Dendritic aggregate of ice formed on freezing of aqueous soluitions has been studied. Chlorides of sodium, potassiutn, lithiunz , and hydroget1 were used as solutes. The spacing between ice platelets or den-drites was experimenlally found proportzonal to the square root of freezing time when the freezing rate was constant from beginrting to end of solidification; the constant freezing rates were obtained during freezing of small droplets of aqueous soliitions surrounded by relatively large heat sinks. The transverse growth velocity of the ice platelets is proportional to the square root of the freezing rate. During unidirectional freezing from a constant temperuture chill, the solution at each location is subjected to a spectrum of freezirtg rates. The freezing rate is ini- FREEZING of solutions has been a subject of investigation in many disciplines. Aqueous solutions offer the advantage of transparenty; their study is of special significance due to the increasing interest in freezing processes for desalination. In addition dendritic solidification of aqueous solutions is in many ways analogous to freezing of metallic solutions. Aqueous solutions of most ionic salts freeze with tially low, passes through a maximum, and then decreases until solidificatimz is complete. The den-drite spacing increases linearly with the distance from the chill surface; it is inversely profiortional to the square root of the maximum freezing rate. The dendrite spacings in the two systems (the constanl freezing rate and the varying freezing rate) are equal, when the maximum freezing rate of the varying freezing rate system equals the average freezing vale of the constant freezing rate system. Mass transport in interdendritic liquid duriug solidificatiotz is analyzed; the experimental observations indicate that maximum concentration difference (AC) and supercooling (AT) in the interdendritic liquid are indepexdent of freezing rate. the separation of practically pure ice crystals from the liquid phase; with very few exceptions there is no solid solubility of ionic salts in ice. As an ice crystal grows there is rejection of solute from the moving interface into the liquid. Since the rejected solute moves primarily by diffusion, concentration gradients are established in the liquid. The highest solute concentrations are found in liquid immediately adjacent to liquid-solid interfaces and lowest concentrations farthest from the interface. Two-phase equilibrium obtains only at the solid-liquid interface; at other locations the liquid becomes supercooled because temperature gradients are negligible compared to concentration gradients. This is an immediate consequence of the fact that thermal diffusivities are considerably higher than mass diffusivities.

Large-scale testing of the explosibility of coal dust as conducted by the Bureau of Mines in its Experimental Mine involves a large initial investment, and a high charge for maintenance and conduct of the test; in addition the work is necessarily slow because of the time required for the preparntion of the tests and the cleaning and repairing of the mine after each test. These tests have been made along practical mining lines that admit of a range of mixtures of dust varying from 5 to 10 per cent. and with gas as low as 0.5 per cent. increments. Because of the time and expense involved, efforts have been made to devise a type of gallery for laboratory use in which the results obtained in the Experimental Mine may be correlated as an aid in a study of dusts, the explosibility of which might be approximately determined quickly and at a minimum of expense. The explosibility of coal dust has been studied by a number of European investors, using small laboratory devices; among these may be mentioned the experiments conducted by Galloway, Vital, Hall and Clark, Abel, Mallard and Chatelier, Thorpe, Bedson and Widdas, Engler, Holwartz and Meyer, and Taffanel, results of whose experiments have becn reviewed by the Bureau of Mines.' The Bureau has conducted many tests with the Frazer-Cle1ncnt5 apparattus, which gives the pressures set up when the dust cloud within is ignited with a platinum coil or tube, heated to different temperatures, but for these tests the sample must be especially prepared as to size (200 mesh) and must be dry. Need for a Dust-testing Apparatus An attempt has been made to design an apparatus that may be used for checking and correlating the expcrimental tests. The first design was a wooden gallery, 8 by 10 in., inside cross section, and 12 ft. long, and having a number of strips along each side for creation of turbulence. The wooden gallery did not get beyond its period of calibration; it mas difficult to make the gallery sufficiently tight, for it was necessary that the top be removable in order that the gallery could be cleaned. In the use of the wooden gallery, however, sufficient operating data were obtained to be a guide in the design of a steel gallery having a circular cross-section. One of the features was a flap valve, at the closed end of the gallery, that would open inwardly thus preventing a reduced pressure within, caused by the cooling of the gases of combustion, and the explosions propagated much better than when the valve was not used; another feature was the determining of the best method for getting a cloud of dust simultaneously in all parts of the gallery, which was accomplished by the use of the concussion wave of a small quantity of powder or by the use of compressed air.

THE need for new or improved refractory materials has caused metal phosphides to be given renewed scrutiny. Some metal phosphides show high-temperature inertness, are exceptionally hard, and exhibit a marked resistance to chemical attack. Various metal phosphides have been prepared for study by direct combination of the elements,'-' by reaction of metal or metal compounds with phosphine or phosphorus trichloride,'"' by thermal decomposition of a metallic phosphate or phosphite,"-'8 and by molten salt electrolysis.19 Electrolytic preparation of phosphides of titanium, manganese, and chromium from their oxides is reported in this paper. An externally heated 3-in.-ID by 6-in.-deep graphite cell, that served as the anode as well as a container for the electrolyte, was used in these investigations, and a suspended, centrally positioned graphite rod served as the cathode. A closely fitting silicon carbide furnace liner minimized atmospheric oxidation of the crucible. Electrolyses were performed for predetermined periods and current settings. Preliminary research had indicated the more efficient current and potential settings that could be used. Upon completion of the deposition period, the deposit was hot-stripped from the cathode. The mass of crystalline deposit, plus occluded and adhering salt, was crushed to minus 10 mesh and hot-leached in dilute hydrochloric acid. The leached crystalline material was water-washed, dried, and sampled for analysis. Products were identified by X-ray diffraction and standard analytical procedures. Electrochemical studies were initiated to establish the optimum conditions necessary to produce manganese phosphide (MnP), titanium phosphide (Tip), and chromium phosphide (CrP). Among the factors studied were the operating temperature, the imposed current, and the electrolyte system. If the temperature, or imposed current, was too high, deposition of phosphorus resulted, and if either were too low, partially reduced lower oxides were deposited. The operating conditions established for repetitive high-quality production of metal phosphides of the MP structure are presented in Table I. The metal phosphide crystals varied in size, but all had a definite metallic appearance. Typical are the crystals of CrP shown in Fig. 1. Evaluation data and analysis of the crystals are presented in Table 11. Efforts to measure resistivity of these three compounds over the temperature ranges of 250o to 400°K were hampered by the small physical size of the crys-

BLUE HEAT PHENOMENA IN constructing a theory of the flow and hardening of metals, we necessarily make use of such phenomena as seem to be, universally observed in metals. It is, therefore, a matter of. concern to the constructors of such mnemonic systems if one or two of the group classified as metals show anomalous behavior. Such egregious phenomena are observed in pure or nearly-pure iron in the reaction of its mechanical properties to low-temperature annealing after cold work and to increased temperature of testing. In short it has been generally observed that iron," as an outstanding exception among metals, increases its hardness and strength by low-temperature annealing. after cold work,1 and also by increase of testing temperature to the range of 150° to 300° C. The investigation here recorded was made then with the object of ascertaining if similar phenomena were observed in high purity iron and, if not, to the presence of which impurities these phenomena could be traced.

STUDIES upon the sintering of metal powders, in the solid state, have led to the proposal that the surface energy of the powder particles provides the driving force that causes points of contact between pairs of particles to grow into broad welds which isolate the residual vacant space into pores that tend to spheroidize and gradually to diminish in total volume.' Investigators differ with regard to the mechanism of the movement of the metal, under the influence of surface energy, to accomplish these changes. One school asserts that there is a mass movement of the metal, referred to as a "viscous flow," while the other school prefers to view the movement as a self diffusion process, wherein individual atoms are, transferred without disturbance of the basic pattern of the crystal lattice. Extensive experimental studies upon the sintering of copper, conducted recently by A. J. Shaler,2 have been in- terpreted by their author as support for the viscous flow mechanism of transport, the theory of which was developed originally by J. Frenkel.3 Duplicating a portion of this work with minor changes, G. C. Kuczynski4 is led to the alternate view, namely, that the initial stages of sintering, at least, proceed as a self-diffusion process. Both of these investigations were designed to deal with an isolated unit of sintering, i.e., with the shrinkage of a single pore, or with the growth of a single point weld. It remains to ascertain the behavior of a typical metal powder compact composed of a large number of particles of varying size and sintering to a body with a multiplicity of pores. The observation of density changes alone during sintering is not sufficient in such a case; it is essential to know how the internal geometry of the compact changes. This has been the object of the present investigation, the results of which are used to support the self-diffusion mechanism of sintering. The present studies consist in the measurement of the number of pores as a function of size and time at temperature during the sintering of a copper compact made from a commercial copper powder lightly pressed and sintered in several different atmospheres. A brief survey was made also of the change in shape of the pores, under the influence of the same variables. All of this was done by direct observation with the microscope. Fluid flow through an igneous rock formation will occur mainly through fractures. A non-diffusing or slowly diffusing tracer (such as .5µ silica spheres identifiable under electron microscope) will arrive at a monitor well when enough fluid has been injected to displace the volume of water in the flow fractures between the injection and monitor wells. A rapidly diffusing tracer (such as NaC1)-will diffuse into the matrix blocks and so a volume of tracer nearly equal to the total fluid volume contained in the rock formation between injection and monitor wells must be injected before significant diffusing tracer arrival will be noted. The flow fracture porosity is typically one hundred times smaller than the total porosity of an igneous formation. The shift between diffusing and non diffusing tracer arrivals, together with the diffusional characteristics of the tracers, can define the diffusional accessibility of the matrix blocks of an igneous formation. A field test of these concepts and the problems encountered will be described.

IN the representation of crystals by figures it is customary to draw their edges as if they were projected upon some definite plane. Two sorts of projection are use8; the ah- graphic in which the lines of projection fell at right angles and the chirographic where they fall at oblique angles upon the plane of projection. The second of these projections is the more important, and must be tr2atcd here in some detail. Two points are to be noted in regard to it. In the first place, in the drawings of crystals the point of view is supposed to be at an infinite distance, and it follows from this that all lines which are parallel on the crystal appear parallel in the drawing. In the second place, in all ordinary cases, it is the complete ideal crystal which is represented, that is, the crystal with its full geometrical symmetry as explained on pp. 10 to 13 (cf. note on p. 13). In general, drawings of crystals are made, either by constructing the figure upon a projection of its crystal axes, using the intercepts of the different faces upon the axes in order to determine the directions of the edges or by constructing the figure from the gnomonic (or stereographic) projection of the crystal forms. Both of these methods have their advantages and disadvantages. By drawing the crystal figure by the aid of a projection of its crystal axes the symmetry of the crystal and the relations of its faces to the axes are emphasized. In many cases, however, drawing from a projection of the poles of the crystal faces is simpler and takes less time. The student should be able to use both methods and consequently both are described below.

Mud-analysis logging provides identification of the fluid content of formations drilled by the rotary method and permits the accurate correlation of oil and gas shows with the depth. Mud-analysis logging eliminates much coring and has an especially important application in drilling programs when coring is particularly hazardous or the electric log is difficult to interpret correctly. An appreciation of the factors that influence the results of the mud analysis, such as rate of penetration, mud properties, coring, and characteristics of reservoir rock as related to the "flushing effect," permits a better understanding of the mud-analysis log. Recent studies of the relationship of the two gas readings obtained by the gas-detector instrument have proved significant. The difference between the total combustible gas reading and the higher molecular weight gas reading indicates the presence of methane. With few exceptions, zones not showing an increase of methane probably can be condemned. Mud-analysis logging furnishes valuable information, which generally cannot be obtained by other methods. Introduction Logging by mud analysis of wells drilled with rotary tools is a direct method of locating oil-and-gas-bearing formations. The use of this method of logging has increased each year until now more than 20 field units are being used in 13 oil-producing states and in some foreign countries. Several papers1-9 have been published in the petroleum trade journals describing in detail the equipment and the application of mud-analysis logging. This paper will discuss briefly the method and review its application and some of the late developments. Method As the drilling of a well progresses, the drilling bit dislodges and disintegrates a cylindrical section of the formation. If oil or gas is contained in the pore spaces of the cylinder, some of the contents of these porous spaces will be entrained in the drilling fluid. In wall logging by mud analysis, the mud is continuously examined for oil and gas on its return to the surface, and the results are correlated back to the actual depth of the hole at the time the mud was clearing the eyes of the bit. The test for gas is made by diverting a portion of the circulating mud from the flow line to a separator or gas trap, where the mud is thoroughly mixed with air and a portion of the gas entrained in the mud is removed. A stream of air is drawn coun-tercurrent to the flow of mud in the gas trap, thus materially assisting the separation of the gas from the mud. The air-gas mixture is then drawn into a "hot-wire" gas-detector instrument where the percentage of the combustible gas is determined. The presence of oil in the formation drilled is detected by a physical examination of the drilling mud under ultraviolet light. A sample of the mud is treated to reduce the surface tension and gel strength, after which it is placed in a viewing box. This box is so constructed that all external light is excluded and so that the sample may be subjected selectively to either ultra-

A froth flotation unit was added to the DeBardeleben Coal Corporation's Empire washer at Empire, Alabama, in the fall Of I94O following an investigation of possible ways and means of recovering coal values from settling-tank overflow or slurry. Officials of the DeBardeleben corporation hoped that some practical and reasonably economical way could be found for recovering fine coal from overflow water, although there had as yet been very little progress along this line in the Alabama coal fields. The Bureau of Mines was asked to cooperate in the project through its Southern Experiment Station, at University, Alabama. This paper presents a brief description of the process and the installation that resulted from the investigation of the overflow water or slurry problem at the Empire mine. The experimental data include' as a Part of this Paper were obtained during the course of the investigation in 1940 Since that time, however, the flotation unit has been running more or less continuously without significant operational changes and is still Performing pretty much in accordance with the data obtained in 1940. Flowsheet at Empire and Type of Coal Treated The Empire mine is developed on the Black Creek bed near the the border of the Warrior field. The coal in this bed is extremely low-ash and although there is an almost complete absence of bone coal and partings, the bed is so thin that, with mechanized mining, a high percentage of rock from roof and floor inevitably gets into the run-of-mine coal. The thickness of the Black Creek bed throughout the part of the Warrior field in which it is mined extensively is rarely over 30 in. and probably would average about 25 in, the coal is of the high-volatile A rank and of excellent quality, but as a result of admixture of roof and floor material, the run-of-mine product usually contains I ; to 20 pct rock by weight. he following is a proximate analysis on an "as-received " basis of a typical seam sample from the Empire mine:' moisture, 3.0 pet; volatile, 34.6 fixed carbon 58.3; ash, 4.1 This sample shelved 15,070 Btu per pound and 0.9 pct sulphur on a moisture-and-ash-free basis. The modern anthracite breaker or washery uses almost exclusively a wet method of preparation, which requires, roughly, 1 gal. of water per minute per ton of production per day. The entire anthracite industry uses about 320,000 gal. per min. of water for this purpose or 800,000 tons of water per day. As this water leaves the breakers, it contains fine solids—coal, slate, pyrite, and clay—and is then called silt or slush; as slush is the term most commonly used, it will be employed throughout this paper. The solid content of the slush will be referred to as solids. In the earlier days of anthracite mining, little coal was washed, less crushing was employed, and virgin coal was mined exclusively. As a result, the slush problem was not acute because of the relatively small quantity and the coarseness of the solids. Such slush as was produced could usually be easily impounded and retained or could be discharged into streams without any appreciable pollution being apparent. The character of the fine waste from the breakers changed materially as its quantity increased until now about 40,000 tons of slush solids are produced daily. Second mining and robbing operations materially increased the quantity of fine solids delivered to the breaker in the mine car. The demand for chestnut, stove and egg sizes, to the exclusion of grate, steamboat, and lump sizes, requires finer crushing of the mine-run coal with a consequent increase of fine solids in slush. The use of rice and barley sizes removed a considerable tonnage of coarser solids from the slush but left great quantities of fine solids difficult to retain completely, and to store, and long considered of no possible fuel value. Despite the efforts of the coal operators, the slush solids have found their way into the streams causing, in some cases, serious pollution. The Water Supply Commission of Pennsylvania published, in 1916, a report on Culm in the Streams of the Anthracite Region,' from which the following is taken: About 40,000,000,000 gal. of water carrying 10,000,000 tons of fine culm are discharged into the water-courses direct, flushed into the mines, or disposed of by various means on the surface. The extent to which the very small sizes of anthracite have been deposited in the rivers draining the coal fields is made evident by the fact that over a quarter of a million tons are recovered annually from the river beds by coal-washing operations.

The 37th meeting of the Boston Section was held at the Engineers' Club, on Monday evening, Oct. 2, 1916. Fourteen members and guests attended the dinner. The Society was fortunate in having present not only the announced speaker, J. G. Carleton of Marblehead, Mass., but also a brother member from afar, Thomas Warner of California. Mr. Carleton, who has spent the' past few years in South America, gave an informal talk on the mining of the precious metals on the South American continent. He drew a comparison of the geographical distribution of the precious metals in North and South America and pointed, out the similarity in the geological occurrence of the eastern mining, regions, mentioning particularly Venezuela and Brazil. He also directed attention to the fact that the great placers of the northwestern part of North America had their counterpart in the gold-bearing region of Columbia. The marked contrast between the southern end of North America, so rich in metals, and the southern part of South America, so poor in mineral deposits, was clearly brought out. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that the South American Cordillera is less intensely mineralized, than the corresponding mountain.

IRON ore reserves of Lone Star Steel Co. cover 56,000 acres in the north basin of the East Texas geosynclinal area near Daingerfield. Ore is almost wholly restricted to the Weches formation of middle Eocene Age. Its resistance to erosion has created the hilly topography of the East Texas area. The ore deposits, in the upper portion of the hills, are usually overlain with residual sand and clay overburden less than 15 ft thick. The ore formation consists of inter- bedded shallow ocean sediments ranging from pure greensand to fine-grained sands and clays containing a maximum of 70 pct limonite, or siderite, and varying from 2 to 100 ft thick. The iron in this ore originated as iron silicate or greensand in the ocean sediments, and the ore mineral siderite was formed when meteoric waters redeposited the iron under reducing conditions as a carbonate. With weathering and progressive erosion much of this siderite was later oxidized and altered to limonite - yellow to dark brown hydrous iron oxides formed into nodules up to 18 in., embedded in a sandy clay and weathered greensand matrix. Beneath the water table the siderite zone consists of interbedded shale and greensands with thin ledges and nodules of siderite. Lone Star Steel Co. has proven a 75-year supply of ore, and exploration of reserves and acquisition of new property is not complete.

INTRODUCTION Most of the copper concentrates treated by the flash smelting furnace at Kosaka smelter come from "black ore" that is produced in the local mines nearby. The copper concentrates contain various impurities such as lead and zinc as shown below. [ ] These impurities are mainly concentrated into the flue dusts in the copper smelting system. The dust production rates of flash smelting furnace and converter at Kosaka smelter are, therefore, fairly high compared with other copper smelters. However, by recovering these valuable metals in the dusts systematically, profit-increase of the by-products must be expected. This also leads to the solution of environmental pollution problems and enables us to establish the technical completion of complex sulfide ore treatment by flash smelting process. The iron-ore deposits of Iron county, Utah, which rival those of Lake Superior in extent, are situated 275 miles south of Salt Lake City, and 25 miles south of Lund, a station on the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad. The range of hills containing the deposits has a general NE-SW. strike, and rise from a few hundred to 2,000 ft. above the Escalante desert, the ore being included in an area of 5 by 20 miles. The basal rock of these hills is diorite-porphyry. The flanks of the range are covered with limestone supposed to be of Carboniferous age, underlain in some localities by quartzite. Both formations are conformable to the porphyry, and are the remnants of beds that formerly covered the highest peaks, but have been removed subsequently by erosion. In the central and southern parts of the range, beds of Cretaceous sandstone rest unconformably on the eruptives. Rhyolite-flows occur to the south and southeast of the iron-ore deposits; and dikes and sheets of post-Tertiary lava are common. With the exception of a few springs, the range is destitute of water. Sage-brush, stunted cedars and the common desert-bushes constitute the only vegetation. Large beds of coal of poor quality occur in Cretaceous sandstones 15 miles east of the ore-deposits.

UNLESS present in considerable proportion, metals of the precious-metal group-other than gold and silver-are not readily detected by the methods of fire assaying usually applied to ores and metallurgical products. Platinum, when present in small quantity, will ordinarily be reported as silver unless special methods of parting are used. Other elements occurring in the gold itself are all fluxed and slagged in the assay operation and if analyses are made on bullions the melting and slagging operations to which the bullion has been subjected may eliminate most of the associated elements. On the other hand, the analysis of precipi-tate from the cyanide treatment of gold ores may reveal the presence of many unexpected elements, such as tungsten and molybdenum. It is uncertain, however, whether many of the elements present in the pre-cipitate are derived from the ore gangue or from the gold itself. No very general survey of the distribution of metallic elements in gold seems to have been made. Rose and Newman,1 in connection with the composition of native gold, say in part as follows: Gold is occasionally found alloyed with copper and sometimes also with iron, bis-muth, lead, mercury, tin, antimony, palladium or rhodium. Rhodium gold from Mexico was found to be of the specific gravity 15.5 to 16.8 and contained 34 to 43 per cent of rhodium. The native alloy of palladium, gold, and silver from Porpez con-tains 85.98 per cent of gold, 9.85 per cent palladium and 4.17 per cent silver. Mal-donite, from Victoria, contains gold 64.5 per cent, bismuth 35.5 per cent (Louis). Dana' says that native gold is usually alloyed with silver in varying amounts, and that sometimes it also contains traces of copper and iron. Rare varieties contain palladium, rhodium and bismuth. Other authors, for instance Zeigler3 and Clark,4 give similar information. Most refer-ences on the subject agree that ordinary native golds contain, in common, the elements silver, copper and iron. After completion of the work of which this paper is a record, the conclusion is reached that all ordinary native gold probably does contain these elements and, although in certain cases other elements may be found to be present, that it is difficult to

THE occurrence of diamonds of some size in the gold-fields of California is by no means uncommon, and was noticed by me in a communication, to the California Academy of Science in 1867, when specimens of this gem, from at least five different localities, were exhibited. I then suggested that a more attentive examination of the heavy sands left in the sluices of hydraulic washings would in all probability detect diamonds, mingled with other rare species not commonly believed to have occurred in these sands. Mr. George A. Treadwell, of San Francisco, has 1at.ely sent me a small package of these sands, collected by him from the sluices of the " Spring Valley Gravel Mining Claim," Cherokee, Butte County, California. A microscopic examination shows these sands to abound in beautiful colorless zircons (hyacinths), of the form well known in the hyacinths of Expailly (France), associated with crystals of topaz, quartz in fragments, rounded grains 'of chromic and titanic iron, and

The area for which oil and gas developments in South Texas are reported for 1940 in this paper covers the same counties that were included in the reports for 1938 and 1939, with the addition of LaSalle County. LaSalle County is includcd in the Laredo district of South Texas, which totals seven counties for that district. The Corpus Christi district remains the same, with nine counties. The two districts together comprise what is known as the South Texas area for this report. Continued exploration along established trends and beyond proven field limits during 1940 provided South Texas with new fields and new producing levels at a rate of discovery fairly comparable with the high records set during recent years. The wells drilled in the counties within this district (including LaSalle) numbered 1656, approximately 8 per cent below the 1801 figure of last year. However, rank wildcats totaIed 336, an increase of 17.5 per cent compared to the 286 drilled in 1939. Therefore, since new field discoveries numbered 25 in 1940 against 29 in 1939, the rate of new field discoveries in 1940, based upon rank wildcats drilled, was I/I3.4 while that of 1939 was I/9.86, which shows a decrease of about 25 per cent in the rate of new fields. The rank wildcat tests in 1940 gave the following results: 18 produced oil, 4 produced distillate with gas, 3 produced. only gas, and 3r1 were dry holes (Table 5). Of the 1320 tests drilled in already proven fields or as extensions to pro+en areas (representing a decline of 12.8 per cent from last year's total of 1515 tests), 1048 produced oil or distillate, 60 produced gas and 212 were dry holes (Table 4). Of the producers, 50 found new sands or crude-in-distillate-sands in existing fields. Among the several fields subjected to extensive development were: Colorado, Jim Hogg County; East White Point, San Patricio and Nueces County; Rincon and Sun, Starr County; Glen, Webb and Zapata Counties; Wade City and Orange Grove, Jim Wells County; Stratton and South Clara Driscoll, Nueces County, and Aransas Pass, San Patricio and Aransas Counties. The development of important crude reserves on structures formerly considered primarily distillate fields has probably been the most important phase of the year's operations in South Texas. The Rincon, Stratton, Agua Dulce, Wade City, Odem and Robston fields provided the new crude sand discoveries. At some places crude production was opened by exploratory wells that found new sand horizons; in others by flank wells that found already discovered distillate sands sufficiently low to provide crude production. Rincon, Starr County, with its multiple sands, is now believed to be one of South Texas' largest crude-oil reserves. Offshore drilling showed important results during the year, including the discovery of two new submerged fields and the extension of the East White Point field into offshore Nueces County.
