had ideas about the matter. This we did over the next few ensuing years. Since our study has met with some measure of success, we report, herewith, these data that ultimately they may be of help to other investigators. In 1944 it became necessary to increase our grinding capacity and at the same time to grind the sulphide portion a little finer. This provided the impetus to put our ideas into effect. As has been previously described, our grinding flowsheet at that time consisted of a 6x12 rod mill, followed by two 5x10 ft, and one 6x12 ft trunnion overflow ball mills, with conventional rake classifiers. Naturally, we first considered all the possibilities of altering or adding to the existing equipment. It became evident that if any appreciable increase in grinding efficiency could be obtained, it would pay to scrap the existing small mills and classifiers and install one big mill with adequate classification. I HAVE previously shown you in the Fifth Book the process of making guns and gun carriages, together with other preparations and methods of moving them. If I now failed to show you more about them, it would be as if I had pointed out only the useless shadow of a thing, for I did not show the kinds and arrangement of their supplies or how the effects for which they are made are achieved. For these reasons I now wish to tell you, in addition to what I have already said, how saltpeter is made and the methods of refining it well; what it is and how without it guns and many effects of violent and artificial fires would have been discovered in vain. After this, I also wish to tell you the methods of compounding the powders for large and small guns, and finally how these are loaded and discharged. I also wish to tell you how mines are made, and fire tubes, [149v] fire pots, squibs, fireballs, rockets, shells, grapeshot, and other similar devices for shooting fire in order to bum ships, supplies, bridges, and ramparts, or, in offense, for firing on batteries. I also wish to teach you to make certain bronze balls for shooting, which carry fire and break in many pieces when they hit. For surely, besides being terrifying to the sight, they would be harmful to armies lined up in battle when they are fighting. Likewise, I wish, to enlighten you as to how artificial fires are made that last long and are difficult to extinguish. Since these are fine and useful things in wars, every captain and soldier should give them consideration and know how to use them when necessary. You will be pleased to have this information if for no other reason than that you can teach it to those who take delight in celebrating holidays with festivities and with fires.

Discussion of the paper of F. E. Lucas, presented at the Cleveland meeting, October, 1912, and printed in Bulletin No. 71, November, 1912, pp. 1315 to 1326. F. Louis GRAMMER, Leesburg, Va. (communication to the Secretary *):--Mr. Lucas's paper reminds us of our extravagance in coking, and our tardiness in the adoption of by-product ovens, as compared to Germany. We are, however, so rich in coal-having mined, so far, less than 1 per cent. of our known national resources-that the argument of conservation is not very pressing. It is true that our so-called coking-coal beds are not inexhaustible; but by-product ovens coke coal that bee-hive ovens cannot handle, and so really enlarge our reserves of coking coal. " Conservation of Resources " is a phrase in great vogue. It is overworked and abused at times; being used by those who desire to be the exclusive custodians of resources or the sole purveyors of commodities. It does not carry great weight as regards coal. There are, however, aside from the attractive considerations of profit set forth by Mr. Lucas, several other important reasons why by-product ovens should be introduced more widely. One is that coal-tar pitch is the keynote to the extension of the coal-briquette industry. The more coal-tar pitch is available, the more briquetting will be carried on; and this will utilize much coal which is either waste or a drug in the market. Heretofore, in several instances coking and steel-making plants have been built, primarily, to market bituminous slack.

THIS title introduces the subject I wish to describe to my fellow members, very few of whom, I hope, have ever had as much trouble with the smelting of ore containing much zinc, either in the lead blast furnace or the matting furnace, its circumstances have forced upon me: First, for several years in Leadville, Colo., after the sulphide ores containing zinc had been developed with greater depth and were sold to the interests with which I was connected for smelting in the blast furnace for the recovery of the lead, silver, and gold; then, in New Mexico and Arizona, where the principal source of ore supply for our custom smelter was from miners who sent most of their product in the form of concentrates, which we briquetted and smelted in the blast. furnace, producing a matte containing copper, silver, and gold, for which we were paid; together with some zinc and lead, which was penalized if in excess of a maximum base set by the refinery to which we sold our copper matte; last, but not least, my experience in Shasta county, Cal., where for the sake of recovering $13 per ton value in copper, silver, and gold, I have smelted ore containing as high as 40 per cent. zinc (the last. 18,951 tons smelted averaged 15 3/10, per cent. zinc) which we not only lost, but which it cost us money to lose.

composition, he cannot reasonably asl; the manufacturer to guarantee that this composition shall give certain physical results. W. R. Jones, Pittsburgh, Pa. : The question that naturally occlun to me is this: Has Dr. Dudley in his inveatigtrtions been aiming to prove a theory, or has he been guided by an earnest desire to discover what are the proper elements in the composition of a good-wearing steel rail ? Unfortunately, for correct chemical information, he has omitted in his analgw two very importnat elements,—sulpbur and copper. Now, before we will even begin to admit the correctnets of Dr. Dudley's conclusions and the formula he prescribes, we will at the start question the propriety of any chenlist or scientist prescribing a formula for making steel when he has iguared such important ele ments as sulphur aud copper. I, for one, will not accept any such formula. Are we sure, or is Dr. Daclley sure, that the chemical analyseq embodied in his paper are correct? This may seem a presumptuous queetion, yet, with my experience with chenlists, I naturally doubt the correctness of the analyse8, and, before I will accept them as correct, I will ask that comparative tests of phosphorous and man ganese be made by the Pennsylvania Railroad chemists and the chemists of the leading steel-works in the country. Let us first verify the correctness of the analyses before we consider the con clusions. I can enumerate a great number of instances in which chemists have differed very widely in their determinations of phos phorus and manganese. A prominent iron fitam made a contract with the Edgar Thomson Steel Company to deliver pig metal guar anteed to be between 0.07 and 0.08 phosphorus; an analysis by our chemist resulted in phosphorus 0.148 and 0.152,—a rather startling difference! Again, a sample bar of steel, in which our chemist reported phosphorus 0.11, was tested by a chemist of au other Bessemer works, ana his determinations were phosphorus between 0.07 and 0.08: A leading engineering establishmeut of Pittsbdrgh bought iron claimed by a chemical analysis to contain 0.08 phosphorus; our Mr. Ford found phosphorus 0.145. A chem ist connected with an open-hearth works reported manganese in a piece of steel, 1.14; in a second determination from the same piece of steel, by the same chemist, manganese was reported 0.43. Alcohol floods of consolidated sandstone cores have shown the process to be strongly dependent on the phase behavior of the particular alcobol-oil-water system used. This means that in many cases the mechanism does not conform to the idea of a piston-like displacement. Instead, it is found that by changing the alcohol it is possible to change the relative velocities of the oil and water and, in fact, the entire mechanism of the process. The effects of rate, viscosity, initial saturation, distance travelled and hysteresis of relative permeability on the alcohol flooding mechanism are discussed. INTRODUCTION Reasons for interest in the use of alcohol to miscibly displace oil and water from a porous medium appear in the existing literature.l-7 The mechanism of the displacement has been considered and the apparent implications formulated into a theory which presumably would enable one to predict the essential features of the process.6 Unfortunately, most of the reported experiments have been performed with unconsolidated or artificially consolidated sands. With these systems some of the noteworthy facets of the process are obscured and resulting data appear uncertain. It is the purpose of this paper to show how the use of consolidated sandstones has led to revision of the mechanism and, hence, the theory of alcohol flooding. The practical result is increased pessimism toward the possibilities of commercial application of the simplest form of the alcohol-slug process. However, elucidation of the mechanism has made it possible to define the essential characteristics of a system of slugs which will behave in a nearly piston-like fashion and, thus, yield the best possible result. EQUILIBRIUM PHASE BEHAVIOR Fig. 1 is a diagram of the ternary system isopropyl alcohol (IPA)-Soltrol-calcium chloride brine. Brine was used to prevent plugging of the core and calcium chloride was used because sodium-chloride brine exhibits a solid phase with Soltrol and IPA. If alcohol is added in increments to the immiscible mixture of water and oil represented by Point A, the path followed by the successively equilibrated samples will be on the Line ABC and pass from the immiscible region to the miscible region by crossing the binodal curve at B. Consider the intersection D of this path with the tie Line EF. The quantity of oleic phase is proportional to the Segment ED and the quantity of the aqueous phase is proportional to DF. Compositions of the two phases are specified by Points E and F. It is clear that in the case shown the oleic phase is diminishing and entirely disappears when miscibility is achieved. Such will

A novel, highly sensitive, and reproducible nzetlzod for the determination of hydrogen in solid materials is presented. The procedure requires equilibration of the specimen with hydrogen gas, rapid quenching, and hot vacuum extraction of the dissolved gas with subse-quent quantitative analysis by mass spectroscopy. Good linearity is obtained for the Arrl~enius plots of the investigated metals. The advantages in the use of this method over that of Sieverts aye discussed. The solubility data for copper are in reasonable agveewzent with a considerable number of other inuestigations, wllile those fov silver are considerably lower than previously reported. The first known solubility data for gold are presented. Solubility equations and heats of MUCH of the data which are available on the solubility of hydrogen in various metals and alloys have been obtained by the classical Sieverts method.' The method involves the measurement of a decrease in pressure of a gas in a calibrated system, and the calculated contraction in volume is attributed to the solubility of the gas in the metal sample. The procedure requires several corrections, such as the solubility of the gas in the container walls and the diffusion of the gas through these walls, as noted by Steacie and .Johnson2 and others. In addition, errors may be incurred due to reactions between metal surface impurities, such as oxides, and the saturating gas. The precise calibration of the measuring system where large thermal gradients exist can present additional difficulties. Also, accurate volumetric measurements of small quantities of gas are difficult. Many of the objections to the Sieverts method were overcome on solid materials by Ransley and ~eufeld,~ who first saturated the metal with hydrogen and performed a subsequent extraction and measurement of the gas by chemical means. Eichenauer and pebler4 and Eichenauer, Kiinzig, and pebler5 measured the diffusion coefficient and solubility by following the degasification of a sample as a function of a rate of increase in pressure in a previously evacuated system. Here again, however, the procedure involves many of the corrections of the Sie-verts method. The present investigation deals with the solubility of hydrogen in solid copper, silver, and gold by a technique which eliminates many of the aforementioned corrections and possible errors. This procedure requires equilibration of the specimen with gas, rapid quenching, and hot vacuum extraction of the dissolved gas with subsequent quantitative analysis by mass spectroscopy. EXPERIMENTAL Two completely separate systems were employed to accomplish first, the equilibrium saturation of the sample and second, the extraction of the dissolved gas. Saturation Apparatus. The saturation apparatus, illustrated in Fig. l, consisted of a vertically mounted quartz tube with a three-way valve for vacuum or hydrogen near the top and an outlet near the bottom leading to a butyl phthalate seal. The bottom end of the tube was terminated with a joint accommodating an O-ring sealed "Asco Stirring Gland" (The Emil Greiner Co.). This gland facilitated movement of the thermocouple without introduction of air into the system. The upper portion of the tube (above the furnace) was water-jacketed.
