IN recent years, the importance of slag control in basic open-hearth operations has been universally recognized. To effect such control during the working period of the heat, methods have been developed to measure or estimate slag oxidation and slag basicity. While satisfactory rapid chemical methods have been developed to determine slag oxidation, no completely adequate method of evaluating basicity has yet been provided. The most generally accepted control methods of measuring slag basicity are based on visual estimates. While considerable benefit may be derived from such estimates, the need for some measurable indication of slag basicity has become increasingly apparent. In a recent paper, Philbrook and Jolly[$] suggested a promising technique for making the basicity determination. Their method consists of measuring the pH of a mixture of powdered open-hearth slag and distilled water. It was found that a relation could be established between the slag basicity and the alkalinity of the water mixture as measured by the hydrogen-ion concentration. The general procedure followed in making the measurements and the considerations involved in constructing the original curves are given in the paper of Philbrook and jolly and need not be repeated. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss some of the factors considered in applying the pH measurements to actual slag control and to present some of the results of its application. FACTORS INVOLVED IN MEASURING pH OF WATER-SLAG MIXTURES To facilitate the application of the pH control system, it was desirable that no alteration be made in the routine methods of sampling and crushing the furnace slag. Some of the factors considered before establishing a curve to relate slag basicity with the pH reading are reviewed individually in the following paragraphs. EFFECT OF COOLING RATE Under actual operating conditions there can be considerable variation in the tem¬perature of the piece of slag crushed for the pH determination. To determine whether variations in crushing temperature or in cooling rate would affect the pH reading, a series of four samples was prepared from each of two separate slags. These samples represented conditions far more extreme than would actually be encountered. To obtain these samples, a thick pancake of slag was poured. One piece of this pancake was crushed immediately after it had solidified. Another piece was water-quenched and then crushed. A series of gas-lift tests was made which verified conclusions reached from previous studies and which showed that gas-lift performance could be calculated if reasonably accurate data on the producing characteristics of the well are available.' The test installation is described. Its essential features consisted of a rate-of-flow controller to regulate the input gas and an auxiliary string of small diameter tubing to conduct the input gas to the point of injection in the eductor tubing. In general, it was shown that for continuous gas-lift operation, injection should be as deep as possible consistent with available gas pressure and rate of production desired. Calculated curves are presented which completely characterize the gas-lift performance of the well tested. INTRODUCTION A correlation based on field data from a large number of flowing and gas-lift wells, covering a wide range of oper- ating conditions, was developed which permitted the logical design and prediction of the performance of continuous gaslift installations.' The procedure made it possible to calculate the depth, pressure, rate at which to inject gas, horsepower requirements, and the effect of production rate and tubing size on these quantities. As a result of these calculations certain significant facts were brought to light or re-emphasized. The presence of efficient ranges of operation and an optimum injection depth for a given rate of production were shown to exist as well as the fact that the lower the tubing pressure the less the horsepower requirements to lift the reservoir fluids. The fact that the gas lift performance can be predicted by calculation does not mean that any given installation will perform over the entire range predicted. Many of the conventional continuous gas-lift installations will not permit operation over the entire range predicted by calculation (particularly in the efficient range of operation) because of the performance characteristics of the installation. Consequently, field tests were initiated for the purpose of investigating and arriving at a simple continuous gas-lift installation which would operate under all conditions predicted by calculation. The first series of tests involved the use of mechanically operated valves. These valves were slip-joint type valves which are opened and closed by lowering or raising the tubing at the surface by means of a hydraulic jack. These valves were chosen because it was hoped that they could be opened or closed at will and did not depend on the gas pressure in the annulus or the pressure of the fluid in the tubing for their operation. Unfortunately, the valves did not operate satisfactorily and it was imossible to open or close each valve at will. Some limited data were obtained, however, which verified the predicted benefits resulting from the use of lower tubing pressures. In the next series of tests the valves were removed and the gas was injected from the annulus through a 14/64-in. orifice equipped with a reverse check valve. A packer was set below the valve to seal off the space between the 2-in. tubing and 5-in. casing. The injection point was located at 3,810 ft. This arrangement provided satisfactory mechanical operation. However, it was impossible to obtain low rates of liquid production at low tubing pressures as predicted by calculation. THE purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical pros-pecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field.

Oil development continued active in Wyoming during 1937, with much of the interest centered on prospecting for new pools, following a rather intensive seismograph play in 1936. The new fields of Lance Creek, Medicine Bow and Quealy were the centers of intense development in proved areas, but routine drilling occurred in most old fields. A new and deeper producing horizon (the Leo sand) was opened up in the Lance Creek field, which materially extends the producing area and will probably account for continued active development during 1938. The discovery in 1936 of oil in the Eocene Wasatch formation at Powder Wash, northwestern Colorado, tended for a time to stimulate prospecting in the deep Tertiary basins, but this interest as rapidly declined after drilling several failures on similar structures and the discovery that the productive area at Powder Wash itself was very small. A most interesting test of an Eocene structure was drilled by The Superior Oil Company of California on the South Baggs structure, in Carbon County, Wyoming. South Baggs is one of the best developed structures in the Red Desert Washakie Basin, which also includes the Hiawatha gas field and the Powder Wash gas and oil field. The Superior Oil Co. started the well according to contract but apparently had lost interest in the prospects, for it abandoned the well at 2138 ft. without testing the oil-bearing and gas-bearing horizons of the Wasatch. The Sinclair Wyoming Oil Co. drilled a deep test in the Muskrat gas field to the Madison. This well discovered oil in the Embar formation, which was considered noncommercial because of depth. After the Embar was abandoned the hole was plugged back and the various sands tested by shooting through the casing with the Lane-Wells gun. The Lakota sand was found to contain high-pressure gas and the well was completed as a 24-million-foot gasser at 2175 lb. rock pressure. This is a new sand in an old field. The Italo Petroleum Co. drilled a flank well on the Hamilton dome structure and found oil in the lower Embar formation. FROM the viewpoint of practical economic engineering the main value in studies of demand and supply lies in the information they give concerning the next movement of price. The title of this discussion is too comprehensive for detailed analysis and it will, therefore, be narrowed to the question of price measurement. The oil operator is interested primarily in net profits. Prices, costs and production determine them. Production is here used in its broadest sense. It includes refining and marketing. It is an operating problem. Prices and costs are economic considerations. Though costs are an important element of prices and profits, the subject is too large to be treated in a brief paper of this sort. In the long run, costs govern prices, but for the purpose of gaging prices in the immediate future the relationship of current demand and supply are more significant. Operating, expansion, retrenchment, sales and storage policies of oil companies are largely influenced by the feeling of executives concerning this relationship. The stockholders of companies whose executives are wrong may suffer. Investors who err in their judgment may likewise lose. On the other hand, oil companies and investors who appraise these factors correctly and move accordingly will profit. It is an important subject worthy of careful consideration.

INTRODUCTION The principal object of this paper is to present data on the development of the revolving convex round table as a concentrator for the through 0.07-mm. slimes from the ores of the Butte district, although same brief notes on the earliest recorded use of this type of concentrating table in the ore-dressing plants of the Lake Superior region and of the Butte district are also presented. The revolving convex round table belongs to the class of concentrating tables known as film-sizing tables, these tables using the relative transporting power of a film, or thin sheet of water, as it flows over a quiet inclined surface, to separate the minerals of a sorted product.

THIS paper reviews the industrial trends and changes in educational concepts that have led to the development of the modern petroleum engineering curriculum. A trend toward emphasis on engineering fundamentals is noted. While most universities are committed to the traditional four-year engineering program, it is agreed that more than four years is necessary for academic preparation of the petroleum engineer in all phases of his profession. The author proposes a coordinated program of undergraduate and graduate training that will permit of adherence to the general pattern of the present four-year engineering course, with provision for extension of the program into specialized graduate courses of professional character. In the latter, emphasis may vary with the interests and objectives of the individual student. A specific undergraduate curriculum is proposed in which upward of 80 per cent of the available time is devoted to engineering fundamentals. A broad survey of the professional field is afforded in courses grouped in the third and fourth undergraduate years, but detailed treatment of the professional aspects of petroleum engineering is reserved for the graduate program. INTRODUCTION Of necessity, engineering curricula must ever be changing to reflect the new techniques, the changing concepts that are presented as the engineering industries develop and unfold. Particularly is this true of the younger engineering curricula representing comparatively new and rapidly changing industries such as the petroleum industry. Institutions that planned their petroleum engineering curricula a decade or two ago now find that the petroleum industry has become vastly more technical in its requirements. Entirely new methods and techniques have come into vogue and must be given place in the curriculum, and some of these are of a character that demands changing emphasis in the fundamental preparatory subjects. College and university faculties cannot complacently assume that curricula in this field that were considered appropriate 10 or 20 years ago still reflect the needs of the industry that they are designed to serve. If they do, their graduates will be poorly equipped to meet the requirements imposed upon them by a rapidly changing industry. Perhaps it is not too much to expect academic authorities to anticipate the trends of industry and equip their graduates with what they will need to attain leadership 10 or 20 years after graduation. Whether or not this desirable objective is possible, there is no excuse for allowing curricula to fall behind the current needs of industry. DURATION OF CURRICULUM The majority of our engineering schools and colleges still adhere to the four-year curricula and there appears to be a definite - sentiment among many engineers engaged in industry that work should be so planned that the engineering student may secure the essential academic preparation for his profession in a terminal four-year program. Having had charge during the past year of the operations of the New River Coke Company, the second largest, if not the largest, coke-producer in this district, my attention was called particularly to the yield of coke from the coal as coked in a bank of beehive ovens, as the record showed that this yield, while believed to be well up with the practice of the district, was much lower than the analysis of the coal indicated it should be. The coal is well known to many members of the Institute, and the scope of this paper does not include a discussion of its occurrence and development. It suffices to say that the New River district comprises the mines working on the coals of No. XII. or the Conglomerate Series of the Rogers brothers, which are located on New river and its tributaries, and which find an outlet for their product east and west over the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The New river through this section carries the drainage from an extensive peneplain in which it has formed a very striking and stupendous canon, probably the most striking east of the Mississippi river. The only practical access to this territory is by means of this canon and the Chesapeake and Ohio road, and the opportunities for development by other lines may be considered as nil. If it were not for the fact that this road, farther west, reaches and develops entirely different coals, which are found in other measures, the New River district might properly be spoken of (as is now done at times) as the " C and 0. field." THE liability for damages to the surface caused by subsidence is an ever present threat in all underground mining. In ordinary lode mining, this threat rarely materializes into an action, due to the method of mining metaliferous ores, the dip of the veins, and the nature of the ground itself. In the mining of coal, however, this threat is very real. The coal frequently lies close to the surface, in beds underlying large areas of land the surface of which is suitable for agricultural or urban development. Furthermore, the coal is generally mined by the "room and pillar" method and when the pillars of coal are removed, the subjacent support is destroyed. This question of the duty of surface support has now become a very live one in Colorado. What was waste prairie land a few years ago, has become valuable agricultural land dotted here and there with growing towns. Frequent references. will be made here to Colorado conditions and adjudicated cases, but those conditions and cases and the conclusions to be drawn therefrom are equally applicable to all coal-mining states. Briefly stated, the question: is "Does the owner of the substrata or underlying mineral owe any duty of surface support to the owner of the superjacent strata or surface?" There is no absolute duty of support owed by the mineral owner and this assertion is made with full knowledge of numerous expressions to the contrary by courts of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and other coal-mining states. Whether or not any duty exists depends upon the circumstances surrounding each case, and since in the nature of things those circumstances are rarely identical, there can be no absolute rule.

The sign of the surface potential for complex non-reactive ionic solids cannot be predicted solely from consideration of the hydration energy of gaseous ions which constitute the ionic lattice. Accurate analysis of these systems must involve the hydration energy of surface ions, which requires knowledge of the crystal structure, the identification of cleavage planes, and the calculation of binding energies of surface ions. Surface binding energies for ionic solids can be determined if the Surface Madelung Constant is known. A computational technique was developed for the calculation of Madelung Constants for infinite lattices which gives excellent agreement with the values calculated by other more complicated methods reported in the literature. Extension of this technique permits the calculation of Surface Madelung Constants and binding energies of surface ions, [Aus], for semi-infinite solids. The hydration free energy of gaseous ions, [AFh], together with the calculated binding energy of surface ions, [Aus], allows calculation of the hydration energy of surface ions,[AGh], as for the case of the ionic solid, MX: [ ]

FoR a number of years the senior author has been interested in the various geologic and engineering problems involved in the development of the petroliferous districts of northeastern Mexico, having in a previous paper* endeavored to present a summarized statement of the information relating to the geology and soil resources of this region. Of the many interesting geologic phenomena, perhaps those which have been the object of most speculation relate to the igneous intrusions which, in places, have a controlling influence on the accumulation of oil in commercial quantibies, a relationship which has been tentatively explained by various observers with as many interestingly different views. The authors of the present paper aim to record, in the course of a general discussion of the various viewpoints, some additional data, and present further tentative conclusions with a view to rounding out an up-to-date summary of the subject. The greater part of the area in question lies in the State of Vera Cruz, only a northwest fraction being in the State of San Luis Potosi. Vera Cruz is bounded on the north by the State of Tamaulipas, the northernmost of the Mexican States along the Gulf. The topography of the States of Tamaulipas and Vera Cruz and of Texas and Louisiana to the north, is controlled by the Gulf coastal plain which in northern Vera Cruz has an average width of about, 60 miles, the transitional topography between that of the rugged Banks of the Sierra and the lowlands of the coast being made up of a series of terraces and irregular hills and valleys. Until recent years, maintenance of surface coal handling facilities was a relatively simple task. Equipment consisted principally of conveyors, screens and crushers of comparatively simple construction. Electrical equipment consisted of motors and starters, with little, if any, interlocking. In most cases failure of any component affected only the grades of coal loaded so that even a prolonged breakdown did not affect mine operation materially. However, with the introduction of modern cleaning plants, the picture has changed. The equipment is much more complex and therefore more difficult to maintain. In many cases failure of any component of the plant prevents loading of coal. Even if provision is made to bypass, the quality of coal loaded is lowered, affecting markets. In the case of plants designed to permit full seam mining, marketable coal cannot be loaded without operation of the cleaning plant. Under these conditions it is apparent that considerable thought and effort toward better maintenance are justified. In order to assure continuous, efficient and economical operation, maintenance should receive consideration, not only after the plant is in operation, but while it is being designed. It is hardly necessary to say that the designer should strive for sturdi-ness and wearing qualities. It is sometimes not realized, however, that even the best parts will sooner or later require replacement or repair. The designer should, there- fore, give consideration to accessibility. Anyone who has had to do with cleaning plant maintenance is familiar with installations where several hours are required to get at a part that can be repaired or replaced in a few minutes, once it is accessible. As in most cases, experience is the best guide. The men who operate and maintain this equipment know the problems encountered. Whenever available, the opinions of these men should be sought and heeded. As an example, we might consider the refuse elevator on a Chance Cone. Our company is now operating three of these cones, the first of which was installed in 1941, and the latest in 1946. Exact records are not available, but well over 50 pct of delays charged to the Chance Cones have been caused by the refuse elevator. This elevator receives refuse from the cone and carries it to a point above the water level of the cone, discharging onto a dewatering and desanding screen. Since the elevator operates under water and necessarily has close clearances in the lower boot, it tends to jam on large pieces of refuse or tramp iron. The chain, buckets and boot are also subjected to the action of water, sand and refuse, which accelerate normal wear. In case of jamming or chain-breakage it is necessary to drain the elevator and the cone so that even a minor fault in the elevator causes a considerable loss of time for the cone. In our new plant, which will contain two Chance Cones, the refuse elevator has been eliminated. Lignite Development in North Dakota is a "shotgun wedding" according to former state senator Robert L. Stroup-the unwilling groom (North Dakota) is being led to the altar by the nation's demand for increased coal production. The state's attorney general, Allen I. Olson, reacts to the situation this way: "We have no specific coal policy. We plan to keep the whole matter down to a dull roar and drag our feet until we see how we fit into the national energy picture." But despite a state administration labeled as "cautiously negative" toward resource development, North Dakota has experienced a twofold increase in annual lignite production within the last two years. And within the next four years, three more mine additions will double the state's output again.

On June 20, 1974, delegations representing the governments of 150 nations convened in Caracas, Venezuela. The occasion: the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. (As this article goes to press, the conference is still in session-Ed). Of all the many issues to come before the conference, none is of greater long-term consequence than the issue of jurisdiction over the seabed-the "land" at the bottom of the world's oceans. On the agenda, with widespread support from a majority of UN members, is a proposal to declare seabed resources "the common heritage of mankind," under the sole jurisdiction of the United Nations. Any would-be miner of seabed minerals would have to apply to a UN seabed authority for a permit, and would be forced to pay the bulk of his profits to a UN fund to aid the underdeveloped countries.

With the Report of Mining Statistics, for the year 1872, there was published a geological map of the United States and Territories. This is, I believe, the only map which represents the geology of Arizona, and is, as far as my observations go, correct. It is, however, on so small a scale as to be of little practical value to the miner. I know of no other maps, even of localities, of this Territory. The topographical maps are also on so small a scale as not even to serve as guides from place to place; the largest, that of Eckhoff and Ricker, being only 30 by 30 inches to represent a territory of 135,000 square miles. For these reasons, it makes it exceedingly difficult to describe the various mining centres in an intelligent manner, and equally so to examine such a hilly country as it is intended to describe in this paper. When I first came into this Territory I soon realized the troubles I had to encounter in trying to form an opinion, or even to get the needed information on the geological contour. I have, therefore, labored as best I could to get a topographical diagram of the section of country represented by the map which accompanies this paper.* The lines run by the Land Department up the valleys of the Aqua Frio, and those west of the Hassayampa, and connected east and west to the north of Prescott, enabled me to inclose correctly the space covered by the Bradshaw and Sierra Prieta mountain groups, but the territory covered by these mountains, and the most difficult part, I have had to fill up as best I could. I have met with such success as to meet the approbation of those most familiar with the country, and, with the map in hand, any one would he able to cross it in any direction. As there has not been a single line of survey made across it, this has been no small undertaking, and I have had to depend upon sights from prominent points with the pocket-compass, or, in the absence of that, to make observations, with watch in hand, and guess as near as possible the meridian direction. HAVING been asked to talk about recent devel-opments in mining equipment, I chose the sub-ject of small units of storage-battery locomo-tives which recently have been developed with the idea of motorizing transportation in the mines as far as possible, replacing the manual labor of hand-tramming. Metal mines are probably less advanced in this field than coal mines, where transportation of large ton-nages on any one level is quite common. Of course, metal mines, where large tonnages are handled on any one level, are as advanced as coal mines, and storage-battery locomotives for main haulages are used quite commonly in such metal mines, but the mines having levels at many intervals in the depth of the orebody, or a number of intermediate levels in which a consider-able amount of hand-tramming has to be done, and small metal mines in which the size of the orebody does not seem to warrant the initial capital expenditure for the driving of main haulage levels and installation of rock and ore chutes and raises for the delivery of the broken ore and rock to the cars have been at consider-able disadvantage in replacing manual labor by some mechanical means of transportation. Several years ago the field was canvassed among the manufacturers of electric-locomotive equipment and the conclusion was reached that the art had not been devel-oped to the advantage of metal miners who desire to replace small units of labor by locomotive equipment. The need for such small locomotives is all the more em-phasized by the development in the past few years of mechanical mucking-machines (loading equipment for filling the cars from muck piles on the level). Any me-chanical loader is a liability instead of an asset unless means are also provided for keeping the material away from the loading-machines. Therefore the transporta-tion system must be equal to the capacity of a loading-machine, otherwise the latter is idle such a large per-centage of its time as to prove an unprofitable invest-ment. So there is a need for portable, small haulage units to handle small mine cars in many metal mines, and, naturally, units are desired which can be so readily shifted from level to level as to facilitate their free use. Of course, in mines in which each level comes to the shaft it is not such a difficult problem, but many mines have a great many intermediate levels which must be approached through raises, timber slides or other small openings required to transfer ore and to get timber and other supplies to those levels.

Primary Crushers The types, sizes and number of crushers employed in a complete reduction system will vary with such factors as the volume of ore to be processed, the size of the mine-run lump material, the hardness of the ore bearing rock and the size and dimension required for the final product. Basically, for primary crushing there are only three distinct types of crushing equipment. These are the Jaw crushers, Gyratory crushers and Impact crushers, and they each have their own distinctive operating characteristics. Jaw crushers operate by squeezing the rock between the fixed and the movable sides of a tapered cavity. Variations of pitch and swing have been tried, but most Blake-type machines have a crushing angle of about 27° between swing and stationary jaws. The principle of which Gyratory crushers work is very simple. If a Cone is mounted on the upper end of a vertical shaft and the top of the shaft is held .stationary while the lower end is rotated eccentrically, the Cone will also swing eccentrically. If the Cone is enclosed in a suitable housing, it will swing toward and away from the housing walls-as it rotates. If the done and the housing walls are sufficiently strong and heavy, anything caught between them will be crushed.

INTRODUCTION Large amounts of mineral values are discarded today as fines and ultrafines, because of inadequate technology to process them economically. Most conventional mineral processing techniques fail in the sub-sieve range. Fines respond poorly to processes such as flotation either due to change in mineralogy and surface composition or even simply due to the direct effect of their smallness in size on collision and adhesion rates between them and air bubbles. Indeed if the poor flotation is due to the smallness in size, a solution must rest in aggregating the fines. Inorganic electrolytes as well as polymers have been successfully used as flocculants in the past for obtaining increased flotation of colloidal material from waste water effluents. In mineral beneficiation, this technique can be profitably used if the process of flocculation can be made to take place selectively. The power of the selective flocculation technique has already been proven, with the successful application of it in the case of beneficiation of low grade iron ore by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Ore Company and potash ore by Cominco. The process holds tremendous potential when it is followed by flotation, elutriation, etc. Today its application is, however, limited to the above two cases and it has become clear that a full understanding of the process will prove helpful for developing solutions to various problems that exist both at the basic and applied levels. In this paper, principles that are known to govern selective aggregation processes such as selective flocculation, carrier flotation and spherical agglomeration will be examined and areas of uncertainties will be identified.

AMONG the many causes of that perplexing feature of mine-exploitation, the unequal distribution of the ore, the influence of the country-rock upon the vein-contents has long been accepted as an important factor in certain districts, but the general application of the theory has not been proved. It is now possible to obtain trustworthy data with which to test the theory, and either to confirm or to overthrow this time-honored tradition. By the searching methods of modern petrography and chemistry, rock-determinations are now scientifically made, while the examination of thin sections of ores supplements field- and laboratory-study, and affords conclusive evidence of the paragenesis of the ore-minerals. In the great mass of data regarding mineral deposits accumulated during the past century, there are some facts which stand the test as to reliability; but the greater part are not available for use in this discussion. Within the last 20 years, however, many able workers have contributed careful and accurate accounts of various ore-deposits; and it is by the facts given in such papers, and by personal experience, that. I have become convinced that there is in some districts a true relation between the country-rock and the mineral contents of the veins. My own interest in the subject arose from the observation of a number of striking instances of the variation of vein-contents with the nature of the inclosing rock. Having already recorded certain observations of this kind, I venture to present in this paper further notes, together with a few facts from the literature of the subject, which seem to prove the correctness of my view. Water is a most remarkable substance. It is essential for life of all kinds. Not only can no one live without water, but man has always needed water for farming, raising animals, manufacturing, transportation, and recreation. When our country was young and inhabited by few people, the streams, rivers, and lakes were able to provide all the clean water needed by man and take away all the wastes created by man. However, with our growing population and our ever-increasing demand for goods and services, the public, industry, and government at all levels have become aware of the need to more efficiently manage the water resources of this nation. Coal has helped this nation to become the greatest industrial nation in the world. Coal has generated our electricity, run our railroads, and helped arm our nation during wartime. The result has been the highest standard of living in the world, a time of widespread prosperity, and a national defense potential that has delivered the hardware during four wars in this century. The use of water in coal mining is somewhat different than in most industries. With the exception of the small amount of water used in cleaning plants and for fire protection, most of the water encountered in coal mining operations is unwanted since it serves no useful purpose. In other words, it must be removed, otherwise it will interfere with mining operations by flooding. In the past, removing water from working areas of most mines was usually a fairly simple matter. Pumps with piping were installed at sumps or low spots in the mine and the water was pumped to the surface. Ditches were often used to drain the water by gravity to the outside or to main sumps for pump discharge. In either case, the water was allowed to flow into the nearest stream or river.
