I Should like to commence by saying how much I appreciate the honor which the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers has done me in inviting me to visit your country, and to deliver this lecture before you. In choosing a subject, and in deciding what to include and what to omit, I have endeavored to discuss as far as possible work carried out recently in Europe with which you may not be unduly familiar. It would be poor return for your hospitality, and a mistaken sort of compliment indeed, if I were to load the lecture with accounts of researches carried out in your own country—researches with which you are probably better acquainted than I. Not that I have in any way excluded work done on this side of the Atlantic from my survey; one would indeed find it difficult to write on this, or on any other branch of science, without mentioning American work. But I have endeavored as far as possible to concentrate on aspects of the case which will, I hope, be comparatively fresh to you, and I feel fairly certain that this will be in accordance with your own wishes. Films Produced at Elevated Temperatures If a strip of iron is heated strongly at one end, the other end remaining cold, there is produced over the heated portion a layer of oxide scale, the thickness of which diminishes steadily with the distance from the hot end. Somewhere in the middle of the strip, the thickness of the oxidized layer will become comparable to the wave length of light, and over this region the thin films give rise to a series of beautiful interference tints, commonly known as "temper colors." The colors are caused by the fact that two trains of light waves are reflected respectively from the outer and inner surfaces of the oxide film, and the possibility arises that the "crests" of one series of waves may coincide with the "troughs" of the other, thus diminishing the intensity of the light of some particular wave length. The state of affairs in this part of the strip is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, in which the film thickness is enormously exaggerated, of course, in comparison with the length of the strip; the

Data are resented on the physical properties of five waxes obtained from fields in Texas and Louisiana in which "parafin" troubles are being experienced. The crude parafin was fractionated into three components, voluble in cold acetone, soluble in boiling acetone, and insoluble in boiling acetone. The acetone insoluble fraction was found to consist essentially of straight chain parafin hydrocarbons in the molecular weight range 525 to 700. Solubilities of the purified high molecular weight parafins were determined in a number of solvents. It was found that in hydrocarbon solvents, including crude oil, solubilities could be calculated satisfactorily by use of ideal solubility relations. In chlorinated, and oxygenated solvents, large deviations from ideal behavior were observed. These deviations could be partially correlated with the internal pressure of the solvent. INTRODUCTION A problem encountered in many producing oil fields is that of "paraffin" deposition. The problem refers to the deposition of material from the crude oil onto tubing, pumping rods, flow lines, or other material contacted by the crude. This problem has been recognized for nearly a hundred years, and numerous investigations have been reported on its causes and prevention or alleviation. One of the more comprehensive of such investigations was published by Reistle1 in 1932. A few of the salient findings of his report are briefly as follows: The term "paraffin" as used to describe this problem refers to the deposit of carbonaceous material which is not soluble or dispersible by the crude oil under the conditions where deposition occurs. The "paraffin" normally consists of high molecular weight paraffin hydrocarbons, both straight chain and branched, resins and asphaltic materials of undetermined nature, occluded oil and water, and possibly sand. In consistency, the deposit may vary from a soft, sticky material, to one which is hard and brittle. Deposits are usually black, although lighter colors are sometimes observed. Under the conditions of temperature, pressure, and crude oil composition occurring in the underground reservoir, the paraffin is in suspension or solution in the crude. As the oil flows to the surface, there is generally a reduction of temperature, pressure, and the amount of dissolved gases contained in the oil. Reduction of temperature and gas break-out were shown by Reistle to be factors causing reduced solubility of the paraffin in the crude. Thus, as the crude containing paraffin rises to the surface and flows to storage tanks at atmospheric temperature, the solubility of the paraffin may be exceeded. Deposition will begin at the point in the system where the temperature of the system falls below its cloud point, and continue as long as there is a further drop in the solution power of the crude for the paraffin. The severity of the deposition as well as the location of the bulk of the deposition, i.e., in subsurface or surface equipment, will depend on the amount of paraffin originally in the crude, the manner in which pressure and temperature of the crude

The partial molar heats of solution at infinite dilution in tin of aluminum at 300° and 350°C and of gallium, indium, and thallium at 240°, 300°, and 350°C have been measured by tin solution calori-metry. Aluminum, gallium, and thallium are endo-thermic on solution; indium is exothermic. Any temperature dependence of the heats of solution lies within the experimental scatter. Over the dilute ranges investigated, only aluminum has a measurable change in its heat of solution with composition. HEATS of solution of one element in another reflect the interaction between them. The investigation of partial molar heats of solution in dilute alloys is of particular interest as the properties of the solvent are altered to only a limited extent by the presence of the solute and also as the interaction between solute atoms is small. When the heats of solution of a related series of elements in a solvent are known, a systematic comparison may be made. In the investigation reported here, the partial molar heats of solution of the Group III elements aluminum, gallium, indium, and thallium in dilute solution in tin were measured. This work follows an investigation of the heats of solution in tin of the Group IB elements.' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Samples of gallium, indium, and thallium were obtained from Johnson, Mathey and Co., Ltd. Indium and thallium were supplied as wire, 1.6 mm in diam; gallium was in the form of irregular pieces. The supplier reported the following minimum purities: gallium—99.95 pct; indium—99.99 pct; thallium—99.99 pct. The aluminum, obtained from Alcoa Research Laboratories, was reported to be 99.995 pct pure. The tin was supplied by Baker and Co., Inc.; the reported analysis indicated a tin content of at least 99.96 pct with lead as principal impurity. Calorimeter. this description will cover only the essential features of the calorimeter with special attention to modifications made since an earlier description was published.' A Dewar flask containing the tin bath was held in a constant-temperature bath of a near-eutectic mixture of lithium, sodium, and potassium nitrates. This bath, which was stirred vigorously, was heated by a primary resistance winding in the container wall and by a secondary winding immersed in the salt. The voltage supplied to both windings was stabilized. The temperature of the salt bath was controlled by means of a platinum resistance thermometer in one arm of a Wheatstone bridge. The light from a mirror galvanometer in the bridge circuit fell on a photocell which controlled the current in a saturable reactor in series with the secondary winding. In this manner, the temperature of the salt bath was controlled to ±0.003°C and that of the tin bath to at least ±0.002°C. Each of these temperatures was measured by two iron-constantan thermocouples in series, coiled in a helix to minimize heat loss and immersed in the salt and tin baths in protective sheaths. The temperature of the laboratory was kept constant to ± 1°C during a run. Specimens were dropped into the tin bath from an addition arm held at O°C which was part of the cal-orimetric system. The system was evacuated to about 0.02 1 to minimize oxidation and to reduce transfer of heat. The bath was stirred by a glass stirrer introduced through a double Wilson seal. The samples were scraped clean before weighing, which was carried out as rapidly as possible. Each sample was immediately placed in the evacuated addition arm to minimize contamination. These precautions were especially necessary with aluminum. After the runs with gallium and thallium at all temperatures and with indium at 240° and 350°C (Series I) were completed and before the runs with indium at 300°C and aluminum at 300° and 350°C (Series 11) were begun the following changes were made. The shape of the Dewar flask was changed so as to result in a lower surface to volume ratio of the bath and at the same time the amount of tin was reduced from 500 to 400 g. The paddle type stirrer was replaced by a helical screw and the rate of stirring was increased to about 150 to 200 rpm.

Prior to 1938, proration procedure in Kansas required the physical testing of wells in order to set up a basis for allocating production. Subsequently the use of liquid-level data and bottom-hole pressure data was authorized on certain types of wells as a basis for calculating well capacities, thereby permitting wells to be tested at low rates and with small volumes of production. This paper gives some attention to the equipment used for obtaining liquid-level data but in general it is devoted to the theoretical and physical factors involved in well testing by drawdown methods. These tests are divided into two classifications: (I) liquid-level data used directly to calculate capacities, and (2) liquid-level data and liquid-level measuring equipment used in connection with other data to determine bottom-hole pressure. Equations and calculations for both types are shown. Well capacities calculated from fill-up data have not been used generally but offer a simple means of testing some wells. Theoretical factors and calculations for such tests are shown. In the state of Kansas, proration laws required that the "ability of a well to produce" be given consideration in state allocation orders and for many years this was the only factor used in prorating the allowed oil. The "ability of a well to produce", was the quantity of oil that could be obtained from a well in a prescribed period, usually 24 hr. Early in the history of State-regulated proration, Kansas operators realized that, unless some restriction were placed upon equip- ment, the competition between producers to obtain large well "potentials" might result in a race to install the largest pumping equipment. Consequently, restrictions were placed upon the size of tubing and length of pump stroke that could be used in pumping wells during potential tests. Later, restrictions were placed also upon the size of tubing and chokes that could be used in flowing walls. Despite the restriction setup, better pumping equipment was designed and installed, pumps were improved, and various devices were invoked to obtain high rates of production for short periods of time. By 1937 pumping cycles of forty to forty-five 54-in. strokes per minute were not uncommon, and numerous wells had produced at the rate of 3500 bbl. per day for short periods. Such production was far beyond any rate that could be long sustained. Equipment necessary to take "potentials" was several times larger than that needed for normal producing purposes, and repairs and replacements required by the high pumping speeds were excessive. Also, many operators suspected that the high rates of production main tained during '"potential" tests were conducivc to early water encroachment. By 1938 large-scale physical testing of wells in Kansas ended, the use of the bottom-hole pressure gauge had become common, engineers and operators were becoming familiar with the term ''productivity index," and bottom-hole pressure was being used as a factor in allocation in many areas. THIS investigation was undertaken to determine some of the factors contributing to the embrittle-ment of glass-coated silver wire on heat treatment. The materials used in this investigation were 22 and 23 AWG silver wires obtained from Handy and Harman as "fine quality, soft temper." A wet analysis of one sample showed 99.8 pct Ag. On June 15, Dr. E. E. Southard gave the following report to the Advisory Committee on Industrial Mental Hygiene of the. Engineering Foundation. Psychiatric social work, a new specialty in social work, was the topic of several section meetings (500-600 in attendance) at the National Conference for Social Work, held at Atlantic City, June 1-6. The new specialty was stated, by Dr. R. C. Cabot, to be the greatest single advance in medical social work since its establishment. Reports from three schools (Smith, New York, Philadelphia) indicate a good production rate of personnel, probably at least one hundred a; year, chiefly to be absorbed by hospitals, unless industrial psychiatry steps into the field. No detailed public announcements concerning industrial psychiatry were made; but private discussions elicited approval only for the program. Indications are that many non-medical social workers will decide to get additional training to go into medical social work and then to specialize in psychiatric social work and that many medical social workers will desire to specialize in psychiatric social work, with a view partly to entering reconstruction work, partly to entering industrial psychiatry. Suggestion has been made that psychiatric social workers may go into some kinds of, employment management and may look for special courses to that end. Evidence. has been brought that certain "compensated" psychopathic employees have been good (even very good) workmen: emphasis should be laid on this point to show the constructive aspect of industrial psychiatry:

The Goodman Mfg. Co., Chicago, builders of underground electric mining machinery, celebrated its 50th Anniversary on April 23rd. The company has a complete line of cutting machines, loaders, conveyors, locomotives, and shuttle cars for service in both coal and metal mines. The Joy Mfg. Co. has received, under the provisions of the Economic Cooperation Administration, an initial order in excess of $1,000,000 for equipment to be used in the mechanization of iron ore mines in France. While the equipment will be used in various privately owned mines, the order was placed through the French Society for the Development of Mechanical Mining. Included in the equipment are the company's recently developed hard rock loaders and shuttle cars. American Brake Shoe Co. has consolidated all operations of its Canadian subsidiaries into one corporation, the Dominion Brake Shoe Co. Ltd., Montreal, Canada. The products of Dominion Brake Shoe include brake shoes, track equipment, manganese steel castings, automotive brake lining, air compressors, and paint spray equipment. Exhibits of more than 2000 electrical products, processes, and techniques, ranging from precise aircraft instruments to complex working models of steel mill, textile and other industry equipment, will be displayed in the "More Power To America Special" when it makes its nationwide tour this spring. C. H. Lang, Vice-President in charge of sales for General Electric's apparatus department, said that the train will visit the country's key industrial centers for inspection by utility and industrial executives and municipal leaders. The train will be hauled by an Alco¬G-E two-unit, 4000-hp., Diesel-electric locomotive which in itself will be part of the unusual series of displays. Sizing of Excavators and Hauling Equipment. The Power Crane and Shovel Association has released a 24-page bulletin dealing with the proper sizing of excavators and hauling equipment, Technical Bulletin No. 3. Rubber Conveyor Belting. "Installation, Care and Maintenance of Rubber Conveyor Belting" is the title of a booklet just published by the Carlyle Rubber Co., New York. Power Transformers. The manufacturing procedure of Allis-Chalmers small power transformers is described in a new 28-page bulletin, 61B6094A, covering the core and coil unit, no-load tap changer, tank construction, cooling methods, oil preserving systems, bushings, terminal compartments, indicators and testing of transformers. Safety Equipment. General Scientific Equipment Co., Philadelphia, has released a 46-page, fully illustrated catalog on personal protective equipment and industrial safety devices. This new catalog covers respiratory devices, eye protection, hats, gloves, carboy pumps, drum pumps, and miscellaneous safety equipment for use in mines, industries, etc. Osmosalts. The Osmose Wood Preserving Co., Buffalo, N. Y., has issued a bulletin on Osmosalts, the wood preservative which, say the manufacturers, makes timber last three to five times longer, slashes maintenace costs, stops rot, and resists wood-destroying insects. Jigs. The Dorr Co. has acquired the Pan American jigs and they are now known as the Dorrco-Pan American jigs. Originally developed as a gold-saving device for dredges, the simplicity, ease of operation. efficiency, and negligible maintenance of these jigs have resulted in wide adoption on all types of placer operations, in the closed grinding circuits of gold mills, and on many applications where a coarse bed concentrate is separated from the ore gangue.

ONE of the earliest investigations of ground water in Florida was made in 1513 when Ponce de Leon arrived at St. Augustine in search of the Fountain of Youth. The history of the development of the water resources of the State shows that the large artesian reservoir that underlies Florida was discovered in the latter part of the last century. Part of that history is given by L. C. Johnson1 who states that the first successful artesian well in Florida was drilled at St. Augustine between 1880 and 1882. After the City of Jacksonville failed to obtain a flow of artesian water at a depth of nearly 400 ft and abandoned the drilling, R. N. Ellis, City Engineer, and L. C. Johnson, using Johnson's knowledge of the geologic structure of the artesian reservoir, estimated correctly that artesian water could be obtained at a depth of about 500 ft. Thus began the development of the large artesian system in the northeastern part of the State. In 1908, the Florida Geological Survey issued its first report on the ground water of central Florida.

THE general subject of accurate pyrometry, its great development in recent years, and the importance of its application in arts and manufactures is so ably treated in other papers that this paper will bee confined to a resume of some research work on certain temperature effects in carbon and other steels, some of which appear to, be new. The results of these researches are embodied in several papers presented to' various scientific societies during the last few years, most of them under the general title of Spontaneous Generation of Heat in Recently Hardened Steel.1 Several years ago, when studying the behavior, tinder certain conditions, of specimens of hardened tool steel, I observed that they all spontaneously generated a small quantity of heat, the rate of generation diminishing from day to day for several weeks before generation became imperceptible in the sensitive calorimeter used. In each case the steel had been hardened only a few days prior to its use. It seemed highly probable that the generation of heat was associated with some sort of "seasoning" or incipient annealing process, perhaps accompanied by slight changes of volume, and that it would be most rapid immediately after hardening. I subsequently investigated this curious phenomenon more fully. Twelve ½ in. round bars of tool steel, 5 in. long and with machined surfaces, were hardened by heating to high cherry red in a reducing atmosphere of a gas furnace and quenched in cold water. The bars then had a thin strongly adhering coating of black oxide. They were next stirred in a large quantity of water at room temperature, to acquire that temperature, wiped dry, and oiled with heavy, neutral mineral oil to prevent generation of heat by further surface oxidation, wiped free of excess of oil and placed in the copper cylinder of a heat-insulated box.

INTRODUCTION CLEAR recognition by Lindgren1 of the important control exerted by physical conditions on the formation of ores laid the foundation for that long-sought attainment, a classification? of mineral deposits based consistently on origin. In probably no other portion of the realm of mineral deposition has the importance of physical influences been so manifest or the validity of Lindgren's genetic classification been so well proved as in that extremely important family of ore deposits which are now universally classed as hydrothermal and generally regarded as of magmatic derivation. While many varieties of deposits, some of them possessing great scientific interest and economic importance, fall outside the limits of this hydrothermal group, inclusion within it of most of the veins and a vast number of the replacement deposits of the world gives to this grand genetic class at once a dominating importance and a powerful scientific appeal. Nowhere are these vein and replacement deposits of hydro- thermal lineage more generously distributed, more extensively exploited or more thoroughly known than in the Cordilleran province of the United States. One of the respects in which these hydrothermal deposits command the interest of both geologists and mine operators is in their relation to depth: the great vertical range through which many of them have already been developed, the disappointing failure of others at relatively shallow levels, and the noteworthy downward changes in character and tenor exhibited by still others. In this hydrothermal category (if the Rand be granted place here) are included the ores of all the very deep mines of the world, ranging from 5,000 to nearly 8,000 ft., as well as of many other mines undoubtedly destined in time to attain corresponding depths.

The generation of fibers composed of individual TiZn15 compound particles and their influence on crystallographic orientation in chill-cast, hot-rolled hypoentectic Zn-Ti alloys were explored. Metallo-graphic examination and X-ray diffraction data show that such fibers form a planar network after 50 pet reduction which eventually tends to suppress twinning at some critical reduction level (-90 pct) where the grain size approaches the interfiber, spacing. This leads to the development of a duplex-type projerred orientation through slip rotation consisting of an al-most ideal (0001)(2iiOj texture and a (0001) (1010) rotated component. Correlations between basal-plane rotation and secondary- creep rc11e sugg-est, however that prejerred orientation does not contribute in a major way to the creep resistance of these alloys. EFFORTS to improve the creep resistance of zinc through alloying without incurring a loss in fabricating properties have achieved only minor success with the exception of the very effective addition of titanium. Anderson, Boyle, and Ramsey,l for example, demonstrated that increasing the amount of thiselement from 0.05 to 0.23 wt pct produced a progressive, 45-fold increase in the inverse creep rate of hot-rolled

AN analysis of this subject demands a study of the theory and practice of the present system, conclusions as to its merits, and recommendations for remedying its defects if any be found. Theory of the Present Law The theory of the present law with reference to lode locations contemplates the existence upon the surface of mineral-bearing veins which have clearly marked boundaries, and which can be so readily traced that a locator may immediately mark the boundaries of his 600 by 1,500 ft. claim in such a way that the vein will pass through both of its end-lines. It also supposes that, having discovered such a mineral-bearing vein, the locator will at once post a notice upon such discovery, mark the boundaries of his location in such a manner that they can be readily traced, and from that time forward have absolute title to the ground embraced within such boundaries, as against every person except the United States. For initiating title to placer ground, the law presupposes the discovery of a valuable mineral deposit; but not necessarily in place, as in the case of lode claims; and the location must be made to conform "as nearly as may be" to the legal subdivisions of the United States public land survey. When the placer law was extended to include the acquisition of title to oil lands, no exception was made as to the necessity for the discovery of valuable mineral in advance of location!

Single crystals of tungsten were made and deformed in tension at 3000°C. The slip traces so formed on these crystals were analysed to determine the apparent slip system. Results indicate that deformation occurs in the<III> direction on planes of maximum shear stress. This determination agrees with the early work of Taylor and Elam on other body-centered cubic crystals at lout temperatures. SLIP in face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed metals has consistently manifested itself in straight traces which indicate that glide takes place on planes of highest atomic density and in directions of closest packing. The slip traces observed on body-centered cubic metals are, on the other hand, frequently branched and wavy, and indicate that while glide takes place in the direction of closest packing, it does not necessarily choose the plane of highest density. The early work of Taylor and Elam1 4 indicated that glide took place in the close-packed direction on planes close to those defined by the maximum shear stress. Subsequent investigations have tried to rationalize these observations in terms of an elementary process on the close-packed planes (110). For example, Elam5 and Grenin~er&apos; have suggested alternate glide on nonparallel (110) planes with the observed result that the summation of these glides results in a trace which defines some plane other than{110). Madden and chen7 have recently reviewed the phenomenological and theoretical aspects of noncrystallographic slip. More recently Koehler&apos; has presented a model of dislocation propagation which permits another rationalization. He indicated that dislocation loops are transferred from one glide plane to another by double cross-slip of screw segments. Correlation of interfacial tension of the methane-n-pentane and methane-n-decane systems was made by Hough and Stegemeier by the use of the Weinaug and Katz equation. The methane-n-heptane and ethylene-n-heptane systems were investigated by the authors. Additional systems taken from the literature were the me thane-propane system by Weinaug. and Katz, the methane-n-butane system by Pennington and Hough, and the n- butane -carbon dioxide system by Brauer and Hough. These systems were analyzed by the Weinaug-Katz equation and the Sugden equation on the IBM 1620 11 computer using a regression analysis program. Parachor and exponent values for each component and system were determined. The experimental work was close to the critical point of the light component in the n-butane-carbon dioxide and ethylene-n-heptane systems, between the critical points of the light and heavy components in the methane-n-pentane, methane-n-heptane and methane-n-decane systems, and close to the critical point of the heavy component in the methane-pmpane and methane-n-butane systems. An empirical formula was developed to find a value of the constant B in the Sugden equation for binary hydrocarbon systems from the parachor values of the two components. Interfacial tension for binary hydrocarbon systems was found to be a direct function of liquid-vapor phase density difference in the same manner as a single-component system. In a theoretical study of hydraulic jetting, the velocity of the abrasive material relative to the velocity of the fluid in the jet stream is analyzed as the jet stream moves through the convergent and straight sections of the nozzle and the region between the nozzle exit and target. The results revealed that the abrasive material exits from the jet nozzle at a lower velocity than the fluid. The exit pmticle velocity can be increased by increasing either the density of the fluid or the length of the nozzle, and/ or decreasing either the particle density or particle diameter. In the divergent jet stream, there exists a point after which the particle velocity exceeds that of the fluid. The relative velocities were considered in the derivation of an equation to predict cutting rate of a circumferential notch and maximum notch depth. Data of a general nature and data which substantiate the theoretical results were obtained experimentally. INTRODUCTION The use of a fluid containing an abrasive material has been an established technique for cleaning and cutting for many years. In the petroleum industry, the early effort to use this technique1 to perforate and/or to overcome wellbore damage met with only limited acceptance because of the short life of the jet nozzle. With the introduction of improved perforating techniques, and later, hydraulic fracturing, the use of hydraulic jetting as a well completion technique became even less appreciated. It was only in recent years that interest in hydraulic jetting was revived. Once this interest was revived, the results of surface tests stimulated the interest of the industry even more than the state of the technology probably warranted because many of the tests were not appropriate for down-hole conditions. However, because of the stimulated interest, the development of the jet nozzle progressed very rapidly to the point where the nozzle life was no longer a prob- lem. With this accomplished, the use of hydraulic jetting in well completion became an accepted practice in a short time. The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical analysis of the hydraulic jet stream as it passes through the nozzle and travels to its target. With a better understanding of the jet stream and the effects of various parameters, the performance of the process can be predicted more accurately. Equations are presented for cutting rate as applied to circumferential wellbore notching that relate the jet stream make-up, notch configuration and formation material. Also, experimental data are presented on some factors pertinent to hydraulic notching that are not theoretically analyzed. RELATED STUDIES Most of the studiesl-5 reported in the recent literature have pertained to the more practical aspects of hydraulic jetting; i.e., the effects of certain parameters as interpreted from experimental results, and the application of hydraulic jetting in well completion. In reviewing the effects of various parameters, it is interesting to note the reported depths of penetration obtained under various imposed conditions. In general, the depths vary from a few inches to several feet; however, a depth of penetration of less than 6 in., as reported by Thompson,4 seems more realistic for the usual field practice of hydraulic jetting with sand in water for a period of 20 to 30 minutes. In addition to the practical aspects, the study of Brown and Loper5 included a theoretical approach to hydraulic jetting. Their study resulted in the development of a theoretical expression for the maximum depth of penetration if jetting were continued for an infinite time. An analysis of the equations presented reveals that the initial cutting rate is infinite. The equation expressing centerline velocity is that of Forstall and Gaylord,6 which is applicable for a jet stream exiting in a large stationary medium. Since practically all of the fluid pumped into a perforation (or cut) must flow back through the perforation prior to re-entering the wellbore, a description of the medium as finite and non-stationary seems more reasonable. The raceway in front of the tuyere of the blast furnace has been studied quantitatively and a correlation obtained for the penetrastudiedtion of the blast. Some evidence is presented for the height and width of the raceway which suggests that all the raceways of a ffurnace overlap. The size of the coke in this zone has been measfurnaceoverlap.ured photographically during normal operation and results are given for the various areas. IN an earlier paper,&apos; it was shown that a raceway exists opposite each tuyere of a blast furnace. This raceway is formed by the jet effect of the air emerging from the tuyere and consists essentially of a turbulence in which coke particles are recir-culated at high speed. Its presence was deduced originally from observations on movies taken with a high-speed camera through the tuyeres of various furnaces and was confirmed by experiments made on a model. In the model described,&apos; this raceway was shown as operating in a vertical plane only, although there was a suggestion in the motion-picture film exhibited at that time that the raceway was three dimensional, unless artificially restricted. There was also some doubt then about the factors influencing its size. This paper describes the next steps in the investigation. Since the size of the raceway is obviously of importance in the operation of the furnace, it seemed worth while to study the subject more carefully. It is probably in this region that about half the coke in the furnace is consumed, so that the movement of the stock column may well be controlled by raceway behavior. Furthermore, there is some evidence to suggest that the coke is packed densely in the center of the furnace to form the "dead man" and more loosely above the raceway. It is therefore probable that the bulk of the gases passing up the stack flow from the top surface of this raceway. Clearly then, a knowledge of this critical zone is of interest to the blast furnace operator, and the first half of this report is devoted to a quantitative discussion of the subject. A further topic of interest among operators is the degree of breakdown of coke in the furnace, with which is inseparably linked the importance of a strong coke. Indeed, the whole question of the optimum size and type of coke may be as dependent on the condition of the coke in the bottom of the blast furnace as at the top. Attempts have been made from time to time to obtain samples of coke from the tuyeres and other furnace openings but they all suffer from the fact that the coke is filled to a varying degree with metal and slag and is probably broken up by the very act of taking the sample. It has proved difficult to make any reliable studies of coke size by these methods. However, it did seem possible to use the highspeed movies mentioned earlier1 to estimate the size of the coke. These movies provide an accurate record of individual coke particles so that, in theory at least, it should be possible to measure the size of the particles one by one and to obtain, for the first time, information on the coke being blown around the raceway under actual operating conditions while the furnace is performing normally. Such a study has been made and is discussed in the second half of this paper. The results obtained enabled the blast furnace data to be correlated with the model results given in the first half. Raceway Size In order to make a quantitative study of the size of the raceway it was necessary to devise some apparatus of laboratory scale, which could be handled quickly and easily. This focused attention on models, which in turn means that the laws of similarity governing this particular process must be ascertained. Method of Procedure: Since the work was to be carried out on a smaller scale than the blast furnace, the linear dimensions of the model became unimportant provided that the scale was known; it is only important to insure that the container does not affect the raceway being observed. This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplishing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowledge the very great willingness of these outstanding scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is possible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydrocarbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to complete an analysis. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis. The Mass Spectrometer The mass spectrometer should not be confused in any way with the optical 01 grating type of spectrograph now in general use. The operation of the mass spectrometer is entirely different in principle and bears practically no resemblance to the optical or grating instruments. The original conception and development of the mass spectrometer dates from and is generally credited to Aston, of Cambridge, England. An early accomplishment of his research, about 20 years ago, was the discovery that the inert gas neon was actually a mixture of two kinds of atoms, one of the atomic weight 20 and the other of atomic weight 22. These two components occurred mixed in such proportion as to yield the usual atomic weight of 20.2.
